JIMMY GLASS JAZZ
LIVE JAZZ AT ‘JIMMY GLASS’ IN THE HISTORIC CENTRE OF VALENCIA 24/7 Valencia: What is philosophy of Jimmy Glass?
Jimmy Glass owner Chevi Martínez: “Jimmy Glass is ranked amongst the elite of jazz clubs in the world, according to the prestigious specialist magazine ‘DownBeat’ (February 2018). It is the oldest active jazz venue of the Valencian Community. In its almost 28 years of history, its philosophy has always been to create a unique environment and space to offer fans great concerts with the latest jazz from the international scene. For this, we have worked hard during this time to create links with the international circuit and we have brought both avant-garde musicians and great jazz legends. Jimmy Glass has maintained a high level of programming in a consistent way, comparable to other important clubs in the world, thanks to the credibility and seriousness of what it has to offer, which includes the creation of a genuinely jazzy atmosphere, dedicated exclusively to this music. This philosophy means the volume of fans has increased significantly since the nineties, when jazz was a music for an absolute minority.
Jimmy Glass has generated a good portfolio of regulars, now authentic connoisseurs, creators of an unparalleled atmosphere and who know how to value the proposals of the club however risky they may be. And, in jazz, if you do not take risks, nothing is achieved. But with knowledge, of course. It is not easy terrain and you have to be always on the pulse. Thanks to this, many great international musicians request to play in Jimmy Glass, due to the prestige it has gained and once they come and experience the atmosphere and the solidity of the place, they return repeatedly. They do not need luxuries; they need soul, and Jimmy Glass has it. That’s what its philosophy is based on, authenticity. Via Jimmy Glass have experienced great international stars and legends such as Benny Golson, Kenny Garrett, Lee Konitz, Lou Donaldson, Pat Martino, Charles McPherson, James Carter, Wallace Roney, Al Foster, Billy Hart, Oliver Lake, Vincent Herring or Scott Hamilton, and also the great jazz figures such as Mark Turner, Greg Osby, Larry Grenadier, Jeff Ballard, Ravi Coltrane, Antonio
Sanchez, Peter Bernstein, Ambrose Akinmusire, Donny McCaslin, Linda Oh, Nasheet Waits, Aaron Parks and many more… And, of course, all the great Spanish and Valencian musicians that I will not name because the list is endless, they have at Jimmy Glass the right place to present their projects and play with focus & application. In the media and for many fans here and elsewhere, Jimmy Glass is named ‘The Temple of Jazz’ in Valencia.” Interview by Will McCarthy

Also a little pop and rock. They also buy your records. By the way, their monthly Splendini DJ sessions at OVEN Bar have become legendary. These people know their music. On the menu, you can enjoy great Russian salad, Guacamole, Wheat Bread Bocadillos, Pastrami, Marinated Salmon, Vito Lasaña and more. In ad-
dition, all their tapas and sandwiches are homemade and lovingly prepared. They have a wide range of drinks, craft beers from Tyris and Zeta, TURIA Märzen and good wines. Spendini has a unique vibe, an unpretentious setting and is somewhere really special to hang out. They want their customers to chill out and enjoy good food, good music and good company. Splendini continues to do book and record release presentations. There is a busy programme of DJs and they organize parties and are open to your proposals! LALOLA 4 EXPERIENCES 1 TEAM
LALOLA RESTAURANT We are a team that has been in the centre of the city for 17 years. We serve Mediterranean cuisine restaurant, with rice and paellas made onthe-spot. It is a special enclave with a relaxing terrace. Located at the foot of the ‘Miguelete’ cathedral tower in a medieval street, in the shape of a zigzag, is where you will find the LALOLA TERRACE. ‘Lalola’ is recognized by the Huffington Post and ABC newspaper, as one of the most romantic restaurants in the city of Valencia. * Calle Subida del Toledano, 8. Reservations 963 918 045 email@example.com
COLMADO LALOLA Over the years, we have been expanding our gastronomic offer to the public, creating a new project just 20 meters from the restaurant. Across from the entrance of the cathedral of Valencia, you will find EL COLMADO LALOLA. Violeta Villanueva, mother of the owner Jesús Ortega, is the soul of the place, since originally she ran a grocery store here, transferring her experience to this new more contem-
porary version. It is a fitting tribute to the typical local stores of the barrio of yesteryear, where food & drink was bought and tasted in the same place. Iberian cut ham, artisan cheeses, local products of the sea (Valencia oysters, ‘clotxina’ mussels), homemade croquettes, smoked & salted fish and, above all, authentic Valencian tapas with a creative twist. * Calle Bordadores, 10. In front of the Miguelete tower. No reservation is necessary. firstname.lastname@example.org
