ILLUSTRATION BY JAMES WILSON James studied at the University of Plymouth (back when the art campus was in Exeter) and graduated with a BA Hons in Design: Illustration in the summer of 2007. Shortly after that, he moved to Bristol, built up his portfolio a bit, set up a website and won the Don’t Panic “Design The Pack” competition. He is currently working as a freelance illustrator and designer. He’s inspired by many different things, from album cover artwork, to indie comics and has a preference for anything hand-drawn that shows a human touch. Artists he’s into at the moment include James Jean, Billie Jean and French, there are a whole load more but he says he’s rubbish with names. Bocabar at Paintworks in Bristol plays host to a fashion show in aid of the STOP campaign (Solve This Ongoing Problem) which aims to fight gun and knife crime in UK cities. The STOP FOR FASHION event will be a chance for local businesses and boutiques to network and showcase their wares as well as showing their support for this campaign. The fashion show will also use local models and takes place on 30 April.

THE NME RADAR TOUR hits Bristol on 30 April with a gig at The Thekla. The annual showcase of new music will include headline sets from synth princess La Roux, who we interviewed on our website last month.

Support comes from everyone’s favourite disco titans Heartbreak, saviours of the indie dance floor Magistrates and Teeside’s grizzliest new quartet The Chapman Family.

Congratulations to Plymouth based photographer JOAKIM BORÉN, who won Best Newcomer at the Media Innovation Awards, which took place in Bristol in March. The Swedish born photographer studied at the University of Plymouth and graduated in 2005 with a BA Hons in Design Photography, and we’re proud to have been able to work with Joakim on this month’s fashion shoot.

Devon band THE RUMBLE STRIPS are currently putting the finishing touches to their second album, working with Mark Ronson. Their current tour hits the region at the start of April, with a date in Cardiff at Clwb Ifor Bach on 1 April, The Cavern in Exeter on 2 April, and a show at the Thekla in Bristol on 6 April.

Motion BMX Comp

Heads up BMXers out there, a competition is being held at Motion Skate Park in Bristol on 11 April. From 10am – 4pm, there will be competitions, demos, graffiti, BMX screenings, stalls, a BBQ and various food stalls, as well as performances from Dig for Fire, Nova Robotics, Lenny Savage and more to be announced. With categories for 14 and under, 14 – 18 and 18 + there’s a place for everyone to show off their skills (with loads of prizes on offer including a set of Nikes for the winner of each category!).

This spring the Royal West Of England Academy in Bristol is hosting a major show of new work by the city’s best known and most successful graffiti and street artists.

Crimes Of Passion is the first major show of its kind in the city since the Arnolfini’s groundbreaking 1985 show, Graffiti Art and is a celebration of the city’s rich and diverse contemporary scene.

Bristol has nurtured many of the UK’s most successful graffiti and street artists, including 3D, Inkie, Banksy, Nick Walker, Sickboy and TCF Crew, to name a few and the city continues to be a breeding ground for a wealth of exceptional creative talent and continues to have one of the UK’s most diverse and thriving scenes.

The exhibition takes place until 2 May at Royal West of England Academy, Queens Road, Clifton.

NEWS Vans x French Launch at Fifty Fifty

Get a soulful with Donuts and Falling Up Donuts and Falling Up, two of the city’s hottest club nights, have joined forces to bring you an extra special event featuring Bristol debuts from two of the most exciting and trailblazing artists currently representing the worldwide soulful underground.

They bring you a live PA from US singer, songwriter, composer, musician and producer Muhsinah (who is fresh from touring with Common) and a DJ set from respected London based producer Morgan Zarate (Spacek Soundsystem), whose dirty, thick, sticky beats and heavyweight collaborations with artists like Raphael Saddig will leave you gasping for more! They’re joined by Bristol based MC/ singer Shadz – a rising grime/dubstep/funky/soulful star with real skill on the mic, whether it be laying down smooth vocals or killing it with bars. Beatbox champs in Bristol

The Bristol heat of the Vauxhall Beatbox Championships lands at The Croft next month after heats in Newcastle and Nottingham. On 23 May, from 10pm – 2am, judges Archangel and Hobbit will preside over the competitors as they battle it out for a place in the finals in London on 20 June. Hosted

by Stig of the Dump, the event will see performers flexing their vocal chords for the chance to win a brand new Vauxhall Corsa SXi worth £12,700.

