This week I joined the long, long list of people that fell in love with La La Land.

I wandered into the Rave with a friend, equipped with the water bottle I always sneak into theaters. (Seriously, who would ever pay five dollars for a water bottle? Water is a basic human right, dammit.) I expected to poke holes in the movie—I'd been warned that the film was deeply flawed, or boring, too long, overrated.

But I loved it. I loved everything about it—the subversion of a classic movie genre, the stunning cinematography, the aching feeling of wanting success and knowing you just might not be good enough. La La Land captured that moment of pure serenity, that feeling of twilight—both perfectly still and yet completely on the verge of something amazing. The movie was about anticipation, about being on the cusp. There were scenes so beautifully composed they moved me to tears. Not crying, just tears.

To me, the movie wasn't about Ryan Gosling or Emma Stone or their sweetly Hollywood romance. Yes, Ryan Gosling is handsome. And Emma Stone should completely win an Oscar. But the movie was just a means through which Damien Chazelle could write a love letter to what he

loves most: music and musicals. The movie succeeded in making me feel something because it was so clearly made by someone who creates with love.

And that's what good art does. It makes you feel something. The same reason I loved La La Land is the same reason I'll always love Broadway musicals and movies and television—you can tell when it's good, because it will inspire the same feeling in you that it inspired in its creator.

I'm attracted to people who are passionate about things. I think one of the most magnetic things in the world is passion, especially for the arts. It's why art is important. It can move and inspire. And more than that, it begs people to commit to it. This week we saw our writers and editors go above and beyond for art—we saw them spend 24 hours in Van Pelt basement, explore strip clubs and cover their face with food, all in the name of a story or a piece or a video.

And at the end of the day, we have to give credit where credit is due: La La Land nailed the Los Angeles traffic.

It's 9 a.m. at your local coffee shop. The charade begins.

Penn students sprint to the counter, bark orders at the baristas, scan their mobile apps and demand their coffees after 30 seconds. Pause. What kind of degeneracy is this?

Does Penn no longer have time for politeness? Are we too busy to act like anything other than spawns of Satan?

We're not too busy. We just think we're too busy. Let's be real, the chances you stayed up until 2 a.m. watching Grey's Anatomy after fucking around in your GSR for three hours are pretty high.

Penn takes busyness and

makes it competitive. Which isn't surprising, because Penn takes eating in front of Frontera and makes it competitive.

You say you're on two publications; I say I'm on four. You say you're taking five credits; I say I'm taking five and a half, plus doing an independent study, so I haven't slept in months. You say you're screwed for that test; I say I'm more screwed—never mind that Mark's Cafe is my diet and VP is my home. The response to "How are you" is never just "Good"; it's "Ugh, so tired," or something even more needlessly dramatic.

Do you know who is busy

and tired? People who don't have time to complain they're busy and tired. During the Space Race, did NASA scientists tell everyone how overburdened and overworked they were? No. They were too focused on getting shit done. If you think you're busy now, wait until you have a full–time job, have to pay all your own bills and not be 400 pounds in the meantime.

Or wait until you have a build a bona fide rocket. Have you tried hurtling something into space? Try complaining then.

Penn loves the aesthetic of busyness. Being over–stressed and underslept seems like

the only acceptable way to be. When did it become unfashionable to sprawl out on College Green with a papaya drink and meditate on abundance? Highbrow wants the return of leisure: Cards Against Humanity, movie marathons and long, aimless walks through West Philly.

Idleness is in, competitive busyness is out. Remember: you have the same number of hours in the day as Beyonce.

Who is now pregnant with twins. You're not that busy.

MY FATHER'S FAVORITE CONCOCTION

or the last two months, every day I've woken up and had my father’s favorite concoction of hot water, honey, turmeric and cinnamon. It's helped me with my pain, my health and my anxiety. Some people question the recipe, saying it’s just “old Indian spices.” The same people that read Rupi Kaur’s Milk and Honey and the same people that do yoga every morning question a recipe my family brought with themselves when they immigrated to this country. The same people who didn’t believe Trump could be president are holding up signs protesting how this country could be so evil to immigrants and refugees. Those are the kids who called me names when I brought food from home. They are the girls who made fun of my

ASHNA VIJAY BHATIA hair for being too black, bushy and monotone. The boys who told me they could never like me because I smelled like curry. Now, they are the same peers who love Indian food and wear saris to events. The folks who believe Bollywood movies are so awesome and creative. The men who now want brown women to teach them how to cook Indian food.

Where were you back then? When my parents would work till 10 p.m., and I would only see them for a few hours every day. Where are you now? For the immigrant and refugee families that leave those airports and are supported by no one. Families that feel scared and hopeless. Children that feel abused in your classrooms, groups and neighborhoods. Where are you?

Two weeks ago, I watched as several people protested outside of PHL Airport Terminal A. The signs were inspiring and uplifting. Wow, people actual care now…or do they? I’ve been through my fair share of being quiet, being safe and being palatable. It’s easy. It doesn’t take much. But two weeks ago, as I sat on the floor of PHL airport, taking part in a majority black and brown body sit–in, and saw a group of cops surround me as they closed the doors—I remembered my first years in this country as a brown immigrant.

