Shortly after that, he moved to Bristol, built up his portfolio a bit, set up a website and won the Don’t Panic “Design The Pack” competition. He is currently working as a freelance illustrator and designer. He’s inspired by many different things, from album cover artwork, to indie comics and has a preference for anything hand-drawn that shows a human touch. Artists he’s into at the moment include James Jean, Billie Jean and French, there are a whole load more but he says he’s rubbish with names. NEWS Vanucci signs tracks Aldo Vanucci, (247 columnist/ interviewer, tireless promoter, artist and remixer and Plymouth’s 14th Best DJ) has just signed a track to AV8 Records, the same label who were responsible for Fatman Scoop’s Be Faithful and Crooklyn Clan’s Lets Get Ill. He’s also signed four tracks to US label Bastard Jazz. Aldo is a constant on the music scene down in Plymouth and is responsible for the ever funky Monday clubnight, Wonkey Legs. He’s worked with Fatboy Slim, gets namechecks from Steve Lamaq and Gilles Peterson, and it’s alleged that he enjoys a good pipe and slippers of an evening. Ever so cool. 247 and Phonic FM’s Rock Show hook up!

The Rock Show on Exeter’s Phonic106.8FM is celebrating its first birthday on 3 April and they want to know your favourite Classic Rock Track Of All Time for their weekly Friday night slot.

The Rock Show’s Mike James told us, “It’s been a crazy year. Hip hop at The Office, Truro

Cornwall has never been famous for being at the forefront of the hip hop scene but The Office Nightclub in Truro is taking action to step things up with their monthly hip hop night. Kicking things off on 6 April with DJ Scuff (two time UK DMC Battle For Supremacy finalist and Slickbeatz World DJ Battle League Runner Up 2007) vs DJ True (Madlove DJs) for a turntablism battle extravaganza, with support from resident DJ Booney. Doors open 9pm – 2am and it’s £5 to get in. The Office have loads more on this month, including a a Miami/Cuban night on 10 April, hosted by DeluxX, so get your shades on and hit the town, there’s also a student night every Wednesday in April and 17 & 24 April are alternative music nights. Plymouth band THE VAN DANIELS are through to the semi finals of a Battle Of The Bands competition run buy Bugbear, one of London’s longest running promoters. The competition is in aid of Treehouse, a London based charity for children with Autism, and the overall winner of the event will play a very special gig at Koko in London to support the charity. NEWS Barbican International Jazz & Blues Festival After the success of last year’s Barbican International Jazz & Blues Festival, the event is back again in May. That means another 10 days of music and performance, taking place over venues across Plymouth’s historic quayside area, The Barbican. The music line-up includes new-blues, fresh jazz, tranquil instrumentalism and rowdy swing. The Official Festival HQ is the B-bar – the cosy theatre-café-bar in the entrance to the Barbican Theatre.

The other venues include The Barbican Theatre, The Watering Hole, Bacaro, The Blues Bar and Grill, The Refectory, The Elizabethan Gardens and The Royal Plymouth Corinthian Yacht Club. Acts announced include Canadian harmonica-playing, beatboxing, Fedora-wearing one-man-blue band Son of Dave and Big Chill/Glastonbury favourites Portico Quartet. Breakin’ Convention

Breakin’ Convention hits the Theatre Royal next month for a convention with a hip hop twist, showcasing dance companies and artists from around the world. The convention is no ordinary night at the theatre, and has been getting rave reviews at sell out shows in London. This is the only date in the South West for this show, which will include workshops, graff jams, DJ demos, freestyling and film screenings from 22 – 23 May 2009. Three top international hip hop acts will also perform as part of the festival, including VII Gems Rock Dance Division which will feature an exclusive UK performance from “the epitome of the b-boy” and hip hop dance pioneer Ken Swift.

Run by local clothing brand Slut, Love Riot is a Cornish club night which regularly takes place at a variety of the county’s finest venues.

