Weekly Report and Newsletter - 18th February 2022 Lancaster Auction Mart: Weekly Sale of Prime Hoggs and Cast Sheep, 14th February 2022 Prime Hoggs Prime hogg numbers at Lancaster remain buoyant with 538 forward, selling to an overall market averaged of 251p/kg. We had hoped to report of a flying Valentines trade but unfortunately this was not the case, as nationwide centre report on a steady trade. Handy weighted export hoggs continue to be in the most demand and endured little difference from the previous weeks. It was the heavy weight hoggs which were hardest hit, as big numbers come forward following on from the kind winter months. Texel hoggs from young shepherdess Olivia Gorst, Bay Horse led the way selling to a top of £136 at 50kg, purchased by a local butcher. Next call at £135 were Beltex hoggs from R&DL Cornthwaite, Nateby, whom had other pens to £130. Charollais hoggs sold to £133 from AG butler, Hambleton purchased by Mckuhens Butchers, Liverpool. Closely followed by other Charollais hoggs to £132 from A&FM Bolland & Sons, Ellel. Noted Texel prices were; £131 from R Collinge & Son, Kirkham and £130 twice from GH Sanderson & Family, Catforth. Texel hoggs sold to a top pence per kilo of 259 from local young shepherd Angus Brown, Littledale. Well fleshed light weight hoggs continue to be in good demand, upland hoggs today saw Mules sell to £120 from A&FM Bolland & Sons, Ellel, with 45kg Mashams to £112 from DC Miller, Claughton on Brock. Horned hoggs peaked at £109.50 weighing 43kg from Angus Brown. Cast Sheep A few less cast ewes forward today which saw the trade peak at £122 for Suffolk ewes from G Riley, Bolton le Sands. Texel cross ewes realised £120 from S Wilson & Son, Scotforth followed by £118 from P Rossell, Scorton. Mule ewes peaked at £118 from S Wilson & Son, Scotforth, with plenty of pens of big Mules between £100 and £110. Horned ewes sold to £76 from PG Thornton, Scorton.
