The 360 Celsius Asylum

DROP A LINE TO THE EDITOR editorial@360celsius.com

If I had my way, this magazine would feature a small image at the bottom corner of every page. Arranged in a flipbook-esque sequence, the series of images will begin with that of a clenched fist, and end with a raised finger. But I don’t want to be stoned (Actually, I’d like to, but still…) to death, careerwise, and be forced to make an honest living instead. I have had the honor of being part of an amazing team for a long, eventful year. And during my time here, I have learnt that the 360 Celsius office is actually a mental asylum. It is a happy place where the crazies prance around like two headed horses, and where pretentious snobs get fed with the same stuff that they are made of before being given the boot. It is a litmus test for lunacy, best expressed with the saying “If you can get along with us, you belong here.” With circus acts already parading the 360 Celsius office on a daily basis, it was just a matter of time before we finally decided to do the ‘Entertainment Issue’. Be prepared to enjoy your favourite dose of incoherent yet informative topics, printed on gorgeous glossy paper and bound together with highquality industrial-grade glue.

ON THE COVER If Game of Thrones was about the entertainment industry, we’d probably see something like this on one of its posters. With social media and other platforms dominating our lifestyles today, how do traditional media still remain relevant and strong? We speak to Seelan Paul, the CEO of Media Prima Radio Networks, to attempt to answer that question.

Tarantino’s flicks are generally iconic for the following elements - guns, violence, magnificent scripts, and of course, a mesmerising original sound track. This album is heavily informed by classic Western music which features catchy soundbites from the movie itself. But it’s not just the sound of twangy strings, purring trumpets, and vintage south-western grit that define the album, as it is also prominently lined with contemporary elements like rap, as well as other influences like retro funk and soul. Amongst the artists featured in this sound track are John Legend, Rick Ross, American singer Anthony Hamilton, and some of the best composers around. While some might argue that OSTs can only be enjoyed after watching the movie itself, a glance of the trailer would suffice to connect with the tastefully hard-sold theatrics of the Django Unchained OST.

ASIABEAT ANTHOLOGY

SHE’S GOT A WAY:

Suppose you’re new to Abel Tesfaye a.k.a The Weeknd, here’s a tip (especially if you’re Asian) – never play this album in front of your folks’. It’s got lyrics that are explicit enough to leave them squirming! But nonetheless, Trilogy is one of those albums that deserve your precious attention. Basically, it’s a repackaging. A compilation of three mixtapes, House of Balloons, Thursday, and Echoes of Silence, the songs are an unorthodox combo, mostly about sex, drugs and women. But it sounds fresh; as if someone has breathed new life into R&B.

Easily one of the best and most renowned Malaysian drummers around, Lewis Pragasam has played alongside some of the biggest names in both the local and international scene over the past few decades. He is also the founder of Asiabeat, a Malaysian based ‘World Music’ group. In his efforts to promote the evolution of the arts and to do charity, Lewis has released this 6-CD box set that contains every Asiabeat recording that has been compiled over the years as well as a 50-page Booklet filled with archival photographs, articles and more.

Where Are They Buried? How Did They Die? (Revised and Updated): Fitting Ends and Final Resting Places of the Famous, Infamous, and Noteworthy

Author Tod Benoit Publisher Black Dog & Leventhal Publishers For those with a fascination for dead famous people, Tod brings this detailed and well-written addition to any morbid library collection of the macabre. There are locations of 500 celebrity grave sites making this a hefty tome of tombs indeed! The famous dead are arranged according to subject matter for example actors from Humphrey Bogart to Heath Ledger, singers from Elvis to Sid Vicious, sports figures and more. But Tod doesn’t just focus on the more media exposed ones. He also writes about painters like Salvador Dali and Michelangelo, authors like poet Robert Frost and Margaret Mead and even notorious figures such as John Dillinger the bank robber and Jack Ruby, the man who killed Lee Harvey Oswald are also included. Not only is their resting place listed but also their place of birth and a little of everything in between. Thus we get fascinating insights and info on the loves, lives and legacies of each personality. Tod writes with wry humor and his advice can be amusing as well as practical for example tips on how to avert graveyard security are included for the adventurous. There may be occasional lapses in biographical detail from time to time. Only natural due to the sheer numbers of (dead) people involved. Maybe someone was not someone’s wife but a mistress, or that directions to a particular burial site are wrong by one turn. This sort of nitpicking does seem a bit anal, unless you’re actually using the book as a map to visit said site. Thank god for Google maps then I say.

Bond On Bond: Reflections on 50 years of James Bond Movies Author Sir Roger Moore Publisher Lyons Press To celebrate last year’s impressive Skyfall release and box-office ticket sales, here is a (belated) offering to the altar of all things Bond…James Bond. Written by that icon of all things suave and debonair, Sir Roger Moore, this is an in-depth, behind the scenes view into James Bond like you have never seen before. And before one thinks this is another money grubbing exercise by a has-been, you’re wrong. Proceeds from the book go to UNICEF. There are sections on the gadgets, the cars and most importantly to some, the babes (I mean the women). Readers also get a low down on all the villains such as the iconic Dr. No, Goldfinger or Lockjaw; as well as the exotic and not so exotic locations such as Istanbul, Paris and many more. There’s a full dossier on all the actors who have played 007 over the years starting from Sir Sean Connery, George Lazenby, Sir Roger himself, Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan and the latest, Daniel Craig. Sir Roger’s wry, self-deprecating wit shines throughout (keep an eye on the captions accompanying the photos) and we get warm recollections of his time as Bond. Unsurprisingly this is where he has the most to offer as he tells of rewriting Q’s lines of gibberish at the last minute and the inane and funny comments of his female co-stars while on set.

Kardashian Konfidential: New! Inside Kim’s Wedding with Never-Seen Pix,

To wit; if you’re into all things Bond, get this book, if only because it was written by the smoothest smirk to ever wear the tux and license to kill, Sir Roger Moore.

Plus a New Chapter!

Author Kim Kardashian , Kourtney Kardashian, Khloe Kardashian Publisher St. Martin’s Press The Kardashian sisters have pretty much perfected the Paris Hilton school of self-marketing (publicity whoring) and elevated it to an art. Despite lacking any discernible acting talent (save of the illicit kind in Kim’s case), being unable to sing and dance or even lip-sync, they have multiple TV shows that follow their apparently oh-so-amazing lives. Their word is sought after in the fashion industry, their patronage is welcomed by any establishment and the media seems to absolutely fawn over them. They are even rated higher on the celeb scale than genuine actors, singers, song writers and other creative artist types. Never has so much spotlight bulbs and magazine ink been wasted on such flakiness. Nevertheless one must salute the utter cojones of the Kardashians in marketing a product that consists wholly of their empty selves and nothing else. The sisters are all about style with virtually no substance. Much like this book, really. There are no shocking revelations here. Any secrets and surprises worth revealing would have already been shown on that shrieking pantomime of a TV show of theirs. They don’t even talk about the infamous sex tapes nor are there any photos, so pervs better think twice before parting with your hard earned cash. For Kardashianista’s there is plenty to whet their appetite. Gems of family history like Khloe being homeschooled because she couldn’t match her sisters reputation to Kourtney being a bitch to Kim when they were younger and Kim’s secret marriage in Vegas which she tried to keep secret from the family. Enthralling in its vapidity. Only die-hard fans will truly care.

AUTHOR’SHIGHLIGHT

Arnold Alois Schwarzenegger Born in Austria on July 30, 1947, Arnold immigrated to the United States in 1968 at the age of 21. He’s been a seven time Mr. Olympia, a four time Mr. Universe and was even a co-owner of Planet Hollywood (a unique honour he shared with action star buddies Sylvester Stallone, Bruce Willis and Demi Moore). He’s played a barbarian, a ruthless cyborg, a kindergarten teacher and a pregnant man, among others. On the political front Arnold had been appointed to Bush Senior’s Cabinet and served as Republican Governor of California. Arnold showed he was no political partisan, crossing the aisle and marrying Maria Shriver, niece of Democratic President John F. Kennedy. Arnold and Maria were blessed with four children. Throughout his bodybuilding and movie career Arnold was dogged by allegations of steroid abuse and sexual harassment, but nothing came of it. Then in 2011 the story broke that the ‘Governator’ had fathered a child from an affair with his housekeeper Mildred Patricia Baena in 1997. That would prove to be the death knell for his marital life.

Total Recall Author Arnold Schwarzenegger

Publisher Simon & Schuster

Arnold, Ah-nuld Schwarzenegger. Mention his name and you imagine the hulking death machine from the future in a leather jacket and shades saying, “I’ll be back” in a light Austrian accent. Enthusiasts of the male form will remember the bulging muscles. Or even the term ‘governator’ which was in vogue a few years back. And you will also recall his fall from grace, the end of his marriage, all due to him being a randy goat with the housekeeper.

He talks about using steroids but claims not to have known it was wrong. Although he doesn’t brush it aside, it’s clear that he feels he’s done nothing wrong and his conscience is clear.

This is pretty much Arnold’s step-by-step path to success. Authored by him, it certainly is no objective account of his life. Merely his version of how and why he achieved fame, fortune and glory. It is full of reminisces and anecdotes and is a pretty good motivational guide for readers. On the other hand it also feels like a slick self-image exercise after the damning and sordid scandal that ended his marriage broke.

020

Similarly concerning his infidelity and womanizing (which later led to the explosive scandal with the housekeeper and separation from then wife Maria Shriver) again, there is little contrition or repentance by Schwarzenegger. He acknowledges he did wrong, but seems to underplay the gravity of it. Whether it is read as the chronicle of an immigrant who achieved the American Dream, or a cynical attempt to rehabilitate his damaged public image, Total Recall is a fascinating peek at the man behind the muscles.

Sexual Intelligence Author Kim Catrall Publisher Bulfinch As ‘Samantha’ in ‘Sex and the City’, Kim Catrall played a sexually magnetic woman who indulged in her passions both for the sins of the flesh and for the audacity of living life at large. Here the woman behind the role uncovers the secrets of the bedroom and what making love is really all about. Don’t let the enticing cover fool you. This is no sex manual. Nor is it a lesson in the female orgasm. That was the subject of Kim’s first book. Instead ‘Sexual Intelligence’, explores sexual interactions and patterns by journeying into the history and culture of sex. It also provides an understanding of the mechanism and complexity that goes into human sexuality and sexual behavior. There is a scientific breakdown of how sex works from how friction and tactile sensation generate energy, increased blood flow to erogenous areas and neural responses to pleasure. But it’s not all dry and prosaic. Sex as image, fantasy and art is also presented with tales of ancient gods and goddesses cavorting in carnal celebration. Photos in the book are illustrative but never tacky or demeaning giving us a view of sex as the union of mind and body. There are also shots of Kim herself; this is her book after all. A small indulgence to her vanity.

At the end of the day it’s an informative and approachable guide that highlights the holistic nature of sexuality as a dance of desire, arousal, messaging and release (these are also the chapter titles in the book).

Author Pippa Middleton Publisher Viking Adult She exploded as a media sensation during the wedding of Prince William to her sister Kate Middleton. Since then she’s become a celebrity almost in her own right. Both the entertainment and tabloid dress especially in the UK are engrossed in following and commenting on her whether it be her style sense in clothes or her seemingly tumultuous love life (there was even an attempt to link her with Prince Harry). But the younger of the Middleton sisters has carried herself with grace and poise reminiscent of her older sibling, living life the way she wants. Having a penchant for catering and party planning, it is only natural for Pippa to share with avid readers the ingredients that go into making a successful party. So here we have ‘Celebrate’, which is full of tidbits and cooking recipes for any celebration and festive occasion. Pippa furnishes the brilliantly coloured photos and enticing dishes with advice on party preparations like for example; adding glitter to pine cones adds festive cheer for Christmas or making stained glass bats for Halloween. This isn’t a book full of innovative ideas and cool, new-fangled foods. It’s a helpful guide to having a traditional British style party for any and all festivities. Thus there are excerpts about having ‘conker’ games (horse chestnut tree seeds) and in lighting bonfires. In the Scottish recipes section she writes about Tartans (traditional Scottish crisscross designs on kilts). Regrettably there was no recipe for making Haggis though.

TOP UNDERRATED MOVIES OUR PICK OF WHAT IS WORTH WATCHING We don’t need to tell you about all the mainstream movies that will be coming to cinemas to you “this summer…”, because you’ve probably heard it from a dramatic voice. After wading through the turgic sludge of silver screen disappointments that have been spitting increasingly blatant intellectual insults at our faces since someone decided that Adam Sandler was funny, we’ve managed to scavenge bits of hope in humanity from over the years. So here are some movies that you may have forgotten or overlooked that you can probably enjoy if you have the time.

Brotherhood of the Wolf (2001) Samuel Le Bihan, Mark Dacascos, Emilie Dequenne, Monica Bellucci and Vincent Cassel.

