24/7 Valencia: Could you tell us more about this exhibition of Japanese photography?

Bombas Gens: “Between 1957 and 1972, a radical transformation in the photographic language took place in Japan with the help of a group of photographers who began to develop their work during the postwar period. A renovation that took place in parallel to the great economic, cultural and psychosocial changes of this period, some years marked by a social confrontation, mainly against the American heritage of the occupation.

This exhibition shows a selection of works from the ‘Per Amor a l’Art’ Collection, becoming the most important private collection of Japanese photography of this time outside of Japan.

This Japanese photography exhibition

brings together a selection of images that puts the accent on the artists who participated in the LIVE formation (1959-1961), such as Ikkō Narahara, Shōmei Tōmatsu, Eikoh Hosoe, Akira Satō or Kikuji Kawada, and of the photographers who carried out ‘Provoke’ magazine (Provocative Materials for Thought) in 1968, such as Yutaka Takanashi, Takuma Nakahira or Daidō Moriyama.

The experimental mode in which the images were shown as the product of an era marked by important political events became a phenomenon and a trend that many other artists - inside and outside of Japan - would continue and that is even appreciated today.

Thus, they are shown with works by artists such as Toyoko Tokiwa, Nobuyoshi Araki, Ishiuchi Miyako, Kōji Enokura or Tamiko Nishimura among others.”

AGUA DE VALENCIA

AGUA DE VALENCIA Agua de Valencia was first concocted by erstwhile artist and barman Constante Gil, who started serving it in his bar, the now sadly defunct Cerveceria Madrid in C/ Abadia San Martin in 1959 in Valencia. The bar, with its live piano music and its alcoves and poky corners was a classic of Valencian nightlife, especially through the years of the ‘transition’ to democracy and up until the mid-nineties. Its walls were decorated with Constante’s collection of impressionist paintings ‘Tertulias de Café’ that invariably depicticted people sitting around a table enjoying a jar of the famous cocktail.

So the story goes, a group of Basque salesmen who were regular visitors to Valencia, staying in the nearby Hotel Bristol, would spend their evenings in Constante’s bar and would always order the best house Cava, jokingly calling it ‘Agua de Bilbao’ in honour of their homeland. “In Bilbao the water is as good as this” they would tell him. One evening, getting a bit tired of their banter, Constante said he would surprise them with something a bit different and that’s how he came up with ‘Agua de Valencia’… a mix of fresh

orange juice, white spirits and cava.

In the dark & lonely nights of Franco’s sixties, like the rest of Spain, nightlife hadn’t really taken off in a big way in Valencia. Constante was offering his mixture to customers every evening in his bar but few people had heard of it in other parts of the city. It wasn’t until the seventies when the tired old regime was starting to be openly challenged. Groups of beardy Che Guevara wannabe students known at the time as “Progres” would frequent bars like Cerveceria Madrid to smoke too many Ducados and talk politics. As the Universities were almost perpetually on strike, these largely middle-class revolutionaries had time on their hands to kick- start Valencian nightlife and what was the first obvious signs of a Valencian youth culture.

One of their favourite drinks was Agua de Valencia. It seemed to tick all the boxes. Girls liked it, its name chimed with their political struggle for autonomy, it had a hint of elegance, something more intellectual and sophisticated than beer, it was cheap and it got you drunk. Here was a perfect cocktail

for lefties and artistic types, to be drunk while listening to the music of Maria del Mar Bonet or Raimon.

By the 1980s, Agua de Valencia had become THE drink of the Valencia scene. It was especially popular amongst students as, just like its bastard son, the Cubalitro and the present day Botellón drinking in the street, it was made for sharing. In those days it was relatively inexpensive. You would order a jug and enough glasses for everyone.

Agua de Valencia was available in the dozens of new bars opening up in the Carmen and had quickly spread to other up-and-coming areas of the city like Xuquer, Ciudad Jardin, Cánovas and Juan Llorens.

