esigners at New York Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2017 produced a range of very pretty silhouettes with cutouts, bold colors, neons and see thru material. TAORAY WANG China's Leading Desginer Conquers New York

ang Tao, is one of China’s most celebrated and accomplished designers and a pioneer of contemporary Chinese women’s fashion. Over the past two decades, Wang Tao has grown from an aspiring designer to one of Asia’s most successful female entrepreneurs, launching her namesake brand TAORAY WANG at New York Fashion Week in September 2014. After graduating from the Japanese fashion institute, Tokyo Mode Gakeun, Wang was hand-picked by Junko Koshino, the highly acclaimed Japanese designer, as head designer and awarded five international fashion awards during her tenure. After working in London, she returned to China to become the Chief Design Officer and subsequently CEO for the Chinese fashion house broadcast:bo, repositioning the brand and achieving huge success both in brand recognition and revenue. Largely in part due to Wang’s leadership, Shanghai Ribo Fashion Group, parent company to broadcast:bo, TAORAY WANG among others, is set to receive an IPO on the Shanghai Stock Exchange early next year. An international brand, with its head office in Shanghai, studios in London and New York City and fabrics sourced from France and Italy, “Strength and Femininity” are merged with “East Meets West” to bring you design house TAORAY WANG.

Wang Tao, debuted the brand’s Spring/Summer 2017 collection last month at Skylight Moynihan Station as a part of New York Fashion Week where we sat down with the designer to learn more about her new collection. What is your philosophy for dressing a woman? It is a philosophy but also a politic. My aesthetic is deeply rooted in my own belief in the Taoist principle of ying and yang, masculine and feminine, the balance of the universe. However, this balance of the universe is also part of my universal ideals of equality, of cosmopolitanism. If the question is who am I designing for, then my collection is for a powerful, professional, modern woman “on the go,” but one who’s power does not cancel her femininity but emboldens it. For me, it is the principle of balance, it is important that a woman always dress with femininity; a touch of armored grace. Her clothing should convey this message and I make sure to add details to my designs to show she is not only a strong, confident woman but also elegant and feminine at the same time. She is both. From a practical standpoint of course, fit is also very important to me as I like to have the measurements of my clients so that my clothing can be tailored for the woman, perfectly draped on her body.
What was your inspiration this season? Contrast. During a visit to Stockholm, I was lucky enough to visit the Nordic Museum; the Swedish Design Lab’s Stripes, Rhythm, Direction exhibition was a revelation of dramatic visual contrast which paired the simple avant-garde, even aggressive line of Scandinavian modernism with the ornate august 19th-century architecture of the museum itself. In this sense the “masculine” stripe had to come up to the power of the “feminine” architecture of the museum. Likewise, this season I mixed masculine and feminine; blending seemingly paradoxical elements together, allowing the powerful “architecture” of the woman’s body to determine our understanding of traditionally tailored men’s fabrics. I decided to pair bold pinstripes with delicate French lace; added feminine touches to the masculine Wall Street “power suit” such as beautiful silk fabrics, belted waists and exaggerated wide leg pants to show a woman can never be too bold, or too beautiful.
How does your ethnic heritage play a part in your design? I design for the global citizen and fancy myself that I am one. With offices in China, being educated in Japan, inspirations from Scandinavia, sourcing fabrics in France and Italy, and a design studio in London, modernity and femininity are the watchwords of my collection, but I am very proud of my Chinese heritage. My philosophy of Taoism, of strength in femininity, of grace in the masculine, I hope I have found a way to subtly incorporate my traditions into my modern designs. With that in mind, I have also launched a new signature for TAORAY WANG this season, Made in Shanghai, using 100% silk Jacquard handembroidered linings, trims and details inspired by Shanghai’s traditional 1920’s cheongsam (mandarin gown) hand craftsmanship. The silk is very soft against the skin and helps me create luxury inside and out with my designs.
I call my Spring/Summer 2017 collection Romance in Stripes. How old is the brand; where do you see it going in the next 3 to 5 years? We are a young and thus very ambitious; this is my fifth season and I am very thankful that the brand and collections are doing well. We are opening our first US store and showroom in New York City’s Soho next year with plans to open a second in London where I currently live and have a studio. With our IPO opening on the Shanghai Stock Exchange next year we expect the brand to continue its rapid growth.
Where can our readers purchase your clothing? My collection is sold in Shanghai and Beijing as well as to exclusive clients throughout Europe and the US.
Dan Liu Brings Couture to New York By Christopher A. Pape
ward-winning Canadian designer, Dan Liu, draws his inspirations for DAN LIU and TATSUAKI designs from his Chinese and Japanese heritage. With emphasis on beauty and practicality, his debut knitwear collection was so unique that numerous Hollywood celebrities frequented his first Yorkville store in Toronto. The TATSUAKI women’s line has since evolved into “Funky Couture” while “Elegant Couture” is the perfect characterization of DAN LIU’s line. Both labels often appear with knit, crochet, lace, embroidery and beaded details, and are favored by young executives as its chic yet elegant apparel can be worn from day to night. As Designer-in-Chief, Dan is best known for contemporary dresses and his tailoring that accentuates the female form with a romantic flair. Dan’s versatility can be seen from various themes of his collections. Working from concept to patterns, he incorporates color contrasts, details and wear ability to ensure every piece is perfect from any angle. 36 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com
What is your philosophy for dressing a woman? My philosophy is to dress a woman by trying my best to bring out the best in her in order to show the world how beautiful she is. It's because individuality is important from my point of view, but many people want to look exactly like certain famous celebrities. But if everyone looks the same, that celebrity will not be special anymore. By understanding each woman to discover the best in her and bring out the reality, an ordinary girl can be as pretty, or even more so than a celebrity. What was your inspiration this season? My S/S’17 Collection, “New Path,” is a fresh vision on contemporary women’s wear with tinge of couture. For me it means a new start as it’s my debut independent Spring/Summer line. My innovative ideas are based on getting away from my past lines and moving forward into modernity, but at the same time, during creation of my designs I still keep those main elements that my philosophy is built on - vibrancy and vitality.
How old is the brand; where do you see it going in the next 3 to 5 years? The “Funky Couture” label TATSUAKI has been established since 2002 and it’s available in Tokyo, Hong Kong, Dubai and all major cities in China and Canada currently. DAN LIU label, however, has been developing since 2014 as “Elegant Couture” to aim for the higher-end market with a more mature and sophisticated appearance. The company is planning to open our first showroom/retailer in both New York and Toronto in the beginning of 2017 and expand the business to all major department stores in both the USA and China in the same year too. Which designer - living or deceased - is most influential? There are few designers in my mind that have not only changed the fashion world, but also influenced me to be who I am today. Mr. Giorgio Armani – he is so good in fashion design that I think he’s actually “an engineer of fashion”! His design structure and influence have reshaped both men and women’s wear from the past and to the future. All the details in his clothing are very structural and it’s very presentable. Mr. Tom Ford – He is not only a great designer, but also an incredible marketing leader. He can turn any fashion brand to be the most successful label in the world and beyond. Design is important but packaging and promotions are some of the key elements of success. He definitely manages all of them well. Mr. John Galliano – If you ask me “who’s the god of fashion”? There can be no doubt that Mr. John Galliano is the one I believe is! His designs and his
fashion shows are surely something that only a handful of designers in the world can come close to. He is so inspiring, talented and unbelievably good to the point that you will never be able to imagine what he can do in terms of fashion. If you have seen his past designs and shows with Dior, it would just blow your mind with fantastic results and beyond. How does your ethnic (Chinese & Japanese) heritage play a part in your design? My background certainly plays a major role in my design since Asia has different definitions of both male and female in terms of social status. In general, Asian males more or less would like to be in the dominant group while Asian females want to be more feminine. This is why my dresses intend to be more girly than others. Also, detailing is all we focus on in Asia and that is the reason why I love to design with knits, crochet, lace, embroidery and sometimes embellishments to enhance the detail of each of my dresses. They are my signature in my design and I will continue to use them to make my dresses more elegant. Where can our readers purchase your clothing? Which stores? Oday Shakar Honors His Heritage By Christopher A. Pape
day Shakar debuted his self-titled label in 2009 receiving international recognition when his designs frequented the red carpet on the likes of Camila Alves, Dianna Agron, Sandra Bullock and more. However, it wasn’t until after partnering with entrepreneurs Duraid and Candy Antone to form OCD International, LLC following a two-year hiatus that Shakar was able to move his brand from Southern California to New York and further develop his design concept. The Spring/Summer 2017 NYFW season will see the relaunch of the brand with “Unveiling,” a collection that represents Shakar’s creative evolution. Before pursuing a career in fashion design, Shakar planned to follow in his father’s footsteps and study architecture. Instead, Shakar showcases the geometrical elements and beauty of Middle Eastern architecture by implementing draping techniques and fabrics such as soft silks into his

