Weekly Report and Newsletter - 12th November J36 Rural Auction Centre: November Online Machinery Sale The Monthly Collective Machinery Sale saw over 1500 lots entered with a wide range of items on offer and selling well.

Tractors this month sold to £5600 for a Massey Ferguson 165, with a David Brown 885 selling at £4000, an Massey Ferguson 550 achieved £3300 and a David Brown 880 sold at £1250. Other agricultural items saw a 22ft low loader trailer sell for £4200, Kverneland 4ft plough £2000, auger feed bucket £1550, West Rural Spreader £1300 and Parmiter post knocker £900.

Livestock equipment saw an Ifor Williams livestock trailer sell at £1900, 12ft cattle trailer reaching £1100, cattle crush at £840, creep feeder £600, sheep trimming stand £380 and lamb scales at £360.

Others items of interest included a Barford dumper selling at £2900, Ford Fiesta van £2500, Logic salt spreader £1400, pallets of sandstone £300, pallets of slate £280 and 400 gallon water troughs £240.

Lancaster Auction Mart: Sale of Prime Lambs and Cast Sheep - Monday 8th November 2021 PRIME LAMBS Lancaster had a large entry of 809 prime lambs forward this week, selling to an improved overall market average of 261p/kg or £115.80. Well fleshed fed lambs demanded a premium today and were eagerly bid for.

It was a consignment of heavy weight lambs from RT Owen, Bold that led the way selling Texels to £170 twice, £166 and £156. Other heavy weight Texels sold to £161 from S&J France, Over Wyresdale. Followed by the consignment from KA Purtill, Wigan selling Texels to £154 and £148. Also breaking the £150 barrier at £151 was TR Prickett, Hutton Roof. Heavy weight Charollais lambs sold to a top of £140 from M Archer & Son, Bolton Le Sands, with heavy weight Suffolks also peaking at £140 from GF&EE Holt, Chipping, who also sold other pens to £137. Beltex lambs peaked at £137 from S Wilson & Son, Scotforth. Lancasters busy ring of butcher buyers ensured better quality lambs regularly sold in excess of 300p/kg mark. Beltex lambs topped at 330p/kg from Ian Richardson, Catforth.

As to be expected there is a large number of hill lambs coming onto the market. Which saw Cheviot lambs sell to £136 from J Bargh & Son, Heaton with Oxcliffe, Mule lambs peaked at £131.50 from S&J France, Over Wyresdale.

Horned lambs this week topped at £100 for Swaledales from KM&KJ Curwen, Abbeystead.

CAST EWES A small entry of ewes forward today, as numbers in this area begin to dry up before farmers start scanning their sheep. The trade continues to go from strength to strength with a consignment of Texel x ewes from WA&LM Jenkinson, Stalmine selling to £161 and £149. This was followed by Texel ewes to £148 from MP Berry, Stalmine with other Texel x ewes to £136 from RT Owen, Bold. Mule ewes sold to £102 and £101 from TB Carter, Preesall.

Hill bred ewes saw Cheviots peak at £80 from ST&J Gorst, Littledale.

Just a couple of tups forward today saw Texels sell to £130 from WA&LM Jenkinson, with Cheviots to £99 from GJ&CA Penellum, Millom.

STORE LAMBS A strong entry of store lambs forward today, was met with the most buyers and demand seen for many weeks at Lancaster. A consignment of short-term Texel lambs from CM&CA Jackson, Caton, sold to £99, £97 and £89.

This was followed by Continental store lambs to £88 from Ian Richardson, Catforth. All store lambs forward today in Lancaster averaged an impressive £89.

J36 Rural Auction Centre: Sale of Prime Lambs and Cast Sheep - Tuesday 9th November 2021 PRIME LAMBS The weekly sale of prime lambs saw a spike in numbers this week with the trade going from strength to strength. An entry of 1849 sold to an overall market average of 270p/kg. Leading the way this week was the consignment from Hannah Sowerby, Appleby selling heavy weight Beltex lambs to £172 and £165.

This was closely followed by heavy weight Texel lambs selling to £160 twice from JN & DJ Bowes, Crook and E Dodgson, Kendal followed by others selling to £158 from Long and Knipe, Grange Over Sands and £156 from DW Hodgson, Cartmel Fell. Heavy weight Suffolk lambs peaked at £155.50 from M & YS Barker, Halton.

