Saving Best Friends’ Lives Thanks to new advances in medicine and a growing emphasis on preventative care and nutrition, our pets are living longer, healthier lives. Unfortunately, longer lifespans also mean that our pets are exposed to more agerelated illnesses and other diseases, like cancer. In fact, nearly 50 percent of pets over the age of ten will develop some type of cancer, and this year alone, an estimated 6 million dogs and 6 million cats will be diagnosed with the disease, according to the National Cancer Institute. The growing prevalence of this awful disease has led many pet owners to ask themselves, “What can I do if my dog or cat is diagnosed with cancer?” Like human treatments, pet cancer therapies often include surgery, radiation or chemotherapy, and the costs for these life-saving treatments can be extremely high. That’s where FETCH a Cure comes in.

here are many benefits to having access to dog parks. In densely populated areas with heavy traffic and leash laws, it can be difficult to stimulate your dogâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s need for safe socialization and exercise. Dog parks give us and our dogs the freedom to run, play, and socialize off-leash in a safe and secure place. However, not all dog parks are equal, and not all dogs do well at every park. There are key aspects to examine before determining if a dog park is the best place for your pup. Cleanliness: All dog parks should have dog waste bags and trashcans for owners to clean up after their dog. If these supplies are not provided, please bring your own and encourage other owners to clean up as well. Drinking water: A good dog park will have a water source with clean bowls. If the water is frequently dirty or inadequate, it is recommend-

ed to bring your own water and collapsible bowl. If it is a shared water source, it is recommended that your change the water out before your dog drinks from it. Shared water and dirty water can spread illnesses and bacteria. Also, be sure that your dog does not drink out of standing water like puddles and ponds. Shade: It is very important that in the warmer months that there are accessible shaded areas for dogs to rest if they begin to overheat. Size & Crowd: A dog park that is too large, can pose unforeseen problems if your dog wanders too far from you. It is recommended that you can spot your dog quickly in an emergency. Furthermore, a park that is too small can cause problems between dogs that cannot move away from each other easily. If a dog park has too many dogs in a small space, that can create a targeting environment. Dogs need to be able to

walk away in situations that make them uncomfortable. If they are not able to move away effectively, it can cause altercations between dogs. Behavior: Pay attention to the environment in the park before you take your dog inside. Be aware of other dogs behaving inappropriately or strangely. If you notice anything that seems like it could be a problem, it might be best to avoid the situation, or at least be extra aware while you are there. Also, if your dog’s behavior changes and they are displaying fearful, agitated, or even aggressive behaviors, it might be best to leave the dog park. Security: You want to make sure that all fences are secure and maintained. Also, be sure that all gates are double gated to reduce the chance of any dogs escaping. Small dog areas: If your dog is under 20 lbs. it would be wise to find a park that has a sepa-

rate small dog area. If your small pup enjoys playing with bigger dogs, that’s great! However, not all big dogs do well with little ones. Keep in mind that some dogs and breeds have a tendency for pray drive. It would be a good idea to visually survey the park for potential issues and ask owners if their dogs will be okay with your little guy present. Not all dog parks are going to meet the needs for every dog or dog owner. If you frequent one specific dog park, and consistently run into problems, it might be time for a change in routine. If you have easy access to multiple dog parks, try out a few of them at different times of the day to find the best one for your dog. It is important that we listen to our dogs. Just because a dog park seems great to us as humans doesn’t mean your dog is always going to feel the same. When you find the right one, you will know it.

What Should be in Your Dog Emergency Kit? Eric M. Cryan, D.V.M.

often think about Ben Franklin’s quote “By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.“ These words ring true when it comes to our four-legged fur kids as well, so preparing an emergency kit in advance is critical should a need arise. What to include should obviously be tailored to your situation and your dog, but here are some key essentials that should fit inside every doggie emergency bag. They are grouped into three general categories. The Basics: Just as we need food, water, and shelter during an emergency, these basic necessities cannot be overlooked for our pooch. Having enough nutrients, medications, and preventatives to last for a reasonable period of time is vital. In addition, bring a dog bed or crate so he or she can feel comfortable and/or be confined. Collapsible crates and collapsible food and water dishes are preferable to minimize space. Include a leash, collar, and dog ID tags with your equipment, as these are necessary for basic care and safety regardless of the situation. Documentation: Paperwork is generally not the first thing one thinks of in an emergency, so it can often be overlooked. Keep hard copies of all important pet information in a folder in a waterproof ziplock bag. Our practice, like many others, keeps an electronic medical record that we email clients so they can access their pet’s medical history including prior appointments, previous laboratory results, medications prescribed, and their vaccine history and reminders. I recommend printing out a hard copy of key information and keeping it in this folder so it is readily accessible during an emergency when internet and cellular service may be unreliable. A picture with your dog’s name, contact information, normal feeding schedule, and any medications they are on should also be included. In addition to your dog’s medical history, keeping contact information for your primary veterinarian, emergency veterinary hospital, Animal Poison Control

