Feel on top of the world On the most important day of your life we can take your emotions to a far higher place.

EDITOR’S NOTE

Something borrowed…

I

’m fortunate enough to have one of the best seats at the majority of weddings I attend. Call it a front-row view, if you will. My ‘side hustle’ has been my role as a wedding celebrant for the past few years now, and since I’ve become licensed, I’ve married close to forty couples. You name it, I’ve seen it. From weddings on a private yacht, or an island, to weddings in a backyard. You can even add in a minions themed wedding. Yep. A wedding celebrant is fortunate to be included in some of the best moments in the wedding ceremony – quite often when you’re in the crowd, you miss the little things. The best part of my job is seeing the emotion close up and hearing the whispers. Yes, sometimes these hushed exchanges are along the lines of ‘just shove it on!’ when the ring might be a little firm, or perhaps a little in-joke between couples. It’s all truly fantastic. I do sometimes get caught up in the moment as well! I love love. I get to see the couples I’ve married start families or move overseas together; it’s a special feeling to know I’ve had a part in making that happen. The wedding day goes so fast, and more often than not, I’ve seen couples too wrapped up in making sure everything goes to plan to enjoy the day. I feel half my job is to remind couples to stay calm and take a moment to breathe… and to just enjoy the presence of each other. Weddings are one of the moments that stick out as landmarks in life – I’ve heard so many stories about my own parents’ wedding and they’ve been married close to forty years now. It’s part of life for many people who consider it the ‘next step’. It’s the beginning of something new, and to be a part of it is so incredibly amazing.

So, enjoy this issue of the magazine today. Something borrowed, something blue. A wedding themed Avenues that is just for you. Joshua Brosnahan Editor

FEATURE

To have and to hold Even in 2019, weddings are still a big deal. An age-old tradition, predating most civilised society, that most people will only undertake once in their lifetime – and quite often in a grand and particularly declarative way. This public declaration of connection would lack depth without the promises that are commonly included in vows. The traditional wedding ceremony of a couple standing in front of close family and friends – those that love you, and support you, is what gives the statement of a marital union its force. A wedding is about people, and a successful wedding involves many, whether they’re there on the day or not. Avenues talks to three key players in the local wedding industry who are along for this wild ride – making it their business to support you throughout one of the biggest events in life.

WHERE THE WILD THINGS WED WORDS Kim Newth PHOTOS Supplied

R

omantic souls may look to Paris as the city of love but wedding events entrepreneur Samantha Gerard believes New Zealand ranks with the best in the world when it comes to out of the box, intimacy-inspiring locations and venues. A stylist by trade, Samantha’s innovative business Wild Hearts Wedding Fairs NZ was founded on her vision of wanting to showcase New Zealand as an innovative, world-class wedding destination. Since launching in Nelson in 2015, the brand has grown into a nation spanning platform for brides-to-be, fashion lovers, industry leaders, and influencers. “I have a background in fashion design and event planning,” Samantha says. “[But] when my now-husband and I got engaged and moved back to New Zealand, after living in Melbourne, we found it very hard to plan our wedding. Everything here was stock standard and we struggled to find the interesting, creative, styled vendors. I ended up starting my own styling business and forming connections with the most amazing people in the industry.” Within a few years, Samantha’s work was featured in international wedding and lifestyle publications such as Together Journal, Hello May, and Magnolia Rouge and this, in turn, provided an ideal platform for the launch of Wild Hearts. “I had always seen a gap for something more exciting in wedding events here, so together with a group of industry pals, we had an idea to shake things up and created a little wedding fair in Nelson in 2015, which went amazingly well. Shortly after, we officially became Wild Hearts and then, in 2017, we took the fairs nationwide! Today, we have vendors and designers travelling from all over New Zealand and Australia