designs to create sophisticated silhouettes that blend different cultures and backgrounds to reflect a sense of timeless elegance. While the brand is rooted in textiles and classic silhouettes to create forms and lines that accentuate a woman’s figure, this season Shakar turns his focus to designing a cohesive collection of styles to build a more encompassing lifestyle brand that can be integrated into every day. Inspired by his Arab American background, Shakar aims to shine a beautiful light on his heritage by fusing Western and Middle-Eastern influences into his designs to promote confidence, self-expression, social responsibility, and celebration. Using fashion as a platform, the Oday Shakar brand intends to empower women by giving them endless options from which they can shape their own personal style strengthening their sense of individuality and demonstrating their freedom of choice.
What is your philosophy for dressing a woman? I want to create looks that are effortless, empowering and beautiful, that work for any body shape and skin tone. Knowing when to take a risk. I believe a woman should feel empowered by what she is wearing. What was your inspiration this season? The blend of two different cultures. America, where I was born and raised along with Iraq, where my family is from. How old is the brand; where do you see it going in the next 3 to 5 years? The brand was launched in 2009. NYFW was a re-launch after a 2 year hiatus and an opportunity to design more than just red carpet looks, to
design for the everyday woman. I see the brand going into the global markets and opening a flagship store in NYC. Which designer - living or deceased - is most influential? HALSTON. I admired his ability to create stunning garments, in such an effortless way. It was unlike any other designer. Where can our readers purchase your clothing? Which stores? I will be launching with Moda Operandi on October 21st, as well as at select Neiman Marcus stores beginning in February 2017. en have to make difficult choices in life; style doesn’t have to be one of them. Some men are afraid to be fashionable. There is a stigma in the United States, that says if a man spends time on his appearance his masculinity could be questioned. Others fear they are just not good enough: they are too fat, too tall or too short to wear that outfit. The reality is, this fear prevents people from expressing who they truly are. He says he started his business with