As often happens with these things, it was the widespread popularity of Agua de Valencia, which finally led to its downfall. Mass sales meant a drop in quality, especially in the spirits used to mix the drink. Freshly squeezed orange juice was increasingly replaced by bottled juice. The centre of the whole ‘Agua de Valencia’ scene had moved to the then extremely po-

pular Café de Paris in the town centre, which also had a branch on C/Manuel Candela. Café Paris had a long list of ‘Aguas’ from anywhere you can think of; Agua de Dublín, Agua de Londres, Agua de Estambul, Agua de Milan even, for some reason, Agua de Leeds. Each of these was a different colour, with impossible combinations of cordials and low-quality alcohol which were to blame for many a Sunday morning bad head in the late eighties and early nineties. Much to the horror of most Valencianos, Agua de Valencia was even bottled and sold in supermarkets. The drink’s popularity had reached its peak and suddenly, during the end of the nineties, it fell out of fashion.

Hector, the owner of La Salamandra, a small bar with a wonderfully welcoming and relaxed atmosphere and a large terrace on a popular corner of Plaza Xuquer, has been a witness to the comings and goings of Valencian nightlife over the last thirty years. He believes that it was mass production that nearly killed Agua de Valencia off: “People realized it was getting more and more expensive and because the bars weren’t taking any care in its preparation and ingredients, it didn’t seem to taste very good anymore. Agua de Valencia is freshly squeezed oranges with the right mix of spirits and half-decent cava, the bars weren’t providing that, and don’t get me started on that bottled stuff they sell to tourists” says Hector.

The drink is still popular in his bar, mostly drunk by couples. For Hector it is important to get the mix right and, according to him, the proportions just don’t work in a big one or two-litre beer jug: “It’s a social drink, but it should only be served in small jugs for two people, if you want more then I’ll make you a fresh jug.” A true purist, he prefers to do the job properly or not at all, he even says if the oranges aren’t sweet enough, it’s not worth making it: “Adding sugar to sweeten the orange juice just shouldn’t be an option”.

The area of the city most associated with Agua de Valencia is the Barrio

del Carmen and if you are only going to try it once, it ought to be in a place like Café San Jaume on C/ Caballeros or Radio City on C/ Santa Teresa or La Cava del Negret, Plaza del Negrito.

They are three of the area’s longest standing bars which typify the old “barrio” and, now that Cerveceria Madrid no longer exists, the first two have strong claims to have been making and selling Agua de Valencia longer than any other bar in the city. Even though demand isn’t what it was in its heyday, they still get through plenty of jugs of the drink.

salt will use freshly squeezed orange juice with sweet oranges, so sugar is not necessary, plus a mixture of good quality white spirits. We were also told never to use orange-flavoured liqueurs like Cointreau or Curacao, as they don’t blend well with the orange juice.

According to the people at San Jaume: “A lot of tourists who have found the bar in a guide or on the Internet come to our place especially to order Agua de Valencia. There are local people who’ve been coming back here regularly since the very beginning to enjoy the odd glass. Also couples often order it or mixed groups of men and women. Men on their own, for example, don’t usually order it and, these days; it’s not a cheap drink, so it’s not so popular with younger customers who can get two or three beers for the price of a glass”.

In the Barrio de Ruzafa a classic place for Agua de Valencia is Cafè Tocado in C/Cadiz, a bar in the heart of the area with live music and theatre whose decoration puts you in mind of a “cabaret” from the ‘La Belle Epoque’. Like all the classic Agua de Valencia bars we’ve mentioned, they go for quality ingredients but this being Ruzafa, unlike the bars in the centre, they don’t attract so many tourists. They told us that although it is still a staple, other drinks have replaced Agua de Valencia in popularity: “It’s normally drunk by groups and couples, usually people over thirty, these days younger people tend to go for more fashionable drinks like caipirinhas or mojitos. Having said that the drink is a classic, we’ve always served it and it’s always been in demand.”

So how do you make it? Every bar does it their own way; some add cava and some don’t. Most places keep the exact recipe to themselves but we did pick up a few tips. Anywhere worth its

VALENCIA WINES

31ST WINE AND FOOD FAIR AND RESULTS FROM THE CONCURSO DE VINOS VALENCIANOS The ‘Mostra’ held annually in the dry riverbed came to a finish on April 29th. Over the previous five days thousands of visitors had experienced the selection of wines, spirits, olive oils, craft beers, artisan cheeses, sausages, breads, chocolates and more that was on offer. All these products originate in the Valencian community and all three provinces were well represented.