to be at our destination wedding fair and runway shows.” Wild Hearts has rapidly established a receptive market among people looking for innovative and creative options when planning their wedding. Samantha’s focus is on giving them an authentic, uplifting experience that’s a world away from a typical wedding show. “The response has been amazing … Couples are getting creative and choosing vendors who are exciting, unique and able to celebrate their relationship in a personalised way. We love the growing trend for destination elopements and more intimate weddings. New Zealand has so many incredible destinations for couples looking for that special place to get married.” ilex at the Botanic Gardens is the venue for this month’s Wild Hearts Christchurch Wedding Fair, (Saturday, 7 September, from 4.30pm). Those attending can look forward to an evening of fashion, beauty, styling, entertainment, and inspiration. “Our level of vendors is beautifully to a high level – we bring together the best of the best. We are seeing a big rise in new vendors in Christchurch, adding some excitement and style into what was a very traditional industry. The highly anticipated runway show will feature an exciting range of stylish bridal wear and fashion for women and men from top designers.” Local food and beverages will be available on the night, with the event line-up also featuring a panel discussion of industry experts. (A hosted VIP package includes wine, canapés, generous goodie bags, and Bobbi Brown pamper stations, all inside the Truly Yours marquee). As well as wedding fairs, Wild Hearts offers inspiration via a blog, an annual magazine and an online directory of vendors.

SAGE ADVICE WORDS Joshua Brosnahan PHOTO Hannah Bird

L

ucy Magill leads the way when it comes to offering a wealth of wedding resources in our city. After struggling with the organisation of her own nuptials, Lucy quickly recognised there was an opportunity to create ‘something incredible’ for the local wedding and event industry. Thus, her website Christchurch Weddings was born. Christchurch Weddings is a ‘bible’ of resources, to build the foundations of a perfect day – personal blogs from Lucy herself, vendor contacts, planning, and even real wedding highlights. Lucy was surprised to find there wasn’t a ‘one-stop shop’ for people planning their own wedding day, here in Christchurch. “It seemed that every single region except Canterbury had its own wedding and events hub. “Through having this directory, I’m able to showcase the best of that talent and put my name behind the amazing local businesses. Anyone who is planning a special occasion can rest assured they are getting the very best, from concept to completion.” Lucy’s ‘day one vision’ was for a strong sense of community between both vendors and followers, and for her website to always stand honest and genuine in its offerings. “The platform Christchurch Weddings provides encourages people to speak freely – this means we can have some amazing conversations and throw exciting ideas around. “The rest of the website perfectly complements the directory to offer advice and inspire couples to plan the day of their dreams, focus on what’s most important to them, and keep the planning process as simple and care-free as possible.”

When prompted for her best tips on hosting a wedding to remember here in Ōtautahi, Lucy offered some sage advice. “Firstly, think about what makes you the insanely amazing, unique couple you are! Think about your favourite things to do; activities, what you love to eat and indulge in and work into your day ways to incorporate a small handful of those things. If most of your guests are travelling, why don’t you create a little Christchurch city guide of some of your favourite digs for your guests to explore in their downtime? “In terms of Christchurch specifically, we are lucky enough to have a constantly evolving city landscape, and quite often no two places look the same from one moment to another. This creates the perfect opportunity to freeze in time a place that no other couple gets to experience, but you. How perfect is this to reminisce on?” Naturally, Lucy also works as a wedding planner, where she takes a holistic approach to weddings. “I truly believe that the simpler you can make a wedding, the better. If working with a planner or coordinator isn’t for you, investing in a consultation with a planner can put you in place with a solid to-do list and is money well spent. “You’ve chosen your vendors because you adore their work, so handover your brief, and a couple of images that speak to you, then step away to let them create the magic. Surprises on your wedding day are mind-blowing, and by handing over the reins, you’re setting yourself up for one heck of an occasion. “It’s the most uplifting feeling, trust me!”

