we approach the end of 2014, Christmas is well and truly upon us and I’m sure you will all be looking forward to the sales opportunities the festive season brings. On high streets in towns and cities up and down the country shoppers are already out in force in search of the perfect Christmas gift or that last little stocking filler for a friend or loved one. At such a competitive time of the year the experience a customer has with your business can be the difference between making that sale and watching the customer leave empty handed. With this in mind, we look at the importance of customer service and how you can maximise your business by investing in your staff and taking advantage of the seasonal opportunities. With 2015 also just around the corner, many of you will be taking the time to assess the past 12 months and will be looking forward to the challenges that lie ahead in the coming year. If you are considering a fresh approach for the new year, you might be interested in our feature with C.A.S Marketing about the importance of branding. Creating a brand can not only help you stand out from the competition but it can also go a long way towards helping you build lasting relationships with your customers. To help you do this, C.A.S reveal their five top tips for creating a brand. Of course, one of the big talking points over the past couple of months has been the inaugural Trade Days exhibition, which took place at Birmingham’s NEC on the 5th and 6th October. I’m sure many of you will have taken the opportunity to visit the show in search of new suppliers and products. This issue, we speak to a number of the show’s exhibitors to get their thoughts on the show. Also in this issue I had the pleasure of speaking to furniture designer, Angela Gidden MBE about her work with The Wilcare Group and their exciting new design-led brand, accentu8. We also take a look at what Sunrise Medical has to offer its dealers in our Meet the Manufacturer feature. On behalf of all the team here at TradePoint Magazine, I would like to wish all our readers a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. The donation has been made after former Wolves defender and Captain Jody Craddock donated £20,000 to BCH, where his youngest son Toby has been treated for leukaemia for the past two and a half years. The funds will go to the BCH appeal to raise £4 million for a new Children’s Cancer Centre. “There is no price that you can put on the exceptional level of care and expertise which the hospital have given Toby, but hopefully this donation will give something back as they move towards the target for the new Children’s Cancer Centre,” says Jody.

Kidz Scotland to return after successful inaugural event Disability Living’s new Kidz event is set to return in 2015 after a successful inaugural event in September in Edinburgh’s Royal Highland Centre. Organisers have confirmed the event will be held on Thursday 17th September 2015 at the same venue but this time in the larger Highland Hall due to an increase in interest from exhibitors. With 112 exhibition stands, visitors were able to access the most up to date information and advice on equipment, products, services, alternative funding streams and much more. Throughout the day the show welcomed 1,524 visitors, 60% of which were professionals working in the field including key buyers, purchasing and supply managers, equipment and loan store staff, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, paediatric nursing staff nurses and healthcare professionals, SEN teachers/assistant and coordinators, key staff from various local authorities and more. Also in attendance were a large number of families and carers who came along with their children so that they could try out the various pieces of equipment showcased at the event. Theraposture received high numbers of visitors to their stand where they demonstrated their sleeping solutions, such as the Mascot Mark 2 cot, the Safe-T Bed and the padded Hannah cot to therapists and parents of disabled children.

Liam Braddell, Theraposture Sales Director commented: “Kidz Scotland has been an excellent event for us. It has continued the success we achieved at Kidz South with visitors keen to understand more about the unique differences our cots and beds deliver. The overall atmosphere of the show was positive and refreshing as we engaged with so many new faces who were attending a Kidz exhibition for the first time.”

Dolphin Lifts Western comes to the rescue at Stroud Congregational Church Dolphin Lifts Western has installed a bespoke Stannah Siena stairlift at Stroud Congregational Church after the building’s lift became unsuitable for use. For the past 30 years the lift has played a vital role for parishioners who were unable to climb the spiral staircase that leads to the church, which is situated above a function room. When the cost of repairs were quoted at over £25,000 the church decided to seek cheaper alternatives and started looking

into the possibility of having a stairlift installed instead.

The stairlift is specifically designed to wrap around the church’s stone spiral staircase.

Church volunteer Kay Weaver said: “Several local companies came and had a look, but they were unable to help due to the style of the staircase. Luckily one of them recommended Dolphin Lifts Western and as soon as we met up with Director Tom Wakefield, we knew there was a solution – and at a fraction of the cost of repairing our original lift.”

