oin the Ocala Civic Theatre as they attempt to set a new Guinness World Record for the longest continuous theatrical performance. The fun begins on March 29 at 7pm and will continue through April 2 at noon. “If we succeed, the bragging rights alone on this world record are the coolest thing,” says Katrina Ploof, artistic director at the Ocala Civic Theatre. So, what are the rules? For starters, a cast of no more than 20 actors total may attempt the record-breaking performance. Performers also may not leave the theater grounds during the attempt, and each performer may not return to the stage for at least 60 minutes following the end of a play. Official timekeepers will be on hand keeping logs to ensure all rules are followed. The backstage area will be outfitted with high-energy snacks, no doubt, as well as cots for the actors and actresses to catch cat naps in between acting roles. Showers and dressing rooms are already taken care of. The Ocala Civic Theatre has been performing for audiences in Marion County for 70 years this year, and what better way to celebrate than with a huge fundraising event. The previous theatrical marathon world record was set in 2014 at the Lamb Players Theatre in California.

Magical Memories When you had kids, other parents said they would grow up in the blink of an eye, and it didn’t take long to realize they were right. Use your time wisely and plan a family date night that’s sure to provide a lifetime of memories. // B Y K A R I N F A B R Y- C U S H E N B E R Y

nimals, food, fun and rides. If that sounds like a perfect family night out, then add the Marion County Fair, hosted by Florida Kids Helping Kids, to your list of upcoming to-dos. A small group of youngsters between the ages of 7 and 17 and their exceptionally busy founder and mentor Gerri Gerthe, along with an army of volunteers, have worked tirelessly for months to make the Marion County Fair a success. With no permanent fairgrounds in Marion County, the group had to think outside the box. “We are having to spread out a bit,” says Gerri. “We had to get creative in order to host the livestock shows, creative arts, the midway and more.” But they didnʼt leave anything out. This yearʼs fair includes a lengthy list of things to do. From seeing the alpaca and llama shows (among other awesome animals from the Ocala Petting Zoo) and watching beauty pageants to exploring the creative arts categories (you can 16

enter until the day of the competition!) and riding the rides, there truly is something for everyone. Belle City Amusements is providing the midway, which will include more than two dozen rides. Some favorites include the Zipper, Drop Zone, Scrambler and the double-decker Ferris wheel. The midway portion of the fair will be set up in the Paddock Mall parking lot near the food court. Pageants for infants through 19 years old will take place inside the mall as will other live entertainment. The livestock shows will take place near Central Florida Eye Institute. Money raised through pageant fees will go to support the Ocala Petting Zoo and the Ocala Domestic Violence/Sexual Assault Center. In recent years, the fair has donated $20,000 to the Marion County school system. Money raised

through the midway goes right back into funding future Marion County Fairs for future generations to enjoy. With any good fair comes fair food. Youʼll find all the favorites here, from corndogs and cotton candy to funnel cakes and cheesesteaks. Not to mention, the mall food court is close by. If youʼre planning a trip with the kids, keep in mind that Sunday and Thursday youʼll find a coupon for unlimited rides on the Marion County Fairʼs website. A daily wristband is also available. “This fair is about bringing everyone and everything in the community together,” says Gerri. “Itʼs about preserving tradition and enjoying time together as a family.” Marion County Fair // April 2-5, 2020 // Check out marioncountyfairfl.com for more information.

Millwood Flower Farm offers specialty-cut flowers grown locally and picked at the height of freshness. // B Y M E L I S S A P E T E R S O N

Spring is here, and thereĘźs nothing more in season than beautiful bouquets of blooming flowers. Just as produce is best bought locally and when itĘźs in season, locally grown and hand-picked flowers offer a longer vase life than flowers that have been imported and traveled many days before arriving at your local florist. Thankfully, Natalie Lyons, owner of Millwood Flower Farm, has brought this service to Marion County. Natalie works her two-acre farm located in

