Weekly Report and Newsletter - 10th December Lancaster Auction Mart: Lancaster Christmas Show & Sale of Prime Lambs and Cast Sheep, 6th December 2021 Prime Lambs The Foy Family with be ‘Rockin’ around the Christmas Tree’ as they take home the Christmas Championship for the seventh year in a row.

A wonderful day at Lancaster, full of the festive sprit for our annual Christmas show and sale of Prime lambs. The auction decorated in all its Christmas glory, accompanied by 41 show pens of lambs for our judge loyal North West Auctions buyer Mr Abdou Farag, who we thank for his time and expertise. He awarded the Championship trophy, the John Edward Kellet Memorial cup, to GR&A Foy, Conder Green winning the trophy for the seventh year in a row. This much admired pen of five Dutch Texel sired lambs weighing 42kg went on to sell for £260 or 620p/kg purchased by our judge. The reserve championship rosette was awarded to the first prize pen of Cheviot lambs weighing 45kg and selling for £138 from TR Prickett, Hutton Roof. The first prize pair of Beltex lambs was awarded to Andrew Butler, Hambleton selling 48kg lambs to £185 or 411p/kg. The first prize pen of Mule or Masham lambs was awarded to a pen of five 47kg Mashams selling to £135 from S&J France, Over Wyresdale. Taking the Horned lamb class and winning the John Dickinson memorial cup was Gus Brown, Littledale with his 42kg Lonk lambs selling to £120. A big Thank you to all our vendors for taking part and a special mention to Grace Dobson of Laurence Pierce Wool Merchant for kindly sponsoring todays show.

Lancaster had an entry of 1041 prime lambs forward selling to an overall market average of 282p/kg or £126.88 per head, to include a large number of Hill bred lambs. Outside of the show lambs the trade peaked at £170 for heavy weight Texels from Gus Brown, Littledale, with plenty more pens of heavy weight lambs regularly selling into the late £140 and £150’s. Handy weighted lambs were in strong demand today with 39-45kg lambs averaging 286p/kg. Plenty of pens of better bred handy weighted lambs regularly sold in excess of 300p/kg. Mule lambs sold to a top of £138 and £137.50 from WI&A Atkinson & Son, Bleasedale with Mule lambs over 45kg averaging over £130 per head.

Store Lamb Just a handfuls of store lambs today, which sold to £74 from A Dickinson, Ellel.

Cast Sheep It was great to have more cast ewes forward as the trade continues to go from strength to strength, Texel ewes led the way selling to £164 from Hannah McDonagh, Heaton with Oxcliffe. This was followed by pure Suffolk ewes selling to £147 from Andrea Gardner, Bay Horse. Mule ewes this week peaked at £122 from Wannops Farms, Heaton with Oxcliffe with two further pens from the same home selling to £109. Well fleshed Mule ewes regularly sold in excess of the £100 mark. Texel tups peaked at £148 from B&SE Carter, Ellel, with Suffolks to £122 from Ivan Slater, Claughton on Brock. Hill bred tups saw Cheviots sell to £123 from HE&M Henderson, Dent and Swaledale tups to £86. Hill ewes sold to £80 for Lonks from A Brown, Littledale who sold Swaledales to the same price and Herdwicks to £70.

J36 Rural Auction Centre: J36 December Online Machinery North West Auctions held its final collective machinery sale of the year on Monday 6th December which again saw over 1000 lots offered for sale, which included 26 vehicles, 42 trailers and over 150 lots of livestock equipment.

The sale saw tractors sell to £10,700 for a Sam 100.6 4WD direct from a local farm and finding a new home in Ireland. A ford 3600 (ex scarper) sold at £1950.

Other vehicles of interest included Land Rover 90 (2011) from an ex local farm selling at £9400, Polaris Ranger £6800, Bamford 3T dumper £2700, Suzuki Vitara £1750 and Land Rover Freelander at £1200.

A special mention must go to Mr T Carr, Brookhouse, Lancaster who kindly donated his AUSA task 4x4 vehicle with all proceeds going to charity which saw a final bid of £3000.

Trailers sold to £3200 for a twin axel dual purpose bale/tipping trailer with a 22ft livestock trailer £2300, Hudson 12ft livestock trailer £1850, small plant trailer £1600, 3T plant trailer £1600, small car trailer £550 and single axel tipping trailer £480.

Other items of interest included a JF Still trailed chopper at £4000, Abbey 2050 spreader £3800, Towable compressor £1650, Foster digger £1500, mounted chain harrows £920.

Seasonal livestock equipment attracted keen interest with 10ft sheep hurdles selling at £100 each, cattle crush £460, foot trimming crush £420, 8ft sheep hurdles £24 each, calving gate £320, lamb feeder £320, cow cubicles £22 each.

