BETWEEN THE DEVIL AND THE DEEP BLUE SEA: VALENCIA’S POBLADOS MARITIMOS Valencia’s Poblados Marítimos have been through a lot. Over the years, they have been destroyed by fire, suffered the worst of the city’s floods, and been flattened by bombs. The area’s residents have had to put up with Formula One cars careering around their once peaceful streets and now – crumbling houses, while all the money the races were supposed to bring has disappeared into a big hole or a Swiss bank account. What many perceive as a new threat to the area has stalled for now due to the recession but there are still plans to see Avenida Blasco Ibáñez expand towards the sea along with six huge 50 – floor towers planned for El Grao. Parts of the area have been left in a strange sort of limbo with condemned houses and streets left to decay. The Poblados Marítimos are made up of three of Valencia’s most traditional and most neglected neighbourhoods; El Grao near the port and El Cabanyal and El Canyamelar along the seafront to the north. El Grao was founded by Jaume I in 1238 on the site of what is thought to be the old Roman port. Its residents gradually spread out to what was then called the Barrio de Pescadores (or Fisherman’s District), later to be known as the Cabanyal and the Canyamelar, which were painted by Flemish artist Wijngaerde in 1563 as a small group of barracas (traditional Valencian wooden cottages with steep thatched roofs). Just as their original name suggests, the main activity was fishing (with a bit of smuggling thrown in) while the residents of the Grao were mainly employed in

jobs connected to the port. A great fire in 1796 completely destroyed the wooden structures of the Cabanyal. The fire was a huge tragedy for the district and stayed in the collective memory for years to come. The area was rebuilt but this time the, again, mostly wooden barracas were organised into a series of wide streets running parallel to the sea. Each street was wide enough to stretch out the fishing nets for drying as described in Blasco Ibáñez’s novel, “Flor de Mayo”. The barracas were gradually replaced by brick houses (the last barraca was demolished in 1939) but the structure of the streets remained, and still remains today, almost like a sea wall running horizontal to the sea. The Civil War brought more tragedy to the area. With its proximity to the port, bombing raids caused the almost complete destruction of El Grao and the whole area had to be rebuilt after the war. Then came the great floods of 1957. The design of the streets meant that the water could not easily escape to the sea, and the many one and two – storey houses in the neighbourhood were almost completely covered, leading to great losses. The Poblados Marítimos didn’t officially become part of the city of Valencia until 1897. Even then they were physically separated from the rest of the city by four kilometres of agricultural land occasionally punctuated by a few buildings like the Palacio de Ayora, which still stands in the middle of Ayora Park, and later the “Isla Perdida” in

the ‘50s. The Valencia – Barcelona railway line which ran along what is now Boulevard Serrería was another physical barrier. All of which meant that the people of the maritime neighbourhoods developed a strong feeling of having a separate identity to the rest of the city’s citizens. More than any other part of the city, they have kept Valencian as their mother tongue and Spanish was rarely spoken in the area until the ‘50s and ‘60s. The area also has its very own Easter festival, La Semana Santa Marinera, which takes place solely in this part of the city. The religious iconography and cofradías (brotherhoods) of sinister – looking Nazerenes march through the district escorted by the granaderos in Napoleonic uniforms which are copies of originals stolen as trophies from retreating French soldiers at the end of the French occupation. The neighbourhood also goes against the grain when it comes to football. Cabanyal FC formed in 1907 and changed its name to Levante FC in 1909, which later became the modern day Levante UD. To this day, the majority of Levante’s fan base lives in, or has links with, the Poblados Marítimos. They are even different when it comes to facial hair. A bizarre study by the Universidad Politécnica showed that the percentage of men with beards is up to 10% higher in the Poblados Marítimos than any other part of the city. The low – rise single family houses and the high number of small, family – owned

