LETS MAKE A DRINK FOR...

THE BEST PLACE

On of the most relaxing bars in Milwaukee to kick back in. This summer, discover new ways to get around Milwaukee outside of your car. Baseball time is here and Milwaukee knows how to make the best of it.

Milwaukee is a melting pot of cultures and we encourage you to try out the less beaten paths where english is a second language. Elegance in the decor and in your cup, hotel bars that are sure to inspire. DIY drinks inspired by 2 of this summers biggest buzzworthy topics.

DEAR READERS, We’re holding onto summer as much as we can this year. When asking people their favorite thing about Milwaukee, everyone almost always replies “the Summer!” as they go on to enthusiastically list the festivals, events & favorite patio spots. Since our winter is so long, and Spring doesn’t exist here in WI (you wake up one day in late June to suddenly Summer), we really take advantage of these short sun drenched days. Even if it is 90° in your apartment, no AC, just a fan and that cold beer keeping you cool, you don’t care, because you know it’ll be missed once it’s gone. Other cities don’t really appreciate these months as much as us Wisconsinites, and no one can shake a stick at our many outdoor festivals & music concerts. So if you haven’t yet, get out, enjoy the sunshine, grab a frosty brew & enjoy what Milwaukee has to offer. Hey-if you dare, you can take up sailing on Michigan lake or rent a boat & bar hop down the river, join a sand volleyball league, or just enjoy dinner outside. It’s been a busy couple of months for us at Two Cents & we are excited to give you our 6th issue! We’re always looking for new ways to get involved in MKE & bring new talent on board, so feel free to tweet our way or send us an e-mail if you have an idea for an article, fashion spread or just want to get involved! Thanks for reading MKE! Stay up to date on our new findings & hang out spots as we discover & share them on Facebook.

My visit to Best Place @ The Historic Pabst Brewery can best be summed up in one word – PASSION!

were the first to send beer over long distances by railroad using their new ideas of icehouses.

This passion began with Jacob Best, founder of the brewery in 1844, and continued with his son, Phillip, and son-in-law, Frederick Pabst as they grew the brewery into the largest brewery in the country (a title held until 1946).

These men were literally trailblazers for all the other brewers in the area from Miller to Schlitz to Blatz and beyond. For these other brewers it was a case of follow or be left behind.

The passion of Phillip Best and Frederick Pabst allowed them to be forward thinking innovators in the business. For example, they

10

This tradition of trailblazing continues with the current occupant of Best Place. In 1996, the former juggernaut closed its doors, opening up a once in a lifetime opportunity for Jim Haertel - Marquette MBA graduate,

history lover, and Pabst aficionado. His battle for the property that is now Best Place was hard fought for years; twists and turns abounding; as epic as the property’s beginning; finally culminating in an accepted offer on, of all days, 11 September 2001. And the rest, as they say, is history. Between the accepted offer and today, renovations began to restore the building to its original glory. Much of the hall is original, from the handpainted murals to the tables to the massive roof beams, which only adds to the majesty of this place.

You will Need:

• Jar with lid • Bottle of vodka or gin • Fresh fruit, spices or herbs of your choosing!

Directions:

1. PICK YOUR VICE & SPICE. Try Lavender with gin, or maybe Basil with vodka for an interesting take on a bloody mary? Perhaps a pepper or two or go sweet with fresh fruit!

In May 2011, Best Place celebrated one year of serving the public once again through music, community, history, and of course ice cold PBR. And they will only increase in size and popularity as more and more people hear about this amazing historic gem and the amazing people that made it possible. If you would like to know more about Best Place, take a tour for yourself. Tours run every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at 1pm and 3pm. Cost is $7. A piece of Pabst history and a complementary PBR are included. So, come, learn, drink, and stay awhile in the historic main hall or beautiful beer garden.

2. PREPARE. If you’re going with fresh herbs, feel free to just stick the actual leaves or stems right in the jar. You can also choose to crush them to speed up the process. It doesn’t take much to make the flavor strong with herbs-they pack a punch. For fruit, slice them up & place in jar. Berries can stay whole. And the more the merrier! Then add your booze to the jars & close it up. Keep out of sunny windows & hot spots. 3. WAIT FOR IT..... Takes about 2 days or more depending on how strong your spice is. Fruit will take a little longertry a week. It will be trial and error to find the right infusion times. If you were impatient, just cap the lid & wait a little longer. But hey if you waited & it’s too strong, you can always water it down with more booze. Enjoy!

Lest ye think the only thing to do along Lake Michigan is cruise Lincoln Memorial Drive, here are three interesting ways to take in one of Milwaukee’s most precious assets. :

WHIRLWIND BIKE TRIPS & RENTALS 2410 N Murray Ave, 414.967.9446 www.Corythebikefixer.com

12

Milwaukee is one of the best cities for biking. Whether you bike for fun, commute to work, or like to compete, Milwaukee is becoming more and more accessible to the bike-minded. There are miles and miles of paved and off-road trails throughout the city and the state – 55 miles of bike lanes, 50 miles of bike paths, and 100 miles of street routes in the city alone. One of the best is the Lakefront Oak Leaf Trail, a 40 mile round trip route starting in Glendale and ending in South Milwaukee, along the way taking in the Milwaukee Art Museum and the Lakefront. And, if you don’t own your own gear, there are many places, like Whirlwind Bike Trips & Rentals, to rent bikes and plan tours.

