Democracy is a verb.

We can’t afford to wait until November to participate in democracy. Because while casting your vote matters, it’s one action half a year away. Democracy demands your participation today. Literally today.

Because right now, we can effect change. We can direct funding to organizations that are actively engaged in the work of democracy. Organizations like Protect Democracy, striving to ensure free and fair elections and defend the rule of law. Voto Latino, educating and empowering a new generation of Latinx voters. And State Voices, building political power among marginalized communities so they can advocate and organize for their own communities.

Early money allows pro-democracy nonprofits like these to be more efficient and flexible with the funds they receive. November is too late.

Want to show your support?

Marin Community Foundation has established the Safeguard Democracy Fund which supports credible nonprofits, vetted by experts, that are doing hard work on the ground.

And thanks to the generosity of MCF’s long-time donors, Ginnie and Pete Haas Jr., every donation to the Safeguard Democracy Fund will be matched up to $250,000. That’s double the impact.

Democracy is about taking action. The time to act is now. Visit marincf.org/safeguarddemocracy today.

WOMEN IN CHARGE

Have you ever had something you publicly fought against turn out to be totally successful? About 25 years ago, I passionately fought against the Camino Alto Starbucks in Mill Valley. Within a year, it turned into my favorite “office” and a backdrop of many happy memories and empty calories for my daughters as Mill Valley Middle School and Tam High School students. A great example of short-sighted resistance on my part. And then back in 2018, I thought focusing an entire issue on women seemed insulting (as if we need the help). However, I quickly changed my tune when that first Celebrating Women issue hit the stands. Laura Hilgers penned a feature article about how four very successful local business owners — Margaret O’Leary, Joan Barnes (Gymboree), and sisters, Susan Griffin-Black (EO Products) and Karen Goldberg (Tamalpie) — encouraged each other through decades-long friendships in good times and bad, and in the profile section, I loved seeing businesses like Equator Coffee, Ona Life, the team at Happy Feet, the female sales team at Golden State Lumber, and tons of real estate agents including Christine Christiansen and Lori Odisio. These businesses represent a fun time capsule of the county’s thriving business scene. By 2019, our cover featured big wave surfer — and at the time sommelier for Valenti & Co. — Bianca Valenti, that opened to an award-winning article by Kirsten Jones Neff on pay equity. In this issue, our seventh dedicated to the ladies, is our best yet. The cover, shot by Cameron Cressman, reflects the strength and connections forged by hard work and dedication. Fun fact! What we know now as artistic swimming was originally

synchronized swimming. Besides being an Olympic event, the sport is still going strong in pools throughout the world. Just last year, our Redwood Empire Masters brought home a bronze, two silvers and a gold (won by Nancy Weinman in the 70–80 year category!) in the World Aquatics Masters Championship held in Kagoshima, Japan. Speaking of strong women, we take a look at how mothers and daughters succeed in business together — can we say the popular “Smith & Sons” trend has waned? If you’re seeking inspiration, on page 46 we introduce you to three inspiring women from Marin; Pierrette Jeanmonod, Jacqueline Annette Sue and Joan Linn Belkins, who broke through that glass ceiling as if it was made of sugar. And in the ‘warms the heart’ category, it’s great to see Stephanie Cannell, Architectural Design Carpets, Aging Solutions and Chambers + Chambers in 2018’s and 2024’s profile section! As a women-owned company, we appreciate the support.

In closing, I’d like to give big props to my mother Nikki Wood, who founded Marin Magazine in 2005, as well as Coast Magazine in 1991. We have worked together for many years. She is now my business partner (along with our third partner, Nikki C. Wood) at our expanding boutique media company, 270 Media. More than half of our all-women staff has been here for over ten years, as have many of our writers, which feels more like a family than a workplace. Cheers to being wrong! We hope you enjoy this issue, and as always we love to hear from you either way!

Mindfulness —

For a Happy, Healthier Existence

What does “mindfulness” mean? Quite simply, the opposite of being “mindless.” It's noticing the little moments in life, appreciating who you are and what you have. Needless to say, much has been written about it. Go beyond fear, anxiety and nagging self-doubt with the help of one of these books, written by local authors.

TODAY I NOTICED

A Little Book of Mindfulness That Will Change the Very Way You See The World

A little gem of a book with sparse text, one-line suggestions, and simple illustrations that encourage creative mindfulness. As these Bay Area authors demonstrate, “noticing” is a totally natural act; no special skills are required. A great intro in mindfulness.

The Mom Behind “Dear Mama”

So many words have been written about Tupac Amaru Shakur, arguably the most influential rapper to pick up a microphone. Yet 2023’s Tupac Shakur: The Authorized Biography, by Mill Valley native Staci Robinson, reveals that the icon’s greatest influence was his mother Afeni. In fact, it was Afeni who asked Robinson — a friend from the Shakurs’ time living in Marin — to write her son’s life story.

Afeni Shakur was a lifelong revolutionary and member of the Black Panther Party. Just months after she became a Panther at age 22, she and twenty others were arrested and indicted on charges of conspiracy to bomb several New York City department stores, police stations and landmarks. The trial was called the Trial of the Panther 21. A pregnant Afeni, who had no prior legal experience, successfully defended herself and was acquitted of the 156 charges she faced. Tupac was born one month later on June 16, 1971.

“People need to learn about Afeni’s history because they need to know that she's the one who passed him the baton,” said Robinson. “She was this remarkable activist, somebody who put herself aside for

her community then passed that baton to Tupac and said, ‘Here, it's your turn now.’”

The values of education and Black pride that Afeni passed on to Tupac eventually made their way into his lyrics. But underneath his hip hop superstardom and multi-platinum records, Shakur was the son of a powerful, complicated woman.