Plenty of good quality heavy weight lambs sold around the £150 mark. All lambs forward weighing over 52kg averaged £138, with 45kg to 51kg lambs averaging £130.78. Handy weighted export Continental lambs were in big demand with well finished lambs regularly selling in excess of 280p/kg. Top pence per kilo this week saw Beltex lambs peaked at 340p/kg from KJ Knight, Kirkby in Furness, with others to 338p/kg from AR & BJ Thompson, Selside and 335p/kg from Alan Thompson, Carnforth with plenty pens of good quality Beltex lambs selling in excess of the 300p/kg mark. Mule lambs saw plenty of demand and eagerly bid for selling to a top of £128 for 50kg Mule lambs from John Twigge, Lindale followed by 49kg Mules selling to £127.50 from R Capstick, Ingleton. All Mules forward averaged up at £116 or 258p/kg. Horned lambs sold to £98 for Swaledale lambs from PE & KA Sowerby, Kirkby Stephen.

CAST SHEEP A larger entry of 700 ewes were forward with a mixed show on offer, with meated ewes being £5-£10 dearer on the week. Pure bred ewes were keenly bid for and sold to a top of £145 for a Texel from FE&CM Robinson & Son, Crooklands, followed by other Texels to £138 from AW Crowe, Grange Over Sands. Beltex ewes sold to £134 from RA Batty, Selside. Suffolk ewes sold to £127 from MJ Shepherd, New Biggin. Many of the best Continental ewes

were regularly selling well into the £130 mark, with medium types selling well over the £100 mark. Mule ewes saw another lift in trade today with a top of £109 from TM&G Dobson, Crossthwaite. Cheviot Mules sold to £104 from TH&DM Cornthwaite & Son, Grange over Sands. Medium meated Mule ewes were regularly selling to the £80-£85 pound mark. A run of Masham ewes from RL&OB Simpson, Longsleddale sold to a top of £97.

Hill ewes continue to a see the biggest lift in trade with Cheviots topping at £109 from R&J Moorehouse, Grange over Sands. With Dalesbreds selling to £82 from JA Bennett, Longsleddale. Herdwicks sold to £79 from JG&PH Thompson, Selside. A lean show of Swaledale ewes were forward, with meat selling to a massive premium, a top of £76 twice from JA&CA Gibson, Selside and J Bennett, Longsleddale. Medium type Swaledale ewes sold at the £40-£50 pound mark.

More cast rams were on the market today with Texel rams selling to £166 from K Armer, Kendal. Other Texel rams sold to £124 from TM&D Dodgson, Crossthwaite.

J36 Rural Auction Centre: Sale of Prime, Cast, Store & Weaner Pigs - Tuesday 9th November 2021 The first pig sale in November saw 75 forward, with an ever-increasing number of buyers and sellers from throughout the Northern Counties and Scotland. Vendors are encouraged to continue to pre enter pigs to allow for promotion of the sale.

Prime pigs sold to a top price of £145 for a Tamworth gilt from EA Harrison, Penrith who sold others at £140.

Heavy weight Large White gilts from E Lawson, Sedbergh sold at £108, with medium weight gilts to £99 from JM

Navesey, Blackburn. Prime hoggs sold to £138 for Large White x from A Prickett, Farlton, with British Lop x hoggs from GM&DJ Pye, Arkholme achieving £110. Buyers were keen to secure well finished pigs with gilts and hoggs selling to a premium.

A top p/kg of 121 was achieved for a pen of Large White x gilts from JM Navesey, Blackbur, with prime hoggs to 120p/kg from A Prickett and prime boars to 93p from AP Simth, Brookhouse. All prime pigs today averaged 105p/kg.

After the bumper entry from the last sale, there was only one cull sow forward today selling to £55 and 25p/kg from P Crayston, Ulverston.

Weaners and stores continue to attached keen interest, with store pigs selling to £54 for Large White x boars from E Nickson, Preston with weaners achieving £28 from R Nettleton, Penrith.

J36 Rural Auction Centre: Fortnightly Sale of Calves, Store and OTM Cattle & Second Show & Sale of Suckled Calves - Thursday 11th November 2021 CALVES & STIRKS Calf and stirk numbers continue to go from strength to strength at J36 with an offering of 122 calves’ forwards to suits all buyers’ requirements and 76 stirks.