businesses (more than 3,000 in the three neighbourhoods) creates an atmosphere more similar to a village than a district of a large Spanish city, with people sitting out on their dining room chairs outside their own front doors. This is the kind of sense of community that organisations like Salvem el Cabanyal claim are under threat by the planned extension of Av. Blasco Ibáñez through the heart of El Cabanyal to the sea. They also claim that in the last decade the area has been systematically excluded from any development or restoration projects, leading to even more deterioration. Others argue that the extension will revive the area economically and is necessary for the development of the city and the district. Whatever your opinion, 184 buildings will have to be demolished if the plan goes ahead, and many of them (like the Lonja de Pescado built in 1909) are Level 1 – 3 protected buildings. Since the plan was approved in February 1999, the council has received more than 110,000 written complaints. To build a great avenue to the sea and thus connect the city once and for all to its beaches has been an obsession for successive local governments since the 19th century. Plans however have always stalled due to finance and the thorny ‘problem’ of the Cabanyal. In a kind of war of attrition, the powers-thatbe seem now to be intentionally making the area less and less desirable so

it will be all the easier to carry out the extension of Blasco Ibáñez. The route of the planned extension has been virtually left to rot, with fewer and fewer shops and businesses, and squatters from other parts of the city moving in to abandoned areas. Extensions of wasteland where houses have been demolished, cordoned off with breeze block walls painted in ugly brown stripes to show they have been expropriated, have become a symbol of the slow destruction of the area. Valencia has never come to terms with its proximity to the sea. It doesn’t feel like a maritime city. When you sit, say, in Plaza Xúquer, you don’t feel like you are closer to the beach than the centre. The Cabanyal stands, perhaps, like a wall between the city and the sea and no one would deny the attraction of walking down to the sea along a leafy, wide avenue like Blasco Ibañez. At the moment, though, it all seems so unnecessary. What once seemed a very modern project now feels to many like an attempt to destroy a part of the city along with its community and heritage. Though the area will undoubtedly change, there are plenty of places which will hopefully keep the spirit of the place alive, like the Cabanyal’s old Casinet at the end of C/ Progreso. This large, noisy old bar hasn’t really altered since the 1900s and has long been at the centre of the community as the home of the

Fisherman’s Union. And then there’s the C/ de la Reina, with its popular modernist houses decorated with shiny broken ceramic tiles and wrought iron. There’s also, of course, Casa Montaña at C/ José Benlliure, 69, one of the oldest bodegas in Valencia which has been providing people with wine and beer since 1836. Now an upmarket tapas bar, if you can’t find room in the old shop entrance front bar, the place balloons out through the back. There’s also the famous Pascuala in C/ Eugenia Viñes with its rough – and – ready welcome and giant bocadillos in an old style bodega bar. In El Grao, the real must-see is the Reales Atarazanas, the 14th century shipyards with their five long magnificent gothic arches in Plaza Tribunal de les Aigües. Just across the street you can get a real taste of the Grao by having a caña and a toasted bocadillo de habas in the dusty old Casa Calabuig at the very end of Avenida del Puerto. So if you are popping out of the pizzeria or McDonalds or into the Irish pub for a pint of Guinness and wondering about how hard it is to tell one European city’s faceless shopping centre from another, why not take a little trip down to the Poblados Marítimos? Before it’s too late.

Luna y Panorama de los Insectos is a collective of musicians based in the city of Valencia interested in having music as the main focus and its relationship to poetry and the visual and performing arts. Our intention is to take the viewer on a dream – like voyage to a magical world. Our concept goes beyond the conventional sense of a live music concert. We try to present a complete show, a journey in which all the senses come into play and we take the audience on a trip into areas of the subconscious, a kind of collective catharsis for the musicians, artists and audience. We aren’t influenced by a single style so much as a varied assortment that keeps changing and adding to the palette of colours in the band’s sound. Our influences are the sum of all the influences on every musician in Luna and our collaborators. Currently, you could say that our sound is a mixture of rock, jazz, folk, cabaret, contemporary classical and experimental music, all whipped together in the blender of the poetic and theatrical. A hallmark of Luna is that we aren’t closed to any influence or style. How do you find Valencia as a city to live socially and to play live music? Living in Valencia has its pros and cons. It’s a reasonably sized city where life has a slower pace than in the big cities, the weather is great and most of the people are open. Having been raised here, the proximity of the Mediterranean, the food, the typical Valencian hedonism is a kind of way of life that you always come back to. It’s very strange, you can ask any native and surely they will all tell you the