WHAT'S IN A NAME

Bon Tempe Lake, a reservoir, was created in 1948, but its history dates back to the 19th century. In 1868, three Bautunpi brothers leased 1,180 acres of land on Mount Tam and ran a ranch and dairy farm which supplied the U.S. Army, San Quentin and San Rafael with butter. Local papers Americanized their name from “Bautunpi” to “Bon Tempe.” In 1878, the brothers sold the land to the Marin Water Company, and later the dam and reservoir received the Americanized name. Sea Level Rise Strides

Given that Marin is surrounded by water on three sides, adapting to climate change is a top priority, and the County just got a big boost — $500,000 — to develop a unified approach to address it. Results from the 2023 Marin County Community Survey showed that over three-quarters of respondents said it was essential for Marin to focus on addressing sea level rise and climate change in general. The responses also largely echoed the Board’s countywide priorities:

• Building a racially equitable community

• Investing in County infrastructure

• Preserving and increasing affordable housing, and addressing homelessness

• Reducing carbon emissions and adapting to climate change

• Enhancing disaster preparedness

• Addressing County workforce recruitment and retention

To guide this project, the County will contract a firm that specializes in infrastructure consulting. Public engagement opportunities will be available and announced once the contract is underway. marincounty.gov

A Bolinas Artist’s Intricate Lanterns

A

labor of love.

David Jaap van Leeuwen spent 30 years teaching (art metal shop) at Bolinas-Stinson School. But once school was out, you would have found him in Myanmar. The country’s 2021 military coup has prevented his return, so at home in Marin, he funnels his passion and years of travel into a new project: elaborate, six-foot-tall lanterns.

What are these lanterns?

These very colorful, ornate and decorative lanterns are electric, weigh over 250 pounds each and are made mostly out of wood. They’re large, over six feet tall. I see my lanterns as works of art, and so each one is signed and dated, etched in brass.

How do you make them?

There are many steps. The geometric lattice parts that make up most of the design are laser cut, which I outsource to a Santa Rosa company called Light Wave Laser. Then comes a lot of painting, finishing and detailing, and after that, the installation of electric cords and light bulbs. It takes about four months to finish a set of lanterns. Luckily I enjoy the process, so the time doesn’t matter. Making them is a labor of love.

How do you choose the colors?

My trips to Southeast Asia and my appreciation for Asian art have influenced me in many ways. I’ve experienced that

exhilarating feeling of entering a golden temple with exquisitely painted murals. I want viewers to feel that awe when they see my lanterns. The lanterns have a jeweled appearance, like extensions of the gold jewelry I used to make.

When did you start learning about Southeast Asia?

When I was about 12 years old, I met U Thant, the Burmese diplomat and general secretary of the United Nations. Meeting him created a strong impression. I went to Burma (now Myanmar) for the first time as an adult in 1985.

I went again in 1995, and then every year from then until 2020. Traveling yearly to Southeast Asia became part of who I was. In Myanmar, I taught English and rubber mold-making to children who lived in the monasteries, leading me to found the nonprofit Sharing Merits. It funded projects mostly for Myanmar schools, like wells, water tanks, land to grow food and more.

How did you start making these lanterns?

I have always made art in some form or another. I’ve been a jeweler, a metal sculptor and an art teacher, and I’ve reproduced Asian art in concrete. My first lantern set was just for the fun of it. Feeling pleased with how they looked, I made 12 more using different colors, shapes and sizes. Those took a year to finish, and I showed all 14 at the Bolinas Gallery later that year. When I look back on those 14 lanterns, I see them as practice pieces that brought me to where I am now.

See Jaap van Leeuwen’s art on davidjaap.com, and his nonprofit work at sharingmerits.org. He invites those who want to see his lanterns up close to email him at david@davidjaap.com

A Day at the Zoo

Behind the scenes at the San Francisco Zoo & Gardens with CEO and executive director

Tanya McVeigh Peterson.

As the CEO and executive director of the San Francisco Zoo & Gardens, Tanya McVeigh Peterson, J.D., typically welcomes 800,000 visitors a year who come to see the zoo’s many amphibian, avian, invertebrate, mammalian and reptile residents; lush gardens; and historic 1921 Dentzel Carousel and 1904 Little Puffer steam train. It’s a job McVeigh Peterson finds immensely rewarding, but it isn’t always easy. Early in her 15-year tenure, McVeigh Peterson saw the zoo through a dark period in 2007 after a Siberian tiger escaped from its habitat and killed one visitor and injured two others. And, there are plenty of challenges that come along with managing the zoo’s unique operating and financial structure. Here, McVeigh Peterson tells us about how she came to work at the zoo, the zoo’s conservation efforts and what lies ahead for the beloved local institution whose San Francisco roots date back to 1866.

Tell us a little bit about your background. You studied law, correct? Yes, following my clerkship with a federal judge, I initially practiced at the law firm of Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher and then became in-house counsel at Hewlett-Packard (HP).

How did you come to start working at the San Francisco Zoo & Gardens? I first volunteered my time, joining the board of trustees and assuming leadership positions on the board over time.

When did you take on the role of CEO? It was during a time of crisis, correct? Following a tragedy involving the zoo’s Siberian tiger on Christmas Day, 2007, I was asked by the zoo’s board of directors to assume the role of interim zoo CEO. At the time, I was vice chair of the board but also still in-house counsel at HP, where I had been exposed to both crisis and legal management. Because of that experience, I became so committed to the zoo’s mission that I assumed the role permanently.

How did the zoo respond to the tragedy? Obviously, physical changes were made to the habitat to restore the public’s confidence, including increasing the height of the moat’s exterior wall. But almost as important, a campaign to teach visitors how to respect wild and zoo animals followed.

FAST FACTS: SAN FRANCISCO ZOO & GARDENS

How does your legal background help you today in your role at the San Francisco Zoo? Although its mission is relatively straightforward, the zoo’s management and funding are more complex. The San Francisco Zoo sits on land owned by the City and County of San Francisco but is managed by a nonprofit institution via a “private-public” partnership. Some folks say that just reading the partnership agreement requires a law degree!

What is a typical workday like for you?

As you can imagine, there is no “typical” day at a zoo. My favorite days, however, are showing visitors the wonders of our zoological park.

