Weekly Report and Newsletter - 18th March 2022 Lancaster Auction Mart: Weekly Sale of Prime Hoggs, Cast Sheep and Sheep with Lambs at Foot, 14th March 2022 Prime Hoggs More hoggs forward on the market today, saw an entry of 832 forward sell to an overall market average of 240p/kg, with handy weights averaging 250p/kg. A large number of out of specification hoggs in the market today, especially heavy weight hoggs which have seen a reduction in trade nationally with big numbers forward everywhere. Andrew Butler led the way today selling Texel hoggs to £138 and Beltex hoggs to £132. The consignment from T&CM Kelsall & Sons, Chipping sold to £136 and £131. A run of heavy weight hoggs from W&J Livesey, Inskip sold to £133, £130.50 and £130. Upland hoggs saw Dalesbred bred peak at £128 from WI&A Atkinson & Son, Bleasdale. Mule hoggs peaked at £119 from T&CM Kelsall & Sons, Chipping. Plenty of pens of Mules sold between £110-£114.

Cast Sheep A few less cast sheep were forward today, with the trade remaining buoyant. Texel ewes sold to £172 from S Wilson & Son, Scotforth who sold Dorsets to £146, Cheviot Mules to £136 and Mules to £135. Masham ewes peaked at £140 from T&CM Kelsall & Sons, Chipping with Mules ewes peaking at the same price from Jason Moss, Carnforth. Plenty of Mule ewes regularly sold in the one twenties with bigger ewes into the one thirties.

Horned sheep saw Swaledales sell to £87 from WI&A Atkinson & Son, Bleasdale, plenty of average condition Swaledale ewes sold around the seventy-pound mark.

Cast tups remain a strong trade with Zwartbles selling to £154 from Wannop Farms, Morecambe. Swaledales to £136 from KM&KJ Curwen, Abbeystead and Leicesters to the same price from WI&A Atkinson & Son, Bleasdale.

Sheep with Lambs at Foot The weekly sale of sheep with lambs at foot at Lancaster saw the trade remain buoyant for the families forward, as buyers continue to look for good quality outfits with strong growing lambs. All forward today averaged £82.71.

The consignment from J&R Waller, Killington led the way selling to £280 for aged Continental ewes with Suffolk twin lambs at foot, Continental ewes with single lambs at foot from the same home sold to £215 and £208, with the compete consignment averaging £93.92 a life. Aged Mule ewes with twin Texel lambs at foot sold to £230 from D&K Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe with aged Mule ewes with single lambs to £155 from M&JM Redmayne, Balderstone.

Lancaster Auction Mart: Monthly Shows & Sale of Pedigree & Commercial Dairy Cattle, Tuesday 15th March 2022 Northwest Auctions had its monthly sale of dairy cattle on Tuesday 15th March which once again saw a high quality of new calved heifers and cows forward from local vendors. The pre sale show was judged by Miss Saffron Newsham, Conder Green who awarded the champion rosette to Pennine Crocus 297 shown by Messrs Drinkall Bros, Abbeystead with this heifer later selling to the judge for a final bid of £2100. The reserve championship rosette was awarded to the 1st prize cow Wyredale Jonas Marjorie 55 from MJ & H Atkinson, Quernmore. This cow fresh into her 2nd lactation and giving 38 litres sold at £2050.

Other heifers to break the £2000 barrier included Pennine Moonbeam 189 from Messrs Drinkall Bros along with Phoenix Princess Leia from AE & A Swale, Blackburn. Heifers of a more Friesian type sold to £2000 for Pennie Peace 872 from Messrs Drinkall, Abbeystead.

J36 Rural Auction Centre: Weekly Sale of Prime Hoggs, Cast Sheep and Sheep with Lambs at Foot, Tuesday 15th March 2022 Prime Hoggs There was a much-improved hogg trade then what had been anticipated with an entry of 775 forward selling to an overall market average of 248p/kg. Handy weighted hoggs continue to be in strongest demand selling to an average of 260p/kg. Best conformation hoggs sold in excess of the 300p/kg mark today. They peaked today at 335p/kg or £146 from CI Briggs, Ambleside for shapely Beltexs. This was followed by other Beltex hoggs selling from JA Alderson, Barras. The Texel hogg trade today was topped by DA Wilcock, Wigan selling to £136 or 302p/kg, with Charollais hoggs from the same home selling to £132 and £131. The heavy weight hogg trade continues to be sticky with a large number currently on the market peaking at £135 from JB Airey, Kendal with plenty more selling in the one hundred and twenties. Hill bred hoggs saw heavy Cheviots peak at £121 from J Allonby and Son, Grayrigg. Mule hoggs peaked at £117 from RJ & R Holden, Millom with others to £114.50 from G Beresford and Son, Hellifield. Hill hoggs saw Dalesbreds to £113 from R Capstick & Son, Ingleton, Lonks to £111.50 from DA Wilcock, Wigan, Herdwicks to £110.50 from M Cliff, Carnforth and Swaledales to £110 from JA Alderson, Barras. Nine active buyers looking for hoggs today in which more could have been handled to the advantage of vendors.

