Welcome

A warm welcome to the 11th 3 Harbours Arts Festival, East Lothian’s much loved and most diverse arts festival. I remember heading back early from my remote Scottish Sutherland’s holiday especially to go to the 3 Harbours Festival. I had heard so much about it. Little did I realise then that I would be a part of it, or even become it’s Chairman! Such has been its effect on me! This is a festival as diverse as the ever present sea, with craft, fine art, exhibitions in people’s homes, sculpture, and events. There will be music; traditional, classical and contemporary, as well as seafood festivals and street food vendors of all kinds, just to scratch the surface. It’s all here! When you need a break from all that, you can wiggle your toes in the sand of our beautiful beaches. This year we coincide with the unique Cockenzie & Port Seton Children’s Gala, part of which traditionally takes place out at sea. The Seton Queen, her escort and court sail out from Cockenzie harbour in fishing boats pursued by pirates, then they all return to Port Seton harbour. The Prestonpans Gala Day takes place in the middle of June confirming that this is a special time of year for our communities. It’s time to discover, or rediscover why it is so loved by so many. We welcome you to The 3 Harbours Arts Festival 2016!

thank you “A huge thank you to everyone who has supported and encouraged the new committee in the run up to their first festival. We hope that this will be the starting block for future festivals that will gradually draw in more entertainment from an ever increasing and more diverse range of talent. We would like to say a very special thank you to all our volunteers, without whom this festival simply would not exist. A huge thank you to all the participating artists, muscians and performers as well as all the local venues and houses that kindly open their doors for the festival. Our thanks to the 1st Cockenzie Scouts for the time and effort put into designing a large selection of wonderful drawings for this year’s brochure. Congratulations to Martha Anderson whose beautiful depiction of sea creatures adorns the front cover. Look out for other children’s contributions throughout the brochure. We would like to thank Rosy Naylor our brochure and leaflet designer, the Area Partnership for their support and funding and the tremendous support of EAE Leaflet Marketing Specialists who continue to sponsor our leaflet, brochure and poster distribution campaigns. Thank you.” cover image: Martha Anderson, age 7

Linda Sheridan is a painter and printmaker living in Roslin. Her work depicts the interactions between the elements, man and nature. She works in oil, watercolour, water-based print, and electronic techniques. This exhibition features harbours and windows.

My paintings are ďŹ gurative, but they have no subject or protagonist: their tension is only constructed by the endless landscape, ambiguous sense of scale, unknown inanimated objects and the possibility of a past or future action that never culminates.

I have been painting for pleasure for about 10 years, working mostly in acrylic. I like to use recycled materials where possible, this year I have chosen to paint acrylic on plywood with the ďŹ nished works mounted on trays.

Every mile traveled imprints onto the research and shapes the work. It’s movement that never comes to a full stop, for any particular location still hails to the places before and the ones to come.

Lynsey Wilson is a photographer and maker based in Port Seton. She graduated from Edinburgh College of Art in 1997. She is represented in this exhibition by a series of photographs of the local area and a selection of reversible wrap dresses for girls aged 0-6 years.

My paintings are abstract, influenced by harbours, water and landscape and typically emphasise a shape or particular line I have sketched, photographed or remembered. I attempt to distort perceptions of landscape often leading to a focus on composition.

I paint Scottish Dancers, with a modern twist, using mixed media to capture the movement and the unique look of the tartan while aiming to invoke a sense of pride and nostalgia.

I am an artist based in Leith. I have exhibited at The Mall Galleries in London as well as others in Scotland. I aim to capture the essence of what I paint and hope the viewer can feel this. I especially love painting coastal scenes and birds.

Self taught, my inuences are Impressionism and Expressionism. In particular I’m interested in how a painting can show how the artist felt about his subject. At present my work deals with local urban scenery, colour and tone through the seasons.

I love the Scottish outdoors, especially big skies and seas around the Scottish Hebrides and Highlands. They speak to me of freedom and being part of something bigger. I paint as an expression of creativity.

Emma Westwater is a graphic artist based in Dunbar. She is a design geek who hoards paper samples, wooden type and shiny plastic things. Emma creates multi-layered paper pieces often exploring her surroundings with a bright, graphic outlook.

The famous 105m embroidery charting Bonnie Prince Charlie’s road to victory in Prestonpans returns to it’s home town for the 3 Harbours Arts Festival 2016. There will be models of the 1745 battlefield and the chance to refight the battle in miniature. Hosted by the Battle of Prestonpans (1745) Heritage Trust.