What’s special about the San Francisco Zoo? It’s one of the few zoos adjacent to a coast (with views of the Farallon Islands on a clear day!) that also maintains a parklike setting. We’re often complimented on our gardens, which intentionally reflect the conservation zones of our animal habitats.

What challenges does the zoo face today? While not unique to the San Francisco Zoo, the higher cost of living in the Bay Area impacts both family visitation and employee retention rates. This dynamic recently led to lengthy and complex labor negotiations in the Bay Area, including here at the zoo between management and the Teamsters Union that represents a majority of zoo employees. More unique, however, is the frequent closures of the adjacent Great Highway for sand removal and recreational use, which makes access to the zoo problematic.

The zoo shut down during the pandemic; how did that affect the animals? We’re convinced the animals missed the social dynamic provided by our visitors. For example, during the pandemic, when I was only one of only a few people on the grounds, the animals were very interested in my movements, and our female orangutan would even make a gesture that resembled a human “blowing a kiss” to me!

What do you say to people who want to do away with zoos all together? I believe we have a common interest in protecting animals, and at the San Francisco Zoo, we also have a focus on saving species. Indeed, 14 of the species in our care have been listed as “critically endangered,” meaning that their species will not survive in the wild without human intervention. In other words, zoos like ours have become sanctuaries of safety for these species.

Tell us about the zoo’s conservation efforts.

Conservation is a pillar of the zoo’s mission statement, and we embrace conservation in everything we do, from saving animal species, both locally and globally, to embracing “change” in human behavior. In fact, in 2023, the San Francisco Zoo received the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce’s Excellence in Business (Ebbie) Award for conservation in recycling and waste management.

What is your favorite animal or exhibit?

I truly enjoy all of the zoo’s animals and appreciate each animal’s role in biodiversity, from our multicolored tarantulas to our spectacular snow leopard. In terms of the zoo’s exhibits, each one also has a unique beauty and purpose, but like many San Francisco Zoo visitors, I agree that our African Savannah is one of the best in the country.

Any future projects at the zoo you can tell us about? I’m very excited about our plans to expand the zoo’s Madagascar Center, which will be home to four critically endangered lemurs, as well as other vulnerable species unique to the island. It will also feature a three-story baobab tree with ocean views and live insects. We also recently expanded our Asian conservation efforts with the arrival of Mongolian horses that were once extinct in the wild.

What is the most rewarding part of your job? When our zoo can heal, either by providing a home to an animal or hope to a human, I’m rewarded and humbled. On those days, it’s no longer a job but a privilege.

Devoted to Success

Every entrepreneur knows running a business comes with perks and headaches of being your own boss. Combine that with a partner who is your mother or daughter, and you’ve got an unshakeable formula for success.

Conventional wisdom among MBAs used to forecast the demise of family businesses by the third generation, but don’t tell that to the women entrepreneurs in Marin. That old nugget, it turns out, is false.

Family-run businesses have a distinct advantage, according to a 2021 Harvard Business Review article. These types of owners focus more often on resiliency rather than rapid growth, and adapt better to changing circum-

stances. In Marin, 19 percent of all businesses are owned by women, according to 2017 census data. Perhaps that number should be higher — in a recent Forbes article, women entrepreneurs were found to outperform men. Part of that is attributed to their desire to contribute to society. “Most female founders are motivated by intrinsic factors like autonomy and making a difference,” the author notes.

All over Marin are thriving women-led businesses that have lasted for decades. These powerhouse pairs inspired us.

“I’m not a morning person, and I’m not ready when I get a call at 7 a.m. about work,” Magda admits.

Despite minor conflicts, working with her daughter is the best part of her life, Lydia asserts. “She’s an amazing child, who pulls up her sleeves and gets to work,” she says. “I’m always in awe to see her around our clientele. She’s so wellrespected.”

Lydia and Magda

Lydia Sarkissian has been in the luxury real estate business for more than thirty years. Originally from Jerusalem, she came to the U.S. in 1980 and worked for a travel division of Neiman Marcus. She switched to real estate for the flexible hours, and has been with the same agency ever since, although the name has changed a few times.

Her daughter Magda Sarkissian, after two years with SB architects, joined her mother at Golden Gate Sotheby’s International Realty when she was twenty-five.

“The first year was challenging! I was mothering her too much, bringing her lunch,” Lydia says with a laugh. “It was embarrassing. I had to stop mothering her in front of clients.”

Magda credits her growth with the insights she gained through travel and attending Burning Man. “I developed my voice over the years, and got more comfortable,” Magda says. “We have the same intentions, the same goal.”

Mother and daughter work together on business development and reaching out to clients. Magda does more of the marketing as well as handling stagers and inspectors. The division of labor is often shared. “Sometimes the lines get blurred,” Magda said. “She has more high energy, years of wisdom. I create peaceful environments. I’m more calm and methodical.”

Occasionally they get on each other’s nerves. “I don’t want to hear ‘Mom, calm down, it’s not a big deal’ when I’m all hyper,” Lydia says.

The respect goes both ways. “She’s able to straddle male and female energies very well, to get to the point in a soft way,” Magda says of her mother. “She gets people. She loves the challenge of thinking outside of the box and works to find a solution.”

The duo doesn’t quite agree on who is in charge. “We’re the bosses of the things we own,” Magda explains.

Lydia has a different view. “Magda is the boss,” her mother says, laughing. “She gets me to do what she wants me to do!”

Mama and Lisa

Kitti’s Place restaurant, a Sausalito classic and frequent gathering place, was founded in 1996 by the Suthipipats. It’s been a family operation since the beginning, named for husband and father, Kitti. Payao Suthipipat, who goes by Mama, takes care of all the food preparation and cooks every single dish made to order. “I like to say that my mom is the brain and the heart of the place,” says her daughter Lisa. “I am the arms and the legs, keeping things running.”

Lisa, who has a degree in international business, runs the front of the house, goes shopping and does everything else in between.

She considered working as a “big-shot” business person but has never left the restaurant. They serve classic Thai food as well as vegan-friendly and Thai-influenced Californian dishes.

