CRumlinVILLAGE HISTORY
CRUMLIN VIADUCT WAS A LARGE RAILWAY CROSSING BUILT TO ALLOW THE NEWPORT, ABERGAVENNY, AND HEREFORD RAILWAYS ACROSS THROUGH THE EBBW VALLEY. IT WAS BUILT IN 1853-1857 BY THOMAS KENNARD AND WAS THE THIRD HIGHEST VIADUCT IN THE WORLD AT 204 FT HIGH. IT EVEN BECAME KNOWN AS ‘ONE OF THE MOST SIGNIFICANT EXAMPLES OF TECHNOLOGICAL ACHIEVEMENT DURING THE INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION’. HOWEVER, IN 1965, IT WAS DEMOLISHED DUE TO COSTS.
Crumlin Colliery Navigation
BUILT BY PATRIDGE, JONES & COMPANY LTD IN 1911, AFTER 4 YEARS OF CONSTRUCTION, CRUMLIN NAVIGATION COLLIERY WAS A COAL MINE AND STRUCTURE WHICH TRANSPORTED AND PRODUCED COAL FOR ALL OVER THE WORLD. HOWEVER, THE COAL INDUSTRY WAS STARTING TO DECLINE BY THE 1960S, RESULTING IN CRUMLIN NAVIGATION COLLIERY CLOSING IN 1967.
CRUMLIN VILLAGE BECAME A SMALL BUT POPULAR VILLAGE AFTER THE CONSTRUCTION OF CRUMLIN VIADUCT. THE VILLAGE BECAME SITUATED WITH MORE HOUSING, SHOPS, A LOCAL SCHOOL, AND A CHURCH - SOME OF WHICH ARE STILL IN USE TODAY.
CRumlinINSTITUTE
CRUMLIN INSTITUTE WAS BUILT IN 1920 AS A WORKMEN’S CLUB AND INSTITUTE. A WORKMEN’S HALL AND INSTITUTE WERE MAINLY USED DURING THIS TIME AS A PLACE FOR THE COMMUNITY TO GATHER AND SOCIALISE, WHILST LEARNING THROUGH THE USE OF READING ROOMS AND LIBRARIES. THE INSTITUTE CONTAINED A BILLIARDS HALL AND PUBLIC HALL ALONG WITH MULTIPLE READING ROOMS. HOWEVER, AFTER THE CLOSURE OF THE NAVIGATION COLLIERY IN 1967, THE INSTITUTE WENT INTO MAJOR DECLINE. IT HAS NEVER BEEN LISTED AS A GRADED BUILDING.

TODAY, CRUMLIN VILLAGE IS A SMALL COMMUNITY VILLAGE WITH A SMALL NUMBER OF CONVENIENCE STORES, PUBS, AND RETAIL UNITS. MANY OF THE LOCALS ATTENDED THE SAME PRIMARY AND SECONDARY SCHOOL WHILST GOING TO THE ONLY RUGBY AND FOOTBALL CLUB THERE IS IN THE VILLAGE. TO VISIT AND USE MORE FACILITIES
SIMILAR TO THESE, THEY HAVE TO VENTURE OUT TO THE NEIGHBOURING TOWNS AND VILLAGES LIKE NEWBRIDGE AND BLACKWOOD.
VILLAGE CRumlinINSTITUTE
CURRENTLY, THE GROUND FLOOR AND FIRST FLOOR OF THE INSTITUTE ARE EMPTY AND HAS BEEN SINCE THE END OF THE 2020 CORONAVIRUS LOCKDOWN. OVER THE RECENT YEARS, IT HAS BEEN USED AS A YOUTH CLUB BY THE LOCAL COMMUNITY AND AS MULTI-USE OFFICES BY CAERPHILLY COUNCIL. HOWEVER, THE LOWER GROUND FLOOR STILL HAS MANY RETAIL UNITS THAT ARE IN USE.

FOLLOWING THE RESEARCH OF CRUMLIN VILLAGE AND THE PAST USE OF THE INSTITUTE/COMMUNITY CENTRE, PROPOSING A NEW VIBRANT MULTI-USE COMMUNITY CENTRE WOULD BRING THE LOCALS AND OTHER MEMBERS OF THE SURROUNDING COMMUNITIES CLOSER AND ENCOURAGE THOSE OF ALL AGES TO LEARN, PARTICIPATE AND CONTRIBUTE TO THEMSELVES AND THE LOCAL ECONOMY.
The centre WOULD offer a new cafe space, two multi-use halls with two adaptable rooms for various classes, a soft play area for younger children and a rentable coworking office and social place.
with the community centre being located on the ground AND FIRST FLOOR, THE LOWER GROUND FLOOR WOULD MAINTaIN ITS RENTAL RETAIL UNITS WHILST REINSTATING OLD ENTRANCES TO THE UPPER FLOOR.

THE NEW CAFE SPACE REINSTATES THE ORIGINAL WOOD FLOORING ALONG WITH THE SKIRTING BOARDS AND VIEW INTO THE MAIN HALL. ADDING A STAINED GLASS VISION ONTO THE MAIN WALL OPENS UP THE CAFE AND CORRIDOR SPACE WHILST ADDING MORE CHARACTER AND AESTHETIC TO THE BUILDING.

THE CO-WORKING SOCIAL SPACE ALLOWS PERMANENT STAFF AND REMOTE WORKERS TO JOIN AND SOCIALISE ON THEIR BREAKS AND/ OR WHILST WORKING. MAKING IT EASIER FOR THOSE TO ACCESS A SPACE WHERE IT FEELS LIKE AN OFFICE FROM HOME.

this bespoke storage wall element is located on the ground floor in the main hall. it has several sections for different size storage uses along with a mural of the local area as the main creative feature.