same thing. It’s like a mother you love and hate at the same time. Regarding the live music scene, Valencia has always been a land of great musicians. Today there are countless groups, soloists, orchestras, etc., you could name, it’s a comprehensive and top-quality scene. It’s a shame that the institutions don’t do more to promote it. It really is very difficult to open venues for live music because the regulations for obtaining permits and licenses are very strict. They don’t allow musicians to play in the street and these things have to be corrected in time if we don’t want to let so much talent go to waste or be lost. I think this city has some unfinished business with its artists. Tell us something about the songs on the album, ‘Luna y Panorama de los Insectos’ This first album offers a little taste of our musical and poetic investigation, how we go about finding our own voice and exploring a new, unfamiliar territory. Actually, we’re not used to giving clues about what people will find at our shows or in our songs. We want a different kind of communication where free interpretation and open – mindedness are very important. We want the listener to approach our songs

with fresh ears and eyes and draw their own conclusions. Todo la Tristeza Musically, it represents the more rock side of the record, with a swing – style intro that leads into the actual song, a haunting bass line, a sea of cellos, an invitation to new beauty after the madness, exalted words that look from ‘I’ towards ‘us’. Agua Bailada en el Agua This piece discusses the relationship established between the artist and the work, the vision and contemplation of beauty. Musically, we move from the slow, somewhat psychedelic theme at the beginning to more forceful acoustic rock that permeates the entire disc. Lobo Poema Perro It’s a statement, a kind of poetic snapshot of our singer, Carlos Luna. Musically it is a piece influenced by Indian music, with table drums and castanets flowing into a choral song to life itself. La Vida es Más Pequeña In this song we return to different

soundscapes coexisting, with a piano introduction that could be a lullaby giving way to a new musical landscape with psychedelic overtones. The song moves along with a drum roll fit for a parade or a battle with ten voices singing in unison to arrive at an exciting, fast and furious finale. Pequeño Vals Vienés It is our adaptation of Federico García Lorca’s poem of the same title. Cabaret, waltz, music for the circus and music box ballerinas. Our relationship with poetry is evident in all our work. In fact we took the title from another Lorca poem as the name for the band (“Moon and Panorama of the Insects”). No Volver Keep moving, forwards, don’t go back, don’t go back to old lives, people or worlds that you don’t identify with today. Musically, it mixes arrangements for strings (violin and acoustic bass) with our signature neo-acoustic folk rock. It’s an epic, intense song. What are your future plans? We are currently in the midst of preparing our two concerts/shows, ‘Todo lo Posible’ and ‘Dentro del Loco’ and will

be appearing live in Madrid, Sagunto , the Balearic Islands , Castellón and other cities all over Spain in the next few months. The first gig will be on June 23. They have invited us for the closing show of ‘The Seventh Vice’ program of Radio 3 in the Cineteca del Matadero in Madrid where we will perform some songs live, and also play live later at the post-taping party. We’re also in the process of writing the songs that we’ll be recording for our next album once the summer is over. Does eternal love exist? Everything about love has to be related to the infinite, too. Emotions and feelings have their own life, they exist in an ongoing and unique world of their own above any laws and the space-time continuum. Love, art and beauty are words directly related to the eternal and infinite, the transcendence of being, the relationship of the individual to the collective. I don’t know if I answered your question. It’s always risky to ask this kind of question to a poet. Being specific is not always the best way to go about approaching them, nor the most accurate.

Blondies By Helen Westwater La Ola Fresca Despite various desperate attempts to extract the recipe of La Ola Fresca brownies from us, it still remains a highly guarded secret. Certainly in June of all months, with those bikini missions in full fling, it would be unfair to release this temptation of the devil on those of you about to bare your bodies to the cruel glare of the sun! Saving you from that (except, of course, for when you come to La Ola Fresca, when you will definitely fall prey to our temptations), this month we have chosen El Señor Brownie’s more health – conscious partner, Blondie! Surprisingly for a blonde, you will be pleased to know that Blondie will help to lower your blood pressure with, to get technical, high – density lipoproteins; chickpeas and nut butter and hence Vitamin B6 which, incidentally (for ladies), may also help to increase your bust. I’m not sure what happens to men, but I’m sure it must be good. For students in exam panic, the low sugar content will keep your emotions on a more even plane. Flourless and egg – free, even your celiac and vegan friends can enjoy the party. There are various versions so you can experiment with flavours. Some use almond butter, some peanut. You can add desiccated coconut to add a slightly nutty, higher sugar taste. To make a stronger chocolate taste you can blend the chocolate into the mix. All the ingredients are edible raw, so feel free to taste the mix and alter it to your liking... You can either bake them in one baking tray or use cupcake cases for individual blondies. Preparation Pre-heat your oven to 180C / 350F