She’s inspired by her mother. “My mom is a very strong person,” Lisa says. “She shows me how hard work pays off and to never give up.”

Mama, who moved to the U.S. from her native Thailand in 1983, appreciates that Lisa can handle the day-to-day stress. “She is very calm in hectic situations,” she says. “She’s focused when there are a lot of things going on.”

They’ve learned to work together. “I tell her to speak less and do more,” Mama says. “Action speaks louder than words.”

It drives Lisa crazy that her mother never stops working or takes a full day of rest. “She has lots of energy and is always moving all the time,” says Lisa. “She’s an Energizer bunny.”

Their relationship has evolved over the years, shifting to more than mother and daughter to partners. “Now I listen and talk less, and let my daughter make most of the decisions,” says Mama. Lisa laughs and says there’s no doubt who is the boss: “Mama, of course.”

Eva and Eva

Eva Claiborne worked in her native Hungary for over ten years, after earning her master aesthetician certification. When she moved to the United States, she found too many of the skincare products were “over perfumed, (with) too many chemicals.”

She created more natural products, and works often with dermatologists and plastic surgeons. “(Products are) often missing the calming and soothing ingredients that rehabilitate the skin,” she says. Her eponymous beauty and wellness clinic has been in Tiburon for over thirty years.

It was a dream, she says, to have her daughter follow in her footsteps. Both women love to share the story of young Eva, massaging her dolls after kindergarten, waiting for the work day to end. “She was amazing, working her little fingers,” her mother recalls.

Eva Temby, whose day job is as an owner’s representative for highend real estate construction, joined her mother’s business two years

ago when she earned her aesthetician certification. She specializes in teen facials and her mother works mostly in anti-aging, providing pre- and post-operative care for skin.

“I learned from my mom, she’s one of the best,” says Eva T. “I respect her so much. She’s so talented and an amazing teacher.”

Working together is easy and wonderful, they say. “We are best friends,” Eva C says. “In the treatment room, I’m not her mother. I’m her teacher.”

Eva T. was drawn to her mother’s work during the pandemic. “There’s something magical about working on someone, pampering them and having them relax and rejuvenate not only their skin but also their well-being,” she says. “I didn’t think I would fall in love with the industry as much as I did.”

“I love her passion and I love her heart,” Eva says of her daughter. “It’s more than a facial. She works with her hands, her heart, her soul.”

Although they say they don’t boss each other around, her daughter is clear about who is in charge. “Of course she is!” Eva T. says with a laugh. “She still tells me what to do. If I’m feeling sick, she asks, ‘Did you take your vitamins, are you eating?’”

They work in harmony, Eva T says. “The closeness and openness we have — I hope every mother-daughter shares that bond.”

Julianna, Judy and Caitlyn

Julianna Foris, originally from Budapest, came to the U.S. in the 1970s. She and her husband Thomas and daughter opened Julianna’s Fine Jewelry in Corte Madera in 1985. The couple already had a successful wholesale gold chain jewelry business; their daughter Judy White, who studied business in college, was a welcome third partner in the family-run business.

The business has continued into the next generation. Judy’s daughter and Julianna’s granddaughter Caitlyn Fung joined in 2012. Caitlyn, who majored in English and film, realized she didn’t want to live in Los Angeles. “I started really liking working with my mom,” she says, during the years her husband was finishing his degree. “And then twelve years passed!”

Julianna, Judy and Caitlyn share the job of buying jewelry and watches, but they divide up other responsibilities. Judy runs the dayto-day business of the store as well as the custom designing of one-ofa-kind pieces. Caitlyn is their luxury watch expert.

Julianna works with her special customers and handles most of the payables. “Selling or making special occasion pieces for customers is our favorite part of the business,” she says.

Judy loves the creativity involved in custom jewelry, too. A few memorable pieces include a wedding band that the bride wanted to look like confetti with tiny gemstones. For another couple who wed on 8-8-88, Julianna and Judy created an anniversary present of a four-sided pendant with eights that looked like infinity symbols.

“My favorite thing is helping close friends and family pick their engagement rings and being a part of that special moment in their lives,” says Caitlyn.

Julianna is still respected as the matriarch of their family business. “It’s very rewarding to be with my family every day as well as challenging at times,” Judy says, acknowledging that they argue sometimes. “Each of us tries to get our own way!”

Julianna is impressed by how her daughter has run a successful business for almost forty years. There’s one thing that amazes Judy about her mother. “She has the energy of a 30 year old!” Judy says.

Caitlyn doesn’t take for granted working with her mother and grandmother. “It’s absurdly cool to be a part of a successful, all-female-run business,” she says.

“It’s an amazing experience!”

POWERFUL ARTISTRY POOL

No matter what you call it — water ballet, synchronized swimming or artistic swimming — Marin's connection to this Olympic sport is stronger than ever.

A flyer posted on a downtown Mill Valley billboard was all it took to reignite Carey Clahan’s dormant passion for synchronized swimming. Clahan, a Mill Valley resident, started swimming at eight years old at the Santa Clara International Swim Center, a club renowned for producing Olympic swimmers such as diver Greg Louganis and, more recently, Michael Phelps and Katie Ledecky. After winning the Olympic junior team championships for the sport in the 1980s with the club’s synchronized swim team, the Santa Clara Aquamaids, Clahan hung up her nose clip, worn out by the relentless pace of practices and meets.

Some 35 years later, in 2023, as Clahan stepped away from her business, Laughing Glass Cocktails, and sent her youngest child to college, she found herself in between roles, uncertain of what came next. “I called the number on that flyer,” Clahan says.

MARIN | MAY 2024 41 SUBCULTURE

Synchronized Swimming or Artistic Swimming?

Known as water ballet when Esther Williams was swimming in the 1940s and ’50s, the sport, which Clahan likens to running a marathon while upside down, underwater and holding your breath, became synchronized swimming and is now known as artistic swimming. The name change is thanks to the sport’s governing body, World Aquatics. At the same time as the name change, “they made the sport more technical,” says Christine Schroeder, founder of Redwood Empire Synchro, and the swim coach whose phone number was on that flyer.