LOLITA BAR & COCKTAIL The third team experience started just 4 months ago. Also to be found 20 meters from the restaurant LALOLA. Excellent furnishing and pampered art deco decoration. Enjoy a surprisingly ample terrace, surrounded by plants. It will move you to another era. Varied cocktail menu, from the classic infallible, to the most trendy. Gintonics, shots, coffees and infusions. Our specialty is ‘Agua de Valencia’ with Valencian oranges, cava brut nature and a spirit touch. An essential place to chill out and enjoy a cocktail in the
city, “Very Chic...” According to Forbes magazine. * Calle Santo Cáliz, 7. Reservations 606 145 563 LALOLA BEER With our beer, we wanted to pay tribute to the Barrio del Carmen in Valencia. To its streets, its squares and especially to its people, who for a long time represented the artistic, bohemian and musical spirit of the city. It is a light beer, blonde and very fresh, with a citrus touch and aromatic orange blossom. Local Craft beer and ready for you to enjoy in our neighborhood stores. * Acquire it in any of our stores. RESTAURANT OF THE MONTH TAPAS BAR OF THE MONTH EL ARENAL
CLANN BAR 24/7 Valencia: Can you tell us about your background regarding the world of tapas?
Clann: “Valencia has changed a lot. I came to this city 20 years ago and worked in ‘Tasca Angel’, which was my classic schooling in choosing the right fresh products from the ‘Mercado Central.’ I also learnt how to cook so that the public eats well. I saw that with a bit more effort than normal you can present great tapas to customers that don’t cost them the earth. I also lived in Ireland for five years and worked in restaurants, café-bars & gastro pubs. My wife is Irish.
with mushrooms, cuttlefish, mussels, artichokes…all depending on the week or ‘temporada.’ At the moment, we have a ‘Tomate Valenciano’ with goat’s cheese & tuna. We currently have meat dishes like ‘Carrillada’ and Honeyed Ibérico Pork Fillet. Vegetarian options include our homemade tortilla and a platter of manchego cheese.
24/7 Valencia: What is the philosophy of Clann?
At Clann, you can often have grilled ‘dorada’ sea bream or a boneless version of a mountain rabbit dish, typical of the local region. Our calamari (squid) is a “delicia” and a speciality, which we affectionately call ‘8 bombones’ and it is fresh, grilled and flavoured with a parsley sauce. We also have cured octopus from Dénia, down the coast.
Clann: We have a fairly ample ‘carta’ with meat, fish and vegetable dishes. I like to cook according to the seasons. So, you will find tapas & dishes
We have an Irish dish with top quality ‘Black Angus’ steak and some great Irish whiskies too. Regarding vinos from the community, we have
a youngish red Bobal wine from Requena-Utiel and refreshing ‘Marina Alta’ white wine. We also have mature wines with more body from the north of Spain, Argentina and Cavas by the glass from Valencia too. There isn’t a fixed menu as our kitchen is limited in size. Our philosophy is to have great product and a little bit of everything …one good salad, one good cheese, one good ham, one good tomato… fresh and cooked-in-the-moment. This isn’t a robotic place. It is an intimate space where you can enjoy a good conversation with the staff & other customers, just like the old days used to be in taverns. We have an outside terrace too.”

FOOD BY HELEN WESTWATER OF LA OLA FRESCA
FARTONS When I arrived in Valencia 12 years ago, I was not really aware that the language valenciano existed. I remember chortling to myself in a supermarket as I spied a packet of iced buns labelled ‘Fartons’. Worse, later, I even pompously wrote to the organisers of a festival suggesting they change the festival name ‘Estic Fart’ to something that would not cause international confusion. Politely, they told me that it was their language and they would do what they liked! Now graduated in my Valencian life, I know Fart means fed. ‘Estic fart’, I’m fed up and a Farton is the perfect something to feed you up, which it does both through design and end result! The Farton is the invention of the Polo family from Titaguas. After the civil war and the scarcity of food, they moved to the more prosperous town of Algemesi and got involved in the production of food. Years later, they moved to the more horticultural area of Alboraya where they set up an ultramarino shop around 1960. Surrounded by the fields of tiger nuts used to make the traditional horchata drink, they decided that they could improve the traditional accompaniment of Rosquilleta (bread stick) used to ‘mojar’ (dunk) with horchata with their own recipe. Fartons were specially designed to be airy and light so as to absorb more horchata and long enough to dip to the bottom of the glass, like an organic straw to ‘feed up’ the horchata! There are now two versions, a more pastry version and the traditional bread bun version. Now, half a century later, the factory of the Polo family are making 25.000 ‘fartons’ an hour! In this recipe, we will make a modest 10 of the more traditional bread one. Made with sunflower oil and just a little sugar it is not too unhealthy for a tea-time treat. And in these days where some are having to live on food banks, while others feel the pressure to diet, detox or fast, it is refreshing to have a recipe, I like to think, that’s named for the simple joy of being full. We don’t know how lucky we are! So, eat sensibly and take care how your food is produced but also enjoy it. In other words, keep calm and farton!
