Celebrating the Poetry of Jesús Papoleto Meléndez

W

E GREW UP DURING THE EMERGENCE of the Nuyorican Movement during the 1960s. It was an era of self-awareness for many mainland puertorriqueños; an awakening of our true identity; and a re-learning of our native culture infused by the politics and teachings of radical groups such as the Young Lords and the Black Panther Party. By the early 1970s, a number of prominent Nuyorican poets and writers took center stage, which shook the foundation of American literature as we knew it.

Piri Thomas and Jesús Papoleto Meléndez were among the first Nuyorican writers to publish books during the height of the Nuyorican Movement. So we are pleased to share some insight of the poet we affectionately call “Papoleto,” in celebration of his new collection of poetry, Hey Yo! Yo Soy! 40 Years of Nuyorican Street Poetry, A Bilingual Edition.

We both met Papoleto at different times early in his career. Carmen, who would later become known as an avid activist in her community, met Papoleto when he had just published his third book, Street Poetry & Other Poems, through his association with her brother, the poet Pedro Pietri. Sam, who was born in the South Bronx but raised in Puerto Rico, returned to New York in 1970 and quickly became involved in the poetry scene by hosting and participating in poetry readings throughout New York City. Our circle of friends were an extension of similar groups of artists, musicians and poets that developed into a “Nuyorican” thing, which included progressive political activism on both a personal and social level, and addressed various issues that were intertwined with identity and the community. It was poets and writers such as Papoleto, who served as an inspiration to the Movement.

In Hey Yo! Yo Soy!, Papoleto combines the work of his first three poetry collections from the 1960s and 1970s. His early poems take you back to a time and place where his generation fought tooth and nail to put into action whatever legal remedies had been gained from the Civil Rights Movement; and to force the necessary social changes that would even the playing field for all people of color who had been disenfranchised in the democratic U.S. of A. Walking us through our conflicted dual identities and leading us to a place where we begin to understand who we are as a people, Papoleto’s poems wax nostalgia for those of us who lived during that era, but he also reminds us 40 YEARS OF NUYORICAN STREET POETRY, A BILINGUAL EDITION | VII

how much more there is left for us to do. More importantly, these early works, which laid the groundwork for Nuyorican poets from that point forward also serves as an historical reference for today’s emerging poets, no matter what their nationality is.

This collection shows the stark reality of living in the ghetto while hanging on to hopeless dreams in an “improvised” existence. As you read between the lines, you’ll also experience the disillusionment of the so-called political and social gains during the 1960s. Papoleto’s words unabashedly points out postmovement contradictions, where the leadership of this urban rebellion walks away to the mountain top with the proverbial piece of the “pie-in-the-sky” sans the masses that are left to survive the not-so-gainful conditions of the ghetto.

His is a real anger at false expectations, at dreams deferred that eventually die, and at a promised liberation that for too many just never arrived.

Papoleto’s collection begins with a fierce battle cry “¡Hey Yo / Yo Soy!,” the title poem of this book. It is here where he proclaims an appropriate summation of years of labor and struggle in formulating and claiming his poetic identity and voice. As this collection takes a leap back in time to detail the journey that the poet has gone through, we witness his beginnings, from looking out his window purveying the streets of El Barrio to putting the sounds and images he experiences on the page. As the collection progresses, Papoleto takes to the road to create distance and find perspective when he journeys to the Homeland (Puerto Rico) and then to the West Coast to meet our primos (cousins), the Chicanos. Throughout this collection, as Papoleto’s poetry evolves and changes, we realize that this is not just a Nuyorican thing; it’s a universal thing.

It’s also worth mentioning that Papoleto’s poetry is about the visual cues he has become known for – the “cascadance” of words, phrases and verses as they are artfully arranged on the page – and in this collection, we witness its emergence. It’s also about the cohesive “travel through time” theme of this collection that adds the dimension of the “Poet as Observer Participant,” so not only do you get to enjoy good poetry, you get a glimpse of a true poet at work as he travels back in time. RECIMOS DURANTE EL SURGIMIENTO del Movimiento Nuyorriqueño durante la década de 1960. Era una época de autoconsciencia para muchos de los puertorriqueños que vivían en los Estados Unidos continentales, un despertar de nuestra verdadera identidad; y un redescubrimiento de nuestra cultura nativa vigorizado por la política y las enseñanzas de grupos radicales tales como los Young Lords y el Partido de las Panteras Negras. Para los principios de la década de 1970, varios poetas y escritores nuyorriqueños prominentes empezaron a ocupar el centro del escenario, lo cual sacudió los cimientos de la literatura estadounidense tal y como la conocíamos.