Organised by Proava, the not-for-profit agency responsible for promoting the Valencian panoply of gastronomic produce, it is also the time of year for the first part of the Valencian Wines Competition. Unique in Spain, the competition invites bodegas from across the entire Valencian Community and any bodega can enter their wines in around a dozen categories.

A tasting panel is appointed principally

by Proava but on behalf of the

Agriculture and Tourism department, making this a Government sponsored competition. The panel is made up of technical staff from the Denominations of Origin, the wine press, professional winemakers, the Sumilleres association and others.

The competition is now in three parts and for the fair the wines to be judged are whites, rosados, young and aged reds, sweet wines and vermuts.

Sparkling wines and Cava are judged later in the year as are those for the Monovarietals class which are for the best Monastrells, Moscatels and Bobals.

Around 25 bodegas submitted 224 wines this year for consideration and the panel met three times to taste and judge them. The first two stages are eliminatory, the wines being tasted blind and judged according to their appearance, colour, bouquet, taste and quality. Each class is whittled

down to the top scoring 10 wines and these are judged again to award the prizes, which are handed out on the first evening of the ‘Mostra’.

Almost all of the bodegas who have entered the competition are exhibitors at the fair, so the public have the opportunity to taste those wines judged to be the best examples of their type for this year.

Sitting on such a panel gives a wonderful opportunity to judge the overall quality of wines from the new vintage, particularly in the whites, rosados and young reds sections. We think it fair to say that generally for the earlier harvested wines, (whites and rosados) the quality is very good.

The grapes were all picked before the weather suddenly changed, the rains came and temperatures dropped affecting the acidity, sugar content and ripeness of the reds making it a “difficult” year for this category. Not

one winemaker has told VÍ Vid that they had a good year with their red wines!

In the category for white wines the winners were Mariluna 2018, (Verdejo/Macabeo), Alcovi Blanco 2018 (Sauvignon Blanc/Plantafina) and Nodus 2018 (Chardonnay). The Mariluna is from Sierra Norte and we have reviewed their wines many times before. The Alcovi is from a small Coop in the village of Almedijar, near to Segorbe. They produce wines from small plots in and around the Sierra d’Espadan and this white is very fresh with a gooseberry and elderflower bouquet and is crisp in the mouth.

Plantafina is a pretty rare variety and adds acidity to this blend. Nodus also produces consistent wines from their bodega near to Utiel.

2018 in Rosados is a triumph for the Bobal variety from Utiel-Requena. All three prizes went to this grape and DO. The wines are all classic, despite their varying depth of colour, and are packed full of strawberry and raspberry fruit, chewing gum, and strawberry and cream sweets with excellent acidity.

Rosado lovers are in for a treat this summer with the winning wines coming from the Utiel co-op Vega Infante 2018, Rosa&Dito 2018 and Aula 2018 both from Coviñas and Sierra Norte getting a special mention for their Pasión de Bobal.

The young reds generally needed sugar adding to the must or at least tasted as if this was the case, some

being almost sweet and showing why it had been such a difficult year.

Winemakers generally have needed to pull every trick out of the book to ‘correct’ their wines. Nonetheless we have tasted some very good wines from 2018 and the winners in this category are good examples. Huella de Syrah 2018 from Vegamar, Naturel 2018 Monastrell from Bodega los Frailes and Alto Cuevas Sucesión Bobal/Tempranillo 2018 from Covilor took the prizes.

For the reds with oak ageing, the first class is ‘Madurado en Barrica’ signifying a crianza up to three months. Winners here were Pasión de Monastrell 2016 from Sierra Norte, Capitan Julián 2017 Tempranillo and Tesoro de Capitan Monastrell 2016 both from Ontinium.

For reds with 6-12 months in oak (crianza), the winners were Biologiá 2016 Monastrell from Los Frailes, Aula Syrah 2016 from Coviñas and Laudum XII Plus Monastrell from Bocopa.