Method When your dough is silky soft, place it in a grease bowl under a clean damp cloth for about 30 minutes. Next take your dough, stretch it out a little and the make portions of about 50g each. You should get about 10 rolls out of this quantity. Leave them to rise When the mix has started to again for about 5 minutes. come away from the sides of the bowl, add the oil and salt With a rolling pin, roll the ball and continue to knead with your into a rectangular shape, and hands until it is well mixed. Pla- then gently roll the mix up like ce your dough on a lightly flou- a sleeping bag. It doesn’t have red board and then knead for at to be too even, that is part of the least 10 minutes (or cheat with charm. Place your little fartons in a large a mixer) Dissolve the yeast with a little warm water and honey. Whisk the egg with the sugar. When the yeast has started working (frothing slightly), mix with the eggs and sugar and start to work into the measured and sieved flour.
tupperware box and seal. Leave to ferment for about 3 hours. Finally pre-heat the oven to the hottest temperature, 250 c if possible. Place your fartons on a baking tray. Lower the oven temperature to 200c and cook near the bottom of the oven for about 12 minutes. Make up the glaze with the icing sugar and warm water and while the fartons are still hot, paint them with generous quantities of the glaze.
If you haven’t got time to make Fartons, take a trip out the huerta to see where the tiger nuts of horchata drink is grown and visit one of the many horchaterias in Alboraya. Special tours are available through the Happy Tourist Center, where you can also rent bikes 0034 653 36 86 88 Pre-book a picnic from La Ola Fresca to pick up on your way! RESTAURANT OF THE MONTH
VALENCIA EL ARENALFOOTBALL
THE WAIT IS FINALLY OVER ! At last! After eleven years and 39 days… the wait is finally over. Valencia have a meaningful piece of silverware in their trophy cabinet after more than a decade of trying. Valencia beat Barcelona in the Copa Del Rey Final in Sevilla on the 25th of May, sending the city into raptures and continuous celebrations for days on end.
Neto in goal and Wass got the nod over Piccini for the right back slot.
shot that whistled past the left-hand side of Cillessen.
Barcelona had injury worries with their maverick striker Luis Suarez unavailable. Messi, Pique and Busquets would all start… making the Catalans the clear favourites with the bookmakers before a ball had been kicked.
The Benito Villamarín stadium and fans zones in Valencia erupted simultaneously and the supporters dared to dream that the long wait for that elusive trophy was about to come to an end.
The last time the club has had such a successful season was in 2008. Then Gordon Brown was the Prime Minister of Great Britain and Ronaldo was winning the Champions League with Manchester United. Ferran Torres was an eight year old, watching his home town club defeat Getafe in that year’s Copa Del Rey Final.
Within five minutes, Los Che had a wonderful chance to open the scoring. Rodrigo found himself oneon-one with the keeper. The Spanish international rounded Cillessen and looked certain to stroke the ball into the empty net. From nowhere, Piqué raced back and intercepted the ball on the goal line with an excellent piece of defending that left Valencia fans shaking their head in disbelief.