This French offering opens in 18th century France with a series of brutal killings in the region of Gevaudan. A beast is stalking the people and tearing the peasants apart. Hunters, soldiers and ne’er-do-wells flock to the province. The Royal Court is suitably perturbed and excited (hey they had no TV or Internet back then) that the royal taxidermist and his Iroquois companian are dispatched to find out what is going on. But there is much more to the Beast than meets the eye. And that’s just for starters. What follows is one of the most stunning cinematic experiences I’ve had in a while (back when I first saw it years ago). This film has almost everything. It is part thriller, part period piece, and mystery. As well as

including elements of horror, martial arts, and a dash of political and religious intrigue. Back then I thought I could easily guess the plotline of most movies. Not this one. It’s a mind bender alright. Seriously, if you’ve never seen this, don’t spoil it by reading the summary on wiki. Get it, watch it and experience it for yourself. It will take you on an amazing ride. A sumptuous swashbuckling adventure for the senses, we even get to see Monica Belluci’s ample assets, if briefly. Heartily recommended. Rotten Tomatoes score: 72%

The Burbs (1989)

Tom Hanks, Bruce Dern, Carrie Fisher, Rick Ducommun, Corey Feldman and Henry Gibson.

A wonderful little comedy thriller about the one odd house on every street; that kids whisper about and dare each other to go up to and ring the bell. The creepy house whose inhabitants are never around to mingle with the neighbours during garden parties and church fetes, whose doors are always shut and their windows covered in drapes.

stumble and fumble their way through a suburban dweller’s worst nightmare. Potential weirdoes living across the street. Of course one cannot help notice the parallels between how the suspicion of the cul-de-sac residents against the Klopeks mirror those of many Americans when it comes to immigrants and outsiders.

In a quiet little cul-de-sac, everyman Ray Peterson, his neighbour and chief instigator Art Weingartner, and a host of eccentric characters suspect and spy on the new additions to the neighbourhood, the Klopteks. Their scruffy demeanour and unsavoury habits (for example digging holes in their garden in the middle of the night and the disappearance of the former owner of the Kloptek’s residence), invites suspicion and paranoia in Ray and the others. Things come to ahead as Ray, Art and the rest of the eccentric crew

This darkly humorous tale foreshadows the film’ American Beauty’ and the hit series ‘Desperate Housewives’ where wellkept gardens and picket fences hide horrifying secrets and jolly homemakers could potentially be cold-blooded murderers.

The lesson here is don’t judge a book by its cover. Not really. An entertaining look into the psyche of Americaville Rotten Tomatoes score: 46%

Hunchback of Notre Damme (1996)

Tom Hulce, Demi Moore, Kevin Kline, Paul Kandel, Jason Alexander, Charles Kimbrough, David Ogden Stiers, Tony Jay, and Mary Wickes. In a nutshell this is the story of how an outcast, deformed bell ringer in Notre Damme escapes from the shadow of the monster that has ruled his life. In the process he finds out about love and more through meeting free-spirited gypsy girl Esmeralda, along with an understanding of who he is and his place under the sun. Disney’s Hunchback was relatively successful; however the emphasis on mature themes may have made it less palatable for the kids. The film opens with a baby about to be hurled down a well, and a dead mother. Quasimodo, unlike other Disney heroes of the past is a horribly, misshapen croissant shaped lead with a gentle and kind disposition who in the end, does not get the girl. The villain Judge Claude Frollo is a man reeking of piety yet is blind

to his own depravity. Issues concerning moral corruption, religious hypocrisy and carnality are raised, probably for the first time in a Disney animation for kids. Frollo’s assertion, “You know I’m so much purer than, the common, vulgar, weak, licentious crowd” - lies at the heart of many whose sanctimonious self-satisfied belief leads them standing on judgment upon others and not themselves. This is deep stuff, even for adults. A fantastic retelling of Victor Hugo’s somber tale of unrequited love as an affirmation of the human spirit and the power of compassion and hope. Rotten Tomatoes score: 73%

FILLING IN THE BLANKS Distilling Creativity To Fuel A Global Creative Movement

In collaboration with a new generation of artists, ABSOLUT VODKA recently introduced ABSOLUT BLANK, a global creative movement, in which ABSOLUT appears as a catalyst for contemporary leading-edge creativity. ABSOLUT now announces the ABSOLUT VODKA BLANK EDITION, designed by German artist Mario Wagner. The limited edition bottle features Wagner’s unique graphic expression, and draws strongly from the artwork he did for the ABSOLUT BLANK initiative a few months ago. “Being one out of 20 artists to participate in the ABSOLUT BLANK creative movement was very inspiring. ABSOLUT gave us great artistic freedom, and I loved meeting artists from other countries and different creative disciplines. Therefore I was thrilled when I got the opportunity to extend my collaboration with ABSOLUT by creating my own bottle,” says Mario Wagner. “The bottle design is very personal to me, as it expresses my fascination with space and time travel. I’ve had a lifelong desire to travel to the moon.” Wagner’s bottle is inspired by the visual language of the 1960s, an era in which the space race and travelling to the moon captivated the world. To ensure continuity, he used some of the visual elements that were also in his artwork for the ABSOLUT BLANK campaign. “Each visual element is there for a reason,” Wagner explains. “The astronaut is a recurring character in my work, and it creates intrigue to the overall piece. With an empty speech bubble I give a voice to the astronaut, but I let the audience decide what he says. There are also planets, spaceships and the all-seeing eye, which represents a person looking at the world from another dimension or place in time”. “Mario Wagner has created a captivating and imaginary piece of art, and a bottle that will stand out on the shelf. Creating a unique bottle was not part of the initial plan, but we love it when our collaborations evolve into something new. This project beautifully shows how creativity leads our brand forward,” says CK Tan, Managing Director, Pernod Ricard Malaysia.

026

ABSOLUT BLANK is an ABSOLUT collaboration where 20 artists were given a literal ABSOLUT blank bottle shaped canvas, and asked to fill it in with their creativity. Mario Wagner was one of the artists featured in this campaign. His work has been showcased in print, outdoor advertising and TV. ABSOLUT has always challenged conventions through creative collaborations with artists such as Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, Damien Hirst, and more recently Ellen von Unwerth and Spike Jonze. ABSOLUT BLANK is a daring new chapter for ABSOLUT. “In ABSOLUT BLANK, ABSOLUT has boldly made its iconic bottle into a blank canvas to inspire artists throughout the world to collaborate and fill it with creativity. We brought together creative collaborators from a variety of disciplines and watched the journey from pure white canvas to exceptional pieces of art. The result depicts how artists and creativity are inspired through ABSOLUT,” says Terence Ong, Sales and Marketing Director for Pernod Ricard Malaysia. The 20 artists participating in ABSOLUT BLANK represent a variety of creative disciplines from across the globe; from drawing, painting and sculpting to film making and digital art. Among the artworks are UVA’s high intensity, bright and striking light installations, Mario Wagner’s attention-grabbing cut-out imagery, the colourful and playful graphic design of Aesthetic Apparatus, the bold illustrations of Kinsey and the detailed work of Good Wives and Warriors. “With ABSOLUT BLANK, we want to contribute to a global creative movement, ultimately, making the world even more vibrant and exceptional. “It All Starts With an ABSOLUT BLANK,”” Mark Hamilton continues.

Bottom ‘JIM’ (2011) Left Husin Hourmain

Husin Hourmain is one of the rare Malaysian Contemporary Islamic Calligraphy artist. He has spent 3 prolific years to create a monumental series known as Awal Hurouf Asal Hurouf that consists of 30 Jawi alphabets. It is the first time a Malaysian artist creates his very own unique identity of our Islamic art. SHARE WITH US THE ELEMENTS THAT PROMPTED YOU ON THIS ARTISTIC JOURNEY. 3 YEARS WORKING on SUCH MONUMENTAL 30 PIECES WOULD HAVE TAKEN A TOLL ON YOUR ENERGY.

Since the day I was awed by those gigantic handpainted cinema posters, I fell in love with art. Yet like any normal person with the dilemma of survival and art I had to work in an advertising company for 18 years. Soon the inner art in me just overwhelmed everything else. I went to become a full time artist during the height of the 90s recession. In 2004, I had my first solo followed by the 2nd solo in 2008. I started working on my calligraphy taking it one step at a time. There are 3 parts to the development. In the first part (2009), the paintings perpetuated an expressive gestural lines, saturated with bright colors and projected an individual emotion. In the second part (2010), the pictorial scheme moved towards a bolder use of lines integrated within layered lettering composition. The third part (2011), the use of colours was minimal with bolder strokes.

NOT MANY MALAYSIAN ARTISTS EMBARK ON ISLAMIC CALLIGRAPHY ART, AND ESPECIALLY SO FOR MALAYSIA CONTEMPORARY ARTISTS. WHY IS THIS SO?

BEING AN ISLAMIC CALLIGRAPHY PAINTER, WHAT ARE THE CHALLENGES THE CONTEMPORARY ART WORLD POSEs TO YOU?

YOU SEEMED TO BE VERY MUCH INFLUENCED BY THE MALAY ARCHIPELAGO JAWI ALPHABETS. WHY FOCUS ONLY ON ALPHABETS RATHER THAN THE PHRASES?

In my early days, I took to Pollock’s and Rothko’s influence for my artworks. Through maturity over the years in art, I feel the need to start establish our own Malaysian contemporary art signature that isn’t derived from western contemporary art. Since the calling of my religion, I re-learn the alphabets from the basic as well as studying the calligraphic history throughout the world. Thus leading to Awal Hurouf Asal Hurouf. Each piece has various alphabets interweaving into each other to produce an alphabet form that looms above others. My very own way of contemporising our very own Malaysian Islamic Callipgrahy Art.

The influence of globalization and many other artists experimenting with new fads, I guess. I am not sure about others but personally I am just seeking my own roots.

Words are images too. With words we communicate. Words are an active mediator to conceptually project the meaning. I remember that the first word from Allah through Gabriel to Prophet Muhammad was “Read”. Even when we were schooled we learn the alphabets before we are able to read phrases. I took the same approach to query myself on how well do I know my basics. My concept was rather than jumping into phrases, better to allow everyone to visually understand the aesthetic forms of the Jawi alphabets.

I have never considered contemporary art as a challenge. Rather it’s an opportunity to enable today’s society of Muslims and nonMuslims to understand Islam through simple visual projections.

WHAT UNIQUE IDENTITY DOES MALAYSIA ISLAMIC CALLIGRAPHY HAS TO OFFER?

Historically, the relationship between Malay Archipelago and Arabs can be traced back to the 11th century. The first physical evidence of Islam was a stone inscribed with Arabic letters dating back to 1303 AD, found in Terengganu River. The inscription of the stone recorded an edict to promulgate Islamic legal provisions and a proclamation ordering rulers and governors to uphold the Islamic faith and the teaching of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). The Terengganu Stone is inscribed in Malay language using the Arabic letters, known locally as Jawi script. Jawi is essentially Malay language written in a derivative of Arabic script. The word Jawi is derived from the Arab word al-jawah, referring to Sumatera Island and also indicating the Malay Archipelago as whole. According to W. Marsden, Jawi in Malay language means ‘mixed’ or ‘crossed’. It elucidates the origin

030

of the script- Arab lettering, mixed with the Malay language. The convergence of Islamic tradition in the Malay Archipelago indicates the leniency of Malay culture in accepting the modesty of Islam. Hence, the Malays adapted the teaching of Islam and converting their lifestyle altogether – socially and politically. So it has been till today.

YOUR 3RD SOLO AWAL HUROUF ASAL HUROUF COMING UP OFFICIALLY THIS MARCH. ENLIGTHEN US.

For the first time, all the 30 pieces will placed together as one big set at White Box Publika. It will be a major exhibition that I hope will wow the local audience and also perhaps bring international recognition to the contemporary Islamic calligraphy art of Malaysia. This important exhibition will serve to be part of Malaysian Art History and thus encourage more people to understand Islam as a religion through visual communication.

“I HAVE NEVER CONSIDERED CONTEMPORARY ART AS A challenge. Rather it’s AN OPPORTUNITY TO ENABLE TODAY’S SOCIETY of Muslims and non-Muslims TO UNDERSTAND ISLAM THROUGH SIMPLE VISUAL PROJECTIONS.”

Images: Right ‘FA’ (2009) Bottom Husin wanted to avoid regularities in his process, eluding the phrase - seen one, seen all.

2009

He painted four different versions of his first letter, Alif. “Art takes time to nurture. We cannot push the creativity. We let the creative enterprise to flow out of your soul. Artwork represent the artist. If the artist is honest with his art, it will distinguished favorably”. Eight paintings completed during the year – Ba, Ta, Tha, Rho, Fa, Qaf, Nun and Ha. His early Awal huruof, Asal huruof paintings possessed an expressive gestural lines, saturated with bright colors. Each subject is centered in its field, the size and proportion just adequate to contain it. Form are structured arbitrarily and overlapping each with other using the alphabet. A clear-cut figure ground differential is set up, which Husin then breaks down by integrating the subject with it surrounding space.

2010

In the second year, his pictorial scheme developed towards a bolder use of lines integrated within layered lettering composition. The works in this period are in the experimentation phase as he tries to break his regularities. For instance, Sin (2010) preserves the structural and expressive

lines, but with bolder use of brushstrokes. Compare to Shim (2010), the composition is less crowded. The figures are not placed in the center but rather exceeded the picture plane, as if we have to imagine the rest of the alphabet. In this transitional work, Husin consciously created ambiguity, whereas in his subsequent paintings, he used large open brush strokes exploiting the fluidity of the medium. “This is the difficult period of the production as I’m moving into the new studio. It takes time in readjusting life and working attitude to a new environment. I even stopped painting for six months just to get into the mood. I have to work faster in order to finish before the dateline to the point that all my paintings look similar”. Consequently, most of his works are being rejected. “Luckily, my dateline has been lifted. It granted me total control of my art direction. So I started looking for new inspiration and getting into a discussion with several friends in the art scene”. Art needs to be discussed within the community to get new insights and exchanging of ideas so that the art constantly evolve in time. This rejuvenate its potential and creates a healthy intellectual discourse.

