Pet Dominion is Working to Remain Canine Influenza Free by Hilary Hall, Pet Dominion

ou probably know that the canine influenza virus has made its way to Maryland. There were six confirmed cases in Montgomery County just last year, and sadly, two dogs died. All of us at Pet Dominion have been keeping abreast of the progression of the virus since its inception, and like you, we are staying vigilant to ensure that our patients and our lodging pets stay healthy. It’s important to know and understand the risk factors, how you can lower those for your dog, and what we’re doing to keep your pets safe here at Pet Dominion. What is the canine influenza virus (CIV)? The CIV is a highly contagious virus that is in the same family of viruses as those that cause the seasonal flu in humans. It first started appearing at greyhound racetracks in Florida in 2004. What are the symptoms? Respiratory problems such as coughing and nasal discharge, and in more severe cases, pneumonia, high fever, and difficulty breathing. What are the risk factors for my dog? Your dog is at risk if he/she comes into contact with other dogs or even places other dogs frequent. This includes everything from dog parks and neighborhood doggie play groups to grooming and lodging facilities. How can I keep my dog healthy? The canine influenza vaccine is the best way to protect your dog. Like the human flu vaccine, the CIV vaccine does not guarantee that a dog will not get the flu if exposed, but it greatly reduces the length and severity of the infection. It protects other dogs by greatly reducing viral shedding. This is why a vaccinated population is the safest social environment. Once your dog gets the first vaccine, it is very important to bring him/her back in 2-4 weeks later for the booster. Your dog will not have the maximum protection until about a week after that second vaccine.

How serious is CIV? It’s important not to panic. Like the majority of people who contract the human flu, most dogs recover with no complications. Less than 5% of dogs die from the virus. Also like the human flu, it tends to be more severe in the older and very young dogs. What is Pet Dominion doing to keep my dog safe? We are doing everything we can to keep the CIV out of our facility. Our veterinarians and veterinary technicians have been proactive in recommending the vaccine since 2009. Meanwhile on our lodging side, we have been requiring the vaccine for over a year in order to keep all dogs staying at our pet resort safe. In addition, we have been following proper cleaning procedures, educating our staff and keeping newly vaccinated dogs separate from those properly vaccinated. “We strongly advise clients lodging their dogs to have at least one week lapse after the booster before lodging,” says our Medical Director and owner Dr. Michael Bassett. Hyperthyroidism in Cats by Dr. Tina Conway, VCA Veterinary Referral Associates

ince you have picked up this magazine, there is a good chance that a cat may be part of your family. As cats age, health problems may unfortunately arise. One of the most common problems of older cats is an overactive thyroid gland, also known as hyperthyroidism, which affects about 1 out of 3 cats. Veterinarians do not know the cause of this problem, but there is a safe and simple treatment, that can cure most hyperthyroid cats. A single, painless injection of radioactiveiodine is given under the cat’s skin. The cat remains in the hospital for a few days, until their radioactivity levels are low enough to return home. The radioactive iodine collects in the thyroid gland, slowly destroying the overactive tissue.

Although treatment is available at other centers, at Veterinary Referral Associates (VRA), in Gaithersburg, MD our hyperthyroid treatment program is unique. We perform thyroid scintigraphy on each hyperthyroid cat before his or her radioactive iodine treatment. Scintigraphy allows us to 1) confirm the diagnosis since blood tests may be inaccurate, 2) determine the best dose of I-131 specific to each hyperthyroid cat, and 3) determine if thyroid cancer is present.

Dr. Conway’s special fields of interest within internal medicine include nephrology, urology, endocrinology and endoscopy.

