ed’snote introducing the experience

FASHION SENSELESS Fashion for me is an art best left to the girlfriend. It’s not that I’ve never cared to invest a rat’s behind in it; I just wasn’t born with any fashion sense beyond the basics that keep me from looking unique for the wrong reasons. Thankfully, the rest of the 360 Celsius team has more than enough of that ‘sense’ to make-up for my lack of which. Together with the talented Jonathan Liang, a successful local designer who has now gone international and is currently based in Paris, we have managed to put together this fashionthemed issue for you. Not only did Jonathan help with our cover shoot – he even arranged for an exclusive 360 Celsius fashion shoot in Paris which featured works of other Malaysian designers. As you would have probably have noticed by now, our front cover this issue is graced by none other than the beautiful Tengku Chanela, who was also involved in a series of very interesting shots that you will find in her feature. One of the highlights of the shoot would have to be the majestic bird of prey that was generously loaned to us by Muzeum Alam Semula Jadi (Putrajaya). Called the Blyth’s Hawk Eagle (Nisaetus alboniger), the life-like specimen was actually an extremely well-preserved stuffed animal that was prepared and displayed at Muzium Negara over 30-years ago.

There is so much more goodness in the magazine to enjoy, but before I end my note, I’d like to stress that if it wasn’t for the redundant yet necessary self-censorship that eat away at our diminishing supply of rat asses day by day, you wouldn’t have to read between any lines to thoroughly experience it all. I will now stop typing so that you may enjoy the rest of our guideline-ravaged content.

to be loved

by MICHAEL BUBLÉ Once again, the crooning Canuck sticks to his tried-and-tested formula, placing his own take on classic tracks made famous by some of the biggest names in music history. And once again, the album becomes a hit. On To Be Loved, four of the 14 tracks are Bublé -originals, including After All, co-written and performed with fellow country-men Bryan Adams. As far as collaborations as concerned, Bublé joins Oscar winning actress Reese Witherspoon in Something Stupid, a Frank and Nancy Sinatra original, Have I Told You Lately That I Love You with Naturally 7, and Nevertheless (I’m In Love With You) with The Puppini Sisters. So, even if To Be Loved isn’t the most original record around, it sure reaffirms Bublé as the world’s most successful male jazz vocalist at this moment in time. LISTEN TO: “It’s A Beautiful Day”, “Who’s Lovin’ You”, “Close Your Eyes”

RANDOM ACCESS MEMORIES BY DAFT PUNK When one of the industry’s most original and elusive pop acts of the past decade announces the release of their brand new album, it instantly becomes the most anticipated album of the year. Random Access Memories could easily be the biggest dance album of the year too. With a mile-long high-profile collaborators list like disco legends Giorgio Moroder and Nile Rodgers, hip-hop star Pharrell Williams and an indie rocker like Julian Casablancas from The Strokes, this isn’t just a disco album – it’s a soft rock album, a smooth-jazz album, a mishmash of soundtrack music and with a bit of 70s rock. Guetta fans, this one’s not for you. LISTEN TO: “Get Lucky” feat. Pharrell, “Giorgio by Moroder”, “Doin’ It Right”

THE GREAT GATSBY: MUSIC FROM BAZ LUHRMANN’S FILM BY vARIOUS ARTISTS If you’re wondering how a 21st century kingpin rapper could have produced the musical score for a film based in the early 20th century, take a listen to the soundtrack of The Great Gatsby. Not only does the movie have a decadent spin on it, so does the soundtrack. Produced by Jay-Z, the soundtrack is a musical extravaganza featuring some of the biggest names in the music industry – Lana Del Rey, Florence and the Machine, The xx, Jack White, André 3000 and Jigga’s missus Beyoncé. LISTEN TO: “100$ Bill”, “Over The Love”, “Kill And Run”

WHERE IT ALL BEGAN by MATTHEW MORRISON Though this seriously sounds like a more befitting track listing for “The Great Gatsby”, it isn’t. Instead, Where It All Began is by “Glee” star Matthew Morrison; and, it happens to be the first release from Adam Levine’s new record label, 222 Records. ‘Mr. Schue’ gleefully heads backs to his Broadway roots with this latest album which consists of treasured classics from famous Broadway musicals, including West Side Story, My Fair Lady and Guys and Dolls – I feel like throwing a swanky cocktail party right about now! LISTEN TO: “Singin’ In The Rain”, “Luck Be A Lady”, “West Side Story Medley”, “It Don’t Mean A Thing”

FILM TO FASHION HOW THE SILVERSCREEN SHAPED OUR SENSE OF STYLE Hollywood and the fashion world reflect and complement each other. Throughout the history of cinema, clothing trends and styles have influenced the wardrobe choices of many films and vice versa. Movies can sometimes inspire or bring to prominence a particular look or appeal that can define an era and stand the test of time. Here are a few of the most iconic:

022

Rebel without a Cause (1955) James Dean, Natalie Wood and Sal Mineo

When James Dean swaggered and smoldered in cinemas and drive by movie theaters across America, an entire generation of young girls swooned in breathless palpitations, while young men swore to copy the look, the attitude and the hair. James Dean was attired in a white t-shirt, leather jacket and jeans. Back then, young men didn’t wear this sort of clothing. The white t-shirt was actually an undershirt, and functioned like underwear or wife beater shirts today. It was supposed to be worn underneath another shirt. Neither did they wear it with a leather jacket and jeans combo. The non-conventional style suited the rebellious nature of ‘Jim Stark’. His signature look would inspire a generation of 1950s teens. James Dean plays 17 year old Jim Stark who comes from an unhappy family background and in the course of the film engages in public drunkenness, defends a younger boy from bullies, engages in a knife fight and even challenges the bully

named Buzz to a ‘chicken run’ with stolen cars towards a cliff the first person who stops before the cliff edge loses. Suffice to say Buzz dies. This leads to the tragic ending of the film. Along the way Jim reconciles with his father, falls in love and even cries like a baby. But it was more than just the style. Rebel was perhaps the pioneer film that explored issues of conflict, non-conformity and family strife between the younger generation and their parents. It also figuratively and literally immortalized James Dean forever more as the cultural and fashion icon of 1950’s rebellious youth. Eerily, he died a month before the film opened in a car crash. So influential is the film (and the tragedy of Dean’s death) that even the ‘chicken run’ scenario has been countlessly copied, paid homage too and parodied – both in 50’s themed films like Grease II and horror films as well as other popular media.

Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961)

Audrey Hepburn, George Peppard, with Patricia Neal, Martin Balsam, Buddy Ebsen, and Mickey Rooney.

This was the origin of one of the most endearing and enduring fashion trends of all time: the little black dress. Although Coco Chanel designed it in the 1920s, it was still relatively unknown. But that all changed in 1961 when Audrey Hepburn dazzled across the screen wearing a black dress that was usually sleeveless and conforming to her body and was cut two inches or so above her knee, with a low sensual neckline to highlight the string of pearls that she wore. This look has become the standard for sophisticated evening wear for years to come even till today. It’s no exaggeration that almost any style conscious woman in the Western hemisphere probably has their own little black dress in her closet. Audrey Hepburn herself is brilliant as ‘Holly Golightly’, a 15 year old wife who absconds from her husband for the big city. And whose single minded pursuit of material happiness turns her into a conniving, naughty little minx who nevertheless charms moviegoers with her waifish appeal and her wide-eyed, childlike innocence. On the way she runs into an aspiring writer played by George Peppard and a series of potential wealthy suitors. Does true love conquer all or will her penchant for expensive shoes and trinkets win out?

Dr.No (1962)

Sean Connery, Ursula Andress, Joseph Weisman and Jack Lord There is probably no other fashion trend that took off just after one scene than when Ursula Andress comes ashore, proudly and without a care in the world in Dr. No wearing a two-piece white bikini. It is often regarded as heralding the birth of the sexual revolution and women’s empowerment, coming as it did at the end of the conservative 1950s and the beginning of the free-swinging 60s. Bikini sales skyrocketed after Dr.No came out. Unlike today’s bikinis which are far more daring and skimpier (example string bikinis), the Dr.No bikini was wider and covered more of the breast and the pubic area. It also had a British belt with buckles and a side scabbard for sheathing a knife that Honey Ryder uses to pry shells from the reef. Dr.No was the first of what was to be the most successful and longest running film franchise in history, the James Bond films. Based on the novels of Ian Fleming about the exploits of the womanizing, martini

026

guzzling, licensed to kill MI6 agent 007 James Bond. In his maiden installment, Bond is sent to Jamaica to find out what happened to a murdered British intelligence agent. During the course of his investigation he finds himself facing the diabolical threat of Dr.Julius No and SPECTRE. But 007 is not alone. The suave sophisticated Bond has allies, most noticeably CIA agent Felix and a blonde bombshell girl who spends her days collecting shells, Honey Ryder (Ursula Andress). Bond must somehow foil Dr.No’s fiendish plot, save the world and get the girl. Even now, 60 years after it first appeared on the silver screen, the Dr.No bikini is still regarded as one of the sexiest and most powerful fashion film icons of all time. Future generations of women view it as a dramatic affirmation of womanhood - sensual, powerful, liberated. Future generations of men are just as appreciative. We are in eternal debt to Ursula Andress for starting the white bikini trend and for making the bikini popular.

Risky Business (1983) Tom Cruise, Rebecca De Mornay

Tom Cruise has been good to the sunglasses or shades industry. He has been credited by many for at least two sunglasses styles becoming fashion trends that have lasted well into today. The iconic teardrop lens of the Aviator style from Ray Ban, which he wore in his seminal film Top Gun in 1986, drove sales of the brand through the roof. But earlier he had done a similar thing for the Wayfarer sunglasses as well. Rewind a few years back. In Risky Business, young freshfaced Tom Cruise would star in his break out role as Joel Goodson, the high school kid with wealthy parents who, despite his surname, hires a stunning blonde hooker played by Rebecca De Mornay when his parents are out of town. This leads to a chain of events and comic hijinks that culminate in the boy getting the girl…sorta.

In the course of the film Tom wears a pair of Wayfarer sunglasses as he morphs from a serious, studious kid to a sexier self-confident teen who dances in his undies (not while wearing the shades of course). The sale of Wayfarers exploded after the film opened – from a low of 18,000 to about 360,000 and later to 1.5 million. Trendsetters and followers wanted to wear the iconic heavy framed shades. Despite being a teen comedy, the film’s overt sexuality, and appeal to hedonism and material wealth were signifiers of the 80s era of decadence. Joel breaks a rule, has mind-blowing sex, and yet still gets the rewards and the girl, at the end. Today the Wayfarer is enjoying a revival of sorts with young celebrities such as Chloe Sevigny, Robert Pattinson and Mary Kate Olsen sporting a pair. It also featured in the film Twilight, Edward Cullen wears it in school.

BEYOND THE RUNWAY The interplay between fashion, individuals and society Like all forms of art, fashion is both inspired and inspirational – an expression of personal creativity as well as a representation of values and principles to change the world. Here are a few books looking at the interplay between fashion, individuals and society as a whole.

House of Versace: Untold Story of Genius, Murder and Survival Author Deborah Ball Publisher Crown Business The murder of Gianni Versace by serial killer Andrew Cunanan on the morning of July 15th, 1997 was one of the most shocking headlines to hit the fashion scene. ‘Versace’, the brand he made famous; is synonymous with baroque prints, flashy colors and a celebration of the outrageous. It was, and still is, one of the more successful fashion houses to have graced the world stage. Author Deborah Ball gives readers an insight into the family drama, passion and tragedy of this illustrious fashion house with this impressive debut work. It is a living record of not only Versace the brand, but the Versace family itself. Deborah traces the journey of Gianni from unremarkable beginnings to his meteoric rise, as well as that of his elder brother Santo and his younger sister Donatella and her daughter Allegra. Details of how Versace courted celebrities mean that not only is there a ton of material and name-dropping, but also an understanding of the hard work that was involved. The Funeral chapter alone is worth it for a ‘who’s who’ of the rich and famous of the late 90’s. Particularly interesting is the perspective that we get of the women of the Versace family, and the price it seemed they had to pay. Donatella had to deal with the repercussions of her beloved brother’s death, both on a personal level, as well steering the company through its most turbulent period. At times the pressure would prove overwhelming. She struggled, even descending into a spiral of drug abuse and cocaine addiction, before slowly clawing her way back to recovery. Her daughter Allegra who was named heir of the Versace empire at age eleven; suffered hysteria on news of her uncle’s murder, as well as battling anorexia. Chapters are brimming with detail and personal anecdotes of the Versace family. Despite this being her debut non-fiction work, Deborah’s tireless research has produced a meticulously detailed effort. One that not only charts the rise of the Versace brand; but also the tempestuous personalities and family bonds behind it - as well as the tragedy of Gianni’s death and its repercussions.

often interchangeable with terms such as ‘slut’ and ‘hoe’/whore in everyday parlance. Does it mean whenever a young girl dresses provocatively or participates in a beauty pageant she is automatically promiscuous? There is also dearth of material in the book on the actual views of the women and girls who engage in these trends. Does a woman really believe she is being sexually exploited every time she buys a G-string thong? Are the parents of young girls really making their daughters into mini-skanks by purchasing make-up kits for them? Instead, Oppliger seems almost dismissive of the idea that young women and their families may have a legitimate say in how they dress or what they choose to do. By not providing space for these women to explain in their own words, she falls into the trap of projecting her own conclusions on individual actions and behaviors, which by definition can often defy predictions.