his two cousins, Daniel and Michael Karako because he wanted to help men look good and feel better about what they wear at an affordable price. “Men need direction. There are men that can’t shop without their wife,” Sean explained. “They fear if they put the wrong outfit together people will laugh at them. But with a knowledgeable and confident salesman we can put them at ease.” Sean was inspired by his father’s family business that started dressing men in Manhattan more than three decades ago. Sean Karako gave me a glimpse into his world of men’s fashion.
What sets Karako Custom apart from competitors? “Our prices are affordable and we are known for our packaged deals. Our competitors bait and switch. They advertise a price for a suit, when you want to change or add to the suit that’s when they get you. The price goes up. We don’t charge extra for the customization.” What is the average cost of a custom suit in your store? “Depending on the fabric, they start as low as $399 to as high as $2000.” How are you competing with companies that offer to customize suits for their customers online? “No matter how the industry evolves towards technology the personal touch can never be replaced. There are companies out there that offer to customize a shirt for you via the internet but it’s just a gimmick. The customer wants to be pampered; taken care of and you can’t get that on the internet or in a big department store.” What fashion trends are you watching this fall? “Accessories are really big; lapel pins, tie bars, handkerchiefs,” said Sean “The dress code is becoming more casual even in a business environment.
Men are moving towards kakis with a shirt, tie and make everything pop with a nice handkerchief. Then pull everything together with brown shoes and a brown belt,” he added. One thing every man should have in his closet? “A nice blue suit.” One male fashion trend that needs to go? “I don’t think a dress shirt you are wearing with a suit should have a pocket.” One fashion rule it’s time to break? “Navy blue and black don’t go together. That’s been a rule for years. I think blue and black go together especially now when people are wearing navy blue tuxedos with black satin lapels.” Number one rule for men buying clothing? “You can’t have the same print on the same print. ate Moss, Naomi Campbell, and Kim Kardashian are a few of the fashionistas fawning over Morphew, a luxury fashion vintage archive located in Midtown. The Morphew brand, according to co-founders Bridgette Morphew and Jason Lyon, strives to connect the past and the future in style through rich historical concepts. Morphew began life as an archival source of inspiration for designers, including the late Alexander McQueen. “We found this niche in the fashion industry where we were consulting and inspiring fashion designers with vintage concepts,” explains Bridgette. The rare pieces presented by Morphew, which are maintained in perfect condition, come from design houses such as Dior and Chanel, or even 200-year-old Victorian lace gowns. Realizing there was an increasing demand for high-end vintage fashion from a fashion history aware shopper, Morphew opened a showroom. Located on 37th street, they receive in-theknow stylists, designers, fashion enthusiasts and luxury shoppers on a daily basis.
Boasting a print archive of over 6,000 vintage prints, Bridgette states, “Our archive is a library for designers who make us the second step in their design process. The niche pieces and the library we’ve created is vintage; everything here is very rare.” With direct access to such a comprehensive archive, the team decided they had another option to explore – reclaimed and re-done vintage. This led to the creation of Morphew Lab – a place where antique fashion, contextual history, future trends and technology meet, and consumers can purchase vintage inspired, reconstructed pieces that are both forward thinking and ripe with historical references. “We know that these are important pieces of history,” said Jason, “and due to the amazing feedback we have always received, the retail market found us organically, and it was only then that we launched as a whole separate retail venture.” Adding “Our greatest compliment is when someone is shopping and they say, ‘Is this old?’ because they don’t think it’s old because it reads so current,” said Jason. “You can say Valentino’s doing that and so is Cos, Zara and Top Shop, and it’s because we sold it to them."
Both Bridgette and Jason pride themselves in knowing trends years ahead and keeping the vintage pieces in line with modern trends, which, as Jason states, “makes us very different from a lot of vintage dealers who only work with a certain era or idea.” Much like fashion itself, the Morphew brand has grown and expanded. “Five years ago, everything we were buying was late 70s, early 80s, Japanese minimalist designer pieces like Issey Miyake and Comme De Garcons, and we love that stuff but we have moved towards a different vibe because that’s what happening in fashion.” They’ve displayed this transition in Art Southampton, where they showcased their collection at the McNeill Art Group booth.
As for their ideal shopper, Bridgette and Jason agree that their leading lady is one who knows what she wants and pushes labels aside. “They say you can buy fashion but you can’t buy style,” says Jason. “Our consumer is a woman who knows and loves style. She’s a fashionable woman, but she’s not a fashion buyer. To her, a label doesn’t matter.” This idea is refreshing, since the idea of owning a piece from a high-end label is what often appeals to customers the most. At Morphew however, designer labels don’t lead the conversation. As Jason says, “We sell designs first, and designers second.”

