The Quinceañera Tradition
quinceañera is a celebration of a young girl’s coming of age- her 15th birthday. As latinos assimilate to American traditions, they are embracing the Sweet Sixteen celebration with Latino traditions. The celebration highlights the aspects of religion, family, friends, music, food and dance. The celebration begins with a religious ceremony followed by a reception. There are many traditions used at the celebrations and one of the most popular ones is the Changing of the Shoes by the Quinceañera’s father. This tradition is a symbol of the Quinceañera’s transformation from a little girl (flats) to a young lady (heels). Once the shoes are changed, the father invites the Quinceañera to a slow bolero. Another highlight of the reception is a choreographed waltz by the Quinceañera and her court. (Source: Quinceanera-Boutique.com) Today, the celebration has expanded to include the dance with the father, a waltz with the court and choreography to a mix of Latin popular music. Ritmos Academy has been providing choreography for many celebrations in Worcester and the surrounding areas. Please call us or visit us for more information. We are in the process of producing a ballet production of “Quinceañera” to be premiered at the Worcester Public Library in Late April. Your Quinceañera Budget
he first step in planning your Quinceañera should be establishing your budget. The amount of money you have to work with will determine almost every other aspect of your Sweet 15 party, from the venue and invitations to the favors and food. Determine the amount of money you actually have saved up and ready to go toward your Quinceañera. If there is not enough money for the Quinceañera you want, consider asking padrinos , madrinas and grandparents, to sponsor your Quince. These can be relatives, friends or others close to you who will help pay for some of the party expenses. You could ask your favorite aunt to purchase your Quinceañera dress and your godparents to purchase your food. A Quinceañera is a family affair; your family and friends will be honored that you asked them to be part of your special day. Once you have determined your budget, it’s time to start allocating the funds. Make a list of everything you’ll need to pay for and what the estimated cost will be. Remember, do not budget money you do not (or will not) have. Set a realistic budget and stick with it. You can plan a beautiful Quinceañera with $2,000 or $25,000. All it takes is a little creativity, a lot of help and a clear vision of what you want.