Piri Thomas y Jesús Papoleto Meléndez fueron contados entre los primeros escritores nuyorriqueños que publicaron libros durante el cenit del Movimiento Nuyorriqueño. Por eso, nos complace dar nuestro punto de vista sobre el poeta que llamamos con cariño “Papoleto,” en celebración de su nueva colección de poesía ¡Ey yo! ¡Yo soy! 40 años de poesía nuyorriqueña de la calle, edición bilingüe.

Los dos conocimos a Papoleto en diversas ocasiones, en los comienzos de su carrera. Carmen, quien más tarde se haría conocida como una activista ferviente en su comunidad, conoció a Papoleto cuando él acabó de publicar su tercer libro, Poesía de la calle y otros poemas, a través de su asociación con el hermano de Carmen, el poeta Pedro Pietri. Sam, quien nació en el Sur del Bronx pero creció en Puerto Rico, regresó a Nueva York en 1970 y con rapidez se involucró en el panorama de poesía al ofrecer y participar en recitales de poesía por la ciudad de Nueva York. Nuestro círculo de amigos fue una extensión de grupos similares de artistas, músicos y poetas que se transformó en algo “nuyorriqueño” e incluyó activismo progresista en tanto un nivel personal como un social y trató varias cuestiones que se entrecruzaban con la identidad y la comunidad. Fueron poetas y escritores, como Papoleto, que sirvieron como inspiración para el movimiento.

nuestra identidad doble para llegar a un punto en donde nos entendemos como una gente, los poemas de Papoleto están llenos de nostalgia para nosotros que vivimos durante esa época, pero también nos recuerda cuanto más nos queda por hacer. Aún más importante, estas primeras obras, las cuales prepararon el terreno para poetas nuyorriqueños futuros, también sirven como una referencia histórica para los poetas emergentes de hoy, no importa su nacionalidad.

Esta colección muestra la realidad cruda de los que viven en el gueto mientras se aferran a sueños desesperados en una existencia “empobrecida”.

Mientras lees entre líneas, también experimentas la desilusión de los llamados triunfos políticos y sociales de la década de 1960. Las palabras de Papoleto indican sin vergüenza las contradicciones que surgieron después del movimiento: El liderazgo de esta rebelión urbana sale al cima de la montaña con una llave a los proverbiales castillos en el aire dejando las masas, las que han olvidado para subsistir en las condiciones menos ideales del gueto. Se ve su enojo verdadero con expectativas falsas, sueños incumplidos que al final mueren y una liberación prometida que simplemente nunca les llegó a demasiadas personas.

La colección de Papoleto empieza con un feroz grito de batalla, “¡Ey yo / yo soy!”, el título de este libro. En ese poema, proclama una recapitulación adecuada de años de luchas y trabajo, formulando y reclamando su voz e identidad como poeta. Mientras esta colección retrocede en el tiempo para detallar el viaje del poeta, somos testigos de sus principios desde que se asomó por la ventana para observar las calles de El Barrio hasta que puso los sonidos e imágenes que experimentó en papel. Al avanzar por la colección, Papoleto va de peregrinación para crear distancia y adquirir una nueva perspectiva más amplia cuando viaja a su patria (Puerto Rico) y después a la Costa Oeste para conocer a nuestros primos, los chicanos. A través de esta colección, mientras cambia y evoluciona la poesía de Papo, nos damos cuenta de que esto no es sólo un asunto nuyorriqueño sino uno universal.

También vale la pena mencionar que se destacan en la poesía de Papo los signos visuales por los que es conocido – la cascadencia de palabras, frases y versos arreglados con arte en la página – y en esta colección, somos testigos de su afloramiento. También se trata del tema cohesivo de “viajar por el tiempo” de esta colección, el cual agrega la dimensión de “el Poeta como Observador Participante”. Así que no sólo tienes la oportunidad de disfrutar buena poesía, sino que puedes echarle un ojo a un verdadero poeta en trabajo mientras viaja por el tiempo. Translating the Nuyorican Experience Through the Eyes of Jesús Papoleto Meléndez

UYORICAN. Before working on this book, it was a word that didn’t mean much to me. I was only vaguely acquainted with the culture behind it from a video clip that I had seen in a sophomore-year Spanish class in college about “Nuyoricanism,” featuring the Nuyrocian Poets Cafe.

