Ōtautahi Christchurch is ON SHOW in Spring
From raceways to runways, bring your spring style and experience some of our amazing events, attractions and hospitality.
In spring we celebrate Christchurch and its unique vibrancy. It’s the perfect season to enjoy everything our city has to offer!
Designer:JulietteHogan
This month’s highs and lows, brought to you by social correspondent and spiller of tea, Shelby Write.
Photo booths. Yes, we’ll squeeze six people into one frame, and yes, that photo strip will live on in my fridge until the end of time.
Fascinating fascinators. Unapologetically camp and fabulously unnecessary!
Kevin Jonas finally having a solo song, and crushing it!
Resene Showstopper. Be the life of the party with this rich mauve, vibrating with a lyrical, poetic quality.

NAH
Denheath in liquidation. RIP custard squares, truly the end of a sticky-fingered era.
Cup Day blisters. The true winners are the punters who smuggle flats in their handbags. Think ahead, ladies!
When ‘limited edition’ actually just means they shrank the packet but doubled the price.
A new Taylor Swift update every second day. Sorry, I said it. I’m exhausted.
EDITOR’S NOTE
Extra, extra – it’s good news!
Here at Avenues, we’re lucky to be in the business of good news. We love celebrating this place we call home – and it certainly helps when we’re stepping into the most glorious season of the year in our beautiful city: spring. As a thousand blossoms bloom, so too do our events calendars. Cantabrians take to the stage, the racetrack, and the runway, and suddenly Ōtautahi is well and truly On Show. It also makes me think about blooming in another way – through two stories in this issue that capture the spirit of growth. We’ve staged a stunning fashion shoot at the reinvented Botanic, now part of the Warring Group. This vibrant reimagining on The Terrace provided the perfect backdrop for spring style, thanks to our friends at Merivale Mall. And with New Zealand Fashion Week set to arrive in Christchurch this November, the timing couldn’t be more perfect – a stylish preview of what’s to come. Then there’s one of the most rewarding interviews I’ve done in recent memory: a conversation with Caroline Black of Grow Daily. Her mission is to instil emotional literacy in New Zealanders, encouraging us to move beyond Tall Poppy Syndrome and instead nurture a culture where people can truly flourish.

Spring invites us to pause, take stock, and be grateful – for blossoms, for fresh beginnings, and for a city in full bloom.
Yours,
Liam Stretch Editor

Cold-filtered below 0.5 degrees, this ultra-low-carb lager is crisp, clean, and uncompromising on taste. Since its launch last October, it’s become one of the South Island’s go-to six-packs – and is now stepping up with 12- and 24-packs this spring. ON TARGET
Christchurch surf rock band The Butlers have emerged from a brief hiatus to release a new single – Cannonball. The track sparks images of the Kiwi summer to come, with its upbeat energy paired with clever lyrics that capture a uniquely New Zealand perspective – clear evidence of the band’s coming of age. The Butlers are well and truly back, and better than ever.

DRUGS OR BUST
Katherine Kelly commands this smallscreen drama as Jo Conran, a flight attendant who visits her son in jail, accused of a murder he denies. Soon, she faces blackmail from a gang: smuggle drugs into the UK or risk her son being killed. In Flight from creators Mike Walden and Adam Randall is worthy of its 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

WAR AND PEACE

AN EASY WATCH
Heads of State, starring Priyanka Chopra, John Cena, and Idris Elba, is a surprisingly easy-to-watch action comedy. U.S. President Will Derringer (Cena) and British Prime Minister Sam Clarke (Elba) share a very public rivalry. But when Air Force One is shot down over enemy territory, the unlikely pair must go on the run and work together.
Debuting at the New Zealand International Film Festival, GRACE: A Prayer for Peace follows renowned artist Robin White. Directed by Gaylene Preston, it traces Robin’s evolution as an artist and her creative response to the world around her. GRACE was released alongside a re-release of Preston’s groundbreaking film War Stories Our Mothers Never Told Us. Made almost 30 years apart, the two works offer a profound cinematic pairing and a testament to Dame Gaylene Preston’s enduring voice in Aotearoa New Zealand storytelling – touted as her own “War and Peace.”