Samosas • 1 jar cooked chickpeas, soaked and rinsed (or make your own from dried) • 1/3 cup peanut butter (or almond butter) • 1/3 cup pure maple syrup or agave nectar (or honey if you’re not vegan) • 2 teaspoons vanilla • 1/2 teaspoon salt • 1/4 teaspoon baking powder • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda • 1/3 cup dark chocolate, chopped or chocolate chips, plus 2 tablespoons to sprinkle on top (or use vegan – friendly equivalent) • Sea salt for sprinkling

Pre-grease an 8 x 8 inch/ 20 x 20cm baking tray or use cupcake cases. Place all the ingredients except the chocolate in a food processor and blend well. Then fold in the chocolate chips or chopped dark chocolate. Place the mix in your pre-prepared baking tray or cupcake tray. Then sprinkle remaining chocolate over the top. Bake for around 20 to 25 minutes or about 15 minutes for cupcakes. Be careful not to over – bake them. They are better slightly sticky than dry. Place on a wire rack to cool. MATTILDA May is an odd month. One minute it is warm and spring – like, the next minute there’s a cold wind, especially in the afternoon and evening. We were hoping for the former the night we went to Mattilda, but the wind was whipping down C / Roteros, so our plans to eat al fresco were dashed. There were a few people drinking outside and braving the winds but they weren’t eating. There’s a great selection of foods to be found along this street just behind and to the right of the Torres de Serranos. It is lined with bars and restaurants that are almost all worth visiting and most with little terraces that make the street an obstacle course for the odd driver that braves the challenge. Mattilda is a pretty, vintage – style restaurant/bar halfway along the street. It has been serving fine food to an eclectic soundtrack for just on 10 years. Rufo, the owner, is Argentinian and is currently sporting one of those luxuriant hipster beards – I recently read that people in London are having hair transplants to achieve them! He is drawing with crayons at the bar with his son and his mum, but he breaks away to show us to our table. It’s just the two of us tonight. Rufo tells us he thinks we should try the menú with a couple of extra dishes to taste. Would we like to go straight into wine or would we prefer an aperitif? We decide we would like wine, he returns with not one, but three bottles for us to choose from and we settle for Viña Almate, a tempranillo from Castilla y León, a very good choice. We eat home-made crisps as we wait for our first plate, a little mountain of mixed leaves with duck breast and bacon with a subtle and

delicious dressing. Next came a terrine of Carpaccio de bonito (a small tuna) and vegetables in soy and sesame oil, topped with tiny vegetable tempuras. The smoothness of the soft bonito and the crunch of the tempura batter was a perfect match. Everything here is not only delicious but beautifully presented, too, and the Mussels steamed in ginger and lemongrass was no exception, pretty and full of flavour. Chicken croquetas were next, served with a tasty salsa. Croquetas are being elevated to high art and are many a restaurant’s speciality of the house these days. These were up with the best we’ve tried. A Coco de cabra (goat’s cheese flan) was next, tomato and red onion on a pizza crust topped with honey – drizzled goat’s cheese. Our main course was a Carrillada de cerdo (pork cheek), slow cooked to perfection and served on sliced potatoes...melt-in-the-mouth, rich and wonderfully good. By this stage in the evening the room was filling up, some of the drinkers from the terrace had retreated indoors to become diners, oiled by the drinks but cold from the wind, they were shivery and noisy but were soon eating and chatting over the excellent food. INTERVIEW WITH TRANSLATOR GARY SMITH Tell us something about your background, education, travels. I’m originally an Essex boy and yes, I’ve heard all the jokes. After student interrailing and a year in France, I came to Spain after graduating in the UK, travelling with a friend in a Mini. I spent my first year in Murcia, thinking all of Spain was like that (cacti and sunshine). I had a good time there; the people were very friendly (I still have friends there) and the food was great. Then I went to live in a small village in the Pyrenees, where I discovered how huge the cultural and geographic differences are in Spain. They only spoke Catalan there, so I had to learn it, which is now useful to me. Then I spent a few years in Barcelona before finally getting fed up of big city life and coming to Valencia. Describe a translator’s typical working week. Hmm…I don’t think there IS a typical translator, haha. That’s one of the things I like about my job; there are so many weird and wonderful people involved. You have to remember that translators specialize in different fields. I often get