Schroeder likes the sport’s new name for its ability to capture the athleticism and different types of swimming the sport entails. Technical routines require specific elements to be performed in a certain order, while free routines are judged on difficulty of the swimmer’s moves as well as on artistic impression. A newer category, acrobatic artistic swimming, includes moves like tossing, lifting and flying. “It’s gymnastics in the water,” says Schroeder, who notes that the changes make the sport more fun to watch. Yet another change made the sport more inclusive. Formerly only for women and girls, artistic swimming is now open to men and boys.

Beyond these changes, the lack of American participation at the sport's most visible platform, the Olympics, is one reason for declining interest in the sport in the U.S., despite massive interest and participation in most other countries. In fact, the United States has not sent an artistic swimming team to the Olympics since 2008, and an American team hasn’t medaled in the sport since 2004. All that changes this summer. In their final opportunity at the World Championships in Doha, Qatar, in February, the U.S. qualified and will send a team to Paris. Watch for them as they compete in Duet and in the eight-person Free Team events.

A Through-Line from San Francisco to Marin and Sonoma

The sport’s history in the Bay Area can be traced back to at least the Esther Williams years. That’s when, in 1956, Marion Kane Elston launched the San Francisco Merionettes water ballet club, and a short time later at 12 years old, Chris Schroeder joined their Santa Rosa squad. “The sport was so much different then,” says Schroeder. “We focused more on artistry and grace. Now you hold yourself upright and perform athletic jumps with eggbeater — like water polo players do. We balance upside down, do spin moves and rocket boosts with pure upper body strength. Then we pop up and smile and try to make it all look easy!”

Interesting to note, touching the bottom of the pool is never allowed and would lead to immediate disqualification in competition.

Terra Linda resident Schroeder began artistic swimming when she was 12 and swam with Kane’s Santa Rosa squad. Though she no longer teaches water exercise classes at the Marin YMCA, Schroeder continues to swim with old friends, such as Nancy Weiman, who swam with Schroeder in college in San Francisco (and is Masters Chairman for USA Artistic Swimming), and new friends, such as Clahan. She began coaching artistic swimming to kids in Marin in 2000 and Masters swimmers in 2006. The Masters club practices two to three times a week, usually at College of Marin’s Miwok Aquatics Center in Indian Valley, and draws swimmers from as far away as Pacifica and Walnut Creek.

Though not everyone who swims with the club decides to compete — and there is no club requirement to attend any meets — Schroeder and Clahan teamed up for the duet competition in August at World Aquatics' Masters Championship in Kagoshima, Japan, nabbing silver in their age group. Clahan took home bronze

for her age group (50–59 years old) solo, Weiman took home the gold for the 70–80-year-old cohort and Schroder won silver in that category. At the 2023 Nationals meet in Tucson, Redwood Empire Synchro raked in the medals and awards, earning the High Point Trophy for the most points won by any team at the event, a repeat of 2022’s success.

Who Can Be an Artistic Swimmer?

Artistic swimming, like other sports, is open to athletes of all ages. Schroeder, also a swim coach and lifeguard at Miwok Aquatics Center, notes the youth program, Aqua Marin Synchro, is open to anyone 20 years old or under. The Masters program is open to anyone of legal drinking age.

No previous experience is required. Both Aqua Marin and Redwood Empire Synchro are open to swimmers of all ages and abilities. “We meet them at their level,” says Schroeder, who is always on the lookout for girls and boys of all ages to create beauty in the water.

While Schroeder works to find and train the next generation of swimmers with Aqua Marin, the Masters club, coached by Aurore Simonnet, includes former gymnasts and golfers, ballet dancers and runners, and plenty of people who just love to have fun in the water. “We have swimmers who come in their 30s and 40s looking to learn a new skill,” Schroeder says.

The benefits are many. Most come to swim for fitness, nearly weightless movement in the water and camaraderie. Some swim to travel and compete. Artistic swimming involves being a part of a community, working together to, as Schroeder puts it, make something fun and beautiful. “I always feel better when I get out of the pool,” she says. Clahan confirms: “It’s relationships and team camaraderie. And I’m in the best shape that I’ve been in for a long time. It’s joy.”

Braving New Heights

Taking a leap of faith is easier when supported by the wings of passion. For Miranda Maas, a former champion diver and licensed therapist, that plunge came in 2021 when she set out to build a non-profit diving program that would challenge norms and change the future of club sports in America.

Maas created Dive Lab, based out of the worldclass facility at the College of Marin, to not just increase access to the sport of diving, but to prioritize a holistic athletic journey focused on people rather than podiums. Having seen first hand the effects of prioritizing athletic success over personal development, she knew she was the right person to change the narrative. “Happy and healthy athletes have the most success in and out of the pool. And they are the ones that go on to change the world,” Maas said.

Through instruction in diving, mindfulness, strength, conditioning, circus skills, and more, Dive Lab has developed a program that benefits and captivates everyone. Participants range in age from seven to 77, which creates a unique atmosphere for training and learning. “Our masters divers get to show what staying active and healthy through life looks like and our younger kids bring an energy and joy that inspires and motivates everyone.” This integration is just one reason why Maas and Dive Lab have become a fixture for opportunity and community in the North Bay.

HELEN ABE

Helen Abe was born and raised in San Francisco. Her immigrant parents worked hard and sacrificed to raise a large family. They taught their children the importance of living within your means.

“My mother literally saved pennies and proved that it’s not what you earn, but what you save that matters”. Helen said.

With strong values, Helen set out to achieve her financial objectives while helping others to achieve their financial dreams. She makes it a point to listen and to acknowledge each person’s concerns and circumstances. Her approach is to keep it simple, understandable and tailored to each individual.

Some people are comfortable working with a woman; although less than 20% of financial advisors are women. Many widows, needing help understanding their own finances; have engaged Helen for help after their husbands had passed away.