THE PERFECT MARRIAGE WORDS Joshua Brosnahan PHOTOS Supplied

T

he South Island has long had a tradition of rural hard work, and Middlehurst Station is one of the original high-country runs that has contributed greatly to this. The station has been run by Willie and Susan Macdonald, along with their four children, since 1998. With a massive coverage of 16,550 hectares in the Upper Awatere Valley, Marlborough at the top of the South Island, Middlehurst has consistently delivered Merino wool, and more, for decades. Middlehurst Station extends right to the top of the rugged Inland Kaikōura Ranges. Nestled in the clouds, this is classic high-country ranging in altitude from 550 metres to 2,500 metres, with the homestead at 800 metres. The height makes it ideal country to raise Merino, long been the breed of choice to create soft, luxurious, warm, and durable fabrics used in international brands. Today, Middlehurst, along with Cheviot Block, runs 11,000 Merino sheep and 1,200 Angus cattle. Recent wool weight figures were impressive, with the farm producing a whopping 67,000kg of wool. Both the Macdonalds describe themselves as ‘high-country people’. Willie was raised in Fiordland, on Davaar Station, The Key. Susan was brought up at Halfway Bay near Queenstown. Together, they managed Cecil Peak and Mt Nicholas stations before moving to run Middlehurst. Susan studied wool classification at Lincoln University and adores the shearing and wool classing process. Susan ‘frequently marvels’ at the endless possibilities that this raw material has to offer. After a chance meeting with an Italian business, Susan arranged for 700kg of her best wool to be sent over to the town of Biella, which has had a wool industry since 1245 AD. “We sold rams to a French farmer and made the decision to travel by air with them, for

delivery. We then hosted a field day with a local farmer, from where we struck up a conversation with Fratelli Piacenza, and from this connection, we organised for our Merino wool to be sent over to Biella, the wool capital of Italy.” Fratelli Piacenza Wool Mills – an historic wool mill – is known for carrying out all of its production with sensitivity and the utmost respect for the environment. This business facilitated farmers in turning their wool into textiles; because of this, the wheels began to turn for Middlehurst. Initially scarves were produced, then, after conversations with two soon-to-be-brides, the idea to turn raw Merino wool into a textile designed specifically for the bridal industry was born. Here the raw materials were carefully processed and blended with silk to transform into the incredibly fine-spun 50/50 Merino/silk textile. The finished product is a lightweight textile with a stunning natural lustre – incredibly soft next to the skin, and with it being a natural fibre, it allows the skin to breathe when hot and provides warmth when it’s cold. Wool is renowned for its excellent drapability and this is one of the competitive features it holds over many man-made fibres. Wool as a fibre is renewable, biodegradable, and recyclable – and lacks any nasty petrochemicals that are found in many synthetics. Willie and Susan’s aim is for a sustainable, productive family farming business. Building the Merino stud has been especially rewarding for the family, who are proud of the work they have done to transform their flock – by creating a distinctive type of textile, which is ideally suited to New Zealand environments and markets. “We want to make sure high-country traditions are maintained and passed on – and to have fun while we’re doing it. We’re up for a challenge and love the diversity of what’s possible here. We will just keep raising the bar.”

Events with distinction

K

A memorable event Kim worked on was a unique corporate transformation experience. Kim was tasked with transforming a three thousand square metre warehouse into a cross between a mission statement, interactive museum, and corporate roadshow. The process took about five weeks, and Kim was an essential part of the wider team, translating brainstorming sessions into tangible designs. She coordinated painters, builders, audio-visual technicians and a variety of specialists in order to achieve the vision. For over 25 years, Kim and her team have worked with a diverse range of clients, from planning and decorating weddings for local and international couples, to client events for Harcourts, Christchurch Casino, Anna Sui, Heineken, and Ballantynes to name a few. Whether you are looking for bouquets and wedding flowers, full wedding ceremony and reception design and setup, or a wedding planner to create the perfect destination wedding in New Zealand, Kim Chan Events can make it happen.

iwi owned and operated, Kim Chan Events is founded and run by Kim, who has had a passion for arranging flowers since childhood. After owning a string of successful businesses, here and in Hong Kong, Kim returned to her hometown, Christchurch to start Kim Chan Events. “I love to work with people, to help them achieve their vision. Some just want a little help here and there, while others want to hand over the entire project or management of their event to me. ON THE JOB