asked, “How many languages do you speak?”, but the real question should be, “What do you translate?” to which my answer would be, “Scientific and legal texts, among others”. Although there are translation agencies, most translators around the world are freelance. The upside to that is obviously your freedom; the downside is you have to be disciplined and have some business nous to find clients who need you. Our clients are a combination of agencies and direct clients. A typical week? Again, there’s nothing typical: some weeks you have too much work, others too little, but once you have a steady stream of regular clients you can more or less plan your working calendar and holidays. I love being my own boss, and translation gives me the chance to travel for congresses and meet and work with people from all over the world. I don’t like getting calls from Australia at 3 a.m., though, so I switch my phone off at night! I also like working from home. Years ago, I used to have to travel quite a bit by car (as interpreters do), but now I switch on the radio in the morning and listen to the traffic news

with schadenfreude as I start work. Even so, you have to get out the house and get some exercise, meet friends and so on to avoid becoming a hermit. You constantly have to learn new things in this job, too, which for me is definitely a bonus – being paid to learn stuff. Of course, it’s more interesting when you get a text about cosmology than about financial accounting. Another great advantage is that to a certain extent you can take your work with you – I love taking my netbook to a peaceful café on the beach to work! But you have to draw the line and remind your clients that you’re not available 24/7 (unless they’re prepared to pay a hefty surcharge). How do you find Valencia as a place to live and work? On paper, I’d say it’s perfect. As I said, I don’t like living in very big cities. You can cross Valencia by bike or roller blades easily, since it’s flat and usually sunny (I have a car but I never use it in the city). There’s always plenty happening so I never get bored. I also like the fact that the countryside is so near, as well as the beach. I’ve often lived near

the sea throughout my life and I feel the need to see the horizon once in a while. After living in a city, people forget there is actually a world beyond these mazes of concrete.

As for work, at least in my profession I find Valencians generally to be quite professional. The only thing that bugs me sometimes is the bureaucracy and costs involved with being self-employed, but I think that everyone complains about that all over Spain, not just me. How do you see the future for Spain?

Tell us about translation events you have been involved with. Well, I’m very active with the Valencia Region association of translators and interpreters, ‘La Xarxa’ (www.xarxativ.es). We organize workshops and even social gatherings to see each other in the flesh once in a while as opposed to via Skype, and defend and promote the profession and the translators and interpreters themselves in various ways. I organized a fairly big congress in Valencia a few years ago, where people came from all over Spain and even Europe, but I’d like to do something similar in English to attract more international linguists. I think Valencia is the perfect city for congresses – and I’ve been to a lot! In fact, there’s quite a big one this month called Valenguando. I’ll be speaking there about sci-

For me personally it looks relatively OK, but there seems to be a whole young generation of people that has fallen through the cracks of the economic crisis. The “precariat”, as Guy Standing would call them: people who’ve only ever known temporary or part-time jobs, or working in the shadow economy. They’re not represented by the unions (who only cater to salaried employees) and seem to have a very shaky situation as per social security cover, pensions and so on. Come to think of it, I don’t see how the Spanish pension system can possibly survive to when I’m at retirement age; I’m afraid it’s going to be everyone looking out for themselves by then. The future looks pretty bleak for the younger generation and they seem to be very disillusioned with politicians and ‘the system’ in general, which seems to have failed them and abandoned them to their fate.