In the class for Reservas (more than 12 months Crianza), Vegamar picked up another award for their Esencia 2016 Garnacha, Coviñas another for the Adnos 2014 Bobal and newcomers Hacienda la Pajerera a first for their Especias Bobal 2016. The 2016 wines are generally are beginning to show well now but have plenty of life left in them!

In the categories for sweet wines

and vermuts Bodegas Xaló from the Jalon valley did very well, taking four of the six prizes available… Gold and Bronze for Riu Rau and Bahia de Denia respectively and in the Vermuts class Gold and Bronze for Val de Gorgos and Xaloneret respectively. Silvers went to Cuva Vella from Valsangiacomo for their dulce and Adriano from Bodegas Haya for their vermut. This latter vermouth has now sadly sold out!

VÍ Vid hope to visit Bodegas Xaló in May and to be showing some of their wines in forthcoming tastings.

Top wine, the most valued in the competition, went to Bodega La Viña from Font de la Figuera for their Venta del Puerto No 12, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah and Tempranillo with 12 months in American oak and a wonderful vanilla flavour.

“OH SO RIGHTEOUSLY YOURS, LIME AND COCONUT CAKE!” VEGAN AND GLUTEN-FREE Inspired by the Easter holidays and the zippy zap of spring in the air, we were looking for something for our vegan / gluten-free customers. We came up with this gem of a recipe that ticks both boxes and is also super quick to make.

Our lovely work experience boy from Newcastle nearly fell off his chair when we told him there were no eggs in it! And I promise, you’ll “no cannae believe it” either!

You will need a 1k/2lb bread or cake tin, lined.

Heat the oven to 180C/350F gas mark 3

Method First mix the dry ingredients together well, (rice flour, ground almonds, baking powder, baking soda, dried coconut, pistachio nuts).

30 minutes until a fork comes out clean. While the cake is still warm, make small holes over the top and then pour over the lime and sugar mix. When the cake is cool, decorate with icing sugar and the pistachios.

With a whisk, beat the coconut oil and the caster sugar. Add the lime zest, juice of lime and the plant milk. Mix in the dry ingredients gently so as not to lose the air from the cake and hence all its “non-eggy” fluffiness!

ARTESANÍA YUSTE The story of ‘Artesania Yuste’ goes back to the 1960s when Enrique Yuste (senior) was a builder working in derribos, destroying old buildings for new ones. Enrique collected ceramics and quality wood from the ruins. At his home, he became self-taught in the art of ceramics. His son, Enrique Yuste (junior) has been running the shop for many years now and is also an artisan. You will find his workshop at the back of the tienda. Valencia will enter the final stretch of the season with everything to play for.

They are still fighting on three different fronts for meaningful objectives that will determine whether their centenary season will be deemed a successful one or not.

Their first aim is to secure European football at the Mestalla next season.

Currently lying fifth, it could be a tall order to grab one of the top four spots that would guarantee Champions League football.

Barcelona, Atlético Madrid and Real Madrid are as good as confirmed for the top three places and Getafe are realistically in a better position to secure qualification than either Valencia or Sevilla. However, they do still have to face Barcelona at the Nou Camp… which could create a further twist in the equation.

Sevilla’s surprising loss at home to Leganés has now left the club from Andalusia as the outsiders of the three teams with two games left for all concerned.

One thing in favour for Valencia is the positive head-to-head that the club has against both sides. If, by some strange quirk of fate, Valencia finished joint fourth level on points with either Getafe or Sevilla at the end of the league campaign then it would be “Los Murciélagos” that would then claim the higher position. This is courtesy of the league ruling that considers matches played against the opposition a more telling factor than goal difference.

The second objective is to win the Copa Del Rey. Valencia’s last significant silverware was this very trophy, when Ronald Koeman’s side beat Getafe 3-1 in a one-sided final at the now defunct Vicente Calderón stadium in 2008. Eleven years later, it is merely Barcelona that stands in the way of Valencia repeating this achievement. With well under 25,000 tickets available for supporters, many season ticket holders have been left ticketless. The club did their best to be fair to all “socios” by organizing two different “sorteos” observed by a notary. Sadly, this did little to dampen

Historically, this would have seen Valencia playing Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup at the start of next season but the Spanish football federation has approved a new format for 2020 that will new include four teams, (the league’s top two and the two Copa finalists). As Barcelona has qualified for both, Real Madrid has been added to the mix as a result of their third place finish in La Liga.