Wedding Photographer EMMA BRITTENDEN

I

love seeing people happy. I’ve been making people laugh with The Court Jesters since I was fresh out of school. The kind of comedy we do is collaborative, improvised, and a wee bit silly – a bit like the television show Whose Line Is It Anyway? People are often surprised that I’m also a wedding photographer, but to me, the two careers are a perfect match. Both are all about connecting with people. When I see couples who are deeply in love, to me they look just like amazing improvisers. They trust each other, they make each other laugh and they work so well together. I started wedding photography six years ago when it was fashionable to go away for big photoshoots in the middle of a wedding. One of my favourite changes in that time has been how many couples now want to stay with their guests and actually enjoy their wedding. I love the challenge of working quickly but still delivering beautiful portraits. Things like first looks or slipping away for little five-minute shoots

throughout the day work just as well – and mean couples don’t miss out on their own party! I tend to photograph a mix of weddings, engagements, and portraits, with the odd studio shoot thrown in. My philosophy is that working with me should feel fun and easy – and always end with you taking home stunning photos. I’ve been told that as a photographer, I am so much fun to be with and that I have an innate ability to make people relax and laugh. When it comes to weddings, I love working with people who care about the real stuff. If you want beautiful photos without abandoning your guests for hours, or if you feel awkward in front of the camera, but still want photos that feel natural and less posed, then I’m your girl. I also feel it’s important that I do the little things for you. Things like knowing your parents’ names, learning your story, and listening to what you want… not just what will look good in my portfolio.

ON THE JOB

Dressmaker JENNY LEA GOMES DA COSTA

I

was born in Christchurch but spent most of my childhood in the Marlborough Sounds; swimming in the sea, horse riding, and generally running around with no shoes on. From an early age, I loved all things sewing and crafty, and would steal sheets from the linen cupboard to make my creations from. I met Ricardo while he was travelling around New Zealand. We spent twelve years living in the UK and travelling around the world together, including an overland trip driving from London to Cape Town. We got married in 2010 in Cape Town, Ricardo’s hometown, and had a cheetah called Phoenix at our wedding. My wedding dress was my own creation. While living in London, I kept designing and sewing, making wedding dresses and evening dresses for friends and clients. When I moved back to Christchurch five years ago, I continued making my creations part-time while working

in a full-time office job. I finally took the plunge three years ago and left my job, to pursue my passion – due to an amazing opportunity to work alongside the lovely ladies at Wilkins Bridal. I specialised in women’s tailoring and wedding dress alterations. This year, along with Wilkins Bridal, I moved into beautiful new premises, with an intimate boutique feeling. I am looking forward to welcoming clients to this lovely space. Also, this month I will be launching my first collection of bridesmaid dresses, they have been designed with luxury and romance in mind and are made to be worn again and again, using locally sourced fabrics where possible to minimise waste and ensure a high standard of quality. I am excited for what the future holds and look forward to welcoming clients and making them beautiful garments that meet their individual style.

HOMES

WELCOME TO THE PROSPECT OF HOME OWNERSHIP WITH Harcourts Gold Real Estate

Buying your first home is often one of the most exciting – and potentially scary – moments in your life.

I Lynette McFadden Business Owner Harcourts Gold Harcourts NZ Inspirational Women Ambassador @lynette_mcfadden

can still remember the elation of purchasing, the discipline of pooling every source of income to provide the deposit and then moving forward to make that very simple house a home. It was the early ’80s and interest rates were stratospheric at 21 per cent, (yes, I know, hard to believe!) but it was also a time where everyone you knew was in the same position. Collectively, you were able to take that first tenuous step up onto the property ladder – but the world is a very different one now. Back then, the acquisition of a house was simply a question of ‘when’, today it’s become a matter of ‘if’, based on the variables that exist in the marketplace and within our current culture. So, it’s worth outlining what some of those variables are. Firstly, renting versus buying. Times have changed: the usual cost of a first home now sits between $375,000 and $550,000, with two-bedroom apartments or units and threebedroom houses in solid suburbs dominating. The weight of having a deposit – 20 per cent (or less, in some cases) – and then the ability to service the loan has caused a section of the population to simply say ‘pass’ to the prospect of buying and a hearty ‘yes’ to renting, preferring a lifestyle without the burden of

37

maintenance and mortgage payments taking precedence. Statistics show that the actual rate of home ownership in New Zealand sits just under 65 per cent, potentially dropping to less than 63 per cent in the next 12 months. So, those choosing to rent are a growing demographic; no doubt encouraging landlords to keep their property investment levels up. Secondly, KiwiSaver. The opportunity this range of products provides to first-home buyers cannot be underestimated and we are seeing buyers utilise them every week, including to purchase property at auction. If you don’t yet have KiwiSaver, I suggest you talk to a financial adviser or to your bank. The ability for a couple who both have KiwiSaver to combine their funds can make an incredible difference to a first-home purchase. Lastly, where should you buy? Every city has a suburb hierarchy, but I’ve found that aside from the very traditional ‘blue-chip’ (high-value) ones, Christchurch is becoming more diverse and interesting. The earthquakes, rebuild, and the inner-city regeneration are changing everything – people are shopping as much with their heart and with a view to the future as with their funds. And I say, well done! Whether you buy or you don’t, enjoy the journey!