IMMERSED IN CHAMBER MUSIC

In January 1992, five classical musicians put on five concerts over five days in the acoustically pristine wooden hall at Nelson Centre of Musical Arts. They knew they’d tapped into a winning combination, and within a couple of years, their little celebration had bloomed into a biennial festival featuring international artists.
One of the original five was Gillian Ansel, who is a violist for the New Zealand String Quartet and the festival’s long-time Artistic Director, each time curating a programme that shows guest musicians at their best.
“I’m so delighted with the 2026 programme,” says Gillian. “Bringing it all together has been a true adventure with rather a lot of surprises, but it’s all been worthwhile.”
From the start, one of the stipulations of the Adam Chamber Music Festival is that all the musicians stay for the duration, so that connections that are fostered in the first rehearsals are nurtured and explored throughout the ten days of performances.
In 2026, the USA’s acclaimed Jupiter String Quartet will not only perform as an ensemble, but also in solo, duos, quintets, and as part of the Adam Festival Orchestra. It’s a revelation to see musicians in multiple incarnations on stage, in masterclasses and in artist talks. And with the venue being so small, foyer meet-ups and post-concert chats are a given.
For the 2026 international guests, this will be their only New Zealand performances, and a festival highlight will be American pianist and author Jeremy Denk , whom Gillian says “is rather a legend in the piano world. I can’t wait to hear his solo recital and his Schubert song cycle with Canadian tenor Colin Ainsworth”.
Adam Chamber Music Festival is on 29 January–7 February 2026.

SCULPTURE FESTIVAL REFRESHED
The annual Sculpture Festival at Te Matatiki Toi Ora The Arts Centre has a fresh feel this year.
New curators, Ryan Dewsbury and Melissa Reimer, have selected work by more than 50 artists, one-third of whom are new to the festival. With over 200 works, there’s plenty of variety, but broadly, the curators have favoured strong forms that speak for themselves. Jewellery continues to be a festival highlight. Those wearable sculptural pieces say so much about a person’s sense of style. Original hand-crafted jewellery has an enduring beauty that fast fashion simply cannot match. We’re worth it, right?
Ever-popular, glasswork and ceramics feature strongly. Expect luminous colours, fluid lines, intriguing textures, and playful shapes. Bronze, by contrast, is the iconic medium for high quality cast sculpture. Molten bronze will flow into every crevice of a mould so artists can create striking forms suitable for home or garden. Of course, there’s more with a range of small to large-scale works that will speak to collectors, art lovers, and the simply curious. Every piece tells a story – and every sale supports both the artist and Te Matatiki Toi Ora The Arts Centre. Entry is free. Works start at around $100. Visit 10am–5pm daily, 4–19 October, Te Matatiki Toi Ora The Arts Centre.

GROWING DAILY
Caroline Black is an educator, wellbeing strategist, and tireless advocate for helping people thrive.
Through her business, Grow Daily, Caroline focuses on delivering sustainable wellbeing and emotional literacy frameworks to teens, parents, and schools.
The inspiration for Grow Daily began close to home. “My son came home at about the age of five, and he said to me, ‘Mum, I know what my strengths are.”
The Character Strengths work her son had been doing struck her as remarkable – especially in a country like New Zealand, where humility often outweighs self-recognition.
“We’re an incredibly humble nation, but with that, we’re not very good at strength spotting.
“What tends to happen is we fault-find, because we see that as a way to make people better.”
Yet, as Caroline discovered, research shows that growth requires more than fixing faults – it starts with recognising and building on strengths.
At the time, Caroline was still a high school teacher, navigating not only the classroom but also the aftermath of the Canterbury earthquakes. Determined to find a better way to support young people, she studied the Langley Diploma in Positive Psychology and Wellbeing.
She went on to help establish a wellbeing education curriculum, and the results were profound. “We saw growth in emotional awareness, stronger relationships, and overall wellbeing – and students became more willing to talk about how they were really feeling. Not only that, wellbeing moved to the forefront of school life.”
Caroline knew it couldn’t stop there – and that’s how Grow Daily evolved.
Grow Daily’s mission is to equip people with the knowledge and tools to thrive.
At the heart of her work lies emotional literacy. For Caroline, it’s not optional – it’s essential. “Emotional literacy enables connection, learning, and leadership,” she explains. “And it matters as much for parents and educators as it does for students navigating today’s fast-changing world.”
“Parents and whānau are so critical to this learning too. At a recent parents’ evening in Auckland, there were over 460 parents attending – so dedicated and deeply committed to supporting their teens.”
To embed this, Caroline has adapted the Delta Model for Educators, a future-fit framework that positions emotional capability as a strategic strength in an AI-driven age. It helps schools integrate wellbeing and emotional literacy in ways that are practical, measurable, and sustainable.
“It grows what can’t be automated: trust, connection, and care,” Caroline says.
Grow Daily offers a suite of evidenceinformed programmes – from whole-staff professional development to student workshops and parent presentations.
In addition, Grow Daily works with parents and families, equipping them with tools to build emotional literacy and strengthen connection.
For individuals, mentoring and coaching focus on fostering growth, self-awareness, and the relational capability to navigate work, relationships, and wellbeing with confidence.
Beyond schools, Caroline and her husband have launched the Grow Daily Academy, which combines specialist academic tutoring with mentoring in confidence, motivation, and self-belief. Covering core subjects like Maths, Science, and English, the Academy helps students manage not only their subjects, but also their mindset – equipping them with the skills to learn, grow, and thrive for life.