They were hard. They were tiring. They were lonely.

They were desperate.

And that is why I ask every single one of you— My sorority sisters, group project teams, my richer–than–most friends, my privileged Penn people, the folks I barely talk to, the folks I barely listen to, the white folks, the brown folks who give two shits, my uncles and aunts who think this will never ever affect them, my professors and teachers who try to educate future American generations, my temple–goers, my holier–than–thou spiritual leaders, the people that love to educate others because they think they know more, and the people that don’t care because this is not affecting them now— a question I asked myself not too long ago.

What are you doing to aid these brown and black bodies that have been struggling far longer than this president’s obscene orders?

So do more than holding up signs, do more than marches.

Educate yourself, read about white supremacy, organize a sit–in, a teach–in, don’t let your family members be proud that they voted for Trump.

Call your Republicans out, call your Democrats out, call someone. Post and share stories. Use your privilege, and at the end of the day, maybe instead of getting a Copa margarita, donate some money to local organizations that have been on the streets fighting this fight since day one.

This is the time to get really mad and fight.

And to my fellow brown and black folks who have been fighting far more than I have, I hope you take some time for self–care. I hope you know that you did not create this mess. I thank you for your work, your resilience and your strength. Let me pour you a cup of some hot water, honey, turmeric and cinnamon. I promise it will help.

EGOOF THE WEEK: OLIVIA GRAHAM & PEARL LO ANNIKA IYER

Just a couple artistically inclined, cheese–loving, super–impressive feminist friends.

“I smell like a bakery,” Olivia Graham (C’17) exclaims with a full mouth, shoving the tin of buttery sugar cookies across the desk with her foot.

“Have some, please! We really can’t stop,” Pearl Lo adds (C’17).

The two lounge on an orange couch, amidst a pile of coats, snacks and important–looking documents. In their tiny 10 by 10 office in Platt Performing Arts, what appears to be clutter feels a lot more like organized chaos.

It’s an artists’ haven, enlivened by the presence of The Vagina Monologue’s producer and director (respectively Olivia and Pearl).

V–Day is one of the largest social justice movements at Penn.

It serves as a force that empow-

ers and enables individuals to speak out against violence against women. Each year, the proceeds from the production of The Vagina Monologues are donated to Women Organized Against Rape, a Philadelphia non–profit that aims to eliminate sexual violence.

Besides The Vagina Monologues production, V–Day at Penn also hosts fundraising and awareness events throughout the year.

Olivia had never acted before her freshman year. She agreed to attend a VagMons GBM with a friend, found her people and never left.

Pearl’s decision to join Vagmons was less impromptu. She was heavily involved in theatre and drama in high school and

knew that she wanted to pursue her love of the arts at Penn. In her own words, Pearl’s ultimate goal is "creating beautiful art and educating people through the process.”

Pearl is a Communications and Cinema Studies double major, sub–matriculating into the Graduate School of Education in the division of higher education. She will be staying a fifth year at Penn.

Despite Olivia and Pearl’s curiously divergent Penn experiences, the two have come together as a part of the V–Day movement at Penn. They exude passion for the show, and their mission here on campus. They playfully joke and poke fun, but underneath the banter, Olivia and Pearl are remarkably in sync

OG: Fuck in the stacks! I’m kidding.

PL: Done! ...I’m kidding too.

OG: I’m not an exhibitionist person to be honest.

PL: This has been on my bucket list since freshman year: it is to have seen all 46 groups within the performing arts council by the time I graduate. I have mabe 6 more?

Street: Piece of advice you would give your freshman self?

Olivia Graham: Being okay with not having an answer for everything. Other than that maybe, learn to cook early and invest in your relationships.

Pearl Lo: Everything I’m doing right now I do because I love it, and I love the people in it.

Know your limits, but also do what makes you happiest while finding a good balance.

When asked what the V–Day movement means to them personally, Olivia and Pearl pause. “It allows me to have a voice about something I am incredibly passionate about, and it gives a voice to a lot of people whose voices have not been heard,” Pearl shares.

“V–Day is a safe but also challenging space to learn and grow. It is also a place where I feel extremely supported, and empowered when working with people I admire.”

In terms of the legacy they hope to leave, Pearl says she “hopes that people come out of this show being glad that they did Street: What would your Spirit Food be?

PL: Cheese! Cheese is so versatile. I can be fun and comforting like mac–n–cheese, but at the same time, if you go to a classy thing with faculty and alum, you need something like wine and cheese. I get paired so well with all these fancy ingredients. I’m good in all stages too!

So why should you attend The Vagina Monologues show? Both Olivia and Pearl believe the show has its shortcomings. "A lot of narratives are left out, and its not sufficiently trans–inclusive," Olivia says. They do, however, undoubtedly agree that its history is so rich and the themes it covers are broad. “This show has something new to say and something new to comment on every year. Now more than ever, it’s essential that we use every mechanism we can to start discussions that need to be had and to be active participants in those discussions,” Olivia says.

OG: Can it be less than three?

Much of what the UA accomplishes goes relatively unrecognized, but their work directly impacts the lives of Penn students.

“We want to make sure leaves of absence are much easier to take, or at least roads going down to leaves of absence for any reason, mental health–related or otherwise, is just more clear for any student.