French is an artist from South East England.

He draws finely detailed, dark artwork, and is influenced by a love of heavy metal, history and storytelling. Vans are the ever so cool footwear brand who like to bring out exclusive collaborations with some of the best musicians and artists around. The launch for the Vans/French collabo takes place on 4 April at the brand new exhibition space below the legendary Fifty Fifty skate store on Park Street in Bristol. Vans have helped Fifty Fifty transform the basement space into an open area perfect for exhibitions. The exhibition for the Vans x French launch will be up for one month and is a collection of previously unseen work, and new pieces especially for this show. Each piece is available to buy along with limited edition silk screen prints. Plans are underway for an after party to top the night off, check vans.co.uk for updates.

Get passionate at Ignite Ignite events were started in Seattle, USA, in 2006 as a networking tool for creatives, web enthusiasts, and entrepreneurs. A place to share knowledge and passion in a relaxed atmosphere, Ignite talks are completely free and open to the public. Talks are given by anyone who wants to address the crowd, and the only constraints are that they must use no more than 20 slides, each lasting 15 seconds. The speaker has exactly five minutes to broadcast their idea, which can be anything they like, from an innovative way of using Facebook to how to make the perfect paper aeroplane. There is an Ignite event in Cardiff at the Sodabar on Mill Lane on 8 April, brought to you by Lonely Planet, Nocci, and Cardiff Web Scene. Award winning South West based folk musician SETH LAKEMAN has announced a gig at Komedia Bath on 3 June. He has been credited with bringing folk music to a new generation with his skilful violin playing and haunting and energetic vocals. MAXIMO PARK bring their brand of jagged yet melodic, punky yet pop, intelligent yet wildly infectious rock to Bristol Academy on 28 May ahead of the release of their third album, on which they have used more extreme synths and “dreamier” guitars. Sounds thrilling!

They say time flies when you’re having fun, if you want proof, just take a look at South Wales’ legendary promoters of the same name who have recently celebrated their 15th birthday. Having been responsible for some of the biggest events ever to happen in South Wales at amazing venues like the City Hall and Coopers Field in central Cardiff, and more recently at Glam, Liquid and Life, we though it was time to find out a little more about Henry Blunt, the man behind Time Flies...

What’s your fantasy line-up?

Time flies indeed – you recently celebrated your 15th birthday. How did everything kick off for you with the clubnight?

It all started in 1992 when I moved to Cardiff from Manchester and hooked up with other like-minded people. We started a night called Spice of Life at Cardiff Uni in 1993 and then launched Time Flies in the Coal Exchange and City Hall buildings in 1994 – it took off overnight pretty much and hasn’t stopped since.

How did your spin offs in the Valleys come about and what exactly do they involve?

I’ve done nights in the Valleys from time to time over the years – it usually happens when I’m offered a venue up there. The locals create a great atmosphere, that’s for sure – no airs and graces, just a solid party vibe.

Does being based in Cardiff help or hinder things, and if so, how?

You need to be around the city you promote in to keep an eye on the promotion and to be part of the vibe that surrounds any scene. I did however benefit from being based in London in the late nineties when I promoted all the Mixmag parties as well as Time Flies. Having that distance for a period allowed me to see the wood for the trees and I enjoyed some anonymity there too, which was cool.

What are the biggest highlights for you to date?

Time Flies being broadcasted live on BBC Radio1 back in 2001 was pretty special – 4000 people in the Ice Rink giving a massive shout out when Pete Tong announced we were live on air will remain with me forever. And finally opening our own club GLAM this year to coincide with our 15th Birthday is a massive highlight too.

Any low points?

The Millennium New Years Eve was about as low as you can get – but it gave clubland the reality check it desperately needed and a good kick up the arse.