RUNWAY MOVES SOUTH
Christchurch is set to get a whole lot more fashionable.
Ōtautahi Christchurch will host its first-ever New Zealand Fashion Week (NZFW) event this year, with the Christchurch Spring Fashion Festival presented by NZFW running from 7–9 November. The festival will feature a large-scale spring/ summer runway showcasing a curated mix of iconic and emerging designers from across Aotearoa with a strong focus on local Ōtautahi talent.
“We want to deliver a series of events that includes some of our iconic NZFW 2025 shows alongside experiences that shine a spotlight on Christchurch and the southern region. We’ve been inundated with interest from brands that want to be involved, so we’re exploring ways for local designers and labels to show up and have a platform to connect with their fans,” says Liam Taylor, NZFW Board Director.
Beyond the main runway, the festival will bring fashion to the city in new ways. Pop-up retail-based shows will activate key locations across Christchurch, while the Beyond the Runway series will feature panel discussions, styling sessions, and a designer lunch.
“Beyond the Runway is our speaker series. It’s about encouraging positive conversations and discussions within the industry, providing opportunities for our community and audiences to be inspired by designers and fashion leaders,” says Liam. “The series can take many forms – from panel discussions and lunch-and-learn experiences to podcasts, social content, and other platforms where people can engage with or learn from our designers.”
The festival marks the beginning of a three-year partnership between NZFW and ChristchurchNZ. From November each year, Christchurch will host a consumer-
focused, high-end fashion showcase as part of the city’s On Show spring events calendar, complementing Auckland’s August edition.
While Auckland’s NZFW Kahuria remains industry-led, Christchurch’s programme will centre on cultural storytelling, local business collaborations, and community engagement. In addition, NZFW will work with Ngāi Tūāhuriri to gift a name for the Christchurch festival.
Liam says the timing is perfect for Ōtautahi.
“Christchurch has a vibrant and growing creative community, and we feel the time is right to bring our platform south to help fuel this creativity. We also know Christchurch is a key destination for many of our designers, and the community here has a genuine love for fashion.”
One of those designers is Untouched World, the globally recognised Canterbury-based brand known for its sustainable knitwear.
Founder and CEO Peri Drysdale welcomes NZFW’s arrival.
“We have a thriving, positive city and region that would love the opportunity to engage with NZFW. For fashion to be truly sustainable, transparency isn’t just a bonus – it’s essential. That’s why we’re proud to be based in Canterbury, surrounded by an incredible network of local farmers and producers who make traceability possible from the ground up,” Peri says.
“There’s something special about having the same farmer who supplies your merino wool popping into your store as a regular customer. It’s a reminder that fashion should be personal, local, and deeply connected to community. We’re thrilled to see this vibrant regional network step into the spotlight at Fashion Week, because where your clothes come from matters.”

