Can Acupuncture Help My Pet? By Susaanti Follingstad, Acupuncture for Animals

A

cupuncture works with underlying energy and can be used in animals for most conditions. Some of the issues I’ve used acupuncture to effectively address include kidney failure, arthritis, liver related issues (hepatic lipidosis), behavior/emotional issues (aggression, anxiety, fear), necrotic ears (tissue dying from lack of blood flow), severe itching, back problems (pain, protruding spine, degenerative myelopathy), lupus and leg injuries (see my website for other uses). It can also support recovery or address side effects related to regular medical treatments (acupuncture treatment is coordinated with your vet and the first treatment must be within 14 days of the last vet visit). Acupuncture is generally accepted to be non-toxic with minimal side effects. Each animal’s reaction to needling is unique, thus unpredictable; some calm down, others resist. They don’t necessarily react as when getting a shot, since needles are only slightly thicker than a

hair. I once treated two sister dogs, one anxious, one easygoing, whose reactions to being needled were the opposite! And even nervous or resistant pets can benefit. If a pet doesn’t tolerate needling, we can try palpation. When treatment is effective, animals’ conditions often respond quickly. Benefits (which vary by individual) can be seen as recovery or improvement or as slowing of deterioration (your observations are key in noting progress since we can’t ask them). It can take several treatments to identify if it’s being beneficial. If a pet doesn’t respond well, I’ll work with you to research other treatment options. My main goals are to bring affordable care to those who would benefit and to reduce suffering. I treat in their home which eases anxiety for many and avoids a drive home, which can undo positive treatment effects. And I let you decide what to pay to ensure it’s affordable.

Annie’s Story By Bonnie Lefbom, DVM, Diplomate, ACVIM, (Cardiology) in Collaboration with Dan Rollyson for CVCA Cardiac Care for Pets Photos Courtesy of Dan Rollyson 11+ years after Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA) diagnosis, the most frequently seen congenital defect of dogs, Annie had surgery and continues to be a bundle of joy and energy! Annie joined the Rollyson family via a rescue site called K9 Furbabies. Annie, who originally came from a puppy mill in West Virginia, was born with a congenital condition called Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA). It is a failure of a large blood vessel (ductus arteriosus) to close after birth. Pets with this defect often die in the first year of life. Without surgery, Annie would probably have died before her second birthday.

On the morning of October 11, 2003, Dan and Eileen, along with their older collie Nikki, met Annie for the first time. When Annie, like a typical puppy, had finished teasing Nikki, she gently rested her head on the older dog’s foot and closed her eyes. There wasn’t a dry eye in the place. At that point, there was little doubt as to where Annie would be spending the rest of her life! Annie was taken to CVCA Cardiac Care for Pets and assessed for the surgical procedure by Dr. Bonnie Lefbom, a board certified veterinary cardiologist and her team. Surgery was performed on December 10th 2003. Dr. Lefbom successfully closed the PDA during

the surgery and Annie recovered with lots of TLC from the surgical team at CVCA. She was able to go home to her family the very next day. The procedure was so successful that Annie was taken off all of her heart medications! Annie celebrated her second birthday on March 28, 2005. She was healthy, happy and a bundle of raw energy. A subsequent follow-up cardiac examination indicated that she was doing very well and could expect to live a normal, active life with a normal life-span. Annie is certified by Therapy Dogs International and along with her housemate Sugar, visits hospice to give respite to terminally ill patients, their families and caregivers. The

pair also visit area nursing homes where all are particularly impressed that Annie and Sugar take their commands in both English and Spanish. Annie has a wonderful personality and is loved by all...except, perhaps, for the squirrels in her back yard. She particularly enjoys herding sheep at the annual Collie Rescue of the Carolinas reunion. She is also a regular participant at the annual CVCA & Inova Pediatric Heart Picnic, where the animals who have had cardiac surgery at CVCA get together with the children who have had cardiac surgery at INOVA. Annie is currently 11½ years old and still a bundle of joy and energy. Thanks to K9 Furbabies Rescue, her dedicated family, and her veterinary care team, she continues to live a remarkable, long and healthy life, bringing happiness to many. From the Publisher Hello everyone, I am so excited to bring you the next edition of the Maryland/DC Pet Lovers Companion. It is once again an outstanding educational, comprehensive resource for pet lovers in Maryland and DC thanks to the amazing Pet Lovers Companion team! You are going to love this edition and use it all year long. The Maryland/DC Pet Lovers Companion is part of a larger family of DC Metro pet publications. Take time to look for the Northern Virginia Pet Lovers Companion or the quarterly NOVADog Magazine (novadogmagazine.com). They are both wonderful resources for all of your pet needs. Our family of publications works tirelessly to provide educational resources, support non-profits and animal welfare organizations to improve the lives of abused and homeless animals and provide you information on the fun and charitable events to attend that support our mission of helping area animals. There are so many opportunities to engage and so many wonderful events coming up; I hope to meet you at an upcoming event. On a personal note, over this past year we welcomed a pair of rescue bunnies into our home. Their names are Alice and Boppity and their fun love story needs to be shared. They were both living at the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria and over their first few weeks in the shelter the staff would find Boppity in Alice’s cage constantly. No matter what the staff did, these two rabbits found a way to be together. So instead of devising new ways to separate their cages, the staff decided to create a larger pen for them to share and it’s been cohabitation bliss for these two. We adopted this lovable duo and they have shared their happy, adorable selves with us each day! Even Maggie, our 8 year old mixed breed has taken to them! Our Facebook page and newsletters have been growing and growing. Be the first to know about the