With a firm commitment to providing the best music and dance floor action around, Love Riot regularly plays host to international superstar DJ’s as well as the best local DJ’s. The Junction on Mutley Plain in Plymouth holds it’s CHARITY ROCKFEST on 11 April. The fest kicks off at 1pm with a set from Growledge. Eleven bands are crammed into eleven hours of rock, and The Orkid, Circus of Sound and Kernuyck all make appearances, with The Jack playing the last set at 11pm. DMC DJ competition heads for Plymouth The Technics DMC competition sees DJs take to the decks to show off their skills, and it was first launched back in 1983. The regional finals of this year’s competition are set to take place at The White Rabbit at Bretonside Bus station on 25 April with an international line up sure to impress even the most discerning hip hop heads. The South West regional finals are one of only five national tour dates around the UK that include Manchester, Southhampton, Birmingham and London, with the final to be held at the O2 in London later on in the year. This is a rare opportunity to see some of the worlds finest hip hop DJs and turntablists and should not be missed! The Plymouth heats will be hosted by the world famous 1989 DMC champion Cutmaster Swift (flying in especially from the USA), with support from national champions DJ Skully (DMC UK Champion 2002/2008) & DJ Switch (World Battle Champion) local acts The Scribes and DJs XL, Bossa and Jimmy-Tee. AfternoonTee is back!

Next month, mini festival Afternoon-Tee.co.uk returns to Plymouth for another day packed with music, art and fashion. Held at the University of Plymouth’s Student Union on 10 May, this eclectic event includes a sample sale with small, niche brands from all over the UK like Applied, Amplotude and Channel 3 selling their wares (often limited edition samples or end of line garmets at crunch busting prices). Music ranges from indie to hip hop, and funk to breakbeat, with performances throughout the day from the likes of DJ Madskillz vs MC Lacey (The Scribes) and DJ Pandamonium (Technics DMC Southwest regional Heats winner 2008).

Words: Lauren Taverner Brown Plymouth band Scientist The Orange Pip have been making decent sized ripples in the South West music scene for a while, but it is this month that they steer the good ship Pip into deeper waters. The band have taken on the challenge of playing a live soundtrack to Martin Crimp’s modern adaptation of The Misanthrope, a 17th century social commentary by French playwright Moliere, with the assistance of musical director John Ward (JMW Band/The Bedroom Project). Their blog tells us; “Our job is to take some pop songs and mess with them to try to define a line between what is and what is not credible, musically and morally. The performers will be acting and speaking to the rhythm, tempo and beat of our music.” Performed by members of the Theatre Royal Young Company, the play is described as a dark, biting comedy accompanied by a fresh indy soundtrack. The band will be on stage during the performance, which is a witty, playful exploration of the blurred boundaries in modern life between good and bad in art, culture and morality. The main character, Alceste, is sick of a world infatuated with celebrity, and struggles with the fact that he is in love with a young film star – the pin up for the world he despises. 247 chats to Jake Mullin (drums), Richard Thomas (bass), Lucas Webster (vox, guitar) and Stephen Fry (guitar) about life on a different kind of stage…

247: How did you get involved in doing the music for The Misanthrope?

Stevie: John thought a band of our experience and style would be able to apply ourselves to performance art. I guess he felt we were an appropriate band to choose for the job!

Rich: We have talked amongst ourselves about getting involved with performance before but have never had the opportunity before, and we have also spoken briefly with John about doing stuff with his own theatre company. So when this came up John knew we’d be up for it.

247: Were any of you familiar with The Misanthrope before this project began?

Rich: No, but we have since read the script and the ideas and concept is very interesting, and entertaining.

247: Can you explain the idea behind you soundtracking this play?

Lucas: The idea of soundtracking the play is to help modernise it with new music and to have the band as an accompaniment to the performance and story. The music we are playing is to help explain the plot.

Stevie: Yeah, and music is performance art as much as theatre is, which we are trying to back up with this production.

247: What have you done to prepare for this project?

Rich: Press ups, mainly Jake: Yep, press ups, sit ups and jack knives!

Rich: Jack knives?!

Lucas: What the hell’s a Jack knife?!