COMMUNITY FOCUSED
It’s been a whirlwind winter for the Giltrap Group, with the iconic automotive company proving its commitment to the community.
From the glamour of New Zealand Fashion Week to the roar of engines at its Starship Supercar Show, Giltrap has opened its doors and resources to celebrate creativity, community, and causes that matter.
In September, Giltrap Group hosted the third edition of the Starship Supercar Show at its Auckland headquarters. Spread across four levels, the event brought together more than 80 vehicles, a dazzling collection worth over $100 million. Motorsport machines, hypercars, classics, rally legends, and even a Toro Rosso Formula 1 car filled the space, creating a mecca for enthusiasts. Among the many highlights was the New Zealand debut of an ultra-rare Manthey Porsche.
Every cent of ticket sales went to the Starship Foundation, ensuring that the spectacle had a purpose far beyond horsepower. “This is in support of Starship Children’s Hospital and a great chance for us as a group, and for many of our customers, to showcase some incredible cars,” says CEO Steve Kenchington. “The cause is at the forefront. One of the best moments was seeing a Lamborghini wrapped in a design created by a young person currently receiving care at Starship.”
The family-friendly event attracted visitors and donors from across the country, reinforcing Giltrap’s philosophy of blending passion with purpose.
But cars weren’t the only focus this season. Just weeks earlier, Giltrap took centre stage as the naming rights sponsor of New Zealand Fashion Week. For Steve, the partnership was about more than prestige. “Part of supporting Fashion Week for us was about backing industries, talent, and emerging
businesses in our local communities. We saw crossover between what people love about the design elements of our cars and what they love about fashion.”
The collaboration went beyond branding. From a McLaren 750S engine start that signalled the beginning of shows, to the Giltrap VIP lounge lined with icons like Sir Colin Giltrap and Liam Lawson, the company infused its automotive DNA into the festival atmosphere.
As part of its involvement, Giltrap created the Helping Kiwis Fly – Fashion Edition Award. This inaugural honour went to designer Rebe Healy of REBE, who received a tailored support package: financial assistance, a Škoda vehicle for 12 months, mentoring from senior fashion figures, access to Giltrap spaces for shows or studio use, and coverage in Giltrap’s 66 magazine. “It’s about giving designers the tools to take off on a global stage,” says Steve.
The award echoes Giltrap’s long tradition of championing motorsport talent, helping Kiwi drivers compete internationally. Extending this ethos to fashion demonstrates the company’s broader vision: empowering New Zealanders to fly in their respective industries.
And the momentum continues. Giltrap is also a key sponsor of the inaugural Christchurch Spring Fashion Festival, presented by NZFW and running 7–9 November. Following the recent opening of its southern base in Islington, the company sees this as a natural step in building connections with Canterbury communities. “It will be a great event to be part of, and we’re excited about the ways we can support the Christchurch fashion community,” says Steve.

RACE AND DANCEFLOOR READY
The IRT New Zealand Trotting Cup returns for thrill and excitement – with a twist.
When the starter lets them go in November, it will mark the 122nd running of the IRT New Zealand Trotting Cup, Australasia’s most thrilling harness race and a jewel in the crown of Ōtautahi Christchurch’s Cup and Show Week. For over a century, the race has delivered electric energy, stunning style, and unforgettable excitement, drawing thousands to Addington Raceway.
Staying true to tradition, the IRT New Zealand Trotting Cup offers views right up to the track for punters to take in some of the best harness racing. While heritage lies at the heart of Cup Day, the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club (NZMTC) and Addington Raceway are also embracing the changing entertainment landscape. With audiences evolving and expectations higher than ever, the Club is introducing bold new concepts designed to attract fresh fans to harness racing, while elevating the experience for long-time supporters.
2025 sees the launch of The Infield, brought to life by Hyoketsu and The Edge – a reimagined party zone located in the centre of the track. Expanding on the legacy of the Lindauer Lawn, The Infield is bigger, bolder, and built for today’s social crowd. Festival vibes dominate the space, with DJs performing throughout the day, headlined by the legendary Shapeshifter after the last race and supported by Savage, General Lee, and more. Exclusive activations, including a Hyoketsu Bar, George FM Rave Room, Monster Energy Zone, and The Edge VIP space, will ensure The Infield delivers an atmosphere like no other.
“Creating a new area in the centre of the track was a natural fit. This location is fantastic for a festival-style zone and is right in the middle of all the action. We are absolutely thrilled to have a legendary act like
Shapeshifter headline. They are a cornerstone of the Aotearoa music scene, with a broad appeal that crosses over so many genres and fan bases,” says Brooke Henderson, Commercial and Marketing Manager.
The relocation of the party zone has created opportunities elsewhere on course, allowing the introduction of two new premium hospitality experiences. The Ned Lawn, positioned trackside, offers all-day catering, a complimentary bottle of The Ned wine at each table, and a dedicated bar service. Meanwhile, the Grey Goose Terrace on the IRT Stables Rooftop promises one of Cup Day’s most unique perspectives. Here, guests will enjoy allinclusive catering paired with a sophisticated beverage package, highlighted by bespoke cocktails from the exclusive Grey Goose Bar.
“With 85 per cent of all hospitality now sold out, it’s clear that the demand for a premium experience on Cup Day is stronger than ever. Adding The Ned Lawn and the Grey Goose Terrace ensures we can cater to that demand, offering our passionate harness racing fans and corporate guests two fantastic new options. These areas provide not only atmosphere and great views but also two distinct levels of packages, giving our attendees more choice than ever before to enjoy this incredible day,” says Brian Thompson, Chief Executive Officer.
Together, these additions demonstrate Addington Raceway’s commitment to reimagining Cup Day for a new generation while honouring the traditions that have made the event iconic. From racing purists to festival-goers, from corporate hosts to fashion lovers, IRT New Zealand Trotting Cup Day 2025 is set to deliver an experience that captures the heart of the sport and the spirit of celebration like never before.