MILWAUKEE BOAT LINE - IROQUOIS & VOYAGEUR CRUISE VESSELS

SEGWAY OF WI (@DISCOVERY WORLD)

101 West Michigan St, 414.294.9450 www.Mkeboat.com

500 North Harbor Drive

One of the best ways to enjoy the water is to actually get out on it. The many boat rental and tour companies in the city offer many ways to experience both the Milwaukee River and Lake Michigan. For example, Milwaukee Boat Lines offers party cruises, lunch and dinner cruises, concert cruises, school tours, and historic tours on the Iroquois built in 1922. So, whether you want to commemorate an occasion or discover great things about your city, consider a boat tour. One of the most interesting ways I found to discover the Lakefront is on one of those odd two wheel vehicles called a Segway. Besides the novelty factor, using a Segway to tour the city really makes sense. You are close to the areas you are touring, you are going slow enough to enjoy the environment, and yet fast and comfortable enough to go further than touring by foot. There are three levels of touring available. The first is simply a how-to of Segway riding and safety lasting 30 minutes. The second is a two mile tour of Lakeshore State Park lasting 45 minutes after a 30 minute training session. The third is a five mile tour of Veterans Park lasting 105 minutes after a 30 minute training session. Both the Lakeshore and Veterans tours include a knowledgeable tour guide to enlighten you to the greatness of Milwaukee. So what are you waiting for? Stop with the awkward transitions from place to place and Segway your way to a better understanding of your city.

While the Brewers may not be the best team in Major League Baseball, our ballpark experience shines as bright as the park’s lights on a warm summer night. Besides the obvious, Miller Park has a multitude of offerings that are uniquely Milwaukee.

14

A typical Milwaukee game day is spent out in the parking lot grilling out for hours beforehand, tossing bean bags, drinking as much beer as humanly possible, and going in to do it all again. When arriving in the parking lot, you almost feel as if you’ve discovered a little known

secret, since Miller Park is situated in the center of an industrial area. And if you’re lucky, you can even find a free parking area nearby – but I didn’t tell you that. Everyone has a one-track mind upon entering the gates, and that track is food. Miller Park has a ton of great options, including this season’s new Poutine – French fries, cheese curds, and gravy - only available on the 100 seating level, besides normal offerings of brats, burgers, pizza, and nachos. For a long while, PBR was only available at specific concession

stands, but no worries – it’s now much more widely available, with a 24 ounce glass running fans $10. The Milwaukee Brewers love their fans almost as much as their fans love the team, and are always giving back in the form of crowd giveaways, themed nights, and special events. Themed nights at the park are few and far between, but promotions like the past Singles Night and Stitch ‘n Pitch Night (June 21st), there is truly something for everybody - even knitters.

Think you need to get a passport, book a flight, and buy that instant translator app to experience a different culture or brush up on that foreign language? Think again. Forget the passport and airfare, but don’t forget that translator. There are plenty of places in our very own city that whisk you away to a different culture, where English is unnecessary and new experiences abound. So get out and explore for a weekend. Save your pocketbook some serious damage, especially with airfare on the rise (what’s with all the extra fees?!?), and enjoy the cultural diversity right here! Were you thinking of planning a trip to Mexico? Ok, there’s no beach on the near south side to rival Cabo or

Cancun, but you’re sure to get a more authentic cultural experience than any resort can offer. If you’re looking for a chance to brush up on your rusty high school or college Spanish, why not check out one of the amazing Mexican restaurants on Lincoln Avenue? For a culinary experience you’ll never forget, try La Canoa (1520 W. Lincoln Ave.) during a big fútbol game or on Sundays for some live mariachi fun. They take requests, so be sure to come with your favorite Mexican ballad in mind. The food is delicious! Their specialty is seafood, and there’s no lack of spice. To be extra authentic, opt for the corn tortillas when they ask. And to drink? Any Mexican import beer… or, of course, tequila! For a night of dancing, minus the English small-talk, hit up

Salsa Saturdays at Wherehouse (818 S. Water St.). You can get your free lesson at 9 p.m. and be ready to test out your new moves all night long! There are plenty of Latin heartthrobs and beauties to fill your dance card and help you practice flirting in Spanish. It’s not Mexico, but it is fun… and it’s right here in Milwaukee! For something a little more offthe-beaten-path, why not spend a Sunday immersed in Serbian culture? Chances are you’ve never been inside of one of Milwaukee’s most beautiful churches. Attend the Sunday, 10:30 a.m. church service at St. Sava Serbian Orthodox Church (3201 S. 51st St.) to be instantly transported to another culture. The service is in Serbian, the conversations are in Serbian, the church is amazing, and you’ll feel like you just stepped off the plane in Belgrade. While there, check out the schedule for one of the Serbian folk dance performances or when to watch the United Serbian Soccer Club take the field. There’s plenty going on in this cultural community! For a late lunch after church, head to Three Brothers (2414 S. Saint Clair St.) after 4 p.m. This little (and I mean little) gem packs a cultural, as well as, culinary punch. There aren’t many tables, but the food is delicious, and you’ll get a chance to test out that translator when the owner Branko comes around to introduce himself. While there, imagine a little Serbian baba cooking in the kitchen. Try the Serbian salad, a combination of tomato and an amazingly sharp Serbian cheese (a traditional dish) and, of course, the