venues handed over the reins of Torque Talk to Tom Newfield – who took Jaguar’s I-PACE out for a ‘day in the life’ of a busy restaurateur. With Earl Bistro, Welles Street and recent pop-up Otto Delicatessen, in The Yard under his belt, you can imagine Tom does a lot of inner-city urban crawl on a daily basis. Not to mention with a couple of other exciting projects due to appear next year – he’s regularly a busy guy, with plenty on his plate. And it sounds like the I-PACE was right up his alley. The new five-seater I-PACE is a pure battery-electric vehicle that’s a thrill to look at and even more thrilling to drive. Scooping awards such as World Car of the Year, World Car Design of the Year, and World Green Car, the I-PACE has made an impact with 30 accolades awarded, so far. We would say it’s the car of the future, but it’s already here. Tom describes his first time driving an electric car as ‘quite something’. “I always thought you could spot an electric car – most of them aren’t this impressive looking. The I-PACE has a massive amount of torque! On one hand, it’s got grunt, and I don’t even feel like I pushed it to capacity. On the other hand, it’s quiet when you’re driving, and it feels so safe and secure on the road.” Delivering 100 per cent of its impressive 696Nm torque immediately, the I-PACE will do 0–100km in 4.8 seconds.

Jaguar clearly knows how to make phenomenal cars. It’s got eight decades of experience in doing so, without resting on its laurels. The British firm has embraced all-electric transport and simply made it happen. I-PACE’s standout design was led by Ian Callum, one of the titans of modern car design. With a range of 470kms, it has addressed the ‘range anxiety’ that some might feel with an all-electric vehicle. With a 50kW fast charger, you can be back on the road from 0 to 80 per cent capacity within 90 minutes. Tom describes the technology in the car as ‘future-forward’. “I love the idea of the Jaguar In-Control app. Being able to review the car’s charging status and range at a glance and cooling or heating your vehicle to the desired temperature, even when I’m in one of the restaurants.” Seamlessly integrated technologies make controlling I-PACE’s features and staying in touch with the digital world simple. Whether it’s on the two-touchscreen duo-infotainment system and the Head-Up displays or on your smartphone, everything you need is never far away. “I look for a car that’s well designed, spacious, responsive and accessible – all things that make my life easier and more enjoyable on a day-to-day basis. Whether you’re after an electric car or a luxury SUV, the I-PACE feels like it could be a very appealing choice.”

great significance in her role as key designer and director of a business, now with five staff – and growing still. Davinia and her team ‘enjoy personally tailoring each and every design to its architectural context, and pushing boundaries to deliver a stunning result’. “The success of my studio has been achieved through the collective ability of the team to listen to our clients’ needs.” A busy life for a mum with a young family means the designer has to work on a finely tuned balancing act. “Often I get asked, ‘how do you do it….?’ I have an amazing team based in the studio, that is the backbone of what we do and the achievements we have scooped – this really is a true result of them and collectively their hard work.”

ighteen years in the interior design industry is a solid foundation for a creative, award-winning business. Davinia Sutton, with the backbone of a Diploma in Interior Design and a Bachelor of Arts in Spatial Design, has been in the business since the age of 23 and operating ‘Detail by Davinia Sutton’ for the past ten years. Her design practice – based in Merivale – is a high-end bespoke interior architecture business with projects across New Zealand and Australia, specialising in the ‘hard spaces of the home’: kitchens, bathrooms, laundry spaces, dressing rooms, media rooms, and study areas, to name a few. Davinia has put 68 awards under her belt since 2007; this total includes three on the international stage. Davinia’s experience plays a 41

Davinia describes her studio as a family, “one that I really appreciate, and love being a part of. We all share the design journey”. The team recently won big at the NKBA Awards, taking away a staggering 12 wins, including Outstanding Renovation of a Kitchen and 2019 Designer Of The Year. This reinforces the fact that Davinia and her team are on the right track. President of NKBA, Jared Dinneen describes Davinia as ‘one of the best in the business’ and a ‘complete professional’. “As an organisation, we talk a lot about how kitchen and bathroom design is a professional service. In order to be the best, you must learn your craft through education and industry experience. Davinia Sutton is the epitome of professionalism. She understands her clients’ needs and delivers exceptional work, while also being experienced, qualified and a creative genius,” Jared Dinneen says.