031

2011

Husin continued his work with a new prospect. He adopted several aspects of minimalist painters’ work in his subsequent paintings. The use of color is restrained to monochromatic effect giving a dominant impact on the subject. Husin shifted his focus more on a distinctive shape of the letter rather than blending in. The eye shift from color to color in an unstructured way, completely different from the linear ordering of the letters. The minimal implication on the surface are multilayered, the result of intense repetition of the brushstrokes. “Less is more”, best describes the paradoxical quality that lies in Husin formalistic outlook. Husin aptly administered textural effects by scratch marking the flat surface. His work rather than fleeing or evading realities deepen its meaning in order to cull its silence. In modulating the surface, the diverse gradation of the scratches implies the presence of the artist, whose hand, when hesitant, creates irregularities. The strokes following the course of the hand are not controlled; they occur as natural data, certifying the vital association of artifact and artifice.

Being the CEO of this young and creative family, what do you think needs to be done to keep everyone motivated and happy?

I think that is a very good question and a lot of HR specialists are asking the same question. I would say that the Gen Y workforce has totally different expectations from the older generations when it comes to work. They need to be inspired, so we need to enable and encourage them to achieve a lot more than what they originally set out to do; we need to empower them and build that environment for them. I believe that they will be very motivated to perform when they are able to be vocal, creative, and feel appreciated. Of course, the salary is something that everybody will be looking at whether you are Gen Y, Gen X, or a baby boomer. Money will always be a priority, but when all the other factors come into play, money will not be the sole priority.

Since you started out back in 1998, what were some of the major changes that you have witnessed throughout your time in the industry?

036

Between 1998 and 2005 the industry was relatively healthy, but it became far more competitive very quickly after that. This was mainly due to the fact that we had new players in town and everybody was stepping up their game to compete for their share of the pie.

speak to the market. We want to be seen as the market specialists for Gen Y and Gen Z. So our entire outlook, our manner of speaking and interacting, whether on our own or with partners and advertisers, has to be in line with what appeals to that audience.

The growing number of local radio stations was one thing, but we were also faced with the rapidly rising popularity of social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter, as well as newer ones like Instagram and Pinterest. These factors constantly change the dynamics on how we can complement our stations with social media.

We are always looking at ideas that will create ‘talkability’, because radio is no longer just about listening to music – it’s about having a conversation. The trick is to do something so interesting on your radio show that it would compel people, who listened to it on the way to work, to talk about it when they are at work.

Today, there are almost 50 radio stations operating nationwide, so it takes a lot to secure a spot amongst the top six pre-sets in everyone’s car, or even the number one smartphone application. It is targets like these that push us to our limits and keep us on our toes.

With the stiff competition surrounding you, how do you stand out from the rest?

What makes us stand out is how we engage the community; how we actually approach and

What are some of the biggest challenges in keeping with the trends?

Understanding the youth would have to be one of the biggest challenges. These days, a major trend can shift in less than six months. Take PSY for example, the man basically became an international sensation overnight, especially amongst the kids and teens. He alone has made such a massive cultural impact on a global scale with his music video (over 1.2 billion views to date) that people are still talking about six months after its release.

PSY is just one of many examples, therefore research remains one of our key components; we need to feel the pulse of the youth by engaging them on a regular basis. By doing research and listening to them, it is possible to spot certain upcoming trends. Once we have identified an upcoming trend, we need to ride that wave, not just to keep up, but to stay ahead of the curve and maximize it. Our very own Super Kampung Style video on YouTube, for example, managed to hit over three million views.

Since it has become extremely cheap and easy for people to bring their own music with them anywhere they go, what’s stopping radio from losing its audience to bespoke playlists on MP3 players and smartphones?

This is a good question, especially since we are moving into the digital age. I believe that radio will always evolve to remain a relevant component of today’s society, and it will always remain at the heart of what we do. Mobile devices like the iPod and MP3 players are great, but their main downside, I feel, is that they disengage you from the community. The truth is that we humans cannot be alone. So we will always consciously or unconsciously seek to connect and interact with the community one way or another. In this sense, radio will always be about building and maintaining that sense of community by interacting and connecting with people. Of course, we cannot ignore the fact that the trends are changing and evolving along with the advancement of technology, so we make sure that we grow with the flow by means of convergence.

What are examples of such efforts that you have been taking to converge?

Over the past decade, we at Media Prima Radio Networks have basically been enhancing and expanding our digital offerings via the internet, so that people are able to listen to all three of our radio stations and access our other digital material from anywhere in the world as long as they have an internet connection. To harness the power of today’s smartphones and tablets, we have also rolled out our interactive application for all three stations, through which people can not only listen to music, but also as download lyrics to their favourite songs, interact with the station, and gain access to a constantly growing base of engaging contents. I believe that it’s all about how we use social media to get people to listen to us. Currently, we do this by putting up the most interesting parts of our content on platforms like Facebook. This way, we can reach out to people who don’t listen to us in the morning, but spend their time on social media sites instead. We are constantly on the lookout for new innovations and opportunities to explore, because we believe that as much as it is important to keep up with the trends, it is also important to be able to set trends.

Have any of your stations pioneered any trends that people are now following? I don’t mean to brag when I say this, but as far as social media is concerned, Hot FM is the number one in the country in terms of having the largest fan base. The reason for that success is because we started that

space much earlier than everyone else to engage with our listeners. Apart from that, I believe in remixing ideas. Basically, you pick up a few good ideas, combine them, and make them your own. That is how everybody is doing it, and that is how we should make the best out of it.

With social media and new technology becoming a major part of today’s marketing strategies, do you still believe in the need of a ground team (i.e. cruisers)? I think it is very still very important to physically interact with your listeners because radio is still a very personal affair. You cannot build a relationship with your audience by relying only on broadcasting your content; you need to engage them up front and personal. The radio team is just an extension of that focus.

We are now involved in a lot of activities, not just with our ground team, but also with gigs. We actively seek partnerships with concert organizers just so that we can speak to our listeners on the same level. Since radio should be a personal form of communication, our listeners need to know that we are actually their friends. That is why it is so important to inject a personal touch, not just on air, but also online and on the ground.

Speaking of which, you personally experienced such a connection as a listener?

Of course! I don’t know about you, but I used to listen to the radio at night when I was still studying. During that time, I was listening to Casey Kasem, Shadow Stevens, and Fly Guy.

“...it’s always a challenge for me to make sure that I create the right environment for them to achieve their full potential.”

I felt like they were the kind of buddies who I could relate to and enjoy some drinks with. More amazingly though, is how they were able to make me feel like they were my buddies despite being disembodied voices.

What has been your main focus in terms of sponsorship and community work so far?

For the past two years, we’ve launched a program called LOL (Live Out Loud). The program is all about engaging secondary school kids all the way to university students, to give them a voice, and to let us listen to them directly without all the red tape and bureaucracy in the way. A site is currently being built to house this new community. We will also eventually provide internship programmes, as well as visiting schools and universities for activities and events. However, since we can’t possibly attend every one of those activities and events, we will invite them to make a pitch to us to tell us why we should come for it. For now and the foreseeable future, that will be our focus.

to what extent do you have to play safe with broadcasting in a country like Malaysia?

I believe that it’s about respecting and understanding of each other, because we are living in a multicultural country. Being a broadcaster, it is our responsibility to make sure that we do not go overboard. We may unintentionally offend someone from time to time, but so far we have found that the best thing to do is to apologize and move on. As long as we are mindful about what we do, we should be safe.

038

On that note, has Fly FM or any other station ever gotten into trouble from making prank calls?

We have not had any problems after years of prank calling the general public, because we always ask the ‘victims’ if they are okay with us airing the recorded prank calls before doing so. We will only air those who give us the go, but will respect them enough to not air the recording if they are not comfortable with the idea. So far, I have been getting the impression that Malaysians in general are very accommodating, because many of us we enjoy having fun and laughing at our own expense.

Social media can be as harmful as it is helpful. How do you deal with feedback that you receive through social media platforms?

When it comes to social media, people can put out their unfiltered opinions for all to see; when they dislike something, they’ll make it known. There is bound to be negative feedback in everything you do, the important thing is how you handle the feedback. Take Fly FM, Hot FM, and One FM for example, when people say that they are not happy with certain things that we did, we run a proper investigation. It could be due to a certain artist, song, error, or other issues, but as long as we have found that it was our mistake, we will own up to it and apologize publicly. And when we do that, we gain the respect of the public, because they can see that we are sincere and honest about it.

In terms of your reach, to what extent are you targeting the foreign or international market? We’re not looking into that at the moment, because our priority is still the Malaysian audience for now. However, our online presence and the use of apps are not just for the local fans, but also for the Malaysians who are studying or living overseas, and who miss the flavour from home.

Out of all your stations, is there one that gets preferential treatment in terms of focus?

No. All three stations (Fly FM, Hot FM, and One FM) are equally emphasized. There is no lead station because every station caters to a different demographic, and each station’s approach reflects the specific mind-set that defines its target audience.

Left Image: Blazer Raoul V-Neck Sweater Canali Watch Victorinox Right Image: Suits Raoul Watch Victorinox

The radio stations are generally known for their announcers and image branding, but I’m sure that there are unsung heroes that have played a major part in contributing to the success of the stations. Who may they be? I would say that everybody in the company played an important role. In our team, we always emphasize on team work and not just on the personalities. Overall success comes from the traffic team, sales team, branding and promotional team, engineering, and even reception. The success of a radio station does not come from the efforts of the announcer alone; everyone needs to do their part, believe in the brand, and showcase the brand and its value to each other and the world.

Sounds like a nice place to work at. What are some of the funniest and most interesting moments that you’ve experienced at your current position?

Let’s see, I got pranked by my own guys! It was quite funny actually, because they called my wife’s mobile phone very early in the morning so that they could catch me off guard. And it worked! I think that there were a lot of great moments in the seven years that I have worked here. I have been very lucky to have had a great, young team. As much as I believe that they have learned a lot from us, the management, I have also found myself learning a lot from them. The Gen Y folks are very vocal, so it’s always a challenge for me to make sure that I create the right environment for them to reach their full potential.

Did you have any prior management experience before you became the CEO of Media Prima Radio Networks?

I only had some background in programming when I started out in Media Prima, but I was immediately thrown into the deep end to start

running a business. I was basically forced to adapt, learn, and think on my feet very quickly. I am very lucky in that sense, because I have very good mentors to guide and advise me, like Ahmad Izham Omar. George Buschman from Australia was also one of my mentors – he basically set a lot of my business principles that I use to guide my approaches in business.

Are there any major plans for the future that you would like to share with our readers?

What would you consider to be some of the most important wisdom that you have gained throughout your career in broadcasting?

Apart from that, we are replicating and improving the winning convergence of radio, TV, and online content that have proved to be highly successful – ‘Kaki Bola’, for example, was the number one football show in the country last year. We also did ‘Versus’, which was phenomenal with half a billion impressions on Twitter. This year, we’re making similar content for the Chinese market with 8TV called the ‘Ultimate Song’. These are some of the exciting programs that you can look forward to in 2013.

I have learned that the only way for you to remain relevant, especially in this fast-moving industry, is to make sure that you never stop learning. So learn from your colleagues, partners, and other mediums; learn from other people. I once went for a training session where the trainer said that you will get a lot more ideas when you speak to strangers, so that will be my aim for 2013. I will just strike up a chat with random strangers, because they might just inspire me.

I can’t share much, but there will be something somewhere in Q3 or Q4 this year that we’re currently working on very closely with ‘Tonton’, which is our sister company under Media Prima Digital.

Seelan Paul is the CEO of Media Prima Radio Networks. An experienced radio announcer himself, Seelan Paul joined the group since 2005, and is basically one of the pioneers for radio in Media Prima. Today, the man manages the overall operations of Fly FM, Hot FM and One FM. Recently, he has also been appointed as the CSO for the TV networks which include TV3, 8TV, NTV 7, and TV 9. Despite his achievements so far, Seelan remains a humble man, constantly emphasizing on the fact that he never stops trying to understand the business better to see how he can actually add value to the group. Young, energetic, highly capable, and full of potential, the industry figure certainly has more coming his way, and is set to play a key role in shaping the local entertainment industry’s landscape.

JUST ADD WATER It is no secret that nothing sets the mood for romance like good ol’ candles. But did you know that with the help of some water, you could also easily trigger a chemical reaction within the hot wax that would send an epic fireball curling upwards into the air? Recently, a colleague told me about her unusual experience during a romantic candle light dinner that she was having the night before. According to her, it was all going well until her date decided to pour a cup of water onto a pool of almost completely melted candles in an attempt to douse the fire, and that’s where they got the shock of their lives.

DIY MUSHROOM EXPLOSIONS

As if to retaliate against the attempt to put it out, the melted wax instantly released a fireball that shot up two feet into the air. The surprise combustion briefly lit up the room and left the two of them wondering if they had accidentally poured vodka into the wax instead. They even stood there wondering if it could have had anything to do with paranormal activity for a moment. Fortunately, no one was hurt, and we found a scientific explanation for what happened that night.