There was the full spectrum of calves on offer today with Continental bull calves in the strongest demand with calves with plenty of growth about them in strong demand and smaller types selling in line with other centres with a large offering of native heifer calves forward. Once again, a cracking consignment of British Blue calves from JW & TE Sharpe, Lyth saw bulls sell to £400 and £395. This was closely followed by £370 for British Blue bulls from A Pickthall, New Hutton. Plenty of strong beef bulls selling in the mid the three hundreds. A run of Montbeliarde from JA&IM Wilson, Whitbeck sold to £320 with others from this run selling well into the two hundred pound mark. A younger show of Black and Whites were forward with rearing types topping at £70 from WB Winder, Broughton in Furness.

A proper selection of stirks were on offer today, with well grown stirks continuing to sell to the vendors full advantage and lesser types selling to a mixed trade. Topping the stirk trade was RG Robinson, Farlton who sold Aberdeen Angus bullocks to £940, this good farm also sold Aberdeen Angus heifers to £845. British Blue bullocks sold to £850 from J&R Waller, Killington, Continental bullocks ranging from the 8-10 months old were selling well into the £800 mark. Weaned stirks looked well sold today, with a good run of Limousin heifers at 4 months selling to £600 from S&A Wood, Pennington. More buyers were keen to purchase Black and White bullocks, with a full ring from RG Robinson selling at £645.

SUCKLER CALVES The pre sale show saw an excellent run of suckler calves put before our judge Mr Ian Wainwright, Scotland who we thank for his time and expertise. After much time and deliberation, he awarded the championship rosette to the first prize Limousin bullock consigned by Messrs Hodgson, High Borrans. This eight-month-old Limousin bullock flew away selling at £1100 to the judge. The reserve champion in the pre-sale show was awarded to the first prize Limousin heifer from CD Slinger & JL Eaton, Middleton. This lovely lady attracted keen interest and achieved a final bid of £1200 and going on for breeding. We would like to take this opportunity to thank our presale sponsor APSV - trucks, plant and spiciest vehicle sales. The suckler calf sale was met with a full ring side of buyers with 56 accounts purchasing, who were all keen to purchase with many on lookers calling the trade more fierce than the first sale.

Out side the show quality calves were once again keenly bid for with British Blue bullocks selling to £1220 from M&D Hatton, Broughton in Furness. Four bullocks achieved the £1100 mark, firstly a British Blue from TW Gorst, then a Charollais from WA Atkinson and Limousin bullocks from both GE&JA Hayhurst and Messrs Hodgson. Well grown smart suckler bullocks regularly sold at the £950-£1000 mark.

The best heifers would be the trade of the day, with numerous buyers round the ring keen to secure stock suitable for future breeding and the show ring. Topping the heifer trade today was T Ayrton & Son with a smart Limousin heifer which went on to sell for £1160. A generally younger show of heifers were forward, being 5-7 month old with the best selling at £880-£950. With the medium sorts £720-£800. The best butcher heifers sold well over the thousand pound mark.

STORE CATTLE Todays’ sale concluded with 110 store cattle which continue to sell at the recent high rates. Steers sold to a top price of £1360 from J Hayton & Sons, Millom who sold Hereford x at £1300 and Aberdeen Angus x at £1270.

Other Aberdeen Angus’s sold to £1230 from R Greaves, Barrow in Furness and £1220 from RJ Walling, Windermere. Dairy bred steers sold to £1125 for Holstein Friesians with others selling at £1040. Younger store steers (15-18 months) generally sold at £950 - £1020, with younger sorts showing the effects of the recent weather change selling at £780-£850.

Store heifers sold to £1270 for a Limousin x from TW Nelson & Son, Stainton with Beef Shorthorns selling to £1240 from J&E Lancaster, Ulverston. Younger store heifers sold to £1150 for a Limousin x from H Morgan, Stalmine. With others at £1100 from J Kitching & Son, Grange over Sands. Aberdeen Angus heifers sold to £1050 from S&M Cooper, Leece, with others at £1020 from JE Hadwin, Mansergh. Other store heifers generally sold at £880-£950, today buyers were keen to secure cattle suitable for immediate further finishing.

OTM CATTLE Another strong entry saw 54 forward selling to a strong trade with all cows averaging 126p/kg, with over half the entry being dairy bred cows. The keenest demand was shown for heavy weight well fleshed cows selling to 209.5p/kg for an Aberdeen Angus x from MJ & JD Handley, Sedbergh, with a British Blue x from MA&JA Winn, Burneside selling at 164.5p/kg. Dairy cows sold to 129.5p/kg for a Shorthorn from Messrs Robinson, Old Hutton.