From the Publisher Hello my fellow Pet Lovers! Every year when I write this letter I take time to reflect on the past year. It’s a great opportunity for me to think about the trends I have seen over the past year and to look ahead for what I see in the coming year. I would have to say that creativity and innovation are the two first things that come to mind. These two characteristics define so many of the great new products and services that are available for our pets and they certainly define the new age of events. New products I’ve seen recently include feeding tools, that slow down our pets to aid digestion while others encourage our pets to engage their brains to retrieve their treats. I have also seen some amazingly creative toys that take training and play to whole new levels. I have learned about engaging dog services where your dog can go to the beach for a day, go to the mountains, enjoy running and playing with other dogs and animals on a farm, have a night at a B&B and of course can enjoy the day (or a luxurious overnight in a suite complete with a TV) at a spa and hotel for pets only. There have been incredible advances in veterinary medicine, as well as increased availability of holistic medicine such as massage and accupuncture and veterinary orthodics. We have also seen the opening of the area’s first all-inclusive vet, specialty medicine and 24/7 emergency care center. And most recently I have seen some of the most creative events and fundraisers. For a number of years we have been able to take pets to locations such as sporting events, the pet store for supplies, and fairground style events that feature auctions, raffles and contests. We have also seen some of our pets welcomed to convention centers, black tie galas, public swimming pools and wineries. Now this year we are seeing the bar raised to a whole new level of creativity. I have seen everything from a Barktoberfest (a dog-friendly Oktoberfest) to a Burlesque show, to a fashion show and a vegan cooking event.

There are so many creative ways to engage with our pets. I am heartened that we have entered a new age where pets are enjoying the wonderful life they truly deserve. I love that I have been seeing so much growth in events and in rescue organizations. It seems I learn about a new one in the DC area each month. That means that more and more people are getting involved in helping animals and that results in more animals living happier lives. The mission of Pet Lovers Companion and our sister publication NOVADog Magazine is to improve the lives of pets through education, inspiration and collaboration. We work with pet organizations of every shape and size and work hard to foster a sense of community. Please join us this year and take an active role. Come to an event, forward an article to a friend, volunteer at a shelter or maybe adopt a pet. Bunnies and Hamsters and Chinchillas! Oh My! by Lisa Carroll, The Big Bad Woof

merica is a country of animal lovers. Large or small, fins or paws, furry or scaly we love our animal friends. Small animals and “pocket pets” make up a large portion of the American pet population, and they can make great pets for the right home. Here’s a look at some of their nutritional needs. Rabbits are herbivores, meaning their diet is exclusively vegetarian. They require pellets made up of at least 15-19% protein and 18% fiber. Try to avoid pellets with additional dyes or nuts, and they should have a daily allowance of dark leafy greens with a small amount of fruits and other vegetables for treats. The most important part of a rabbit’s diet is hay. Hay is the key to a rabbits tooth and digestive health.

Pocket pets make up a large portion of the American pet population

Guinea Pigs are also herbivores and require a quality pellet, avoiding additional food coloring. Like rabbits, they’ll need hay and fresh water at all times, as well as a source of Vitamin C, which can be obtained from fruits vegetables or supplements. Vitamin C deficiency is one of the most common guinea pig ailments so they will need a daily supply. Hamsters and Gerbils are herbivores too. A food with a mix of grains seeds corn and pellets is best for hamsters, and a small amount of fresh fruits vegetables and alfalfa pellets make good treats. Gerbils should have a gerbil seed mix with a protein content of approximately 12% and a fat content around 6-8%. The ASPCA suggests giving your hammys or gerbils fresh foods like grains sunflower seeds (unsalted) and nuts every couple days, but be careful

because nuts have what would be considered a high fat content for these little guys. Chinchillas are herbivores with sensitive digestive systems. It’s recommended that they receive a pellet specifically for chinchillas, avoiding added nuts corn seeds and fruit. They also require a large amount of roughage so they will need unlimited access to hay. Mice do well on pellets or food blocks with at least 16% protein, 18% fiber, and no more than 4% fat. Small amounts of fresh fruits and vegetables will make good treats. Rats are omnivores and you’ll want to look for a pellet with a good balance of protein, fat, carbs, and minerals, with vegetables in moderation. If you decide a small animal is the right pet for you please do research before bringing

one home. Each species has specific care and dietary needs, and there are foods that can be harmful to them. Your local shelter or rescue can provide additional information about small animal care, and there will be animals inside the facility that you can interact with. Your local pet supply store can also be a good information source, so think local first and don’t be afraid to ask for help when shopping for your new small animal friend.