However, unlike Hollywood-grade explosions that would usually involve expensive and sophisticated methods and materials to set off, wax fire is disturbingly simple and cheap to set off. And while we are obviously against the idea of putting your life and the lives of others in danger, we found that anyone with a candle, firewood, and water can easily recreate the iconic effect.

We eventually found out that it was not alcohol or paranormal activity; my colleagues’ date did attempt to put out the melting candles with water. In fact, the there is a scientific explanation behind the intriguing phenomenon called ‘Wax Fire’.

Upon further research, we found a lot of experiments and DIY guides with wax fire where people have managed to produce much larger fireballs. In many cases, these fireballs resembled the nostalgic and almost cliché Hollywood-grade nuke-like mushroom explosions.

THE SCIENCE

Most fires need three ingredients to burn – oxygen, fuel, and heat. 1. When candles burn, only the top surface is exposed to oxygen, so fire burns slowly as the wax melts. But that is not the case when water is added to hot liquid wax.

2. Notice how dripping wax freezes and floats on the surface when you drip it on water? That’s because water is denser than wax. So when you add water to hot liquid wax, it will sink to the bottom immediately. 3. As burning wax quickly heats up to well over 200°C, the water instantly vaporizes and expands by a thousand-fold in volume. 4. This rapid expansion violently forces the hot wax layer above it into the air as small droplets. 5. Now that a much bigger surface area of the wax is exposed to oxygen, the droplets are ignited very quickly to create the fireball that we are talking about.

THE CONCLUSION

There are hundreds, if not thousands, of pyrotechnic DIY guides available. With a bit of search engine know-how, one can learn how to make anything from five minute costfree projects to expensive and sophisticated fireworks which rival commercial-grade ones. But before we tickle your pyro-curiosity too much, let us get back to the fact that there are high risks involved in pyrotechnics, so it is best that we leave it to the professionals.

The Anti-Twilight Saga When Nosferatu meets Wuthering Heights, the results can be truly abominable

The Twilight Saga is a four book series written by bored housewife Stephenie Mayer based on a wet dream. The books, imaginatively titled Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse and Breaking Dawn- chronicle the stirring love story of listless Bella Swan and lifeless Edward Cullen, with hopeless Jacob Black tagging along for scraps. The books sold approximately 116 million copies, spawned four box-office movies and legions of screaming fans. It even has its own religion. This article explains why Twilight’s appeal is so damn appalling. * For those who have been blissfully ignorant of the Twilight phenomenon, yet have a morbid curiosity to eventually sample the books someday, a word of caution before proceeding. Here there be spoilers.

The Love Triangle Bella Swan: The Bratty Spoiled Princess

Isabella Marie Swan is one of the most unlikeable protagonists to have ever graced a page. Exaggeration? Not really. Within the first few chapters we find that she whines about nearly everything, for example like the weather. She only thinks of herself, and has a contemptuous/derisive opinion of her father and mother and the town he lives in, Forks. She can’t be arsed to be nice to people who are nice to her and is only interested in the beautiful and rich, like the Cullens. That despite being desired by almost every boy she encounters such as Mike and Eric early on, and later Jacob and Edward - she thinks herself plain and unworthy. But truth is she just wants to be adored by the right kind of people; those that are better looking, hotter, than the ones that pursue her. So yes, Edward was perfectly suited to attract Bella’s attention. Here is one of many reasons why some think she’s a nasty piece of work. When Bella heard that Tyler was telling people he was taking her to the prom, her reaction is telling: “I ground my teeth.”Do you think that if I ran him over with my truck he would stop feeling guilty about the accident? That he might give up on making amends and call it even?” “ (Twilight)

044

Tyler was trying in his own daft way to make amends because he almost killed her, and this is how Bella reacts? It’s unbelievably crass and self-centred. Here she demonstrates an utter lack of empathy for the poor guy who was probably wracked with intense guilt and who was trying to make it up to her. Maybe another reader can find this tolerable. Not this reviewer.

Mary Sue-ism

A Mary Sue is often defined as “a fictional character, usually female and especially in fanfic, whose implausible talents and likeableness weaken the story.” (Wiki) Bella is a ‘Mary Sue’ because firstly everyone wants to be her friend, or get to know her. Edward informs Bella that he had read the minds of Fork residents and everyone wanted to know about her. Despite thinking herself plain the other girls are jealous of her looks, proving she is actually otherwise. She thinks them shallow, yet is fascinated by the rich, beautiful Cullens and ultimately falls for the ‘hottest’ of them all. Her powers make her unique, special. Her mind cannot be read (unlike all other humans before). She also develops a psychic shield to block vampire abilities. Rendering even the Vampires powerless before her. Not only that but whereas Newborns (newly sired vampires) have a thirst for blood that is uncontrollable, Bella (you guessed it) is the only one able to control her blood lust.

Bella=Mayer

Bella Swan is a self-insert of Stephenie Mayer because this is at heart, her fantasy. Compare Mayer’s own vision of what Bella’s appearance is like with a photo of Mayer. Note the resemblance. Bella Swan is a younger, more slender, more beautiful version of her own self. Bella is her projection, that is why Bella is a ‘Mary Sue’ and the story revolves around her. It is also why in the novel, Bella is always loved and adored and the world, the universe adapts itself so that Bella is never wrong- because the Twilight-verse itself conforms to her. Mayer admitted that Twilight came about because she had a dream one night. In it she saw a girl and a vampire in a field. Bet you a dollar that girl was Mayer herself. Bella Swan gets her hearts desires, the perfect lover and his hunky rival, even a baby with an awkward name (despite earlier being stated in the novels that Vampires cannot have children) yet the universe and the author not only grant her a special dispensation but she also escapes her parental burden since she now has ‘Uncle’ Jacob to groo- take care of the little super powered brat. Those that offend Bella, or just rouse her ire for simply existing, experience a form of ‘BellaKarma’ and are punished in the book. Lauren Mallory was the most popular girl in

Photo: Stephanie Meyer

“In my head, Bella is very fair-skinned, with long, straight, dark brown hair and chocolate brown eyes. Her face is heart-shaped—a wide forehead with a widow’s peak, large, wide-spaced eyes, prominent cheekbones, and then a thin nose and a narrow jaw with a pointed chin. Her lips are a little out of proportion, a bit too full for her jaw line. Her eyebrows are darker than her hair and more straight than they are arched. She’s five foot four inches tall, slender but not at all muscular, and weighs about 115 pounds. She has stubby fingernails because she has a nervous habit of biting them. And there’s your very detailed description.” Stephenie Mayer

school before Bella arrived, and according to our noble heroine was ‘standoffish’ with her. Later Lauren gets duped by a fake model agent to the tune of fifteen thousand dollars and has a boyishly short haircut as her reward. All because she was one of the few that did not fawn over Bella on sight (another is Leah Clearwater, but more on that later).

Edward Cullen: The Brooding Sparkling Stalker “He lay perfectly still in the grass, his shirt open over his sculpted, incandescent chest, his scintillating arms bare.” (Twilight) This is how Bella sees Edward, the second half of the pairing at the heart of these books. Even his breath is described with an otherworldly, irresistible quality. Everything about him is just, perfect. It goes on like this for the entire four book saga.

046

Later on he and Bella kiss for the first time. And her heart literally stops. This scene should have ended with Edward frantically calling the paramedics as Bella rolls on the ground suffering cardiac arrest. Seriously where does a writer go from there? What other way is left to impress the reader and show that Edward is a piece of hotness, if just a kiss causes one’s heart to stop beating? Imagine what will happen when he kisses her in other places. Personality wise Edward is primarily driven by jealousy and this colours most of his actions. By stalking her and preventing her from fraternizing with other boys he takes control of her social life. He is emotionally aloof, withholding his uncertainties, doubts and fears. He is condescending with Bella, treating her like a child who needs him to be around to protect her from everything and everyone because

without him she’d be helpless. Unfortunately, Mayer makes this true. He does protect her, swooping in all the time. Bella herself feels she cannot exist without Edward by her side. A jealous, emotionally distant, possessive and controlling man; dominating a submissive, codependent girl. The stuff romance is made of, if you’ve abandoned all sense.

Jacob Black: the Flea-Ridden Studmuffin

Out of the three, he’s the most tolerable. In the early books wolf-boy was presented as a pretty decent guy with a fondness for Bella. He presents Bella with a wooden Charm bracelet. But Edward later trumps this by buying a diamond heart shaped Charm bracelet. Since Edward ultimately gets the girl, so…umm nice guys finish last is the lesson here? Being filthy rich trumps a gift from the

heart? Girls can be bought with diamonds? Take your pick. His character is later destroyed, especially in Breaking Dawn. He sexually harasses Bella kissing her without permission. Then to add insult to injury not only does he not get Bella, Mayer pairs him with Bella’s baby daughter instead, turning him into an adult male who nurtures an infant for the purpose of someday copulating with her (aka paedophile). He is emotionally there for Bella even while she admits he has no chance. He is her doormat. He even takes care of her baby free of charge, if one forgets that his incentive is to breed with little Renesmee when she matures.

The Greatest Love Story Ever Told: Not. “He tells her he killed 40 or 50 people and uh is that you really shouldn’t… and I wanna kill you so much, every single day, every moment I’m with you. I’m desperate. She’s like, I don’t care. I love you. Well there’s definitely something wrong with her and there’s very obviously something wrong with me.” Robert Pattinson on Edward x Bella The Twilight novels present a depiction of love, romance and relationship that is fundamentally contradictory because romantic love is equated with abusive, co-dependent behaviour. Edward originally wanted to kill Bella for her blood. What a healthy way to begin their relationship. Then he declares eternal love after barely knowing her. Edward engages full on stalker-mode. By breaking into her house, going into her bedroom and watching her

sleep. Night after night for months. Breaking and entering, trespass and a whole host of other criminal acts is laudable if it’s for getting into a 17 year-old girl’s knickers. It is text book psycho behaviour that no-one sane would countenance. But in Twilight-verse this is held as a sign of attachment and affection. Edward is jealous and possessive of Bella. Keeping her away from other males as if she were his possession, or pet. Bella has no personal say in the matter. He goes further by taking out the engine of her car without permission. Because his love trumps her independence and de facto legal, moral, and ethical ownership of her own possessions. Everything she owns is now his. Also it was to prevent her from seeing Jacob. The green-eyed monster rears its ugly head again. He even threatens to kill himself if she ever leaves him. Thus holding her hostage against her will (if she were to ever think of, ending the relationship). Bella goes into a coma for a few months, then tries to commit suicide, has a death wish and hallucinates about her ex after Edward leaves in her in New Moon. I mean, dependency much? Throughout the novels, in her eyes Edward is this indescribably beautiful creature, the epitome of the male form. She obsesses over him ceaselessly (to the annoyance

050

of this reviewer) and is blind to his flaws. She marries him under duress since Edward refuses to have sex with her until she does, becomes a vampire and has no thought of college or career. By the end her world is literally all Edward. He treats her like an object, literally. In one scene in Twilight, while waiting to meet Carlisle, he physically yanks her about like a display mannequin. He also drags her along across the school parking lot to his car even when she refuses to come along. Doubtless avid fans may think young girls being dragged by their arms by a man to his car, against their will, is romantic. Ted Bundy would certainly agree. Not enough with that in Eclipse he even asks his sister Alice to kidnap her for the weekend, because Bella really doesn’t know what she wants, really.

Next Issue of Anti-Twilight: Why sparkly vampires, all-male werewolves, and child grooming are just piles of stinking FAIL The views expressed are the writer’s own. Like navels everybody has one and they all stink.

WHILE YOU WERE SLEEPING SNORING AND SLEEP APNEA

Snoring and sleep apnea is often discussed these days by patients and doctors alike. It was hardly known as an entity 20-years ago, though snoring was often dismissed as mere nuisance and a joke among relatives and friends. In recent years, much has been written and said about these two conditions, but there are often misconceptions about them. What is the difference between snoring and sleep apnea?

Snoring is the sound that is produced by an individual while asleep. Sleep apnea, on the other hand, is cessation (or pause) of breathing that could last ten seconds or more during sleep.

Can we snore and have sleep apnea at the same time?

Yes this is very often the case. When someone suddenly stops snoring, or even stops breathing, it may well be an apnea episode. However, there are many patients who do not snore, but are apneic and unaware about it. We also have people who snore so loudly that that the neighborhood is up all night, but they may not necessarily be apneic. But this is usually of a small group.

Why do we snore?

During sleep, all the muscles in our body relax. Even the muscles and structures within our throat and airway will loosen and relax accordingly. When air is pushed through the now-relaxed airways during that level of sleep, it causes vibration of the palate, tonsilar pillar and the back portion of the tongue. This vibration causes a large amount of sound, which is known as snoring.

052

How does sleep apnea occur?

There are three forms of sleep apnea: obstructive, central and mixed. The most common among the three is the obstructive sleep apnea, and it happens when the airway gets completely obstructed by the same structures that cause snoring, and sometimes even the windpipe.

There will also be some sort of loss of libido, which can also be related with other medical conditions associated with sleep apnea.

What are the dangers of sleep apnea?

The sudden indirect dangers are often related to motor vehicular accidents, which are welldocumented worldwide as drivers often fall asleep on the wheel.

The central cause of all this would be an effect over the respiratory center in the brain that fails to regulate breathing while asleep, thus causing sleep apnea. Mixed apnea is rare when there is a mixture of both obstructive and central sleep apnea.