Architecture vs building

Richard Dalman Managing Director, Dalman Architects dalman.co.nz
What is it that lifts mere utilitarian buildings into the realm of ‘Architecture’?
We all have an idea of what great architecture is, as we have witnessed such buildings around the world. For me, the Parthenon in Athens, Sagrada Familia Cathedral in Barcelona, and the Sydney Opera House immediately come to mind.
And closer to home in Christchurch, I would suggest the Great Hall in the Arts Centre, the Christchurch Town Hall, and our new library Tūranga are all fine examples of Architecture with a capital ‘A’.
So, what do these and other buildings have that gives them such a revered status?
The Roman architect and engineer Vitruvius wrote that fine buildings should have three main attributes: firmitas (strength – they should be structurally sound), utilitas (utility – they should be practical and have a purpose), and venustas (beauty – they should be aesthetically pleasing).
I believe these characteristics are still relevant today in assessing a building’s architectural merits. But there is more.
Great architecture should make you feel something – creating an emotional response.
It should be memorable – there could be mystery or surprise.
And architecture has a duty to relate and respond to the location, be it built form, natural environment, climate, history or culture.
However, architecture doesn’t need to be grand and expensive. Take, for instance, the Chapel Street Centre pictured above. This is an earthquake rebuild of the old Methodist Church that used to grace the site. While the budget was tight and the floor plan simple, the tower on the corner is a landmark recalling the old church spire, the low-level windows allow views in and out to the local community, and the large timber entry is a strong, welcoming gesture drawing people in. Whilst a fairly modest building, it was recognised with a National Architecture Award by the NZ Institute of Architects.
Ultimately, architecture distinguishes itself when strength, utility, and beauty are balanced with sensitivity to context. The best buildings do more than perform; they resonate. Whether grand or modest, these works remind us that the spaces we inhabit shape our experiences, enrich our communities, and can inspire us to see the world differently.

The seasonal promise of spring

Lynette McFadden
Business Owner & Mentor, Harcourts gold
@lynette_mcfadden
It’s that magical time in Christchurch, spring – although it might not always feel like it. You see, as I pen this, it’s raining, grey, cold, and wintery.
But none of that matters because spring in Christchurch doesn’t arrive in a neat bundle. It either drops in dramatically or it creeps ahead slowly, and three seasons in one day isn’t unusual for its locals.
One morning, you’re scraping frost off your windscreen and by the afternoon you find yourself regretting taking a coat to work.
But for all the rhetoric about the weather, the daffodils, the blossoms, and the prospect of Daylight Saving, it’s the events that the city plays host to that really ignite interest and its newest venues.
We’re a lucky lot.
Riverside Market and The Terrace start to hum. Tables outside get scooped up quickly by patrons still wearing winter puffers, and there’s a sense of expectation. Spring is
also when the events calendar starts to look interesting. There’s a Heritage Festival, which could involve a behind-the-scenes look at a heritage building you’ve walked past a hundred times.
The WORD festival has delivered its literary best, and this year that’s included an extraordinary book by my longtime mentor, Gilbert Enoka, titled Become Unstoppable, and the city starts its march toward our regional anniversary day and the races.
Essentially, for me, it’s the small shifts that matter most.
Sitting outdoors to enjoy family meals, not feeling like I need a headlamp when I brave the streets for my early (very early) walks, and seeing my own garden start to bloom.
Above all, it’s a time and a season that teaches us to relish the fleeting and the prospect of what I hope will be a wonderful run-up to summer.
So, do your best to get out and enjoy it.
FINDING JOY IN COLOUR