Director Tom Wakefield explained: “This was certainly one of our more unusual installations, but working in conjunction with Stannah, we quickly put together a stairlift solution which would meet the requirements of Kay and her fellow parishioners at Stroud Congregational Church.”  www.tradepointmagazine.co.uk I 9

Abacus Healthcare makes bathing more enjoyable for Southampton family

Katherine and her mother Gillian are enjoying bath time again thanks to a Gemini assistive bath supplied by Abacus Healthcare

28-year-old Katherine Orman from Southampton, who lives with severe disabilities, can now experience the pleasure of being bathed at home thanks to a Gemini platform bath from Abacus Healthcare.

enquire about the possibility of a powered bath being installed in her home. Following home assessments, Pauline approached Abacus Healthcare to assist with the project and installation of a new bath.

Katherine requires 24-hour care from her mother, Gillian, and a Social Services care team. As Katherine has grown, bathing her at home had become extremely difficult and resulted in more bed washing. Since Katherine is unable to walk, moving her between rooms, from her bed and into the bath, requires transfer equipment such as hoists and wheelchairs. Although these have resolved many issues, bathing Katherine in a standard bath was still problematic, especially for carers who had to manually lift Katherine in and out of the bath.

Abacus Area Sales Manager, David Bertorelli, visited several times to provide guidance and offer support throughout the installation process. David assessed Katherine’s needs and the requirements of her primary carer, Gillian, to understand the challenges they faced day-to-day. It was then clear the Gemini bath would match her bathing needs perfectly, enhanced further by a more accessible bathroom.

Gillian first discovered the Gemini bath at her local Bradbury centre which provides respite care for disabled individuals and their families. Gillian contacted her local council and her Occupational Therapist to

Gillian summarised: “I can honestly say our new Gemini bath has improved our lives and happiness no-end. Being able to manoeuvre around the bathroom quickly and easily is so crucial. I have also been free of back pain for the first time in a long while. I can now comfortably bathe Katherine every day and when I say ‘bath-time’ to her, Katherine’s eyes light up and she gives me a big smile which is quite simply priceless.”

“We grant a 10% of sale lead fee to all retailers who recommend SensoryPlus” retailer incentive: Sensory Equipment from SensoryPlus Part of the Kirton Healthcare Group, SensoryPlus is one of the UK’s leading providers of sensory tools and environments. The team at SensoryPlus have identified a real opportunity for retailers who want to offer more to their customers while earning more money at the same time, all by means of a simple referral. SensoryPlus Product Manager, David Payne, explains: “Our sister brands, Kirton and A J Way, sell a great proportion of their seating solutions through distributors so we know there is a shared audience for our products with retailers often speaking to the same type of customer as we do here at SensoryPlus. We grant a 10% of sale lead fee to all retailers who recommend SensoryPlus which means they can offer their customers more while letting us do all the hard work! All we ask is that retailers put us in touch with customers who may be in need of our services. It really is as simple as making a quick phone call. “We provide a full design service for sensory rooms or gardens and can advise on a whole range of sensory equipment. More and more care and nursing homes are tapping into the benefits of sensory and understand it adds real value to their proposition.” For more information visit www.sensoryplus.co.uk or call David on 01440 765000.

The true value of branding With over 20 years experience in marketing, C.A.S Marketing has worked with many leading names in the disability, healthcare and lifestyle sectors, so we thought why not ask the C.A.S team for some advice on the importance of branding? C.A.S has supplied us with 5 easy steps to creating a brand, something more than just a logo, which can help you trade ahead of your competitors in difficult times and increase your profits. ďƒŽ www.tradepointmagazine.co.uk I 15

ost of the time businesses start thinking about marketing and brands when they experience change; it might be planned change as the company grows and develops or change in response to external factors, but it’s change none the less. This is the time when a business has to look at itself and ask where are we now, where do we want to be and what help do we need to get there.

Creating a brand is the first step, but what is a brand and how do you create one?