I remember thinking to myself, “Poetry and performances? Sounds cool. I should check it out one day.” But I never really got the chance. Yet when Gabrielle David, the editor of the book you’re now holding in your hands, asked me to head a team of translators to translate a volume of Nuyorican poetry by Jesús Papoleto (“Papo”) Meléndez, I was in for a crash course on the Nuyorican perspective.

I was pleasantly surprised by what I found. In Buddhism, there is a symbol that is mentioned quite often: a lotus flower springing from the mud.

It’s used to explain that our nature as sentient beings can entail confusion, dualism, and consequently pain, yet it is our nature that makes enlightment possible. The struggle of life itself is enlightenment. Just as the lotus needs to be immersed in mud to bloom into a beautiful flower that springs forth unsullied, the images in Papo’s poetry – poverty, junkies, cockroaches – are of a strange beauty borne of, but unmarred by, undesirable elements. The metaphor can also be interpreted in a more general sense: the joy of the moment, the necessity of difficult circumstances to bring about beautiful and worthwhile outcomes, or the special kind of beauty that can be found anywhere. I saw all of these things in Papo’s poetry, and to explore and share this magnificent perspective fueled me as I translated, sometimes for hours in the comfort of my own home and sometimes for fifteen minutes here and five minutes there in the wee hours when I was temping as an overnight proofreader at a printing firm.

Another characteristic that struck me about Papo’s poetry is his amazing generosity. Instead of hiding behind esoteric symbols – fun as that is – Papo brings you into his world and perspective, vulnerably and unapologetically, and it was this generosity that shined through as the team of translators, Carolina Fung Feng, Marjorie González, and I, along with Gabrielle and Papo, worked through the proofs of the translations.

I think it is sometimes easy for writers, especially those who are very proud of and attached to their work, to forget that literary translators often have to act like writers in their own right and that even though the work is more interpretive than creative, it goes beyond merely exchanging casa for “house” or el pajarito for “the little bird.” It is art, and with that, comes all the inexactitudes that make art both difficult and worthwhile.

Fortunately, working with Papo was quite the opposite. Normally, for translators, the authors best serve to provide deeper understanding of their work by elaborating on moments that are unclear, after which it becomes the translator’s responsibility to render them. Papo, however, quickly picked up the basic methodology translators use to deal with adapting language and culture. It was during these moments when it was necessary to deviate from the literal that Papo showed his amazing generosity of spirit and of his work.

Unlike in the past, where I had viewed authors as obstacles, in need of constant explanation as to why something wasn’t translated literally, Papo’s help had become invaluable during our sessions, and I often found myself feeling both surprised and thankful for his contributions during our many long meetings.

And, man, were those meetings long! Work as a translator is solitary. You labor over a document, making glorious choices, feeling like a linguistic Mozart, but never get to share the process with anyone. On the contrary, every week, “Team Papo” would meet in the lobby of Hunter College’s School of Social Work in Spanish Harlem, and page by page, poem by poem, we would share our thoughts, stories, and perspectives from our varied experiences: Myself, a gringo from the Midwest turned New Yorker who had spent time in Spain; Marjorie, whose family was Chilean, but had grown up mostly in the States; Carolina, born in Costa Rica to Chinese parents; Gabrielle, a native New Yorker whose family comes from North Carolina and South America; Papo, who needs no explanation; and of course, the occasional audience member from El Centro de Estudios Puertorriqueños, whose office door was only a few yards away, or the custodians of the school who would listen as we talked loudly and without regard about the use of coger or the difference between mierda and “shit.”

It was laborious; it was hard; it was midwifing and un parto, but as difficult as it was, it was glorious and exhilarating. It is my sincere hope that you enjoy reading this collection of poems, in either language, as much as Papo did writing them in English or as Team Papo did bringing them to el mundo hispanohablante. h — Adam Wier Head Translator September, 2012