Well mounted items continue to sell to a premium regardless of the season with this sale seeing toppers, tedders, mowers and rollers all selling at strong prices.

This year has seen North West Auctions, sell over 14,000 lots of machinery at its popular monthly collective sale, with successful purchasing from throughout the United Kingdom, Ireland alongside several European customers.

North West Auctions will continue to host the monthly collective sale based at the NWA J36 Auction Centre, alongside offering specialist collective sales and farm dispersal sales throughout the year.

The next sale is scheduled to commence on Friday 7th January 2022 with delivery of the items strictly on Tuesday 4th and Wednesday 5th January, please note there will be no inside small tools/items section this month.

J36 Rural Auction Centre: J36 'Butchers Bonanza' Christmas Show and Sale of Prime Pigs, Cattle, Lambs and Cast Sheep, 7th December 2021 Prime, Store & Weaner Pigs The Christmas Prize Show and Sale of Prime Pigs at North West Auctions Junction 36 saw and entry of both quality and quantity forward with 18 pairs forward in the two show classes, with the judging expertly undertaken this year by loyal sale attendee Mr John Twigge, Lindale who we thank for his time.

The championship rosette for 2021 was awarded to the first prize winning pair if heavy pigs which were presented

by C Dean & LJ Brennand, Clapham. This pair of Pietrain x hogs later sold after a furry of bids (much like the short snow shower outside) for a star sparking price of £185 purchased by Mr Stephen Taylor, Bamber Bridge.

The reserve rosette was won by the first prize pair of light weight pigs being Duroc x gilts from JM Navesey, Darwen.

All vendors must be complimented on the quality of the pigs presented not only at todays show and sale but throughout the year which has seen this popular sale continue to attract new customers from throughout the northern counties and further afield.

The sale today saw well finished pigs continue to sell to a premium with buyers keen to secure pigs to fulfil Christmas orders of hams, sausages and pigs in blankets. Following the champions which sold at £185, the next top price was £148 achieved by E Spedding & Son, Egremont and £130 from E Brannen, Penrith. Other heavy weighted pigs generally sold between £100 and £120, with lighter weights £85 - £100.

The top p/kg today was also achieved by the sale champions being 168p/kg. Others nicely selling at 115p/kg – 140p/kg and a special mention must go to a marvellous pen of Saddleback x Duroc hogs from JM Navesey being 75kg and achieving 160p/kg and £120.

Another large entry of young stores and weaners once again saw quality presented throughout with an eye catching pen of pure Pietrain weaners from D Thackery sell to £52, with other at £40 for a pen of modern Hydrid White gilts and boars from J Critchley.

Prime Cattle The prime cattle show was judged by Mr Chris Bell, Appleby, a well-known and renowned Beef & Sheep farmer who we thank him very much for his time.

A Small but wonderful show of 15 prime cattle were forward, all eyes were in awe of the quality put before are judge and all vendors leaving the ring smiling with joy after their trade.

The Championship was awarded to Lot 14 a Limousin heifer shown by Alister Thompson, Selside weighing 585kg which went on to make 450p/kg and grossing at £2630 purchased by Chris Bell on behalf of Kitson Butchers.

Reserve honours was awarded to lot 2 a Limousin heifer shown by JA Barnett, Shap which went on to sell for 349.5p/kg weighing 600kg and grossing £2097. Other noted prices for the consignment from JA Barnett was lot 1 a Limousin heifer weighing 540kg which went on to sell for 400p/kg and grossing at £2158, purchased by Browns Quality Meats, Ulverston. The run of well finished and turned out heifers from JA Barnett, Shap sold to an impressive average of £2078.

Light weight heifers were a dream to sell today with most selling over the 300p/kg mark.

Prime Lambs A bouncing ‘Butchers Bonaza’ for the largest show of Christmas Prime lambs seen for some time at J36. There was an impressive entry of 55 show pens forward for our judge Chris Bell to cast his eye over. Taking the 2021 Christmas Show Championship was Linda Beck, Endmoor with her impressive pen of five lowland sired lambs by the Texel. This much-admired pen of lambs weighing 52kg went onto sell for £280 or 538p/kg purchased by James Blenkhorn on behalf of Yorkshire Halal. The reserve champion rosette was awarded to the first prize pair of Beltex lambs from Richard Batty, Selside weighed 48kg selling at £160. In class three, pen of five Mule/Masham lambs, the first prized rosette was awarded to AW & AM Clarke, Windermere selling 50kg Mule lambs to £136. The Horned and Herdwick class was won by TA & JA Dixon, Selside selling 46kg Swaledale lambs to £120. The Cheviot class was won by AR & BJ Thompson, Selside selling 47kg lambs to £136. The Rough Fell class kindly sponsored by the Rough Fell Sheep Breeders association had an increased entry of seven pens forward with the first-place rosette awarded to AJ & CM Harrison, Kentmere 42kg selling to £110.

