In the Know

Shares Her Top Summer Picks in the City

Q: Favorite summer activities in San Francisco?

A: Music is in the air everywhere because summer in San Francisco is all about festivals, fairs and outdoor concerts! Catch a lunchtime performance in Union Square or Yerba Buena Gardens. Make your Friday night fabulous at Sausalito’s Jazz & Blues by the Bay, with waterfront views and booty-shaking beats. San Francisco’s charming neighborhoods celebrate their unique culture with street fairs throughout the summer. The North Beach Festival showcases both its Italian heritage and literary prominence as the birthplace of beat poetry and independent publishing. Swing and bebop at the Fillmore Street Jazz Festival while strolling past displays of local crafts and tasty treats. Every week there are so many great events that rarely appear on a visitor’s “must do” list. Make sure to ask your concierge for itinerary advice. While planning the best use of your precious time, the concierge can also suggest activities that will lead to unforgettable experiences.

Q: Best family-friendly summer activities?

A: The San Francisco Zoo is right at the Pacific Ocean, with plenty of parking and easy public transit access via the N-Judah Muni Metro. Even many locals do not realize the extent to which this conservation zoo has upgraded and expanded habitats. This delightful resource offers hours of engaging wonder and works to preserve the genetic diversity of endangered wildlife. TreasureFest is a monthly weekend event on Treasure Island that is fun for the whole family. This vibrant hybrid of street fair and flea market offers live music, artisan beer, games, local arts and craft vendors, and purveyors of antiques and collectables. All of this in the middle of the bay, with stunning views of the City skyline from the Bay Bridge to the Golden Gate!

Q: New or under-the-radar spots in the city that can’t be missed?

A: Today’s technology allows everyone to capture breathtaking sights. Some of the most exciting vistas are hidden, tucked away amongst our many hills. If you love to hike, but don’t want to travel outside our fair City, consider exploring one of the hidden stairway walks featured by Sister Betty on her website (sisterbetty. org). Some have been featured in movies and literature, while others are still relatively unknown. All offer unique perspectives and unexpected beauty.

Q: Best places to get a drink with an iconic view?

A: I have two favorite spots that make for perfect, but less typical, crafty cocktails and photos for posting. Mission Rock Resort serves lunch, brunch and dinner with water views that can’t be beat. Located on the bay just south of Oracle Park (Go Giants!) and north of Chase Center (Go Warriors!), it is the perfect spot where locals go before a game or concert, or for a boozy brunch. The back terrace over the water features heaters and awnings for cozy comfort no matter the weather.

Joanna Husk, Chef Concierge of the Grand Hyatt SF on Union Square, has been sharing her love of San Francisco with visitors for 35 years. She is a member of the Northern California Concierge Association, as well as Les Clefs d’Or USA. Les Clefs d’Or is an international professional association of hotel concierges that is represented in over 80 countries, driven to setting new standards for guest service excellence.

Spotlight Free family activities

Summer in San Francisco means an abundance of free family activities. From fun and enriching museums to cultural experiences, there’s something for everyone to enjoy without breaking the bank.

For art enthusiasts, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) offers free admission for families on the first Sunday of every month — an excellent opportunity for parents and children alike to explore contemporary art and spark creativity together!

Another must-visit museum for families is the Exploratorium, located on the Embarcadero. While the Exploratorium does charge admission, there are several free admission days throughout the year, typically on select days during the summer. Here, families can engage in hands-on experiments, interactive exhibits and immersive experiences that blend science, art and perception. From tinkering with exhibits exploring light and sound to marveling at the wonders of physics, the Exploratorium offers endless opportunities for discovery and learning.

Over by City Hall, the Asian Art Museum has created special Target Sundays family programming. Free admission on the first Sunday of each month features storytelling and yoga sessions.

Another unique attraction that won’t cost a dime is the Cable Car Museum, located at the foot of Nob Hill on Mason Street. Learn about the history and mechanics of San Francisco’s iconic cable cars through fascinating exhibits and displays — you can even see the giant wheels and cables that power the city’s historic cable car system in action.

For nature lovers, it doesn’t get much better than the Randall Museum. A hidden gem nestled in the heart of San Francisco’s Corona Heights Park, this free museum has a range of interactive exhibits and programs focused on science, nature and the arts. Explore the museum’s live animal exhibits, participate in art and ceramics workshops and enjoy stunning views of the city from the surrounding park.

For a taste of San Francisco’s unique culinary history, families can visit the Golden Gate Fortune Cookie Factory in the heart of Chinatown. While the factory itself is small, visitors can watch the fortune cookies be made and even sample some freshly baked treats. It’s a fun and delicious way to experience a slice of local history.

Lastly, the Cartoon Art Museum next to Ghirardelli Square provides a delightful experience for families interested in the art of animation and comics. The museum typically charges admission, but has free admission days throughout the year, typically on the first Tuesday of every month. Families can explore a vast collection of cartoons, comics and animation artwork, and participate in workshops and special events.

Whether it’s delving into the world of contemporary art, experiencing the wonders of science or discovering the city’s rich history and culture, there’s no shortage of memorable experiences awaiting families in the City by the Bay.

Spotlight

San Francisco and Marin County Parks

San Francisco and Marin County boast some of the most breathtaking and diverse parks in California. From rugged coastal cliffs to lush redwood forests, these parks offer outdoor experiences for nature enthusiasts, hikers, picnickers and families alike.

Golden Gate Park stands as one of San Francisco’s crown jewels, spanning over 1,000 acres and offering a vast array of attractions — fun fact: it’s bigger than New York’s Central Park! Visitors can stroll through the Japanese Tea Garden, explore the California Academy of Sciences or admire the exotic flora at the Conservatory of Flowers. There are also countless lush paths for biking and jogging, as well as serene lakes and meadows perfect for picnics or leisurely walks.

North of Golden Gate Park lies the Presidio, a former military base turned national park. With stunning vistas of the Golden Gate Bridge and the Pacific Ocean, the Presidio offers miles of hiking trails through towering eucalyptus groves and coastal scrub. Visitors can explore historic sites such as the Spanish-era El Polín Spring or experience prime dining spots like the lauded Dalida. The park also features the stunning Presidio Golf Course and picnic areas, making it an ideal destination for outdoor types seeking natural beauty and historical intrigue.

The new Presidio Tunnel Tops is a big deal for a big reason. Beyond views — there are many to be had —

there is also a sprawling playground, trails and public lawns, the Presidio Pop Up with food celebrating diverse cultures and Il Parco, an Italian-ish restaurant offering pizzas, soups, salads and sandwiches available for sitdown dining or grab-and-go. Presidio Tunnel Tops is built on and around the Presidio Parkway tunnels — hence the name — making it easy to walk from the Presidio to the park’s waterfront at Crissy Field.

Experience the majesty of California’s coastal redwood forests across the Golden Gate Bridge in Marin County at Muir Woods National Monument. Named after famed naturalist John Muir, this enchanting sanctuary features towering redwoods that have stood for centuries, some reaching heights of over 250 feet. Visitors can wander along well-maintained trails that wind through the forest, among the trees to Cathedral Grove, Bohemian Grove and along Redwood Creek. Make sure to make a reservation before visiting!

North of Muir Woods lies Point Reyes National Seashore, with just over 100 square miles of pristine coastal wilderness renowned for its rugged cliffs, sandy beaches and abundant wildlife. Here you can meander through coastal bluffs and verdant meadows, keeping an eye out for tule elk, harbor seals and migrating whales. It’s also a great spot for birdwatching, kayaking and beach days, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the beauty of the Pacific coastline.