Reddick with her son, Seth, and occasionally her husband, Joe. Since opening in February 2019, the farm has grown many types of flowers that cannot be found at a typical florist because they donʼt ship well, including anemone, ranunculus, snapdragon, zinnia, celosia, ammi, aster, didiscus, bachelor buttons and cosmos. The farm also offers herbs that smell wonderful in arrangements, like basil and lemon balm; traditional sunflowers and a variety of sunflowers that are less familiar to the average flower lover;

as well as a few grasses and 20 yearsʼ worth of perennials such as spirea, camellia, hydrangea and azalea that are used as foliage. “Growing flowers to sell combines my love of growing with my enjoyment of beauty and encouraging others,” says Natalie. “We use sustainable methods for watering and fertilizing because we care about the health of our water and soil. We use no synthetic fertilizers and no chemical herbicides or pesticides. We believe strongly in the health of the soil, so we use a method called no-dig, or no-till. Because we use sustainable methods, the bees and the birds and the beneficial insects thrive.” Millwood Flower Farm grows all year except

July and August, but the flowers are more plentiful during certain times of the year, such as March through May and October and November. Flowers are harvested on Mondays and Fridays, and flowers are sold by the stem, bouquet, arrangement and bucket, for those wishing to design bouquets or arrangements themselves. You can also find Natalie at the Ocala Downtown Market most Saturdays from September through June. “We love selling at the Ocala Downtown Market because many of the people we speak to are surprised to learn there is a flower farm here in Marion County,” says Natalie. “We enjoy talking about growing the flowers and telling people how to extend the life of their flowers. At the market we typically sell a $15 mixed bouquet and an $8 bunch. You can always find something unique at our booth.” If youʼre itching to visit the farm and see the blooms for yourself, youʼre in luck. On Sunday, March 8, Millwood Flower Farm is hosting its Flower Field Tour & Centerpiece Workshop event, where participants can explore the field row by row. Afterward, refreshments will be served and Mendel Flower Co. will teach the basics of floral design while participants create their own arrangements. “March is a lovely time of year in the field, since so many varieties will have just come into bloom and there is freshness in the air,” says Natalie. “We are limiting the amount of tickets we sell to create a feeling of intimacy.” Tickets are $75 per person, and purchasing information can be found on the farmʼs website under the “Blog” tab. Be sure to stay up to date on future events, such as a Posy & Lettering Workshop in May, by following them on social media and visiting the website. FAT TIRE FUN The Santos Trailhead, part of the Marjorie Harris Carr Cross Florida Greenway, is consistently rated one of the top places to bike ride in the country. And the Fat Tire Festival is the perfect time to check it out. // B Y K A R I N F A B R Y- C U S H E N B E R Y

ear after year the Fat Tire Festival, hosted each spring by the Ocala Mountain Bike Association, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection and Florida State Parks, attracts the biggest names in the mountain biking industry. Add to that live bands, tasty food and, of course, trail rides, and you have an event that is both laid back and fun for the whole family. “The Fat Tire Festival is a pinnacle event that captures a lot of peopleʼs attention,” says Chris Fernandez, owner of Santos Bike Shop and a sponsor of several events hosted by the Ocala Mountain Bike Association. “The festival is an industry event, one that consumers wouldnʼt typically have an opportunity to experience.” One of the highlights of the event is having the opportunity to test drive dozens of the best bikes in the business. “Itʼs all about touching and feeling the products,” Chris says. “You can take the bikes out onto the trail and give them a try. These are the Cadillacs of the biking industry, bikes that you wouldnʼt usually have the opportunity to ride.” The bikes are available in a variety of sizes and styles for adult riders, and the process is quick and easy to take one for a test spin. More than 100 vendors, highlighting everything needed for a successful ride, including bikes, helmets, shoes, jerseys, tires, computers and more, will be on hand during the weekend-long event. Bike vendors include Scott Sports, Santa Cruz Bicycles, Kona Bicycle Co, Rocky Mountain Bicycles, just to name a few. “The manufacturers of bikes and beyond will be there showcasing their latest products,

gear and innovations at the Trailhead Vendor Village,” says Chris. The Fat Tire Festival is an event thatʼs geared toward both the experienced and the novice rider, adults and children alike. With that being said, if you donʼt have your own mountain bike already, there are opportunities to both rent and buy bikes, including used bikes previously available as rentals. “In one fashion or another, this sport is accessible for everyone,” adds Chris. “You just have to get out and do it. Once youʼre out there on the trails and you understand how beautiful the scenery is and how much fun it is, youʼll want to come back and enjoy it again and again.” One of the most anticipated aspects of the festival is the Epic 50 Ride on Saturday. The ride is self-guided and fully supported with safety patrollers, food and drink stations, and bathrooms, all on a chaperoned, fully marked course. Although the 50-mile ride is more about enjoyment than competition, finisher medals and T-shirts are handed out to participants. If youʼre coming in from out of town, you may opt for camping at the Santos Trailhead Campground. Camping registrations include entrance into the Epic 50 Ride, a campsite, campground meals, including Saturday breakfast and dinner and Sunday breakfast,