Briefly, a brand represents the emotional and psychological relationship that an organisation has with its customers; strong brands evoke emotion through colour, style, language and tone of voice. For example, how do you feel when you think about Aga cookers or Audi cars? Every reaction you have has been carefully orchestrated so that you, the consumer, buys into the brand and chooses to buy those products in preference to those of its competitors. According to the Design Council, “Businesses need to invest in growth, research and development during a recession; those that do not are 2.5 times more likely to fail than those who do.

branding

Creating a brand can be a very time consuming task for a growing business which is why many employ an agency to do so on their behalf. Whether you are a small or large company, a successful brand is what will set you apart from your competitors and is something worth investing in. It’s more than a logo, it’s a whole experience that embraces everything from the look and feel of brochures, advertisements, showrooms and a website to the buying process, after-sales service and professionalism of your staff. C.A.S Marketing has devised five easy steps to get you thinking about your brand, what you can do to set yourself apart from your competitors and ultimately generate higher turnover and increased profits.

Step 1 Establish your values, your vision and your mission

Think about your company; who are you, what do you aspire to be, how do you see yourself getting there? What words would you use to describe your business?

Step 2 Define your target market

Who are your customers, what are their needs, where are they based?

Step 3 Analyse your values

What do they mean, what colours would you

use to represent them. For example, purple is perceived to be regal, high quality and to portray wealth.

Step 4 Discover a unique selling point (USP)

Review your competitors; what do they all have in common and what do you think is missing? Create a USP that sets your business apart.

Step 5 Create your brand

Relate your values back to your colours; think about the typeface and font size. Create your logo, keep it consistent and use it at every customer touch point such as letterheads, websites, in-store point of sale, advertisements and business cards. This is where a specialist consultancy comes into its own. In summary, branding is all about making sure that your people will create a positive experience, backing them up with quality processes and technology, and then measuring the results - remembering that whatever gets measured will be improved next time. It is easy to understand that this kind of seamless experience with your brand will produce good results, but it’s the market, not the company, that ultimately decides what constitutes a seamless experience.

T Trade Days 2014

he inaugural Trade Days event took place at Birmingham’s NEC on the 5th and 6th October. Over 1000 trade visitors attended the show over the two days, taking the opportunity to meet new and existing suppliers, view and compare product ranges and gain new ideas. The exhibition hall was also home to the Pharmacy Show for the two days, with a reported 3000 visitors taking the opportunity to cross between the two. Many also took up the invitation to attend the free seminars on offer at the four theatres in the exhibition hall. There were 56 seminars in total covering topics including sales, marketing and customer service, led by a number of industry experts. In total, 149 exhibitors filled the exhibition floor, with many manufacturers taking the opportunity to launch new products at the show; an estimated 600 were on display around the exhibition hall, from manufacturers including TGA Mobility and the Blue Badge Company. Among these was the new Easy Rider scooter from Drive Medical, who were delighted with their experience at the show.

The Grand Opening From left to right: Charlotte Gillan (Classic Canes), Steph Richardson, Chris French, Natalie Coward (all Cinque Ports Mobility) and Richard McGleeman (Drive Medical).

Drive Medical Managing Director, Richard McGleenan said: “Trade Days was a resounding success for Drive Medical in terms of spending quality time with our customers. The Sunday in particular worked well in that certain customers, normally too busy during the week, were able to spare the time to attend. The fact that entry was restricted to Trade customers also gave the show a very relaxed mood conducive to good, constructive business discussions. As far as meeting our business needs Trade Days felt very much like a square peg in a square hole and we were delighted to rebook for next year.” In order to attract visitors to their stands, a number of exhibitors came up with creative ideas and incentives to engage with customers. A number of exhibitors had ‘show only’ offers, highlighted to visitors in a booklet distributed as they arrived, while others, such as Electric Mobility and Isagi, ran competitions. Most innovative was TGA, who had a table football competition, where visitors could compete for discounts. Tim Ross, TGA National Sales Manager commented: “Considering this is a launch event, the TGA trade team and I have been