Ella McHugh And Her Luxurious Handbags

he most captivating, carnal, and indeed key element of alluring design throughout time has been the silhouette. Whether expressive of flowing curves or bound by modernist angles - form does not follow function - it determines style and success, in fashion. It is, if you will, the essential coda of each designer’s expressive signature; the je ne sais quoi of the corset, cocktail dress, or curvature of the stiletto, or, for emerging designer and third generation accessories connoisseur, Ella McHugh, of the clutch, carry - all, or top handle bag. “My designs begin with the silhouette,” explains Ms. McHugh, enthusing: “Every silhouette in my collection is named after an influential woman in my life, including my mother Elizabeth.” Indeed, for this Yale graduate, who grew up between Locust Valley, Long Island and Manhattan’s West Village, a love affair with design is also a family trait. She reminisces, “From a young age, I was inspired by my grandmother. An opera singer and surgeon, she was always impeccably dressed with a complete outfit - including handbag - for every occasion, often changing up to five times a day! My mother, an antiques dealer, has exquisite taste. She inherited her mother’s love for accessories and passed it on to me.” Despite such an auspicious heritage, it would be years before Ella would find her true calling. Trained as a lawyer, the successful corporate attorney toiled over countless contracts before coming to the realization that her passion lay elsewhere. It was a discovery made on shores as exotic as the accessories, which now bear her name: “Strolling the waterfront in Shanghai, I realized there was no time like the present.” She further notes, “I received resounding support from people I respected, including the venerable designer Kasper. His support for my design ideas encouraged me to pursue my dream career.” After honing her skills at New York’s Fashion Institute of Technology, and interning at Marc Cross, Ella launched her eponymous brand in 2011 with her first collection hitting stores in spring 2013. 56 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com
The devil, however, is still in the details. “My experience as a contract lawyer has proven to be a huge asset in my design career – a pleasant surprise. Both jobs require examining every little detail. While the particulars are different… the end result is making sure everything is perfect.” Perfection means the employ of the finest third generation Italian leather craftsmen, as well as perpetual journeys for this avid traveler to pair a flawless silhouette with the most luxurious materials in elegant and unexpected combinations, where “the semi-precious stones are the final touch.” Extravagance is not limited to the purses’ exterior. emember when getting a cosmetic procedure was referred to as “going under the knife”? Well, it’s now time to leave that drama at the door. The face of plastic surgery appears to be getting a lift of its own. In the last decade, the industry’s leading doctors are noticing a trend: patients are taking the “less is more” approach.
Dr. Tehrani, who completed his general residency at Mount Sinai Beth Israel and finished his plastic surgery residency at Kansas University Medical Center, says the view on breast augmentation is headed in the same direction: “I’m seeing patients downsizing breast implants and going for the more natural look, and now we have more options available that weren’t available 5 years ago.”
“Nobody should notice that you ever did anything to them. They should always be guessing whether or not the surgical procedure was done. Be able to look at them and say wow this person looks really good. I’m not sure exactly why but they do,” says Dr. Kevin Tehrani MD, FACS, a board certified plastic surgeon at Aristocrat Plastic Surgery and MedAesthetics. But, he says, it’s not as easy as it sounds. Dr. Tehrani explains that to accomplish that goal — to achieve that that subtle effect — it takes a certain level of skillset: “Whether it be injections, non-surgical procedures or surgeries, if you lift, fill, tuck the right way, people shouldn’t know the telltale signs of a procedure done to them.”
Who is leading the charge on this new trend? Who do you think? Where are the trendsetters in any industry? New York. No question. “We live in an area where patients are not very in your face. Things are a little different when it comes to breast augmentation in L.A. or Florida. The augmentations are a lot larger and in your face. New York people tend to be a little bit more conservative and I think that transcends into doing multiple smaller things until the point where you need to do something surgical,” says Dr. Tehrani. He takes that same approach when he consults clients who come into his office thinking they need a facelift just because they turned a certain age. October 2016 | 65

“It used to be when you turned 50 years old, you got a facelift and now I’m a firm believer that that probably shouldn’t happen until you’re in your early 60s or later depending on what your anatomy is like.” Dr. Tehrani, who has been practicing for 13 years, says that can make all the difference between either looking refreshed or being pegged as someone who got the “New York yank.” Tehrani tells us why getting a face lift prematurely starts a patient on the path to the latter side of the spectrum: “You do it when you’re 50 and then when you’re 60, you do it again and when you’re 70, you do it again and that’s when things start looking done.” He tells his clients who come in for consultations that their best bet is one and done. “I believe you should do a facelift once in your life and then you age gracefully from that point on.” But that doesn’t mean there’s nothing you can do in the meantime. In fact, Dr. Tehrani says one of the keys to postponing your facelift deadline is to do the little things in between: “The way you get there in between in your 40s and 50s is maintenance in between. You do some Botox, some fillers, some skin care.” The “Less is More” trend in thinking doesn’t stop there. Dr. Tehrani says it also influences patients’ expectations in terms of recovery: “Patients are expecting less downtime. They’re expecting less of a burden in terms of their social life.” The market is responding. “I used to do a lower body lift, which is a big procedure to lift your legs like a stocking, in a hospital and now that’s something that we do outpatient. It’s a procedure that in the past 10 to 15 years has dramatically improved,” says Dr. Tehrani.

He says most patients have a week, maybe two weeks maximum to take off from work to recover from a procedure and part of his job as a plastic surgeon is to find the right solution that works with his patients’ schedules: “I think what’s happening overall is the need for minimally invasive procedures.” He says, in many cases, advancements in technology have made that possible and he wants to be at the forefront of those innovations. “I’m an early adopter. I’m usually first to get something that’s available or first to be in the trial for the new thing that’s coming out. I’m always looking for the next best thing.” It sounds like the next best thing in cosmetic surgery isn’t too far away from becoming a reality. “I recently did a study on breast augmentation which basically removed the need for any pain medications after surgery.” Dr. Tehrani says it’s not only possible. It’s inevitable. It’s clear he’s passionate about his work: “I have always enjoyed aesthetic forms and being able to achieve them either in terms of the reconstruction or enhancements aesthetically. My initial exposure was sculpting and architecture which continue to be points of interest.” But beyond his cutting-edge approach to breast augmentation, lifts, contouring, sculpting, liposuction, and other cosmetic procedures, Tehrani says one of the areas of his practice that is the most rewarding is the work he does pro bono. He is the Chief of Plastic Surgery at SUNY Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn where he performs breast reconstruction surgery for cancer survivors. “We do breast reconstruction at that center regardless of whether or not they have insurance.” It’s the type of surgery that could affect a person’s confidence for a lifetime. Dr. Tehrani doesn’t think a person’s means shouldn’t decide that, especially someone who has just gone through the fight of their lives. “It’s always a very sad and daunting time for a woman to undergo surgery and have their breasts removed from cancer and if I’m there to bring a glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel for them to know that they’re going to look better after the procedure and hopefully they’ll remain cancer free, it’s a really gratifying feeling.” aristocratps.com