The long-term dangers include respiratory disorders, heart failures, hypertension, uncontrollable diabetes, and other related vessel related catastrophes like strokes. It has a general effect to one’s quality of life and life expectancy.

How do we know that it’s apnea?

What can be done if you suspect apnea?

The simple signs of apnea would be excessive daytime sleepiness despite having a ‘good’ night’s sleep (which means that the patient thinks that he or she has slept well, yet still feels tired). Oftentimes, telltale signs also include unexplained morning headaches, fatigue, poor memory of recent events, and frequent irritability with occasional episodes of depression. Most of these symptoms may not have existed earlier particularly during the early years. Some may even generalize these symptoms as age related or mid life crisis, which is usually a myth.

Specialists can help you to detect apnea scientifically with gadgets called the Sleep Study machine. Before that is done, you must be able to give some vital information to the doctor like weight and height which will give a BMI [Body Mass Index], your collar size [more than USA 17”] and other information about your sleepiness during sitting, reading, watching TV, in the car, talking to people and at the traffic light.

An ENT examination would be done to see the nose and throat in which obvious obstruction would be detected.

053

auraadvertorial TEXT Datuk Dr Kuljit Singh, ENT Surgeon, Prince Court Medical Centre

“The important thing to note is that apnea must be detected and treatment has to be done to deal with it.

What is a Sleep Study?

A Sleep Study is an examination done on a patient while sleeping to monitor some important values like brain waves, heart beat and rhythm, eye movement, movement of muscles, oxygen saturation, air flow in the nose, sleep position, and blood pressure. A complete study is usually done in big hospitals, which would give detailed data, but there would also be partial studies or so-called home studies that will not include all the monitoring but will give estimates of the problem. Sometimes home studies may not be conclusive thus a complete study may have to be done.

What is detected in a Sleep Study?

Sleep studies are usually very complex and are read and interpreted by trained personals. In a complete Sleep Study report there would be many figures and values in the results. The most important value would be the apnea hypopnea index [AHI]. That value would heavily assist the treating doctor to advise you on what would be best for you. A Sleep Study will also confirm if the condition is obstructive, central or mixed.

What would be possible types of treatments once apnea is confirmed?

There are no standard treatments for apnea as it is highly depended to the patient, type of apnea that he or she is having, and the level of apnea and other medical conditions that are present. The level of obstruction can vary from one patient to another. Obstructive apnea can be treated with either non-surgical, surgical or a combination of both treatments. Non-surgical treatments would involve lifestyle modifications likes exercises, weight loss regimes and the avoidance of sedatives, alcohol, smoking, and other harmful habits.

054

Other non-surgical treatments include positional advice during sleep, nasal strips, dental appliances to pull the jaw forward or keep the tongue away from obstructing the air way. However, non-surgical treatments do not guarantee positive results.

Some patients use a breathing machine called CPAP? Does this help?

CPAP is a continuous positive airway pressure machine which is often referred to as the gold standard for apnea treatment. It provides a pneumatic splint to the airway and prevents the airway from collapsing. Some patients have difficulty adjusting to the machine because some time and patience is required to get used to it. The CPAP come in many forms, but the newer machines that are currently available are automated, produce almost no noise at all, and come in convenient sizes.

Will surgery help apnea patient?

Surgeries have been constantly modified and improved for the past ten years to treat obstructive apnea. The aim of the surgery is relieve the obstruction that causes apnea, so the correct diagnosis of the level of obstruction is important. As mentioned earlier, there is no standard surgery in treating all apnea cases. Surgery would be performed at the nasal cavity to reduce blockage in the nose, removal of the tonsils or trimming the soft palate. The other area of blockage is the tongue and various types of surgery can be done for this purpose. However the outcome and type of the surgery should be discussed with the doctor to understand the acceptable results.

What is the lasting outcome of treatment for apnea?

Very often this cannot be guessed or predicted upfront as the causes can sometimes be at various levels. The important thing to note is that apnea must be detected and treatment has to be done to deal with it. It may be a stepwise treatment, thus a quick fix may not work for all patients. It is necessary to have it managed as early as possible so that the long term complications don’t set in. The most worrying part in all this would be the accidents, that can be disastrous if this problem is not addressed early.

THE BITTERSWEET TRUTH FIND YOURSELF ON THE RECEIVING END OF A NOT SO GUILTY PLEASURE

Light and sweet or dark and bitter, our palates have a penchant for a different variety of chocolates. If you’re planning to say it with chocolates this Valentine’s Day, take a bite of both, milk and dark chocolate and balance the good and bad between the two before gifting it to that special someone. Before you even start using these excuses to empty an entire rack of chocolates at the grocer, please be informed that there’s a small catch to all these chocolate goodness. Chocolate, no matter what form they are in is still a source of calories. And just because they’re oh-so-tasty, most of us easily overindulge in them. Chocolates are not created equally. In order to savour the health benefits of chocolate, you need to know which chocolate provides nutrients and which is laid with excessive calories and sugar.

DARK OR MILKY GOODNESS

Milk chocolate may taste better compared to dark chocolate but it’s not the healthier choice. All that milky goodness contains less of the original cocoa beans than dark chocolate does. Nevertheless, milk chocolate isn’t all that bad. Since it contains milk solids, it doesn’t lack all nutrition; it’s minimal in comparison with dark chocolate because it’s often diluted with the addition of milk solids, sugar and cream.

THE HIGHER THE COCOA CONTENTS, THE HIGHER THE NUTRITION’S

The main ingredient in a bar of chocolate would be the cacao bean. The cacao bean (kah-KAYoh), not cocoa, are the seeds of the fruit of the tropical tree Theobroma cacao. The generic

056

name is derived from the Greek words (theos), meaning “god”, and (broma), meaning “food” and it literally translates to “food of the gods.” This bitter cacao bean was enjoyed as a spice by the Mayans and Aztecs. Only after it made its way to Europe was it sweetened with sugar. Cocoa is a fabulous source of flavonoids, a special class of antioxidants that are the primary reason chocolate is now considered a treat. The more cocoa, the more flavonoids, and the better for you the chocolate becomes. Plus, dark chocolate varieties often have less added sugar and fat which can also help improve its overall nutritional value. There have been many studies that found that eating dark chocolate in moderate proportions on a daily basis over a decade may lower your risk of having a heart attack or stroke. Since then, the virtues of chocolates just went on making headlines. Be sure to make your chocolate treat healthy by remembering these tips.

THE DARKER, THE BETTER: Ever noticed why these studies never utter a word about milk chocolates? To begin with, they’re not even considered chocolates. It’s just candy with

so much milk and sugar that its percentage of the real stuff, the cacao, may be as low as 10 percent. The lower the cacao, the lower the antioxidant content of your chocolate. So, always go for dark chocolate that’s at least 60 to 70 percent cocoa for those high flavonoid concentrations that actually help your health.

QUALITY MATTERS: Of course, what actually constitutes the best dark chocolate in the world is subjective; but here’s the point – good dark chocolate is self-limiting. You won’t go crazy and pig out on it because it isn’t pleasant to do so. The quality stuff always lasts longer than the cheap stuff. Quality dark chocolate is definitely worth the extra expenditure. SIZE MATTERS: Like everything else in life,

chocolate needs to be taken in moderation. Just because it’s good for you, it doesn’t mean you have an excuse to go overboard; eat too much of any “healthy” treat every day and you’ll just be undoing any possible benefits you may be getting. Stick to a square of dark chocolate a day – most people find that this is enough to satisfy their sweet cravings, and studies have shown that dark chocolate’s benefits are obtained from having just a small amount each day. Source: www.fitsugar.com

chocTrivia

• The first edible chocolate was created by Joseph Storrs in 1849. • Daniel Peter from Switzerland invented milk chocolate in 1876. • The blood in the iconic shower scene in the Alfred Hitchcock classic Psycho was actually made out of chocolate syrup. Limit yourself to no more than three ounces of chocolate per day and look for ways to incorporate it into other healthy dishes. Fresh fruit, low-fat yogurt, and high fiber cereal are just a few nutritious dishes that a sprinkle of chocolate would pair well with.

#1 RELIEF THE POWER TO PEE STANDING UP From the juvenile act of writing one’s name in the snow with pee, to the convenience of being able to pee just anywhere without having to squat or sit, there are certain liberties that come with having male genitalia that women simply couldn’t ‘enjoy’… until now. With a tagline like “Don’t take life sitting down.”, you can bet your eager bladder that the GoGirl is a ticket out of situations where one needs to squat or sit down to pee in disgusting, distant, or non-existent toilets. The idea of having dirty water, germs, or even uninvited creatures come into contact with your lady parts, is never a comforting thought, but this is a major concern for women all around the world. Without any aid, there is really no practical way for a woman to pee standing without creating a mess, and this is where GoGirl comes to save the day. GoGirl is basically a female urination device, or FUD, that allows ladies to pee standing up. It is used by holding it up against the body to form a sealed passage that will safely channel pee out at wherever it is aimed. The FUD isn’t a new invention, but the GoGirl seems to be the most hygienic one in the market. It is made with flexible, medical grade silicone, which can either be disposed after use or carefully cleaned for reuse. GoGirl even boasts its patented splash guard which they claim can eliminate messing or splashing. The flexible material makes it easy to fit into a purse, pocket, or glove compartment. This device has been used by European women for years. And while we can see how it may take time for some women to get used to the idea, there will surely be more than one time and place where one would be able to pee standing. Men should even consider keeping one handy, for you will never know when you and your female companion could save yourselves a whole lot of trouble trying to look for a suitable site for her to take a number one. www.go-girl.com

IT’S VALENTINE’S DAY;

BIG DEAL! THE SINGLES SURVIVAL GUIDE

It’s the loveliest of the holiday seasons for the lovebirds but for the singles out there, it’s the worst; for obvious reasons. As a single person myself, I sometimes wonder if Hallmark, the candy stores and the florists around town would just call off the holiday and wait until Cupid finds his way to me. Fat hopes? Literally.

There are a lot of single people out there and you’re not worse off than others simply because you’re single. Although it might get a bit depressing at times, I’ve somehow managed. I may not be a big believer in Valentine’s Day, but I’ll admit that I like love and all that mushiness that goes into it. I’ve got no issues at all. But the weird thing is that, when I mention to someone that I’ll be spending Valentine’s Day all by myself, they look at me as if I’m committing the biggest sin on earth. “It’s Valentine’s Day and you’re spending it at home alone? Are you out of your wits?” I get this a lot. Here I am thinking, it’s just a day where millions of people smother one another with gifts, women wear the sexiest lingerie, couples go out to dine at swanky diners and go home to have boring, conventional sex. I’ve got no beef with Valentine’s Day but I’m not going to let this couple driven culture define my choice as something unacceptable. The way I view it, whether you’re single or in a relationship, Valentine’s Day serves as a special day for many people in different ways. At the end of the day, it’s not your relationship status that makes the real difference in your life or on this day. Rather, it’s your ability to capitalize on any type of situation and to live with passion that delivers the true meaning. There are a lot of single people out there and you’re not worse off than others simply because you’re single. Being in a relationship might make your life better but what makes your life better or not depends entirely on the person the relationship is with. It’s in your grasp to have a happy and fulfilling life as a single. And, even if you don’t want to right now or don’t believe it will ever happen – everyone, including you, can fall in love. And it usually happens when you least expect it. So, in the meantime, here are some of the things you can do or should not do as a singleton on Valentine’s Day. Please note that ice cream binging, “boyfriend bonfires” and pity fests are not on the list. Happy Valentine’s Day! SAY “NO” TO GIRL TALKS This would apply to the single ladies out

064

there. If you’re invited for dinner by your girlfriends, decline the offer. There’s nothing more tragic than a bunch of single ladies, sitting around a table, b****ing about men, love and the one that got away. It’s equivalent to heading to the hardware store, buying a shovel and spending the rest of the evening digging yourself a grave, you cat lady! I truly understand your vulnerability because even I remember that scene in Bridget Jones’s diary with Renée Zellweger belting out “All By Myself” in her jammies; but leave aside these chicks from Bridget Jones and Sex and the City, and just about every other pathetic single female on both big and small screens because their lives are scripted! Don’t have a heart attack over it. Brave the couples walking arm-in-arm down the street because tomorrow will be just another day. Go to work, go for lunch, go for after-work drinks with your colleagues who are not going out on a date and do all the things you’d do on any given day. It’s just 24 hours and you’re going to be spending most of the day at work or in bed. If you have the time and a little extra cash in hand, pack your stuff and get away from this entire hullabaloo. You don’t need to leave the country (though it seems like the best possible option considering most countries don’t celebrate this holiday), because a trip in your own country might be just as much fun. Catch up with a few friends who are living in other states or just explore a new town. Spend most of Valentine’s Day in a car or a train and your mind will tend to ignore the obvious. SAY “NO” TO DRUNK DIALING I bet most of us clearly know the consequence of going through extreme emotional distress under the influence of alcohol. One thing leads to another and by the end of the night, you realize that you’ve had one too many and drunk texted an ex-flame, exclaiming your undying love. If you’re the type that gets intoxicated easily, get a mobile app that will keep your drunken dialling on lockdown or just skip the booze altogether.