There is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to colour, says Anna Dick of Anna Margaret Interior Design.
For Anna, design always begins with a starting point: an object, a colour, or a style. Colour can change a space from meh to wow; however, using a palette that clients still love in 10 years, when colour trends have come and gone, is a real skill. She says that at Anna Margaret Interior Design, the focus is on story-building, creating spaces that are cohesive and sympathetic to the architecture, location and, most importantly, the clients. “Interior design is about whatever brings you joy, and it’s very different for everyone, so balancing these aspects is where the art in design lies.”
A recent project reimagined a Beckenham bungalow for a growing family. The extension added two living spaces, two bathrooms and four bedrooms, designed for function and layered with warm, earthy tones that reflected the clients’ style. The palette included Resene Rascal (in the living room), Resene Quarter Sorrell Brown (bedroom), Resene Foggy Grey (ensuite), as well as Resene Half Sisal, Resene Bud, Resene Birthday Suit, Resene Sea Fog, Resene Half Sea Fog, Resene Spanish White, and Resene Terrain.
Choosing colour is about purpose and connection. What looks beautiful on one side of a house may not work on the other, and each room needs to relate to the whole. She often begins with a neutral colour family in varying strengths, then layers other tones to expand the palette. Currently, she loves the soft, natural combination of Resene Del Rio, Resene Spanish Green, and Resene Half Truffle – a backdrop that harmonises with blues, terracottas, reds, charcoals or walnut.

VENUE 105 BY CRISP & VALE
Before Crisp & Vale existed, Hannah Crisp was immersed in the world of fine food. She trained at the Cordon Bleu Tante Marie school of cookery in London, honed her craft at Rick Stein’s flagship Seafood Restaurant, and gained Michelin-star experience that sharpened her eye for detail and flavour. When she moved to New Zealand 15 years ago, Queenstown became the birthplace of Crisp & Vale – a catering company defined by bold flavour, playful presentation, and a love of New Zealand’s best produce. Crisp & Vale became known for bringing imagination and style to every event, from intimate dinners to high-profile celebrations. Now based in Christchurch, the journey continues with Venue 105. This renovated industrial space, with soaring ceilings, polished finishes, and an abundance of natural light, reflects the same ethos that shaped the business from the start: creating space where food, people, and setting come together to create memorable moments. Already, the venue has hosted product launches, milestone birthdays, tastings, and exclusive corporate dining. CHRISTCHURCH ART GALLERY
Te Puna o Waiwhetū Christchurch Art Gallery isn’t just a cultural landmark – it’s one of the city’s most iconic and inspiring venues. Behind its striking glass façade lies a collection of flexible, light-filled spaces that can transform to host almost any occasion. Over the years, the Gallery has welcomed everything from corporate events, cocktail parties, and Christmas functions to fashion shows, product launches, weddings, and intimate civil services. Much of the magic comes from the building itself. Its shimmering glass panels make it impossible to miss, and with the ability to be illuminated in practically any colour, the Gallery can reflect your brand, your theme – or even complement your wedding dress. Inside, the spaces are equally impressive. The iconic Gallery Foyer, perfect for 300–500 guests, offers grandeur and flexibility. The Philip Carter Family Auditorium treats up to 178 people to cinema-quality sound and vision, while private exhibition viewings can be arranged to spark conversation and create unforgettable memories. Of course, the success of any event relies on more than the setting. That’s where the Gallery’s expert events team comes in. If you need a DJ to get guests boogying or a PA system for wedding speeches, they’ve got you covered with AV and lighting specialists on hand; they’ll connect you with suppliers who know the building inside out and ensure everything runs seamlessly. If catering is also on the cards, they’ll be able to help with preferred suppliers, and even food trucks can be set up in the courtyard outside. And with competitive pricing right in the heart of the city – think $3500 for the spectacular Gallery Foyer – it’s important to get in early to help secure the event space. Its location, straddling Montreal Street, Worcester Boulevard, and Gloucester Street, is also close to several carparking options and public transport routes. If you’re ready to impress your guests, don’t wait too long to secure your date. The easiest way to start is by emailing venue@christchurchartgallery.org.nz. christchurchartgallery.org.nz