FIFTY Fifty Shades of Deliciousness

ocated at 50 Commerce Street in Manhattan’s West Village, FIFTY is the newest dining destination that has the neighborhood all abuzz. The restaurant’s owner, 27-year-old Alex Kingman, was attracted to this space not only because he has close ties to the landlord (his family owns the building and he grew up in the apartment above the space) but also because former inhabitants of the space were some of the neighborhood’s favorites: Grange Hall, Blue Mill Tavern and most recently, Commerce. Teaming up with Ecuadorian chef Luis Jaramillo, the new-American cuisine menu uses seasonal ingredients but spices it up a notch with bold flavors from South America. The 91-seat restaurant offers a menu divided into various sections: Snacks, Crudo, Veggies and Plates. The Mini Lobster Rolls and Smoked Trout Deviled Eggs are crowd pleasers as are the Beef Tartare and Flake Crudo. Charred Broccoli and Glazed Roasted Beets grace the veggie section of the menu and for the main attraction; the Grilled Hanger Steak and Mediterranean Octopus can’t be beat.

The cocktail menu, courtesy of Cocktail Ditector Darnell Holguin, offers playful and juicy cocktail elixirs such as the “Shiso Sexy” (Brugal extra dry rum, lime juice, watermelon juice, lemongrass, kaffir lime syrup, Aperol and a shiso leaf), “Market G&T” (botanist gin, green chartreuse, cane syrup, orange bitters, tonic and market herbs) and “Fenix” (Lunazul tequila, aji Amarillo, honey, lime, vanilla tincture and a red bell pepper). All are obviously intended to whet your appetite for more things decadent and indulgent. Amaranth From the Mediterranean to Madison Avenue

conic Upper East Side restaurant Amaranth continues to thrive – even after 17 years in the business. Owners Paola Pedrignani and Francois Marchand, who recently marked the Mediterranean Bistro’s Anniversary with a glamorous celebration for over 500 of their most loyal customers, attribute its long-running success to “staying true to their Mediterranean roots and never compromising on quality.” Located just off Madison Avenue on 62nd Street, between Fifth Avenue and Madison Avenue, Amaranth offers a fusion of original Italian food and French food, with a large portion of specialty items imported directly from Italy and France. “We’re renowned for our classics, like our famous Focaccia Robiola, baked in our brick oven and served with Robiola cheese – there would be an outcry if we took this off the menu! But we also constantly evolve,” says owner Francois Marchand. Other fixtures on the menu include the Steak Tartare, which is prepared in front of customers to ensure freshness and the right balance of spices, and the Octopus Carpaccio – fresh, quality seafood from the Mediterranean served on a bed of greens. There are also a number of healthy, light choices served with the highest quality ingredients – like the Whole Maine Lobster Salad, served with radicchio, endive, arugula, cremini mushrooms and citrus vinaigrette. The Pan Seared Nantucket Sea Scallops with mushrooms, braised leeks and lemon white wine sauce always impresses. Amaranth’s pastas are homemade and are available whole wheat and gluten free. The dessert menu is hard to resist – from the Mille Feuille Napolean with mixed berries and crème anglaise to the Cantucci al Vin Santo – a homemade biscotti served with Vin Santo Wine for dipping.

They believe that authentic and delicious Japanese food should be accessible to everyone for a reasonable price. Using fresh ingredients, traditional techniques and attentive service, Nare Sushi could be your next favorite Sushi restaurant in New York City. The restaurant has a nice modern vibe while also offering its guests an intimate and warm atmosphere. The highlight of their menu is the Sushi Omakase. Twelve pieces of sushi and one roll for just $55. The sushi was fresh, authentic and perfectly presented by their talented sushi chefs. I sat at the sushi bar for the full-on Japanese sushi experience and would recommend you do the same. The menu caters to, obviously, sushi lovers but also offers a wide selection of other dishes such as Baby Lamb Chops, Angus Prime Rib Eye and a Duck Breast Steak. There is also a Wild King Salmon Teriyaki (9 oz. of king salmon) that will more than satisfy. recently had the opportunity to indulge myself at one of Manhattan’s superior steakhouse/seafood eateries, featuring the best of both land and sea. Ocean Prime is another one of Cameron Mitchell’s masterpieces. Located in Midtown Manhattan at 123 West 52nd Street it is a welcome addition to the theater district. Having only been to the NYC location I can tell you that it does indeed embody the city’s energy, class, taste and culture with perfection. One must give kudos to the General Manager Zachary Montgomery for implementing and maintaining the organization’s goals and high standards. I would be remiss if I didn’t at least tantalize you just a bit with the outstanding creations of Executive Chef Eugenio Reyes. Chef Reyes has done an exceptional job at introducing local fare, when at all possible, with only the freshest ingredients and creating a culinary work of art for every palate. The