trade days

Are you sitting comfortably? The Cosi Chair Prize Draw Winner is… pleased with the interest and business generated at Trade Days. The table football competition added a fun atmosphere to the stand and several TGA retailers won enough games to achieve impressive discounts on our scooter range. Interest in the new Minimo Plus and forthcoming larger Maximo was high as our pioneering concept in car boot scooters continues to evolve. Overall the show had a relaxed atmosphere, with a more selective number of attendees, so our Area Sales Managers were able to spend time discussing business more thoroughly. The knowledge that you were only talking to trade people at the show was excellent in terms of faster qualification and the ability to pitch your angle correctly. We leave Trade Days with the knowledge that TGA retailers are up to speed with all our developments and have a better understanding of the unique trade support we offer.”

At the inaugural Trade Days event, Electric Mobility offered one lucky Retailer the opportunity to win the newly launched Cannington Cosi Chair with matching footstool in Spray Jute with Mahogany Queen Anne style legs. From the hundreds of entries into the free prize draw, Electric Mobility is pleased to announce that the winner is Iain Bellamy from Launceston Mobility. When given the news of his win, Iain said: “We were very pleased to win the Cannington Fireside Chair and matching footstool and it has complemented our display in the show room alongside the Avon and Orwell from the Cosi Chair range”. Iain continues: “We came to the NEC to see what products were on offer and the Electric Mobility stand stood out amongst all the others. Being able to see and try the products alongside each other goes a long way to helping us choose which products are right for our customers. Thank you for making such an effort to put a first class stand together.”

Plans are already in place for next year’s event, also set to take place at Birmingham’s NEC, and interest is already high from companies keen to rebook for the 2015 show. Ran Meyrav, European Sales Director at Amplicomms, said: “Overall the show was excellent for us, we got many new enquiries and have managed to meet up with older and existing clients. A particular plus was the good mixture of the type of visitors. We met OTs alongside retail and business owners, buyers and magazines etc. In terms of improvements, we will probably take a bigger stand next year!”

The next Trade Days will take place at Birmingham’s NEC on the 18th and 19th October 2015. For more information visit www.tradedays.co.uk

Made in the UK and FIRA Tested, the Cannington is both comfortable and stylish with its traditional elegance and Waterfall Back design. The chair offers superb neck, back and lumbar support and this proved to be very popular with the Retailers at the event, receiving great admiration for the British craftsmanship and resulting in many orders to stock showrooms. Elaine Leighton, Marketing and Communications Manager, who drew out the winning entry said: “Following the huge success of the show with Dealers, Retailers and Exhibitors alike, product demand for the Cosi Chair range has gone through the roof! The positive feedback received indicates that the Trade Days event was productive, focused and definitely the right platform to showcase the new Cannington from Cosi Chair.” The extensive range of Riser Recliners, Fireside Chairs and Sofas can be ordered for Retail showroom’s from the Customer Services Team on 0800 252 614 or email sales@electricmobilty.co.uk. GROW YOUR BUSINESS The Importance of Customer Service

Every company knows how important customer service can be to their business. A friendly face or a little extra help can be the difference between a sale and a missed opportunity. With this in mind, we take a look at how you can maximise business through providing excellent customer service.

C

ustomer service is a crucial area of business. Whether you deal with customers face to face, over the phone, online or a combination of all of these, you must ensure that whoever is representing your company is doing it in a professional, friendly and helpful manner. Every customer wants to feel valued, no matter what they are spending with your company. A customer who spends £5 with you should feel just as important as a customer who spends £500. Word of mouth is one of the most powerful marketing tools at our disposal and it doesn’t cost a penny. The impression your staff make on a customer can have a lasting effect, so make sure it is the right one.

Motivated, Knowledgeable Staff

Your staff are of vital importance to your business, they are the face of your company and you need to be confident that they are delivering the service that your customers deserve. They must be very knowledgeable about the products they are selling. Knowledge is power in selling, the more a sales person knows about the product the better they can answer questions, alleviate concerns and solve any problems. Having a motivated, knowledgeable and happy workforce can make all the difference to your business.