Davinia acknowledges some of the key contributors to her amazing results, as the team collaborates with many talented manufacturers and trades in the construction process. “For each project, there are usually seven to eight different trades involved. Without this talented skill base behind the scenes taking our vision and turning it into reality, we wouldn’t have the finished results that speak for themselves and the accolades we have received. There is a larger team that brings these projects together, which makes all the difference. “Engaging a designer is an investment, and our role is all about problem-solving. It’s like putting a puzzle together to resolve people’s living environments; taking a design approach to the mental challenge. “We enjoy working on all factors of the interior architecture – to ensure that the home or building reads and ‘talks’ as one. It’s a critical factor.”

Mind Matters: Stroke Awareness

The first part of the 2019 Alpine View Neurological Talk Series - in association with the Neurological Foundation. Alpine View is a new generation retirement village, with its own Wellness Programme (called TRILife) developed to enhance the lifestyle of residents through a focus on exercise, nutrition and state of mind. As part of this programme, they host TRILife Talks with expert speakers, to talk about the multiple aspects of Wellness. Alpine has been working with the Neurological Foundation to present further talks, focusing on different neurological conditions and research. The first presentation related to Stroke Recovery and Research. In the recent talk, Rich Easton, CEO of the Neurological Foundation, joined Alpine residents to introduce the guest speakers. They included Professor Maggie-Lee Huckabee, a world leader in communication disorders, and Emma Burnip, who is studying for her PhD at the University of Canterbury. Both are currently researching at the Rose Centre for Stroke Recovery and Research - a state-of-the-art facility at St Georges Medical Centre in Christchurch. They are working to help individuals who have swallowing and communication disorders to recover function, or improve sufficiently to gain a better quality of life.

They were joined in the talk by Eric Knapp, with his own personal story of stroke recovery and rehabilitation. Eric was a strong, handsome, young firefighter, who woke up one morning unable to move or communicate. He had suffered a devastatingly severe stroke. Eric spoke of his life before and after the stroke – when he was unable to swallow and how he improved when referred to the Rose Centre for rehabilitation. His brave story of survival, hardship, and recovery was truly inspiring – and he is now employed at the centre as a Patient Consultant… while at the same time hoping his story will help other similar stroke recoverees on their difficult journey. Mind Matters: Stroke Awareness - was the first in the TRILife Neurological Talk Series at Alpine View. You should keep your eye out for guest speakers later in the year, as members of the public will be invited to attend.

Alpine View is dedicated to helping residents lead a life worth living, focusing on health and wellness.

prenup, or to use its technical term “Contracting Out Agreement”, may be one of the most important documents you’ll ever sign. Approximately 10 per cent of couples have them, and they are becoming increasingly popular. A prenup allows you to contract out of the Property (Relationships) Act and set your own rules for division of property on separation and/or death. Not only can agreements be entered into between a married couple, but also civil union partners and de facto partners. Usually, they are signed before a relationship starts, although they can be signed during the relationship (aka the “mid-nup”). So, why consider one? It is the cheapest, most flexible and effective way of protecting assets from a current partner. Unless a signed prenup is in place, all relationship property is generally divided equally after three years, subject to limited exceptions. This means the terms of your will could be overridden in many cases by a surviving partner. Prenups are especially important to protect existing property from a previous relationship, or to ringfence differing contributions to a future family home. They can also be used to protect inheritances, gifts, and Trust distributions. As an essential part of any effective succession plan, they can be used to confirm the status of assets before transferring them to a Family Trust. 44