giveaways and contests we hold and also learn about fun events in your area. It’s an active way to engage with us and other pet lovers – and it’s quick and easy to do, Like us today AND become a regular visitor! www.facebook.com/PetLoversCompanion and if you are a dog-lover, like NOVADog’s page too: www. facebook.com/novadog. If you choose to have your deceased pet cremated, do a little homework. Check the internet and with other pet owners, family or friends. Speak to the crematory company directly - do not just rely on the veterinarian. It is your pet, and it is your choice where to have your beloved pet cremated. As the owner you should be able to have some input into your services. Is it really an individual or just divided ashes? Communal? Choice of box or urn? Sealed or not? A clip of hair? A paw print? Is there a witnessed cremation? Expedited service? Can ashes be divided into 2 or more containers? How do you get cremains back? Are there provisions for cremating pocket pets, birds and rabbits at a reasonable rate? Are

15

the rates for cremating a dog or cat reasonable also? In most of our local area it is against the law to bury in your yard & people in apartments have no yard. Pet cemeteries are expensive. Cremation has become the most acceptable, economical, mainstream and humane manner of dealing with a deceased pet. Cremation with return of ashes allows you to forever have them with you no matter where you live. Before being overcome with grief and distress - take some initiative - and do some homework. Find out what to do and make your own decisions. It will make the passing time easier for you.

sity. These health problem are often related to poor quality or biologically inappropriate diets. Our conversations usually begin with a discussion about the “obligate carnivore.” What does it mean? Obligate carnivores cannot survive without meat in their diets. Their genetic makeup dictates that they thrive on the flesh of other animals, and they get their moisture from their food rather than from drinking. Most cats would rarely consume grains or vegetables because all they need would be already consumed by their prey. Domesticated cats are still obligate carnivores. Commercial cat foods tend to contradict the obligate carnivore’s biologically appropriate diet. Dry cat foods high in carbohydrates of any kind, including grains, and extremely low in moisture, are partially responsible for many of the most common cat diseases. Low quality ingredients, environmental factors and genetics also play a role. How does the obligate carnivore suffer from biologically inappropriate foods? Cats that consume exclusively dry foods often suffer from urinary tract disorders and kidney disease. Foods that do not contain enough moisture rob the body and its organs of moisture. A cat that frequents a water bowl is usually dehydrated. Dry foods tend to have an average of 10% moisture where most canned foods are 70%-80% moisture. No matter how much water a cat drinks, it cannot make up for the moisture that is lost through digesting dry foods. Cats need moisture to keep their urinary tract flushed of bacteria and to keep the kidneys functioning properly. Cats that consume high carbohydrate foods tend to develop high blood sugar and Diabetes. Diabetes can lead to loss of appetite, vomiting and dehydration—eventually damaging the kidneys and other vital organs. Cats with diabetes will urinate frequently and often eat ravenously because their bodies cannot properly utilize their food. Hence, the constant consumption of high

21

sugar starches can be extremely detrimental to an obligate carnivore. In nature a cat would hunt for its food and consume its prey almost entirely. Our beloved house cats do not have to work (at least not very hard) for their food. Our less active indoor cats have become morbidly obese. These cats are consuming far too many inappropriate ingredients. Diets containing high quality meats, low carbohydrates and a high moisture content are the most biologically appropriate. A high quality canned, dehydrated or raw diet is usually the best way to prevent the most common cat diseases that seem to run rampant in today’s cat population.

snarling at your daughter. Dogs tolerate a lot, but on this day, it was more than your dog could take. Conserving Your Dog’s Spoons

• Licking lips

What if your dog is having a bad day? Let’s say that a dog snapped at him on his daily walk. There’s construction next door and lots of loud noises and strangers in hard hats. And he ate something in the backyard that upset his tummy.