You still see a lot of empty ‘new’ housing (in other words, a few years old but unsold). I think they’ll have to end up knocking a lot of it down if nobody can afford it, or else the bottom will truly fall out of the market, as perhaps it should. To be honest, with this panorama I don’t think Spain will come out of its recession for a few years yet. I hope I’m wrong, of course, but at least Spain is a country where you can live fairly well on quite little in terms of good food and a healthy lifestyle. SPAIN LOOKING TO RETAIN THE WORLD CUP IN BRAZIL With the European Cup in Real Madrid’s hands and the league title going the way of Atlético Madrid, attention in Spain turned swiftly to the 2014 World Cup. A provisional squad of 30 players was submitted to FIFA on 15 May, which will then be whittled down to 23 before the start of the tournament. This prestigious event that comes around every four years takes place this year in Brazil, with 32 teams competing for the most coveted prize in football from 12 June – 13 July. Holders Spain, have been drawn in group B alongside Australia, Chile, and the Netherlands. The Spanish team has no current Valencia players in the squad, although it does boast former idols Albiol, Alba, Silva, Mata and David Villa in the squad line-up. There is also Valencia interest amongst the Chile contingent where Eduardo Vargas, who joined Los Chés on loan from Napoli in January, will be on the plane to Brazil, alongside La Liga companions Claudio Bravo of Real Sociedad and Francisco Silva of relegated Osasuna.

Australia’s most famous player is arguably Tim Cahill, the former Everton star, who now plies his trade in America, whilst the Netherlands have a plethora of household names that includes Arjen Robben, Robin van Persie and Wesley Sneijder. The match-up between Spain and the Netherlands, a repeat of the 2010 final in South Africa, will take place on the second day of the tournament at the Arena Fonte Nova in Salvador, and could go a long way in determining the positions in this group. This could be of major importance in the later rounds, as the winners are then likely to initially avoid Brazil in the knockout stages. Brazil are heavy favourites to win Group A. There is no Kaká this time around and the Valencia duo of Diego Alves and Jonas Gonçalves were also not selected. Neymar, Dani Alves and Marcelo will be expected to star on home soil and the opposition of Cameroon, Croatia and Mexico should provide little trouble. Cameroon include Stéphane Mbia, who scored the injury – time goal for Sevilla to knock Valencia out of the semi-finals of the Europa League, and his teammate Ivan Rakitić will be hoping to forge a partnership with Luka Modrić to give the Balkans another successful World Cup campaign. Mexico could also get to the later stages if Javi Hernández finds his goal touch and gets success from the crosses Andrés Guardado and Giovani dos Santos are capable of supplying.

Group C is difficult to call with Colombia, Greece, Japan and the Ivory Coast pitted against each other. Elche star Carlos Sánchez will be hoping to make the final cut for Colombia, and another Sevilla star, Carlos Bacca is expected to figure strongly for the South Americans. Greeks still remember their amazing 2004 Euro campaign when they won the competition as 150 – 1 outsiders. Of local interest for Levante fans will be the performance of defender Loukas Vyntra who had a decent season for Los Granotas. Didier Drogba and Wilfried Bony will lead the line for the attack – minded Ivory Coast whilst the discipline of the Japanese squad make them difficult to beat in any international game they participate in. Group D sees more Levante interest. Goalkeeper Keylor Navas could be very busy but will be hoping to give the Costa Ricans a clean sheet against the Italians, the English and the Uruguayans. The world stage will be waiting with anticipation on which superstar, Mario Balotelli, Wayne Rooney, or Luis Suárez will shine for his respective country. That could be the difference between which team advances or goes home early disappointed. Group E has a more sedate look to it. France, if they are mentally prepared, should be too strong for Switzerland, Honduras and Ecuador. Both Adil Rami and Jérémy Mathieu failed to make the squad, but in Real Sociedad’s Antoine Griezmann they have a

twentyfoursevenvalencia 37 match winner who will be firmly in the ‘shop window’ for all the big – spending European clubs. Ecuador will rely on mainly players from their own league, although Manchester United’s Antonio Valencia could pose one or two problems for their opponents’ defences, whilst Honduras will hope for a respectable campaign and a victory along the line somewhere. Switzerland could be the other team to qualify from this group with France, and Philippe Senderos will be hoping to take the good form he has shown with Valencia going into the tournament. He should get good support from Shaqiri of Bayern Munich and former Manchester City star Gelson Fernandes, who is now with SC Freiburg in Germany. Argentina are favourites to claim Group F over Bosnia and Herzegovina, Iran and Nigeria. Leo Messi has yet to perform well in a World Cup and his subdued form this season for Barcelona does not bode well. However, Argentina have match winners in every position so expect them to go far. Former Valencia stars Fernando Gago and Éver Banega may well be vying for the same spot in the team.