Helen believes in helping others to live a life that makes them happy. She believes that we should focus on what we want out of life instead of being fearful.

PAIGE PETERSON

Author ~ Illustrator ~ Photographer

The Belvedere that welcomed newly born Paige Peterson in 1955 reads like the setting of a dreamy California childhood but it was Paige’s reality. On the Belvedere Lagoon, she learned to swim and sail, slide down the golden hills on cardboard, walk with her sister Laurie down the old railroad tracks to feed apples, carrots, and sugar cubes to the swayback horse in Blackie’s Pasture, and always headed home when the 4:30 whistle blew.

Paige has written Growing Up Belvedere-Tiburon, and is the co-author and illustrator of Blackie: The Horse Who Stood Still with Christopher Cerf.

She recently illustrated Jesse Kornbluth’s abridged editions of the children’s classic novels A Christmas Carol and Black Beauty. Now co-abridged with him, she’s illustrated The Secret Garden, to be published this fall.

LORI DROURR, DVM, DACVIM CARDIOLOGY

Veterinary Cardiology with Heart

Dr. Lori inherited Max last Spring. It was an unlikely pairing – chihuahuas are not water dogs, and Dr. Lori is a waterwoman. When asked to adopt Max, unknowingly she said, “I do not do chihuahua.” But in Dr. Lori’s world, family comes first so Max soon became family. Unfortunately, Max arrived with a heart murmur and a mouth infection. Max’s diet had been hoagies and pizza – Jersey fare, not California cuisine. Did Max’s diet contribute to this? A board-certified veterinary cardiologist, Dr. Lori examined Max’s heart and had peace of mind knowing the next steps to take.

Here are three things Dr. Lori wants you to know:

1. Heart murmurs benefit from specialized care

2. Grain-free diets are not what the cardiologist ordered

3. Cats have their own special cardiovascular needs

Try the Clearly Explorer Charter with Clear Kayaks, which includes a scenic cruise aboard the 46-foot tritoon Clearly Explorer and then a guided clear kayak tour that launches directly from the vessel. Or breathe in Tahoe’s infinite night skies during the LED Stargazing Tour and paddle in LED clear kayaks. clearlytahoe.com

CHASE THE SUN

Sunrise over Lake Tahoe’s Emerald Bay is worth the “zero dark thirty” hike to secure the view — headlamps are required. Park in the Eagle Falls parking area and either hike up or cross Highway 89 to the area just above where the falls crash down below. Never underestimate waterfalls, don’t try to cross Eagle Creek and stay well away from all the edges. You can also avoid the hike and park in the Vikingsholm Parking Area. Then pick your spot, sit back and watch one of California’s best sunrise views. With the sun up and your parking space secured, it’s time to explore some of Tahoe’s best trails. Hike into Desolation Wilderness to the top of Eagle Falls and beyond to Eagle Lake or head down to Tahoe’s Hidden Castle, Vikingsholm, considered the finest representative of Scandinavian architecture in the U.S. Bring a swimsuit for dip in Emerald Bay. Packing essentials include sunscreen, water, snacks and some bug spray if heading into Desolation Wilderness.

BEACH OFF

Round Hill Pines Beach Resort is the perfect spot to get your beach on. Located in a

protected cove, it’s a favorite with locals for its all-day staying power. There are toy rentals at the marina, a restaurant and a tiki bar serving the beach’s signature cocktail, The Pain Killer, a pineapple, coconut, frozen concoction with a variety of rums, a few secret ingredients and a topping of fresh nutmeg. Come midday, rent a SUP for some lake cruising, and stay for sunset. Situated on the lake’s southeast shore, Round Hill Pines offers a pink- and redtinged display as the suns slips behind the Sierra Nevada. roundhillpinesresort.com

The newest on the Lake Tahoe spa scene is Tahoe Forest Baths, offering authentic Japanese cedar enzyme detox baths. Soft, fermented cedar, rice bran and an enzyme solution sourced from more than 50 fruits, vegetables, mushrooms, seaweeds and grasses generate the heat up to 150 degrees Fahrenheit via fermenting microorganisms. Immersing in the mixture promises to heal stress and anxiety, allowing you to enter a deep state of relaxation.

To recover from outdoor Tahoe adventures, Mountain Soulscape, voted Best of Tahoe since 2017, offers custom massages with affordable time-based pricing in a relaxing boutique spa, located in South Lake Tahoe near the “Y,” off U.S. Highway 50. From deep tissue, sports, therapeutic, to Swedish or reflexology, you’re in good

HANG OUT WITH THE CELEBS IN SOUTH SHORE

The American Century Championship, held annually at Edgewood Tahoe’s golf course in July, brings out some of the biggest stars in sports and entertainment. With participants like Justin Timberlake, Travis Kelce, Patrick Mahomes and Steph Curry, it’s an all-day party. The best time to get autographs, photos and some personal interaction with the stars is before the start of the tournament during the practice rounds. Or rent a boat and come early to anchor off hole 17 and be a front-row spectator to the hottest party in golf. This short par 3 hole is right on the lake, and the music is pumping as celebs often join in with impromptu dance parties, football throws to the crowd and more.

Wolf by Vanderpump opened in Harveys Lake Tahoe in April, next door to Gordon Ramsay Hell’s Kitchen. It’s the newest restaurant by the Vanderpump Rules boss and her partner Ken Todd. A feast for the eyes and the palette with detailed decor and creations like the restaurant’s ganache pine cone dessert that looks like a real pine cone, but with brownie petals and chocolate mousse, it is a must-try.

The extraordinary outdoor amphitheater at Sand Harbor is a summer activity that is a made-for-Tahoe event. The Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival summer performances are perfectly timed with the Tahoe sunsets. It’s best to arrive early so you can enjoy some wine and drink in the views before the performance starts. You can bring your own drinks and charcuterie or partake from the al fresco restaurant on site, Shakespeare’s Kitchen.

With beaches, mountains, nightlife and pampering, Tahoe might just be the place to relax and give zero f---s about anything except what you want to do. Ready to pack?