Holstein Friesian sold to 147.5p/kg from S&M Cooper, Leece. Medium flesh cows suitable for further finishing generally selling at 130p/kg – 145p/kg depending on breeding and type with the leanest cows seeing a rise in trade and regularly achieving 98-110p/kg. Top grossing cow today achieved £1384 for an Aberdeen Angus x from MJ&JD Handley, Sedbergh with dairy cows selling to £1037 for a Holstein Friesian from JA Barton & Sons, Lupton.

Cull bulls sold to a top price of 129.5p/kg for a Charollais from F&TE Park, Crook. OTM Heifers sold to 179.5p/kg and £1102 for an Aberdeen Angus x from MJ&JD Handley, Sedbergh. With dairy heifers to 159.5p/kg and £834 from JM Barton & Son, Lupton. OTM steers sold to 201.5p/kg for an Aberdeen Angus x and a British Blue x from JW Robinson & Son, Farlton who sold other at £1209.

J36 Rural Auction Centre: North West Suffolk Breeders Club Show & Sale of In-Lamb Ewes & Empty Gimmer Lambs. To also include multi-bred Females Thursday 11th November 2021 North West Auction were proud to host the annual North West Suffolk breeders club show and sale of individual Suffolk females which also included multi breed individual females. A special mention goes to our judge Mr David Williams who we thank for his time and expertise. The pre-sale championship rosette was awarded to lot number 55 a much admired Sullom gimmer lamb from G&K Richmond, that was sired by Sullom Corncrake which went on to sell for 700gns. The reserve champion rosette was awarded to lot 20, an in lamb gimmer shearling from the Raikes flock scanned carrying twins, sire by Benrafton Borris that was consigned by M A Tett, she went on to sell for 800gns. Taking top spot at 1000gns was the first prize in lamb ewe from RA Batty, Selside selling a Sitlow ewe sired by the Strathbogie Peaky Blinder carrying twins. Topping the gimmer lamb section was G&K Richmond of the Sullom flock selling to 780gns with a Pyeston Bumper sired lamb, other noted prices for gimmer lambs was 650gns from TA Blair, Thornton Cleveleys with this stylish gimmer lamb sired by Mullaghboy Moather. The flock dispersal from MA & KD Tett of the Raikes flock sold in lamb ewes to 750gns and gimmer shearlings to 650gns.

The annual consignment from Richard Batty sold to 700gns, 650gns twice and 600gns. The consignment from AR Gardner from the Powerline flock peaked at 650gns.

The sale also included individual Charollais females with the consignment from RJ&J Towers, Ingleton leading the way selling to £550 three times, £500 and £450.

Lancaster Auction Mart: Weekly Sale of Calves, Store and OTM Cattle - Friday 12th November 2021 CALVES & WEANLINGS Lancaster had a large entry of calves last Friday but saw even more forward this week. Good quality calves in Lancaster book the trends and continue to sell to the heights of the summer trade, with smaller and younger calves less money than the flying summer trade but as good as the trade seen anywhere in the area.

Leading the way today was an Aberdeen Angus bull calf from T&CM Kelsall & Sons, Chipping selling to £445, with other Aberdeen Angus bull calves from the same home selling to £350. Eight - nine week old British Blue bulls sold to £430, £425 and £395 twice from JP&C Robson, Catterall. Also breaking the £400 barrier was a five week old British Blue bull from AD&R Milner, Claughton on Brock selling to £430. Charolais bull calves peaked at £425, from TM Townley, Over Wyresdale. A run of Hereford weanling bulls from TE&M Kidd, Ellel sold to £425, £390 twice and £385. Some cracking three month old British Blue heifers sold to £360 twice from J&G Thornley, Kirkham. OTM CATTLE The cast cow capital of the North keeps charging on with a bumper entry of 149 forward, the trade this week was very similar to previous weeks except for leaner cows which were a slightly easier trade. Clean heifers led the way selling to 249.5p/kg or £1621 from Mason & Gardner, Ingleton. This was closely followed by Limousin heifers selling to 234.5p/kg or £1315 from R&EA Gardner, Brigsteer. Over thirty month old heifers saw Simmentals sell to 209.5p/kg or £1152 from BW&LM Kirkby, Wennington. Dairy heifers sold to 191.5p/kg or £1254 from JK&B Birkett & Son, Morecambe.