Bosnia and Herzegovina have a fine goalkeeper in Begović of Stoke City and a world class forward in Edin Dzeko, but arguably lack the depth of squad to go far in the competition. Nigeria have performed well in past World Cups and the Super Eagles have quality in the Premier League trio of John Obi Mikel, Victor Moses and Peter Odemwingie. Iran, like Honduras in the previous group, will be looking for a respectable campaign and Spanish eyes are hoping that UD Las Palmas star Masoud Shojaei will be a regular starter in the group games. Group G has an interesting look with Germany, Ghana, Portugal and the USA drawn to play each other. It would be unconceivable to think that Germany will not have its usual solid campaign. The Valencia pair Ricardo Costa and João Pereira could be at the heart of the Portuguese defence and Michael Essien is still capable of pulling strings in midfield for the Africans. USA are always dangerous customers in any sport and their own league has become much stronger in recent years. Any one of the three teams would expect to advance with Germany to the next phase, so two nations

are going to be left disappointed early on in the competition. Group H will match the final four teams, Algeria, South Korea, Belgium and Russia against each other. Belgium are the dark horses for the event. With an abundance of individual talent, they look a match for anyone on paper. If they can bond well as a team, expect a long campaign for this small nation. Russia, under Fabio Capello, are solid but predictable. All their squad are now based with clubs in Russia and adapting to the Brazilian climate could prove difficult. South Korea could cause a surprise, as could Algeria, who will have Valencia starlet Sofiane Feghouli expected to start all games, barring injury or suspension. Finally, if you are superstitious and looking for a bet, England may be the way to go. The last time the English won the World Cup, in 1966, Atlético Madrid won the league, Real Madrid won the European Cup, Betis were relegated and Deportivo La Coruña were promoted. Oh, and Austria won the Eurovision song contest. Now there’s a thought!!!

THE FESTIVAL SEASON HAS BEGUN! Welcome back peeps!!! Just before we begin I would like to take this chance to say that this article has been cowritten with a good friend of mine, DJ Recho (Koh Tao / The Hole Music), and without his expert knowledge of the Spanish festival scene, a lot of you readers wouldn’t have ever known that most of these events were even on…..SO A BIG THANKS TO YOU RECHO, YOU DA MAN, MOFO!!;) In the great words of the Joker…..AND HERE WE GO!!!!!!! The festival summer season starts with one of the best music events from our country, Sónar, which takes place in Barcelona from 12 – 14 June. Huge artists and bands such as Plastikman, Massive Attack, Flux Pavilion, Rudimental and Bonobo are playing at this contemporary and vanguard music festival. Another interesting thing about Sónar is that apart from the quantity of concerts you can see, there are the Off parties too!!!These are organised by local clubs and important music labels from all around the world such as Cocoon Recordings, VIVa Warriors, Desolat, M-nus and Hot Creations in clubs as Razzmatazz and City Hall during the days when the festival takes place. At the end of June, another electronic music festival takes place, the brand new 4every1 Festival. This one includes DJs of lots of different styles, such as Martin Garrix, Danny Ávila, Ricardo Villalobos, Maceo Plex, Paco Osuna, Gary Beck or Octave One. It takes place at ‘Ciudad del Rock’ in Aranda del Rey on the 28th of June. After this, July hits us with LOADSSSSS more festivals;)))))) Here in Valencia, we are having two during the first fortnight!!!! On 5 July, Valencia promoter Privée Group is organizing the summer version of its well – known Privée Summer Festival, where lots of underground techno and house DJs are going to play, including Manu Vulcano and many more to be confirmed. It takes place at MultiEspai La Punta, near the City of Arts & Sciences. The following week a new EDM & techno festival called Marenostrum is taking place at Valencia’s Port. This is a daytime festival on 12 – 13 July and DJs such as Quintino, New