Barcelona themselves are looking to complete the triple this year. Along with the Copa Del Rey they are also very well placed to reach the final of the Champions League, after beating Liverpool 3-0 at the Nou Camp in the first leg of their semi-final.

At the same meeting they also agreed

to the Copa Del Rey reverting to a single match format, apart from the semi-final stage. Finally, the four competitors in the newly evolved Super Cup are exempt from the first two rounds of the Copa Del Rey. These changes have angered Valencia to the point that they have rejected the proposals. To add further fuel to the fire, the Spanish Football Federation are mulling over an idea to play all the Super Cup matches in Saudi Arabia, following in the footsteps of the Italian League who played their Supercoppa there in January, when tickets were only available to men.

The Spanish federation also tried this season in vain to play some league games in the USA but a Players’ Union revolt helped to quell that notion fairly

quickly. It is likely that we have not heard the last of this saga and there will be further squabbling on this issue throughout the off season.

Thirdly, Valencia also has a chance to compete in the Champions League next year by winning the Europa League this time around. However, their hopes of bagging this trophy took a major blow in the first leg of the semi-final, when they crashed to a 3-1 loss to Arsenal in London.

The two teams have met in Europe several times before, the most memorable being in 1980 when Valencia came out victorious in the first ever penalty shoot out in a European club final competition.

The game ended 0-0 in the ruinous Heysel Stadium in Brussels. The first

penalties taken by Mario Kempes and Liam Brady were saved by the respective goalkeepers. The next nine penalties found the back of the net, and then Graham Rix had his effort saved by Carlos Pereira to give Alfredo Di Stefano’s men the trophy.

Connections between the two clubs do not end there. Gabriel Paulista, Francis Coquelin and Shkodran Mustafi have played for both teams and Arsenal´s coach Unai Emery had a successful spell as coach at the Mestalla.

The energetic Basque had many admirers at Valencia. Unfortunately, he blotted his copy book with his celebration antics as the coach of the Sevilla team that scored a last minute goal to knock Valencia out of the Europa League, in the semi-final Article © 2019 24/7 Valencia

However the early goal, as so many times with Valencia, led to an increased vulnerability. Within twenty minutes, the home side had scored two goals and established a lead they would never relinquish. To compound the situation, Arsenal got a third in the last minute of play to dilute the chances of Valencia going to the final in Baku significantly.

A full Mestalla will do their best to help the team overturn the deficit but it is a tough task. The fans will be hoping

for another glorious night in Europe.

If Valencia are to get on the plane to Azerbaijan, it could rank as one of the best European nights in the club’s history.

Meanwhile, things are beginning to get a little frantic in the north of the city as Levante UD continue to be dragged into the relegation battle. However, a comprehensive 4-1 victory over Rayo Vallecano in their last home game gave them a little breathing space.

One victory from their final two games will see them staying in the top flight for another season at least.

THE IRISH / SPANISH CONNECTION

LETTER FROM CELTIBERIA As I went out to Dublin city, at the hour of twelve at night, who should I see but the Spanish lady, washing her feet by the candlelight —The Spanish Lady, the Dubliners Tourist in Ireland: What’s the Gaelic for mañana?

Irish local: Oh, I don’t think we have a word that describes quite that degree of urgency.

In medieval times, most settlements larger than a hamlet were surrounded by walls to exclude potential invaders, and my home town of Galway was no exception. A stone archway that once formed part of the wall still exists, beside the river mouth. Tourists take photographs, locals arrange to meet there, swans waddle past. There is an open area adjoining it, and on those rare but glorious sunny days, locals come to play football, roller-skate, and catch those seldom-seen rays. The name of this structure is the Spanish Arch.