appetizers include Goat Cheese Ravioli, White Truffle Caviar Deviled Eggs, Sea Scallops with Short Ribs and Steak Tartar, just to name a few. You can also choose from the raw bar, or perhaps sushi is more your style. The dinner menu runs the ocean’s gamut from snapper to Chilean sea bass to every cut of prime steaks one would desire, as well as chicken and chops, all tastefully executed. Delectable side dishes, such as Parmesan Truffle Fries, Black Truffle Mac and Cheese and Lobster Mashed Potatoes are some of the unique choices. Dessert has not been overlooked and Ocean Prime is well known for their out of this world, ten-layer carrot cake. here’s nowhere to hide…we are now in full-blown pumpkin season! While people like to laugh about how early pumpkin flavor season arrives – in many cases, before the official start of fall – most of us secretly love the early start. Personally, it reminds me of pumpkin spice, the return of fall, pumpkin picking, and carving pumpkins with friends and family. But what often gets overlooked is how healthy pumpkin is and how it can be used in many of your favorite every day recipes. Pumpkin offers many health benefits. It’s low in calories and has no saturated fat or cholesterol. It is also extremely rich in dietary fiber, antioxidants, minerals, and vitamins. Pumpkins are also very versatile when ripe and can be prepared in a number of ways: boiled or steamed, or roasted with some salt, pepper, and cumin until golden brown on the edges. Smaller pumpkins can be enjoyed in the same way as squash or zucchini. Virtually the entire pumpkin is edible, from the fleshy shell, to the seeds, to the leaves and even the flowers, so it’s about time we looked past the pumpkin spice latte or pumpkin pie for our use of this delicious ingredient.
To start, it’s important to know how to pick a good pumpkin so you can enjoy all of the flavor it has to offer. When choosing a pumpkin, look for a mature fruit that has a woody sound upon tapping, is heavy, and has a strong stem. A pumpkin can be stored for many weeks at room temperature in a place that is well ventilated. If you have already cut open your pumpkin, it should be placed in the fridge where it will keep for a couple of days.

The seeds are also a fabulous addition to many of your favorite foods – you can add them to salad, yogurt, or even rice dishes for extra crunch. The seeds are naturally rich in phytosterols, which have been shown to lower bad cholesterol, so try adding them to some of the foods you eat every day.
As for dessert, pumpkin is extremely versatile. Think beyond your typical pumpkin pie on Thanksgiving. Consider making pumpkin-based cookies with a cinnamon sugar cream cheese filling for a perfect fall snack. Or, put your own spin on traditional flan by incorporating pumpkin – it only requires a few ingredients and about an hour in the oven and you get a fabulous dessert. Bring back that homemade whipped cream for the flan (if there’s any left after your pancakes!) for an extra treat.
Pumpkin is also a great ingredient to use when making pancakes. It’s extremely easy to do and adds a nice depth of flavor to a favorite breakfast food. All you need to do is blend some pumpkin and add it to your favorite pancake mix, along with butter and eggs. Serve with some homemade whipped
The great news is that there are plenty of places to pick pumpkins on Long Island. Take a trip to your favorite pumpkin patch and check out a corn maze or haunted house while you’re there. fter the summer weekends in the Hamptons are over and the Northeast gets colder, escape to warm and sunny Florida. St. Augustine (on the Northeast coast of Florida) is the oldest city in the US with tons of history and charm â€“ 450 years! I was amazed and impressed by the high quality and variety of local restaurants in town. Many types of cuisine are represented in St. Augustine, Florida including seafood, Caribbean and Spanish influenced. The people were very friendly in the shops and clearly enjoyed relaxed living in the town. Upon our groupâ€™s arrival we attended a welcome reception at the Lightner Museum with a champagne toast while watching the sunset sky overlooking Casa Monica Resort & Spa. Local officials also gave us more history about the local attractions. We stayed at the Casa Monica Resort & Spa, a cozy Moroccan-style designed hotel with Spanish influences situated conveniently right on Cordova Street among many restaurants, bars and boutiques.

How do you get a rhinoplasty done right? First let’s answer, what are the most common problems with the appearance of the nose that can be corrected by plastic surgery? I approach rhinoplasty by first looking at what your expectations are for your perfect-looking nose while you are looking at yourself, while I observe you, in a mirror. Most commonly, pretty young women, when looking at their profile, complain about a bump on the nose (prominent dorsal hump) or the nose is a bit longer than desired and, when looking at their face, might add that the tip is a bit fuller (bulbous) than they’d like, but it’s often
What should I do before getting a cosmetic rhinoplasty? Before proceeding with getting treatment for the identified cosmetic concerns to proportionalize the nose relative to the face, you should make sure that your plastic surgeon examines the nose for functional abnormalities associated with the nose, such as breathing difficulty, history of sinusitis, snoring, prior nasal surgery, etc. I often perform an internal evaluation of the nose (endoscopy) and/or obtain a CT scan of the paranasal sinuses to further evaluate nasal and paranasal structures and function. Sometimes these functional concerns are covered by certain health insurance plans.

So tell us in a few words or less what happens with a rhinoplasty? Rhinoplasty re-contours the nose to balance your profile and proportionalizes this central facial feature. Depending on your preference, you may have local or general anesthesia and have the surgery performed in the hospital or in our office. Patients usually go home after surgery. There are no external scars or sutures in most cases. A nasal splint is removed after 5to 7 days. Many patients return to work after the splint is removed, applying makeup to any residual bruising. Patients usually enjoy normal social activities, including physical exercise, after three weeks, but avoid contact sports for six weeks. Why look for “Rhinoplasty King”? Hampton’s Magazine quoted Dr. Pober’s approach to rhinoplasty when he stated: “I focus on the patient’s strongest features when they come into my office. Are you “Healthy”? Eating Right Makes the World of Difference

