WELCOME TO MULKADEE

A MESSAGE FROM OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

D R C AT H Y D AY

The theme of our Mulkadee Youth Arts Festival this year is “Journey” and it is quite apt considering we have travelled for some twelve years to bring this event to the level it is today. Next week we will also be celebrating Catholic Education Week across Queensland under the theme, “Sharing the Journey.” Indeed, we as Catholic school communities are on the journey of faith and living our lives to the fullest, and the arts is a key part of this. It is very fitting that Mulkadee runs into Catholic Education Week, a celebration of all that makes our Catholic school communities unique. This year we are delighted to again offer tonight’s performance, a culmination of the week’s work. It is one of the many wonders of Mulkadee – how one thousand children can come together at the beginning of the week without any preparation or knowledge of the pieces they will learn, and present this polished and professional performance five days later. It is always an incredible achievement. We have again provided a spectacular line-up of arts professionals who have led our workshops this week. We are all blessed to have had a week in their company, learning and sharing in their joy as they witness the transformation of the students throughout the week. This will be my final Mulkadee as I am retiring from Catholic Education in the Townsville Diocese after 12 years as

Executive Director. I look back at many things with happiness and pride, but in particular, at events such as Mulkadee which are one of those shining lights in our Diocese. Mulkadee is a time of joy and celebration of the arts that I have always hoped will transpire to arts careers or just simply a life-long passion for the arts. We introduced the concept of Mulkadee in my first year in the role of Executive Director, and I leave seeing this event as a great achievement aiding the talent and collaboration of many great people. Once again I extend my heartfelt appreciation to all involved behind the scenes who make this great event happen. Our school principals and teachers, our TCEO staff and event crews, staff at the venues, our arts specialists, the sponsors, the children with their overflowing enthusiasm and of course our parents and families. Without each of you, this event could not happen. Thank you for sharing in our twelfth Mulkadee Youth Arts Festival. God’s blessings,

Dr Cathy Day

THE KING’S SCHOOL - SYDNEY

PRESENTED BY BEN CROCKER

BEN CROCKER Ben Crocker grew up on a farm near Abergowrie, in rural North Queensland, and finished his schooling at Kirwan State High School in 2003, learning from Craig Millar and Emma Crocker (Lees) in the brand program.

After graduating, Ben worked as Wind bands director at The Cathedral School from 2005-2006. He later studied Euphonium at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music, and was invited to conduct the University’s Brass Band in his first year of study. From 2009-2010 he held the musical directorship of the South Brisbane Federal Band, and worked with numerous ensembles throughout Queensland as a euphonium player and conductor. Ben also performed around Australia and New Zealand for 5 years as a member of the Brisbane Excelsior Band, Australia’s most successful Brass Band. A passionate advocate for the British Brass Band tradition, in 2011 Ben moved to Sydney as resident conductor of the St Marys Band, also taking up a position as Bands and Orchestras conductor at Sydney Church of England Grammar School. Awarded the Australian Band Conductor’s scholarship, he studied with the world’s foremost band conducting practitioner, Professor David Kind, and led St Marys through an unprecedented era of competition success, winning three

consecutive State Championships, and developing many of Australia’s next young brass players. As an established conductor within this medium, in 2015 Ben was invited to direct the Desford Colliery Band, one of the United Kingdom’s leading Brass Bands, on their annual International Tour. Having worked extensively as a conductor and clinician for school bands, Ben was appointed to the faculty of Sydney’s The King’s School as Head of Bands in 2016, overseeing the Band program at Australia’s oldest independent school. Ben is regularly engaged as an adjudicator and guest clinician, and has conducted ensembles at Baker College, Moriah College, Newington College, Ravenswood school for Girls, and Abbotsleigh School in Sydney. He has given workshops and educational concerts at Shrewsbury International School (Bangkok), The Regents Academy (Pattaya), and has conducted Germany’s leading Brass Band, Brassband 3BA, from Bavaria, as well as the Symphonic Band of the Leopold Mozart-Zentrum, in Augsburg.
