Hiring your DJ

iring a DJ is a big deal. Whoever you hire for your event is in charge of a major part of your wedding day, the entertainment. A DJ not only plays the music, they set the tone of the evening by their own personal style. They are responsible for a variety of tasks including engaging the crowd, interacting with the wedding party and handling announcements, introductions and the overall timing of the evening! Most people are not aware that there are business associations for DJ’s. You can look online for them and they are a great source for local resources. You put so much into planning the big day, hiring a DJ is not the place to cut costs. You will get what you pay for, so don’t shop for a DJ by price alone. Make sure to ask around for recommendations. Many of your associates can tell you who they liked, who they didn’t and why. Also make sure to personally interview several before deciding on who you will use for your reception. Personality is a big factor in the entertainment business as well as reputation. You also need to look for specifics. Does this person have an outline of how they will handle the event? Do they have suggestions for you concerning the timing of various aspects of wedding receptions? What is their personal experience? Do they have specific wedding reception experience? Who do they have lined up to replace them in case of an emergency? These are all important questions to ask. Remember, this person is going to do much more then just play a selection of music. And the selecting of music is something that you need to discuss with your partner well before you actually hire a DJ. Many people have horror stories to share of events they attended where the music wasn’t that great. Either it didn’t fit the event or it was too hard to dance to, or was inappropriate in some way. This is where a DJ’s own experience is valuable. They can tell you what works and what doesn’t and why. Of course you should have music you enjoy and you probably have personal preferences, but although the wedding is all about you and a good DJ should make sure to focus on the bride and groom, the music needs to have enough variety to please everyone in attendance. Professional DJ’s will have a contract for you to sign that will stipulate the specifics of the gig, including date, price, time and other agreed upon items. Once you’ve hired your entertainment for the evening, you can relax and know that you’ve taken care of a very important component of your event.

How to select your reception hall

electing a site for your wedding reception is a task that can become complicated but you can simplify it by doing your homework well in advance. The first thing to do is to make a list of questions and be sure to take the time to go over them with the management of the facility. Talking to friends who have recently gotten married will be helpful in making your list. They can tell you some of the problems they encountered. There is nothing like learning from experience and it’s always better to learn from someone else! First off when selecting a facility you need to make sure it is available for your date and can handle the number of guests your expecting. While there are major things to consider, smaller details are equally important. You may want to consider whether there is air conditioning, handicap accessibility, and/or a private room for the bridal party to use during the reception- it all depends on what your personal party needs are. Décor is also important. Instead of relying on photos, it is better to personally inspect the reception rooms yourself. Find out if you can make any adjustments to the décor, and if you are able to bring in your personal decorations are there restrictions? You also want to be sure that there will not be any changes such as remodeling taking place at the facility during your party. Food and alcohol is another major component to your reception and you need to be clear regarding your needs when interviewing possible sites. For many, the most important planning factor is the money and what you will get for it. How many hours will you be renting the facility for and who will be setting up and cleaning up is important to know. You will also want to know if you can have access to the hall prior to the reception time. Also, what does the facility offer in the way of a sound system for your DJ or band? The total rental fee can be steep, so make sure to inquire exactly what will be included in the contract. Make sure to inquire as to whether there are wedding packages available, and do not be afraid to ask for a discount, bartering is common and most prices are negotiable. It is important to find out about the deposit requirements and insurance. What is the companies policy regarding unforeseen problems? Make sure to read all the fine print before signing a contract and do not sign anything at all until you have taken the time to think it over. Remember, like any other business, renting a hall is a competitive one and it’s a smart move to check out several before deciding on one. This is a day that will be remembered and The Courtyard by Marriott-Fitchburg is a premier choice for the occasion, for a number of reasons. A Quinceañera is a Latino celebration that marks the transition of a young girl entering into womanhood. Also known as a Sweet 15, the occasion is one filled with tradition and the celebration is a very important part of the Latino culture. According to Catering Sales Manager Olivia Armstrong, the Marriott offers a huge variety of facilities and services to its guests, making the hotel the perfect place to have the celebration. “We offer seven meeting rooms and an overall total of 71,000 square feet of meeting space,” she said. The hotel is also one of the largest in the area for events. The generous selection of function rooms is not all that visitors to the hotel will find there are also numerous services available that allow for families to custom design their daughters’ Quinceañera. “We work with area vendors to provide you with a selection of products, floral arrangements, decorations, lines and many other services,” explained Mrs. Armstrong. And if you want to bring in your own people, that is fine too. The hotel understands that many families would like to retain their own outside selections for services. “Often there will be friends or family members that want to provide services for the event and that is fine,” said the Service Manager. Your daughters Sweet 15 party is a very special event and the Marriott provides a unique food service to its guests that many of its clients are happy to discover. “Our chef will create any menu you want,” explained Mrs. Armstrong. That feature alone, makes the hotel the number one choice for anyone planning an event. Most hotels in the area offer a limited menu and when you hold a function there, you have to select from that menu, a fact that doesn’t always sit well with families looking to provide a