Fast track to 2019 and Torres made the Valencia squad for this year’s contest, although he had to settle for the subs bench with Guedes being preferred. Gamiero and Rodrigo bagged the two forward spots, Jaume was named ahead of
Fifteen minutes later, Valencia did take the lead. A long ball from Paulista put Gaya in behind the Barcelona defence. His pull back to Gameiro on the edge of the area was controlled nicely by the Frenchman. His first touch created space for a
Valencia doubled their lead just after the half hour mark. Carlos Soler outsprinted former Valencia favourite Jordi Alba on the right flank and put a dangerous cross with pace into the six yard box. It evaded the Barcelona defenders and reached Rodrigo who instinctively headed the ball downwards. To the delight of the 25,000 Valencians in the stadium, the ball flew past the stranded goalkeeper and Los Che were two goals to the good. Half-time came and Valencia knew there would be a backlash from the La Liga Champions in the second half. Inevitably, the main source for a Barcelona revival came in the shape of Lionel Messi. The little
Argentinian created an opportunity out of nothing, when jinxing past two defenders, to hit the ball with the outside of his foot past a despairing dive from Jaume. Fortunately for Valencia, the effort hit the post and the rebound back into play was blasted over by Vidal when he should have done better. Messi did reduce the arrears in the 73rd minute. A dynamite header by Clément Lenglet from a corner was excellently tipped onto the post by Jaume but the Barcelona number 10 was the first to react, to stab the ball home. Valencia fans endured a nervewracking end to the game and five minutes of injury time did little to appease the supporters’ nerves. Finally, Alberto Undiano Mallenco blew his whistle and the Copa Del Rey was Valencia’s. A tearful captain, Dani Parejo collected the trophy and the players
celebrated in style. An open-top bus parade from the airport culminating in a reception at the Mestalla followed the next day, once the squad had returned from their base in Jerez. The road to the final had been an arduous one. Struggling to get past plucky Ebro, followed by a favourable draw that pitted the club against the lowest ranked team left in the competition, Sporting Gijón. The miracle of Getafe and then having to overcome Real Betis in the semi, when the final would be played on their home soil. Valencia never gave up and were rewarded for their efforts. By winning the Copa Del Rey, Valencia will be given a bye in the first two rounds of next season’s competition. The format is also to be changed to a single match until the semi-final stages. The winner will also be assured of a place in the
Europa League. The club will now look to challenge more vociferously the Spanish Football Federation’s ruling that four teams will contest the Super Copa next season. Real Madrid, Atlético Madrid, Barcelona and Valencia will go into a draw to see who plays each other in a semi-final, with the winners playing off against each other. To make matters worse, the idea is to possiblly play all the matches in Saudi Arabia not Spain. The dates for the new look tournament are set to be mid-January. On the plus side Valencia can expect to make more than a million euros from their presence in the competition. La Liga clubs have voted overwhelmingly against the concept but both the Spanish Super Cup and the Copa Del Rey are controlled by RFEF, so this plan remains well and Article © 2019 24/7 Valencia
truly in place at this moment in time. Expect this controversial saga to run throughout the summer months and hostility towards the idea gain momentum. Valencia’s quest for a European trophy this season unfortunately fell just shy of a final appearance in Baku. However, Arsenal´s 7-3 demolition of the team in the Europa League semi-final was incredibly frustrating because the Gunners were distinctly average in both legs. On the plus side, Valencia did guarantee Champions League football at the Mestalla next year with a fourth place La Liga finish. A victory over Valladolid in the last game of the season ensured the team stayed ahead of Getafe and Sevilla, to claim the coveted prize of entry into Europe’s most prestigious club competition. Reflecting back on the centenary year, the fans will be relatively happy with the outcome after a sluggish start to the league campaign. The captain Parejo has been immense
this year, winning over the fans after being subject to jeers and criticism in the past. Rodrigo now is the player that divides the supporters. Ineffective and sulky at times, he does have the ability to score important goals. Barcelona are sniffing and a substantial offer from the Catalans might be enough to get the club to sell the Spanish international. Denis Suarez could be potentially used to sweeten the deal as Marcelino is an admirer of him from their time together at Villarreal, and the Colombian international Radamel Falcao is being touted as a target for the club by some of the national sporting newspapers. The club will also have to make a decision on whether to continue with the services of Roncaglia and Chéryshev, on loan from Celta Vigo and Villarreal respectively. After two years in the wilderness, the forgotten man Aymen Abdennour will be returning from Marseille unless the club can find a buyer.

Meanwhile, Levante UD are keen on acquiring Ruben Vezo on a permanent deal. The young Portuguese defender has had a successful loan spell with Los Granotas and has been instrumental in shoring up the defence in the latter part of the season. With another season in La Liga confirmed for the club from the north of the city, Vezo may decide the time is right to leave the Mestalla for guaranteed first team football. Jason is bound for Valencia. The agent for Campana and Toño is making noises about possible transfers to more fashionable clubs, and Mayoral is also returning to Real Madrid, so expect a lot of wheeling and dealing from Levante in the summer months. With two teams from the city still in La Liga and Villarreal just up the coast, you can expect 2020 to be another top class year for watching football in the Valencia region.
