ROGUES GALLERY 134 E Juneau Ave

Written by: Royal Griggs “Rogues is a little bit everything. And the stuff I’m into, like the raw brick and metal decor. We cater to everybody, having DJs who spin everything, but the music mostly tends to be classic rock and classic hip-hop. And we have to play that LMFAO song, of course,” says owner Nate Showers. Rogues was built around the lights hanging over the bar, which Showers says he ordered online from “a kid in Iowa” who works out of his home. Showers and a friend hung the lights from a heavy-duty pipe that he now says was a bit of overkill. “Just too much fun with a plasma torch,” he says. The bar is a rich, dark wood lined with chairs by Flux Design. The wood floor and accents around the exposed brick still smell pleasantly of varnish. “Everybody keeps telling me that. It must be the wood cleaning products I use,” says Showers. The concept for Rogues Gallery came from one of Showers’ 10 notebooks that he filled with bar ideas and possible names over the years. “With Rogues, I envisioned a crew of the ‘usual suspects,’ my people drinking at the bar when I come in,” says Showers.

6

The gallery part grew out of a combination of Showers’ appreciation and the space itself, which seemed naturally suited. Showers had been involved in monthly art shows at Jackalope Lounj and had always liked art. “I have some pieces in here now that were done just with spray paint and some stencils. It blows my mind that people can be that creative,” says Showers. Monday nights is Bangarang at Rogues Gallery, a service industry party formerly housed at Jackalope, hosted by DJ E.Rich and another local guest DJ and when everything is half off. The first Saturday of each month Rogues hosts DJ Why B’s alter ego “Rick Jameson Experience,” when a live artist shares the stage with “Rick Jameson,” two local DJs and one from Chicago. The current plan is for the art to be changed monthly. Rogues hours are limited until the patio season, which Showers expects will come – or he’ll make happen – in April. Showers says the patio will be open for St. Patrick’s Day, but full bar service won’t happen until the following month. “When summer hits, we’ll be here seven days a week, probably opening at noon Saturday and Sunday and 5 p.m. weekdays,” he says.

Most commonly described as the delicious taste of “milk left over from Cinnamon Toast Crunch cereal” has taken the cake for best shot. The recent Rum Chata phenomenon has taken over as a buzzworthy booze. Think of it as an updated White Russian, but with a great delicious cinnamon flavor. What is Rum Chata? It’s a Horchata plus rum. The familiar Mexican Horchata is a “rice water” made from rice and sugar and is different than the Horchata made from a Chufa nut. Rum Chata is a delicious rum cream with rice, sugar, vanilla, and cinnamon. Check out these super tasty recipes and as a taste test, take a shot. You’ll have new best friends in no time if you share a bottle at your next party.

Girl Scout Cookie (Thin Mint)

The Nomad World Pub

OnMilwaukee

1401 E. BRADY ST., (414) 224-8111 AUTHORED BY:

Staff Writers

The Brady Street area is known second only to Water Street by out-of-towners looking to experience true Milwaukee. To many locals, however, Brady Street is where you can find what the heart of the city is all about. There are the traditions that have become ingrained over time, such as the Wolski’s bumper stickers at closing time, and the everyman elegance of the Hi-Hat Lounge. One of the best traditions, however, is when the World Cup is being played.

If you’ve gone anywhere on Brady Street, it’s most likely been to the Hi-Hat. This bar aims to please any time of day with their Lounge & Garage. Go for the food, stay for the drinks. At night the garage transforms into an upbeat spot with a young nightlife crowd where you can get a $5 mystery liter of beer. Or, head downstairs to the lounge for a calmer late night crowd that sips on martinis. Either way, Hi-Hat is a well rounded Brady Street destination.

It was a close race this year, but the Safe House has stolen Water Street’s top bar cred from longstanding champ Trinity Three Irish Pubs. This not-so-secret Milwaukee watering hole has been serving cold beer, strong mixers and clandestine concoctions like the famous Spy’s Demise in its tucked-away corner off Front Street for generations. Situated just off Water Street, the Safe House has welcomed friendly agents from all corners of the world, including a number of famous faces – many of whom graciously left celebrity mementos.

And they are only a portion of the nearly 150 beers that grace the menu. Add a sea of spirits, including nearly 90 whiskeys and Rumpus Room has more than enough to make any gastropub goer’s glass happy. Add executive chef Andrew Ruiz and general manager and Milwaukee mainstay Omar Andrietsch to the mix and you have a newcomer pick that’s more than worthy.

Tiki drinks are available any night of the week including the famous Mai-Tai along with the Bora Bora Headhunter, Blue Hawaiian, Cuba Viva, Curse of Ku, El Diablo, Dark and Stormy, Floridita Daiquiri, Lemon Grass Shack and more.

Staff Writers

Our readers picked The Hotel Foster as the best East Side/UWM bar for 2012. You also said it has the best decor and is the best new bar in Milwaukee. The Hotel Foster is located in the space that once housed Live on North, Lava Bar and Grill, The Globe and The Boardwalk, but the latest reinvention of the space is the most stunning to date. The pre-Prohibition decor features antique furniture, chandeliers and stained glass. In addition to serving wine, beer and cocktails, The Hotel Foster – which does NOT rent rooms, folks – dishes up live music, too. Perhaps because it is in our own neighborhood and literally across the street from our offices, Von Trier gets our staff’s nod because of the eclectic beer selection and wonderful outdoor patio in the summertime.

