Weekly Report and Newsletter - 28th January 2022 Lancaster Auction Mart: Weekly Sale of Prime Hoggs and Cast Sheep, 24th January 2022 Prime Hoggs The weekly sale of prime hoggs at Lancaster had a similar entry of just over 500 forward, with more numbers needed each week to satisfy our buyers requirements. The overall market average was 262p/kg, with handy weights averaging 268p/kg. Heavy weight hoggs led the way, with Texels to £158 from H Birkett & Son, Overton followed by £153 from Bargh Contractors, Heaton with Oxcliffe and £150 from AG Butler, Hamilton. Heavy weight Suffolks peaked at £145 from G Riley, Bolton le Sands. Handy weighted hoggs today were definitely a sharper trade with Beltex hoggs to 310p/kg or £139 from W&J Parkinson, Garstang with other pens from the same home selling to 300p/kg. Plenty pens of better shaped handy weighted hoggs sold into the one hundred and thirties. Upland lambs saw cheviots sell to £124 from J Bargh & Son, Heaton with Oxcliffe with Mules peaking at £120 from S Wilson & Son, Scotforth and £119 from WI&A Atkinson & Son, Bleasdale. Plenty pens of Mules sold in the one hundreds and teens. Light weight hoggs that were well finished continued to be in strong demand with Continentals regularly 270p/kg plus.

Cast Sheep The cast sheep trade remains very buoyant with vendors urged to sell while the going is good. Texel ewes led the way selling to £149 from D&K Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe with Texel x ewes to £145 from P Lawrenson & Son, Chorley followed by £130 from S Wilson & Son, Scotforth. Plenty more Continental ewes sold in the one twenties.

Masham ewes sold to £124 and £118 from DC Miller, Claughton on Brock with plenty more Mule ewes selling in the region of £110. Hill bred ewes saw Cheviots to £94 from Trevor Foster, Tarlton. Swaledales and Dalesbred ewes sold to £90 from DC Miller, Claughton on Brock. Cast tups today peaked at £146 for Texels from Bargh

Contractors, Heaton with Oxcliffe. With other Texel tups to £132 from WI&A Atkinson & Son, Bleasedale. Upland tups saw Herdwicks sold to £78 from D&K Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe.

J36 Rural Auction Centre: Sale of all Classes of Pigs, Tuesday 25th January 2022 Pigs sell to £182 at North West Auctions Junction 36 The second pig sale of January saw a reduced entry following the previous record sale entry. This sale saw 89 forward in all classes with new customers once again in attendance both buying and selling. The sale commenced with prime pigs which saw an eye-catching pen of Pietrain x hogs from D Nicholson, Cockermouth sell at a well deserved £182 a head with others at £150 a head. Lighter weight gilts from the same home achieved £134 a head.

Northrigg Hill Farm, Carlisle travelled down with a consignment of heavy weigh Large White gilts which met keen interest selling to £132 a head. Prime boars sold to £88 a head for pure bred Saddlebacks from A Preston, Whitehaven. Well bred and well finished prime pigs continue to sell to a premium, this week peaking at 169p/kg with others 149p/kg, 139p/kg and 136p/kg with all sold averaging 118p/kg.

Cull sows continue to be hard work, this week selling to £38 and 13p/kg from JAH Lowe, Bolton.

An abundance of store and weaner pigs sold to £70 for a pure Pietrain boar from D Thackery, Harrogate who sold others at £56, with J&L Tyson, Carnforth selling to £28. Weaners generally sold between £5-£15 depending on breed and quality.

The next sale is on Tuesday 8th February, with includes the anniversary show and sale for prime pigs.