An increased entry of 1761 prime lambs were forward and sold to an overall market average of 281p/kg and SQQ of 284p/kg. The busy ring of twelve buyers forward today ensures all lambs forward where well bid for with heavy weight lambs at J36 continuing to bring a premium. Heavy weight Texel lambs sold to £173 weighing 63kg from F &SA Edmondson, Ulverston. Heavy Suffolk lambs sold to £163 from John Twigge, Lindale followed by others to £159 from F &SA Edmondson, Ulverston and £158.50 from G Riley, Bolton Le Sands. Heavy weight Masham lambs sold to £157.50 from JE Read, Hutton Roof followed by Mules to £153 from F &SA Edmondson, Ulverston.

Plenty of pens of better bred Continental handy weighted lambs sold in excess of the 300p/kg market. Light weight lambs continue to be a strong trade for the Christmas export trade with there a strong trade for these in the liveweight ring at J36.

Cast Sheep There were less ewes forward today, with all types continuing to sell to a fast trade at J36, with heavy ewes being dearer on the week. Texel ewes sold to a top of £172 from H Geldard, Foulshaw with the best pure bred ewes selling between the £160-£170 mark. Texels out of Mules sold to a top of £158 from AW Crowe. Charollais’s sold to £152 from JA & R Geldard & Son, Levens with many of the heavy ewes continuing to selling between the £115£125 mark. Mule ewes sold to a strong trade with many selling over the £110 mark, topping at £115 from F & SA Edmondson. Medium type Mules were selling between the £90-£100 mark. Mashams sold to a top of £118 from WI & AM Atkinson & Son. Hill ewes sold to another sharp trade with Gritstones selling to £116 from S Crawford, Staveley. Dalesbred ewes sold to £84 twice, firstly from R Capstick & Son and then from WI & AM Atkinson & Son, whom also sold a full pen of Swaledale ewes to £72.

J36 Rural Auction Centre: Show & Sale of Rearing Calves and Dairy Cattle, Sale of Stirks, Store, Beef Breeding and OTM Cattle, 9th December 2021 Calves & Weanlings The Christmas Show of calves was in the hands of judge, Mr John Allonby, Grayrigg. All show classes were full with a top show on offer. For the second year running, A Pickthall, New Hutton took the top spot with his British Blue bull at 1 month old, selling for an impressive £475. Reserve Champion went to the first prize heifer, a British Blue from JW & TE Sharp, Lyth making £445.

Outside the show calves, all sold to a sharper trade with a full ringside of buyers forward looking for all types of calves.

British Blue bulls averaged £350 for all sold with many of the best selling over the £400 mark. A wonderful run from JW & TE Sharpe, Lyth sold to a top of £435 with others to £420. HJ Robinson & Son, Crooklands sold their best British Blue bull calf to £435.

The heifer trade saw the most lift with British Blue heifers selling to £445 from JW & TE Sharp and Limousin heifers to £410 from CM & CS Chapplehow, Penrith.

The next sale of calves is Thursday 16th December. This is the last sale before Christmas.

Dairy Cattle - CHRISTMAS DAIRY CHAMPION SELLS AT £2150 AT NWA J36

North West Auctions held it Christmas prize Show & Sale of Dairy Cattle on Thursday 9th December which was a

wonderful entry of cattle forward, which were greeted by a ringside of keen purchasers keen to secure additional and replacement stock. The show this year was judged by Mr Joe Sutcliffe, Cockerham who had a great sample of cattle presented before him in the four show classes.

The championship rosette was awarded to a pedigree heifer shown by W Garnett & Son, Milnthorpe, who has now won the Christmas Dairy show at NWA J36 for three consecutive years. This Heifer attracted much ringside interest being 2 weeks calved and giving 26lts and after a flurry of bids she was secured by the judge for £2150.

The reserve rosette was awarded to pedigree heifer from PD & BS Lawrence which was 4 weeks calved and giving 28lts achieving a final bid of £2100. The first prize cow from W Garnett & Son was fresh into her 3rd Lactation giving 40lts and was again secured by the judge for £2050. The first prize Friesian heifer was shown by RF & CE Hodgson, Pennington being 4 weeks calved and giving 35lts she achieved a final bid of £2000.