Anyone wishing to get tickets for Valencia or Levante games can do so by visiting the box offices at their ground or through their respective websites. www.valenciacf.com www.levanteud.com Article © 2019 24/ 7 Valencia

FESTIVALS VALENCIA/SPAIN 2019
GET DOWN (AND UP) ON THE COAST! FESTIVAL OVERVIEW 2019 There is an unwritten and deep correlation between the options available each summer for British and Irish festival goers in the UK and those in Spain… one that few may suspect. Let’s just say that when the ‘Glastonbury’ (the mother of all festivals) takes a year off both the array of major acts touring Europe & festival tourists themselves immediately look south for a “major bang” to add to their summer schedule. Last year, this caused almost all big Spanish summer festivals to sell out way ahead of normal. This year, the lineup in most Spanish festivals is slightly less focused on British acts but it gives the locals and expats a chance to score tickets just a few weeks in advance of the events. So, we’re offering a helping hand to pick a few select spots to blow off some summer steam. The nicer the weather, the earlier the music starts, and the closest to the beach, the better, to sum up what’s to come. Locally and at the heart of the buzzing
port area you can enjoy Valencia’s 4EverFestival/La Marina Sur/July 21/ www.4evervalenciafest.com. They are taking the same path that many of the upcoming festivals will follow: offer a unique Spanish date for a big-name artist. Last year, it was The Prodigy to bring Keith Flint’s (RIP) last Spanish performance. This year, they will bring Tears for Fears for a one-off Spanish date and Keane will play too. Other new ventures have carried on nicely into the new summer season, with dates yet to be confirmed by the Brunch In the Park/La Marina/August TBC/ valencia.brunch-in.com crew. There will also be various weekly events curated near Valencia’s port and the Marina’s docks by the evergrowing The Basement/La Marina/ weekends of June-August/www. thebasementxxx.com underground electronic crew, who will have weekly events from here until the end of August next to Valencia’s own beaches.
will have taken over for the whole week at FIB/Benicàssim/19-22 July/ www.fiberfib.com and never mind the somewhat humble cast of bands for festival of this magnitude. The event itself will well make up for it, turning the coastal city of Benicàssim and its beaches into a week-long extravaganza, sprinkled yet again with exclusive Spanish dates for massive stars such as Lana del Rey and Kings of Leon. There will be a wink to draw the locals with Vetusta Morla, one of Spain’s seminal rock groups offering a special rendition of one of their classic albums in its entirety as a Sunday night closer. Later in the summer, once you know your way to the venue, you can also relax and chill out for yet another week at Rototom Sunsplash/ Benicassim/August 16-22/ www. rototomsunsplash.com with excellent reggae & world music as its theme. Yet again, Benicàssim takes the cake and bakes the bodies this summer in the Valencian community.
Locals willing to travel further up the coast could alternatively join the predominantly British campers who

On the electronic front, the variety yet again is spread out almost every single weekend offering the top names on the circuit and giving a soundtrack to the Mediterranean coast from the end of June all the way into the beginning of September. To mention but a few festivals up and down the coast: for the younger and more adventurous crowds, Marenostrum Xperience/ Marina Sur/12-13 July/www. marenostrumxperience.com, Arenal Sound/Burriana/30 July–4 August/ www.arenalsound.com, Wonderland Medusa Sunbeach/Cullera/7-12 August/www.medusasunbeach.com and Low Festival/Benidorm/26-28 July/ www.lowfestival.es will offer electronic healing. In the meantime for those looking to get away, check out BBK Live/Bilbao/11-13/July/www. bilbaobbklive.com and the absolutely massive Mad Cool/Madrid/10-13 July/www.madcoolfestival.es will
again be competing for the strongest overall lineup of the summer on the very same weekend in July. ‘BBK’ bringing the likes of Liam Gallagher, The Strokes, Weezer and Suede. ‘Mad Cool’ topping them with Bon Iver, Lauryn Hill, The Smashing Pumpkins, Noel Gallagher, The National, Iggy Pop, Disclosure, Jon Hopkins and the return of The Cure themselves. Look no further! Spain is still the place to be if you’re planning your vacation and the best summer soundtrack is guaranteed. If you are already living here, well, it does not seem like you need holidays this summer as you can live them any week you choose and both day and night. Twenty Four Seven! That’s it folks for this year. So, handbags in the air for the ladies, the best vibes on for the gentlemen and beach gear for all. Get ready and get down!