J36 Rural Auction Centre: Weekly Sale of Prime Hoggs and Cast Sheep, Tuesday 25th January 2022 Prime Hoggs There certainly was the full variety in the terms of quality of prime hoggs forward today with well fleshed and heavy hoggs selling to an improved trade. Leading the way today was 60kg hoggs selling to £161. 55kg Texel hoggs sold to £159 from Linda Beck, Haversham with others from the same good home selling to £151 at 49kg. A consignment of heavy weight hoggs from L McCarrick, Chorley sold 60kg Suffolks to £158 and 60kg Texels to £157, with the full consignment averaging £151. Heavy weight hoggs continue to demand a premium at J36 with other leading prices being £153 for Suffolks from JE Read, Hutton Roof and F & SA Edmondson, Ulverston. Texels sold to £149 from J Twigge, Lindale, with plenty more pens of heavy weight hoggs in the one forties. Heavy weight Mule hoggs sold to £145 from NJ Strickland & Son, Whinfell. Better quality hoggs today, continue to sell in excess of the 200p/kg mark with Beltexs peaking at 325p/kg from TE&J Wadsworth & Son, Kendal. Plenty of well fleshed handy weighed hoggs today, sold either side of the 280p/kg mark. Standard weighted Mules sold to £125.50 at 47kg from EW&JR Parkinson, Dunsop Bridge with other pens of Mules to £120 from F&SA Edmondson, Ulverston and £119 from RHM&S Boyren, Ulverston. More Horned lambs on the market today saw Swaledales sell to £115 from F&SA Edmondson, Ulverston with a pen of fifty 40kg Swaledale lambs selling to £101.50 from Fishwick Bros, Longsleddale.

Cast Sheep Another good show of over 500 ewes forward, with all ewes selling to there full value topping at £180 for a pen of Suffolk ewes from T&E Redmayne, Southwaite with others from the same home selling to £165. Texel ewes sold to £149 from AW Crowe, Witherslack with Charollais selling to the same price from JA&LR Wilson, Whicham.

Many of the best continental bred ewes were regularly selling at the £130-£140 mark today. Leister ewes sold to a top of £131 from OR Hodgson, Old Hutton with others to £130 from J&CA Gibson, Selside. Mule ewes sold to a fierce trade topping at £126 from T Ellis, New Hutton with others to £123 from R Butterfield, Newlands. All Mule ewes forward averaged £101 for 102 sold. Cheviot ewes led the hill section selling to £113 from R Pearson, Lindale with Rough Fells selling to £108 from L Potter, Orton. Swaledales sold to £87 from F&SA Edmondson, Ulverston,

with the best regularly selling well into the £80’s and medium types £50-£60.

30 cast rams were forward selling to another fast trade, with Leicester leading the way selling to £199 from Fishwick Bros, Longsleddale with other Leicester to £182 from RA Clegg & LD Bennet, Seathwaite. Texel rams sold to £182 from H Newton Low Levens. All rams forward averaged £122.

J36 Rural Auction Centre: Flock Reduction of in-lamb gimmer hoggs on behalf of EI, EA&TW Wilson & Fortnightly Sale of Store Hoggs, Thursday 27th January 2022 Flock Reduction of in-lamb Gimmer Hoggs The sale commenced with the major flock reduction of Mule and Texel in-lamb hoggs from EI, EA&TW Wilson, Flookburgh the sale attracted much attention and interest from local and travelled customers. The hoggs were scanned in lamb and due in April to Beltex and Texel tups. Mule hoggs commenced the sale and sold to £155, £145, £142 twice, £140 and £138 five times. Texel cross hoggs were next peaking at £150 with others to £145 and £140. There was plenty of interest in all classes of in-lamb sheep, with upcoming sale of 1000 commercial in-lamb sheep at the Diamond Delights on Saturday the 29th January followed by the next sale of in-lamb sheep on Thursday 10th February with entries now being taken.

Store Hoggs An entry of 1314 store hoggs were forward, saw a broad spectrum of quality and size on offer, with purchasers looking for all types. Once again best quality store hoggs sold in excess of the £100 mark, leading the way today the consignment from BJ Bowness, Kendal selling to £119. Nest call at £116 was Texel hoggs from PG Thornton, Scorton with Suffolks from the same home selling to £115.50. This was closely followed by other Suffolk lambs to £114.50 from J Dickinson, Milnthorpe. Texel lambs sold to £111 from T&M Halhead, Priest Hutton, £110 from

LM&JH Bowes, Orton and £109 from WR Clarke & Partners, Yealand Redmayne. Charollais hoggs peaked at £108.50 from M Woodhouse, Millom. Upland hoggs saw Cheviots sell to £101.50 from M Allen, Carnforth with a pen of 55 Mules selling to £99 from AW&AM Clarke, Windermere. Followed by other Mules to £98 from M Allen and £97 from KD Harryman, Keswick. Horned hoggs saw Scottish Blackfaces sell to £85 and £82 from Coward Brother, Kirkby in Furness with Swaledales peaking at £70 and £69 from A Chard, Roeburndale. Rough Fells sold to £69.50 from RJ&OB Simpson, Longsleddale.