The Importance of Blood Transfusions in Veterinary Medicine by Lauren M. DiVanna, DVM, Dogs and Cats Veterinary Referral

nemia is a common, and sometimes life-threatening, problem in veterinary medicine. There are varying degrees of anemia and the severity of the anemia indicates a potential need for a blood transfusion. Aside from anemia, there are other disease processes that require transfusions of different types of blood products. Currently, there are very few veterinary blood banks available for hospitals to purchase whole blood and/or blood products. All blood banks also have their own blood donor program and own specific pool of animals to obtain healthy blood from, but our hospital, Dogs and Cats Veterinary Referral, has developed itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s own blood donor program to include both dogs and cats. Our blood donor program has been established by following standards and recommendations set by the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM) consensus statement. Having an animal that is a blood donor is a huge commitment as blood donation is a very involved procedure, as you will learn here.

When an animal is assessed as needing a blood transfusion, the first step is to evaluate what type of blood product is indicated. One of the significant benefits of a blood bank is that they are able to produce multiple variations of products for diseases besides anemia. In our hospital, we are able to keep some different products in our inventory, such as fresh frozen plasma, cryoprecipitate and immunoglobulins. These products are portions of whole blood but require very specific technical skills and instruments to create. In fact, it is not plausible for our hospital to obtain these instruments or use our resources to obtain the technical skills; we are fortunate to have a blood bank locally to rely on for these specialty products. When an animal presents with the primary problem of anemia, it is unlikely that a specialty product is warranted. After initial assessment, the veterinarian decides if and what type of a blood transfusion is needed. Often times, whole blood is a reasonable choice as the product to infuse, which

is when we may call on an animal blood donor.

during the transfusion, enforcing the fact that the transfusion was needed and in an urgent fashion. Animals that receive transfusion are typically hospitalized for multiple days in our ICU to treat their underlying disease.

Our blood donors make up a pool of young, healthy animals that have been screened by our hospital for any underlying diseases identifiable on blood work as well as blood borne infections. ow many of you have taken a whiff of your dog or cat’s breath and were surprised at how bad it smelled? How many of you chalked it up to just being “dog breath” or “fish breath”? Well, our pets are not supposed to have breath odor, just like we aren’t! Bad breath can signal a variety of oral symptoms from simple food residue to more serious mouth cancer. Dogs and cats develop plaque which leads to tartar. Many times, you cannot see the plaque but you can begin to smell the bad breath odor that accompanies it. Then tartar begins to form, usually on the rear

molars and upper canine teeth first. This looks like a yellowish deposit. At this stage, the gums will look normal. If the teeth are not cleaned, the tartar will usually thicken and become worse and then the gums may become infected. This signals the early stage of periodontal disease. In advanced periodontal gum disease, the teeth will be so diseased that they cannot be saved and must be extracted or even fall out on their own. You can imagine what kind of mouth pain this puts your pet in. Once dogs lose their canine teeth, their tongues have a tendency to hang out of their mouths.

abies infections in people are rare in the United States. However, nationally, there are about 7,000 rabies cases each year in animals, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Though rabies is lethal, the good news is that it’s preventable.

Passed to a person through an infected animal’s saliva by licking, scratching, or biting, the rabies virus can leave some animals entirely symptom free. This is contrary to the stereotype of an animal that is acting sick or foaming at the mouth, so it is important to be cautious around any unknown animal, whether wild or domestic. In addition to taking precautions, the single best way to protect your pet and your family from rabies is to have your cat, dog, or ferret vaccinated and to ensure that the vaccine is up to date. Animals must be at least three months of age or older to be vaccinated. Some other ways to protect yourself, your pets and your family from rabies are: • Confine your pets. Keep your pets confined to your home or yard and walk them on a leash.