Jake: demonstrates Stevie: Stampeding! The yeehaw game and loads of exercises with the Young Company to get more involved

with their way of thinking as actors.

Jake: And listening to the songs, and rehearsing at TR2 of course...

247: How has it been different preparing music for a play, rather than a gig or an album recording session?

Stevie: We’ve had to adjust song structures and instrumentation to fit with the plays scenes and dynamic structures.

We already have tunes and chord progressions to work with, so the creativity and skill is applied in our sound and communication.

Rich: also, we are essentially learning to play pop songs for this project. Our own songs don’t tend to do the versechorus thing, so in that sense it’s pretty different.

247: What sort of audience is this play directed at?

Lucas: I think the audience is meant to be as broad as possible really.

Stevie: The play brings up arguments that everyone can relate to on one side or the other.

Rich: There are elements in every part of this production for all kinds of people really, from pop culture to arty farty pomposity!

Words: Aldo Vanucci You are playing at both the South West Drum n Bass Awards and Beach Break Live soon, if we miss you there, where else can clubbers of the South West catch you?

I’m doing the Cheltenham Jazz Festival, Blowpop Festival and at Beatz and Bobs in Exeter.

Last time we spoke you told me your new album was more of a return to your roots. What prompted that move?

Well, I have four major loves in music – funk, jazz, disco and latin, those are what inspire me, what make me get creative with samples. I remember when we were kids and were passionate about music, well I’m still like that, I’m still just a kid that gets excited about music, 14 |

excited about making music that kids will get into, and those elements that I sample from cross all colours and creed. On this album there is a lot of 80s feeling music.

I think it’s okay to take a sample that has been used before and flip it, use it differently, or take a track that has been sampled to death and take a different part, you know, use it in a way that no one else has.

Does being a label boss, as well as a DJ and producer change how you view music?

Yeah, definitely, you need to become more critical of what you hear. You have to consider the commercial side of music. Saying that though, a lot of the time I just go with my gut feeling about something, you just have to do what you feel is right.

Download culture, what’s your view on it?

God that a massive question… Well I do believe we should pay for music, it’s someone’s job to create it, and there are studio costs involved and so on. At the moment it’s a time of big change, people think they should get music for free and if people are able to hear my music for free, then at some point if I’m not making money from music, I’d have to charge more for my DJ sets, so the costs to a promoter would go up, then people would have to pay more to see me. It all has a knock on effect.

You live in Brighton, which is awash with DJs, producers and musicians, why do you think that is?

I think the main reason is location, it’s a beautiful place and so close to London that it has become a mini London. It has great club nights, great places to eat and a good infrastructure to make things happen. Also over time what has happened is friends of creatives follow down, so the creative community has just grown and grown.

I miss working in a record shop, I used to enjoy shopping in your record shop in Brighton, and I think that a record shop has always been so much more than just a place to buy music. What’s your fondest memory of record shops?

Exactly what you just said, it was more than just a shop to buy music, you’re constantly talking to people, both customers and people around you. Working there also taught me about business. I was introduced to so much music by others that I wouldn’t have experienced without that shop, I’ve just been in the studio for two days solid with A Skillz working on a new mixtape which half the music on there I wouldn’t have known without those shop years. I also meet lots of people that are my peers now, Norman Cook, Phats & Smalls, I also met a few film stars who were filming in the area. Great times.

Apart from Aldo Vanucci, who would you most like to remix your tracks, and who would you like to remix?

You’re a funny guy…! I think I’d most like High Contrast to mix something of mine, he’s great and always delivers a good product. I’d like to remix something by Kool & the Gang from their 1969 - 1974 period.

Have you ever used the line “do you know who I am” and if so, why?

Never, and I never would. I’m proud of who I am and what I’ve achieved and I’m not an arsehole and I would say if you use that line you are starting towards being one.

I haven’t heard you DJ for ages, but if I left my pipe and slippers at home and came to see you play, what should I expect?