There was a nice entry of 300 ewes forward with all selling to another buoyant trade at J36. Pure bred Texel ewes led the way selling to an impressive £210 from R&E Ladds, Kendal. Other Texel ewes sold to £176 from J Twigge, Lindale. Many of the best continental bred ewes were regularly selling between the £160 - £170 mark. The next level down between £125 - £130. Mule ewes saw another jump in trade with the best selling well into the £130’s, topping at £143 from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale. Medium fit Mule ewes sold between the £115 - £120 mark.

Hill ewes saw keen bidding from all buyers with Cheviots selling to a top of £126 from HR&KA Hodgson, Barbon, with others too £117 from RW Nicholson, Lupton. Rough Fells sold to £111 from WB Kellet, Pilling. Swaledales sold to a top of £108 for a ring full from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale.

A bumper entry of over 40 cast rams forward, with all selling to a massive premium. B&D Willison & Son, Levens lead the way with their impressive run of tups, selling Charollais too £214. Texel tups sold to £208 from JA & CA Gibson, Selside, with Cheviots to £136 from K Gregory, Carnforth and Herdwicks topping at £110 from A Hartley, Broughton In Furness.

Sheep With Lambs at Foot There was an increased entry of sheep with lambs at foot with seventy families forward. The ever spiralling costs is the first things on many buyers lips with many waiting for the grass to appear. The trade for powerful ewes with strong lambs was very good, with buyers cautious of purchasing outfits with younger lambs. Aged Continental ewes with twins lambs at foot lead the way with the consignment from J & R Waller, Killington selling to £250, £248 and £245. Other leading consignments saw Texel ewes with young Beltex lambs selling to £250 from Chris Slinger and Laura Eaton, Middleton whose Continental ewes with singles selling £208 and £190. Mule ewes aged with strong Texel twins sold to £238 from TW Gorst, Crook and £230 from D & K Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe.

Plenty of pens of aged Mule ewes with younger twin lambs selling between £190 and £200.

J36 Rural Auction Centre: Sale of Calves, Stirks, OTM's and Store Cattle, Thursday 17th March 2022 Calves & Stirks

A nice entry of 90 calves were forward with a two-tier trade seen today, the best well reared continental calves sold an impressive trade with younger calves being harder placed with the ever-increasing costs involved with rearing.

Once again British Blue bulls led the way with a top of £400 twice, firstly from A Pickthall, New Hutton and then

by CM & CS Chappelhow, Clifton Dykes. Other noted prices were £395 from A Pickthall, New Hutton and £390 from JW&TE Sharp, Lyth. An impressive average of £320 for British Blue bulls today for 20 sold. Limousin bulls sold to £365 from RJ&KR Wilkinson, Levens. Native bred calves had more demand from buyers with Aberdeen Angus bulls selling to a top of £355 from Wannop Farms, Morecambe.

The heifer calf trade saw a younger show forward, with British Blues peaking at £300 from RJ&KR Wilkinson, Leavens. Other British Blues sold to £290 from JW&TE Sharp, Lyth. Limousin heifer calves sold to £295 from JS&IS Wilson, Whitbeck.

Dairy bred bull calves saw more demand with Montbeliardes selling to £205 from JS&IM Wilson, Whitbeck, with others from the same home selling to £200.

A young show of Black and Whites were forward with a top of £80 from W Garnett& Son, Milnthorpe with others too £72 from JW&TE Sharp, Lyth.

A bumper entry of 85 stirks were forward with well reared stirks selling to a premium. A cracking run of suckler bred bulls from S Whitehead, Middleton sold to £990 & £970. A Blonde bullock from B&HM Wilson, Selside sold too £910. Aberdeen Angus steers sold to £820 from BJ&M Tomlinson, Preston. A lovely run of nice reared stirks from R Greenwood, Skipton saw British Blue bullocks selling to £715 and a pen full of 5-month-old British Blue bulls to £605. Friesian stirks were keenly bid for peaking at £555 from R Greenwood, Skipton with other pens of Friesian bullocks selling to £510 from PD&PJ Mason, Burton in Kendal.

Store Cattle The sale of store cattle today saw a top price of £1295 achieved for a Lim X Steer from T&SB Proctor, Kirkby Stephen closely followed by TW Nelson & Son, Stainton selling Lim X Steers at £1290 and RJ&R Holden, Millom

achieving £1260. Well grown steers regularly selling at £1100-£1200 with yearlings £960-£1080. Native sired steers sold to a top price of £1165 for a South Devon X from AT Threlkeld, Satterthwaite with Aberdeen Angus X achieving £1050 from IR Cooper, Penrith. Younger suckler bred steers sold to £900 for 6 months old Charolais X from IR Cooper, Penrith with Hereford X also achieving £900 from D&E Whittaker, Quernmore. Dairy bred steers sold to £945 for a Dairy Shorthorn from M Bateman & Son, Sedbergh with NRW X selling to £900 from JE Wightman, Lupton and Holstien Friesians £795 from RM Mason & Sons, Levens.