Girls Gone Skank: The Sexualisation of Girls in

wear the fashions, fan-girl celebs who use sexual imagery, and join in activities such as beauty pageants. All of this under the guise of girl-power and female emancipation.

Author Patrice A. Oppliger Publisher McFarland

Oppliger examines the current obsession with surface appeal such as beauty pageants for kids, plastic surgery, the selling of bras and adult style lingerie to under 14 year olds, the use of scantily clad models in advertising and mass media and more. In terms of fashion trends, the wearing of G-string thongs with low cut jeans, bare midriffs, belly button rings and tramp stamp tattoos, and ever shorter skirts and shorts. Oppliger even refers to this trend as ‘skank chic’.

American Culture

The title is a play on the ‘Girl’s Gone Wild’ videos, although ‘Skank’ has a far more pejorative connotation. This book examines the impact of sexually suggestive imagery in media and pop culture, particularly on young women. According to Prof. Oppliger, the increasing prevalence of titillation and sexualization of ever younger girls in popular culture not only makes it more acceptable; but also ropes in the younger female audience into participating and perpetuating in their own sexual exploitation as they buy products,

However the issue with her analysis is that she doesn’t really provide an operational definition of what she means by ‘skank’. The problem here is that the word’s dictionary meaning is ‘someone unpleasant or dirty’, but in practice (slang) the term denotes a woman who is sexually promiscuous and is

One Thousand Moustaches: A Cultural History of the Mo Author Allan Peterkin Publisher Arsenal Pulp Press What’s the common bond between Mahatma Gandhi, Charlie Chaplin, Albert Einstein, Adolph Hitler and Tom Selleck? Answer: They were all proud owners and growers of upper lip hair, a.k.a. moustaches. Once a symbol of masculinity, the ‘stache’ was relegated to the corners of untrendy fashion history as baby-faced, smooth cheeked boy-toy types dominated the public eye. Recently, it’s been enjoying a revival of sorts. This is mainly due to the month of ‘Movember’, a grass roots global campaign where guys volunteer to grow a moustache throughout the month of November – all in support of prostate cancer research. Nowadays even hot young Hollywood celebs like Ryan Gosling and Ashton Kutcher have been spotted sporting their own handlebars. Allan Peterkin’s book is pretty much a celebration of the Mo. Tracing its evolution in history and media depictions in society, to its influence in pop culture. Readers are introduced to the various styles of lip hair growth, from the ‘Fu Manchu’ to the’ Zorro’, to the ‘Chevron’ and even the ‘Lady Tickler’ as well as many more. There’s also a guide to synonyms both humorous and sometimes a bit naughty – such as the Manometer, the Mouthbrow, Facial Furniture, Snot Catcher, Lip Fuzz and Fanny Duster among others. The book also serves as a manual on growing, grooming and styling your ‘stache’ the way you want it. It’s also full of interesting and quirky bits of facts to liven up the whole Mo experience. For example did you know a moustache can hold 20% its own weight in liquid? I certainly didn’t. Nor was I aware that in some cities in India, policemen are paid by the size of their handlebars - the bigger the ‘stache’, the higher their pay because of its symbolic power and authority. These are just a few of the fascinating details furbished in the book. Boys, get this funny and informative homage to the Mo, grow a lady tickler and become Men.

A Quiet Revolution: The Veil’s Resurgence from the Middle East to America Author Leila Ahmad Publisher Yale University Press The issue of the veil or ‘Hijab’ is a pretty emotive one in interfaith discourse. Especially true in the post 9-11 world that we are living in. Leila Ahmad’s latest work analyses the changing roles and values that Muslim women have attached to the wearing of the veil – a reflection of how they see themselves evolving. The book can be divided broadly into two parts - the first being a history of the veil, and how it evolved, specifically in her native Egypt from the British colonial period to the post-colonial era. The second looks at the role of the veil and Muslim women in the New World, specifically the United States. Rather than calling for the institution of the veil to be abolished, Ahmad offers a nuanced hope that Muslim women in America wear the veil as a form of individual expression against social injustice from outside and inside the Muslim community itself. As a stand against gender oppression from within the Muslim community, and also against minority oppression from the majority non-Muslim society in which they live. Yet it does seem however that the book has been overtaken by events on the ground. In post-revolutionary Egypt, Muslim feminists and their former adversaries; women in full covering or Niqab - are now united over issues concerning the rise of violence against women, the simmering tension between moderates and Islamists concerning the constitutional framework of the new government as well as the role of women in it (e.g. the new constitution’s language suggests the president is a ‘he’). For the women on the ground in the Middle East, these matters seem to be of more pressing concern then questions on whether women should be veiled or not.

Haslin Ismail From boy wonder to first-class fantasy

Having had the honour of following Haslin Ismail’s career since the very beginning, I can safely vouch for a genuine sense of evolution on the artist’s part. My first encounter with the artist’s works was in a small gallery in Lucky Garden, Bangsar. Owned by the late Mohd Nurul Husni, Kebun Mimpi – or Garden of Dreams – was a hideaway for blossoming artists, and Haslin’s imaginative works that delved deep into the recesses of fantasy and fiction were definite attention-grabbers. Notable were his artist’s books. You needed to wear white gloves, like a museum custodian, to flick from one fragile page to the next, each one pregnant with the artist’s markings and mayhem. His larger artworks then were no less experimental. Cardboard, string, and all manner of found objects dangled precariously from the canvases, and altogether, his works encapsulated the qualities of science fiction and fantasy – his two great loves. Today, these levels of experimentation have paved way for a more contemplated form of art; Haslin, I can safely say, has matured into an artist with a truly distinct style of his own. Indeed, looking back at this early exhibition from 2008 is perhaps a tad ambitious, and certainly, too far-flung in the past for most of us to analyse his latest works. His last solo exhibition makes for a better pointof-comparison. Held just last year, he exhibited a body of work at Rimbun Dahan, Kuang, the swansong to his residency at that green oasis of an artist’s residency. The works were larger than life. Paintings towered above the average gallery-goer, the number of ink drawings and

watercolours on paper could have formed a queue to the moon, and the narrative in his subject matter was more considered than ever before. Nature also played a strong role in this body of work. Surrounded by Rimbun Dahan’s lush greenery, the artist naturally channeled more organic forms into his works, which largely spoke of the duel between man and machine. Humanoids and machine parts commanded his canvases, and the artist’s mechanised worlds paid homage to one of Haslin’s favourite Japanese animes, Ghost in the Shell. Today, those nuances have lingered, and they are joined by some other arguments. Man versus machine continues to hold court as the commanding theme, however, Haslin has depicted this battle in a more dramatized way; the very act of humans transforming into mechanised beings have been depicted with more exaggeration, emphasis, and clarity. Take Dorsiventrality, for example. In this work, the artist has portrayed a human chest (the rib cage is unmistakable), with bones elegantly morphing into cogwheels, bolts, and all.

033

creativeartist text Rachel Jenagaratnam images G13 Gallery

034

Right Image ‘Transfiguration’

Haslin’s tactic for altering these human forms have been shadowing and coloring techniques that have been honed over the years. Indeed, Haslin has been paying more attention to these elements as far as the human anatomy goes. And whereas before humans were portrayed more loosely, the artist has endeavoured to portray the human anatomy with more discipline this time around. Consider Qalbu, where the very essence of the human form – bone, muscles, and organs – are exhibited in full glory; the work is more scientific than fantastical, to put it more succinctly. Other differences abound, too. Unlike his Rimbun Dahan exhibition, which featured a plethora of mediums and materials, Haslin has limited his production to drawings, watercolours, and paintings for this solo. Jute, a material he experimented with before, has been allowed to play a staring role in his paintings, offering the perfect backdrop on which to work. Of natural origin, jute’s thickness and texture affords for different characteristics; the artist explains that his many layers of paint find an ideal home with this material.

We’ll analyze the work Transfiguration, for argument’s sake. A large piece that features a tree that’s come to life, its limbs manifest across the canvas and colours pop in hallucinogenic hues. Jute paved the way for this to happen. According to Haslin, its natural properties allow the paint to shine forth and create depth for his chosen subject matter. The dramatics of his transfigurations, in short, is perfectly directed by the artist’s choice of jute over canvas, the ofttimes more reliable suspect. If it isn’t already apparent, Haslin has markedly progressed from being a mere fantasy artist. Whilst his subject matter has roots in worlds created by individuals such as Hayao Miyazaki or H.R. Giger, his works are no longer confined to the comic book genre. Instead, the artist has attempted to inject more philosophical questions into his art. Man versus machine functions as an umbrella theme, but the themes that branch out from his main topic are manifold, and like his paint, they are multi-layered. Love and family is one of them, and so are death and transcendence, and existentialism. What the artist seeks for audiences to investigate through his art is what it ultimately means to be human in this day and age.

“...the natural properties of jute allow the paint to shine forth and create depth for his chosen subject matter.” 035

Top Image Contemplation Bottom Image Death

Man and nature are intertwined, argues the artist, but how far does man abandon nature in favour of the machine? Just how much destruction have we caused in favour of the conveniences that machines allow, and to what end are we all willing to discard our very humanness for progress? A lot, explain Haslin’s paintings. In Human, we see these symptoms very clearly – we’re human, but in overemphasizing the machine, are we not all losing our individuality and becoming mere uniformed skeletons? It’s been said before, but it bears repeating that Haslin’s work of late has a ‘softer’ touch than his works from as recent as a half-a-decade ago. Artist friends had spotted this first, and when questioned, Haslin confirmed their hypothesis. This change, the abandonment of macabre and horror, came along at about the same time as his first-born, a daughter. Today, the artist’s subject matter and application matches his personal life; his subject matter is less grotesque, the images aren’t as surreal, and the softer edges of his lines speak of his newfound role as a father. And adding to this are other notable changes, such as flatter surfaces and two-dimensionality – his paint application, like his life, is now more serene. So it is, as mentioned at the start of this essay, that Haslin has evolved. His works of today carry a different dimension that has evolved from humble beginnings in the land of fantasy and youth. Haslin, boy wonder, has grown up. He has transfigured, so to speak, like the very characters that you see in his art today. www.g13gallery.com

“If it were not for Jonathan Liang, my goals and dreams would be very different. ”

For the benefit of our readers, give us an insight into your background and history - specifically your formative years. In my short years, I have led a colorful life. One where I learned that by exposing oneself to various environments and experiences it led me to gain personal wisdom and knowledge way beyond my peers - especially at a young age.

I was lucky enough to be enrolled in international schools, schools in the US as well as local Malaysian schools. I was always involved in sports and extracurricular activities and always keeping myself busy. One thing that was constant was my love for fashion, music and design. I have a vast appreciation for things that touch the soul, enrich me, and add to one’s character. I am a seeker of beauty in all forms. I started becoming extra competitive in my mid teen years; this was when I joined competitions like the MTV VJ HUNT and become a finalist when I was 17 years of age. I hosted chart shows back then, so I have met many people in the industry. That exposure boosted my confidence and career which involved doing magazine shoots and covers as well. I eventually moved on to organizing events in Australia where my DJ friends would spin. My first few jobs were in retail, but one that I will never forget was working for Luxury Concepts, because most of my skill in making business decisions comes from them.

Did your early experiences prove beneficial when you started out as an entrepreneur?

Yes of course, they were essential to my growth. One thing you must keep in mind at all times – to remember the people who were there during your growth. I still maintain connections in various fields; it is always good to treat people with appreciation and respect.

040

What’s the story behind the Jonathan Liang (JL) brand – its initial history, background, objectives and aims?

If it wasn’t for Jonathan Liang himself, I wouldn’t be in the company. If it were not for him, my goals and dreams would be very different. His personality, his perseverance, his appreciation for art, and most of all his heart, is what made me take on this project. When he came to me asking for my help, it was an immediate ‘yes’ for me. There is so much more that needs to be achieved, but we are well on our way to making things happen. Our goal is to become a global Malaysian brand. And my dream is for someone big to recognize his talent and drive so that he may apply his skills in a greater capacity and on a grander stage.

What is the lifestyle you are promoting with the brand? It’s all about independent women who are unafraid of taking on the world. Who dream big and do big. All with a splash of fun. Who doesn’t love to have fun?

As a budding female entrepreneur, did you encounter any teething issues or concerns and how did you overcome them?

I take things one step at a time, recognize what needs tweaking, what we lack, and enlist the help of those who know better. Always be open to learning.

In terms of marketing, who is your target audience and how do you plan to reach and appeal to them?

Our target audience range mainly from middle to high income professional. We reach them through our shows, tradeshows, magazine exposure, and marketing. But above all that, the main draw is the experience of wearing a Jonathan Liang piece; how it feels when you put it on, pride and beauty going hand-in-hand.

How has the consumer response been?

It’s been good. We have many customers that love our pieces. We’re always grateful for their support and input.

What are your future plans for expansion? Where do you see Jonathan Liang and yourself in the next 5-10 years?