Well I’m always evolving, but I always bring the funk and that never changes. I also use acappellas, drops from Dynamite MC, exclusive intros, all that. I’m constantly trying to better myself, push myself to deliver 110% every time I play, whether that be to 30 people or 30,000.

So much contemporary dance music owes a debt to hip hop, who should we make the cheque payable to?

Well its due to Afrika Bambaataa and Grandmaster Flash, both inspired different areas but they were pretty much the ones.

What’s your favourite break or sample?

That’s a hard one but I would say Chuck Brown and the Soul Searchers ‘Ashley’s Roach Clip’.

Which current producers are floating your boat?

A Skillz is always excellent, Chase & Status are always great, High Contrast, Bird Peterson and Atomic Hooligan.

My favourite slots are warm up sets, now that you are a huge international superstar DJ do you miss playing small clubs or warm up sets?

Yeah I so fucking do. I started off doing small bars an warm up sets, then moved to clubs and now run my own night, but I would really love to do is a Sunday afternoon eight hour set of funk, disco, hip hop and latin set, you know a real education. That would be my ideal set.

I once saw Radiohead play to 30 people when they warmed up for the Sultans of Ping FC at the Pink Toothbrush in Raleigh, I also saw Norman Cook when he did a warm up set at the early days of the Heavenly Social before Leftfield and the Chemical Brothers, who have you seen recently that you feel could go on to be massive?

Crookers, Deekline, Skream and Bird Peterson all have amazing talent and potential for a massive hit record.

If I secretly put you forward for Britain’s Got Talent, apart from DJing, what would your act consist of?

I’d tell jokes, be a comedian, maybe do a breakdance routine…

Would you ever try and do Krafty Kuts Live and who would be in the band?

That’s exactly what I’m working on now. This album has all the best elements of the 80s in it and we are looking at doing it live.

I’ve spent my life doing nothing but music if you could have chosen another career what would it be?

Football manager. I’d get my coaching badges and do that, or maybe player/manager.

At a time like this, when dubstep is pushing recording techniques and creativity to the limit, it’s hard to imagine why anybody even bothers to make this stuff anymore. Old hat.

At times, you’re thinking it’s Idlewild back in their metamorphic stage or a stadium version of Biffy Clyro. Whatever. None of it changes the fact that this debut album is crushingly anthemic, designed to trail heartbreaks and longing, and pretty awesome.

By dint of their self-proclaimed (and oftexclaimed) amorality, Atlanta’s Black Lips’ every debauched episode can only do them favours. Ass-baring in India, drugs, piss-play, and songs like ‘Let It Grow’ that seem to be taking the band’s insistence on authentic ‘60s lo-fi scuzz to the point of pastiche. But once again the psychedelic swamp-rats succeed because there’s a slop bucketful of songs here that are rife with garage menace and hazy, 13th Floor Elevator swagger.

Mama, I’m Swollen (Saddle Creek)

It’s hard not to feel like a voyeur when listening to Cursive. Tim Kasher’s deeply personal candour can leave you dropjawed and teary-eyed in one fell stroke.

‘Mama…’ is another stride away from what’s come before and it takes a while for the album to settle into one’s psyche but, once there, it’s a treasure. And ‘Mama, I’m Satan’ is always on hand to put the gristle back on the bone with neat lyrical joys like “The world was built on a tickle between our legs”. Darkly delectable.

Folk collective from Canada deliver a Propagandhi second album, with 14 near-perfect songs, Supporting Caste reminiscent of the late 60s/early 70s.

(Hassle) Gorgeous melodies, a great production, strings galore and boy-girl harmonies aplenty.

It’s clear to see why Canada’s Propagandhi Woodpigeon’s songwriter, vocalist and top punk rock’s Premier League. They’ve guitarist, Mark Andrew Hamilton is a master at shifted their sound with the shifting sands his craft. His voice has character and his band of the genre, improved their musicianship

in leaps and bounds, and stayed true to an impassioned ideology – anarchist, vegan, humanist, occasionally fatalist – that doesn’t always parry with the fickle nature of punk youth. With plenty of nods to the likes of SNFU, Boysetsfire and early thrash, ‘Supporting Caste’ is another healthy lesson in political and musical perspective.