A prenup can also ensure that assets from your previous relationship will pass to your children from that relationship rather than automatically passing to a new partner or their children. For prenups to be valid, they must be in writing and signed by both parties after they have separately received independent legal advice. The same lawyer cannot act for both parties. The lawyers must witness their client’s signature and certify they have explained the effects and implications of the agreement and provided independent advice. Valid agreements can only be set aside if they become “seriously unjust”. The Court considers the terms of the agreement, the length of time since signing and whether it has become unfair or unreasonable, and balances those against the need for certainty. Agreements should be flexible and forward-thinking. What is fair at the start of a relationship may be unfair later if one party has stopped a career to raise children, or moved cities to support their partner, and this is not compensated for in the agreement. Existing agreements should be reviewed periodically to make sure they keep pace with changes in the relationship. A good, well thought out and simple prenup can provide both parties with certainty and security. So, it’s worth considering an agreement to ensure your assets are protected no matter what happens in the future.

IN DETAIL

Parlez-vous français?

W

e sometimes forget that there is a whole lot to explore in our own country. In Christchurch’s proverbial backyard – tucked away in Banks Peninsula – sits Akaroa. It’s a place with a unique history; having been settled by the French – leaving behind some of the most distinctly European architecture in New Zealand – with German and tangata whenua history too. There’s nothing like getting away for the weekend and escaping to picturesque Akaroa is the perfect excursion. Next month there is the added chance to be able to immerse yourself in French culture, entertainment, and romance as the town celebrates its unique history at Akaroa FrenchFest on October 11 to 13. Far from a one-dimensional festival, you’ll be captivated at every turn. Giving a nod to the Māori history of the town, a call to welcome will reverberate over the peninsula hills as a powhiri opens the festival. Settle in on Friday evening as you enjoy relaxing seaside dining and watch the street on the waterfront (Beach Road) come alive with entertainment and music. As day breaks on early Saturday morning, relive the European settlement of the area and take part in a living history re-enactment with The Landing on the main beach followed by the parade to the Recreation Ground.

As the day progresses, the official part of the programme will commence with speeches and the official flag raising. Once the pomp and ceremony are over, visitors can head to the Recreation Ground, where the Le Jour du Marche (Market Day) is taking place from 11am till 4.30pm. From French-inspired markets to games and food, to entertainment and live music, the market place will have something to keep a curious visitor occupied all day. Some of the more iconic events like the Waiters Race and the Cock Crowing competition are back again and are sure to impress! The party doesn’t stop when the sun goes down; Saturday evening is sure to be a memorable one. Perhaps the most French of all, there will be a ticketed cabaret – featuring an array of music and entertainment into the wee hours of the night. With a croissant in hand, and maybe a little bit of a heavy head, the final day – Sunday – has an exciting event for the kids with the Circotica Circus workshop plus a circus performance to close FrenchFest 2019. It’s at that point in the year when we all deserve a break – French-inspired happiness is just a quick one-and-a-half-hour drive over the hills and around the bays away.

There’s an event planning and operations team, run by Kate Burnell, and Eloise McIntyre looks after sales and event enquiries. Have your ceremony outside under the oaks, move into Cunningham House for canapés and cocktails, or dinner in the events space – why not party the night away in the ilex café space? From design through to service, the team is passionate about creating unique wedding experiences with a sense of effortless elegance; a full sensory journey inspired by the vibrant backdrop. The team at ilex makes all their food and beverages to reflect a continued appreciation of the land. They showcase produce grown and sourced locally. They want their dishes to reflect that Christchurch truly is the Garden City. There’s Akaroa salmon from just over the hill, smoked on Botanic Gardens Oak – sourced from pruned branches – as well as fresh herbs and edible flowers from the Gardens; suffice to say, it’s all pretty special.

ILEX CAFÉ

VICTORIA FOODS

THE SOCIAL PLATTER CO.

ilex café is a somewhat transformative, ethereal space nestled in the middle of the Botanical Gardens (you may have read about them in this issue!). Head chef Jonny Schwass has worked with the team on a premium set of menus, which means ilex caters to multiple events, from weddings to Sunday brunches, to corporate dinners. A striking offering on the events menu is the Korean chicken bao – delectable fried chicken with kimchi mayo, and a spring onion slaw. The charcoal bao is what makes this a chic offering for an event – charcoal is the new black.