The team and I would love to see us stocked at more reputable boutiques, multi brand stores and even collaboration with retailers to create diffusion lines. That means providing more affordability for the mass market.

Your partnership with Jonathan Liang is well known. Tell us how did it all come about? What made the working collaboration such an effective one?

What makes it workable is our similar taste and style. We’re always challenging each other in terms of inspiration, fabric choices, and such. The thing is, when I see talent, especially Malaysian-born or made like Jonathan is, I love to support it and contribute in any way I can. At the end of the day I want people to be proud of individuals like him.

Where would you like to be in the future?

I want us to be in Joyce or Lane Crawford in Hong Kong, and in Collette in Paris. This is where I see JL and hope for it to be stocked one day, and maybe eventually in the US as well.

What type of qualities and attributes do you look for in new members joining team Jonathan Liang?

life I’m blessed to say that I can achieve all of my dreams.

I focus on those with a broad range in terms of creativity, outlook and attitude. Along with people who have a distinct sense of style, that we can all appreciate and inspire each other with, as well as having good intentions and potential room for growth. Being open minded is definitely a plus, but they must also be focused.

Has being a fashion socialite and entrepreneur who is constantly under the media spotlight been a positive or negative?

On recruitment do you emphasize youth, idealism and passion; or maturity, experience and pragmatism?

On a personal note, what is your aspiration or dream? What do you hope to accomplish?

How do you juggle between being a working mother and wife with being a successful entrepreneur?

How would you like to be remembered? What would you like your legacy to be?

Jonathan is already an idealist so we don’t need any more of that (laughs). He is definitely the creative side, while Jake (our partner) and I are the realists, so we balance things out. We also have another member, Aina, onboard to keep things together. She has good PR skills and is an excellent representative for the label.

I take holidays. I love new experiences and I love spoiling myself for all the hard work put in. It makes it more meaningful and easier with the reward at the end. My husband is my rock and biggest fan, while my daughter gives me purpose. Because of their presence in my

It’s always positive. Despite my involvement in the industry and near constant exposure to such manic craziness, I am actually quite the ‘Lone Ranger’. I prefer quality to quantity.

It’s mainly about changing the face of Malaysian fashion; showing people that dreams can happen. Hopefully, I can also be an inspiration to other women - working mothers and wives as well as single women. It’s about never giving up on your dreams. Always have focus and purpose in life. At the end of the day it’s all for the next generation.

I’d like to be remembered as someone who made an impact on the Malaysian fashion industry, no matter how small that impact may be. On a personal level, I’d love to be remembered as someone who made the dreams of those who knew her, come true.

THE FEMALE

FORMULA JONATHAN LIANG DESIGNS TO WINNING PERFECTION

Fashion to the uninitiated appears to be mainly about flamboyance and a celebration of the outrageous. But as one of Malaysia’s brightest fashion talents, hotshot designer Jonathan Liang sees fashion essentially as a means of giving expression to the beauty of the feminine form. We chat with Jonathan about his insights and get a glimpse of the ‘essence’ that drives his ethos and achievements.

For the benefit of our readers, kindly give us a brief introduction on your background.

I’ve always been an artist. There was always a concept in my mind and that desire to translate it to another medium. At some point, it just wasn’t enough. I wanted something more, and I needed a third step. Fashion was that route — another way for me to voice my creativity.

As a fashion designer, especially one who has enjoyed the international limelight, what does your job entail?

Designing. But to be honest, it really does require an intense level of creativity. I mean, there are some days I don’t think I’ll be able to create a single piece, but then there are others where I can’t step away from the sewing machine.

What compelled you to move to Paris in 2011?

I don’t know. Sometimes, a change of atmosphere is the best way to be more creative. One morning, I woke up and found myself needing something new. So, I bought a one-way ticket to Paris! Now, I’ve been here for almost three years, and I absolutely love it (except maybe for the smell of the Metro).

048

Many aspiring fashion designers can only dream of establishing themselves in the international fashion hub that is Paris. How did you manage to do it so quickly?

To be honest, it’s all about timing. You know, you always hear how it’s all in “who you know,” but sometimes it’s very true. I was blessed to be able to get work in Paris, but it really all came after I won the Carnet De Mode Young Designer’s Award.

You have won many awards and met a lot of success at a very early stage of your career. What’s your secret?

I don’t think there’s any secret. I believe the most important aspect of my work is staying true to my inspiration and designs. There’s more to this industry than what most people might think. We’re more than tough competition; it’s art. And staying true to that art is the secret, I guess.

How would you define originality?

For me, it’s about having your own opinions and perceptions; away from all things around you (society, friends, media, etc.). And those values set you apart from others — as an individual.

How would you define your designs? In three words: Graceful, strong and confident.

What motivates you?

The desire to design? It’s just born within me. An innate aspiration. Plus, I’m extremely inspired by my family and friends. The loved ones who’ve always inspired me to be the truest and best version of myself.

In your opinion, what are the top five staple pieces that every woman needs to have in her wardrobe?

Oh, every woman needs a good pair of heels, that’s for sure! And a boyfriend blazer. Also, skinny, fitted jeans. And every woman wouldn’t be without at least one extravagant dress (I’m thinking of the new look: a cinched waist). Of course, no outfit would be complete without an accessory, and I think every girl deserves a handy clutch.

“I have to face all kinds of challenges during every expedition and make all kinds of sacrifices to achieve my dreams.” You’ve mentioned in other interviews that your appreciation and keen understanding of the female form inspires your ideas. Care to elaborate on how the fascination began and how it inspires you?

Well, you know I’ve been an artist since an early age. Since then, I’ve been drawing the female form in various forms and complexities. I guess it was that understanding of the female form that first led me to a deeper appreciation of the true art of what it means to be a fashion designer.

Having been around the world with your work, what is your take on the state of fashion in Malaysia?

It’s definitely growing. I think it can progress even further, especially with an open mind.

success, but I hope it was because they appreciated my concepts, silhouettes and fabrics.

What are some of the main challenges faced by local fashion designers? Why?

Will you be working on men’s fashion anytime soon? Why?

Funding, for sure. And that’s not just a domestic concern. International designers face the same concern all across the globe. Like every business, fashion needs capital to start.

As a fashion designer who has had international success, what are the main challenges that you face?

Aside from funding, it’s always a struggle to continue to push out new and innovative pieces every season; however, I think that’s also the beauty and excitement behind all the business aspects of such a competitive industry.

What do you love most about what you do?

I don’t know. I really just love to see the creations I envision come to life. There’s really no prouder moment.

Did you expect your first collection to win several awards at the London Fashion Week? Why do you think it had such an appeal to your audience there? Never! I was not expecting such a warm welcome. I’m not sure why it was such a

Nope, it’s definitely not in the cards at the moment. Particularly because it’s not exactly my forte.

What inspired you to create the collection for S/S 2013?

An abandoned green house and works by Lucile Hadzihalilovic.

What have you learned about the industry and yourself from your experience in the fashion industry?

I learned to be patient. With any art, that’s extremely important. On top of that, you must face the fact that you should be realistic and budget focused. Although fashion is art, it’s also extremely business oriented.

Has your creative direction and design ethos significantly changed since you first started out?

Well, it’s definitely matured a great deal. I would not say it necessarily “changed,” but it has definitely evolved – just as I have.

What do you strive to achieve in your designs?

As I mentioned earlier, I strive to evoke a graceful yet strong and confident woman. Whether that’s evoked within my subtle construction or in my floral prints. I want my pieces to become a symbol of strength for the woman who wears them. I feel like there’s something really comforting about that.

What will we never see you produce?

I don’t like to think there’s anything outside the realm of possibilities. I definitely feel like there’s beauty in everything. That being said, you probably won’t be seeing any menswear coming out of Jonathan Liang anytime soon.

What do you do differently when catering to the Malaysian market?

When looking to target the Malaysian market, I try to find ways to offer modest clothes with an innovative twist.

What are your ultimate long-term goals?

Really, I just want to continue doing what I love. I mean, that’s what everyone wants, right? It shouldn’t be about the fame or the money, but to be an artist doing what he loves.

Do you have any future plans that you would like to share with our readers? I wish! I can definitely tell you I am working on a few projects, but I’ve got to keep them all hush hush at the moment.

The Model

Warrior LOOKING GOOD AND KICKING BUTT

Sometimes, aggression and beauty go hand-in-hand. Ask Peter Davis. The model, actor and MMA fighter flits easily between prancing on a runway, to acting in front of a camera, to kicking someone’s head in a cage match. We ask this triple threat man about living life looking as beautiful as a butterfly while stinging as viciously as a bee.

051

Tell us a bit about your background. How and where did you spend your childhood and schooling?

Well, I grew up in England in a place called Brighton. School was fun, but there were times where I became a bit of a victim as I always looked Chinese in most of the other kid’s eyes.

Were you a rambunctious child? Aggressive? Did you get into fights as a kid?

I was always the nice kid and usually polite. I did get into fights, but I was rarely the aggressor.

So which came first, the fighter or the model?

Fighting came before modeling. I’ve been training and testing out my skills for over 10 years now. Modeling only happened when I moved out to Asia.

You’re the reigning Cage Fighting Championship (CFC) champion. Give us a brief background as to what CFC is all about and your involvement.

That’s an old title now won many years ago, but it has let me move on to bigger things such as the One Fighting Championship. I fought in the ONE FC: Return of Warriors, which was held in Malaysia earlier in February.

052

Was MMA fighting due to interest or spillover from a health-oriented lifestyle?

At 20, I found Wuji Chuan (now Wuji Sanshou). It was a fun experience learning standup, ground game and the throws in-between. We also learnt traditional Chi Kung. The students, including myself decided to test what we knew by entering MMA competitions after a couple of years of training.

What type of martial arts or fighting style do you specialize in? Or are you more of an eclectic all-rounder?

In 2006 you took a break and did not participate in any competition for a few years. May we know why?

It was the financial crisis, my job amongst other big things disappeared. I decided to go to Asia to try my hand at modeling. It happened and I thought that fighting was a bit of a contradictory activity, which it is.

Then in 2011 you returned to competitive fighting. Again, what prompted that decision?

Wuji is my base style. It’s a little known style, but it is kind of seen as a full system in the sense that it encompasses a standup style and a ground style in one. People say that my standup striking is my strong point and I hope to prove them right with upcoming fights.

It was a decision that I have not regretted. It came about when OneFC offered me a fight (I’m 31 years old now so not much longer to compete). I jumped on the chance as I had been training and teaching MMA with more and more enthusiasm over the last few years. It was time again to prove what I was capable of. History is still being written.

How much training do you do? What sort of regimen?

Have you adapted or modified your base style?

It depends if I’m fighting or not. “Off season”, I’ll train 3-5 times a week by teaching classes. When a fight is coming, such as now, I train every day. This means 2 sessions a day, up to 6 hours depending on what’s on the menu. It’s a tough grueling slug, especially because you’re eating less food, so that you make weight for your fight (I walk around at 78-80KG but I fight at 70.3KG).

I add Wrestling, BJJ and some western boxing to my Wuji Style. All together, it helps to make me a more well-rounded MMA fighter.

Fighting is an art, so where do you draw inspiration from?

Fluidity, moving from one thing to the next smoothly like a dance, countering your opponents’ moves and bettering them. Passion and fear, mixed into one.

“People say that my standup striking is my strong point and I hope to prove them right with upcoming fights.”

Prepping for a fight – do you study the opponent, and modify your approach accordingly (e.g. if he is a grappler, you plan countermeasures) or do you just go in with one method or approach (e.g. just get a knockout punch)?

If you’re lucky, you can view a couple of fights that your opponent has had on YouTube. Of course, you’ll make sure that you train counter measures for the other guy’s style; that’s the way you win. Against a good ground guy, I’ll practice more takedown defence, and against an opponent that’s a striker, I’ll just sharpen up my striking instinct.

When fighting, does preserving your model physique and features from damage figure into your tactics?

No. Winning the fight with as little damage as possible is an intelligent way of winning/ fighting. So it goes without saying that I’ll do my best to avoid my opponent’s strikes!

Who’s been your toughest opponent and hardest bout to date?

My next fight – I can’t give you the name, but it’s going to be a war!

Do you often get jibes or engage in locker room banter about being a ‘prettyboy/ladies man’?

Not really, just a tad but that’s ok. If you fight badly, that’s when the jibes begin.

On a serious note, do you find opponents try ‘extra’ harder when they’re facing you because of your modeling or ‘prettyboy’ status?

I think it might be an advantage. It might lure them into a false sense of security. Who knows?

I read somewhere that you broke someone’s jaw in a match. Is that true and how did it happen?

I setup a spinning back kick and caught the guy

053

featurepersonalities text kenneth lim images peter davis

off guard. After that, I hunted him around the cage until the referee stopped the fight. I must have hit his jaw hard a few times, because there was a huge amount of recoil from his head after one of my uppercuts, and that might have done it. It was 4 months with his jaw wired shut.

Have you ever been involved in a real Fight and could you describe it?

I’ve had a few street fights; they are messier than a cage fight, but much easier. If things go bad though - there is no referee to stop the proceedings. So, avoid trouble whenever you can.

What would your advice be to an untrained person involved in a real life fight?

Talk your way out of it - be smart. Then run or use your phone to call the police!

In terms of modeling, how did you get your start?