Steers sold to £1210 for Limousin x’s from S & M Geldart, with British Blues at £1140 from R & J Dodgson, aswell as Hereford x from A Riley Ltd. Younger steers sold to £1025 for Limousins from T W Nelson & Son with a run of 8month old Simmentals x Luing steers from Low Moor Howe Ltd selling to £945.

Heifers sold to £1050 for Limousins from S & M Geldart with Hereford x to £1015 from JE Wightman and Limousin x’s to £1010 MW & M Hodgson. Younger heifers sold to £900 for British Shorthorns from J Black & Son with 6 month old Limousins to £770 from JR Corlett.

OTM / Cast Cattle A large entry of cull cows for the final sale of 2021 saw another strong trade for all classes and types. The sale peaked at 194p/kg for a Limousin x from RG & l Holmes, Lyth with other heavy and well fleshed beef cows selling to 179p/kg from BJ Bowness, Kendal and GH Jones, Windermere who both sold Limousin x cows. Other beef cows generally 135p/kg – 150p/kg depending on breed and quality. Dairy cows sold to 174p/kg for a Holstein Friesian from Strickland Hill Farming, Witherslack with other heavy dairy cows 125p/kg – 140p/kg, mediums 110p/kg – 122p/kg with the leanest parlour types either side of 100p/kg.

Top grossing beef cow was a Limousin x from GH Jones, Windermere selling at £1306 with dairy cows selling to £1263 from Strickland Hill Farming, Witherslack.

Several OTM heifers forward selling to a top price of 161p/kg & £1027 for a Limousin x from PW Clarke, Crosthwaite.

A single cull bull from Messers Ellwood sold at 119p/kg and £977.

Lancaster Auction Mart: Sale of Calves, OTM and Store Cattle - Friday 10th December 2021 Calves & Weanlings On the tenth day of Christmas Raymond & Paul gave the first prize rosette to the Drinkall Family.

A whopping entry of 175 calves were forward for the annual Christmas show which brough buyers from far and wide, looking for a Christmas star calf. The judging was in the capable hands of loyal Lancaster customers Raymond and Paul Ayrton, Over Wyresdale who we thank for their time and expertise. They awarded the Championship rosette to Messrs Drinkall, Over Wyresdale with a much-admired Charolais bull calf at one month and twenty three days old which topped at £570 and was purchased by the judges. The reserve championship rosette was awarded to a Charolais bull calf at one month and one day old from RT Halhead, Cockerham sold to £500, also purchased by the judges. The first prize Continental heifer was awarded to a British Blue from JP&C Robson, Garstang selling to £350. The dairy bull calf class was won by JK&BJ Birkett & Son, Morecambe selling Fleckvieh bull claves to £290. The native bull calf class was won by AD&RL Milner, Claughton on Brock who sold Aberdeen Angus bull calves to £365, with the first prize native heifer being a Aberdeen Angus from JK&BJ Birkett & Son selling to £200. A buoyant trade throughout the sale saw best quality calves regularly selling in excess of the £400 mark, with the medium and younger type calves an improved trade. Next weeks is the concluding sale of 2021 which will include the monthly sale of stirks.

Store Cattle - A record breaking Christmas Cracker, as cattle sell to £1960.

Lancaster’s annual Christmas show and sale of store cattle once again saw a good entry forward selling to a continued strong trade. The Tom Owen memorial trophy for the best pair of steers was awarded to DE&SM Moorhouse, Natland. This much-admired pair of Limousin bullocks purchased from N Cooper & Son, Broughton in Furness from the J36 renowned annual Grass Day Sale in April 2021, went on to sell for £1960 purchased by Rod Owen. The second prize pair were consigned by R&A Easterby, Westhouse, a set of twin Limousins selling to £1560, with the third prize rosette awarded to a pair of home bred Aberdeen Angus’s selling to £1600 from Pilling Hall, Pilling. The first prize pair of heifers was awarded to M Shepherd & Son, Pilling with a pair of British Blues achieving £1400. OTM Cattle The Christmas show and sale of cast cattle had an entry of 106 forward, with a plainer show of dairy cows on the market selling to an overall market average of 125p/kg. Winning the highest priced beef cow per kilo was a Limousin from JM&JJ Dawson, Littledale selling to 194.5p/kg or £1361. The highest priced OTM Black and White cow was awarded to EE Thornton & Son, Heaton selling to 164.5p/kg. The highest price in the cast ring today was awarded to the Hereford bull from Messrs Drinkall, Over Wyresdale selling to £1404.

Beef cows peaked at £1378 for a Limousin from JG&PH Thompson, Selside. Dairy cows sold to a top of £1212 for a OTM heifer from GA&A Atkinson, Cantsfield. With cows peaking at £1118 from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale.