Hawaii’s French (Laundry) Connection

Thomas Keller trains island chefs, raises funds for Maui.

Two recent French Laundry dinners on Maui provided a tantalizing opportunity for some 160 patrons to indulge while raising funds for the island’s hospitality workers affected by the August fires. They also gave executive chef and restaurateur Thomas Keller the chance to share something else: his knowledge and passion for his profession, already an influence on several top chefs in Hawaii.

“The purpose is not just to prepare

dinner but to establish relationships,” Keller said, in an interview at Hotel Wailea a few hours before the first ninecourse meal. “We’re giving an opportunity to experience what we do. We’re very transparent — we have no secrets. We want to benefit everyone in the industry.”

Although he brought a team of eight from his Michelin three-starred restaurant in Yountville, the staff at The Restaurant at the Hotel Wailea, led by executive chef

Ryan Cruz, were “involved at every level,” Keller said. “It’s really their team that we hope are doing the bulk of the work,” he noted. “We want them to feel engaged. If they’re standing aside, that’s no fun for them. If we can’t embrace ourselves in our workplace, how can we embrace those in our restaurant?”

Jonathan McManus, whose stepfather Bob Freeman created the Michelin-starred Ondine in Sausalito and whose late father John McManus once owned the firedestroyed Lahaina Fish Co., transformed Hotel Wailea into Hawaii’s first-ever Relais & Chateaux hotel and restaurant after acquiring it in 2008. McManus said he first benefited from the wisdom of fellow Relais & Chateaux member Keller when they met in California about 10 years ago while playing golf. “He had just finished the renovation of the kitchen at the French Laundry and I asked him what did he learn that he could pass on for our renovation,” McManus recalled.

He also embraced the chef’s advice on less tangible matters. “We are both passionate about having our younger team think about this as a profession rather than a job,” McManus explained. “Hospitality is truly an art form, and that’s how we approach it.”

For Jonathan Mizukami, executive chef of the Kahala Hotel & Resort on Oahu, the decade he spent at The French Laundry from 2004 to 2015 was the realization of a long-held dream that still influences every aspect of his career. “I used to go to Borders on Maui and look

84 MAY 2024 | MARIN COURTESY OF KAHALA HOTEL & RESORT, OAHU TRAVEL

at The French Laundry cookbook and I knew I just had to work there,” Mizukami said. “I still have that book, and it’s worn out from looking at recipes and pictures.”

While working on the canape station next to Keller, Mizukami said he learned “everything has to be perfect as much as possible,” a lesson he has applied to Hoku’s at the Kahala. “The amount of attention to detail, the amount of thought, the cleanliness of that kitchen — all of that has stayed with me.”

Erin Howard, executive pastry chef at the Ritz-Carlton Maui, Kapalua, worked at Keller’s Per Se restaurant in New York in 2017, when he solicited staff input to

create his Keller + Manni chocolate. “The key thing I took from this was that no matter who you are and how successful you are, it is still important to get everyone's feedback to make the best product you can create,” Howard said. “It takes a team to create a memorable experience.”

John Taube IV, culinary director of McManus’ Private Label Collection, which includes Kaimana Beach Hotel on Oahu and Hotel Wailea, said he plans to bring Keller’s “positive message” to both staffs, summarizing it: “You’re craftspeople and you’re always learning and doing new things. Work on something as though you owned it and one day you will.”

Personalized Medicine is Powerful Medicine

Concierge

doctor Eric Pifer, M.D., reimagines primary care by blending high-tech and high-touch approaches.

Your Doctor at Your Service

A concierge physician is almost like having a doctor in your family. By serving a small number of patients, your concierge doctor is just a phone call away and can be there when you need attention.

Concierge doctors usually offer patients 24/7 access and same-day appointments; some even make house calls. Eric Pifer, M.D., joined Sutter Pacific Medical Foundation to take it a step further. As medical director and practicing physician of San Francisco Concierge Medicine, Dr. Pifer caps his practice at 200 people and offers a wide range of traditional and integrative medicine therapies to provide truly customized and coordinated care.

Time

is Precious

Studies show that people who see a consistent primary care doctor enjoy better health outcomes. But according to a recent report, 26 percent of adults do not have a primary care physician. Dr. Pifer helps navigate today’s complicated health system by combining the art of relational medicine with modern advances to create a new kind of patient-doctor partnership. With increased access, concierge physicians can coordinate patient care with specialists, make hospital visits, get second opinions, and stay current on medical innovations. Dr. Pifer communicates regularly with his patients and prepares personalized annual plans that may include advanced diagnostics, sciencebased lifestyle approaches and wearable health trackers to understand key factors such as diet, fitness, sleep, and stress.

A Holistic Approach

To learn more or schedule a meeting with Dr. Pifer, call 415-600-0811. sutterhealth.org/concierge-medicine

San Francisco Concierge Medicine is a service of Sutter Pacific Medical Foundation.

San Francisco Concierge Medicine builds on standard practices, such as routine tests, by including integrative healthcare, such as acupuncture, chiropractic care, psychotherapy, and functional medicine through a partnership with Sutter Health’s renowned Institute for Health & Healing.

“We call it ‘primary care plus,’” Dr. Pifer says.

To help people live their best lives, the concierge team has created innovative

options, such as an Integrative Metabolic Medicine Program to address weight management and prediabetes.

“Whether a patient has significant needs or is generally healthy, we almost always find something to focus on that’s beneficial and then we personalize their healthcare plan,” Dr. Pifer says. “We’ve got a lot of unique resources that can transform the way people approach their health.”

MARIN HOME

A remodeled bayfront home is a dream come true for a water lover in Tiburon.

MARIN | MAY 2024 107
MAKEOVERS REALTOR INSIGHTS DETAILS
BY MARIO SERAFIN Sailor’s Delight

With its picturesque canals set against a luscious backdrop of open space, abundant waterfowl and sea life, and easy access to a public marina and Tiburon Yacht Club, Tiburon’s bayfront enclave Paradise Cay is made for water lovers. So, when a 1,500-square-foot, two-bedroom, two-bath home with a sunroom overlooking the bay in the community hit the market, it was a perfect fit for a lifelong sailor, even though it would require an extensive renovation.

