What is a role of a kitchen in this modern society?

This quiestion led me to rethink about the women's role in regard with housechores and changing societal status of women. With this furniture, I wanted "cooking" to be more equal and fun activity that involves all family member. The furniture assists physical activity by adjusting it's layout and size. The shape itself allows people to focus on communication.

Traditionally,in Korea, housework including cooking were the responsibility of women. The world is rapidly changing and the number of a double income family is increasing, but modern apartments still have a women-centric kitchen.

Furniture companies launch innovative kitchen furniture but still focuses on lessoning a load of mothers and wives.

Oppressed gender role should be reframed.

Throughout research process, we has figured out that cooking is regarded as an educational method to eduacate and socialize children by following certain steps with each other. Also, many medical and psycological research focuse on cooking to deal with dementia and elderly depression. We discovered an opportunity to overcome gender and generation gap through cooking activity.

Circular Relationship

Many Asian countries, including Korea and China, have a culture of sharing food together. The Chinese round table became my design motif. The center of the round table becomes the place for cooking for everyone and the edge of the circle becomes the space for the individual. In some cases, there is additional module that rotates for the accessibility or the grid is drawn to indirectly show the area for one people. After all, circle is the most effective shape to allow democratic and equal relationship.

While investigating the relationship of circle which overlap, combine and align from various circular furniture, I keep asked myself for the perfect form which can support communication.

Trolley is a furniture that helps a specific activity and the purpose how user is using the furniture can be seen. It acts as a storage and also as a workstation.

Cook Together is a kind of spatial furniture which consists of a stovetop, cooking area, storage area, and space to trim materials. The table module, which acts as a workstation, helps people to participate in a specific cooking activities by zoning in on the activities required for cooking that embody the characteristics of ‘circle’. Trolleys can contain dishes and materials to support every action for food service. Depending on the number or positioning of participants, it is possible to move and twist the trolley to expand the space and fully enjoy the process of cooking with greater freedom of movement.

Human Centered and Community Engaging Hospital Patient Experience in Regard to Service and Spatial Design

The required scope was to provide a service and spatial solution.

The main first task was to create a service and space strategy through consultation that would provide future medical service. The second was to build infrastructure that would create an innovative customer experience.

The three main keywords, which are essential tenets of the brand were to be a lifetime partner for patients equipped with professional skills, to be a medical hub to lead healthcare industry, and to contribute positively to the local people and community.

Through analyzing the existing user experience and service process, nine main agenda items were determined and solutions for each task were designed. Finally, we developed a space program and facade design to integrate our key findings and solutions.

To discover the points where unnecessary waiting occurs during a treatment process.

More than two waiting time was observed for every type of patients.

To discover the journey of patients at each step of treatment after the patients make an reservation.

Overlapped points of user circulation was observed which make certain space very crowded.

Interview We were able to find some points where congestion occured by the result of user circulation analysis. Most of the circulation of Medical Check Patient, Outpatient and Inpatient was overlapped and it generated congestion.

We divided space as 4 sections where congestion was happend the most frequently to interview clients and staff to find space-specific problems.

Relevant horizontal lines, bus platform and remote view of the building are required, so it shoud be approached by impression and formative way.

Exposure rate is high on vehicle view because it faces directly on the main road.

Due to altitude restriction issue, buildings in the surrounding area are generally low, so it is expected that exposure effect will have a great effect.

Because the blocks are separated f o r a c c e s s i b i l i t y, t h e e c o l o g y cell has no connectivity and is concentrated only in one place.

Integrated application of ecology cells is required.

Due to absence of the ecology language in the eastern facade, it is necessary to strengthen the ecology cell by utilizing the high exposure of the new mass.

The environment on the eastern side of the site is poor and it is expected that the effect will be great if it is improved.

After the research, we found key insights from the mass of existing structure, which each offers an opportunitiy for setting architectural strategy.

Problems There is no green space in the surrounding area, so there is no nature-friendly space for patients to spend time in.

For visitors using public transportation, it is difficult to find the main entrance on the main road.

The entrance of the ambulance is not separated from the entrance of the general visiting vehicle, so the entrance of the ambulance is interrupted and the parking space is congested.

Need to strengthen space openness and awareness.

With improved parking infrastructure, piloti's formative language needs to be strengthened.

Enhance awareness by integrating the first floor of the existing building and the existing building.

Install mechanical parking system underground to solve the shortage of parking space.

Redefining a role of Kitchen in a society in which the purpose of eating and cooking isn't to survive and women are not the only one who are in charge of the housework.

OUTCOME

An alternative kitchen island that supports collaborative activities in ktichen to make a process of cooking and eating more pleasant while promoting communication between family members. It consists a circular table and an extendable and rotatable trolley which assists physical activity by involving more people into cooking process.

Semi-structured Interview A casual, semi-structured interview was conducted with 3 students who are currently living in a student house. It provided insights of a general experience and how they want their experience to be. They shared an interesting insight about using whatsapp group that although they want an actual physical interaction, it usually ends up asking who is currently using a laundry machine.

INTERACTION WITH NEIGHBOURS IN A STUDENT HOUSE

How can an interaction in a student house can be more vibrant and long lasting?

Questionnaire 16 participants who are international students living in a student house were recruited. The questionnaire covered a current status of interaction, an ideal interaction with neighbours, their obstacles and desire followed by their personal information.

There are many student houses in the Netherlands that are targeting international students to live in and interact with each other. Although there were some spaces that are designed to increase communication between residents, interactions were rarely happening around those spaces.