I am an amateur artist working from home. My subjects are varied, often ďŹ gurative, but also land, sea and city scenes. I work in mixed media: different based paints, collage, ink, charcoal, pastel etc. I am particularly keen on print-making and frequently use the resulting prints in artists’ books.

Seas and skies that capture the everchanging moods that nature brings.

I feel exceptionally lucky to live on Scotland’s ‘Garden County’ coast, and to witness the most amazing sunsets and sunrises, capturing on canvas the different colours the sky shares. In addition to my seascapes, for this year’s Festival my paintings will include a patriotic theme.

Pat Turquand is attracted by strong colour. Her work features seascapes, landscapes, still life and portraits.

Iconic images that change with the light but are constant - or sometimes demolished to create a hole in the horizon. Some may be missed but others remain steadfast. S

Edd is a painter and digital artist. Over the last few years he has produced a whole range of fictional film posters and will be showing some brand new posters at this year’s festival featuring places all over Scotland.

Linda is an artist/printmaker living and working in West Lothian. She concentrates mainly on linocut and collagraph prints but also produces textile wall hangings using hand printed fabric. She loves colour and pattern and this shows in all her work.

My body of work involves the use of either watercolour, which often has ideas different to mine once it hits the paper or graphite pencil which, once built up in layers, allows for a wonderful depth of shadow and light.

I work predominantly in Acrylics, using large blocks of colour to create a mood & then adding some detail in order to draw the viewer in, hopefully evoking a sense of enquiry and reflection about the scene.

I love being outside and am in awe of the sea, mountains and nature in general. I enjoy using texture to help reflect these feelings.

I love painting in oils, the texture and richness of colour is always fun to work with. Most of my paintings have a slightly abstract feel - still life, flowers, seascapes and landscapes. I get my inspiration from colour, shape and light. Something will just catch my eye and I can’t rest until I paint it.

My artwork features driftwood, glass and pottery lovingly gathered from around the 3 Harbours coastline. I take my inspiration from the texture, colour and form of these aged materials, using them to create my driftwood sculptures and embellish my handcrafted furniture.

Each piece Anna Oberfeld makes acts as evidence. Oberfeld’s work investigates the idea of impermanence, symbolism, memory, and existence. Oberfeld creates, traces, and makes artifacts of her memories into a visual vernacular using Victorian flower symbolism as well as Oberfeld’s personal iconography.

Norman Lamont has been described as a ‘legend of the Edinburgh singer/songwriter scene’. His songs are quirky, toe-tapping and original. ‘Norman is one of these performers that offers up something a little quirkier than the normal singer/songwriter stuff… a few yarns... mixed with a deep cohenesque vocal and some super catchy hooks.’ (Hannah O’Reilly)

An acoustic evening of traditional and contemporary songs including the beautiful french melodies of Edith Piaf and songs from Coreen’s current album ‘Beyond The Sea’.

Tomfoolery is a four piece acoustic band performing the songs of Edinburgh based singer/songwriter Tom Fairnie. “A refreshingly modern tackling of a traditional sound cinematic and beautiful.”

DISCLAIMER The 3 Harbours Arts Festival has made every effort to ensure that the information published in this brochure is accurate at the time of going to print. However we cannot be held responsible for any variations errors or omissions. Under no circumstances can 3 Harbours Arts Festival accept liability for any loss, damage or injury sustained by any member of the public visiting any venue participating in the 3 Harbours.

Many of the children’s submissions for the front cover competition featured the loss of the Cockenzie Power Station chimneys. It reminded me of the importance of community self-identity. While some felt little, others cried when the chimneys spectacularly came down and yet, for a brief moment, a vision of a giant striding away and onwards, was also seen. For me, this symbolizes that this is a community that has seen much change over the centuries, but with the sea as a constant. Change comes but, like the spectral glimpse of the Giant of Cockenzie, the depth of enduring community spirit marches on.

A Time of Change and Renewal

As the motto of the area proclaims “Hazard Yet Forward’. It was this same spirit and courage which caused people to come forward and with great effort make the 3 Harbours Festival happen again. After all, what zest and liveliness can an arts festival have if it does not celebrate and renew the human spirit from it’s heart? Carl John Barber, Chair, 3 Harbour’s Arts Festival, 2016
