Back in October NWA were honoured to sell ‘Greenholme Popeye’ a Fell Pony colt, generously donated on behalf of Greenholme Stud with the proceeds to Prostate Cancer UK. Raising £840 and was kindly purchased by Claire Burns, Kendal.

Lancaster Auction Mart: Sale of Prime Lambs and Cast Sheep - Monday 29th November 2021 Prime Lambs SNOW PROBLEM WITH THE LANCASTER LAMB TRADE Today saw less numbers forward due to the adverse weather conditions but those who braved the elements were rewarded with the hottest trade seen so far this season, with an overall market average of 275p/kg or £121 per head.

Top spot this week was £162 for 57kg Beltex lambs from our very own Andrew Butler, Hambleton with lambs purchased from the J36 store ring, showing good returns in finishing lambs. Beltex lambs also topped the pence per kilo selling to 340p/kg or £132 from Kevin Purtill, Wigan. Plenty more pens of better confirmation Beltex and Texel lambs regularly selling in excess of 300p/kg. Heavy weight Texel lambs peaked at £159 from S&J France, Over Wyresdale, followed by other Texel lambs to £148.50 and £148 from P Lawrenson & Son, Chorley. Other noted prices for Texel lambs were £147 from TR Prickett, Hutton Roof and £144.50 from JR Bargh & Son, Heaton with Oxcliffe, with plenty more pens regularly selling round the £140 mark. Suffolk lambs peaked at £140 for 50kg from Andrew Butler, Hambleton. Mule lambs this week peaked at £130.50 for a pen of 49kg Mules from WI&A Atkinson & Son, Bleasdale, with other pens of Mules at £127.50 from RH&C Ayrton, Abbeystead, followed by £127 from S&J France, Over Wyresdale. Horned lambs peaked at £119 for Dalesbreds from S&J France, Over Wyresdale.

Cast Sheep Lancaster cast sheep market sells to an average of over £100. The only disappointment in the cast ewe ring this morning, was that there was not more forward. Texel ewes sold to £131 from TR Prickett, Hutton Roof with others to £119 and £115 from D&K Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe. Mule ewes peaked at £110 from D&K Swarbrick, with all Mule cast ewes forward averaging £101.

J36 Rural Auction Centre: Sale of Prime Lambs and Cast Sheep - Tuesday 30th November 2021 Prime Lambs The prime lamb go from strength to strength with the market average of 284p/kg for 1386 forward. This week’s top call was £161 for 57kg Suffolk lambs from DM & D Cook, Ulverston. This was closely followed by other Suffolk lambs to £155 from RF & CE Hodgson, Ulverston and £154 from M & RW Stirzaker, Milnthorpe. Texel lambs peaked at £156 weighing 55kg from John Twigge, Lindale with plenty of pens of heavy lambs regularly selling in the one hundred and forties. Beltex lambs peaked at £142 from AR & BJ Thompson, Selside. Beltex lambs easily sold in excess of the 300p/kg mark peaking at 345p/kg from TE & J Wadsworth and Son, Kendal with plenty of pens selling around the 330p/kg mark as all Beltex lambs forward averaged £136.

The Mule lamb trade this week peaked at £148 for 56kg lambs from R Capstick & Son, Ingleton closely followed by 50kg Mules selling to £139 from EW & JR Parkinson, Dunsop Bridge. Horned lambs topped at £110.50 for Dalesbreds from R Capstick and Son, Ingleton.

Cast Sheep All sections of ewes would be eight to ten pounds dearer on the week with 500 going through the ring, with plenty of demand for bigger numbers. A wonderful run of pure bred Texel ewes from J Woodburn & Partners, Ulverston sold to an impressive top of £220, with other ewes from the same home selling to £216. Many of the best pure bred ewes were regularly selling over the £200 mark.

Texel cross ewes sold to a top of £188 from AW Crowe, Witherslack. Many of the strongest Continental bred ewes sold at the £140-£150 mark. Mule ewes saw impressive returns with a top of £141 from RF&CE Hodgson, Pennington, with others to £130 from J Woodburn & Partners, Ulverston. Fit medium type Mule ewes sold to the £100-£105 mark. A run of Masham ewes from RJ&OB Simpson, Longsleddale sold to a top of £113 for a pen of

ten. Hill ewes also sold to impressive returns with Cheviots selling to £121 from TH&DM Cornthwaite & Son, Cartmel Fell, with others to £118 from J Woodburn & Partners. The best of the Swaledale ewes were back into the eighties, a top of £88 from JW&TE Sharp, Lyth, with a full pen selling to £84 from M Todd, Longsleddale. Rough Fell ewes saw a top of £84 from RJ&OB Simpson, Longsleddale. Some impressive runs of Herdwick ewes were forward today, with a top of £75 from AJ&L Birkett, Little Langdale, with others selling to £70 from D Leighton, Grizebeck.

Cull rams saw keen bidding from all buyers, with Suffolks selling to £198 from RF&CE Hodgson, Pennington, Texels to £188 from J&O Galbraith & Son, Endmoor and Swaledale tups topping at £116 from Fishwick Bros, Longsleddale.