It may not be the most hopping place on a Saturday night on North Ave, but it’s perfect for a relaxed seat where you can hear each other talk and still be in the middle of all the nightlife. We find more than a little irony in the fact that Bryant’s Cocktail Lounge, 1579 S. 9th St., took the readers’ choice for most eclectic drink menu. It’s not that we, too, don’t love Bryant’s – in fact, it’s one of our favorite bars in Milwaukee. But technically speaking, Bryant’s doesn’t even have a menu. Instead, you pick your drink based on flavor or color. What that means is the Bryant’s “menu” is gigantic, only limited by what’s in the creative minds of its old-school bartenders (technically, its website lists that number at 450 drinks).

722 N. MILWAUKEE ST., (414) 220-9411

This Milwaukee bar is great for networking around town as a trendy hotspot for an after work drink. The bar takes up half the space, which is a long narrow building that’s retained that old cream city brick and is wedged between two other Milwaukee street hot spots. The food menu is small but audacious, and it has a large cocktail menu that serves a mean martini alongside artisan cocktails.

Can I have your phone number? I seem to have lost mine.

Can I buy you a drink or do you just want the money?

Hey, what’s up? Guess what? It’s your lucky day. Out of everyone here, I picked you to talk to.

What’s in a name? When it comes to bars, a lot. My Office, 763 N. Milwaukee St., doesn’t really fit in with its swankier neighbors, but does just fine as it is, thanks to good service, inexpensive drinks and ... a catchy name. The bar itself has an eclectic crowd because of its location right in the middle of downtown, bringing in suits from the office to construction workers from the street. Either way, the daily grind brings in those thirsty workers that just need to get out of “the office.”

We honestly have never been to Doodle Annie’s, 3631 S. Clement Ave. We just picked it because of its awesome name, and we imagine kids coloring with crayons on tablecloths, instead of drinking and shots and affordable beer. The latter is probably closer to the truth.

County Clare boasts of pouring the most stout in the state of Wisconsin, which isn’t surprising but some bar patrons of the comfortable pub may not even spare a thought for the other part of County Clare’s business, a hotel with more than two dozen guest suites. But OnMilwaukee.com readers know all about it and made the cozy public house at 1234 N. Astor St. the easy winner as best hotel bar for yet another year.

And since it’s located inside a hotel, there are shuttle services provided to most downtown events free of charge. Park in the complimentary lot, grab a drink at Envoy, and off you go! Envoy lounge provides a more casual atmosphere opposed to the swanky hotel and fine dining.

The combination of alcohol and games is a match made in bar heaven. Not only do bar games provide plenty of fun for a group out on the town, adding a little liquor to the mix seems to make every pool shot line up perfectly and every dart fly straight (at least for a little while, anyway). It’s no surprise, then, that the East Side’s Landmark Lanes was voted tops this year. As much a bar game playground as a bar, Landmark Lanes boasts 40 arcade and video games, foosball, darts, weekly pool tournaments and a 16-lane bowling alley.

THE STANDARD 1754 N Franklin Pl

Written by: Molly Snyder Steve Gilbertson has a very specific vision for The Standard, the corner bar that he co-owns with Jay Stamates. “I want it to be like walking into a bar in the ‘50s that hasn’t been redone, just added to, since the ‘20s,” says Gilbertson. The building was built in 1888 and has always housed a bar, making The Standard one of the city’s oldest. Gilbertson has an invoice from 1906 for two half-barrels of Pabst delivered to the bar in 1906 for $6.50. More than 100 years later, the space definitely maintains a classic look and feel, from the dark wood bar to the stained glass windows to the sink outside the restroom. Plus, black-and-white photos on the walls, Monopoly money decoratively scattered under glass atop one of the tables, a steady stream of big band swing music and murals of Bettie Page, James Dean, Louise Brooks and a young Marlo Brando in the restrooms add to the vintage theme.

42

However, The Standard is not gimmicky. It’s comfortable and cozy, illuminated at night by amber and candle light. Large Pabst and Standard Oil murals, painted by local artist Holly Messer, are a stand-out feature. The Standard has 100 different beers available in cans and bottles. Soon, it will have six to eight taps, too. Gilbertson, a former home brewer, says he’s always been a “geek about beer.” He believes beer drinkers need a large selection to choose from because drinking beer should be about what you’re in the mood for, not an opportunity to drink the same beer night after night. The Standard will soon offer pizza, chicken fingers and other classic bar fare. Keeping prices low is important to Gilbertson. The Standard offers $2.50 shots of Powers and has nightly specials along with a daily happy hour with half-off domestics and rails. “We’re also offering an alternative to Brady Street,” says Gilbertson. “There’s a mellow vibe in here even when it’s full.”

Use it to chill new wine, or for an added punch in your next mixed cocktail. They are even great to cook with, just pop a few in your next sauce and see what happens!

Shaken and poured over ice.