At times the beneath this arch, you may meet a dark-haired, dark-eyed person who you would swear just got off the plane from Madrid, until he opens his mouth and a strong brogue issues forth. The tradition is that such people are the descendants of the Spanish Armada, although few enough Armada survivors landed in Ireland to have made much impact on the population. It is more likely that the trade between the two nations was responsible. Galway was a port, a trading town, and much of its trade came from the Iberian Peninsula; hence the Spanish Arch. Large numbers of sailors stopping off over the years would leave behind more than oranges and silk.

When the Irish earls of the sixteenth century rebelled against the English, it was to Spain they turned for financial aid; and when the rebellion was inevitably crushed, it was to Spain they ran in what would become to be known as the “Flight of the Earls”. The blood

of those earls no doubt flows in some blue-eyed Spaniard’s veins today.

But the Irish/Spanish connection goes back further than that. Irish legend refers to Ith, who looked out from his tower on the northern coast of Spain and saw a land to the west.

His grandson, Milesius, eventually travelled to this distant land and his descendants became the original Celtic settlers of Ireland. Galician legend also talks of a crossing A Coruña to Cork. Historical fantasy writer Morgan Llewellyn imagines this journey in her atmospheric novel, Bard.

This might seem like a fairytale but there are significant archaeological and cultural similarities between Ireland and Galicia, which point to a clear connection between the regions.

In more recent times, olive-skinned teenagers disembark at airplanes during the summer months, and fill

the Irish streets with their rapid-fire conversation. They hang around in groups and board the buses all at once, clogging the aisles and raising the volume immeasurably. Despite having to come to terms with overcast skies and rainstorms in July, overcooked food served at six in the afternoon, and peculiar version of the English language bearing little resemblance to that taught at school, they seem to lose little of their vitality for life.

Of course, the traffic is far from one way. Countless refugees from the Irish weather take their holidays in sunny Spain. Predominantly Irish resorts have sprung up; one example is Santa Ponsa in Mallorca, affectionately known as “Ballymun in the sun” (Ballymun being a high-rise area of Dublin). But increasing numbers of Irish people choose to move beyond such tourist ghettoes and stay for

more than their allotted two-week break. The obvious attraction is the climate; when the cold rain seeps into your bones and you are looking at grey skies for the fourth month running, forty shades of green lose their romantic appeal.

But beyond that, the Hibernian temperament seems to find the Hispanic disposition remarkably simpatico. I think it is safe to say that the average Irish person arriving in Mediterranean feels a little less culture shock than his cousin from Britain.

Traditionally, until about the 1990s, Ireland was a place where things happened that bit slower than in the Anglo-Saxon world. West of the Irish Sea and south of the Pyrenees, punctuality is a rare virtue. The Irish family often seems closer to the southern than the northern European

model, the Irish Mammy and the Spanish Mamá archetypes bearing an uncanny resemblance. Both have recently experienced the shock of change from a Catholic to a secular society, from pre-industrial to a postindustrial economy, from a rural to an urban culture, from an ethnically homogeneous to a multicultural population.

Then there’s the Irish expression “the crack”, which has its Spanish equivalent in la marcha. Both words sum up a live-for-the-moment philosophy that is both charming and frustrating in measures. ¡Salud!

THE VALENCIAN DRINK HORCHATA The warm days are upon us so it’s time for a long, cool drink. Valencia has two of its very own. Well, ‘Horchata’ was invented in the Sudan and ‘Agua de Valencia’ is really just Buck’s Fizz with a twist. However, let’s not get caught up with details, these days they are both considered as Valencian as paella, fireworks and construction companies.

Horchata is a bit of an acquired taste.

While some would go miles out of their way in the summer heat for just a sip, others would go even more miles just to avoid the stuff. One person we spoke to described it as milk mixed with sand. It looks and tastes like a sort of nutty milkshake, although, actually, there’s no milk in it. It is made from crushed “chufas” or tiger nuts and water.

Sometimes in a sort of slush puppy form, it’s always cool and refreshing.

Befitting its cough medicine texture,

it’s really good for you. Rich in iron and potassium, it has diuretic and energy-restoring properties, sort of a medieval Lucozade really.