SAY “NO” TO DESPERATION Yes it’s Valentine’s Day and I’m sure you’ve got better things to do than to stare at the phone’s blank screen. It’s not going to ring. Ever. Don’t even try sending a casual message to say “Hi!”, “Hey!” or “What’s up?” to a present or previous crush or that ex because it only says one thing; “Hi. I’m desperate!” Just cut the slack and switch off your phone for the entire night and switch it on tomorrow. It’s not the like the world is going to end anytime now. SAY “YES” TO YOURSELF The sad truth is that you do not have a significant other in your life. But the real truth is that you have yourself. Remind yourself that you’re important to yourself. Treat yourself right, do the things you love to do, go to places you love to go. Anything that gives you pleasure goes. As a rule of thumb, the more you take care of your needs, the less you feel the necessity for somebody else in your life. You may still seek that person, but without feeling a desperate requirement for them. Look at the bright side; when everyone else is spending ridiculous amount of cash on gifts that normally cost half the price the other 364 days of the year, you don’t have to worry about spending half your mortgage on gifts that won’t make it to the end of the week. I still wonder why love become so monetized and why uttering those three words have become somehow less valuable than sending a dozen roses that will wither within a week? Here’s the plan – take that cash and spend it on you. Buy that fancy gadget you’ve always wanted to own, splurge on a new wardrobe or pamper yourself with a spa treatment. It’s your day, so get out there and have all the fun you want while the other singles are all too busy crying their butts off because they’re not in – or maybe even because they’re in a relationship. Spend Valentine’s Day engrossed in your own guilty pleasures. Easier said than done you may think, but someday you will look back with fondness on the days when you were accountable to no one but yourself.

Reviving the

Dyeing Art RUBAQ BOUTIQUE @ PUBLIKA

No matter how many hipsters, K-poppers, and punks we see out there in Malaysia, there is a strong sense of pride that we Malaysians have always maintained with our own heritage. And one of the ways that we express that pride is through fashion. Through years, we have witnessed a remarkable growth in local designer wear, and it is this cherished love that Malaysians have for rich cultural dressing that has encouraged the brands to grow. With that being said, it’s easy to see why there has always been an obsession amongst Malaysians with the famed ‘batik’. This age-old art is one that still remains relevant today in the Malay culture. Its appeal is undeniable, and is a popular outfit of choice for both men and women during formal occasions, and even special occasions such as wedding and festivals. In today’s world, where style travels faster than jet planes, Rubaq has established itself as the destination for wearable art, featuring the perfect blend of sophistication, stylish fashion and class. A name that literally translates to ‘the house of batik’, Rubaq brings fashion that is trendy and versatile. And it’s hardly a surprise to find that the designers behind the entire shebang is a mother and daughter team - Assoc Prof Zaharah Ahmad Osman and her daughter Shazmin Kushairi. Rubaq brings the goodness of centuries’ worth of craftsmanship by reviving paint-on batik techniques that are all done exclusively by Zaharah herself. With her eye for fashion, artistic talents and immaculate attention to detail, she produces stellar examples of the same superlative attributes of the craft at its best. Established a year ago, the hand painted batik products at Rubaq are done with the urban woman and her lifestyle in mind. While browsing the store at Publika, my eyes were spoilt for choice; with every piece exuding a strong sense of elegance and original style, the collection just begged to be noticed. Attractive garments are the only eye candy in the store, for there is also a fine selection of bespoke accoutrements to check out. One which caught our attention was a distinctive looking neckpiece created by intertwining loops and hoops, a piece that really got me wondering where the designers get their inspiration from. At a boutique like Rubaq, you are exposed to a large selection of ethnic wear that symbolizes the ethnicity in its purest form. Housing a lovely collection of ready-to-wear outfits, materials, the semi stitched and stitched readymade garments with the most exuberant batik prints can be altered into traditional cuts or designer-esque forms. To keep things trendy, the store also features quirky handmade neckpieces that were hand-made in Barcelona. Showcasing a delightful juxtaposition of ethnic heritage against contemporary designs at her new store, Rubaq’s boutique is a simple space that is big on the style quotient, reflecting the brand’s refined taste, creativity and understated elegance.

ROLLING THE DICE WITH THE CHRISTOPHE CLARET 21 BlackJack 080

Christophe Claret is no stranger to the world of luxury watchmaking. Regarded by peers and fans as one of the few that stand at the pinnacle of the horological arts, his pieces are always of immaculate craftsmanship adorned with precision micro engineering - to bring a dazzling array of complications to the fore.

Once again the maestro of horology outdoes expectations by presenting the stunning yet playful 21 Blackjack Watch, a delectable fusion of Christophe Claret sophistication with the thrill of the casino table. This isn’t just a watch. It’s a sweet little slice of Monte Carlo small enough to fit on your wrist. The 21 Blackjack comes complete with three games Blackjack, roulette and a dice game. The attention to detail will certainly delight avid punters. The Blackjack game is played between the watch as the dealer, and you. Cards are randomly drawn to simulate the unpredictability and risk. Each time a card is drawn a chime rings. What first strikes you is the variation on the dial. There are at least three dial designs to choose from. There’s the simple plain black onyx plate. Then there’s the tinted grey sapphire plated adorned with playing card motifs. Especially appealing to Asian collectors would be the third option where the tinted grey sapphire plate is adorned with a tiger instead.

There are seven windows between 3 and 9 o’clock and are the player windows. On the upper part of the dial are the three dealer windows. We love the little things. Like how the hands are large, black PVC with synthetic ruby highlights; making them stand out on the black or grey sapphire dial face. For the Gold edition, the hands are lined with orange sapphire instead. The case is 45mm making it feel solid and durable indeed. Look at the underside of the watch. There’s your roulette table. It spins in synch with the movement of the hand. The lucky number slot is a small emerald. The straps are black alligator completing the casino allusion. The dice game is in a small sapphire crystal compartment located on the right side of the watch. Be awed at the intricate detail on such minuteness. Just shake it and pray for six. This marvel of timekeeping intricacy is powered by a self-winding BLJ08 calibre

movement, consisting of 501 individual parts. It incorporates twin barrels. Adorned with 40 jewels, the movement operates at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour and offers a 72hour power reserve. A cutting edge example of haute horology and hedonism, that is well beyond a magazine writer’s salary. The only money anyone will lose here is by paying the whopping price tag. The Christophe Claret 21 BlackJack is available in Grade 5 grey titanium, grade 5 black PVD titanium, platinum and grade 5 black PVD titanium, pink gold and grade 5 black PVD titanium, white gold and grade 5 black PVD titanium. Each version will be limited to a maximum of 21 pieces. Price will be between $178,000 and $210,000 depending on configuration. For more information: www.christopheclaret.com

camel active launches its new “Roadside” concept store

Dec 21 2012 was a momentous date on camel active’s calendar, because it was the day that the first camel active store in Malaysia opened with the new “Roadside” shopfitting concept.

086

Located in the Alamanda Putrajaya, the new “Roadside” concept store breathes a fresh yet uncanny sense of life into the cold, ‘futuristic’ quarters of the mall. With rustic charm and adventurous appeal hammered into every inch of the 1143 sq ft store, customers are transported into the camel active campaign world the moment they step in. This is the second “Roadside Concept” to roll out in Asia, so it’s a rather exciting treat for consumers in Malaysia. Once again, the familiar trailblazing trio who have been portraying the lifestyle brand’s image campaigns makes a prominent appearance. camel active has expressed its edge with the worldwide adventures for the past few years, presenting a bold and rugged zest that continues to inspire its original style. From the American Airsteam trailer-inspired cash register module, to the surfing beach cabin themed changing rooms, the “Roadside” shopfitting concept is inspired by the materials and motifs found during the trio’s trips around the globe.

In this sense of shop décor, camel active even went to the extent of simulating the aesthetic feel of a bus stop in Mumbai at their footwear section, so customers can try shoes on while sitting on retro-style plastic seats under corrugated sheet metal roof. “Materials with patina and structure convey a story. Haptics are very important for us. The impressions from foreign countries give the new shopfittings as well as the display window decorations authenticity. Those passing a camel active store such as the one in Putrajaya today will discover large-scale motifs from the current campaign. The travel theme is our absolute USP which we will be passionately pursuing in the future as well,” says camel active Head of Retail Mark Schäfer on the launch of the Roadside concept. In Asia, the first Roadside concept store was launched in Bangkok’s newest shopping mall, Mega Bangna in July 2012. The Alamanda Putrajaya Store is the first “Roadside Concept” roll out in Malaysia and the second in Asia.

celebrities and their

Signature Fragrances are a big – and growing business; it’s an even more lucrative one when celebrities lend their names to it. When stars bottle up their signature scents to share with the world, they come with built-in fan bases; those that will buy the perfume regardless of how good or bad the whiff is. Nevertheless, some of these scents are definitely questionable, some are sweet, and some are most likely on the cosmetic counter just to keep up with the celebrity branding trend. Love them or loathe them, the star or the scent, these fragrances are the sweet smell of success.

FAME BY LADY GAGA

The dramatic looking black liquid, the black and gold bottle featuring gilded monster claws and the notes of blood and semen makes Fame by Lady Gaga one slightly creepy perfume. But as intimidating as the black is, this first-ever black perfume turns clear once spritzed; and that mention about semen and other not so delightful body fluids were just probably rumours because Fame doesn’t smell anything like that. In real fact, it smells sophisticated, floral and sexy, something you wouldn’t have expected from Gaga at all. Fame doesn’t have the traditional top, middle and base note. The notes come out all together at once. NOTES: Belladonna, Incense, Honey, Saffron, Apricot nectar, Tiger Orchid, Jasmine Sambac

TRUTH OR DARE BY MADONNA

Like the ‘Material Girl’ herself, Truth or Dare is utterly robust. The scent is heavily floral right from the outset but with the addition of woods and vanilla, the fragrance stands out from the traditional floral scents. A scent that is timeless yet modern, it embodies the dual forces that coexist in all of us – darkness and light, purity and deceitfulness. TOP NOTES – Gardenia, Tuberose, Neroli MIDDLE NOTES – Jasmine, Benzoin, White Lily BOTTOM NOTES – Vanilla, Amber, Musk

088

GLAM BY KIM KARDASHIAN

If you haven’t been keeping up with the Kardhashians, we’d like to inform you that Glam is the fifth release in her line-up of fragrances. A sexy party spritz, Glam depicts the allure of Kim Kardashian’s glitzy and glamorous celebrity status. TOP NOTES – Watermelon, Citrus Notes, Berries MIDDLE NOTES – Star Jasmine, Tuberose, Rose BOTTOM NOTES – Musk, Orris Root, Sandalwood

UNFORGIVABLE BLACK BY SEAN JOHN

Unforgivable, the fragrance from a man known by a variety of nicknames was one impressive debut. A sexy and suave scent, Unforgivable Black captures the vigour of Sean Combs as an artist as well as a determined entrepreneur. With a stimulating blend of exotic ingredients such as Italian bergamot, Sicilian lemon and Cashmere wood, Unforgiveable Black by Sean John is for men who live with a burning desire for the finer things in life. TOP NOTES – Green Mandarin, Lavender, Tangerine, Pear, Bergamot, Grapefruit, Sicilian Lemon, Cardamom MIDDLE NOTES – Rosemary, Iris, Basil, Clary Sage BOTTOM NOTES – Tonka Bean, Amber, Coconut Rum, Sandalwood, Cashmere Wood

THE ESSENCE BY DAVID BECKHAM

AVON UNSCRIPTED II BY PATRICK DEMPSEY It’s not like women love to go around sniffing other men but there’s definitely a long line of women who would love to get a whiff of Patrick Dempsey. Though that would be impossible, the next best thing would be to douse your better half in Eau de McDreamy! Unscripted II, Dempsey’s second signature cologne in partnership with Avon had Dempsey himself working on the development – from the concept, name and scent notes, even up to its packaging. TOP NOTES – Saffron, Nutmeg, Mandarin Orange MIDDLE NOTES – French Labdanum, Fig, Woodsy Notes BOTTOM NOTES – Musk Patchouli, Guaiac Wood, Olibanum

With a vibrantly sexy scent that oozes masculinity, this is a fragrance that’s to be worn with confidence. The Essence is zesty, fresh and reveals a strong charisma, the perfect expression of David’s laidback persona. Envision a bloke wearing this scent during hot summer days and the first tune that plays in your mind would probably be ‘It’s raining men’; although you probably need more than a hailstorm to soothe sensation that’s burning up inside you. TOP NOTES – Grapefruit, Lavender, Violet Leaf MIDDLE NOTES – Apple, Pineapple, Cardamom BOTTOM NOTES – Tonka Bean, Patchouli, Cashmere Woods

USHER VIP BY USHER

Suitable to be worn when you’re out in town or when you’re spending some sexy time with that special someone, Usher VIP is wearable 24/7, 365 days in a year. A scent that represents strength and sexiness, this fresh, woody, musk scent celebrates the gentleman inside of every man. A PIECE OF HAVEN ON EARTH A SPELDOROUS LAKESIDE RESIDENCE IN IPOH

Luxury condominiums are the way of the future for the large generation who will be moving on to retirement in the not so distant future. Nevertheless, these condos also cater to those who are keen on streamlining their lives and for those who seek rejuvenation from the hustle and bustle of city life. As a ‘KL-ite’, I’ve personally seen many condos being constructed at nearly every corner the city. For a city dweller like me, these condos that are set amidst the buzzing city life cater towards the lifestyles of those from the younger generations, like me; but what about those that are yearning for an escape from all this chaos? One address clearly stands above the rest. As the name suggests, it’s an ideal residential area for anyone who is in search of comfort and solitude. An exclusive apartment that is crafted to meet your every need, The Haven Lakeside Residences is the epitome of ethereal serenity. Although oceanfront or beachfront properties usually make the cut when it comes to a providing for an astounding view, The Haven offers something that’s more of a sight for sore eyes.