How can you help your dog? Maybe by leaving him home instead of taking him to the soccer game. Or letting him relax in his crate with a bully stick, away from your guests.

Dog Bites Never Come “Out of Nowhere”

Most importantly, you can help by being present with your dog and knowing when to remove him from a situation. A dog isn’t able to say, “Hey, I’ve got one spoon left and if this kid pulls my ear one more time, I’m done!” Be your dog’s advocate. Your dog will love you for it.

Your daughter likes to hug and kiss your dog, and that has never been a problem. But if your dog was having a bad day and had run out of spoons … well, he could end up

Is Your Pet at a Healthy Weight? By Pennye Jones-Napier, Co-Owner, The Big Bad Woof Retail & Delivery

O

ne of the best things you can do for your companion animals is keep them at a healthy weight, and yet we see a lot of dogs and cats that are slightly to extremely overweight with corresponding chronic health issues like diabetes, arthritis, endocrine and metabolic imbalances, having difficulty breathing, and early onset heart issues. Many of these diseases can be prevented and / or reversed simply by paying attention to their diets and using some common sense approaches to help them lose weight. Some easy changes to their diets can go a long way to keeping them lean and helping them lose excess fat and weight. Here are some of our favorite tips: • If you have an animal suffering from obesity and/or diabetes, we find that the

fastest way to help them lose excess weight is by switching from all dry food to a meat based-diet. Go Paleo! This can be canned, raw, or freeze-dried / dehydrated. If you need to feed kibble due to cost and expense cut back to kibble once a day and meatbased once a day. • Feed raw meaty bones in place of a meal. For cats and small dogs chicken necks are a great choice, and for the bigger pups, duck and turkey necks are the preferred size. If they are marrow bones, remove the marrow which has a high fat content. • Make up a bone broth to use with the food. You can cut back on the amount of food and provide a very rich natural food supplement with the broth.

• Add in fermented products like Answers Fermented Fish Stock which is low calorie and will help heal their gut, and balance their system. • Decrease calories by adding veggies to the diet, like steamed broccoli, green beans, cauliflower, kidney beans, etc. • Make sure that you are giving them lowcalorie treats, like Stella & Chewy’s Carnivore Crunch, which only contain 2 calories pet treat. You also want to make sure that you decrease calories if you are providing a lot of treats during training. • PAY ATTENTION to feeding guidelines if you switch their foods, as the kilo-calories may change significantly from one formula to another. • If feeding a kibble, choose a Senior or

Weight Management formula with a high meat content and watch how much you are feeding. There are some great choices in holistic foods including grain-free formulas from RAWZ, NULO, NOW!, Amicus, Orijen, and whole-grain formulas from Verus, Fromm and Horizon. • If they inhale their food offer them a hunt and seek feeder so they have to work for their kibble. There are a number of great feeders available now with different ways to get at the food, and it also offers mental stimulation for both dogs and cats. There are a number of ways you can keep your animals fit and provide opportunities for you to also join in the fun and burn calories, even if it means going for long walks with your dogs (and cats) or setting up playtimes for them. Get out and play!

Adopt a Rescued Dog

There are several benefits to adopting a rescued dog. Many rescued dogs are mature adults who are housebroken. Adult dogs are past the stage of chewing on your shoes and furniture. They are loyal to the hand that feeds them, shelters them, and loves them. Give a loving pet a second chance – Adopt. Listed on the following pages are telephone contacts for individual dog breed rescues. If the breed you are looking for is not listed, it may be because the contact for that breed has declined to be in the book or we are not aware of them. Keep in mind when calling these contacts that in many cases you are calling someone’s home. Most of these people are volunteers who donate their time for the love of the breed. Be respectful of the hours you call. Also, be aware that it may take time to get a response to your call.

Dog Parks Continue to Grow

hese parks provide a wonderful opportunity for dogs to exercise and socialize with T other canines. Some dog parks are private and for members only with fees and strict enforcement of park rules. Private parks are rare. Most are the result of grassroots move-

ments and rely largely on users to adhere to rules, clean up after the dogs, and keep the peace by removing aggressive animals. Without the screening required by private parks, there is no way of knowing if all park participants are properly socialized and are current on vaccinations. Most parks operate smoothly. Some parks provide space for dogs to run off leash while others set the stage for positive interaction among pets and people. Note: Some parks may not be completely fenced. Usage may be limited to residents of the particular area.