It is therefore worth investing time and money into your staff to ensure they are happy. Try to set aside time for team meetings or product refresher days so there is an opportunity for people to raise questions, learn new things and discuss any concerns. Consider introducing incentives and bonus structures for all the staff, not just sales staff. This will encourage everyone to pull together and work towards reaching a common goal. It can be a good way of motivating staff and creating some good team spirit.

See The Bigger Picture

The general rule of thumb in marketing is that customer retention is more cost effective than attracting new customers. It therefore makes financial sense to do everything in your power to retain existing customers and where better to start than with great service. It is very easy for sales people to solely focus on targets. This can lead to them trying to sell a customer more than they need or to them trying to sell the most expensive products. However, if we look at the bigger picture, a customer wants to be honestly advised on what they really need and if they find someone they trust who is not going to oversell them items they don’t need, then they will return again and again. Building up trust with your customers is a great way of securing their future business.

Resolving Complaints

We all know the old adage ‘the customer is always right’, and we all know that this is not true. That said, we still have to be diplomatic in these situations even when you know the customer may not be entirely in the right. Most people simply want to vent their complaint to someone who will listen, so the best thing to do is to listen to them, find out what it is they are upset about, apologise for making them feel unvalued and then take the necessary steps to resolve the problem. Most customers will be placated if their issue is dealt with quickly and efficiently and they feel they have been listened to. Aim to leave an unhappy customer in no doubt that your company values their custom highly. This will go a long way to ensuring they will remain as one of your customers. A well handled complaint can turn what would be bad word of mouth press into a real positive for your company’s reputation.

Gaining The Edge

Try to think creatively to gain the edge over your competitors. You don’t always have to lower prices or introduce offers to do this. By providing a better environment for customers to shop in you could secure their business over your competitors. Consider offering your customers something to drink when they arrive in your store. You could offer hot drinks in winter and refreshing water or juice in the summer months. This is not only a thoughtful process to introduce that your

24_Grow_your_business_jm.indd 25

customers will enjoy, but it is also a great way to strike up a conversation and build a rapport. It will also keep your customers in your store for longer. The longer they are there browsing or discussing your products, the more likely you are to get a sale. And the next time they need to buy something they will remember the service they received in your store and will hopefully return.

Take advantage of seasonal opportunities

Christmas is a great time of year to make your customers feel special. Consider offering them a small wrapped gift when they make a purchase, have Christmas sweets on offer or send out cards to a list of all your existing and potential customers. This is a nice touch and it will keep you in potential customers’ minds. Use company ‘birthdays’ as an excuse to promote your store, hang balloons and banners and offer customers and passers by birthday cake or a glass of bubbly (don’t worry it doesn’t have to be champagne!) Contact your customer database and let them know about your celebrations and entice them down to your store with promises of cake or a one day special offer. At the end of the day you want to make each and every one of your customers feel special and to do that you must surpass their expectations of customer service. Do this and you are guaranteed good customer retention and great word of mouth recommendations.

Why you need Sole-Mates® insoles

Sole-Mates insoles are based on simple but effective scientific principles. They contain a fluid and a fluid doesn’t wear out. Happy Feet insoles are based on simple but effective scientific principles. They contain a fluid and a fluid doesn’t wear out. Nor can it be squashed or flattened, it displaces. Pressure from the heel and ball of the foot pushes it up under the arch of the foot, lifting and supporting it, tilting the wearer slightly back. This leads to a realignment of the spine that now supports the weight of the head and upper body, taking pressure off the lower back. Because the fluid is spread across the arch, your weight is spread over a larger area, reducing the pressure on the ball and heel, allowing you to stand, walk or work for long periods with little or no pain. It’s this simple principle that allows Happy Feet to provide instant relief for people suffering with foot related problems including Plantar Fasciitis, Morton’s Neuroma, Bunions and Heel Spurs. As well as protecting and supporting the foot, the fluid acts as a shock absorber, taking pressure off the damaged tissue. In addition, as you walk, the fluid moves across the muscles of the foot giving a gentle, constant massage to the foot. This action has been clinically proven to increase the circulation to the lower legs and feet by more than 50%, reducing tiredness, cramp and other problems caused by poor circulation, including gout and diabetes. Rica

The UK Mobility Scooter Market - a Rica report The latest research report from Rica (Research Institute for Consumer Affairs) takes a closer look at the UK Mobility Scooter Market, offering an insight into the needs and concerns of scooter users across the country.