So that’s a biggie,” said Communications director Michael Krone (C'17). “Or reducing course costs, we work on that with SCUE, and then there’s a lot of other initiatives that the UA is just working behind the scenes on.”

“We are the best way to get a message through to the administration,” explains Kat. "You’ve tapped into a network of some of the most well–connected, well–informed students on campus, who know not only who to talk to about those ideas, but how to frame those ideas in the best way for them to result in something tangible.”

Part of working for the UA involves learning how to unite towareds a common goal, alongside people who have vastly different backgrounds from each other.

“As an international student, it helped put me on the spot and work with a lot of American students,” said Riad, who's from Lebanon.

“There aren’t a lot of international students on the UA, and it also made me realize that a lot of my involvements before were mainly with international students so it’s really like, it was kind of like a cultural shock, just the way people communicate and the way people do things. I learned a lot about the American way of

doing things and learned a lot of communication skills.”

The members of the UA share the same passion and drive for bettering the Penn experience of their peers. Their passions lay in making Penn better—from the tinest detials (like requiring PennInTouch to send an email as soon as grades are posted to keep you from incessantly refreshing the page), to tackling greater issues, like reducing course costs.

The UA is the best advocate that Penn’s undergrad community has to make lasting and positive

changes.

Although many times the goals presented take far longer than a year to implement, there is one thing Kat is proud to say she thinks she’s accomplished already.

CHESTNUT'S RISE TO THE TOP A New Era

Move over Walnut: Chestnut is on the come–up. Walnut Street has always been important for Penn’s campus. With off– and on–campus housing, popular dining options and retail stores, the stretch of Walnut Street from 34th to 40th is an integral part of life at Penn.

However, just one street over, new housing options and dining options are a breath of fresh air on a street that was once considered uneventful.

Chestnut has always been home to some of Penn’s favorites—Wawa, Distrito and Pattaya, to name a few—but new openings and rebrandings are stepping up Chestnut’s restaurant game. Earlier this semester, Ochatto Hot Pot, a style of dining where items are cooked at the table in a boiling pot of stew, opened on 38th and Chestnut Streets, right next to International House of Philadelphia.

Just one block down, occupying the retail space of the fairly new apartment building at 3939 Chestnut, is Jane G Dim Sum House. The new Dim Sum restaurant received a lot of buzz from Philadelphia press and food critics and has been a hit with Penn students as well. Offering not only great food, but also an extensive happy hour and drink menu, Jane G’s is a competitive new spot.

Finally, Caffe Bene (a Korean

coffee chain) opened its doors in Fall 2016 in the retail space underneath the swanky new 3737 Chestnut apartment building.

The high ceilings, cute layout and delectable pastries make this space beautiful for studying or just spending time with friends. Their sweet and Instagrammable waffles are a great treat to share with a friend or enjoy with a cup of coffee.

Besides all of these new openings, there are more proposed additions to Chestnut Street’s landscape. Saigon Cafe, a Pho (Vietnamese noodle) restaurant, is being transformed into a Xi'an style Chinese restaurant.

The new menu has been posted outside, but the opening date for the renovated restaurant is not posted. On the other, more extravagant end, Hamilton Court apartments is gearing up to open up five new restaurants on its property. Scheduled to open are Steve’s Prince Steaks, a cheesesteak restaurant, Bon Chon, a Korean fried chicken chain, Halal Guys, Tea Do, a bubble tea house, and I-CE NY, a rolled ice cream shop. These restaurant additions come after Hamilton Court renovated most of its apartment units with updated kitchens and bathrooms.

In general, Chestnut Street’s additions to University City in terms of housing and food have made the landscape more popu-

lar. College sophomore Andreas Nolan lives in one of the newer buildings on Chestnut and appreciates the availability of more affordable housing options and locations, compared to similar units on Walnut Street.

“I think I’ve been really lucky to live in a new apartment that doesn’t have any inherited problems that haven’t really been addressed by other tenants, and

our landlord has been really quick to address every issue that has come up. Everything in the apartment is super modern, and I feel like I could’ve easily been charged more rent for what I have.”

As the landscape of University City Changes rapidly, there are fears of further gentrification and encroachment into surrounding neighborhoods.

Chestnut Street has been part of Penn’s landscape for quite some time now, but the new growth only leaves us to wonder what will happen to the area of Market and 40th Street, which remains largely untouched by gentrification. While the future is uncertain, we should all enjoy the new editions to our community in University City.

Coffee on colleges campuses is obviously huge, but where does tea fit into our lives as students? Some of us may only think of tea as a beverage to douse with

the world and an endless list of brands and ways to drink, it can be hard to find your favorite tea.

However, there are a few basic types of tea that everyone should know the differences between. White tea, the most delicate and light of all teas, gets its subtle and sweet flavors by undergoing very minimal oxidation (the browning process by which teas are exposed to air and gain their unique flavors and aromas). Philadelphia has a number of great places to both purchase loose leaf tea, or sit down and enjoy a cup. For the best tea experience, we recommend you steep loose leaves—tea bags often contain the dust and ends of broken tea leaves, and because the leaves are so small, tea bags leave you with harsher, more bitter flavors.