What comes across in New Amerykah is the use of underground producers to provide the music for Eryah’s unmistakable voice and verse.

Its clearly the doing of an artist invigorated and inspired the by hip hop innovation found in work of Madlib, Sa Ra, Georgia Ann Medrews, Karriem Riggins, 9th wonder and new husband Jay Electronica, who all feature on the album. Invest in it... NOW! Andy Mac

The Beauty in Distortion /Land Of the Lost (Interpendent Media)

This has been around for a minute but still deserves more attention. Producer Brook D’Leau and singer Miss Jack Davey caused a bit of a stir with this double offering when people first heard it. Ranging from electronic hip hop to soul to pop to some freaky other sh+t, breathy hot-under-the-collar singing and some VERY nice beats are what stand out here. It’s a great stereotype smashing collection of tunes I could lazily say has the spirit of everything from Bettty Davis, Grace Jones, and Parliament to playfulness of Tribe Called Quest and Tom Tom Club running through it. Seek it.

Mark Prichard returns to Warp with his latest project. Around the hip hop template of some of his previous output, Mark adds bass music pressure, computer game/sci-fi aesthetics, vintage techno synths and a more Dilla style swing. Detroit MCs Phat Kat and Elzie add further connection to The Motor City on one of the only two vocal tracks, the other features long-time collaborator Steve Spacek. The production is pristine, exquisite and bass heavy, so much depth its almost scientific.

Great, conceptual and futuristic stuff!

DEMOS CREAM OF THE CROP f DEMO OF THE MONTH LEMANIS’ second album, ‘The Truth About Push Me Pull You’, is a sprawling thing of intermittent beauty that demands to be heard again and again. At once psycheindie (‘Museum’), acoustic melancholy (‘Moon Song’), Beach Boys whimsy (‘Go Blonde’) and Ukraine-meets-Dick Dale (‘A Witch’s Dog’), it feels like an avalanche of ideas. Then something startling happens. ‘Across The Bridge’ initiates a four-song concept suite centred around a recurring piano motif, laden with brass and a High Llamas / Polyphonic sense of grandeur that is harrowingly effective; until final song, ‘Mr Mills’, apes Nick Cave before morphing into a sprightly pop-rock skit, like a bloopers reel at the end of a tragic film.

You won’t know whether to laugh or cry. Amidst the confusion they’ve pulled off a masterstroke. lemanis.net

PHONIC FM ROCK SHOW DEMO OF THE MONTH HURON’s Cheyne Stoking doesn’t shy away from hard topics like war, politics and pain. Rising Record’s new release from the Plymouth based outfit looks set to progress this popular South West band on to the national scene. I’ve reviewed Cornwall-based JULIAN GASKELL before, and what a treat it was: all Tom Waits growl and blues-folk madness. Now he’s back with THE RAGGED TROUSERED PHILANTHROPISTS, playing the kind of gnarly, radical folk-punk championed

by Gogol Bordello and Devotchka (or ‘new wave skiffle’ as the band cutely tag themselves). Foot-stomping, accordionled show tunes with a great line in poetic socialism is the order of the day, never more so than on ‘Yuppie Flats’ and ‘The Great Money Trick’: songs that keep the class war alive and kicking.

Although you feel that the Ukrainian-folk of ‘Cingilingibom’ is more righteous celebration than indignation. Awesome. Download their album at... myspace.com/raggedtrouseredphilanthropists Hailing from the Bristol/Exeter hub, NUALA & THE ALCHEMY QUARTET take the earthy folk-roots stylings of Ani DiFranco and imbue it with jazzy arrangements, tinkling ivories and fiddlesome hooks aimed squarely at the hips. Aussie-in-exile, Nuala Honan’s voice runs the gamut from Ani to Edie Brickell to KT Tunstall, with impressive lung power and vocal dexterity. But you feel that Nuala and the band are not playing to their strengths, that they have it within themselves to take risks, subvert expectations and burn with a stronger, wilder flame. Bristol-based producer/songwriter, ILLUSION, aka Cliff Airey, dabbles in all things folksome and trip-hoppy, playing a Within twenty seconds of the first multitude of instruments and manipulating song, it’s patently clear that Newquay’s a library of beats to harness his crossover BUDDIES FOR TEA are hoping to pick up vision. So far, so bedroom. But his album, from where Snow Patrol seemingly left off.