Mobility Scooters: a market study, 2014, draws on a new Rica survey of 480 scooter users, an analysis of market data and studies, and industry consultations. Carried out on behalf of the Department of Transport, the report will inform future transport policies that address the needs of disabled and older people with mobility impairments.

scooter owned. • New purchasers often do not get access to good information and assessment of their needs. • There is a lack of training opportunities necessary to ensure safe use of mobility scooters. • The purpose and requirements of the registration of class 3 mobility scooters are not clear.

This study reports on three specific aspects of the mobility scooter market: • mobility scooter market trends • profile of mobility scooter users • consultation on class 3 mobility scooters

Recommendations

Key findings • There is a lack of comprehensive, reliable commercial data on the size of the mobility scooter market. “Best estimates” put the number of units sold per year at approximately 80,000 and total number of UK users at approximately 300-350,000. • All data and Rica’s consultations confirm high levels of annual sales growth in the sector (5-10%) with evidence of increased advertising and a widening range of retail options. • Online and second-hand retail sales are growing (30% of scooter users surveyed had bought online and 30% owned a second-hand scooter). • Prices of mobility scooters vary widely. Recommended retail prices (RRPs) are widely published but do not accurately represent sales prices which are often substantially lower. • 48% of respondents owned a wheelchair as well as a mobility scooter and 27% owned more than one type of mobility scooter. • Many survey respondents were reliant on their mobility scooter: 74% said they would not make the same journeys if they could not use their scooter. • Class 2 boot scooters were the most common type of

• There remains an urgent need for accurate statistics on mobility scooter use for policy makers and those planning public transport, road and pedestrian infrastructure. • More research is needed to clarify the safety issues associated with increased pavement use of scooters, in particular stopping distances. • Compulsory insurance is likely to be unpopular. However, consultation with the insurance industry is needed to identify options for widening access to low cost insurance. • The requirement to register class 3 vehicles should be reviewed. • Greater availability of local (community based) and national training schemes for mobility scooter users are required. he Wilcare Group is entering into a bold new design-led era with the launch of their new brand, accentu8. To mark the launch, accentu8 have unveiled six new rise and recline chairs in a choice of powered or manual operation: arc, cloud9, haven, horizons, lotus and mode. The new models are the work of furniture designer, Angela Gidden MBE. Angela joined parent company, the Wilcare Group in 2013 as Consultant Creative Director with the aim of introducing a design-led ethos to the company and its marketplace. Angela said: “The thing that surprised me and frustrated me was that the sector in the main was incredibly dated, but also what really excited me was what an opportunity there was for a company to really take that bold step in terms of the sector.” Established in 2001, the Wilcare Group produces a wide range of powered rise and recline chairs for hospitals, care homes, mobility dealerships, charities and community equipment suppliers, from its Cowbridge factory. Anthony Kiff, Managing Director said: “Angela has not only revolutionised our product range, she has introduced design-led thinking and practice throughout our company introducing new concepts to what we believe is a very traditional marketplace in design-terms.” accentu8 also emphasises the ‘crafted with care’ aspect of its products, led by efficient and effective engineering in production, high attention to detail and quality of product, from the inside to the outside. The new rise and recline chairs are available in a diverse range of fabrics from the brand’s collection, ‘cover & colour’ – Healthcare; Lifestyle 1 and Lifestyle 2. A key focus of Angela’s was also

to make sure the chairs have an attractive 360 degree aspect. Angela explained: “One of my biggest gripes was that with a lot of rise and recline chairs there was little consideration for how they look from the back. So we worked really hard on making sure that from an aesthetic point of view it looks just as beautiful from the back as it does from the front. A lot of these products, particularly rise and recline chairs, don’t sit against a wall, they are put in more of a freestanding space so one of the very first things I did was make sure that we paid as much attention to that as we did any other part of the design.” Throughout Angela’s career as a furniture designer, colour, texture and textiles have all been key considerations in her designs. The new accentu8 range is no different, without compromising on the functionality of the chair. As well as their modern look, the chairs have been designed with ease of assembly and disassembly in mind. Most models are available with a full range of functions and mechanisms, including rise and recline, recline only, rise only, tilt-in-space and bariatric. The new accentu8 range was launched at Trade Days in October and since then the feedback from within the industry has been very positive. “When we launched at Trade Days, one of the comments we had from a number of visitors to the stand was we’ve been waiting for something like this for years.”