Cucumber salads had their supermodel moment, posing in puddles of sesame oil, soya sauce, and crispy onions. Matcha strutted in behind it, showing off with strawberry syrup mini skits. Cookie-stuffed croissants arrived with all the enthusiasm of fast fashion. All of them are Instagrammable, fleeting, and, in my opinion, destined for the clearance rack. And, of course, a garnish of gold leaf: the edible equivalent of a Van Cleef bracelet. The ultimate splurge that everyone wants to be seen wearing.
With New Zealand Fashion Week coming to Christchurch this November, I can’t help but think about how food has its own version of a runway. Menus get their seasonal refresh, chefs show off their new collections, and diners decide what’s worth a repeat wear or what will be left behind like last year’s low-rise skinny jeans. The hype cycles of food and fashion run in parallel, each producing those fleeting must-haves that look fabulous in the moment but don’t always last beyond the season.
But the classics remain. Just as jeans and a white T-shirt will outlive every microtrend, roast chicken and chocolate cake will always stay in fashion. They don’t need to be zhuzhed up or worn ironically. They just work.
My friend Sally knows this better than anyone. Every year for her birthday, she requests the same thing. Nigella Lawson’s Guinness chocolate cake. Dark, malty stout folded into cocoa and sugar, baked into a rich, moist sponge that tastes deeper than any ordinary chocolate cake. On top, a swoosh of tangy cream cheese icing, pale and pillowy like the head on a pint of Guinness. It’s elegant, indulgent, and timeless. It’s the Chanel suit of cakes if you will. You don’t mess with it, you don’t reinvent it, you just keep returning to it, season after season.

Of course, part of the fun is playing with trends while keeping one foot in the classics. Order the gold leaf tartare for the photo, try the croissant stuffed with whatever sweet is hot this week, but know that comfort lies in the dishes that don’t need an Instagram filter to shine. They’re the meals you crave on a grey Tuesday night, or the recipes you pull out when you’re needing comfort. Because in both food and fashion, trends may come and go, but the true classics never leave the runway.

The great pancake pilgrimage
If there’s one thing that proves breakfast really is the best meal of the day, it’s pancakes. This month, Avenues’ food editor Sophie Petersen pursued a pancake pilgrimage, stacked with pillowy, maple-drenched classics, delicate lace-thin crêpes, golden crisp dosas, and the savoury wonder of Japanese okonomiyaki.

CRÊPES DE LA MONDE
The Crossing, 166 Cashel Street @crepesdelamonde
Take a wander through The Crossing, and you’ll find Crêpes De La Monde. This place is a little slice of Paris, with its pastel-pink fit-out and oh-so-charming owner, Antonia. The scent of sizzling batter fills the café, while plates arrive at the table dressed like edible art. The menu flits between sweet and savoury crêpes. We tried the Dubai Pistachio Chocolate crêpe, layered with strawberries, and a lemon-sugar classic that tasted like pure sunshine. Pots of peppermint tea rounded it off in the cosiest way. Crêpes De La Monde is so delicious, you will leave plotting your next sweet or savoury visit.