I started with Elite Model search Malaysia, that was my first ever attempt at a catwalk. It was terrible and I came in second place, but that’s cool. I was hooked up with some shows directly after that, with a company that’s now known as FlashLight Productions. Thanks guys!

What type of modeling do you do?

I do all sorts of modeling. I’m just tall enough to do runway shows, can look serious enough for model spreads and smile wide enough to do commercials. I’m very lucky in that sense. I’ve tried all aspects of modeling in various countries.

How would you define your experience as a model?

Modeling is interesting, exciting and pays the bills. If you book a big job, your bills are paid for a few months. I have travelled to loads of places with modeling and it’s a never ending party where ever you may land, even if that big job never gets landed. You get to meet loads of different people from different backgrounds, each with their story to tell. You can draw a lot of inspiration from their experiences. On the flip side, if you end up working with a bad agency, things can go bad fast and then you need to get out of a country and find somewhere else to base yourself. That’s effort. But it’s not as bad as walking to 4 or 5 castings a day in a sweltering hot country that you’re new to, whilst using public transport in your only Gucci shirt that’s starting to look more like an old gym t-shirt, but it smells worse! Then comes the casting that can be interesting in itself.

Any memorable experiences either on the runway or on a shoot that you’d like to share?

There are too many moments, but some of the best come from live shows when models forget their show choreography and all hell breaks loose! That happens especially in Asia where stages are smaller and the choreography has to be more “creative”.

054

Models including myself get confused as to which of the 18 positions we’re supposed to be standing in on stage and when we need to change to the next. The worst thing is you can’t just call out to the other models: “Position 6, just off to the side of stage left, next to position 12!” because it’s live and on stage. There were lots of eye and lip gestures, you get the picture!

Was acting a natural segue way or progression from modeling, or did you always have an interest in being on screen?

I had always wondered about acting after I started modeling and I thought that some TV commercial experience might help. I was very lucky to be casually casted for a movie called “Sell Out!” back in 2009 by director Yeo Joon Han. He was looking for some new talent and one day he asked me to cast when I was working on my old car in our parking lot. And the rest is history. Acting is hard to get right, there are 1001 ways to do it but only some feel right.

Can you give readers an idea of what kind of acting work you have done?

I’ve worked on several movies, such as ‘Sell Out!’ and ‘Apokalips’, playing lead characters. I did a stage drama called ‘Cabaret’ and I played the leading man with a tiny bit of singing. I’ve also acted in a few TV dramas in a mixture of Bahasa and English, sometimes with cameo roles and sometimes as one of the featured characters. The latest show to come out is “I Eat KL” on HyppTV833, where I play a chef that is a bit of a man about town. That’s a funny role.

What’s the most difficult thing you’ve had to do as an actor or a model?

Acting, taking the lead role, and playing two characters at the same time, in “Sell Out!” It was my first attempt at acting and it was a difficult step up from having no experience. But I made it and the film has won loads of international film awards from Asia to North America to Europe.

Who would you like to work or collaborate with as a model/Actor?

As a model, top-end brands, and world class photographers. As an actor, it would be great to star alongside some of the Hollywood greats that I watched growing up such as De’Niro, Michael Caine, and the likes.

Do you find it difficult to transition between being a model, MMA fighter and actor? If it’s easy what’s the secret? It’s not easy. Right now, I’m thinking about fighting – so everything else takes a backburner. Acting and modeling don’t mean so much to me at the moment. It’s not my priority. If I don’t focus on my upcoming fight, I could face a serious injury that can put me out of modeling, acting, and fighting for the foreseeable future.

FIT FOR FASHION FAY HOKULANI WORKS HARD FOR HER GOOD LOOKS

Looking good may come naturally for some people, but keeping fit and staying healthy while at it is always a challenge. For Fay Hokulani, health and fitness has always been at the top of her priority list. With an extremely fit body to show for, the celebrity blogger, model, host, radio personality, and fitness enthusiast is living proof her stringent fitness regimes are well worth the while. Tell us a bit about yourself.

I was born in Singapore and moved to Kuala Lumpur about three years ago. Currently, I’m the host for FourFourTwo Performance, a football program that teaches you how to train, eat and think like a professional player. I’m a passionate health advocate and on my way to becoming a certified personal trainer.

When did you first start your blog, and how different was it from what it has evolved to become today? I started WithLoveFay.com in November 2008 to share my fitness journey - the struggles, slip-ups, and rewards. When exercising becomes a chore, you’re likely to go through times where you just want to let go a little. I guess you can call that life! You may be extremely fit, but going through this phase is almost inevitable. That’s the reality and that’s what I wanted to share with the average young women - how I lost weight and have kept up a healthy lifestyle that they could realistically aspire to achieve with some motivation, support, and self-

discipline. I used to focus a lot more on cardio training and healthy eating, but since I learned about the benefits of weight training, it’s not just about being fit and staying in shape, because more importantly, it’s to be strong. You always need to take your fitness to the next level and that’s how I think my life and my blog has evolved.

How would you define your blog? What do you seek to achieve with it? There are many blogs out there that can teach you how to be pretty but youthful looks and vitality do not come in a bottle or at the make-up counter; they come from your kitchen and the gym!

The best reason you can give someone to adopt a healthy lifestyle is by doing it yourself and letting them see how it has helped you. What you talk about, you bring about; and for me, it’s health and fitness. Being healthy and staying fit is a choice that I’ve made because it makes me feel empowered and

strong. That’s the kind of positive energy that I’d like for myself to wake up with everyday and humbly influence on others.

How did you break into modeling and the entertainment business? Are these also something that you planned to do long ago or did they come along your way by chance?

When I was 18, I was talent-scouted to join a teenage modeling contest where I won third place. I enjoyed being in front of the camera and pursued modeling since. A few years later, I got into hosting a television program in Singapore for the local arts entertainment scene called ‘Score’. After moving to Kuala Lumpur, I joined Hitz.fm reporting the latest Hollywood buzz on the morning show with JJ and Ean. I’m so grateful that the opportunity to host FourFourTwo Performance came along, because not only am I able to be in front of the camera, I get to talk about fitness training and nutrition based on tips shared

“I’ve always admired fit girls, but I thought I was never going to achieve that kind of body.”

by top international soccer players.

With the colorful spectrum of jobs that you do, how would you define your career?

I suppose I’m a health and fitness advocate and entertainment professional at the moment, which is where I want to grow and develop my career and see what other opportunities I’ll discover. No matter what, I can safely say I’ll always advocate health and fitness to anyone who wants to listen.

Out of all the expertise that you are known for, is there one in particular that you would like to truly master, or is there something else that you are hoping to establish yourself with in the long run?

I’m currently working towards becoming a personal trainer certified under the American Council of Exercise (ACE). Teaching others with an international accreditation under my belt is one of my next steps to growing my health and fitness career. I’d also like to take up a course on Bikram Yoga next and hopefully be able to teach as well.

You are well-known to be a health enthusiast, but how did your passion for fitness and good health come about? Were you always this health and fitness conscious?

My interest in exercise and fitness started when my aunt gave me an inspiring book called ‘Body For Life’ back in 2007 when I was living with her in Florida. I remember being quite insecure about myself and my body. I never used to work out or eat healthy because I didn’t have any problems with my weight when I was younger. And then I got hit with a wake-up call. I knew I wanted to pursue modeling and to do, so I had to get back in shape. I started in-line skating or running every morning and once I started losing a bit of extra fat, I felt great about exercise and decided to join the gym. I had a personal trainer before, but like most girls, I trained not to build muscle, but to maintain my weight and ‘tone’. A few years later I met my current boyfriend and he introduced me more seriously to resistance training which opened up my eyes to fitness in a more general and serious way. I’ve always admired fit girls, but I thought I was never going to achieve that kind of body and I was a little intimidated to regularly hit the weights. After seeing the results and progress from trying it out, I was motivated enough to incorporate weight training as a permanent part of my personal fitness regime. I’ve been exploring different methods and my boyfriend even got me some kettle-bells.

What was the biggest challenge that you faced during the initial stages of your efforts to get fit?

I dreaded waking up early in the morning to exercise; I just couldn’t find enough energy in the beginning. I wasn’t used to it and drastic change is hard. I’d sometimes cheat on my diet and snack late at night even though I knew it would get in the way of my goal to lose weight. It’s always a struggle in the beginning especially when you don’t see the results immediately. The key thing is to stay focused and continue to make progress; you will develop discipline if you stay

committed. If you want your results to last, you have to be patient and create the habit of working out first, making small and achievable goals for yourself along the way.

What are some lessons that you have learnt from your pursuits of health and fitness?

In staying fit, as with every aspect of life, smart planning is a very important step once you’ve set your goals. When you make it an effort to plan and prepare your meals ahead of time, you are less likely to make bad last minute food choices. The same rule applies with not just exercise, but work as well. With a proper workout plan or work schedule, you utilize all the time you spend at the gym or office because you are always on track with what you need to do rather than idle or procrastinate.

There is a plethora of diet and fitness plans out there; some beneficial, some dangerous. Are there any that you would like to warn people against and any that you would recommend?

Most diets are about eating less food or restricting you to certain kinds of food. It may be a quick fix, but if you want to lose weight and keep it off, focus more on creating healthy eating habits. No diet plan would work without good nutrition. Toss out the junk food and opt for natural, non-processed foods instead. Every individual is built differently, with different fitness goals, so there isn’t any particular exercise plan that I would say can work for everyone. The best thing to do if you’re starting out is to hire a personal trainer who can help tailor your workouts according to your fitness goals.

Please state your personal top five fitness tips for the food-loving Malaysian. 1. Being healthy is a lifestyle choice and a state of mind more than anything else. It isn’t a temporary diet or a quick-fix ab workout out of a magazine. I would tell anyone embarking on a journey to a healthier self, that it will take time and a lot of commitment. Be patient with yourself and never forget what motivated you to start the change. 2. Fruits are fast food, and umpteen times better for you than the variety that comes with a large soda. Take a stroll over to a local farmer’s market and stock up on fresh fruits and veggies. I go to the one in Bangsar on Sunday evenings sometimes, after a happy cheat meal of banana leaf rice. 3. Get past the stereotype that it’s “taboo” to bring your lunch from home. Don’t be embarrassed to be healthy. Bring your lunch out with your colleagues and with them to the mamak if you still want to be social. Think of the cash you’re saving too! 4. Cook in batches about once or twice a week. It may take you three to four hours, but it’s more efficient than cooking for one hour everyday. You can also prepare a consistent, well balanced meal of protein, complex carbohydrates, and vegetables. 5. Know the difference between being bored and being hungry! Avoid eating when you’re full. Try to divide your meals in a day to at least three; eating one or two very large meals in a day really messes with your energy levels and metabolism, not to

mention other negative health effects.

The three health and fitness-related myths/misconceptions that you wish to debunk:

1. Working out on an empty stomach does not mean your body is going to burn fat. Having a little pre-workout snack 30 to 60 minutes before your workout gives you the energy to go longer and harder, which boosts your burn. 2. A lot of people think that the fastest way to lose weight is by cutting out carbs. Carbs give you energy, fuels your muscles and helps with your blood sugar levels. If carbs are too low for too long of a time, energy levels will drop, cravings will be become extremely intense (which might inevitably lead to binge eating!), and your resting metabolic rate will plummet. The only food you need to cut out is junk food! 3. Crunches alone isn’t going to give you abs. Doing abdominal exercises can strengthen the ab muscles but to burn fat, you need to do cardio. Until you clean up your diet, you will never see the lusted after six pack.

You are known for having a very fit body, but we’re sure that it doesn’t come easy. Could you share with our readers how you achieved it and what you have to do to maintain it?

First, you have to find the right balance between work, fun, and family time. That already takes a lot of effort because it’s so easy to get caught up in one or the other. Prioritizing what’s most important to you first is key when it comes to managing your time, because unless you’re one of the lucky few, you won’t have time to do everything you want to. Discipline comes hand in hand with willpower and determination. It’s important to reevaluate your goals every so often to make sure you’re still challenging yourself and taking note of any improvement or deficiency in your performance. There is no room for complacency in terms of goal setting - when you achieve one, it’s time to make another if you hadn’t already. However, nothing great is achieved without enthusiasm!

Sometimes you got to cut lose and, not put too much pressure on yourself so that you’ll enjoy it. It’s just as important to set small, achievable goals especially during the beginning of your fitness journey, as it is to set big ambitious long term goals. I engage in cardiovascular exercise three days a week and resistance training between three to four times a week, sometimes combining cardio and weights on the same day. A typical workout session for me starts out with high-intensity interval training to get the heart rate up and then weight training to build up lean muscles. I maintain my diet by preparing my own meals so I can control what I put in my food and its proportions.

What are some of the hardest parts of that regime?

Mainly eating out. Oh, the pleasures of eating out! It makes healthy eating so much harder with all the food choices out there at various restaurants and local hawkers. It’s so easy to be tempted.

Have you overdone workout or diet routine that affected your body negatively? Or are you naturally able to keep things balanced?