Capital Teas in Rittenhouse sells dozens of varieties of loose leaf teas. Their helpful staff, frequent tastings and large selection make this a great place for first time tea buyers. On the other hand, The Random Tea Room & Curiosity Shop in Northern Liberties is a charming tea house. This is the perfect place to enjoy a cup of tea and maybe snap an Instagram photo or two. They also sell loose leaf tea and are the tea supplier for a campus favorite, United By Blue.

Other than United By Blue, Tazo and Teavana teas come in a number of flavors and are sold at multiple places on campus. Although tea bags tend to produce weaker flavors, they can satisfy your tea cravings in a pinch.

Next time things are a bit stressful, or you’re tired of burnt coffee, consider brewing yourself a cup of loose leaf tea. The aromas are relaxing, flavors are interesting and tea can be good for your health—catch the tea on that.

Malaysia, for her part, doesn’t plan to be seen at Atlantis by Penn students, or anyone else, for much longer. She plans to leave the club as soon as she can afford to pay her tuition.

As she says, “FAFSA doesn’t cover it.”

By 12:30 a.m. on a Saturday night, it’s breasts that aren’t covered.

Atlantis is in full swing, Gucci Mane’s “Nothin On Ya” pounding loud. Less than a block away, Penn students are just beginning to return to their Hamilton Court apartments after a night out. The university’s academic facilities sleep quietly nearby, just out of earshot of the club’s deafening music.

But at Atlantis, it feels packed, at least two dozen customers crowding the chromelined bar. A few are engaged in loud competition for the attention of the solitary bartender, a short woman with a tough cherry red scowl on her lips. Her cropped, low–cut black top clings to her D–cups (a size she announces proudly) as she zips along the narrow space between the T–shaped stage and the bar framing it.

Her cleavage is stuffed with crumpled green bills. She won’t accept cash by hand.

On the elevated stage behind the bar, a lean, long–haired dancer slowly begins to shimmy her shoulders out of her neon blue and hot pink thong–and–halter leotard. Her eyelids drop in a flash of pink eyeshadow as she slips the flimsy fabric off of one breast. Then the other. With a diluted smirk, the girl wraps

both of her legs around the gold pole in front of her. She hoists herself up with a firm pull, throws her head back, and slides back down to the ground, gyrating all the way.

“Damnnnnnn!” hoots a man sitting on the long end of the T. His eyes are obstructed by a red baseball cap.

Customers throughout the room are rooted in place, watching similar scenes. They ogle the three women clinging to the poles onstage. They speak in hushed tones to women rubbing up against their thick layers of January clothing. The women of Atlantis are on display, and in here, they’re in control.

As the song changes, a loud and fuzzy voice booms over a poor–quality loudspeaker: “Let’s get Ebony by the stage! Ebony, come to the stage!” A girl wrapped in a thin layer of dark mesh shimmies up the stairs to the pole on the right side of the stage. Her blueand-pink clad coworker steps down into the crowd, and the other two girls each shift one pole to the left for the next dance. Before they begin, each girl takes a spray bottle and hand towel from the ground and carefully wipes down the pole in front of her. The men still watch.

Although Atlantis is built underground, it shares no other distinguishing features with the eponymous sunken city of lore. The only trace of a nautical theme is the sign above the door: blue lettering, the “A” with a sweeping tail indicating waves at sunset. Customers trek down a flight of stairs, through an industrial door, and next to—not through—a metal detector to enter a world of sharp reds and cold metallics. Carpets trailing off the main room of the club indicate the entrances to the four private dance rooms: the Leopard Room, the Cheetah Room, the Tiger Room, and the Jaguar Room. The entire back wall of the club is a row of mirrors, catching each of

the three onstage poles and reflecting them back so that a full view is unavoidable from any part of the club.

“This is the strangest, seediest place you will ever be in,” says Sierra*, the club’s afternoon bartender, with a chuckle. Unlike the woman who works behind the bar at night, Sierra sports a black, full–coverage t–shirt with the words, “I love you more than I love pizza.” Although she’s attractive, with olive skin and glossy hair, Sierra wears notably less makeup than any other female employee at Atlantis. “I used to dance here, but I stopped nine years ago,” she says, leaning over the bar.

“The assistant manager is a friend, so he got me this gig instead.”

On a Saturday at 3 p.m., Sierra is prepping for a double shift. Atlantis’ daily free lunch service has just ended. The stage is empty aside from a spray bottle and towel. There are about five patrons in the club, and even fewer girls on the floor. A large bachelor party is coming in later, and Sierra expects them to spend a lot and tip big. “It’s a white bachelor party,” she admits. “They spend a lot more.”

Malaysia agrees that customer spending varies somewhat demographically, with age being the strongest indicator. Older men pay more; they’re generous with tips and indulge in more private dances than younger crowds. Partly because of this, she only works shifts during the daytime. At night, the crowds tend to be more “amped and hyped up.” She has no desire to be a part of that.

Nighttime also happens to be when the most students come into Atlantis. Though Sierra can’t tell them apart from one another, she’s sure that groups from Penn, Drexel, and Temple all come into the club frequently. Matriculation aside, there’s one significant complaint about student customers that each dancer emphasizes. They rarely tip, and almost never pay for dances.