Having the ability to create a custom menu for that occassion is a huge selling point to many event planners. Quinceañera specialized menus are only one of the features the hotel offers, there is also contemporary décor throughout the building. The space underwent a complete renovation two years ago and guests now enjoy a beautiful and up to date look. For out of town guest, there are luxurious rooms available and on site there is also the renowned CoCo Key Water Resort. The resort offers a variety of water park fun and discounted tickets are available for your guests when they stay at the hotel. CoCo Key Water Resort is the only indoor water park in Massachusetts. The Courtyard by Marriott provides not only an execellent reception facility but even a place to let loose and have fun on a cloudy day in the Winter. The CoCo Key Water Resort is also available for birthday parties and other events. From start to finish, the Marriott seeks to provide a family friendly environment for you to enjoy. Although the hotel has many meeting rooms available for your Quinceañera, party planners are encouraged to reserve their venue early on in the planning process. Customarily, a Quinceañera can take anywhere from 6 months to 2 years to plan for and selecting the location of the party is the first step to take when planning. According to Mrs. Armstrong, the meeting room rental fees are comparative, if not competitive with other facilities in the area price wise. Availability for booking generally depends on the time of year. Since a Quinceañera event is lined up with a girl’s birthday, there is generally more flexibility available for booking dates. n your wedding day you want to make sure that your hair and makeup are perfect! And the best way to do that is with a ‘trial run’ from a reputable stylist. After all, you spent a lot of time selecting all the details of your special day, you found the perfect dresses for you and your bridesmaids, you booked your venue, taste tested for the menu and your cake and interviewed your photographer and disc jockey. The day is fast approaching and you’re almost at the finish line- but your not quite there yet. Before you can check off your whole ‘wedding to do’ list, you have to make sure to do a trial run of your hair and make up. And that is not as easy as it sounds. This is a day that will live in your family’s memories forever, as will the all-telling photographs. So you want to make sure that everything is perfect. You the bride are the star of the show, (sorry guys!) and you need to look the part! This is not the time to enlist the services of your cousin who you played dress up with as children. Nor is it the time to cut corners and shop by price alone! Remember, once the wedding takes place, there is no ‘do-over’. It is important that you get it right the first time. And selecting the correct hairstyle for your face and dress and the make up that enhances and compliments your skin tone is something that must be done in advance. The venue, whether is it inside or out, is very important to how you prepare yourself, as is the style of the dress. When you selected it, did you envision your hair up or down? Will you be wearing a head piece? How about jewelry? What type of lighting will there be during the ceremony? Bright natural sunlight or soft romantic candle light will definitely affect the type of make up you will want to wear. A good stylist is found in many ways. References from friends are helpful and the internet is also a good tool. It’s important to do your research. Once you’ve selected someone, you need to look at other factors as well. Determine before hand whether the stylist will be doing just your hair and make up, or all the women in the wedding party. You also need to choose where you will be getting ready for the ceremony. Some brides and their attendants get ready at home others choose to have the stylist come to the venue in order to avoid any possible problems en route to the ceremony. However you choose to prepare for your big day, just remember that practice makes perfect and if you take the time to prepare in advance, your will ensure that you will look picture perfect! Choosing a wedding photographer

here is more to choosing your wedding photographer then calling up the most popular photography studio in town. It’s important to remember that just just because a friend has a decent camera and is willing to take pictures for you, that it doesn’t qualify them as a good choice for doing your wedding photography. This is one of the most important days of your life and you want the memories to be preserved by a skilled professional. When selecting a photographer for your event, it’s important that you not only seek out recommendations for friends and relatives, but you need to personally interview several yourself. And to those interviews you need to take a list of questions to ask. Photography, like all art forms, has several styles and it is important to find out if who you interviewing matches up with the style of your event. Find out if the photographer is formal, relaxed, traditional, creative or artistic. It’s important to know if the photographer is going to do color or black and white photography, or a combination of both. If the studio has more then one photographer, then you will want to find out exactly who will be covering your event and also if they have other events scheduled for the same weekend. You don’t want to hire someone who is going to be booked back to back because then you will feel rushed while they are at your event. The equipment to be used is also an area that needs to be looked at. What kind of cameras will be used? If an accident were to happen, is there backup equipment at the ready? And is it of equal quality to the other equipment? Also, how intrusive will the equipment be? Will there be tripods, lighting and other assistants in use? After you have asked the questions most important to you, you need to then ask questions of yourself. Were you impressed with the samples of the photographers work? Did you find the studio to be one that you feel you could work with? Did you like the photographer as a person, did you enjoy their personality? Do you feel that they really listened to you? It’s important to check their references as well. Find out if their other customers were satisfied with their work and if there were any problems they experienced. As time consuming as it may seem to do the interviews and follow up on the references, you will be glad you did. Remember, your photographs will capture a once in a lifetime experience and you want those memories captured perfectly by a professional. By : Gail Stanton