number (888-426-4435), and even prior boarding facilities or a family friend who cared for him or her is helpful in case you are unable to take your dog with you in the given situation. Having this information at hand so other people can locate it is important to ensure continuity of care for our canine companions when an emergency occurs. First Aid Kit: It is impossible for any first aid kit to treat every emergency, but here are some basics to keep at home and take with you should the need arise. As an owner of Retrievers and a veterinarian who has performed plenty of foreign body surgeries, I am acutely aware that dogs can and will eat anything. In these instances, if Animal Poison Control or your veterinarian recommends inducing vomiting, hydrogen peroxide often can be used to induce emesis. For cuts, scrapes, and punctures one should have gauze, triple antibiotic ointment, and vet wrap to cover the wound prior to seeking further medical attention. An Elizabethan collar (E-collar) to prevent self-trauma can stop a minor problem from escalating into a major

Anxiety and Veterinary Visits By Rachel Ray, Caring Hands Animal Hospital

t’s normal for pets to be anxious when they visit the vet, right? While common, it should not be accepted as a norm. Dr. Marty Becker has been an advocate and champion for “Fear Free” veterinary visits and has helped usher this new initiative into practices today. Low-stress visits are possible when you and your veterinarian work together as a team. In a Bayer Veterinary Healthcare Usage study, 37% of dog owners and 58% of cat owners said their pets hate going to the vet. They also found that 26% of dog owners and 38% of cat owners said that just thinking about going to the vet was stressful. This number can reduce or delay visits that could impact the health of a pet.

The first step in creating reduced stress for veterinary visits is to be able to recognize signs of anxiety in your pet. Pet parents and their healthcare team should be able to identify these signs to be able to cater to the pet’s emotions and provide

them with appropriate coping mechanisms. Signs of anxiety in dogs include: • Panting, whining, trembling, pacing • Shedding, self-grooming • Yawning, licking lips, drooling • Hiding, freezing, cowering • Difficulty getting pet in car Signs of anxiety in cats include: • Clinging to their pet parent • Avoiding eye contact, cowering • Hissing, growling, vocalization • Ears lower or flattened • Difficulty getting cat in carrier Now that we know what to look for, we can create environments both at home and at the animal hospital that encourage a low-stress visit. At home, get your pet used to their carrier. A lot of times pet parents only bring the carrier out when the pet is getting ready to go to the vet. The carrier then becomes an anxiety trigger for your pet. If

If this is not possible, bring the carrier out at least a few days before your scheduled appointment to allow them time to adjust to seeing it. When you are ready to put your pet in the car, cover the carrier and place it on a flat surface in the car. Remember that your pet is often not secured in the car like we are, and the movement of even the calmest car ride can make your pet feel uneasy. Food motivated pets should not be fed the meal before their scheduled appointment to encourage acceptance of treats at the vet. This can help create a bond with the veterinary staff and earn them some “brownie points” with your pet. Animal hospitals that utilize low-stress techniques will often use pheromones and specific music that is made to calm cats and dogs. Another tip is to take trips to your vet for “happy visits.” These are used to help desensitize your pet and will allow

them to interact with the veterinary staff without any poking or prodding. Your pet can receive treats and love from the staff, and then go home. This will help create a sense of trust and familiarity with the hospital. Finally, there are options using the introduction of medication to help relieve pet’s anxiety when this cannot be achieved through more natural methods. The ultimate goal is to create veterinary visits that produce the least amount of stress as possible, for all parties involved. Reactive Behaviors in Dogs By Mark McCabe

veryone tells me my dog needs more socialization, but she just keeps getting worse!