DOSA KITCHEN LITTLE POM’S
Riverside Market @dosakitchennz
At Riverside Market, the air hums with spice and chatter. A global food hall where Dosa Kitchen holds its own with one of India’s greatest pancake exports: the dosa. Paperthin, golden, and crisp, it’s made from a fermented rice and lentil batter, folded around a comforting spiced potato filling. The Masala Dosa arrives hot off the griddle, large and in charge, with onions mingled through the mash, served alongside chutneys and sambar for dipping and dunking. It’s delicious, warming, flavour-packed, and very satisfying. The Dosa pancake is proof that not all pancakes need syrup to steal the show.
294 Kilmore Street @littlepomschch
On the leafy corner of Kilmore and Fitzgerald, beside the iconic Pomeroy’s Pub, Little Pom’s is the definition of a neighbourhood gem. Inside, the atmosphere is warm and inviting, with locals sipping flat whites and chomping on cheese scones while morning sunlight filters across the room. I was recommended to try their Ricotta Blueberry Hotcake, and it did not disappoint. She’s thick and fluffy, layered with berries and comes crowned with grilled banana, toasted nuts, maple syrup, and a generous cloud of vanilla ricotta cream. It’s indulgent, sweet, nutty, and rich. It’s easy to see why Little Pom’s is always humming.
OKONOMO JUJU
Christchurch Farmers’ Market
Every country has its version of a pancake, and in Japan, it’s the glorious okonomiyaki. And at the Christchurch Farmers’ Market, Okonomo Juju is serving some of the best you’ll find outside Osaka. ‘Juji’ means sizzling in Japanese, and that’s exactly what you’ll hear (and smell) as these savoury pancakes are cooked fresh on the hotplate. Crispy on the outside, soft in the middle, and topped to your liking with cabbage, mayo, or a dash of bonito flakes dancing in the steam. Each bite is delicious! Comforting yet exciting, hearty yet light, and utterly moreish. There was also a chicken fried noodle dish that will no doubt see me back at Juju’s soon enough. What a delicious way to start your Saturday. You’ll find Juju sizzling away between Posh Porridge and Bacon Brothers, so just follow the sound of the grill, breathe in the savoury aroma, and prepare your taste buds for oishii perfection you’ll keep craving.

Bubbles and bites
It’s time to raise a glass to the season! With the city buzzing over the coming months, the only question is – where will you sip bubbles and have a bite? We’ve rounded up some of the best spots to kick off the celebrations.

AIKMANS MERIVALE
Let the sunshine spill and the Cloudy Bay Pelorus pour this summer at Aikmans Merivale. Sink into the louvred pergola area, flip open a menu, and start with a glass of bubbles. Feeling summery? Go for an Aperol spritz and call it a day. As for bites, a grazing platter piled with cured meats, cheeses, and pickles is always a crowd-pleaser. Or dive into a dozen briny oysters, a bowl of truffle fries to fight over, and silky duck liver parfait to smear on warm bread. The small-plates menu is perfect for sharing and dipping between sips. And in case you didn’t know, they’re hosting a champagne breakfast on Cup Day. Trust us, you’ll want to be there. aikmans.nz

ZODIAC
Spring is the perfect season to take to The Terrace and stop by Zodiac. The outdoor seating overlooking the Avon River is just as inviting as the stylish interior. And what better way to welcome the season – or kick off an event – than with one of barman Arnie’s cocktails? This spring, he’s crafted the Blossom Tease: a refreshing mix of strawberry sake, Hendrick’s Gin, plum and strawberry tea syrup, and other fruity flavours, all finished with a silky egg white foam. Discover this and more at Zodiac this month, and keep an eye on Avenues’ socials for the recipe.

HALSWELL

“I moved here as a student initially, so I’ve done my postgraduate diploma in Business Management here. In India, I did a Bachelor’s in Commerce. The whole time in New Zealand, it’s always been on my mind to start something of my own. I wanted to start a business.
“I’m very lucky that I was born into a family where they supported me. My father showed confidence in me when he decided to send me over to New Zealand to study.
“Back in 2011 after the earthquakes, I was living in Tauranga. I always wanted to go to a place where I could see more opportunities, that’s why I decided to move to Christchurch. I think that’s one of the best decisions I ever made. When I picked Christchurch, I considered a lot of different factors, like raising a young family. I have experienced a lot of good things, like the people being welcoming and really friendly.
“When you live in a society, I think it’s everyone’s duty to give back. For example, when I came here, I was in my twenties, I learned a lot of different things. I’ve seen Christchurch rebuild after the earthquakes. All these things
encouraged me to do business for my family. I took over the Nottingham Convenience store in September 2024.
“I’ve worked in hospitality, worked in retail, and worked in other jobs too. I’m a social person. I feel comfortable when I’m around people. I feel whenever I’m talking to someone, I just feel like I’m connected. For example, if I ask someone ‘How is your day going?’ sometimes the person is going through a rough patch in their life.
Unfortunately, some people don’t have anyone to share with. That one slight word of confidence can change their whole day and their mood.
“There are a lot of families around in the community. They trust us. I’ve got a lot of customers of different age groups. There are kids, there are adults, there are old-age people (I call them experienced people). I always treat everyone with respect. I don’t like to talk about negative things – life is too short.
“Like any small business, you definitely need the support of the locals to make it successful. I’m very thankful and very grateful to the locals for this support.”