College senior Amine Sahmoud has been to Atlantis exactly once. Late last semester, he and two female friends found themselves searching for an exciting weekday night out.

“We wanted to go to a male strip club,” Amine clarifies, “but all of the ones we found were like, 20, 30 dollars cover. We saw that Atlantis was only seven dollars, so we figured we’d check it out.”

According to January’s issue of Unveiled, Philly’s monthly magazine “dedicated to exotic entertainment,” there are 4,000 strip clubs nationwide, 67 of which are in and around Philadelphia. The high concentration of clubs creates serious competition—dancers at Atlantis are skeptical of female patrons who come in without men, fearing they might be spies sent from other clubs.

Amine and his friends all had the same first impression of Atlantis. “We were like, ‘Wow, we’re never going to come back here.’” They turned down offers for lap dances from every girl who approached them, but the club was packed, and men all around them were accepting gladly. At 10 p.m., they’d found themselves in the middle of the raunchy night crowd that Malaysia prefers not to dance for.

Amine’s group didn’t stay for long.

Josh*, a College senior and member of an on–campus fraternity, stresses the discrepancy between “nasty– ass, ratchet” Atlantis and the strip clubs he prefers to visit. “It’s a pretty wretched place,” he says. “I’ve been there two or three times this year. I go at the end of the night, when I’m usually pretty destroyed.”

Josh admits that he enjoys bringing his fraternity’s pledges to Atlantis and buying

dances for them, describing their reaction as “a mix of excitement and absolute shock.”

He’s been to “better” clubs elsewhere, including Magic City in Atlanta, Georgia, where he spent a night out with fraternity brothers during the organization’s national convention. “An actual nice strip club is really fun,” he insists.

So why, then, do so many Penn seniors list a trip to Atlantis on their pre–graduation bucket lists? Perhaps the idea of crossing the line between our world and Atlantis is fun because it is “other.” “I feel like it’s a very college thing to do, like it’s wild,” says Amine of his rationale. “We figured we’re seniors, why not do it just to do it. But honestly it’s only really exciting until you walk in. It was a little bit sad.”

As a student, Malaysia lives on both sides of this dichotomy. Aside from her, she says, there are only two or three other students who dance at the club, girls who are using this job as a means to an end. “The other women are all older, and this is their thing, like this is just what they do. They have no real goals in life.”

This past July, a patron named Errick Epperson alleged he was stabbed in the neck by one of Atlantis’ dancers. According to the lawsuit Epperson filed in October, the woman grew angry and attacked him with a shard of broken glass after he refused her proposition for a paid private dance. Epperson’s laceration was stitched up in the emergency room, and the dancer was never arrested. Within months, Epperson had filed his lawsuit against Atlantis, claiming that they knowingly overlooked past as-

sault convictions when hiring the dancer in question.

Malaysia and Sierra openly acknowledge that they don’t feel protected by the establishment they work for. The four cat–themed private dance rooms have no panic buttons, a safety feature found more frequently in upscale clubs. Not one Penn student or other Atlantis patron can recall walking through the metal detector at the club’s entrance rather than around it.

Josh, on the other hand, maintains that Atlantis is “the type of place you only wanna go to once,” even though he has wandered in drunk six or seven times throughout college.

“When you see the people who frequent it, it becomes this dark weird thing,” he says.

For Malaysia, it isn’t fear of her workplace that bothers her—it’s the fear of never moving on. Her time at Atlantis is limited, with a clear end in sight. She reiterates this stance multiple times in a single conversation, almost as if to remind herself: she’ll only work there as long as she absolutely has to. In the final days of January, as she and Sierra wait for the bachelor party to arrive, Malaysia is still at least a year away from declaring her resignation. She fidgets with the wad of cash tucked into her cleavage absentmindedly, repeating herself one final time.

It’s still light outside at 3 p.m., but Atlantis is dark and windowless. On the dimly lit stage, a beautiful woman shakes and spins her way through the end of her routine. As she lithely walks back down the three stairs to the strip club’s floor, she’s already scouring the small crowd for men who might want a private dance. If she can convince them to pay for just four minutes of her time, she’ll make $15.

“For a half–hour private dance, I get to keep $200 of it. I might do three of those or so every shift if I’m lucky,” says Malaysia, tossing her wavy brown hair back over her bony shoulder as she speaks. With her hair swept aside, a wad of bills is tucked under the plunging mesh neckline of her burgundy leotard. A student at the JNA Institute of Culinary Arts, Malaysia (her work name) hopes to become a pastry chef when she graduates in a few years. For now, she might be the only student in University City who’s scoring a larger income from her side job than she will when she begins a career.

Malaysia only exists for three six–hour stints each week, when street clothes are replaced with cutout thong leotards and G–string bikinis in the changing room at Atlantis Gentlemen’s Club. The anonymous woman behind Malaysia’s persona has spent the past year and a half working on and off at University City’s one and only establishment dedicated to exotic entertainment. At 38th and Chestnut, the club is less than two blocks from Penn’s campus, and less than one from Hamilton Court. So it may only be natural that some students possess a sort of voyeuristic fascination with Atlantis.