hat does it mean to “be healthy” or to “eat healthy” or to “live a healthy lifestyle?” This question commonly comes to mind when clients and friends alike tell me they want to “be healthy.” When I ask them what they really think being “healthy” means, I hear the following responses: • Exercising every day • Eating a certain number of calories • Maintaining a gluten-free diet • Starting each day with an almond milk-chia-kale-flax-matcha smoothie • Always avoiding sugar-laden treats • Not eating past a certain time
These types of responses are alarming to me, but I also realize that they are more widespread than not. Our society tends to view “health” as a reflection of food and exercise. To me, health encompasses much more 100 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com
than our daily diets and our exercises habits. Health is also a reflection of sleep, stress, social factors, emotional state, and overall medical condition. When I counsel my clients, I always make sure we focus on the whole picture. I am supportive of their weight loss goals, but I also focus on their mental state and other lifestyle factors. Sure I want to make sure they are eating enough vegetables and getting in some physical activity most days of the week, but I also question their water intake and sleep habits. I want to know if they are “enjoying themselves” or if they feel “deprived” in some areas of their lives. If they are drinking green juice, do they actually like it? If not, don’t drink it! I don’t want them to do certain things just because they “think” they are healthy things to do. To me, being healthy is living a “balanced” lifestyle. Sure it is important to limit your intake of processed foods and fried foods, but it is also important to listen to your body and to enjoy yourself sometimes as well. Being healthy means having the ice cream cone or slice of pizza from time-to-time if that is what you enjoy.
Being healthy means taking a day off from the gym to enjoy a lazy beach day with friends. Being healthy also means taking a challenging boot camp class because you genuinely enjoy it (or skipping that same workout class because you honestly can’t stand it in the first place)! Ultimately, what I am trying to say is that “healthy” has a unique definition for each person and there is no ONE definition of healthy. So if you want to know an expert’s opinion of what “healthy” means, here are a few examples: • Understanding that ALL foods have a place in your diet • Exercising because you enjoy it • Not participating in forms of exercise that you do not enjoy • Eating foods that nourish your body (like fruits and vegetables) and eating foods that nourish your soul (like ice cream and pizza) • Appreciating your body for all that it does for you • Accepting your flaws and not being so hard on yourself • Getting enough sleep each night • Engaging in meaningful relationships
I encourage you to look at the whole picture, not just the food and exercise factors. Remember that “healthy” is not one isolated event, or one individual food choice. Being healthy is about balancing all the pieces of the puzzle so that you not only look, but also feel, your very best.

r. Julia Fedorenko, a naturopath and clinical herbalist, founded True Organic, a line of organic skincare products three years ago. Disliking the pollution that plastic packages cause, Julia came up with completely biodegradable packaging that is very sturdy, but is actually made out of paper. “If you are camping and lose your Bug Stick, Sun Stick or Skin Stick, it boom, disappears, it doesn’t ruin the planet,” she says. “And when you’re finished using it, it doesn’t ruin the planet by going into the garbage and end up floating in the ocean.” This year alone, using the paper tubes kept over 60 thousand plastic containers out of our waste stream. The company’s products were certified organic by the USDA last winter, and in August - the day before we spoke to Julia, in fact - they were declared “EWG verified,” a program designed the Environmental Working Group specifically for cosmetics. Additional products are in development, and the True Organic brand is sold via the company web site, drfedrenko. com as well as on Amazon and in local Hamptons shops, including Marders and Provisions and will soon be in stores in South Florida. The company started in Julia’s kitchen, and now a production is done at a factory in Iowa with a dedicated team and very strict quality control. They’ve also added a fulfillment center in New Jersey, and at the company headquarters in the Hamptons, Julia has brought in a talented group of local women to handle the business. “We do a lot of business meetings while the kids are doing play dates,” she laughs. “While we’re driving, we’re talking, we’re bringing the kids, we’re picking up the kids, and we constantly give each other a hand of support. We’re basically now like a team of five women driving this sailboat.”

ovie star, survivor and American royalty are just a few descriptions for 5'9" stunner Sally Kirkland, a famed actress who garnered the prestigious Oscar nomination and won a Golden Globe and numerous other awards. In a world where there is so much darkness and uncertainty, Sally Kirkland shines her light on so many people. She is a magnanimous force to be reckoned with. Sally is the real deal! As a young child Sally had an affinity for the arts. She enjoyed acting, painting, dancing, and singing. Her mother and namesake was a legendary fashion editor at Vogue and then later Life Magazine. She established Jacqueline Kennedy, Grace Kelly, Audrey Hepburn and Faye Dunaway as fashion icons by gracing them on the covers. Princess Grace invited Sally's mother to Monaco every year. Her mother was a preeminent figure in the world of fashion and helped catapult the careers of many top designers including Dior, Chanel, Betsey Johnson, and others.