‘Infinite Regress’, displays a keener ear Their EP, ‘Is This Everything You Want It for detail than most sonic scientists, To Be’, is a decent attempt at that kind of especially on the leftfield machinations of mid-paced, emotionally-driven indie rock; ‘Pixel Palette’ and ‘Lights Out’. At times, however, ‘Mission Accomplished’ deploys though, the reliance on atmosphere rather than melody renders the most dated of synth sounds that it’s this kind of acousto-electronica a little less relevant than his sonic hard to reconcile the two. Having said that, I have a huge fondness for late ‘70s Gary Numan so it’s not entirely unwelcome. The two live songs prove that the band can cut it well in the flesh too. All of which indicates that good fortune should visit BFT, as long as they keep at it. myspace.com/buddiesfortea Not ashamed to play up to native stereotypes, Cardiff quartet, TAFFIA, take the essences of dub, blues, hip-hop and rock and drag them through a Cwmbrian hedge backwards ‘til they’re scuffed, tattered, drenched in reverb and devoid of sense. Their album, ‘Soupermarket’, isn’t going to be troubling any national charts soon but what this curious bunch of old blokes lack in substance they make up for with a ludicrous sense of humour revolving around satirical and surreal voice samples, psychiatrics (‘Shrink’), hippy gift shops (er, ‘Hippy Gift Shop’) and religious skepticism (‘Benedictus‘). They also play live in absurd costumes as if the music wasn’t kooky enough. Amusing, sure, but never to be played again. Well, not in this lifetime. myspace.com/taffiamusic

Bennie duly sets off with his girlfriend on a tequila-fuelled trek across the desolate Mexican frontier. Part 1 is a chronicle of the successful uprising in Cuba, tracking Che’s rise from doctor to revolutionary hero. Part 2 sees him take his particular brand of political instability over to Bolivia where he hopes to inspire another revolution. Benicio Del Toro takes on the role of his career so far and injects humanity and brutality into a figure who is almost as much myth as he is reality. Watched together they form one great film and a superb advert for the acting talents of Del Toro.

This is a moody, claustrophobic drama about a blue-collar stiff who stumbles on a stash of money.

He struggles with the moral conundrum of what to do with the money, and then as per usual the police and other interested parties come looking for the money. If it all seems a bit like No Country for Old Men then you would be wrong. Think the Coen Brother’s Oscar winner but remade by Jean Paul Satre and you could come some way to understand this arthouse treat.

Their lineup of amateur cabaret and half-baked comedy looks decidedly lacklustre until a beautiful female entertainer walks into the auditions, and their fortunes start to change. The resulting film is a charming musical comedy that will leave everyone in the audience with that feel-good high as they leave the cinema.

A noisy bunch of fuckers, BROTHERHOOD OF THE LAKE (White Rabbit, Plymouth, 19 Feb). Would we want it any other way? Of course not! The Plymouth metalcore disciples have benefited immensely from adding an extra guitar, allowing for original axeman, Rusty’s dark, tortuous hooks to roam with intent, while Robert Clark’s developed growl has truly come into its own. Check out their debut EP on Glasstone Records.

Indie imprint, Lockjaw, celebrated some of their top talent with a five-band, post-punk extravaganza (White Rabbit, Plymouth, 20 Feb). I turned up late ‘cos I’m stupid but did manage to see Exeter’s KLAY and Plymouth’s CONSOLATION PRIZEFIGHTER bashing out their respective oeuvres to their and our hearts’ content. Klay have come a long way since their inception, and have sharpened their sound into an almighty post-rock weapon that rises and falls with organic grace.