plus live entertainment and bicycle-related films and entertainment. The Fat Tire Festival will also include a variety of safety seminars, a kidsʼ rodeo and demonstrations, including trick stunts. Free bike clinics, that you can sign up for on site, will feature small groups working with certified instructors to learn new skills or dust-off old ones. Skills clinics will include cornering fundamentals, wheel lifts pedaling, jumping, riding over obstacles and more. The Santos Bike Shop will host a happy hour from 12-4pm on Saturday that will act as a fundraiser for the Ocala Mountain Bike Association. A $5 donation gets you a souvenir glass and free beer and snacks. Itʼs a great way to connect with friends and support a good cause at the same time. Regardless of how you get involved at the festival, Chris encourages you to do just that, come out and get involved. “I enjoy helping people become next level active,” says Chris. “Itʼs about more than just riding a bike. People have to get going and get involved. If youʼve never experienced the Santos Trails, the Fat Tire Festival is a great way to see for yourself what all the hype is about.” Fat Tire Festival // March. 6-8, 2020 // For a complete schedule of events and other details, visit santosfattire.com. Get Your Green Thumb On

The Master Gardeners’ Spring Festival returns to Marion County’s Southeastern Livestock Pavilion this month. // B Y C Y N T H I A M C F A R L A N D

ere in the Sunshine State, we donʼt experience the total lack of growing season our Northern friends endure during winter, but we still like to celebrate springʼs arrival. The Master Gardenersʼ Spring Festival, hosted by the UF/IFAS Marion County Master Gardeners, is heralded as the areaʼs largest all-in-one plant sale and gardening expo, and itʼs the perfect outing to welcome the new season and indulge in all things garden related. Mark your calendars for the second weekend in March to attend the 26th annual festival at the Southeastern Livestock Pavilion in Ocala, promising more vendors and opportunities than ever. “Our festival has turned into an A-to-Z of whatever you need for gardening. It runs the full gamut of things for the average gardener,” says Audrey Edwards, chairman of the Spring Festival committee. “We have more variety of vendors, plants and plant material now.” In addition to a diverse selection of plants, vendors offer an enticing assortment of garden/yard decor, accessories and landscaping needs. Many festivalgoers bring folding carts or wagons to tote their purchases. More than 80 vendors are participating this year, along with over a dozen non-profits, as well as multiple food vendors, including Big Leeʼs Serious About Barbecue. An improved festival layout means vendors are concentrated in one central area so you can take it all in without having to walk long distances. “Weʼve really gone all out for the KidZone this year,” says Edwards about this popular section of the festival that educates and entertains elementary school-age attendees. “We had more vendors asking to come to the KidZone than we had space for, so we made more room! Thereʼs a butterfly tent and even live bats. Kids can learn about planting seeds and even take their plant home to keep their interest growing.” Throughout both days, an array of indoor seminars, ingarden talks and demonstrations will cover a wide-ranging 22

THE NEED FOR

SPEED FLORIDA MAY BE MOSTLY KNOWN FOR MICKEY MOUSE AND SANDY BEACHES, BUT TRUE RACE FANS KNOW THAT FLORIDA’S RACETRACKS ARE WHERE IT’S AT. BY KARIN FABRY-CUSHENBERY

51ST ANNUAL AMALIE MOTOR OIL NHRA GATORNATIONALS

Theyʼre loud, theyʼre powerful and theyʼre ridiculously fast. If you havenʼt been to the Amalie Motor Oil NHRA Gatornationals yet, youʼre missing out on one heck of a drag racing experience. The National Hot Rod Association hosts 24 national events around the nation each year, and the Gatornationals is one of the largest and most attended. And rightfully so. “Itʼs an exciting event for sure,” says Gainesville Raceway Track Manager Mike Yurick. “Thereʼs always something going down the track. From morning until the end of the day, thereʼs racing to watch.” Upward of 450 racers from all over the country make the trek to Gainesville to compete each year in the Gatornationals, with 140 to 150 of them competing in the upper pro categories, including Top Fuel and Funny Car. The remaining racers are sportsmen racers who are divided into classes. Many are from Florida, but others travel from the United Kingdom, Sweden, Australia, New Zealand and beyond to compete on whatʼs considered one of the best hot rod racetracks in MAR ‘20