Victoria Food Service brings fabulous food to life. The team promises to give you more than a catered event – you’ll be given an experience. With a bit of zesty fare and ‘deliciously different’ menus for corporate events and private functions, gala dinners and cocktail parties, to weddings and celebrations of every kind – you’ve got your canapés covered. We love the kumara rosti – layered with hot smoked salmon, and capers, with a classic dill and crème fraîche. It’s good to note that these are also gluten-free! Perfect for wowing your guests with flavour and presentation.

Social Platter Company’s biggest point of difference is that they make everything themselves, right from the breads to dips and crackers, spreads, and truffles. Their motto is ‘we love it, when you love it’. On offer is a range of grazing platters, truffles, and even donuts. We love their smoked chicken, cranberry and brie tartlets. They look stunning, taste even better, and are delivered in the Social Platter Co’s signature style – platters of sharable portions to complement their abundant grazing tables. Check out their offerings – they’ve got some of the best in town.

BOTANIC

VERVE CATERING

WHITE TIE CATERING

Botanic is an elevated garden bar on The Terrace, with chic New York styling and a menu to covet. Grazing is here to stay, so perhaps you could try the Botanic Picnic Platter; this is a selection for a group to graze on to their heart’s content. It includes a range of cold cured meats including pastrami, salami, chorizo, and everyone’s favourite – prosciutto. There’s a cheese selection, a seafood selection with smoked salmon, pickled baby gherkins, olives, sundried tomatoes, assorted nuts and grapes, and all topped off with a range of breads. Think crispy ciabatta, crackers and spreads such as hummus, pesto, pickles, olive oil. We’re hungry just thinking about it.

You might remember Verve from its Victoria Street premises, pre-quakes. The folks at Verve do their best to ‘keep it local’ by choosing to use other nearby businesses as suppliers. Using seasonal, local produce, meats, and cheeses whenever possible means you have a truly Cantabrian experience. They also choose to operate in an ethical and sustainable way and have implemented a waste reduction policy to help guide sustainable practices. Very 2019. The canapé offerings are classic and delicious – take the pear and blue cheese crostini, for example. A pop of colour, complementary tastes, and a great plating presence which works for multiple events, all year round.

White Tie Catering is an institution on the Canterbury catering scene, feeding Ōtautahi for well over thirty years. You can trust White Tie to pull out the big guns, delivering contemporary cuisine with exemplary service. The signature blini (savoury mini pikelets, to the unwashed masses) is a crowd-pleaser, and White Tie Catering’s stack of crème fraîche and salmon makes this a canapé to follow around the room. A tiny bite of light, fresh pikelet; the savoury goodness of the dill and crème fraîche that is light enough to keep you wanting dinner, but filling enough to counteract a few cheeky bubbles.

HUMANS OF ŌTAUTAHI

Jordan WEST MELTON

“I’m from Wellington, but I’ve been living here since 2016. I met my boyfriend online; we chatted for about five months then started seeing each other. I’d never been to the South Island in my life and I thought wow, this is amazing. “When I was in Wellington I was very different. My dad was very homophobic growing up; he treated me differently from my siblings. But then, I always had my mum for support, and she was great. I did wear make-up, but I didn’t wear as much because I thought hmmm it’s just not safe to be myself here – he was a big reason for that. “When I moved down to Christchurch, I thought right, this is a new beginning, a new start and I’m going to be living my life the way that I want to. No one knows me and I don’t know anyone here – it’s fresh. It was

the best decision I ever made, moving down to Christchurch. I love it here. “I love everything extra – scarves and accessories. I love voluminous hair; I really like the 50s and 60s, that style. Like, this is probably not even relevant, but I love the weather. Because Wellington was sooo windy, I would do my hair and then 10 seconds later it’s destroyed. Here, it’s perfect. “All the time I’m changing, changing. I feel like I’m just very comfortable wearing what I want. Some things may seem quite feminine and different, and unusual, but I really like that. People do look, I don’t really care; they’re just very curious. If I was young and innocent and had never seen a man in make-up before, I’d be looking as well, you know? That doesn’t bother me at all. “I can be who I want to be and I’m not afraid to be. I’m in a great place.”