The chufa originates from the Chuf area of Sudan. It was one of the first plants to be cultivated by man. They found sacks full of the things in Tutankhamen’s tomb just in case he fancied a few glasses of Horchata in the afterlife, we suppose. The chufa, like most good things, was brought to Valencia by the Moors around the year 700.

However, it wasn’t until the Christian conquest that Horchata got its name, or so legend has it. Some days after the conquest the conquering Christian King Jaime I was riding round the huertas in the Muslim farmlands of Alboraya, surveying his newly conquered properties. It was a hot and dusty day and a Moorish peasant woman offered him a drink. “What is

this?” he asked as he gulped down the flavoursome nectar (or milk with sand, depending on your taste). “Aixo es llet de Xufa, Senyor” (it’s Chufa milk, sir) replied the Moorish woman in perfect Valenciano. “Aixo no es llet de xufa, aixo es or, xata” (that’s not chufa milk, that’s gold my girl or words to that effect). And so the name “or xata” or horchata was born. Just why the King was riding around on his own amongst his enemies just days after a fierce battle, just why he accepted a dodgy looking drink from one of them and, indeed, who exactly recorded this conversation has been lost to history but that’s the only explanation you’ll get round here.

Horchata has become the archetypal Valencian Summer drink. Valencians flock to cool off in the ceramic-tiled Horchatarías dotted all around the city, typically decorated in clinical white and blue with wrought iron tables and chairs for maximum cooling effect.

One of the most famous is the 200 year-old ‘Horchatería Santa Catalina’ opposite the bell tower of the Santa Catalina church, tucked away just off the corner of the Plaza de la Reina.

If you want to go to the real home of horchata take the short trip out by bus or metro to Alboraya, which skirts the city to the North West. The place is like an horchata theme park with huge palatial horchaterías all along the main street. The jewel in the crown being Horchatería Daniel named after its founder Daniel Tortajada, the most famous “orxater” of them all.

He started off with a small bar in the centre of the village before moving to the present vast hall serving, along with the horchata, all manner of ice creams and sweet cakes all made on the premises. Most Valencians enjoy a good farton with their horchata, a long

sausage shaped sweet bun covered in icing. Apart from having a name that cries out for infantile jokes, it’s perfect for dunking into your drink.

Horchatería Daniel has served horchatas to Kings, princes, writers and stars of stage and screen. The walls are decorated with photos of Daniel with football stars like Cañizares and the likes of writer Camila José Cela, actor Viggo Mortensen and the painter Salvador Dalí. Ernest Hemingway also came here but refused to drink horchata and had a glass of wine instead…

I was born in the 60s. Since the late 70s to the present, I’ve always been linked to the musical world. In the beginning as a DJ, then record sales and later as a music promoter. I have always maintained a clear and strong commitment with roots music, mainly with Afro-American genres including Blues, R & B, Soul, Funk, Groove, Acid Jazz, Free Style.

They have been 25 years dedicated 100% to a passionate, coherent and exciting project, always by the motto: ‘Everything for the music’. It has been a long journey, full of great moments, great artists and good friends. It was a risky bet but we have managed to position it as a good reference regarding the Afro-American live music scene.

3. What can you tell our readers regarding ‘FunkSociedad’ Manager Agency?

The Management agency arose from the good relationship maintained

with the musicians of the scene, both with the “old school” and with the “new fresh talents”. From that arose representations, events and promotions and so on…

Summing up, ‘FunkSociedad’ is a playful, cultural collective made up of friends and professionals that brings together different artists, DJs, producers and people from the world of entertainment, whose purpose is to support the music scene and enhance the Mediterranean character that unites us so much.

4. What is your role at Café Mercedes Jazz?

I run the artistic direction, the human resources side, the management of the venue, deal with the suppliers

and the overall management of the establishment. Our weekend proposal consists of three time slots with different contents: - At 9:30 p.m. “Dinner Show” (Jazz, Bossa Nova and Acoustic sessions).

- Around midnight “Hot R & B” (Blues, R & B, Groove, Soul, Reggae & Brazilian

flavours).

- After 2:00 a.m. “Top Vinyl DJs” (daring sets by vinyl DJs, with sessions of FunkSoul, Groove, Acid Jazz, Freestyle and Boogaloo).