I conducted a generative session to discover a current and desired interaction of the users in more depth. I provided a sheet with instruction and a sheet of shapes and an interview asking the reasoning behind their needs and desire. In spite of different personality, they wanted to have a casual relationship to do some activities together such as hanging out.

I want my design to support r esidents living in a student housing to actively involved in a process of establishing their own rule and culture

WIth 3 other students from the same faculty, I conducted a creative session to brainstorm what target users will need and to see the pattern of interact with neighbours. The need itself was quite similar with what I've saw in the previous generative session, however, looking at how they use some objects to communicate with neighbours, for example, through a wall, gave me a valuable insight to proceed the next step.

Communication Tool Tryout The concept of this prototype was to provide residents with an inner communication tool. It is a improved intercom with a touch screen that makes people to visit other people’s places. It challenges users to meet more neighbours as if it's a part of a game. Although the participant was intriged to visit neighbours', the challenge itself wasn't enough to ease an awkwardness to interact with them.

I’ve provided people with a blank sheet of paper to describe their soul food and ask them to have a conversation about the food. I expected talking about it would discover a background story about themselves. I found out that there are different definitions of soul food and it was a great trigger to start and lead the conversation. Using food as a method to build a relationship was effective to reveal their personal story.

As I was also living in a student house where no interaction was going on with neighbours, I decided to host a potluck dinner. They shared useful things to share and enjoyed seeing different look of a room that has a same layout as theirs.

Although hosting an event would definitely help people to build a relationship, I felt that it would be hard to expect to be happen regularly without having a motivated facilitator.

● The whole process took longer than it supposed to be. ● The task was unfairly distributed which made some participants either bored or exhausted. ● Interaction occured most intensily while making dumplings. ● Not everyone treats a recipe in the same way.

- Some more tend to follow a provided recipe whilst others trust their own intuition and experience. ● Providing too much or detailed instruction would rather reduce interaction between participants. ● Each people has a different skill of cooking and their cultural background also affects.

During the test, some students sharing the kitchen came by to have dinner who also showed interests and involved in some steps. One student who lived quite long in a building told me that everyone used to live with doors oepend in the past. Since everyone’s door is closed now, it was hard to notice when other people want to have a conversation.

With this unexpected incident, I found an opportunity to drag people who didn't participate in the activity. It will help users to create a fun and new culture that everyone can be involved.

Final Design My final design supports to host a dumpling party easily. Dumplings can be a method to share food memories to reveal and clarify cultural identities.

Not only because a process of cooking as it requires time, space and hands, but also because of its universality and cultural specificity.

Through a series of activities for making dumplings with neighbours, people would build a decent relationship and create their own eating and living culture eventually by understanding each other's similarities and differences.

Analyse the usability and user experience of an existing product, come up with a redesign for its user interface and evaluate it in order to present a final redesign to improve the original design.

DeLonghi DDSX220WF is a newly released Dehumidifier that is for domestic use. It has three main functions: (1) Ventilation (2) Dehumidifying (3) Purification With these functions, the product control the temperature and humidity level, neutralise bacteria and allergens, and improve the air quality.

The appliance can be controlled through the control panel on the device and through an external application . It also has both manual and preset setting including dry mode that maximise the capacity of the machine to dry clothes faster on the control panel and the app allows users to achieve everything that is possible on the control panel as well as more complex personalized settings.

Three different personas were defined in regard with factors such as household type, climatic and environment factor, previous experience of using a dehumidifier or an air purifier, accommodation type which led to identify purpose of use for each persona. As most participants were acquaintances, their persona was defined based on the information that was already known. People with Dutch, Korean and Taiwanese nationalities were recruited.

Scenarios were created in order to allow participants to achieve some tasks and each scenarios were described differently based on the persona that is defined by us.

The results of the analysis will be presented through the ‘Testable Targets’; a list of targets that were set up in the beginning of the research, after the original De'Longhi dehumidifier was evaluated. Considering the reasoning behind the design decisions and the purpose of the user evaluation, the following targets were set up in order to assess the improvement.

Experienced users used preset modes more actively who were mostly Asian who are living in humid area.

For non-experienced users, the modes are harder to use autonomously (without any introductions from websites or manuals).

The only nonexperienced user who tried a preset mode during the scenarios misunderstood how it worked.

THe design should clearly differentiate the pre-set modes with the manual settings.

Does the design give users a clear understanding of how to use the machine so that they can take only necessary steps in order to reach an objective

As it shows, there was a clear distinction between preset and manual mode in the improved design which enable users to take less and relevant tasks.

Fall 2014 Kookmin Univ., South Korea Renovate the 29m2 sized space into a travel agency.

The word "teum" means ‘crack’ or ‘a gap between something’ in Korean. The Travel Agency TEUM invites modern people to escape from the stress of daily life through traveling by providing a service that enables a trip time and cost efficient.

Through designing the space with this gap as a keyword, customers feel as though they are in a new place from the moment they enter.

To express the design concept logically in space, I used a Voronoi diagram. In the process, we choosed several tourist spots, connected spots to make face, and applied hight difference to each faces to design a unique ceiling design which differentiates oneself from others.

Ceiling • In mathematics, a Voronoi diagram is a partitioning of a plane into regions based on distance to points in a specific subset of the plane. It is usually used to set the shortest distance between the place and place.

Step 3

• In the design process, we randomly selected some tourist spots , and used this spots to design the ceiling by connecting them using Voronoi principle. • At the 3rd step, we applied different hight levels to each parts.