If you are interested in stocking the new accentu8 range email info@accentu8.net or call 01446 776 111. To keep up to date with all the latest from accentu8 you can follow @accentu8made on Twitter.

Following the launch of the six new rise and recline chairs, the team are now working towards their next range of products set to launch in 2015. Angela added: “In terms of what we do next we’re going to be innovating even further. And that’s really important because as a design-led business you can’t afford to be complacent. We’re looking to continue to improve by design but also to innovate by design. We’ve already planned another two design programmes in 2015 so there’s going to be a lot more to come from accentu8.”

interview

60 THE

SECOND INTERVIEW

We take a minute to get to know one of the leading figures within the independent living sector a little bit better. This issue we caught up with Andrew Stevenson, Sales Director at NRS Healthcare.

What are you most passionate about in your role at NRS Healthcare? I think I’m most passionate about bringing solutions and awareness of solutions that exist to the community, wherever that community is. We’ve got a great range of products and services but it’s actually a real challenge to let people know that they are available. We’re very much in a need-driven market but I suppose my passion is to make people want those products. Name: Andrew Stevenson Job title: Sales Director Company: NRS Healthcare

What can we expect from NRS in 2015? We’ve got a significant range of new products that will be coming out throughout the end of 2014 and increasingly in 2015, and some expansions and developments on existing products, bringing them up to date. Previously the industry’s been very much driven by local authority provision but we’re increasingly seeing a move towards people buying products that are more independent living so style, design, colour and quality are becoming increasingly important aspects of a product range.

What has your proudest moment been as Sales Director? I think it’s actually building a successful team of area sales managers, product demonstrators and a customer service team that is far more customer

focused and far more in tune with the demands of the current marketplace. They are a bunch of people who are caring and professional in what they do and have got the same passion and commitment to drive the business forward. I think they’re a team that’s made a significant difference and I think its increased NRS’s position in the market as a serious company, a growing company and a good place to be.

How do you like to spend your free time? I’m a passionate supporter of Manchester City Football Club. My son joins me on that mission and we travel around the country supporting them. Also spending time with family. I’m going to be a grandfather for the first time in December so that’s something to really look forward to.

What is your dream holiday destination and why? In my previous career I was fortunate enough to travel all over the world for over 25 years so I promised my wife we would take a cruise around the world and stop off at some of the places that I’ve been lucky enough to have been. I was fortunate enough to see those places and it would be lovely to be able to share that with her. Visit NRS Healthcare at Naidex National 2015

TGA Minimo Plus The Minimo Plus represents the first scooter to combine the benefits of a folding, compact car boot scooter with a mid-sized 4mph model. The new Minimo Plus incorporates all of the features of the Minimo, launched in 2013 along with additional attributes including larger pneumatic tyres, more powerful motor and controller, integrated light, higher ground clearance and enhanced batteries. It also provides a higher rider weight capacity than the standard Minimo so users weighing up to 115kg (250lbs) can be accommodated. The pneumatic tyres provide a smoother, more comfortable ride and extra range when compared to solid tyres and can include TGA’s puncture sealant for peace of mind. These tyres are combined with larger 228mm (9”) rear alloys so the Minimo Plus chassis provides higher ground clearance of 70mm. Its 820mm turning circle ensures driving around town is hassle-free and the upgraded batteries ensure a range of up to 15 miles (24km) on a single charge. Active rear suspension adds to the stability of the Minimo Plus and anti-tip side castors provide safety when negotiating uneven surfaces or lowered kerbs. The Minimo Plus remains easy to lift when folded for storage in the majority of car boots. The unlocking levers are quick to engage.