Plenty of demand still for store hoggs with the next sale on Thursday 10th February, entries are now being taken and requested so that buyers can be informed of number.

Lancaster Auction Mart: Sale of Calves, Stirks, OTM's and Store Cattle - Friday 28th January 2022 Calves & Stirks Fridays weekly calf sale saw the biggest ring full of buyers seen in recent weeks, ensuring a better trade all round.

AW&AM Park, Ellel made top spot this week with a British Blue bull at £480, who also sold a British Blue heifer at £420. TM Townley, Over Wyresdale continues their good run of calves, this week selling at eight week old Charolais bull at £420. A consignment of Aberdeen Angus calves from T&CM Kelsall, Chipping saw bulls to £395 and heifers to £305, with all Aberdeen Angus’s today averaging £345. J&G Thornley, Roseacre sold their usual run of quality British Blue heifers to £380 and £335. Friesian bulls from Eddie and Angie Newsham, Conder Green achieved £260 twice, with younger sorts to £150 from H&SD Cornthwaite, Garstang. All Friesians forward averaged £120. Fleckvieh bulls from JR Newsham, Conder Green achieved £380 with Montbeliardes going on to sell for £360.

The monthly sale of stirks saw buyers keen to replace stock sold in the store ring, with trade being up on the month. Achieving top price was S Ashcroft, Euxton with a pair of Aberdeen Angus steers at £855, with other cattle from this same good home achieving £835 for Charolais steers, £825 for Limousin steers and completing his run with Montbeliardes to £800. Hereford steers realised £805 from E Lund & Son, Ingleton. Dan and Jenny Hey, Cockerham had a well grown British Blue steer at £730. O&H Melling, Treales run of cattle saw Aberdeen Angus bulls to £740 and Fleckvieh steers to £680. A pen full of Aberdeen Angus heifers achieved £740 from JH Thwaites, Penrith with S Ashcroft to £700 for a Limousin. A trio of Charolais heifers from FW Rhodes, Ellel achieved £630. More stirks are required for our next sale on the 25th February to satisfy buyers requirements.

Store Cattle The weekly sale of store cattle saw 244 go under Gary’s Gavel, with trade being as strong as ever with buyers keen to keep their sheds full. Topping the trade today was regular Lancaster supporter PM&ST Entwistle, Abbeystead with a stylish Limousin steer at £1500. Not far behind was a pen full of well fed Charolais steers from R&C Parkinson, Hambleton, not to be out done by his father, Joe Parkinson, Hambleton also achieved £1440 for a pen of Charolais steers. Other Limousin steers sold to £1380 from H Chapman, Middleton. British Blue steers today saw trade to £1370 from JD Bracken, Garstang. Aberdeen Angus cattle are always good to sell at Lancaster, with steers peaking at £1340 from PM&ST Entwistle, Abbeystead. Dairy bred steers saw a trio of Fleckviehs sell to £1320 from R H Dodgson, Carnforth, with Friesians achieving £1180 from K&DE Woodhouse Ellel. All steers today averaged £1175.

Store heifers today saw the trade top at £1400 from K&DE Woodhouse, Ellel for a pair of British Blues. R&C Parkinson, Hambleton competed his good run of cattle with a pair of Charolais heifers at £1380. Herefords today saw J&JM Walmsley, Pilling achieve £1360, with this vendor also selling a pair of Aberdeen Angus heifers to £1270. All heifers today averaged £1087.

OTM Cattle OTM cattle today saw a reduced entry on the week, much to the disappointment of our full ring of buyers. OTM dairy cattle today saw DJ Townley, Stodday grossing at £1343.05 or 174.5p/kg, with others at £1110 from RT Halhead, Cockerham or 149p/kg. Many more Friesians cows sold around the 145p/kg – 149p/kg range.

Montbeliarde cows from JK&BJ Birkett, Morecambe achieved £1122.98 with Fleckviehs to £1117.85 from RT Halhead, Cockerham. Beef bred cattle saw Limousins sell to £1329.48 or 177p/kg from JA&KJ Allen, Ings.

Simmental cows from JB&AH Coates, Cowan Bridge achieved 184.5p/kg or £1243. Only a handful of OTM heifers in the market today saw Friesians to £1020 from K Robinson, Farlton and 181p/kg from J&N Hull & Son, Winmarleigh.