• Do not encourage wild animals to be near or in your house. Skunks, foxes, bats, groundhogs, and raccoons are key rabies carriers. Feed pets inside the house. Keep garbage in tightly-closed trash cans. Cap chimneys and seal off any openings in attics, under porches, in basements and in outbuildings. • Do not attempt to keep wild animals as pets. Even a baby skunk or raccoon born in captivity can carry rabies. Don’t use bare hands to pick up or touch an animal. If you have to touch a dead animal,

ets have teeth too and since it can be challenging to brush their teeth daily many pets suffer from dental disease. By three years of age 85% of pets have some form of periodontal disease. That “doggy” and “kitty” breath isn’t normal, it’s a sign of dental disease. Take a look in your pet’s mouth, do you see redness on the gums, brown build-up of calculus, bleeding? Those are signs that something isn’t right in his mouth. It can be hard to tell that our pets are in pain from their teeth because they hide it well. An oral health exam is part of their annual checkup. Often it is hard to do a full assessment because they don’t understand how to say “AHHHH”. A dental for your pet is very similar to what we humans get, except they do need to be

asleep. Sedation not only makes it easier for us to fully examine their mouth but it is also safer because it protects their airways and prevents pieces of calculus that get removed from being inhaled into their lungs. When your pet comes in for a dental visible tartar is first removed, then a special tool is used to safely remove tartar from under the gum line. The gums are checked for pockets surrounding the teeth (a sign of more significant disease), the teeth are then polished and treated with fluoride. Many times the roots are diseased with no sign on the crowns. Dental x-rays allow us to look for this very painful problem and treat accordingly. With routine dental care your pet can have a healthier mouth and a longer lifespan.

What is a Veterinary Surgeon? by Briana Danielson, DVM, Hope Advance Veterinary Center

ost people are aware that veterinarians perform surgery. Did you know that there are veterinarians that specialize in surgery only?

A veterinary surgeon is a veterinarian that has undergone specialized training in the area of surgery in addition to veterinary school. The training begins with a year of a rotating internship which allows a veterinarian to study and gain additional experience in some of the many of the subspecialties of veterinary medicine. Once completed, the veterinarian then has an opportunity to apply to a residency program. The residency to become a veterinary surgeon is three years long and competition for slots is tough. During the residency, skills in both orthopedic and soft tissue surgery are

honed. Residency can be completed within an academic institution or in a private practice setting, typically in large referral centers. A referral center is a hospital in which a group of specialists works together. The Hope Center in Rockville is an example of a referral center. In our hospital, we have cardiologists, internal medicine specialists, neurologists, and surgeons. During residency, a surgery resident must perform, write, and publish a scientific paper. Once the residency is completed and the scientific paper is approved for publication, the surgeon can then take board certification. Board certification is essentially a large test broken up into multiple pieces to test the surgeonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s knowledge. This test is only offered once a year. In between finishing a residency

Adopt a Rescued Dog

There are several benefits to adopting a rescued dog. Many rescued dogs are mature adults who are housebroken. Adult dogs are past the stage of chewing on your shoes and furniture. They are loyal to the hand that feeds them, shelters them, and loves them. Give a loving pet a second chance – Adopt. Listed on the following pages are telephone contacts for individual dog breed rescues. If the breed you are looking for is not listed, it may be because the contact for that breed has declined to be in the book or we are not aware of them. Keep in mind when calling these contacts that in many cases you are calling someone’s home. Most of these people are volunteers who donate their time for the love of the breed. Be respectful of the hours you call. Also, be aware that it may take time to get a response to your call.

Dog Parks Continue to Grow

hese parks provide a wonderful opportunity for dogs to exercise and socialize with T other canines. Some dog parks are private and for members only with fees and strict enforcement of park rules. Private parks are rare. Most are the result of grassroots move-

ments and rely largely on users to adhere to rules, clean up after the dogs, and keep the peace by removing aggressive animals. Without the screening required by private parks, there is no way of knowing if all park participants are properly socialized and are current on vaccinations. Most parks operate smoothly. Some parks provide space for dogs to run off leash while others set the stage for positive interaction among pets and people. Note: Some parks may not be completely fenced. Usage may be limited to residents of the particular area.