“The home was rundown, obviously needing repair and a total makeover,” the homeowner says. “The whole house sloped like a boat heeling over, many of the sliding doors leaked, the sunroom glass was fogged up, the kitchen was tiny and not much had been upgraded in 40 years. It was sad, but it had potential.”

After living in the home for a year, the homeowner dove headfirst into a gut renovation with a team that included San Francisco architecture firm Schneider Design Associates (SDA), contractor Dave Mason Building, and Tiburon-based mother-daughter design duo EJ Interior Design. The architect’s challenge was to make the house feel purposeful within the constraints of the existing floorplan, except for reworking the kitchen; the contractor was tasked with leveling the house and executing all necessary changes; and Eugenia Jesberg, principal at EJ Interior Design, and her daughter, Emma Jesberg, helped bring the homeowner’s vision to life — a home celebrating water, light and her own personal style.

windows and skylights were replaced. “The only thing that’s original is actually the ceiling,” Eugenia says. “We wanted to keep the volume, and the homeowner liked the existing color.”

The bayfront location provided the inspiration for the home’s interior design, which reads fresh, tranquil and coastal rather than overtly nautical. Teal factors prominently in the color palette, and wavelike shapes are featured throughout the home, notably in the Fireclay Tile selections. “The pattern of the marine blue backsplash in the kitchen is reminiscent of reflections on water; the greenish-blue tile floor in the primary bath looks like a fisherman’s braid-knitted sweater; and the guest bathroom features a wavy-pattern tile border in navy blue,” Eugenia says.

In the kitchen, the lightcolored quartz countertops and white custom milled cabinetry put the visual emphasis on the water-inspired backsplash. “We wanted the cabinets to appear part of the architecture, so we used more of a wall paneling treatment than a cabinet treatment,” Eugenia says. Providing continuity throughout the home, the white millwork paneling is repeated in the entryway and on the closet exterior in the primary bedroom, as well as on the fireplace surround, where it runs horizontally, a modern interpretation of shiplap.

The team touched nearly every space. To improve the flow of the common area and shift the focal point to the stunning bay view, they moved the fireplace from the center of the space to a far wall. The solarium was rebuilt, and the kitchen got a complete overhaul. In addition, the bathrooms were updated, and all doors,

Across from the kitchen, the rebuilt solarium, which is deliberately void of too many design elements, serves as a multifunctional space where the homeowner plays music, meditates and practices yoga. Artistic accents in the home include a Karen Smidth painting and Ochre Gaia pendant light in the dining room, a Sharon Paster painting in the living room and a knot drape pendant over the primary bedroom desk by San Francisco artist Windy Chien. Indian-inspired block-print textiles lend a bohemian

touch, and the owner’s own collection of half model boats and sailing photos and memorabilia is displayed in guest room.

Transformed, the home is an ideal environment for the owner to enjoy quiet moments of solitude, entertain friends and family and most of all, enjoy life at the water’s edge. “I love being right near the water, feeling the wind and seeing so much open space of sea and sky,” the homeowner says. “The view is my favorite feature, and I appreciate the openness and serenity of the design, along with the lovely colors. The whole effect feels personal.”

LOOKING BACK

You Go, Girls

In the beginning, women weren’t allowed in the Dipsea race.

This year, the Dipsea — Marin’s world-famous footrace — starts in downtown Mill Valley on Sunday, June 9th, heads over Mt. Tamalpais then plunges almost into the surf before finishing in Stinson Beach. Organizers say 1,500 runners will participate with nearly a third of them being women. Yet, it hasn’t always been this way. At its beginning in 1905, women were not allowed to compete in the Dipsea.

Back then, the nation’s Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) maintained long-distance running was “dangerous to a woman’s reproductive health.” And the resulting ban was in effect in 1918, when one George James, aka, “The Sultan of the Dipsea,” organized the first All Women’s Dipsea Hike. It was labeled a “hike” to circumvent the AAU’s rule barring women from long-distance races. The first “hike” attracted 307 entrants, the winner being 19-year-old Edith Hickman, shown in the accompanying photo with a trophy she later donated to a World War II scrap metal drive. Although the hike/race attracted 5,000 spectators (more fans than the men’s race did), it lasted only five years — until 1922. It was canceled, according to historian Barry Spitz, author of Dipsea, The Greatest Race, again due to “public pressures, this time from local church groups claiming that strenuous running was somehow immoral.”

And the Dipsea’s “No Women” ban lasted until 1971. However, in the 40 years following the rule’s abolishment — thanks to a byzantine array of handicaps and head starts — nearly half the Dipsea winners have been women. Among them is Reilly Johnson; a 62-pound, eight-year-old girl won the 2010 Dipsea by edging out Melody-Anne Schultze, a grandmother who had already twice won the event. And Shirley Matson, a veteran Marin runner then in her early 60s, was the overall winner of the 2001, 2002 and 2004 Dipseas. Again, don’t forget the Dipsea’s intricate system of handicapping — which applies to men and women alike. Possibly best to leave final words to George James, 1918’s “Sultan of the Dipsea”:

“From my own observation, I believe that a woman, equally trained and in the same physical condition as a man, is more game, more tenacious and has greater endurance.”

JANE COOK

Exhibition May 3 - June 30 • Artist Reception Saturday, May 4th, 3-5 pm

Jane Cook’s work is in˜uenced, ÿrst by the astonishing beauty of the natural world, but also by the mid-century abstract expressionist and colorÿeld painters, such as Mark Rothko, Robert Motherwell and William DeKooning. Rather than a portrait of nature, she is working with energy, form and movement. There is intention. But the paintings, when successful, are meant to feel like the absence of human intent / the opposite of words.

Robert Green Fine Arts, established 1969, exhibits primarily painterly, abstract expressive work by painters that thoroughly take advantage of the sensually evocative nature of color and form.