24/7 VALENCIA World Sound and Supernova have already been confirmed, but lots more still have to be announced. Hold your horses festival fans, July hasn’t finished yet!!! Bilbao BBK Live also takes place on 10 – 12 July. Bands and artists such as Franz Ferdinand, Phoenix, the Prodigy, Bastille, the Black Keys and MGMT will be playing in Bilbao during these days. Festivaholics are living a dilemma nowadays because two of the biggest music events are taking place on more or less the same dates. These two are FIB 14 (just 45 minutes up the coast in Benicàssim) and Monegros Desert Festival. If you prefer music bands you must go the FIB and be present at the Tini Tempah, Kasabian, Libertines and M.I.A concerts (from 17 – 20 July). On the other hand, if you prefer non-stop rave parties, you MUST go to Monegros Desert Festival (19th of July) on its 20th anniversary with amazing DJs such as Carl Cox, Boys Noize, Dave Clarke, Skrillex, Jamie Jones and Chris Liebing. Incredible artists in an unforgettable scenario….NICE;) Indie – electronic lovers should know that other alternative groups such as Kaiser Chiefs, the Hives, Leon Benavente, Vetusta Morla and Massive Attack are also playing in Benidorm at the Low Cost Festival during 25 – 27 July. So if you are still reading this it means that you’ve survived the first part of the festival summer season!! GET IN!! But there’s one more month for dancing, drinking and listening to astonishing DJs and bands!! On 1 – 2 August, Electrobeach in Benidorm is going to be on again with lots of techno DJs such as Paul Kalkbrenner, Deep Dish, Alan Fitzpatrick, Spherical Coordinates, Nina Kraviz, Paul Ritch, Luciano and Carl Craig who are gonna explode Electrobeach’s sound systems!! It’s the fifth time that this event will have taken place in Benidorm and each year more people come from all around the world to have fun in the sun baby, yeah!! During the same days another famous festival takes place called Arenal Sound in Burriana (29 July – 3 August). This year artists / bands such as Boys Noize, Biffy Clyro, Die Antwoord, the Wombats and Miles Kane are playing there

for thousands of ‘Sounders’. I must choose between one of these two festivals and it’s not going to be easy, but I think when push comes to shove, I’ll probably choose Electrobeach, but both are kick ass! That’s not the only dilemma festivaholics have got. The following weekend, on 8 – 9 August, another two electronic festivals are happening in Spain, Aquasella (Asturias) and Dreambeach (Almería), and each has got an amazing lineup. Aquasella has got a more techno one, with DJs such as Paul Kalkbrenner, Sven Väth, Ben Sims and Blawan, whereas Dreambeach will have lots of huge techno DJs such as Marco Carola, Richie Hawtin and Adam Beyer, but also some EDM artists like Armin Van Buuren, Knife Party and W&W and other interesting headliners such as Snoop Dogg. Yes, that’s right, THE ONE AND ONLY SNOOP DOGGY DOGG, aka Snoop Lion (when he is singing in reggae rap). So… what you will do? Which will you choose? Finally, Rototom Sunsplash is going to be held in Benicàssim from 16 – 23 August. Reggae, roots, dancehall, rocksteady, ska and lots more genres will be banging out at Benicassim during those dates. Headliners such as Sean Paul, Jimmy Cliff, Busy Signal, Femi Kuti (son of Afrobeat legend Fela Kuti) and Beenie Man are coming, personally this is one of my favourites…lots and lots of fun in the sun;) Also last but not least, DOM SCOTT and friends and JTLTD PROMOTIONS will be having their sunset summer sessions every Saturday during the months of June through to September. Starting from 14.00h (2.00 pm), they will be serving great affordable food and playing amazing deep house music under the sun next to the beach until 20.30h in the evening at LAYDOWN (El Puerto). HONESTLY, WHAT MORE COULD YOU WANT??? So there you have it!! I promised you a full round-up of what to expect and look forward to over the next few months in and around Spain, you can’t say you weren’t told in time, so get planning those summer camper van trips now, and buy your tickets before they all are sold out!!!