There are people who are so addicted to exercising that they feel compelled to workout and struggle with guilt and anxiety when they fail to do so. The same negatively applies with what they eat too and this sort of compulsive, insecure behavior is very unhealthy in the long run. Rest days and “cheat meals” are important aspects of healthy living and everyone who’s into fitness should be aware of that. There’s nothing wrong with having a strong habit of exercise, but when it becomes destructive to your mental well being and the rest of your life, you really have a sense check your priorities. I proudly pig out on fastfood (with extra fries) once a week because you know what? it makes me happy! Extra hot sauce people, it’s to die for.

“A lot of people think that the fastest way to lose weight is by cutting out carbs, but Junk food is The only food you need to cut out!” 060

BEAUTY HURTS THE HEALTH HAZARDS OF MODERN GROOMING

Brought to you by

The modern woman is plastered, jabbed, stripped, strapped, slapped on, and colored to fit the modern idea of beauty. But while there is nothing wrong with dolling up to look good and feel confident, keep in mind that there are more than just financial consequences to your quest for beauty – especially if you overdo it. COSMETICS

HAIR STYLING PRODUCTS

• Decades of cancer research have indicated that people who used hair dyes had an increased risk of bladder and breast cancer, as well as cancers of the blood and bone marrow. Other health risks related to hair dyes are allergic reactions leading to severe skin and eye irritation. Hair dyes can also actually cause hair loss in some people. • Hair straightening products contain formaldehyde, a chemical that is considered a carcinogen (cancer-causing substance). This strong smelling chemical that is used in building materials is known to cause severe skin allergies, blindness if it gets in the eyes and breathing problems. According to the National Cancer Institute, this substance is also known to increase the risk of nose and lung cancer.

• Mascara, eye shadow and foundation have reportedly been found to contain chemicals that are linked to conditions such as cancer, infertility, and hormone imbalance. • Fragrances and perfumes have often contributed to mild allergies, like sneezing or watery eyes. Aside from these general irritations, other contact dermatitis can trigger eczema. • Contact dermatitis, which presents itself as inflamed skin, may also result from an allergy or irritant brought on by perfume. In more severe cases, cosmetic contact dermatitis can trigger eczema, a chronic skin disorder marked by itchy rashes.

UNDERGARMENTS

TIGHT FITTING APPARELS

• Skinny jeans may have rose to fame recently, but the health risks associated with it has also made the headlines. Skin-tight denim is known to increase the chances of developing vaginal thrush due to poor ventilation. Fitting yourself into these tight jeans can also cause nerve compression, leading to tingling or numb thighs. • Corsets that may place too much pressure on the stomach area can often lead to heartburn, breathing problems, and even digestive problems. Conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome can also be worsened by such restrictive underwear.

HEELS

• High heels cause poor posture, places too much pressure on your joints, and leads to health risks such as arthritis, hammer toes, back pain, as well as knee and tendon injuries.

• Women who wear ill-fitting bras can cause tissue damage to breast tissue and may result in chronic pain. Other health problems include breathing difficulties, poor posture, skin irritation, circulation problems and even irritable bowel syndrome. • Donning synthetic fabrics encourages yeast infection, increasing the risk of vaginal thrush and the spread of bacteria, leading to urinary tract infections.

HAIR REMOVAL PRODUCTS

• Hair removal creams contain alkaline or acidic compositions that affect the protein structure in hair. • With shaving, there is a risk for nicks, ingrown hairs, and the dreaded razor burn. Rusty blades may cause irritation or infection. Shaving can also cause folliculitis, an infection in the hair follicles. • Waxing can cause irritation and inflammation, especially if you have a reaction to the chemicals in the wax, and, if the wax used is too hot, there’s also a risk of burning the skin.

Move it, work it

STRETCH IT STRETCHES TO DO AT YOUR WORK DESK

NECK

Sitting at your work desk for nearly 8 hours a day is going to take a toll on your health. Weight gain, increased cholesterol levels, heart disease - these are some of the problems that can arise. Instead of just sitting around, keep your blood moving and your muscles warm with these quick and easy exercises to relax your body at work.

THE HEADBANGER – Close your eyes and drop your chin down to your chest. Circle your neck slowly. Do 3-5 rolls in one direction and another 3-5 rolls in the opposite direction. Keep your shoulders relaxed and don’t hurry through areas of tightness.

THE SHRUGGER – Breathe in deeply and shrug your shoulders, lifting them high up to your ears. Hold your breath for a few seconds, then release and drop your shoulders. Move your head up and down, and side-by-side slowly. Repeat several times.

THE APE – Stand up and place your hands on your desk with your wrist facing the computer and your fingers touching the edge of the desk. Flatten your palms as much as possible. Back off if you feel pain.

THE SLAPPER – Spread your fingers apart as much as you can and hold for 5 seconds. Then clench your fist as tight as possible and hold for 5 seconds. Repeat this several times.

064

WRISTS/HANDS

THE DRILL – Roll your wrists regularly – 10 times clockwise and 10 times counter clockwise per session. This helps prevent Carpal Tunnel Syndrome in those who spend long hours typing.

SHOULDER

THE ARM GESTURE – Rest your wrist on your shoulder and place one hand under your elbow. Then, lift your elbow and stretch it across your chest and hold on to that position for 15-30 seconds. Don’t rotate your body as you stretch. Relax and slowly return to the starting position, then repeat with the other arm.

THE WALL PUSHER – Stand one feet away from the wall, place your hands on the wall and push yourself back and forth. This non-intensive workout gets your blood flowing as your stretch your shoulders.

THE ARMPIT SHOWOFF – Lift one arm and bend it behind your head, then place your other hand on the bent elbow to help stretch your upper arm and shoulder. Hold on to the position for 15-30 seconds and repeat the stretch with the other arm.

THE SITTING CRANE – While sitting up straight on a chair, place your hands at the back of your thigh and gently pull your leg towards your chest. Hold the position for 30 seconds. You’ll feel the tension in your lower back and the upper part of your buttock. Relax and slowly return to the starting position then repeat the steps with the other leg.

BACK

THE DESK DIVER – Hold on to the edge of your desk and slowly push your chair back while you’re looking at the floor with your head in between your arms. Then, slowly pull yourself back towards your desk. Repeat 15 times.

THE OPTIMIST – While sitting up straight or standing, stretch your arms overhead while your fingers are interlocked. Turn the palms to the ceiling as you lift your chin up, tilt your head back and gaze up at the ceiling. Inhale, exhale, release. After 10 seconds, extend the right hand higher than the left and then the left higher than the right.

LEGS

THE DROP KICKER – Position your chair away from your desk and place your heel on the back rest of a chair or on your desk. As you’re sitting up straight, bend forward just until you feel a gentle stretch in the back of your leg. Flex your foot for a few seconds, and then point it. Bend forward a bit farther and flex your foot again. Hold on for 10 seconds and repeat on the other side. This eases the hamstrings and lower back.

THE ODDBALL – While holding on to the desk, grab one of your ankles and pull it towards your buttock. Make sure you maintain an upright position, keeping your back straight and your knees parallel to one another. Hold for 15-30 seconds. Repeat the steps with your other leg.

THE LEVITATOR – Grab the seat of your chair to brace yourself and stretch your legs out. Flex and point your toes out five times. Release and repeat.

THE MUSICAL MIND Energizing the Body and Mind with the Tomatis Method

066

The saying “No pain, no gain.” is usually true when it comes to fixing, healing, or enhancing oneself. But did you know that the pleasurable experience of listening to music can also energize your spirits, heal your body and jumpstart your brain?

MUSIC

OVER.MATTER

The Tomatis Method utilizes a system of sound sensory stimulation to enhance the brain’s capabilities. This method provides the brain with new information to facilitate better listening, learning, understanding, speaking, balancing and more.

What is the Tomatis Method?

Dr. Tomatis created a complex electronic filtering and gating system, named the “Tomatis Electronic Ear.” This sophisticated electronic device employs certain frequencies of music to retrain a client’s ears. The brain and nervous systems regain their balance, that critical balance necessary to achieve personal development and success. The recipient hears the music through a special headphone. Sound is transmitted through air via the ear canal. It is also transmitted by a vibration at the top of the headset. This vibration is called bone conduction. Tomatis’ work indicates that while music alone can provide healing in the short term, music that has been programmed specifically with the Electronic Ear initiates long-term change or improvements. There are two kinds of devices: • The Solisten device is small, portable, for clients who cannot come to the centre. But it is recommended that it is used for the first session. • The TAP - placed in the centre with more function for filtering and a mother voice used for the listening therapy. The Tomatis Method operates on the plasticity of the neural circuits involved in the decoding and analysis of sounds, as well as on those involved in motricity, balance, and coordination. As such, the Tomatis Method can help children develop compensatory strategies to deal with and manage their learning difficulties and language disorders as well as other issues. THE BLUE HOUSE A FASHION TIME CAPSULE OF AN ICON

Inspired by the Mexican artist Frida Kahlo and her lover, the theme of this fashion shoot exhibits a mood that is sombre yet muted with pops of colors. SETTING THE PACE RUBAQ GRACES RUNWAYS WITH AUTHENTIC STYLE Malaysia is home to rich collection of cultures and heritage, yet only a rare few have made it to the world stage, and Rubaq is a shining example of such success. An emerging brand looking to make its grand debut, Rubaq is ready to showcase its exquisite designs on the world stage. For renowned local batik authority Prof Zaharah, it was only a matter of time before she eventually decided to seriously market her creations. And since she established Rubaq with the help of her daughters about a year ago, her iconic creations have already bagged them invites to showcase their latest collection on the runway at two prestegious world class fashion events - The New Kuala Lumpur Fashion Week 2013 and the Islamic Fashion Festival 2013. And while Malaysian batik may not be new to us, Rubaq has made sure to set its bars high, producing impeccable works of wearable art. Unlike mass-produced batik, the good folks behind Rubaq pride themselves with their unwavering commitment to the art of batik, as well as an uncompromising attention to detail and quality in every piece that they produce. As such, every piece of batik by Rubaq is guaranteed to be distinct from the rest. “Our collection exhibits a sophisticated upbeat note that will appeal across the age spectrum and transcend status quo.” said Prof Zaharah, Co-Founder & Designer of Rubaq. “Our inspirations and color palettes portray a feast of arty paints, from creative and innovative experimentation with wax and tie-dye manipulation.”

passion for sensible

Fashion The atypical guide

While the media is mercilessly manipulating the body image of billions of women worldwide, we are being taught how to match jewellery and accessories to our faces and underwear by socalled fashion police and gurus. What happens when you jump straight to M and miss out A-L, is a whole population who does it all wrong, but in the right colors. Being born female is being born into a life of hardships. First world hardships, that is. Put aside our monthly cycle that runs like clockwork, ensuring that any living organism that comes within arms’ reach is vanquished like an ant under a boot. Put aside our miraculous ability to store a creature within our bodies for 9 months, which again miraculously manages to crawl out and grows bigger and bigger and one day decides that it hates you. Put aside all of that, and in my humble opinion, the misery of keeping up with fashion trends is severely underrated. Before I proceed any further, I feel that in the age where humans have been replaced by stick insects on the runway, a disclaimer is required: With any reference to body size in this article, kindly look the word up in the dictionary. Thin is not slim, as plump is different from obese. Now, I would like to proclaim that apart from the typical fashion dos and don’ts, there are other boo boos that are conveniently overlooked or ignored in our society. It’s so easy to get caught up in the little details while forgetting the bigger picture.

086

“Whatever you do, don’t pretend that you can still wear clothes from your childhood.”

Fat girls, don’t dress like you’re skinny Before anyone crucifies me, I don’t mean that fat girls shouldn’t dress up. By all means, knock yourself out. What I do mean however, is that fat girls shouldn’t kid themselves into buying Baby Gap sizes. Either embrace your curves, or do something about it if you don’t like it. Whatever you do, don’t pretend that you can still wear clothes from your childhood. Apart from causing visual pollution, it looks as comfortable as a wedgie. In fact, you probably have one right now.

Skinny girls, don’t dress like you can flaunt it Unless you have had “work” done or enviable natural assets. Otherwise, you just look like a dried up tree in the desert, with a couple of vultures hanging on the branches. There are plenty of fashion items that complement a thin physique, and tops that bare your

airport runway (which won’t even pass safety standards by the way) are not one of them. On a side note, you can also stop fishing for compliments by complaining about how fat you are while posting up 100 grainy pictures of yourself with a webcam, thankyouverymuch.

Cosmetic contact lenses The ones that make your irises extra black and extra large: it’s creepy, and worthy of a Japanese ghost movie. Did someone miss the memo? Society worships big EYES, not IRISES. Fake double-eyelids and makeup do wonders to create the illusion of having big eyes, and society doesn’t want to relive the day they watched The Ring. Also, as much as you aspire to be one of your favorite characters in Japanese anime, you’re not Japanese and you’re not in an anime, are you? If you are, millions of men living in their parents’ basements await your call.

WHAT YOU THINK YOU LOOK LIKE

088

WHAT YOU ACTUALLY LOOK LIKE

Glasses without glasses. I will poke you in the eye with a knife and tell everyone it was an accident.

Dressing up while slimming down I was almost a victim of myself by eye-gouging. A middle-aged potato managed to shimmy into Calista Flockhart’s gym outfit and surprise, surprise, her strap snapped. Thankfully, she caught her top in time before things came a-flyin’. What did go a-flyin’ though were the long manes of women who refused to tie their hair up while they bounced about (with half of it sticking to their necks with sweat - gotta stay classy), and my booger as my nose was assaulted by walking, talking perfumeries.