Nestled amongst the lush greenery of Bukit Tambun, a home at The Haven is effortlessly luxurious, quietly elegant and several cuts above the rest around the vicinity of Ipoh. Look around and you will be greeted by the beauty of its virgin surroundings. From serene landscapes, to lush hills, and a sprawling, tranquil lake with a 280 million year-old gigantic rock sitting on it, it would be hard not to instantly fall in love with the place. Developed by Superboom Projects Sdn Bhd, and with building and construction works taken over by Bina Puri and Beijing Construction and Engineering, The Haven is more than just a fine-looking place as it caters to the needs of prospect buyers, tenants and also investors who are on the look for unique

real estate investment opportunities that await them in a quaint town like Ipoh. According to the Chief Executive Officer of Superboom Projects Sdn Bhd, Peter Chan, he is very enthralled with the good reception The Haven has garnered in the past year. “It’s an investment with a class of its own in Ipoh, one that leaves you spoiled for choice. And it’s no surprise that it has raised to fame in such a short time span.” “The temptation of owning a property at The Haven is very hard to resist. The breathtaking view that surrounds you is one major aspect, but convenience is also another: when you’re missing out on the city life that you’ve probably been used to, all you have to do is to step out of your home

and take a short drive to the town of Ipoh which is just a stone’s throw away,” he added. It’s a world class residence, a stunning property that is very much sought after by those who don’t just value tranquil and serene surroundings but also the exclusiveness of an ultra-modern property that is equipped with comprehensive facilities. The Haven stands to reason that your condominium should match your status, if not exceed it. With its completion just around the corner, it would be worth noting that The Haven consist of three condo towers with a total of 497 condo units – each tower is 26 storeys high and the unit built-up ranges from 968sq ft. to 5,350sq ft. and comes with a price tag that ranges from RM389,500 onwards. The penthouses on the other hand are priced between RM1.27 million to RM2.86 million and there are only 15 of them. Occupying a mere 30,000sq ft. of land, the rest of the

area houses recreational facilities such as a swimming pool and a jogging track, car park space and landscaped grounds. The project is also quickly earning quite a reputation in the local arena as well as in the International scene by bagging 4 awards – Best Resort Condominium and Best Perak Development at the SC Cheah Choice Awards 2011, New Straits Times Property, the International Arch of Europe Award 2011 (Frankfurt) for Quantity and Innovation and The Diamond Eye Award 2011 (Geneva) for Quantity and Excellence. With this many accolades under its name, there must be more to The Haven. From being the first five-star condo cum hotel in Malaysia, to the first to feature digital animation in its marketing efforts and the first eco-condo project by the virgin forest, this property is showcases the many ‘firsts’ in Malaysia and in Perak.

With an aim to satisfy your specialised requests and desires, the resort-style living here is further enhanced with a diversified offer of interesting and exclusive facilities. To start with, there’s an infinity swimming pool that was designed by the renowned Consultant Urban Design Group together with builder Mega Hydro System Sdn Bhd. Though it’s evident that even an ordinary condominium features a swimming pool, this one’s a little extra special; it offers heated water for those who are planning to go for a dip late in the evening. This is further proof that condo living just spoils a person for any

other type of lifestyle. And then there’s the added luxury of a gymnasium, landscaped gardens and waterways, a designated barbecue patio and a children’s playground. A variety of “green” features and technologies have also been incorporated into the building in order to reduce carbon footprint. Some notable features include renewable energy sources of wind, water and sun, the usage of eco-friendly building materials, invertertype air-conditioning, and LED lighting in common areas. Looking to enhance the vast facilities that are already made available to the

residents, The Haven is also set to incorporate a private bus shuttle facility to commute residents to the city centre. The comfort and convenience aside, The Haven is also protected with top notch security features such as guarded entrances, card access to residential floors, concierge service, foot patrol that goes on regular rounds, CCTV system and fencing. The modern luxurious feel continues with the interior. To further enhance the facilities, Best Western International, one of the world’s

largest hotel chains has stepped in to provide professional services to market and lease out The Haven Lakeside Residences. According to Chan, “Property owners at The Haven can lease out their units. The contract will be between the owner and Best Western Hotels.” Buyers are also guaranteed a 6% annual return for the first three years and 7% for a further two years based on lease agreements. The outlook for The Haven is definitely positive and this gives buyers and owners the confidence in future capital gains in one-way or the other.

When asked about the future residents of The Haven, Chan explained that they will mostly consist of people who are seeking for a vacation home or a retirement home. “There are a huge number who are going to be fulltime residents as well. There is also a good mix of residents of different nationalities; we have buyers from the United States, Europe, the Middle East, Hong Kong, Thailand and Indonesia to name a few”. The developers are still constantly working hard to expand the project’s value in other areas, as well as to supply to the growing

IN THE SPOTLIGHT BAXTER LAYS THE MOOD BACK

There is no denying that the star of this set which steals the spotlight here is the same one that produces one. Yet, as we shift our gaze to the rest of the picture, we are presented with a nifty concept by Baxter that tempts us to inspect further. Pixar has done an amazing job in bringing a lifeless table lamp to life by giving it body language. In fact, Pixar has done such a great job that it would be hard not to imagine this gigantic floor lamp hopping around the room. This larger than life table lamp is none other than Baxter’s iconic Great JJ Floor Lamp. The Alfred Special Edition Trench Sofa is the next thing that catches the eye even though it is trenched in the far back. This special edition of the classic Alfred couch takes the form of an ironic tongue-in-cheek destroyed interpretation of the classic gentlemen’s couch. It was made to look ‘destroyed’ and recycled, but is actually luxurious.

112

Right in the front is Table Au, which is a collection of small to medium coffee and side tables that are made of glossy/ matt resin with iron bases. The tops are hand-painted with interesting and sometimes provocative words. If you’d like to, you can even include your own choice of words for a truly one-of-a-kind piece. Unassuming yet luxurious, this rebellion against the more blatant expression of opulence is surprisingly fresh, and will appeal to those who appreciate such art. www.baxter.it

DEEPER SLEEPER THE LUCSIOUS ENTRANCE TO DREAMLAND

With one third of our lives spent sleeping in it, and a memorable part of it indulging in good and bad romance, the bedroom remains one of the most sacred parts of the house next to the kitchen.

For the past three decades, Paola Navone has established a refreshing stand in the male dominated Italian design elite. Renowned for her active role in avant-garde design movements in the 80’s and a long list of other achievements, she has designed well over 200 premium products for over 12 manufacturers. Her vast experience in furniture design has led to the production of this exquisite bedroom set. Wrapped in the most exquisite leathers that come in any range and color of your choice, the Paris Bed is designed especially for those whose lives revolve around the bedroom. The

cushioned headrest provides for ample comfort and support as you lie back to read or eat in bed. The colors chosen in this picture is close to Paola’s heart as she pushed for an all blue setting for a long time before Baxter agreed to it. Like little sheep, the Nepal Little Armchairs sport a playful yet cozy presence in the bedroom. Made from wool and available in blue or white, these balls of wool are bound to add a little fun into your life. The rest of our four legged friends in this room come in the form of a bedside table named Cairo which

is made of hand chased tinplated copper so that you can slam that snooze button down in style. Then there Bidu, the console table, featuring solid cedar legs, stained aniline black with a painted steel tubular frame. Paola Navone has always pursued the unique and unusual and will not confine herself within a particular niche or style. Combined with her preference for colors and light that provide warmth, this bed set is just one of many examples of just how brilliant she is. www.baxter.it

SOUND STYLE

THE YAMAHA ISX-800 RESTIO IS EASY ON THE EYES AND EARS

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen aesthetically outstanding ‘designer speakers’ that serve as functional décor, but this would be the first time that we don’t have to make a compromise between good looks and good sound quality.

While Yamaha has its fair share of grungy and ‘old-skool’ speaker designs on its list, the Restio appears to be one of its latest efforts to cater towards the sleek and contemporary designs of the modern home. And unlike the myriad of loud, and sometimes obnoxious, designs that can be found in the market, the Restio maintains a strong character of its own through a subtle and versatile appearance.

The head unit itself is only about 9cm thick and is mounted on a half-moon base. The design of the base is such that it allows you to place it as closely to the wall as possible. A circular base can also be added to the stand for extra stability if you’d like to place the Restio away from the wall. Or if you would prefer, you also have the option of doing away with the stand altogether and mounting its 12kg head unit to the wall.

Restio weight and size is well-hidden, and is designed to seamlessly blend in and complement its surroundings. It features a square-shaped head unit which comes in four colors, each with a matching alphanumeric display in the middle, to complement a wide range of environments. The large display looks great when turned on, and is easy to read from across the room. And though you can control it with a remote control that comes with the system, all the controls can also be executed at the console itself. So you won’t be left helpless if you lose the remote.

Head-turning aesthetics aside, the Restio is also equipped with equally satisfying and versatile audio capabilities. Despite its slim and compact proportions, the Restio’s dual 10cm woofers and dual 3cm softdome tweeters are able to produce quality sound with powerful, premium bass tones.

116

Versatility comes in the form of its ample list of input options, sporting an iPhone/iPod dock, 3.5mm STEREO mini Jack, CD player, AM/FM tuner, and even a USB slot that plays audio files straight from the stick.

For those who have trouble waking up to the mouse-like volume found on most smartphones today, the Restio also serves as a clock with an alarm capable of waking you and your neighbours up. Of course, it was designed to not give you a rude shock. Instead, it plays your programmed music source without the high frequencies to gently wake you up, and gradually deploys the rest of the frequencies to get you moving. The last step of the alarm is a beeping that goes for the kill. Priced at RM2990, the Yamaha ISX-800 Restio is a nifty and impressive piece of audio equipment and decoration piece that sets itself apart from the rest with its well-balanced combination of aesthetic appeal, functionality, and sound quality. It would appear that as our phones and laptops get slimmer and more powerful, so do our home speakers. For more information, visit my.yamaha.com

3D PRINTERS MAKING EVERYTHING FROM TOYS TO ASSAULT RIFLES

The term ‘printing’ used to denote 2D applications on flat surfaces, but that line of definition is about to be blurred. By enabling anyone to print a plastic version of any solid object, these technological marvels are set to unlock a whole new level of creativity, convenience, and safety concerns. 3D printing, also known as additive manufacturing, is a process of creating three dimensional physical objects with data from a digital model. Basically, a 3D printer will analyse data from a digital 3D model, and then lay down successive layers of material to create a physical object from the bottom up. This technology has been around since the 1980’s, but up until the past few years, it was only used as a big and expensive industrial machine to create prototypes and to do research. Things are about to change around here. Today, there already several companies like Makerbot, Mojo, Objet, and Cubify, which have been commercially producing relatively cheaper and more user-friendly models. Since then,

118

we’ve seen everyday people ‘print’ everything from toys to deadly assault rifles that could fire live rounds. And in case you are wondering, it is possible to simply download the blueprints of a gun to produce a functional plastic replica, but getting it to work properly would require the right materials, a good deal of know-how, and the intention of going to jail if you’re in Malaysia. Aside from toys and tools, there are tons of other fascinating creations that have been made possible thanks to 3D printing. Some fashion designers have already created 3D printed apparels like shoes and dresses. On the more scientific side of the spectrum, people like Gaël Langevin have even created a 3D printed robot which he shares on the net as a downloadable digital 3D model for free.

Unlike laser jet printers that print digital pictures and documents onto paper, a 3D printer requires instructions from a digital 3D model. These digital 3D models can be constructed with sophisticated scanners that can draw out an entire blue print of an object just by scanning it, or they can be manually designed from scratch on a computer. For those who are unfamiliar with 3D modelling, pre-designed digital 3D models can also be downloaded for free or purchased online. The fastest printers in the market today could produce sizable physical 3D models within a few hours, which may seem like a really long time. But considering the fact that most 3D printers in the market can easily take days to complete the same job, a few hours is a relatively short time. And since you probably will not be spending

tens of thousands of ringgit on a 3D printer for your home, be prepared to exercise a whole lot of patience with an affordable entry-level printer. The most basic 3D printers out there, such as the Cubify Cube, have relatively limited capabilities compared to their industrial counterparts. You’d still be able to print an infinite number of creations within a 140mm x 140mm x 140mm limit in one of several colors available with one material at a time, but do not expect to be able to print life-sized electric guitars or multimaterial pieces with it. If you still want to print something bigger like a guitar, or multi-colored objects that the Cube cannot produce, Cubify offers what they call ‘Cloud Printing’ services where they will print and mail you anything

that is beyond the Cube’s capabilities. This may defeat the purpose of purchasing a 3D printer, but companies like Cubify do offer an impressive range of highly customizable digitally printed products that they can make for you. Still, at USD 1399, the Cubify Cube remains one of the most ‘affordable’ consumer 3D printers out there, although we strongly feel that the Markerbot Replicator 2 seen on the first page of this article would be worth the extra few hundred dollars more if you want to make more than a few miniature pieces. It may be an expensive hobby for now, but 3D printing is here to stay. So keep an eye on it, for like the 2D printing and DVD burning, 3D printing may just grow with us and eventually become a significant part of our daily lives.

