Weekly Report and Newsletter - 1st April 2022 Lancaster Auction Mart: Weekly Sale of Spring Lambs, Prime Hoggs, Cast Sheep and Sheep with Lambs at Foot, 28th March 2022 Spring Lambs Today saw the first entry of spring lambs of the season forward which were consigned by S Wilson & Son, Scotforth the trade peaked at £144 for 48kg Texels with a top pence for kilo of 310p for 44kg lambs. Dorsets sold to £130 or 302p/kg with in speciation spring lambs averaged 305p/kg.

Prime Hoggs There was a sharper trade for all specification of prime hoggs today, with once again handy weighted hoggs best to sell and averaging 260p/kg. Better confirmation prime hoggs easily sold in excess of the 300p/kg mark. It was a consignment of heavy weigh hoggs from GH Sanderson & Family, Catforth that led the way selling to £155, £152 and £149, averaging just shy of the £150 mark. Matching the top price today of £150 was heavy weight Texel hoggs from JM&MH France & Son, Littledale. Texel hoggs from F&SG Sanderson & Son, Woodplumpton peaked at £140. Heavy weight Suffolks sold to a top of £135 from AG Butler, Hambleton with plenty of heavy weight hoggs regularly selling around the £130 mark. Beltex hoggs twice peaked at £140 from AG Butler, followed by others to £138 and £135 from Kevin Purtill, Wigan.

Top pence per kilo today was 330p from AG Butler, with the run from Kevin Purtill to 325p, 321p, and 317p.

Upland hoggs saw heavy weight Mules sell to £125.50 from F&SG Sanderson & Son with Cheviots peaking at £118 from SH&LE Birkett, Nether Kellet. Plenty of pens of Mules and Mashams regularly sold in the hundreds and teens. Horned hoggs saw 46kg Swaledales sell to £108 from T Longton & Son, Quernmore with 43kg to £101.50.

The heat remains on for cast sheep with all forward this week averaging an impressive £118.65. Texel ewes from S Rossall, Over Wyresdale led the way selling to £207, with Charollais x ewes from the same home to £166. At £187 was a Texel x ewe from E Lund & Son, Ingleton this was followed by others to £164 from JM&MH France & Son, Littledale. Leicester ewes peaked at £159 from M&L Preece, Kirkby Lonsdale. Masham ewes sold to £144 and £140 from DC Miller, Claughton on Brock. Other Masham ewes sold to £140 from S&J France, Over Wyresdale.

Mule ewes peaked at £139 from B&J Preston, Caton with others to £138 from DJ Casson & Son, Slyne followed by £136 from M&J Preece, Kirkby Lonsdale and £134 from JET & AAE Hull, Winmarleigh. Upland ewes saw Cheviots sell to £130 from S Wilson & Son, Scotforth. The Horned ewe trade peaked at £124 from S&J France, Over Wyresdale with Swaledale ewes to £115 from DC Miller, Claughton on Brock.

J36 Rural Auction Centre: Weekly Sale of Prime Hoggs, Cast Sheep and Sheep with Lambs at Foot, Tuesday 29th March 2022 Spring Lambs A small entry of spring lambs forward today saw handy weighted lambs eagerly bid for and average in excess of the 300p/kg mark. The consignment from Mason and Brown, Clapham lead the way selling 40kg Texel lambs to £122 with continentals selling to £120. Heavy weight Suffolk lambs sold to hoggs price with heavy Suffolk’s selling to £120 from Helen Newton, Low Levens.

Prime Hoggs The weekly sale of Prime Hoggs saw the full variety forward with good types of hoggs selling in to a stronger trade then previous weeks in which are required each week. Heavy weights an improved trade and lead the way in J36 today. Heavy weight Texel hoggs the way from Richard Wilson, Appleby selling to £160 and £150. Other heavy weights sold to £158 from GG & MA Long, Pennington for Texel’s with Cheviots to £146 with Leicester’s from the same home selling to the same price. Other leading prices saw Texel’s to £146 from VE & J Chadwick and Son, Sowerby followed by £142 from GM & A Jackson, Little Eccleston. Heavy suffolks sold to £144 from TW Nelson & Son, Stainton. Plenty more pens of hoggs sold in the one hundred and thirties. Mule hoggs peaked at £136 for heavies from Edmondson Bros, Great Langdale.

A large number of hill bred hoggs in the market today saw the trade for horned hoggs peak at £117 from £117 from EW & JR Parkinson, Dunsop Bridge and AW & AM Clarke, Windermere.