29

the country, featuring newly finished, fullconcrete racing surfaces. The Gainesville Raceway is no stranger to exciting racing firsts, including the first 300-mph Top Fuel pass in 1992 and the first 200-mph Pro Stock Motorcycle pass. Now in its 51st year, the Gatornationals is known as one of the most prestigious events in drag racing. According to Yurick, a win at Gatornationals is one the racers like to have on their résumé. Unlike many professional sporting events, the Gatornationals are very fan accessible. “Fans can get right down into the pit area and watch the crew work on the cars between rounds and meet with the drivers who sign autographs,” says Yurick. “Thereʼs a lot of fan interaction.” Itʼs been said that “every ticketʼs a pit pass.” The Gatornationals is the kind of racing you feel with your whole body. The sights, sounds and physical sensations of the hot rods is what keeps people coming back. “These engines are 1,100 to 1,200 horsepower engines,” says Yurick. “The G-forces felt by the drivers are similar to what would be

GATORNATION

experienced in a rocket. One cylinder of these hot rods has more power than an entire Nascar Cup engine.” The hot rods travel 1,000 feet in just 3.8 seconds, reaching speeds of 330 miles per hour. The vehicles race in a side-by-side elimination format. And although racing is the main attraction at the Gatornationals, itʼs not the only one. The midway area features all sorts of vendor and sponsor booths, including manufacturer displays. Food concessions are also available. But Yurick admits “people come to see the racing.” For the true race fan, the Top Eliminator Club is how you experience the races. “The Club offers reserved seating in an angled 30

grandstand,” says Yurick. The TEC also features a weekend continental breakfast and buffet lunch, free nonalcoholic drinks, a cash bar, driver appearances, closedcircuit televisions and an unobstructed view of the track.

DAYTONA BIKE WEEK

Called the worldʼs largest motorcycle event, Daytona Bike Week is a 10-day event featuring street concerts and festivals, races, bike shows, vendors, food, rallies and so much more. This yearʼs event runs from March 6-15. This markʼs Daytona Beachʼs 79th Bike Week, and the event shows no signs of slowing down. If anything, it continues to grow in popularity with roughly 500,000 visiting the event each year. Itʼs even been named a Top 20

Event by the Southeast Tourism Society. Janet Kersey, executive vice president and COO of the Daytona Regional Chamber of Commerce, says the positive impacts of the event are far-reaching, from money and taxes collected to the camaraderie felt by the bikers and beyond. And then thereʼs the fun to be had. “Our local merchants put on a great show with events and activities at a large variety of establishments,” she says. “Main Street remains a top spot to visit any time during the event. Here youʼll find live entertainment, the Budweiser Clydesdales on certain days and a host of interesting people and their motorcycles.” While in town check out the Official Motorcycle of Bike Week and enter for your chance to win this museum-quality designer bike. Only 4,500 tickets will be sold, and the fundraiser is organized by the Daytona Beach Community Foundation, proceeds from the contest go right back into the eventʼs operations for next year. You can see the bike at officialbikeweek.com. There you will also find a calendar of events, including all the details for the 1st Annual Space Coast Harley-Davidson Bike

commemorative coin at the end.” Also make sure to check out North Ormond with Destination Daytona and the ever-popular Iron Horse Saloon (you may have seen a T-shirt or two with this barʼs name on it.) Things can get a bit crowded during Bike Week, so to escape the bumper-to-bumper traffic and noise, a trip to the beach or other natural destination is warranted. “We are a tourism community and love to show off our everyday sensational environmentally friendly destination to the