Heifers sold to £1245 from T&SB Proctor, Kirkby Stephen who also sold heifers for £1205. The stronger end of heifers £1000-£1050 with Native sires selling to £1175 for South Devon X from AT Threlkeld and Hereford X £1085 from M&S Blease, Carnforth. Yearlings sold to £900 for a Simmental X from MW&M Hodgson, Cartmel Fell with Lim X selling to £890 from MW&MR Black, Staveley. Younger heifers 8-10 months old finding keen interest as buyers look towards turn out.

Store bulls sold to a top of £885 for Lim X from M Gibson, Garsdale with young sucker bred bulls selling to £800.

A large entry of dairy bulls sold to £685 for Holstien Friesian from JH Barker & Son, Haverthwaite.

OTM Cattle North West Auctions saw a fast and competitive trade for all classes and types of cull cows and OTM cattle at NWA J36, with eight active buyers all keen to fill orders. An overall market average today of 165p/kg was achieved with over half the entry being dairy cows.

Cull cows sold to a top price of 219.5p/kg for an Aberdeen Angus x from MJ&J Handley, Sedbergh. Closely followed by HE&M Henderson, Dent selling a Limousin x at 209.5p/kg. Other heavy and well finished cows regularly selling at 172 p/kg – 185p/kg, with keen interest in cows suitable for further finishing.

Dairy cows sold to a top price of 179p/kg for a Holstein Friesian from S&M Cooper, Leece with others at 174.5p/kg from Lawkland Hall Farm Partnership, Lawkland. Medium fleshed dairy cows regularly sold at 140p/kg – 155p/kg, with leaner ex parlour cows 120p/pk – 134p/kg.

Top grossing cull cow today achieving £1466 was a Holstein Friesian from S&M Cooper, Leece with other dairy cows selling to £1314 from RJ&ML Lowrey, Cark Cartmel.

Beef cows sold to a top of £1292 for a Limousin x from HE&M Henderson, Dent.

OTM heifers sold to a top price of 244p/kg and £1102 for a Limousin x from MW&MR Black, Staveley with dairy heifers selling to 174.5p/kg for a Holstein Friesian from B&MJ Nelson &Son, Milnthorpe and £1087 for a Dairy Shorthorn from JR Handley, Whinfell.

OTM Steers sold to 229p/kg for a Limousin x from T&SB Procter, Kirkby Stephen with a British Blue x from RW Robinson & Son, Farleton selling at £1454.

Lancaster Auction Mart: Sale of Calves, Stirks, OTM's and Store Cattle, Friday 18th March 2022 Calves & Weanlings Reports throughout the week said that calf prices had been less money but Lancaster bucked the trend and enjoyed a better trade than expected as was met with the busiest ring of buyers seen for some time. A selection of weanling Herefords from TE&M Kidd, Ellel saw bulls sell to £455, £440, £435, £420 and £390. Hereford bull calves at seven weeks old sold to £300 from J Gerrard & Son, Thurnham. Store Cattle Lancaster enjoyed another strong store cattle trade with a larger entry of over 200 forward, a pair of Aberdeen Angus bullocks led the way selling to £1510 from TC Whiteside, Pilling with others from the same home to £1480.

This was followed by other Aberdeen Angus bullocks to £1470 from J&H Davis, Cabus. A pen of four Limousin bullocks from H Chapman & Son, Middleton sold to £1490. A pen of five British Blue bullocks from C&B Lowther, Over Wyresdale sold to £1420.

A pair of British Blue heifers sold to £1460 from M Shepherd & Sons, Pilling. Aberdeen Angus heifers peaked at £1360 for a pen of three from J Oddie & Son, Balderstone.

Dairy bollocks sold to £1330 for Friesians from WS Burrows & Son, Silverdale.

OTM Cattle There is no need to go else where with your cast cows as the 96 forward today average £1142 a head or 170p/kg, proving that Lancaster is one of the counties leading centres for cast cattle and more easily could have been handled to the vendors advantage. A strong trade for OTM heifers today saw a consignment of pure Limousins from W Salisbury, Treales sold to 254.5p/kg or £1621, 234.5p/kg or £1371 with Pure Limousin cows from the same home selling to 219.5p/kg or £1470. Limousin x heifers sold to 249.5p/kg or £1546 from R Capstick, Ingleton. Holstein Frisian OTM heifers peaked at 214.5p/kg from EE Thornton & Sons, Heaton and J Bargh & Son, Heaton with Oxcliffe. OTM dairy heifers peaked at £1430 a head from H Halhead & Son, Nether Kellet. OTM Steers sold to 239.5p/kg for Limousins from ST Birkett & Son, Carnforth. OTM steers sold to a top price per head of £1575 and £1497 for Limousins from JF&AW Sutton, Longsleddale. Plenty of beef cows today sold in excess of the 200p/kg mark. The best dairy cow today sold in the region of 180p/kg peaking at 187.5p/kg from MD Close & Son, Arkholme. Top price dairy cow today was an impressive £1535 from Strickland Hill Farming, Witherslack.