burek or lamb… and don’t forget the šljivovic! This plum brandy is a must for any Serbian celebration, or heck, even just for dinner. Živeli! For a taste of the Middle East, and to test out your Farsi, spend an afternoon tasting Persian cuisine at Shiraz Persian Grill (2921 N. Oakland Ave.). Try one of the delicious kabob or stew plates, and when you fall in love with the flavors of Iran, just walk across the street to the Shiraz Persian Market (2864 N. Oakland Ave.). You’ll surely find the owner of both businesses hard at work. Get out that translator app and strike up a conversation. Ask how to make that delicious falafel from the Persian Grill, and get all the ingredients right there to recreate the dish at home. For a fun addition to your Iranian afternoon in Milwaukee, check out the hookahs and tobacco at the market. This tradition is a must! If you’re not looking to buy your own, you can always partake at Casablanca (728 E. Brady St.). They have a large selection of hookah tobacco and an exotic ambience to enjoy the tradition. You may even find yourself entertained by a belly dancer! Order in Farsi to really impress the staff and owner. The point is to get out an explore the cultural diversity in your own city. If you know a language or want to learn, there are endless opportunities to experience a new culture and language in Milwaukee. You just need to get out an explore. Find a cultural community center to get a listing of upcoming events. Or venture into

a new neighborhood to experience authentic cuisine from all over the world. These places are sometimes off-the-beaten-path and sometimes right under your nose. You may pass a cultural gem like Shiraz everyday without stopping in. So forget the plane, and spend the money you saved on that expensive vacation experiencing all the cultural diversity Milwaukee has to offer. Just don’t forget that pocket translator!

One of the newest establishments to come to North Ave is Hotel Foster. Formerly in the Live space, the new owners transformed it into a classier joint. It’s got the feel of a vintage thrift store but organized with a bit of color coordination. The back lounge area has some pretty sweet white chases & high back chairs, however a book case has an array of odds & ends as decoration that you’ll find peeking

at trying to figure out what the objects may be. Older paintings cover the walls of portraits & landscapes and crystal chandeliers hang above the bar, not any two the same. The drink menu is stylized as an old crumbled paper with classic cocktail names inked across it. And to my excitement they do serve one of my favorite drinks: Moscow Mule (Ginger Beer is delicious!) alongside many other depression era cocktails. A nice change from the usual collegeattending bars on North Ave,

and one that hipsters feel more at home at, I’m not a hundred percent in convinced. I still feel from the crowd that it’s just another typical North Avenue bar. But hey, that might be from precontrived opinions left over from the previous occupants & their crowds. Hotel Foster is still one of my top picks & they definitely did wonders on the decor. A good place to go to switch up the vibe while bar hopping or for a more relaxed atmosphere on such a busy strip.

A DRINK FOR CHARLIE SHEEN:

A DRINK FOR HARRY POTTER:

TIGER BLOOD GIMLET Our pal Charlie doesn’t drink just any ol’ gimlet, he likes the best and in this quick drink recipe we can fuel our Gin with Tiger Blood! GINNING!

FOR THIS DRINK YOU WILL NEED: • 1 Blood Orange (in place of actual tiger blood) • 1 Lime • Your favorite type of Gin (or Vodka) To start, cut the blood orange and lime in half and juice into a shaker with Ice. Then add 1 drinks worth of gin. Seal the top of the shaker with ingredients and swirl rather than shake. If you shake the gin it will bruise and affect the flavor, so be sure to treat it well. Finally sugar the rim of the serving glass before pouring and enjoy. Careful this drink is quite the boost!

1) You will need: Mentos, Ice Tray, Coke, Booze to mix in and a gullable friend. 2) Put 1 Mentos in each divit in the ice tray. Fill with water and freeze. 3) Make drink for gullable friend with sabbotaged Ice and wait for the hilarity to ensue.

FLAMING BUTTERBEER

With the close of the Harry Potter series, you are either celebrating the conclusion or praising the demise of the franchise. Eitherway, here’s a great recipe that will help you do both!

FOR THIS DRINK YOU WILL NEED: • • • •

Butterscotch Schnapps Bacardi 151 Fire Cheap Terrible Beer

Start with a shot glass filled 2/3rds full with Butterscotch Schnapps. Then fill a pint glass 1/2 full of any cheap terrible beer (or tap beer). Next top the shot glass with Bacardi 151 or any high alcohol content liquor and light on fire (be careful not to spill). Then drop your flaming shot into the beer and CHUG! Oh Snape! That’s Good! Careful not to drink too many of these Goblets of Fire or else you just might turn into a Horcrux!