Show, the 48th Ratʼs Hole Bike Show, the 2020 Daytona Swap Meet and more. Daytona International Speedway will feature plenty of racing action, from street bikes to supercross, including the 50th Annual Daytona Supercross, a Monster Energy AMA Supercross event on March 7. The Ricky Carmichael Amateur Supercross and Daytona Vintage Supercross & ATV Supercross will also be held. Check the Speedway schedule for even more motorcycle racing throughout bike week, plus the Harley-Davidson Thunder Alley, demo rides, vendors featuring all the major OEMs and other activities, food and camping. “Across the street at One Daytona is the Official Welcome Center for the event, which includes the Official Pocket Guide with a large amount of information on a variety of events and activities across the county, the Official Artist Poster and quite a few friendly Daytona Regional Chamber Ambassadors who know the town, how to get around and where to go for just about any need you may have. Itʼs also the last stop on the Amsoil Treasure Hunt, a really fun way to see the area and collect a limited-edition

world,” says Kersey. “The economic impact also helps our residents earn extra income, which then translates back into supporting our community and improving our destination so more visitors can travel here and enjoy the greatness of nature at it best. Having played host to the event for over 79 years, our community really embraces the opportunity to welcome such a diverse group of visitors to our area. Itʼs a great time for many locals who also just love to attend the event as well.” Daytona Beach Bike Week // March 6-15 // Daytona Beach, Florida // officialbikeweek.com

LEESBURG BIKEFEST

Just a short drive down the road youʼll find 30 blocks of fun at Leesburg Bikefest. The event is the culmination of a yearʼs worth of planning. As with any bikefest, the motorcycles are the main attraction. A handful of not-to-bemissed bike shows will take place throughout the three-day festival, including the Full Throttle Ride-In and the Ratʼs Hole Custom Bike show. Thousands of bikers will also convene in the streets of Leesburg to show off their own rides and hang with fellow bikers. If youʼre looking for a little excitement during bike week, take in the Wall of Death Stunt Show at the Canal Street Square on Friday, April 24. Witness riders riding horizontally as they circle

the stunt wall. For the car enthusiasts in the group, check out the Rats and Bugs Car Show or Ma Barkerʼs Gangster Car Attraction.

BIKE WEEK

Over the course of the event, more than 55 concerts will be performed, including everything from local rockers and bands to nationally recognized acts, including Saliva, Hoobastank, Lit and Eddie Montgomery of Montgomery Gentry. There will also be six hot-body contests and a variety of bike demonstrations. The event will also include more than 200 vendors and seven venues of activities, music and bike shows. ut down the oven mitt and grab your keys—youʼre going out to dinner tonight. Letʼs face it, you deserve it. Itʼs also safe to say that saving money is high on your list of priorities. Fortunately, one local businesswoman has brought the Gift Certificates & More (GCM) app to Marion County. And a fun food festival is kicking off the appʼs arrival in Ocala. “The concept is to provide everyday savings to consumers while going out to eat or enjoying other favorite places,” says

Territory Owner Ellie Hancock. “Itʼs free for businesses to list deals and free for consumers to download the app and redeem them. I have found a niche that allows me to help everyone.” And with dozens of local businesses listed, and more added each month, itʼs easy to start saving. Many of those businesses will be on hand for Ocalaʼs first-ever GCM Food Fest on April 2 at the Southeastern Livestock Pavilion. “Where else can you go to try the majority of Marion Countyʼs favorite restaurants,” says

and so many more. For $2 a ticket, attendees can purchase a food/drink/activity ticket to be redeemed at any booth for a fresh sampling or fun activity. Ellie estimates that an average family of four can have a great night and fill up on samples for less than $50. The event will also include Beer Zones hosted by Mojoʼs and Coke Zones by Coke FL. If the whole family is in attendance, youʼll want to visit Ocala Premier Inflatables to work off some extra energy or Jewelz Entertainment for face painting. Rage will be on hand with laser tag, along with music and a few other fun surprises. Have you tried Firehouse Urban Axe Throwing yet? You can at the festival! Brick City Creative will be teaming up with the State of Real with Kenny and Buddy to stream the event live. Although new to Ocala, GCM festivals arenʼt a new concept. A recent festival in nearby Celebration Pointe drew 10,000 attendees. The soon-to-be Ocala GCM Food Fest is shaping up to be just as popular. “This is a fun, family-friendly event,” says Ellie. “Whether you are 92 or 2, we will have something for you to enjoy.”