Cakes of makeup enough to open a bakery We all can see where your makeup crusts, where it ends on your neck, and how it flakes whenever you make violent movements. It is reminiscent of the final scene in Death Becomes Her, where Meryl Streep and Goldie Hawn break into pieces. Not only is it bad for your skin, in your head you’d look ugly without all that paint, when in reality

you actually look perfectly normal. Doesn’t it seem ridiculous when you show up to an event where you can’t have makeup on (e.g. outdoor activities, slumber parties if people still have those), and your own friends can’t recognize you? And yes, the correct response is to believe that you ARE ugly and to pile even MORE makeup on. Don’t get me wrong - SOME makeup may be necessary, but like the saying goes, less is more.

Bad toes hanging out of peeptoe shoes In the employee handbook where I used to work, it was stated that only two and a half toes is the maximum allowed shown in peeptoe shoes. As incredulous as it sounds, that was the only policy I was grateful for, as I have seen one too many ungroomed, overly long toes sticking out of the gaps like worms gasping for air. Don’t let your toes get stepped on by other people, or worse, yourself.

Last but not least, deal with your body hair It is one thing to be feminist (or to think that you’re a feminist), but it’s another thing

altogether to bare your armpit hair in all its glory while dressed to the nines. Trim (or mow) your lady garden or I guarantee it’ll be playing peekaboo in your pair of Daisy Dukes. Separate your unibrow into two, remove unruly leg hair before putting on a skirt, and eliminate your beard with methods that don’t leave stubble behind. Sandpaper is useful, but not for kissing. You’re welcome. P.S. - Although not a fashion item per se, something that has never been in fashion and will never be in fashion is fake foreign accents. Your friends know that you’ve lived in Malaysia all your life, so a trip to London or completing a few years of studies in the States doesn’t make you a white person. It just makes you sound like a stupid Asian person who thinks speaking like a white one will elevate your social standing. The only standing that should happen, is you at the corner with a cone hat with the word ‘dunce’ on it because you should be very ashamed of yourself indeed.

This may not be the best example of ugly long toes sticking out of peeptoe shoes, but they stare rudely enough at other people to be bad manners.

Number The tiny black

A WALK THROUGH THE HISTORY OF THE LITTLE BLACK DRESS

090

The 1970s wasn’t too kind to the little black dress. With the emergence of the hippie movement and tie-dye clothing, the little black dress was out on the back burner. It was not until the late 1970s that when the punk rock era revived, the little black dress was back under the limelight. The colour black itself became more popular.

Then came the 30s with dresses of softer, feminine cuts. Full, flowing hems once again fell below the calf. Betty Boop, the brunette bombshell cartoon character who made her first appearance in the 1930s was also known for her very own black dress, one that remained naughtily well above the knee.

1980s

In the 1920s, Gabrielle “Coco” Bonheur Chanel popularised the little black dress. Vogue declared it, “Chanel’s Ford” because of its simplicity in style and the fact that it would soon find much favour among the masses. And so it did. The little black flapper dress also took this era by storm.

1930s

1920s

An era known for its corsets, bonnets, top hats, bustles and petticoats, the 19th century was also famed for the black dress; though it was considered faux pas unless you were in mourning. Wearing black was accepted as a symbol of respect to the dead but it wasn’t until artist John Singer Sargent painted the portrait ‘Madame X’ that the colour black was taken out of a mournful state.

1970s

PRE - 1920s

Throughout the years, it has taken us to hot dates, job interviews, lame parties, weddings and funerals. It’s been a part of some of life’s biggest events. The zenith of elegance in any woman’s wardrobe, the little black dress, has stood the test of time. This wardrobe staple for every woman of taste signals the present day concept of luxury and modernity.

The little black dress burst back into the fashion scene in the 1980s. This time, it came accented with shoulder pads, taffeta, and ruffles; the 1980s brought the little black dress back into vogue. In the mid-eighties, Donna Karan was to be known as New York’s reincarnation of Chanel – simplicity, elegance and attention to the female figure had her influence breakthrough the 1990s.

The turn of the millennium saw the little black dress in the forms of baby doll party dresses, maxi-dresses and tight pencil dresses. With the beginning of a new millennium, the trends returned to the body conscious clothing. The little black dress became a power uniform – women having to juggle a career, family, and a busy social calendar.

It was the 1960s and the little black dress has been included in nearly every designer’s collection. In 1961, French fashion designer, Hubert de Givenchy and a little star called Audrey Hepburn made it a classic, in what might be filmdom’s most famous little black dress in the romantic comedy film Breakfast at Tiffany’s.

2010s

Many of the little black dresses that made its way into the 90s were spaghetti-strapped. The grunge culture of this era had women pairing the little black dress with sandals and even combat boots. The dress was simple and tight fitting just like Posh Spice’s signature mini-dress. There is no doubt that little black dress ruled the 90s.

1960s

1950s

Post-war, the fashion world took a new turn with as fabric restrictions had been lifted. As the Hollywood movie scene began to make its emergence, many designers featured the little black dress in their films. It was during this time that wherever Hollywood went, fashion followed. Although the “Subway Dress” from the movie, The Seven Year Itch was an iconic piece, Marilyn Monroe gave the little black dress more curves than a Formula One track in Hollywood flicks such as Some Like It Hot and The Asphalt Jungle.

2000s

1990s

1940s

By the 1940s, the little black dress popularity rose due to the restrictions of the war – it became and aspect of rationing when the majority of fabric was directed toward the war effort. Women found it easy to accessorise with and embraced it for its effortlessness, making it the most sought after attire to wear for any occasion. Minimalism and practicality prevailed during the war years.

No other clothing item has withstood the test of time quite like the little black dress. These days, the little black dress is the definition of sexy simplicity. Harnessing a definite 80s feel, this ever-sexy little number has made a comeback with velvet panelling and bodysculpting shape.

APPLICATION

DO’S & DON’TS

DO’S • Keep your application simple. The agency will look out for important points such as your looks, your height and stats (for women, bust/waist/hips and for men, suit jacket size and waist size), your location, age, eye and hair color, and maybe the size of your feet. • If you’re currently attached with a booking agency somewhere, say so. • If you have extensive professional modeling or acting experience, say so. Keep it short and sweet. • For your profile shots, get the best possible shots to be sent are the ones with you appearing in prestigious, paid modelling work, the kind that the agency does. They beat snapshots hands down! • If you don’t have those shots, call the agency and ask for their preference. It’s wise to try an inexpensive approach first although paying a little extra will be a good investment. Perhaps, if all else fails and you’re still determined to pursue modelling, you should make an investment in professional photography. • If you don’t get a response within a reasonable time frame (about a couple of weeks), you probably aren’t going to. At that point, you can think about trying again, but by doing something differently, like sending different pictures or personally making an appointment to meet them personally instead of just making an impersonal mail submission. DON’Ts • It’s just like a job interview so don’t bring your other half, dad, mom and the tiny tot your mom is babysitting. And baby strollers? Don’t even think about it! This not American Idol so keep your entourage at home • Never argue with a booking agent. To succeed in this industry (and any other for that matter), you have got to take criticism with grace. If an agent passes you on, don’t question them. Thank them for their time, don’t be disgruntled, and move on to the next appointment. It’s not the end of your career. • Don’t waste your time on “TFP (Time for Prints) /TFCD (Time for a CD)” shoots unless you are certain the photographer is very well qualified to produce commercial test pictures. • If you need to call the agency, do it yourself. Never get your parents (unless you’re underage), some “manager” nobody has ever heard of or, worse still, your boyfriend/girlfriend call for you. • Don’t ever be absent or late for shoots. Be considerate. The agency takes a lot of time to get their stuff together – from gathering the team to planning the entire shoot. So if you want to impress the right people, then treat their time as valuable.

Nomads The urban

camel active draws inspiration from the Middle East camel active has once again released spectacular series of images that truly does justice to

their diverse Spring/Summer 2013 collection. Titled “Urban Nomads”, the collection is aptly presented amidst the breathtaking desert backdrop of the historic Kingdom of Morocco, oozing generous doses of rugged adventure that the fabled brand is known for. Inspired by desert travellers, camel active turns to a global blend of designs: Complementary patterns and colours as well as material combinations and accessories are worked up. A hint of safari with ethnic graphics and regionally influenced prints along with dip and over-dyed effects in interplay with vintage military features give the look its authenticity. They really come into their own in Ikat patterns, photo prints as aquarelles and linear graphics. When it comes to the materials, camel active relies on airy qualities: Fine cotton is further developed with seersucker effects and ultralight techno cottons. Linen and linen mixes have also been placed in the focus of the collection. Due to innovative open surfaces

such as marled and mouline, knits are also wearable in the warmer seasons. Patterns are created here by switching between thick and thin yarns while weaving. The extra sweats workmanship on the cuffs and open edges adds attractive details – contrasting materials used in the finest manner. The collection presents itself authentically in earthy tones from sand to off-white. Sunburned terracotta, curcuma and saffron add accents. Bleached-out green tones in olive, khaki and pale round out the Sahara look. But blue tones play a key role this season and present themselves more diversely than ever: From sky to deep blue, the colors alternate with strong ultra-blue and the classic navy. One thing is quickly clear: Blue is the new black.

In contrast, the new vibrant accents mellow yellow and vivid red prove how multifaceted the world of the Urban Nomads is. In Spring/Summer 2013, camel active once again manages to convincingly convey the modern interpretations of its roots. True design for real men meets high-quality materials – all of which is typical for the Urban Nomads look. In Malaysia, camel active is sold in exclusive camel active stores in Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, Petaling Jaya, Kajang, Seri Kembangan, Kuantan, and in camel active outlets in all leading department stores and major fashion retailers.

The combination of colors and patterns seen during long trips through the Middle East is reflected in the eventful lives of the camel active Urban Nomads.

Crime in fashion A Catwalk of Scum and Villainy

Criminals, gangsters, terrorists, villains – they are the outcasts of civilized society. We are at times appalled and yet strangely fascinated by the actions and atrocities they commit, the sordid lives they lead, and the often inevitable incarceration or punishments they suffer. And this fascination extends to their attire and outward appearance. The clothes that they wear, the accessories they carry, the cockiness of their attitude as they strut along without a seeming care. We all want to look cool, awesome, and earn the respect of our peers (as well as getting the ladies to wet their knickers). Look at me! Is the cry of every human being, to be acknowledged; to be noticed, to be envied. And one of the best ways is to stand out from the masses, to distinguish oneself from the sheep. Fashion is all about individualism as well as looking good. Especially if one is being edgy, rebellious, and a little dangerous. And what’s more dangerous than dressing up or looking like those that society fears and shuns? I’m talking about those paragons of vice and unlawfulness - like the mobster, the gangster, the criminal, the fascist and even the terrorist. Fashion can also sometimes move from the mainstream to darker climes where it becomes embraced as a symbol that distinguishes a group from the rest of society. But then this symbol of defiance becomes trendy as the mainstream latches on to it and elevates

it as a representation of edginess, danger and ultimately coolness. Throughout history, nondescript items of clothing, apparel and accessories have been embraced by scoundrels, scum and villains and been reborn as stylish accouterments of popular culture. These included trench coats, hats, caps, glasses, even and even traditional scarves. Here are a few examples of the interrelationship between the styles and trends of the underworld and how these can sometimes become mainstream fashion trends in popular culture.

The American Mafia

Organized crime took off in a big way in the United States when Congress passed the Prohibition Act in 1920. This led to boot-leg smuggling of alcohol, and the rise of the Mob, especially in cities like Chicago. The infamous ‘St Valentine’s Day Massacre’ catapulted little-

known Alponse Capone into criminal folklore. Grainy black and white photos of Al Capone, Bugsy Moran and other Chicago mobsters set the stage for the mobster ‘look’ for years to come.

The Mob ‘Look’ of the 1920s-1930s

Pinstriped or one tone colored suits that often fit snuggly around the shoulders where there was very little padding used. Because fabrics were heavier back then they often hung or draped nicely on the body frame. Any mobster worth his salt wore a fedora hat. These often came in shades of white, gray or dark. Along with their dapper form fitting suits your typical bootlegging mobster also wore colorful ties and bows. Trousers back then were preferably slim, though not too tight. Killers, thugs and thieves they certainly were, but at least they dressed snappily while they were about it.

“The zoot suit also came to prominence during this time. It was basically a men’s suit where the waist was set higher, with wide-legged and tight-cuffed trousers.”

The Mob ‘Look’ of the 1940s

Then came the 1940s and the era of Lucky Luciano, Meyer Lansky, Vito Genovese and others. These were the glory days of the Mafia or ‘Cosa Nostra’ as it came to be known. Luciano reorganized the Mafia into the ‘Commission’, regulating its members and increasing cooperation between rival crime families. This ushered in an unprecedented era of prosperity for the mafia allowing its reach to spread into every corner of America. By this period pinstriped suits double breasted jackets and suspenders were the rage with trouser legs cut wider than in the 1920s. The zoot suit also came to prominence during this time. It was basically a men’s suit where the waist was set higher,

104

with wide-legged and tight-cuffed trousers. The upper part consisted of a long coat with rather broad lapels along with widened and padded shoulders. Hip-hop and rap artists like Snoop Dog and Jodeci adopted the mobster godfather ‘chic’ during the mid and late 90s as an embrace of all things stylish and glamorous about the early Mafia stereotype, most strongly depicted in the Godfather films as well as Scarface.