Just the one Billy goat on the market today which was met with keen interest and sold to £87 from D Cooper, Broughton in Furness.

J36 Rural Auction Centre: Fortnightly Sale of Store Lambs - Thursday 2nd December 2021 An entry of 3169 store lambs were forward today, which was 700 more sold than at the same sale last year. There was a strong trade from start to finish, as to be expected for the time of year with a lot more smaller lambs forward, which met an impressive overall marked averaged of £85.47.

Once again stronger short keep lambs easily selling in excess of the £100 mark, with plenty of big lambs selling in the region of £125. Beltex lambs let the way selling to £130 from MA&JA Winn, Burneside. This was closely followed by Texel lambs selling to £127 from P Iverson, Penrith, £126 from Low Moor Howe, £123 from J&H Bland and Son, Levens, £122 from AJ&L Birkett, Little Langdale and £120 twice from JB Dixon, Grange Over Sands and E Robinson, Whinfell, with too many more to mention selling into the hundreds and teens.

Suffolk lambs peaked at £112 from J&H Bland & Son, Levens with others from the same home selling to £110, this

was closely followed by £108.50 from AJ&SE Burrow, Milnthorpe. Mule lambs sold to a top of £111 from SJ&M Richardson & Son, Lupton, followed by others to £110.50 from RM&D Dixon, Longsleddale with pens of strong Mules regularly selling in excess of the one hundred pound mark with more long turn lambs on the market today.

Horned lambs peaked at £89 for Scottish Blackfaces from MW Parsley, Tebay. Rough Fell lambs peaked at £84 from TLB&J Knowles, Selside. Swaledale lambs twice peaked at £77 from GA Guy, Tebay followed by others to £75 from SJ&M Richardson & Son, Lupton.

The next sale of store lambs is on Thursday 16th December with demand remaining very high.

Lancaster Auction Mart: Weekly Sale of Calves, Store and OTM Cattle - Friday 3rd December 2021 Calves & Weanlings In the calf ring today there was an entry of 61 forward, selling to a very two tiered trade, weanlings and good quality calves continue to be a very strong trade and in big demand, with the next grade of calf down less money.

Hereford weanlings bulls at three month old sold to £450 twice, £430 and £400, with heifers to £310 and £295 from TE&M Kidd, Ellel. A consignment of weanling British Blues from J&G Thornley, Kirkham sold to £445, £440 and £420, with heifer calves from the same home selling to £380. British Blue bull calves sold to £405 from JM&MH France & Son, Littledale. Other British Blue bulls sold to £375 twice and £365 from JP&C Robson, Garstang. The next grade down of calves regularly sold in the two hundreds. Black and White weanling from RE&P Miller, Barnacre sold to £230 and £170, with Black and White rearing calves selling to £120 from JM&MH France & Son, Littledale.

A big entry of calves are already pre booked in for next weeks Christmas Show, all show calves are to be penned by 9.15am.

Store Cattle Once again, this week saw a sharper trade for store cattle, with more short keep cattle forward on the market. This weeks sale topper at £1480 was an consignment of Aberdeen Angus bullocks from Pilling Hall, Pilling. This was followed by a pair of Limousin bullocks selling to £1470 from R Capstick & Son, Ingleton with other Continental bullocks to £1440 for British Blues from J Prest & Son, Bay Horse.

Followed by a pen of three Limousin bullocks to £1430 from R Collinge & Son, Kirkham. Plenty more pens of strong Continental bullocks sold in excess of the £1400 mark. Dairy bullocks peaked at £1450 for Montbeliardes from JM&AG Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe. The consignment from J Prest & Son, Bay Horse saw Montbeliarde bullocks to £1420 and Fleckvieh to £1410. Black and White bullocks peaked at £1240 from TM Gardner, Tatham.

The heifer trade this week topped at £1370 from DE&SM Moorhouse, Natland with a Limousin, followed by £1360 for a Charolais heifer from WA Hodgson, Kendal. Native heifers topped at £1300 from JD&GM Bracken, Catterall, with other Aberdeen Angus heifers to £1280 from G Sagar & Son, Caton. Dairy heifers peaked at £1210 for Montbeliardes from C&B Cummings & Son, Preesall.

Next weeks sale included the Christmas Show for pairs of store bullocks and heifers, show cattle need to be penned by 9.15am.

OTM Cattle There was an entry of 99 cast cows forward today with a planner offering forward but with all types of cows a sharper price, except the small leaner types. An Aberdeen Angus cast steer led the way selling to 229.5p/kg or £1319 from J Oddie & Son, Blackburn. This was closely followed by a young Limousin cow to 217.5p/kg from F&JM Mason, Kirkby Lonsdale, who also sold British Blue OTM heifers to 209.5p/kg. Dairy OTM heifers peaked at 184.5p/kg or £1234 from MJ Fell, Whittington, with plenty more selling round the 180p/kg mark. Best fleshed dairy cows sold to 147.5p/kg numerous times, peaking at £1194 from RT Halhead, Cockerham with others from the same home selling to £1083. Plenty of dairy cows today sold in excess of the £1000 mark.