At home young Sally endured heartache including sexual lust from her alcoholic father, and she credits her strong faith for carrying her through. Ali McGraw, Lauren Hutton and other famed beauties were always in her home on 89th Street in Manhattan, so young teen Sally, being her motherâ€™s daughter, was determined to make her own mark as 'the most famous actress', a movie star. She received emotional support from her mother; however, her dad preferred that she strive for excellence in her art and sell her paintings. Talented and ambitious at age 17, Sally was a scholarship student and worked with the legendary Jerome Robbins on mime and acting in Italy. While there she starred in Trojan Women with Claire Bloom and Arthur Kennedy. She learned a great deal about acting and likes to say she learned how to act from the Italians. When she returned to New York, she studied acting and speech with famed Uta Hagen at H-B Studio and then later with
Lee Strasberg. She went on to play Jacqueline Kennedy in the off-Broadway play, Fitz and Biscuit. Jackie Kennedy went backstage after the show, and with tears in her eyes, she explained to Sally that she was impressed at how Sally captured her in the performance. Shortly after that Sally went to Hollywood to star in The Sting and The Way We Were. Sally had always been a girl of faith and a devout believer in God. When hurt and rejection hit hard, her faith began to diminish. Sally explains that after losing her faith everything seemed to go wrong. Her world started to crumble. She was heartbroken over an ill-fated romance and rejection in the acting profession... too thin, too tall, not right... none of which was in her control and this wounded her deeply.
Legendary actress Shelley Winters was her mentor and later her Godmother. She taught Sally useful acting secrets. Shelley brought Sally to The Actors' Studio and Sally later brought in Robert De Niro. Toward the end of Shelly Winters life, Sally was her caretaker. Sally also coached stars such as Sandra Bullock, Kathy Griffin, Barbra Streisand, Liza Minnelli and others. Top Hollywood publicist Dale Olson saw the film Anna, in which Sally starred, and worked around the clock to get Sally nominated for an Oscar. When Sally is asked if she has any regrets and would she do it all again. She responds, "My only regret is not having a child, and yes, I would do it all over again."
As a result, Sally became depressed, had a nervous breakdown and in 1966 she tried to kill herself. She was pronounced dead. Sally recalls a beautiful white light and a celestial sound as she experienced a feeling of ecstasy. She saw faces of living people who had hurt her, and she understood the hurt was Karmic. Then Sally heard a voice say, â€œYou can stay, or you can go back and tell others who are in pain about this.â€? She did not see his face, but she felt certain that it was the voice of Christ.
Sally's advice to those in pain and young people from troubled backgrounds is: love others, never do drugs, do service, be a caretaker, calm yourself through painting and other arts, have faith, pray and never give up on your dreams. Sally has amassed a number of Humanitarian Awards. She feels it is most important to hang on to hope and faith, be resilient and never never give up.
She returned, and since that day she has been grateful for her blessings and the beneficent people who helped her along the way. After this experience, Sally found her faith again. She has devoted her life to her acting career and helping others.
Sally Kirkland starred in 250 feature film productions including The Sting, The Way We Were, Ed TV, JFK, Revenge, Best of the Best, Bruce Almighty and Awakened. Look for Sally Kirkland in her upcoming film with Oscar winner Melissa Leo, The Most Hated Woman in America.
Sally certainly had her share of blessings. In the early '60s Sally met Bob Dylan. Their on again off again love affair lasted through the late '90s.

Feast For The Eyes Good Enough to Eat (But Don’t)

he latest exhibit at the Nassau County Museum in Roslyn Harbor, Feast For The Eyes, was inspired by food, and curated by Franklin Hill Perrell with assistance from Debbie Wells, his business partner at The Artful Circle, a group which they co-founded in 2013. (See 25A Magazine August 2014.) All the art on display relates to food of many varieties and how food, restaurants, groceries have inspired artists to create food related works. Folk wisdom says don’t go food shopping on an empty stomach, well the same applies to this exhibit, it will make you hungry! In the main gallery are works by the more well known artists , Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, and Cindy Sherman, to name just a few. Debbie and Franklin named each gallery and this one is Food For Thought, other Galleries include; Just Desserts, Fruit and Flowers, Farm to Table etc. The artworks also are various mediums, from sculpture, oil paintings, photographs and works of 106 | 25A www.25Amagazine.com
photorealism, and included among the many artworks in their own special showcase, are several bejewelled evening bags by Judith Leiber, in shapes of fruits and vegetables, including a bunch of asparagus, a watermelon slice and an eggplant. (see article on Judith Leiber 25A Magazine October 2013). Al Hirschfeld’s wonderful cartoon drawings of celebrities in restaurants, (be sure to look for the Ninas) and Roz Chast’s cartoons from The New Yorker, also add a playful, humorous component to the exhibit. Andy Warhol’s iconic portrayal of a can of Campbell’s soup, is on loan to the exhibit from Museum Trustee Dr. Harvey Manes, as is a photograph by Cindy Sherman of a 1960’s era kitchen. There are several Long Island artists represented in the exhibit, including Frank Olt, Richard Gachot, Susan Cushing, Christian White, Joe Szabo, and Bruce Leiberman.

Artist Susan Cushing ‘s oil painting, which she calls United Nations, depicts a very long table that goes as far as the eye can see, with people of all nationalities. Susan said she feels that “there is a lack of understanding between people, and if we could all have a large dinner party we could get to know each other better.” Susan said she was inspired by the song in the old Coca Cola television ad, “I’d Like to Teach the World to Sing.” A fascinating art installation, on the second floor of the exhibit, was discovered by Debbie Wells. Artist Dana Sherwood made a wooden cart and put all sorts of foods on it, raw meat, fish, a whole chicken, liver, and other foods, then placed it in the Amazon jungle in Brazil for several weeks and filmed the animals and insects as they approached the cart. The installation has the foods she created as sculptures, not the rotting and torn flesh, along with a video showing the progress of the actual feast for the animals. Franklin Hill Perrell is an artist, writer and historian. He was curator at the Nassau County Museum of Art for more than twenty years, working on over fifty major exhibits. As Executive Director of the Roslyn Landmark Society, he was responsible for the historic preservation of several hundred landmarked properties, plus endangered art and architecture. He is a on
the Board of Trustees of the Heckscher Museum in Huntington, and the National Gallery of Bermuda in Hamilton. Debbie Wells has a BFA and an MA from the Parsons School of Design. She is also the Chair of the Board of The Art League of Long Island, which was founded in 1995 as a non-profit organization with a mission to provide a forum and showcase for artists of all ages and abilities. The Art League offers art classes and workshops in painting with oils acrylics and watercolors; sculpture, photography, printmaking, pastels, jewelry making, stained glass, as well as classes for young artists. There is a wonderful exhibit space and a reference library of art books. The Art League of Long Island is located at 107 East Deer Park Road, Dix Hills.