REHACARE 2014

Over 50,000 visitors from over 40 countries descended on the international trade show REHACARE at the Dusseldorf Exhibition Centre in Germany, which drew to a close after four days on Saturday 27th September. Trade visitors, people with disabilities and medical professionals were able to view products and services from 902 exhibitors from 36 countries, such as aids for mobility and independent living, aids for outpatient care, communications equipment, barrier-free living and ideas for leisure, travelling and sports. Visitor numbers were up on last year, with those polled reporting a 96% satisfaction rate with the fair and the ranges on display. The exhibitors at REHACARE 2014 were particularly pleased with the high turnout of trade visitors who attended, with more than 8000 travelling from abroad. The majority of visitors were most interested in products and services from the mobility sector, which was represented by over 200 exhibitors covering everything associated with wheelchairs, mobility scooters and walking aids. Almost one in two visitors wanted to gather information on walking and mobility aids such as vehicles and

wheelchairs, as well as daily living aids. Also popular among visitors were the car manufacturers and retrofitters, as well as the ranges revolving around Barrier-Free Building and Living. Tourism, leisure and sport also saw an increase in interest, with both the travel market and especially the Sport Centre becoming the activity hub of the trade fair. Visiting REHACARE for the first time was Rob Davies from Manchester based retailer, Mobility Choices. Having established the business with business partner Gavin Dean six years ago in a small high street shop, Mobility Choices has achieved such extensive growth that it is now based in a large warehouse and showroom in the city’s Denton area. The business has achieved great success, not only in customers visiting the store but also in online sales which now account for an incredible 65% of the business’ sales with customers all around the world. Due to his busy schedule Rob was only able to attend REHACARE for one day so careful planning was required to ensure he made the most of his visit. Rob arranged appointments with the two major suppliers he was most keen to speak to and highlighted around 20 others he hoped to visit in search of two main categories of product.

trade fair

A number of UK based manufacturers could be seen exhibiting at this year’s show, with many reporting great success. The team from TGA Mobility were delighted with the results they achieved at REHACARE in partnership with their Dutch distributor Preston Ability, successfully debuting the new 32st capacity Wheelchair Powerpack Plus as featured in Issue 1 of TradePoint Magazine. Eric Cooper, TGA Powerpack Product Manager said: “I am delighted to report our new Powerpack Plus has received significant levels of enquiries at REHACARE. We were busy all our days of the event demonstrating how this new solution will enhance wellbeing and independence for bariatric wheelchair users and their carers. It was a pleasure once again working with our Dutch partners at Preston Ability who supported this debut by demonstrating the proven results of our existing Powerpack range. We believe this new model represents a significant development in the global mobility sector and has already been endorsed by leading occupational therapists.”

Exhibiting at Rehacare for the first time this year was Kirton Healthcare. Mark Fowkes, Sales Director at Kirton Healthcare explained: “We’ve been exporting for 20 plus years now but really only on demand because we never employed an international sales manager so we didn’t have the reach in Europe to follow up enquiries or look after customers as we would look after customers in the UK. This year we made a conscious decision that export would move in from the back burner and we’d be pro-active in sales outside of the UK and we employed an international sales manager in February of this year. So that’s why we decided to visit REHACARE for the first time this year.” The show was a great success for Kirton, who successfully introduced their product range to a new audience and they are now planning to exhibit again in the future as they work towards establishing themselves in the international market. “I think overall it was a fantastic opportunity for us. We had around 30 good, keen enquiries to follow up, companies from New Zealand, Australia, through Europe and the US and we have received our first few orders in the last couple of weeks so it’s been a really positive experience for us.”

The next REHACARE will be held in Düsseldorf from 14 to 17 October 2015. For more information visit www.rehacare.com

“I’ve always wanted to go for many years and it was a natural progression really with the way the business has grown so we decided to go this year. I had a couple of meetings set up that were going to be very important to the way the business is set up over the next 12 months and there was also two major German suppliers we wanted to see exhibiting so that was a real incentive to go,” explained Rob.