If you don’t like rockabilly you’re an ass-hole. Not my words but the authoritative tones of Barack Obama. Okay, I lied. They’re my words. But it’s still a fact. White Rabbit’s all-dayer was a joy to behold even if Sweden’s THE ASTROLITES didn’t always have the creative acumen to pull off their snarling brand of psychobilly (Plymouth, 21 Feb). So, there were boys bopping with immaculate, pompadour quiffs and vintage jackets. There were girls strolling with Bettie Page bangs and pedal-pushers. And that was just the doormen. London quartet, SLIM SLIP AND THE SLIDERS – now that’s a name, ladies and germs – were on hand to show us how it’s really done with galloping songs, dazzling guitar licks, an authentic ‘50s aura, and a singer who looked like a squished Eddie Cochran.

Not all Belfast bands are immersed in the politics of their hometown.

Take the tremendous AND SO I WATCH YOU FROM AFAR (The Hippo, Plymouth, 25 Feb). Their song titles may allude to something more grass-roots but the instrumental odysseys they weave are extra-terrestrial; delighting in getting to the point quickly, with minimum fuss and maximum post-rock’n’roll intensity. Not since Ennio Morricone has voiceless music been so compelling. Hometown buddies, LAFARO, travelled in a different direction, picking through Mclusky’s leftovers and lacing them with Stoogesesque abandon; while Plymouth’s ARTHUR WALKER supplied artful screechathons tempered by brisk, Futureheads-like choruses.

To raise funds for the Palestine Solidarity Campaign, we, alongside a host of local talent, played some songs (Voodoo Lounge, Plymouth, 27 Feb). HEAD OF PROGRAMMES’ deliciously downbeat, alt country airs were the perfect soundtrack to the harrowing documentary of the Palestinian struggle being shown on the projection screen. JESS BURKE’s gloriously nonchalant delivery of choice soul covers betrayed a genuine talent that needs to be harnessed. Now a trio, FTO made a right hash of their anarcho-speedcore but it only served to endear them closer to our punk rock hearts. Meanwhile, FISHERMANS MISSION proved themselves worthy with electronicaembellished, triple-guitar indie-rock that flitted, at will, between epic and idiosyncratic. Good call.

I couldn’t get to The Bronx show (Clwb Ifor Bach, Cardiff, 3 March) so I asked my trusty friend, Katarina, to pen something: “ROLO TOMASSI were first on, only to be described as ‘interesting’, in the way a chef would politely describe a shit sandwich. FUCKED UP dominated the night, with vocalist, Pink Eyes, stomping around, picking people up and swinging from the ceiling like an infant King Kong with ADHD. Figure in chanting, rowdiness and people joyfully punching themselves and you had the perfect atmosphere before THE BRONX had even struck a note. To sum them up: they played well. Everybody had a great time. I got my love handles out.”

There’s no denying the uber-tech skills of Canada’s PROTEST THE HERO but all their classical subtleties were buried (White Rabbit, Plymouth, 4 March). It may have been the grubby sound, or the bludgeoning nature of support band, THE CHARIOT’s post-Norma Jean, arrhythmic noisecore but nothing connected. At least vocalist, Rody Walker’s confession that he shouts gibberish during the screamo sections of their songs was a moment of endearingly honest deconstruction.

Swansea quintet, THE ARTERIES, powered through brilliantly crafted songs, rafted on two precision guitarists, taking their cue from the likes of The Descendents and Pulley with a nod to vintage Hundred Reasons (White Rabbit, Plymouth, 5 March). And if you can show me a better punk rock song this year than ‘Three Cats’, I’ll piss in my own mouth. Looking dapper in their Exeter Cricket Club threads (joke © Adam Campbell), THE COMPUTERS squawked their punk’n’roll squeal with dribbling phlegm, two-note solos and enjoyably tasteless banter. But where’s the Elvis Costello influence? Come on lads, write a ‘Pump It Up’ for the new millennium!