Sound familiar? One of the most common reasons for calls to a trainer and one of the two most likely to go unresolved, along with separation anxiety, is what trainers and behaviorist call reactive behavior. Dogs who intensely bark and carry on at other dogs, people, passing cars or bikes, the vacuum.....almost anything can be a focus of this kind of seriously difficult and, often, embarrassing and sometimes dangerous behavior. Reactive behavior can start in very young puppies or later in life, but very commonly in the first year of life. Reactivity is a hugely common reason for dogs to be given up by a family. It is not only common by normal for this behavior to exist in dogs who are not only friendly in many circumstances but may be intensely loving and fun

with the family and other dogs in the household, they may go to doggie daycare and may even be the most engaged and playful dog there. They may love the family cat which seeming to be on a mission from God to kill every other furry little thing on the planet. Once given up these dogs are sometimes rather quiet dogs in shelters, not necessarily showing their problem behavior. If they end up in rescue it is common for rescues to either not see the problem behavior or undersell it or even completely not mention it in their promotion of the dog. In general, rescued dogs are often rather quiet in the first few weeks they are in a new home and donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t show signs of their worst behaviors. All of this often leads to the family having just enough time to truly fall in love with their new friend before the behavior that likely put the dog into the rescue/shelter sys-

However the dog gets to the point of clearly having a significant problem with reactivity the owners get to enjoy being blamed by almost everyone for not having raised the dog right and then as they start to seek help, online or in person, they get the joy of getting caught up in the civil, or often uncivil, war in the dog training community over how to deal with dogs with problem behaviors. One group is telling them they must punish everything, the other group telling them they must punish nothing and so it goes. Both groups of trainers tend to end up largely focusing on how to control the dog one way or another without really knowing how to change the dog. The really good news is that these dogs are often not as beyond help as many believe or as the experience of many owners would demonstrate. And even better, they can be helped in ways that don’t require intense obedience training and which bring out the best in the dog, not suppress it. Methods which emphasize good safety protocols to keep the dog from getting in more trouble, teach the dog how to earn rewards for

simple, natural behaviors, teach the dog how to become calm and find comfort in calmness (much like human yoga and meditation practices) and help the dog, through calmness, to see the focus of its reactivity as something normal, safe and even good, can really change the dog’s world...and open up the world to the dog. A couple of very important things can really help the reactive dog and its family. First, get over the idea that the dog needs more “socialization”. All “socialization” means in most cases is repeatedly exposing the dog with problems to what it is already afraid of, aggressive toward or reactive toward.....in best cases with rewards being offered that the dog typically is too wound up to be able to take. Stop, right now, putting the dog in situations that drive it to exactly the behavior you are trying to change! Second, recognize that you and your dog need to learn how to communicate and change behavior in the easiest situations possible,

not the most difficult. That generally means that you’ll need to start learning how to teach the dog new behavior that doesn’t seem to have anything to do with the problem that is driving you to seek help to begin with. YOU need to learn how to teach behavior while the dog is learning from you. While almost every owner would be more than happy to never need to learn how to train their dog, it turns out that doing so can actually be really fascinating, often fun and lead to an amazing relationship with your dog AND, in many ways, take far less effort than you might think. Teaching the dog simple ideas like: all kinds of things that happen in the world around it lead to you noticing what she notices and that can lead to rewards, how to relax at times that it would normally be excited, and that being calm can feel good and lead to rewards.....are you getting a hint, rewards can be REALLY helpful in changing this type of behavior...... but you also have to learn to set limits for the dog.

Simple things like teaching the dog it can’t just run out the door or drag you around on the leash can be real cornerstones of self-control that can turn moments of explosive and uncontrolled behavior into opportunities to help the dog learn to be calm and happy at these times. If you are calm and consistent and keep the level of challenge low enough success will be easy for you and the dog. Often a simple way to do some of this work is with an internet connected TV in your living room. Go to YouTube or other sites that have video of whatever gets your dog excited. If possible, start with things that get the dog excited but are not the most exciting things to them (video of calm cats perhaps rather than starting with video of crazy squirrels for a dog that likes to chase small animals). The great thing about using an internet connected TV with good speakers (although you may be able

to do good work with just a tablet and a cheap Bluetooth speaker) is that for the first time YOU will be in control of what the dog will be exposed to. YOU can start and stop the video. YOU can control or mute the sound. YOU can make just a very brief exposure that is proceeded by teaching calmness and rewards and the low level exposure quickly leads to calmness and rewards! There are a lot of great ideas and tools that a good trainer can share with you and how to use them to help your furry friend. Don’t give up on these dogs and don’t allow your pet and your family to have your lives be one of restriction and imprisonment. The term “Holistic Medicine” doesn’t refer to any particular therapy; it is more a way of looking at the case. Holistic, in its broadest sense, means that all of the symptoms are taken into account in the case evaluation. This includes mental, physical and emotional symptoms. The entire symptom picture is recognized as inter-related, that is, the whole animal is considered. Examples of therapies that fall under the Holistic umbrella include Acupuncture, Western and Chinese Herbal Medicine, Chiropractic and Homeopathy.