“It may be an expensive hobby for now, but 3D printing is here to stay.”

3D RECORDING BINOCULARS STALKING FROM AFAR JUST GOT SERIOUS

The bulk of today’s manufacturers are all about making the smallest, slimmest, and most pretentious products, but Sony has provided us with an actual breakthrough – the world’s first binoculars with HD video recording. 128

“ADDING TO ITS LIST OF ‘WORLD’S FIRSTS’, SONY ALSO PROUDLY STATES IN ITS WEBSITE THAT THESE BINOCULARS ARE THE ONLY ONES TO OFFER CONTINUAL AUTOFOCUS WHILE ZOOMING, ALLOWING YOU TO ZERO IN WITHOUT LOSING TRACK OF FARAWAY SUBJECTS.”

Released towards the end of last year, the Sony DEV-3 and DEV-5 were touted by the company to be the world’s first binoculars to capture full HD 1920 x 1080 resolution video in 2D or 3D. Both models sport a pair of dual zoom lenses each, with up to 10x and 20x zoom capabilities for the DEV-3 and DEV-5 respectively. As an added feature, they are also able to capture stunning 7.1mp stills. Adding to its list of ‘world’s firsts’, Sony also proudly states in its website that these binoculars are the only ones to offer continual autofocus while zooming, allowing you to zero in without losing track of faraway subjects. So whether you just want to observe through the dual digital viewfinders or record videos, you can do it with the added comfort of dramatically enhanced smoothness. The secret behind the Sony’s digital recording binoculars are professional quality G lenses that boast an aperture of F: 1.8 – 3.4 across the board and an impressive 60mm to 660mm optical focal length in 2D movie mode for the DEV-5. Don’t expect 3D recording to stretch as far though, as the focal length for 3D recording is naturally best captured within the wide angle range, and in this case it focuses between 34.4mm – 344mm (10x). By working with a powerful ¼” back illuminated “Exmor R” CMOS Sensor, the device is able to deliver crisp HD videos from remarkable distances.

At 2.6 pounds, the device looks like WALL-E’s head from the Pixar movie, especially because of the way the dual G lenses ‘stares’ out from its somewhat flattened form. No matter how much of a pro you are, anyone who has ever shot a video in full zoom without a tripod will understand just shaking can be a real pain in the rear. This is where Sony’s Optical SteadyShot image stabilization with Active Mode kicks in to compensate for camera shake. And it does a damn good job of it. Other features worth mentioning are its inbuilt GPS which allows you to save the exact location from which the data was recorded, which makes a pretty valuable feature especially when shooting for scientific purposes. Sound is recorded via a built in microphone in 2 Channel Stereo Dolby Digital. If the built-in microphone or viewfinders do not satisfy your needs, a general-purpose shoe allows you to attach your choice of either a directional microphone or an LCD display on it. These add-ons can communicate with the device when connected to it via a selection of a HDMI port and a mini jack at the side of the device. Ultimately, despite all the goodness that we have salivated over throughout this article, the fact remains that the Sony DEV-3 and DEV-5 do not replace the conventional video camera when it comes to shooting movies or even documentaries. But these babies are easily some of the best highly-portable devices to capture events with from great distances. We don’t need to know what you would do with such amazing technology as Sony’s latest digital recording binoculars in your hands, but we’re cool with it just as long as you don’t use it on us or our women. The word ‘stalking’ in this article’s tagline refers to the act of observing birds and wildlife from a safe distance, of course. Now then, run along and get a pair for “birdwatching”, “sporting events”, or “wildlife filming”.

EASY CHEESY LASAGNA Think Garfield and the first thing that comes to mind is the lasagna! Yes, the ever-so-Mondayhating-fat-cat loved lasagna more than anything. Like the cat, most of us also have a thing for this Italian favorite. Though it looks like an ordinary broiled mass of cheese, pasta, meat and tomato sauce, it’s a classic that no one can ever resist.

BEEF LASAGNA:

Here’s a classic Italian lasagna dish presented with detailed ingredients and the right methods. If you wish, you can always add vegetables or a meat of choice. It’s a perfect dinner party food, so go ahead and entice your guests. Ingredients for 8 portions: - Lasagna pasta 500 gr - Parmigiano reggiano 200 gr - Mozzarella cheese 300 gr - Bechamel 1 Kg (Butter 100 gr, flour 100 gr, milk 1 liter, salt) - Beef stock 250 ml - Butter 50 gr - Minced beef 500 gr - Carrot 1 - Onion 1 - Milk 1 glass - Extra virgin olive oil 4 spoon - Pepper - Tomato sauce 250 ml - Salt - Celery

134

Preparation: Prepare beef stock and keep it aside. Chop onion, carrot, celery and fry slightly in a pan with oil and butter. Add tomato sauce, some of the beef stock, salt and pepper, and minced beef and let it cook for 2 hours at least. Slowly add the remaining beef stock and the milk at the end. In the meanwhile, prepare the Bechamel sauce; let the butter melt in a pan, add flour slowly, cook for few minutes mixing continuously. Remove from fire and add hot milk. Bring your pan back to the stove, add salt, then cover and allow the sauce to cook for 15 minutes under low fire. When your minced beef in tomato sauce is ready, preheat the oven at 160° and start to “assemble” your lasagna. Butter the bottom of your baking tin, lay the minced beef and chopped Mozzarella and cover with one layer of lasagna pasta, one layer of Bechamel sauce, add Parmesan cheese on top. Cover everything with another lasagna pasta. Proceed in the same way until the last layer. The last layer should be covered with Bechamel sauce and Parmesan cheese. Bake in the oven for 50 minutes. Level: Medium Preparation time: 20 minutes

CAKE IT BABY SUGARY SURPRISES AT BABYCAKES SWEET SHOPPE Sporting attractive appearances and prepared in a vast selection of delicious flavors, macarons may just make it as the next ‘it’ thing. Being a delicate dessert that’s difficult to make and easy to ruin, it can only take an elite breed of macaron makers to daringly try their hands on these delicate French confectionery; and Nicole from Babycakes Sweet Shoppe is definitely one of them. 136

“In order to grab some attention, we needed something different. That’s how macarons were born.”

In early 2010, as yet another sure sign of the apotheosis of the classic French treat, Babycakes made its debut at GTower Hotel in the heart of Kuala Lumpur with their own version of the candy-colored French sandwich cookie – minus the trapped air bubbles and with the right amount of filling and sweetness. Available in a cavalcade of colors and flavors, Babycakes offers traditional flavors such as chocolate, vanilla, caramel and strawberry, as well as other funky flavors such as red velvet, passion fruit, and even Bandung! We recently caught up with owner and macaron enthusiast Nicole Lynn to find out more about her kaleidoscopic offerings. When asked about the inspiration behind Babycakes, Nicole stated that before she started Babycakes, she was a full time makeup artist and a wardrobe stylist but was able to bake at night. “I’d give the baked goodies to friends but mostly to the finance department of companies that owes me money for the freelance work I did. The sweeties were a bribe to get my payment out fast, which worked!” said Nicole. When her sister decided to open a flower shop, she offered Nicole a spot to sell her baked goods. Business literally bloomed overnight, so Nicole had to cut down on her makeup and styling projects; but she still does it from time to time since it helps her be creative in a different light. Although the initial plans were to sell cupcakes and cookies, Nicole thought it was mundane. “In order to grab some attention, we needed something different. That’s how macarons were born. I didn’t know a single thing about it but luckily we had a friend who was a professional baker and he spent 3 months teaching me day and night on how to master it. I made about 600 before I got the first one right. Also, I had a tiny oven that could only bake 20 at a time so there were days I really wanted to give up.” But all that hard work paid off. Recently, her best friend since the age of seven, Sharon has joined Nicole at Babycakes and they’ve been even creating beautiful wedding cakes.

Nicole Lynn Babycakes Owner

So what sets Babycakes macarons apart from other macarons out there? “We don’t compromise on the quality of our ingredients. I always feel the goods that we bake have a homely look and feel to it. I’m not a 5 star baker – I started from home and I think that taste of homemade shows through in the food we do. I also have cute and sexy names for the macarons that our customers find amusing. Sometimes when I run out of ideas, I ask my customers for suggestions and give them a box of macarons for their creativity. My favourite line was when one of them walked to the store, ordered Mango (Ménage a Mango) and asked “Do I have to buy three?”” “We don’t carry everything every day; we rotate them on a weekly basis. We also come up with new ones during festive seasons. For the last Raya, we had Pandan and Bandung. They did so well that we now continue to sell them at the store. My personal favourite is Coconut and Green Tea.” Although this macaron heaven offers 25 flavors and more, there’s a few that sell-out like hot cakes. “Our best sellers from the first day we’ve opened are Caramel Sutra (because it really is orgasmic), Red Velvet and Chocolate Daddy. Our caramel ganache has a hint of saltiness that cuts the sweetness of the sugar. We also use butter and fresh cream in it. It takes me 45 minutes of non-stop stirring over a stove just to get a small bowl of caramel. Red Velvet is rich and thick and has a dollop of Nutella in the middle. Chocolate Daddy is our dark chocolate macaron. I was such a big fan of Puff Daddy when I was a teenager so he inspired the name for it.”

With such a creative twist to its flavors and names, there must be something that fuels Nicole’s creativity for such unique flavour combinations. “Besides baking, I also love to cook. When I come across a new spice or fruit, I tend to wonder if I can turn it into a macaron.” “I also love meeting new people from all over the world and asking them what’s the most popular spice or flavor in their country. When I have the day off, I like to just walk in a market or down a street to get some inspiration. It could be a new color that I see on a dress or a new ice cream flavour.” Sitting at this dainty little corner at GTower Hotel, the tantalizing colors captured my attention. I was suddenly reminded of cupcakes for some reason. Is it possible that the macaron is soon going to rule the market of portable deliciousness once dominated by the cupcake, I asked Nicole. “I think macarons are a craze right now because it’s not very common to find like a cake. But I don’t think they’ve taken over the cupcakes novelty. I think they’re sharing the spotlight. Macarons have been around for a long time. I personally think it was Gossip Girl that started the fashion as a few seasons ago; one of the characters was seen gorging on macarons during a breakup.” I’ve tasted a fair share of macarons in the past year and I must say that Babycakes Sweet Shoppe is the place that offers the real deal. If you can’t fly to Paris to get a bite out of this Parisian treat, then you are in luck because you’ve got Babycakes in Kuala Lumpur doing justice to this delightful confectionery.

SPARKING A ‘CORKY’ CONVERSATION TIPS, TRIVIA AND A BOTTLE OF CHAMPAGNE Although beer might seem like your best company on any given day, champagne is the drink of choice for a special occasion. Be it getting hitched, a graduation, getting a pay rise or being promoted at work, there is no better way than to celebrate with a wonderful bottle of champagne. Whether you’re dining at a fancy restaurant or sitting at home watching the sappiest love stories on TV, go for something different on a special occasion like Valentine’s Day. The standard nonfizzy wine just won’t cut it. If you’re not au fait with the different types of champagne, read up on it because picking a bottle of champagne can be tricky. And please, have a bit of class. Drinking champagne out of an Ikea goblet doesn’t quite fit the bill. Here are some tips and trivia on this lovely bubbly stuff.

THE SPARKLING TRIVIA

• Despite the historical fact that champagne has no single inventor, this has not stopped the common mythology evolving that Dom Perignon invented the drink. • Most champagne are blends of three grapes – pinot noir, pinot meunier and chardonnay, but blanc de blancs are made solely of chardonnay. • The name ‘champagne’ can only be used if the wine is produced in Champagne located in the north-eastern region of France. If a similar sparkling wine is produced, using the same method other than in Champagne, then it has to be labelled as ‘Méthode Champenoise’ so as to give credit to the procedure.

• The fictional character Agent 007 a.k.a James Bond drinks champagne more than any other beverage in the movies. • Hollywood legend Marilyn Monroe once took a bath in champagne. Up to 350 bottles of champagne were used to fill the bath tub. • The classic shallow bowl-shaped champagne coupe was believed to have been modelled in the shape of Marie Antoinette’s (the wife of Louis XVI of France) left breast. • A champagne cork reaches a velocity of about 40 miles per hour when popped out of the bottle (that’s approximately 64 kilometres per hour). • The longest recorded flight of a champagne cork is over 177 feet (54 meters).

TIPS AND TRICKS

• It’s always recommended that you slant the bottle at a 45-degree angle and carefully twist the cork out with a towel covering the bottle so no wine escapes and you don’t hurt a bystander. • When drinking from a champagne glass, make sure to hold on to the stem of the glass only – if you hold it by the glass itself, the champagne will warm up and lose its fizz.

• Never gulp down champagne because the bubbles will cause the alcohol to enter your bloodstream too fast causing a headache. Savor the taste by sipping and also dissipate the bubbles before swallowing.

TYPES OF CHAMPAGNE GLASSES

As a rule, there are three types of champagne glasses to choose from. They are champagne flutes, champagne coupes and champagne tulips. Champagne Flutes – Champagne flutes not only aid in capturing the flavor and aroma, but also provides for a nicer appearance as well. Champagne Coupes – These are the oldest type of champagne glasses and were very popular in the early 20th century, but have since been surpassed by the flute glass. Champagne Tulips – Some connoisseurs recommend champagne tulips when consuming many of the finer French champagnes because the wider base will allow the flavors to be captured and therefore, preserves the taste.