The Yakuza Of Japan

The Yakuza holds the distinction of being the largest criminal organization in the world with an estimated 103,000 members. They’re also one of the oldest with traditions dating back to feudal era Japan. Originally composed of the

dregs and undesirables of feudal Japanese society such as morticians, and even foreigners like Koreans; the Yakuza have now grown to become the dark side of Japanese society, with strong ties to right wing politicians and ideas. Until relatively recently it was even viewed as a legal organization by the Japanese government. The Yakuza, depending on how much they’re willing to spend, would often go out wearing sharp pin striped suits, shades or sun glasses and trench coats. They pretty much emulated the style of crime lord and mobsters in the United States, probably because of watching too many Hollywood crime films. As a result, their look seems almost out of place in current times, harkening back to the rat-pack style of the 1950s, except in place of hats they had longish pomaded hair.

Full Body Tattoo

But what really distinguishes the Yakuza from their American counterparts was their penchant for full body tattoos. These beautiful multi-colored works of living art are not only a Yakuza’s pride and joy but serves to delineate his status within the organization. Depictions of dragons, birds, flowers, cherry blossoms and mountainous landscapes interspersed with abstract designs flow across every inch of skin save for their faces. Yes, including their genitals. Unlike modern tattoos using needle guns, the Yakuza tattoos are applied with traditional techniques such as bamboo needles inserted by hand. The process is long and laborious and for the recipient, painful. Yet it is a mark of a Yakuza’s pride to be able to sit through the procedure without flinching. Imagine folks, the pain as one’s scrotum is pricked with a bamboo needle for hours and your testicles manhandled by a grizzled old man.Now that’s manly.

The irezumi tattoo brush may inflict a lot of pain, but it has created some of the most breathtaking tatoos ever seen.

The Chav‘Look’

Burberry had to act and attempted to distance itself from the Chav association by changing its marketing image. The brand has undergone an image makeover. Gone are the famous plaid caps for one. Burberry now targets a higher end market with sleek dapper suits with their iconic plaids sewn in.

Depending on the season, male Chavs may slip the ends of their track suit legs inside their socks, or even wear a pair of trousers and then a pair of track suit pants on top. Female Chavs (sometimes referred to as Chavettes) are as raucous as their male counterparts, and with equally bad taste in fashion. Other than the usual short skirts and t-shirts, they also wear tracksuits like their men do.

The Chavs Of Great Britain

In terms of their dress sense, personally it leaves a lot to be desired. The thing about Chavs is that they adopt a manner of dress that easily distinguishes them from the rest of society. Firstly, they are often attired in sportswear, usually tracksuits.

Burberry and Chavs

Chav accessories include either fake or genuine ‘bling’ or jewelry – always in the most garish and ostentatious style possible. And most importantly, an item from the brand Burberry, most often it’s signature plaid cap. More than any other accessory, the Burberry cap came to symbolize ‘Chav-dom’ and the brand become synonymous with this social phenomenon – to its regret. Due to its association the brand suffered. Sales in the UK went down almost by half. It came to a point that a few UK malls began forbidding patrons wearing Burberry caps and hoodies from entering their premises.

106

Anyone who lives anywhere near or in the UK or loves anything British would know about them. Probably also have a few opinions about them – Chavs that is. Those of us living elsewhere may be wondering “eh?” The term ‘Chav’ refers to a distinct low income group or underclass in Britain characterized by love of cheap booze and cigarettes, flashy accessories, rowdiness, and football. It’s believed to be from the Romani word ‘Chavi’ or child. To the British public at large, Chavs are seen as often being jobless, living on benefits and spending their days in front of the television or breeding more children to gain more child benefits. Younger Chavs are often viewed as social delinquents, engaging in petty vandalism and anti-social behaviour. Older Adult Chavs are regarded at the minimum as scroungers and at worst, criminals. The 2012 London riots (where a Malaysian student was punched, then ‘Good Samaritans’ came along, helped him up and stole his stuff) were blamed primarily on Chavs.

“Burberry had to act and attempted to distance itself from the Chav association by changing its marketing image.”

Skinheads

Several common motifs can generally be said to identify the skin head fashion trend. All of which reflected their roots in an industrial working class background. Their clothes could stand the wear and tear of blue collar work or the rough and tumble of a bar fight after a hard day. Among the most obvious traits, males shave their heads - keeping a close cropped style often to the point of being bald. They usually prefer to wear jeans and white undershirts or wifebeaters with a jacket. Suspenders are also optional. Footwear usually involves heavy boots, the kind that one stomps with.

Neo-Nazi Skin heads

First of all, the terms Neo-Nazi and skinhead are not exactly interchangeable. There are in fact liberal leftist skinhead organisations and individuals such as the Skin Heads Against Racism and Prejudice (SHARP) based in America, as well as the Red and Anarchist Skinheads, who are opposed to Far-Right and Fascist ideas.

Odd as it may be, there are Malaysian Neo-Nazi’s too. And while they may not be as brutish as the original skinheads, they are far dafter than them.

107

STYLEFEATURE text Azral Hanan images various sources

Also being a Neo-Nazi today is not just confined to having an Aryan supremacy agenda. Neo-Nazi groups have sprouted in the former Eastern European states, many of them populated by Slovaks who in the past would have been victims of Nazi atrocities. There are even Neo-Nazi Mongolians (yes, I too was shocked on finding this out) who rail against the Chinese. Neo Nazi skinheads are primarily distinguished by the prominent display of fascist paraphernalia and badges that identify their affiliations. These generally come in the form of Nazi Swastika badges and tattoos for the European or German Neo-Nazi. In the US, symbols from the Confederacy may also proliferate like the Confederate flag. They also prefer darker coloured jackets and coats. Most importantly, they have to be the right ethnic group as that of the majority NeoNazis around them. For example a Greek member of ‘Golden Dawn’ (a fascist party in Greece) could get beaten up if he were to attend an all Aryan Neo-Nazi fest in Berlin – as they may mistake him for being a Turk or immigrant.

108

“I would like to be remembered as someone who made an impact on the Malaysian fashion industry, no matter how small that impact may be.”

Nevertheless, although the skinhead look is not exclusively a trait of racists and fascists, it has become so intertwined in the minds of the public and the media. There have been reports in Germany indicating that due to the ‘skinhead’ look being so synonymous with Neo-Nazis, many of them have abandoned it and adopted more conventional and mainstream modes of dress, style and appearance to blend in with the general populace.

Terrorists or Freedom Fighter ‘Chic’ The Keffiyeh

Back in the 80s, militancy and radicalism was already well known in the Middle East. The black and white Keffiyehscarf back then was mostly identified with Palestinian guerrilla fighters as well as the‘Intifada’ or Uprising in the Occupied Territories of 1987. Palestinians wore it wrapped around the head and face as they battled Israeli soldiers. The leader of the Palestinian Liberation Organisation (PLO) the late Yasser Arafat was famous for wearing a black and white Keffiyeh, in the more traditional manner on his head. Part guerrilla leader, part politician, part showman - it was his signature trademark. What the Keffiyeh definitely was NOT was a fashion accessory flouted by the rich and famous. But that’s all changed.

Today, you now have designers incorporating the black and white Keffiyeh and even the red and white Keffiyeh into their designs. Celebrities such as David Beckham, Colin Farrel, and Zayn Malik of ‘One Direction’ are wearing the black and white Keffiyeh openly with little to no fear of being accused of impersonating a terrorist sympathizer. In fact they welcome it since it is now trendy and cool and outré to wear a Keffiyeh. Edgy, with a hint of danger; but perfectly harmlessin reality. On the other hand, Senator John McCain’s daughter recently wore a Keffiyeh which drew considerable criticism from Republican commentators. But perhaps that was the point, draw attention by wearing such a controversial accessory, especially in the States. The problem, of course, is the issue of cultural appropriation. Where an aspect or object belonging to one community and tradition is appropriated and transformed into a product for mass consumption by popular culture – with no reparation made to the original source. Palestinians and Arabs in general may likely be pissed that the humble Keffiyeh that is part of their cultural heritage for generations is becoming a fashion trend where most of the profits will go to Western design companies. Such is the world we live in. Depending on

how the wind blows, given another 10 years, we may see Osama and Taliban style trends springing up among the urban, disenchanted Western youth of the future as well. At the end of it all, even the worst of us still want to look presentable to peers and strangers. Mobsters, gangsters, terrorists, and delinquents use their own distinctive aesthetic appeal and style attire to develop their own underworld chic. Despite being beyond the pale of legality and sometimes morality, their sneakiness, lack of scruple, and penchant for violence make these underworld archetypes irresistible iconic fashion representations of rebellion, edginess and danger. It is important to note that just because someone is dressed in a certain way does not mean they are members of a criminal organization. Or that they engage in criminal or illegal activity. These trends and styles are more like markers or identifiers used by members to indicate they belong to a particular group or affiliation. They also function to enable the wider society and media to identify them as such.

LAPTOP OF LUXURY LUVAGLIO PRESENTS THE MILLION DOLLAR LAPTOP In the film Indecent Proposal, billionaire Robert Redford spots luscious Demi Moore and husband Woody Harrelson. Smitten, he makes Woody an offer: one million dollars to sleep with your stunning wife. Now, imagine if Woody said yes, you can sleep with my hot wife every which way for one night if you pay me 1 million dollars, all with the consequent devastating love and trust issues, I will then squander to buy a laptop that in a few years will become outdated anyway! There aren’t enough face palms in the world to convey the absurdity. That’s what the makers of the Luvaglio laptop were hoping for - people daft enough to spend a million dollars on a laptop. By an untested company with no record of previous experience in computer manufacture, which had just been registered; headed by a CEO of unknown ability and experience who then announces their first product, is a million dollar machine that anyone can get at Low Yat for a few thousand ringgit or less. Alarm bells should be ringing.

122

London based Luvaglio unveiled the world’s most expensive laptop a few years back. Cleverly named the Luvaglio, it had a price a tag of one million dollars, and a distant second was the Tulip E-Go Diamond priced at USD 355,000. In terms of customization, this is the bee’s knees. Any potential buyer can order the laptop veneer made with wood, suede, or leather (probably from the skin of a baby’s bottom). A diamond functions as the power button and also security. The Luvaglio laptop was first mooted in 2007. Since then there has been no credible reports whatsoever of anyone actually ordering it, or even physically owning one. Nearly seven years later, the only thing that’s clear is that the laptop is either in pre-development hell and will never see the light of day, doesn’t

exist, or those who bought it are too ashamed to claim that they had. Anyone crazy enough to actually want to purchase said machine would need an invitation by the CEO Mr. Rohan Sinclair Luvaglia (yes, the company and laptop are named after him; modest man that he is) on the company website. It doesn’t help that the Luvaglio company website itself is rather basic for a company that is making high end luxury products targeted to the super rich. It requires a password to enter of course. But some of the links are dead. The whole thing feels almost, cheap. Clearly, Mr. Luvaglio also never, ever, envisioned or cared about the explosive growth of the iPad and others of similar ilk. www.luvaglio.com

Malaysian fans of motorsport racing got an opportunity to experience the glamorous high-octane lifestyle of a Vodafone McLaren Mercedes F1 driver. All thanks to the World’s No. 1 Scotch whisky brand’s exclusive access event, the Step Inside the Circuit campaign that was launched with the inauguration of the Johnnie Walker Circuit Lounge race party series here in Terminal 2 Skypark Subang, Malaysia. All they had to do was participate in an online contest organized by Johnnie Walker.