Can you tell us about your funniest moment at an event?

I once promoted at a venue where there was an electric wall by the dancefloor. We would set up the stage behind the wall and then at the given moment the wall would go up to reveal the surprise special live act to a packed crowd of clubbers. One night we had the Happy Mondays on and the wall got stuck half way up so the clubbers were only able to see the band from their knees down for the first couple of tunes until the electrician arrived!

What is the secret to being a long lasting promoter – you’ve been around longer than most!

Learn how to switch off from promoting otherwise it will do your swede in.

Is there anything you’d do differently if you had the chance to do it all again?

No not really – if I’d been a DJ rather than a promoter I’d probably have retired by now though, ha ha!

If you weren’t doing this, what would you be doing?

God knows – something creative but very peaceful – like marking out football pitches…

Any advice for aspiring promoters out there?

Focus on your own nights rather than worrying about what’s going on up the road.

By dint of their self-proclaimed (and oftexclaimed) amorality, Atlanta’s Black Lips’ every debauched episode can only do them favours. Ass-baring in India, drugs, piss-play, and songs like ‘Let It Grow’ that seem to be taking the band’s insistence on authentic ‘60s lo-fi scuzz to the point of pastiche. But once again the psychedelic swamp-rats succeed because there’s a slop bucketful of songs here that are rife with garage menace and hazy, 13th Floor Elevator swagger.

Mama, I’m Swollen (Saddle Creek)

It’s hard not to feel like a voyeur when listening to Cursive. Tim Kasher’s deeply personal candour can leave you dropjawed and teary-eyed in one fell stroke.

‘Mama…’ is another stride away from what’s come before and it takes a while for the album to settle into one’s psyche but, once there, it’s a treasure. And ‘Mama, I’m Satan’ is always on hand to put the gristle back on the bone with neat lyrical joys like “The world was built on a tickle between our legs”. Darkly delectable.

Folk collective from Canada deliver a Propagandhi second album, with 14 near-perfect songs, Supporting Caste reminiscent of the late 60s/early 70s.

This has been around for a minute but still deserves more attention. Producer Brook D’Leau and singer Miss Jack Davey caused a bit of a stir with this double offering when people first heard it. Ranging from electronic hip hop to soul to pop to some freaky other sh+t, breathy hot-under-the-collar singing and some VERY nice beats are what stand out here. It’s a great stereotype smashing collection of tunes I could lazily say has the spirit of everything from Bettty Davis, Grace Jones, and Parliament to playfulness of Tribe Called Quest and Tom Tom Club running through it. Seek it.

When Machines Exceed Human Intelligence (Warp)

Mark Prichard returns to Warp with his latest project. Around the hip hop template of some of his previous output, Mark adds bass music pressure, computer game/sci-fi aesthetics, vintage techno synths and a more Dilla style swing. Detroit MCs Phat Kat and Elzie add further connection to The Motor City on one of the only two vocal tracks, the other features long-time collaborator Steve Spacek. The production is pristine, exquisite and bass heavy, so much depth its almost scientific.

An Indie guitar-based band here and influenced by the likes of Pink Floyd, Happy Mondays, Rush and Nick Drake, you can definitely hear the Manchester in the music with Dove Stone. With a few less synth’s in the recordings they would be a warmer sounding outfit for me. Contained within are tonnes of nostalgic synth sounds fused with live drums and Mark King ( Level 42 ) style bass playing.

It’s a weird mixture and a little angular for me but I can appreciate that the bass player is a well established musician but there’s a little too much focus on that for me. Drawing inspiration from old National Geographics, 60’s handicraft books and patchwork quilts, Lindsey’s playful and evocative collages have a timeworn quality. Letting his acrylics rest in their tubes, the normally colourful Bjorn is using this exhibition as a chance to focus his efforts on pure drawing, working in pen and ink, pencil and charcoal.

Despite the monochrome hues, his exquisite pictures of curious characters, mysterious trees and strange situations are as vibrant as ever.