In my experience all theories are just a way to explain observed phenomenon. And different approaches are not necessarily mutually exclusive. It is important to understand the strength and weakness of each approach so you can determine what the most appropriate therapy is for any given situation. Holistic Therapies tend to all have several things in common that differentiate them from conventional medical therapy. Self healing. A concept common to alternative therapies is that the individual has the ability to heal themselves and so therapy should be directed at aiding that process. Therefore the doctor does not cause the healing to occur; they only facilitate the process. The more options the doctor has available to offer the patient, the more efficient the doctor can be at affecting the curative process. Symptoms. Health is not the absence of symptoms, but the absence of disease. Many approaches view symptoms in quite a different way than we do in Western medicine. Symptoms are created by the body when it is in the process of trying to re-establish a state a health. We all recognize that a fever, for example, is a positive process when a microbial invader is present. The elevated body temperature will have a negative effect on the organism and help to activate the host immune system. A prolonged fever, however,

can create problems of its own. The conventional approach is to stop the process, that is, give a medicine to bring down the fever. This action will unfortunately shut down the healing process and prevent the individual from being able to rid itself of the pathogen. The holistic approach is to try to figure out why the body was unable to finish the healing process on its own and help it to do so. In chronic disease situations this approach can often take longer than the conventional approach, but the individual will be healthier for finishing the process on its own. It has “learned” how to effect a curative reaction from start to finish.

The therapies are therefore directed at stimulating the energy field to return to a state of balance and normal flow. In Chinese Medicine this energy is called the Qi and in Homeopathy it is called the Vital Force. Disease and health manifest on 3 levels. The energetic state manifests on the physical, mental and emotional levels; so an imbalance may manifest on any of these levels. In fact, an imbalance, or state of ill-health, does indeed manifest on all 3 levels at the same time. We may not be able to appreciate the imbalance, but it is present none the less. An imbalance in the individual may start on one level and symptoms may develop on that level or any of the others. The correct therapy may therefore be to balance an area that does not appear to be where the current problem is, but will

lead to the deepest healing result and act to prevent future problems from occurring. From this we can see why a “Holistic” approach requires obtaining information about areas that do not appear to have a direct connection with the presenting complaint; i.e. evaluating the whole patient. An example could be a tendency to stress diarrhea: treatment of a single episode would not help to prevent future episodes, but treatment of the underlying weakness will not only help this episode, but can help prevent future episodes. There are a variety of therapies available which can increase the level of health. The majority of these Holistic therapies work by stimulating the body’s own natural repair mechanisms and so tend to have a low potential for negative results. Not all patients respond and response can sometimes take a while to manifest. The many patients the symptoms are resolved and they end up much healthier.

Adopt a Rescued Dog

There are several benefits to adopting a rescued dog. Many rescued dogs are mature adults who are housebroken. Adult dogs are past the stage of chewing on your shoes and furniture. They are loyal to the hand that feeds them, shelters them, and loves them. Give a loving pet a second chance – adopt. Listed on the following pages are telephone contacts for individual dog breed rescues. If the breed you are looking for is not listed, it may be because the contact for that breed has declined to be in the book or we are not aware of them. Keep in mind when calling these contacts that in many cases you are calling someone’s home. Most of these people are volunteers who donate their time for the love of the breed. Be respectful of the hours you call. Also, be aware that it may take time to get a response to your call.

Dog Parks Continue to Grow

hese parks provide a wonderful opportunity for dogs to exercise and socialize with other canines. Some dog parks are private and for members only with fees and strict enforcement of park rules. Private parks are rare. Parks are public. They are the result of grassroots movements and rely largely on users to adhere to rules, clean up after the dogs, and keep the peace by removing aggressive animals. Without the screening required by private parks, there is no way of knowing if all public park participants are properly socialized and are current on vaccinations. Most parks operate smoothly. Some parks provide space for dogs to run off leash while others set the stage for positive interaction among pets and people. Note: Some parks may not be completely fenced. Usage may be limited to residents of the particular area.