124

For contestant winner Rin Chan from Kuala Lumpur, Thursday the 21st of March is a day she will not soon forget. That was the day she got to meet motor racing superstar Jenson Button at the Cyberview Lodge face to face. The Vodafone McLaren Mercedes driver presented the excited Facebook contestant winner with a whole package of exclusive goodies and prizes as well as an invitation to experience for herself the elite world of VIP motorsport racing. To enhance the immersion into a dimension of opulence and sophistication, Rin Chan travelled in style to the Sepang International Circuit in her own private helicopter ride. This was then followed by a personally tailored VIP race weekend meeting with the Vodafone McLaren Mercedes F1 Team. She got to see and hear for herself, what it’s really like on and off the race track. But that’s not all. She and five others also stayed at a 5-Star hotel suite at The Club Saujana Resort that had been reserved for her for the duration of the race weekend. The glitz and glamour was completed with a chauffeured Mercedes Benz S class provided to transport Rin Chan and her friends to and from the Johnnie Walker Circuit Lounge race party itself. Of her incredible experience, contest winner Rin Chan exclaimed: “Words cannot describe how excited I was about winning this entire experience. It wasn’t enough that I had won all these amazing prizes, but to have Vodafone McLaren Mercedes F1 driver Jenson Button present them to me was truly the icing on the cake.” The event, held on Saturday March 2013 was a tour-de-force of entertainment, power and prestige. Guests arrived to a fabulously decked venue as the Terminal 2 Skypark was transformed into a magnificent customized décor setting of black and gold to play host to approximately 1000 distinguished guests. Those that attended included former

McLaren F1 driver David Coulthard and Brian McFadden of Westlife. Black Carpet host Serena C welcomed the privileged guests to sample the unique combination of tastes and flavors of local delicacies such as the Pandan and the Gula Melaka, all masterfully blended in various combinations at the Black Flavour Lab. An array of Johnnie Walker cocktails such as the fruity Circuit Lounge which was made with Johnnie Walker Black Label, the smoky Peat Perfect with Johnnie Walker Double Black, and the indulgent Fresh Gold with Johnnie Walker Gold Label Reserve, all provided variety and adventure to the discerning palate. No party is complete without music and dancing and the Johnnie Walker Circuit Lounge race party is no exception. The evening’s auditory overload was provided by an eclectic range of musical and turntable talents including the eccentric trio IMMA*BLEEP*YOUUP. After which there was the DJ Vogue Williams whose Irish beauty is matched by her mixing and scratching skills and rounding off a sensational evening was Ivan Gough the Australian electronic music groundbreaker and pioneer. Guests were also encouraged to show their support for the Johnnie Walker global responsible drinking initiative by pledging to never drink and drive by signing the JoinThePact.com interactive photo wall. To ensure they stayed safe and hydrated, bottles of Evian were provided. The Johnnie Walker Circuit Lounge expresses the prestige, power and performance of motorsport racing as a lifestyle of dynamism, exceptionalism, and charisma. Charles James Wright, Senior Brand Manager, Johnnie Walker Malaysia, shared: “The first ever Johnnie Walker Circuit Lounge signifies our intention to take the Step Inside the Circuit campaign to new heights this year with exclusive and unparalleled lifestyle experiences. Through our partnership with the Vodafone McLaren Mercedes F1 Team Johnnie Walker will continue to surprise and delight Malaysian fans with the most exciting insider access experiences that the world of elite motorsports has to offer.”

BEAUTIFUL SPEED THE LOTUS EXIGE S FLAUNTS ITS STRIPES The ultra-compact Lotus Elise may be viewed as too much of a trackbound weekend toy by casual enthusiasts. But its slightly larger sibling, the Lotus Exige S, may just present a more practical balance between track supremacy and road use. Known for cars with impeccable handling and power to weight ratio, Lotus has added aesthetic charm and lifestyle versatility to its appeal, thanks to the Exige S. Traditionally, the bulk of love for Lotus cars came almost completely from seasoned autoenthusiasts who are passionate about driving. These were the purists who understood the brand’s impeccable knack for making extremely effective sports cars. However, the move by Lotus to expand its niche with lifestyle appeal meant that up until the past decade or so, more people are beginning to look at Lotus cars not for what they would use them for, but for the pent-up potential that they were built with. The cherry topping is, of course, how equally stunning these symbols of engineering marvels look. Since its conception in 2000, the Lotus Exige S has evolved into a highly refined sports car, securing a special place in the hearts and minds of engineers, racing enthusiasts, and laymen alike. With a 3.5 litre capable of launching the car from naught to 100 in 4.0

126

seconds flat, that is indeed a very powerful engine in a very small car. In practice, the setup gives the Exige S the ability to beat the mighty 5.2 litre Audi R8 V10 by a hair in terms of acceleration. Top numbers like that off with the fact that the Exige S can take corners almost as well as a Porsche GT3, and you’ve got yourself unmatched price to true power ratio.

list of three distinct driving modes that the Bosch system can provide you with: Touring, Sport, and Race. The first mode will keep your car from skidding to avoid danger. The second gives you some leeway for mischief; a longer leash if you will. Depending on your skill level, the third will either turn you into a bull in a china shop or Kimi Raikkonen.

Keep in mind, though, that a comparison like the ones that we just made are strictly based on effective power here and ignoring the bells, whistles, and bling that the R8 and GT3 are equipped with. But since those cars cost about four times more than the Exige S, the very reasonable price tag on the Exige S more than justifies its worth. Of course, the Exige S isn’t exempted from having its own brand of fun features.

Described to be as nimble as a housefly by celebrity car reviewer Jeremy Clarkson, the Lotus Exige S packs a more powerful engine and more creature comfort than the zippy Elise while maintaining the potent handling that Lotus is revered for. So, be it the race tracks or city roads, the Lotus Exige S is more than ready to handle it all in style. The only question that remains is “Are you ready for it?”

There are many performance-tuned features in the Exige S, but one worth highlighting is the

Fay Hokulani, the host for the event lent an air of elegance and glamour to proceedings in an eye-catching and stylish Variante golden ensemble. Even the lighting at both venues that illuminated the revellers, patrons and guests were tinged yellow and gold for the occasion.

Indulge yourself with Johnnie Walker Gold Label Reserve as the perfect accompaniment and enhancement to life’s golden moments.

Many Penangites and even guests from outside the state and beyond took the opportunity to indulge themselves and get a closer look at what Johnnie Walker has to offer. As they made their way into both venues upon entry, the guests were greeted by stylishly pleasing displays of the Johnnie Walker Gold Label Reserve bottles at the service bars. Golden dressed Johnnie Walker Brand Ambassadors were on hand to guide the guests through a sensuous journey of immersion into the sublime Johnnie Walker Gold Label Reserve whisky experience. Engaging not only their minds, but also appealing to their senses and indulging in their desires. The sense of sight, touch, smell and taste are fully explored as the guests are mentored through a finer appreciation of the Johnnie Walker whisky brand phenomena. The guests and revellers were then feted with generous servings of luscious Johnnie Walker Gold Label Reserve whisky and as well as signature cocktails such as ‘Fresh Gold’ – a perennial crowd pleaser of zesty femininity served in exquisitely shaped champagne glasses. An array of brightly illuminated bottles full of golden rich goodness formed the centrepieces of the event. At midnight to celebrate the “Gold Moment” the excited crowds were presented with bottles of Johnnie Walker Gold Label Reserve that were carried in gold lit ice buckets. The “Glamorous Gold” ambience was further enhanced with performances and music by female ‘Trance’ extraordinaire DJ Claudia Cazacu, all the way from London, and from across the Causeway, Singapore based, Russian DJ Stas Madorksi was also on hand. They wowed everyone with their amazing turntable skills and ensured revellers a truly unforgettable weekend to remember. Revellers also got to participate in a Lucky Draw contest which saw three lucky participants going home with a 1.75L Magnum of Johnnie Walker Gold Label Reserve each.

TOKYO KITCHEN

a unique take on authentic japanese cuisine

To bring about the taste of Japan especially in such an exotic locale as dear old Malaysia, it is not enough to simply buy a Japanese recipe book and attempt to reproduce an approximation in our kitchens that are more suited to stir-fry, sambal and coconut milk. What it requires is nothing less than evoking the Japanese culinary experience in totality. That is what Tokyo Kitchen’s mission is all about. This Japanese food restaurant is focused on conjuring an immersive appreciation into the world of Japanese cuisine through the recreation of atmosphere, authenticity and choice. Owner Tommy Swee enthused, “To me, Japanese food is a form of art.” and designed his premise accordingly. In that vein it’s all about appealing not only to the palette, but also to the senses. Already, from the outside, patrons to Tokyo Kitchen are invited to step into another world. The exterior resembles a traditional Japanese shrine with wood paneling and lanterns hanging everywhere. The wishing tablets can be used by visitors to write their earnest wishes, a prayer to the gods. Upon entering, the illusion of being in the hallowed halls of a Shinto shrine are further enhanced with the interior walls being covered in brown wood paneling. The effect is calming,

132

almost meditative. Which is the perfect state for approaching the incoming meal. Dishes are authentic Japanese - at the same time enlivened by a dash of Malaysian zest for the local appeal. Prepare to be spoiled for choice by the dazzling array of tasteful delights on offer. Creatively designed sushis at affordable prices are available and always popular. Signature dishes include the Tokyo Kitchen Special Roll – a delightful little roll of fried tiger prawn topped with mango slice, shrimp roe, unagi, or eel,and garnished with an in-house special peanut sauce. To attract more Malaysian patrons, Tokyo Kitchen has prepared an amazing host of salmon-centric dishes. According to Tommy, this is because in his experience, Malaysians are partial to salmon. As such he even has a salmon sushi concoction with 24 different toppings. It’s an amazing line-up, but Tommy Swee is not

content on resting on his laurels. “We update the menu with a new dish every three months.” That commitment to innovation and improvement of his patron’s palette is a tribute to Tommy’s conviction that there is ‘a sense of beauty’ to eating. Come this July, Tommy will be adding two new outlets to the chain this year - Berjaya Times Square in July and One City in September. www.facebook.com/TokyoKitchen

Tommy credits much of his success to his dad, Mr Swee Theam Hock, and mum, Ms Seow Mei Leng, for their motivation and support.

ON THIS How An Ethiopian Goat Herder Discovered Coffee While the exact story of when or who discovered coffee is unknown, there’s a widely circulated mythical story that somewhat goes like this – once upon a time, in a land far, far away, an Ethiopian goatherd named Kaldi was minding his herd when he noticed a strange occurrence. He found his flock of goats dancing with abandoned glee near a coffee shrub that bear cherry-red berries. Puzzled, Kaldi tasted the berries himself and was soon getting the grove down with his flock. (Don’t get any ideas, we really meant dancing).

NOT EVERYONE’S CUP OF COFFEE ‘Kopi Luwak’ is certainly the most expensive coffee in the world. ‘Kopi Luwak’ comes from the Indonesian island of Sumatra, an area where the stealthy Luwak, otherwise known as the Asian Palm Civet roams free. The process begins with the civet selecting and consuming the ripest coffee cherries and later on excreting the undigested beans as clusters of excrement. The enzymes in the civet’s digestive system apparently add a unique flavour to the bean which is then picked up by the locals and sold. Doesn’t that sound like some good s***?

ARABICA BEANS vs. ROBUSTA BEANS The main commercial coffee beans are Arabica (Coffea Arabica) and Robusta (Coffea Robusta). Arabica Beans • Arabica beans (before roasting) are said to smell of blueberries, giving the roasted beans a sweet smell. • Arabica beans are generally more flavorful than Robusta, though not all premium gourmet coffee beans are Arabica. Robusta Beans • Robusta beans are used for most every day and instant coffees, and contain nearly twice as much caffeine as Arabica beans. • Robusta beans (before roasting) are said to conjure a grainy and nutty fragrance.

FASTEN YOUR SEAT BELTS

Known as the “bean belt”, it’s an area between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn, a horizontal strip across the globe in which almost all coffee plants are grown. This area provides the best climate to produce the maximum amount of coffee.

360 Celsius turned two last month, growing from a single publication to a fast-growing integrated media hub. To celebrate this joyous occasion with a bang, we held our 2nd Year Anniversary party at the fittingly snazzy cigar and whiskey lounge of Marini’s on 57. Perched on the 57th floor of Menara 3 Petronas in the Kuala Lumpur City Centre, the iconic Kuala Lumpur hotspot boasts majestic views of the city as well as the Petronas Twin Towers that aptly complemented the mood of the event. Titled Bold is Gold, the party that was far more spectacular than what we could possibly 7

portray with a few pictures, the 360 Celsius 2nd Year Anniversary received a lively turn-up which saw some of the most prominent people from various industries gracing the scenic loft. Throughout the night, we enjoyed drinks as a very talented live band played their hearts out to our delight.

6

But those were just some of the elements that made the night so unforgettable. Throughout the night, our guests were also treated to amazing prizes from our generous sponsors including the likes of Johnnie Walker, Stuhrling, camel active, DECLÉOR, Burt’s Bees, Mashad Leather, and Zest Fashion.

Launch of adult student

Artists’ exhibition No Boundary

KL has been blessed with more art exhibitions in recent years and a maturing art scene but this was an exhibition with a welcome twist – a showcase for the talent of KL residents themselves. The Studio @ KL in Publika Mont Kiara opened its doors for the public to paint two years ago. Their open, friendly and engaging approach has reaped dividends for the artists who were given an opportunity to take part in their very own exhibition. “No Boundary” certainly lived up to its name and reflected the ethos of The Studio @ KL – regular people have talent and given the right environment, that talent can be harnessed on the canvas. The thinking that “I cannot paint” should be no boundary to your creative talent. This concept was demonstrated in spades at the exhibition as the adult students looked proudly at their work with family and friends. No Boundary Art exhibition is a testimony to the talent of the students’ work. Most are

homemakers and young professionals who paint in their spare time – what they have produced is incredible. It is a very prolific showcase as students paint what they wish to as opposed to an imposed, set prescribed program. Jennifer Tan of The Studio @ KL says that, “We firmly believe in the creative side that lies within each one of us, sometimes people just need a little push to unlock it. A lot of our students initially walk in nervous and shy, not believing they have what it takes to create a piece of art. We set out to make all our students relax and give them a warm environment that is conducive for them to want to paint”. It is this outlook that has made The Studio @ KL a success – people picking up a brush and giving it a go. If you are interested in taking up the Adult Art Class or doing a one off “Art Jamming” session, then visit www.thestudioatkl.com

The students proudly displayed their artwork at the ‘No Boundary’ Art exhibition.