Cast Sheep Trade goes from strength to strength in the cast ewe ring with Texel ewes leading the way selling to £197 from WS Burrow & Sons, Silverdale with others to £189 M&S Blease, Carnforth. The best Texel ewes were regularly selling to £180plus mark with the next level down £150 plus. Leicester ewes sold to £184 from Calderside Farm, Garstang with other leicester ewes to £178 from TA Ladds, Kendal. Heavy Teeswater ewes from DE&J Waine, Longsleddle sold to £169 with others from the same home selling to £140. Suffolk ewes sold to a top of £168 from H Newton, Levens. Hampshire’s selling to £167 from J&O Galbraith, Endmoor. Mule ewes saw another lifting trade with the best selling £140 plus topping at £146 from JD, EM, JA Atkinson, Skelsmergh with others to £145 from M Salton, Kendal. 120 mules forward averaged £110. All hill ewes saw an impressive trade with Cheviot selling to £128 from G Nelson, Brigsteer with a full pen of Rough Fells selling to £123 from E Clark, Appleby.

Swaledale’s topped at £111 from R&E Ladds, Kendal with the best regularly selling well over the £100 mark with the next level down selling £80-£85.

Another big entry of cast rams forward at J36 with all selling to a full value, topping at £208 for a Leicester tup from GG&MA Long, Ulverston with Cheviots selling to £172 from Strickland Hill. Buyers are requesting all types of cast ewes and rams for the up coming weeks.

Young Texel sheep with young Texel lambs sold to £270 from NJ Strickland & Son, Whinfell. Mule shearlings with young Charollais lambs sold to £218 from Oston and Mason, Bolton le Sands.

J36 Rural Auction Centre: Sale of Calves, Stirks, OTM's and Store Cattle, Thursday 31st March 2022 Calves & Stirks The calf trade saw a rise up on previous weeks with many more buyers forward looking to purchase all types of calves, with the best quality calves meeting high demand. Blue bulls sold toa top of £430 from HJ Robinson & Son, Preston Patrick with other blue bulls selling to £410 twice from JW&TE Sharp, Lyth and B Mallinson & Son, Levens. 15 blue bulls averaging an impressive £350. More interest in native bull calves today with Angus’s selling to a top of £400 from AK&BM Robinson & Son, Arkholme. Heifer calves saw a top of £405 for a blue from RW&SA Nicholson, Lupton, with Limousin Heifers selling to £350 from CI Briggs, High Wray. With continental heifers regularly selling to £250-£300. Dairy bred bulls saw a top of £300 for a Fleckvieh from RW&SA Nicholson, Lupton with others selling to £205 from JS&IM Wilson, Whitbeck who sold Montbeliard’s to £190.

Black & Whites saw a top of £155 twice from AK&BM Robinson & Son, Arkholme with others selling to £120 from RG&JA Clark, Endmoor.

A good entry of 70 Stirks forward today with well reared and grown selling to a massive premium with buyers showing caution over smaller stirks especially native heifers. Limousin bulls lead the way selling to £1110 from Sam Whitehead, Middleton who sold others to £1055, with other Limousin bulls selling to £965 from NJ Strickland & Sons, Whinfell. Limousin Bullocks saw a top of £970 from SW Atkinson & Son, Crook who sold others to £950. Suckler bred bullocks 6–10-month-old were regularly selling £800-£900 mark. Limousin Heifers sold to a top of £815 from M Forbes, Grahamsfield with 6-month-old Limousin heifer selling to a top of £700 from JM Bewerly, Dent. Buyers are keen to purchase all types of stirks in the up coming months with turn out time jus around the corner.

Store Cattle 300 store cattle sold under the hammer at J36, with the best end selling to another strong trade. Hereford bullocks sold to a top of £1285 from JL Bird with others from the same home selling to £1205. Yearling bullocks were the trade of the day, Limousins peaked at £1270 from A&P Hodkinson, British Blues sold to £1140 from MJ Whitworth and Parthenaise sold to £1130 from MA Barnes. Many of the best end 10-12 month old bullocks were selling between £1100-£1270 with good quality grazing types £920-£1050. A run of 6-8 month old Montbeliarde bullocks from Low Burrowbridge Farm topped at £790 for a pen of four with others full pens selling to £780.