WHAT YOUR INSTAGRAM WANTS ... is a makeover, duh.

wo weeks ago, Street introduced you to some of our favorite Instagram–famous Quakers. This week, we’re giving you some insight into how to one day—if you’re lucky—rise to their highly coveted level of Insta–proficiency. It’s time to get serious about your aesthetic, with some inside tips on outside apps.

Our first piece of advice: make the switch to VSCO filters.

“VSCO is like Instagram, but you get to be more creative. There are more options,” said Thomas Calder (C'20). “Also, they sort of photoshop you,” added Ellie Wynn (C '20). And it’s true: cer-

tain filters on certain photos can enhance your appearance pretty drastically. Factor in the separate editing features like contrast, highlight, saturation and exposure adjustment, and you have a recipe for success—insta–ntly. In addition to letting you save your pics and post them to Instagram, the app itself lets you post on its own separate social media platform. On it, your followers can share (think: reblog) your photos. More validation for everyone! Likes AND shares!

One app that has come into focus lately is Facetune. This app lets you subtly edit parts of your

appearance: It has a smoothing feature, a whitening feature, a concealer feature, etc. Although Street doesn’t want to promote distortion or falsity on social media—nobody’s perfect, so we shouldn’t pretend to be online— the app is reportedly useful as a quick fix for unfortunate details.

For example: You love the photo of your outfit but have a spot of pasta sauce on your right cheek (fuck you, Restaurant Week) or you NEED to post that pic of you and Joe Biden, but just popped a huge pimple that morning and your appearance is really dull in comparison to

our newest Penn celeb. Use it if you feel you need to—no judgement—but know that Street thinks you’re hot either way. The full app costs four dollars in the app store, and Facetune 2 is the free version with a lot of the capabilities of the original, made by the same group.

Another element to consider when crafting the perfect new Instagram is how the image will look on your page as a whole. A well–organized profile with compatible pictures can bring your social media savvy to the next level. There are different ways to achieve this level of greatness. Sophia Carlson (C'20) explained, “To make [my] feed look super cohesive, I make everything the same color.” She puts the same highlight color overlaying each one of her photos. Her photos are not completely monochromatic, nor put through the same filter, but every image has a slight purple tint that makes her whole page lightly reflect that color. It’s subtle, but effective. This feature can be found on VSCO or on Instagram itself: under the “Edit” section, select “Color,” then “Highlight,” and you can pick your tone and adjust the intensity. There are also other ways to get that uniform look—Alexis Uria (C ’20) uses white borders to distinguish her page from others. “I just like to use Whitagram,” she said, referring to an app that creates this effect. Other apps with this capability include Squaready and InstantSquare.

If you’re looking to spice up your profile, you can also throw a curveball at your loyal followers with Boomerang and Layout.

Both of these apps are made by the creators of Instagram, so you know you can trust them.

Boomerang creates mini videos that loop back and forth continuously—and if done well, they can be really captivating. "I think Boomerang is an interesting way to revitalize Insta," said Daniel Bulpitt (C'20). "It gives it more of an updated feel since things can move, like Apple's live photos on the iPhone 6s."

Boomerang is matching the current technology standards, and beyond that, it's a fun way to get creative with things that a stand– still snapshot can’t quite capture.

Layout lets you stitch together multiple gram–worthy photos into one post. You can stitch together nine pics at max, but it's typically used for maybe two or three. “If I have photos that are kinda similar and I can't choose which one to Insta, I like to use Layout because it creates some dimension,” Lili Froelich (C ’20) explained. The app also lets you double the same picture, and stitch it together in cool patterns with copies of itself. There are also features for reflecting an image and flipping its orientation: very artsy stuff.

The Instagram game is changing, people—but you can too.

Penn students weigh in on #DeleteUber.

rotests erupted in all forms when Donald Trump signed an executive order banning travel from seven Muslim–majority countries. Among those who expressed that anger were the 19,000 members of the New York Taxi Workers Alliance, which called for an hour– long strike stopping all taxi rides to John F. Kennedy International Airport in order to support those being held there as a result of the order.

Uber, however, chose not to partake. Then, 30 minutes after the strike ended, Uber announced via Twitter that it had turned off surge pricing at JFK airport. #DeleteUber appeared on Twitter soon after, as a response to Uber apparently taking advantage of the strike while offering people

an easy way out of the chaos and protests. Uber has been the subject of scrutiny and public criticism in the past, and outrage accumulated further as people pointed to CEO Travis Kalanick’s role on the president’s economic advisory council.

Lyft, Uber’s biggest competitor, joined in the criticism. Then, Lyft pledged to donate $1 million to the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), which recently filed a class action suit on behalf of two detainees at JFK. #DeleteUber picked up steam, and more people began to remove their app and announce their new allegiance to Lyft.

Penn student Gena Basha (C '18) was among the many who joined in the #DeleteUber campaign, soon after see-

ing it on Twitter.

“There’s a whole bunch of reasons why people are upset, like the things that were happening at JFK, and the CEO being on board with the economic team,” she explains.

“I deleted the app in favor of Lyft more so than [an act] against Uber. I have kind of mixed feelings about where Uber stands itself and how it dealt with the things that happened this weekend.”

Others might see deleting the app as a futile, and even petty, form of resistance.

“The least political acts are so politicized,” says Daniel Fradin (C '17). He points out that a business’s smallest tactical move could be blown completely out of proportion, as occurred over the weekend. “It’s hard to know if you even can live an unpo-

liticized life at this time.”

On the other hand, Sophia Griffith–Gorgati (C ’18), like Gena, believes that something as quick and painless as deleting an app can serve a symbolic, if minor, political purpose.

“Next to all the other things that we can and should be doing, it’s pretty minor, but there is a possibility that it will be beneficial, or symbolic,” she stated. “If there’s something to impact society, I think we should do it.”

Sophia herself had already deleted Uber a month ago, after learning of the CEO’s involvement with Trump.

Both Sophia and Gena attended the Women’s March in DC and are involved in resisting Trump’s presidency through other initiatives, like donating to Planned Parent-

hood or protesting with campus groups. Deleting Uber was, for them, an act of protest among others. Soon after the #DeleteUber hashtag started trending, Uber used social media to announce that it condemned the executive order. The company also announced that it would set up a $3 million legal defense fund for immigration defense and services. Then, on Thursday, CEO Kalanick announced that he would be stepping down from Trump’s economic advisory board.

It would seem that a weekend’s backlash had some effect after all.

It was only fitting that the selected films for the February showcase be a tribute to Valentine’s Day. Each film centered on different realms of love—

falling into them, and falling out. I sat in a theater bathed in red and blue light, happily sipping on my complementary pilsner, and watched three short films, ranging from ten to thirty–five minutes each.

Leo Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina principle describes: “Happy families are all alike; every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.” I'd venture to say that this theory applies to relationships, too. Each film presented romantic relationships that had fallen from happiness and were now stumbling through the aftermath. Michael Long’s No One Else features two people seeing each other for the first time since their breakup, struggling to find friendship. Chike Nwabukwu’s Baby Steps depicts two separated parents attempting to get along for the sake of their child. Finally, Steven Gandolfo’s Like. depicts a neurotic twenty–something stuck in a miserable relationship, fantasizing about a girl he met via Facebook. Each film contained unhappy people, all subtly discontent in their different ways.

The cinematography and production value undeniably elevated certain films. Understandably so, as these projects were low–budget, which often resulted in muffled audio or editing glitches. This being said, the weaker points of the films seem to have just been a result of carelessness and inattention. Michael Long revealed in a Q&A session post–viewing

that he completed his project in under a day. At times, it seemed as though a bit more attention would have seasoned the film.

Long was dependent on his theory that intimacy is most effectively conveyed through close shots. And this showed, as his film only had about three or four wide shots throughout the entire ten–minute movie.

The combination of low–budget production and unvarying filming techniques ultimately resulted in his film packing a less powerful punch than it had the potential to land.

Every one of the films seemed to prioritize visual allure over realistic dialogue or acting. This was true for the writing in Steven Gandolfo’s film Like. in its careless insensitivity. There were multiple times when his characters comedically referred to online dating as a gateway for girls getting raped. If more time had been dedicated to developing the characters, such instances of poor taste could have been avoided. That being said, some of the most striking moments of these films were when there was no dialogue—just visuals. Where the acting or the dialogue tripped, the film's cinematography glittered through.

This showcase would be a wonderful evening activity to do with friends or family. The entire event only lasted about an hour and twenty minutes, and like I said—free beer!

They say and do absurd things and put themselves in even more absurd situations, like being forced into indentured servitude at a co–op or holding a party to wait out Hurricane Wanda. Skip your ab workout for a few hits of your roommate's bong and an episode or two of Broad City.

Everything about Parks and Rec is better with a blunt.

The employees of the Pawnee Parks and Recreation Department are comedic geniuses to begin with, but the jokes get that much better after a few hits. Get ready to appreciate Leslie Knope and laugh at Jerry Gergich in new ways.

Bob's Burgers is about the Belcher family and their struggling burger bar. Each character is awkward in their own way, and they come together to form a loving family unit.

This is a genuinely happy and heartwarming show, made all the better with a joint.

Their son, Herbert Gilchrist, became a painter and published a biography of her mother titled Anne Gilchrist: Life and Writings.

The Lippincott Library was founded in 1929 with a gift from Joanna Wharton Lippincott (1858-1938), daughter of businessman, philanthropist and founder of the Wharton School Joseph Wharton. In 1885, she married Joshua Bertram Lippincott (1857-1940), who worked with Joseph Wharton and inherited J.B. Lippincott Company, a Philadelphia publishing house founded by his father, Joshua Ballinger Lippincott, and became president of the firm in 1911.

Joshua Bertram Lippincott served as a trustee of Penn.

Known as a Surrealist, Dalí portrayed his fellow Spanish artist Picasso (1881-1973) rather realistically in this pencil drawing. The relationship between the two artists was relatively unknown to the public until a 2014 exhibition titled Picasso/Dalí, Dalí/Picasso juxtaposed the two legends side by side. Characterized as “fraught and fruitful,” the story of the two artists is one of “influence, rivalry, and artistic greatness.” According to a review by W Magazine, Dalí was inspired by Cubist works and Picasso by Dalí’s 1929 solo exhibition. Although they disagreed about the importance of the Surrealists, Dalí had written about 100 letters and postcards to Picasso, while Picasso reportedly paid Dalí’s travel to New York for his first exhibition.

AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE HUMAN PSYCHE

How far would you go in the name of radio?

A tiny, too–warm room on the South Street bridge, containing an audio mixer and two friends. No more than three songs in a row. No breaks.

Harry Smith (C’18) and David Reinis (C’18), hosts of WQHS’s “Kickin’ It with Harry and David,” did 24 hours of live radio and lived to tell the tale.

While hosting a three–and– a–half hour show in July (a departure from their usual two hours), Harry and David floated the idea of one day staying on the radio for nearly seven times as long—that is, an entire day.

“Why stop at three? It was just one of those things that we said in the moment,” Smith said. “We thought that since it was funny, we should follow it through to its logical conclusion.” *** Smith and Reinis have been the official hosts of the twohour “Kickin’ It” since the first semester of their sophomore year. However, they’ve unofficially hosted the show for a little longer than that; their origin story exemplifies what Reinis calls the “wacky and ridiculous” character of “Kickin’ It.” The two had wanted a show since the first semester of their freshman year, but their repeated emails on the subject never received a response through the semester and into their second semester.

Then, as Smith says, they took things into their own hands.

Reinis and Smith considered the schedule carefully, found a time during which no shows were scheduled and traipsed over to the WQHS station to successfully inaugurate “Kickin’ It.”

The two friends officially applied to host a show the following semester and finally received their own program. Now radio veterans, they had no issues taking control of the station for their self–titled “24–HOUR SHOW EXTRAVAGANZA.” The idea for the 24–hour show stemmed from a realization the two had during the July show about what Smith terms the “runner’s high” of radio. “When you hit the two– or three–hour mark, it becomes more natural,” Reinis said. “It’s goofy fun.”

At a certain point, the emotional impact of everything is magnified: what might be small joys in life become major accomplishments. “I nearly started crying at the sunrise,” Reinis said. “It was the joy of seeing the sun again, of reaching a landmark—and I’d been promised chicken biscuits.”

It wasn’t all highs and lows, though—mostly due to the fact that it was rarely just Reinis and Smith in the room. Both attest that the continued presence of friends and fellow radio hosts were indispensable in their 24–hour journey of survival.

Reinis extrapolates this realization to their regular two–hour show. “Guests are super important, generally,” Reinis said.

“We can do an alright show by ourselves, but most of our best ones feature somebody else.”

“If anything,” Smith adds, “it was a production of teamwork.”

Tell us how you really feel, Amy G. Penn President Amy Gutmann performed the popular anthem “Fuck Donald Trump” last night during a study break hosted at her house.

The performance followed a string of statements critical of the Trump administration, including a speech on College Green last week, where Gutmann called President Trump’s executive order on immigration “injurious to our work.”

Students at the study break were thrown off by the surprise rendition. Jane Newberg (C '19) said, “I honestly couldn’t believe it. There we

were, eating hummus and carrot sticks and trying to get selfies with Amy G, and all of a sudden she just busts out a mic and starts rapping.”

Others were merely struck by the ferocity—and quality—of Gutmann’s performance. Marcus Robbins (C '20) said, “I’ve literally never seen someone rap like that.

She was so intense, it was crazy. Shouting, fist pumping, jumping up and down— it was nuts.”

Robbins added that Gutmann tried to get the students present to rap along with her, with varying de-

Street reached out to Gutmann for comment. She responded with a list of upcoming events she plans to host, which include a protest against the existence of Wharton in light of President Trump’s graduation from the school, and a possible removal of the sorority Kappa Alpha Theta from the campus, to send a clear message to Trump’s daughter, PROUDLY ANNOUNCE THAT YOU'VE DELETED and recent Penn graduate UBER OFF OF YOUR PHONE. It’s one of the biggest clubs on campus, but you won't see its members flyering on Locust anytime soon.

The "Penn 1% Club," or as its members call it, "Penn," is a club for those students whose income brackets are in the top 1% of the country. The club is co–ed and has no application process, besides submitting your most recent tax returns. If you prefer to keep your assets private, multiple receipts from Parc serve just as well.

The club formed in 2011 in response to the Occupy Wall Street movement, founder and President Eduardo Douchebag explained. "There was a lot of hostility towards us on campus at the time," he said. "We realized we needed a place where we could just be ourselves and not feel discriminated against."

This year, the club meets mostly at the President's apartment in New York City. "It's

just nice to be with a community that understands me and where I came from. I don't have to pretend to be something I'm not anymore," said a junior club member.

A senior who asked to remain anonymous elaborated on what he found so appealing about the group: "Outside of here, I feel like I'm speaking a different language. I told someone my jeans were from Rag and Bone, and he goes, ‘What’s that?’ I told another girl I summered in Monaco, and she thought it was on the Jersey Shore. It's exhausting to have to explain yourself all the time."

Right now the group has minimal functions beyond socializing. A source told us there are plans to partner with the Wharton Public Policy Initiative to battle injustice towards the school’s wealthiest students.