All Heifers sold to their full value, Limousins lead the way selling to £1250 from MJ Waller with others from the same good home to £1180. Native heifers were well bid for with Herefords selling to £1200 from JL Bird and Aberdeen Angus's to £1180 from AE&PC Capstick. The best end heifers were in short supply. A wonderful run of Blondes from MJ Whitworth sold to £1100. JR Corlett sold his best 8 month old Charolais heifers to £1030 with the same price achieved for British Blue heifers from A Winder & Son. Best end yearling grazing heifers were £920-£1000 with the next level down £800-£880.

OTM Cattle OTM & cast cattle continue to sell to a fast trade at Junction 36. There were 68 cattle forward selling to a market average of £1104 a head or 176.85 pence per kilogram.

Top grossing cow was a Limousin achieving £1579 from Jack Turnball, Meathop. Thor Atkinson, Ulverston consignment of cast Limousin and Blonde cows sold to a top of 229.5p/kg with others to 214.5p/kg and 211.5p/kg. Aberdeen Angus cows achieved 224.5p/kg from J Scott & Co, Cark in

Cartmel. Limousin heifers achieved 234.5p/kg from A P & R L Crowe, Rusland. In the dairy department Black and Whites cows sold to a top of 184.5p/kg from Messrs Sowerby, Drybeck, whom sold others to 181.5p/kg. Also, achieving this price was JW Hargreaves, Woodland. Dairy heifer sold to 209.5p/kg from R&A Galbraith, Crooklands. A smaller entry of cast steers forward saw Limousin sell to 244.5p/kg from R Keith, Brigsteer.

Lancaster Auction Mart: Sale of Calves, Stirks, OTM's and Store Cattle, Friday 1st April 2022 Calves & Weanlings Quality continues to demand a premium in the ring at Lancaster again today with plenty of quality 6 to 8 week old calves selling in the region of four hundred pounds. A smart run of British Blue calves from AD & R Milner, Claughton on Brock lead the way selling bulls to £450 and heifers to £400. British Blue bull at six weeks old from RT Halhead, Cockerham sold to £400. The consignment of British Blue heifers from AJ & AJ Gibbons, St Michaels sold to £385, £380 and £360 twice. The consignment of British Blues from T & CM Kelsall, & Sons, Chipping sold bulls to £380 and heifers £370. Leading the way in Limousin section was returning customers Antony and Lindsay Gardner, Quernmore selling bulls to £365. A run of 10 week old Angus heifers from T & CM Kelsall, & Sons, Chipping where eagerly bid for selling to £305 and £275 twice. Young beef calves continue to be sticky. A special entry Holstein heifers at eight weeks old from AJ & AJ Gibbons, St Michaels met plenty of demand selling to £300. A young entry of black and white calves peaked at £105 from J & G Thornley, Kirkham.

Store Cattle A larger number of over 200 store cattle were forward today in Lancaster which saw short keep store cattle a stronger trade, with many dead weight outlines reporting a lift in the prime cattle prices in the currently weeks. L Parsons & Sons, Levens once again led the way selling a pen of three Aberdeen Angus bullocks to £1640. Next call was a pen of four British Blues to £1600 from J Prest &Son, Bay Horse whom sold a pen of diary bullocks consisting of Norwegian Reds and Fleckviehs to £1540. The consignment from M S Dugdale & Sons, Tewitfield sold Limousin and Aberdeen Angus bullocks to £1560 and £1550. Charollais bullocks peaked at £1500 from MJ Waller, Lupton. A large number of short keep bullocks today sold between £1400 and £1500.

The heifer trade peaked at £1500 from GF&EE Holt, Chipping, with Limousin and Aberdeen Angus heifers to £1400 from L Parsons, & Sons, Levens. Plenty of short keep heifers today sold between the £1300 and £1400 mark. As turn out day creeps ever closer, plenty of strong grazing type cattle sold between £1100 and £1250.

Friesian bullocks were a sharper trade today, peaking at £1420 from J Prest & Son, Bay Horse with plenty of good Friesian bullocks regularly selling around the £1200 mark.

OTM Cattle This cast cow trade keeps getting better and better, with a remark about overall market average today of 181p/kg for the 115 forward. All Black and White dairy cows averaged an impressive 177p/kg. The overall market average per head was a staggering £1135.

Young Montbeliarde cows sold to 239.5p/kg or £1700 from WR&CM Lawrenson, Winmarleigh. Plenty of young cattle sold between 205-225p/kg today. The best dairy cows sold in the region of 200p/kg with top price in the OTM ring being £1740 for a five year old Holstein Friesian from JS&KM Wilson & Son, Kendal followed by another 5 year old cow to £1711 from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale. There was a large number of dairy cows today selling between £1400 and £1600.
