Illustration: 'A Cluster of Antelope' by Briony Cloke Much of Plymouth College of Art Illustration graduate Briony Cloke's work features the use of pattern.This piece is called 'A Cluster of Antelope' and was originally a set of three designs that were all influenced by a combination of Kaleidoscope's and Collective Nouns. “I combined some of the kaleidoscope influences within these designs like the triangular shapes and the layout of the animals in the design itself. I then incorporated aspects of the Antelopes' natural habitat – the flowers, plants and leaves for added interest,” explains Briony. The programme isn’t restricted to music and sailing there’s loads going on, including the Animal Bike Tour with pro rider demos, The Red Arrows display, 25th Walking Carnival led by the Falmouth Marine Band, A 25ft climbing wall on the moor (free to use for all ages), Cornwall’s own unique Limpet Games including the worlds shortest Triathlon, Fireworks display, Science in the Square with the University of Exeter and Craft Zone and lots more family friendly activites too. The sailing itself provides top level competitive racing in a fun atmosphere, using a variety of courses during the week. There are many viewing points on the River Fal to see the Carrick Road fleets racing such as the coastal walks around the river. In addition to Soul II Soul, now confirmed to play at Electric Beach, on August 31 at Newquay’s Watergate Bay are UK Dub reggae pioneers Zion Train, Purveyors of the finest Roots Reggae music, the group will be adding the vibrancy of a full acoustic band, dub mixing and quality vocalists. Lusty Glaze Beach, Newquay is fast developing a reputation as an amazing live music venue. The natural amphitheater of this horseshoe shaped cove surrounded by high cliffs makes it not only a beautiful place to see bands, but acoustically fab too. This month there are some great gigs on. July 14th sees Company B play after a tongue in cheek day of Dodgeball awesomeness. Company B, a rowdy 7 piece jump-jive band will be playing music American WWII style – what a brilliant day and evening out for free! Newquay Since 1981 Boardmasters has been an integral part of the British surf scene. From humble beginnings as a small surf competition, the festival has greatly expanded and is now home to the UK’s biggest surf event as well as Cornwall’s biggest music festival. Ash Grunwald We chat to Aussie surf fanatic and blues roots ‘n’ roller, Ash Grunwald, ahead of his South West dates on The Sea Level Tour
Where in Australia did you grown up and where do you live now? I grew up in Melbourne. It was a great blues wise! It was kind of like going university for blues music. There were great little pubs with an amazing little scene going on. After I’d been on the road for a while I moved to Tourquay and surfed bells every day, as much as I could, for five years. Now I live in Byron Bay, which is probably as close to paradise in Australia as I could find. As long as you’re close to an airport you can live anywhere as a muso. I spend most of my life on the road so, its great to come back to good waves and a good veggie garden with organic food a plenty!! You tour a lot! Who’s on the road with you, do you enjoy travelling and what’s a typical day for you like at the moment? Well its pretty fast paced on the road. I try to switch off and just pace myself and then give everything I can in the gig. I try to be able to sleep anywhere at any time and I try not to party too much on the road, but I cant say I’m always that successful because I’m a fun junkie at the end of the day. We’d describe you as a blues roots ‘n’ roller with a happy Aussie vibe. How would you describe your sound? Hah! I like it. Musically its very bluesy but its also usually pretty party style at the gig. Lyrically, I try to draw on stuff from my world so I guess its pretty Aussie. I just try to be genuine. We like that your sound is so eclectic – you must have some pretty interesting influences. Who did you listen to growing up and what music do you listen to now? I listened to a lot of blues from Robert Johnson to Hendrix but these days I’ll listen for the song and the production so it’s everything from Gillian Welch to Skrillex! Before you became a solo singer/songwriter you were formed few successful bands – what led to you going it alone? Back in the day I would do one gig solo and it would go really well and then I’d do the same room with the band and it just didn’t sound as special. The solo thing just took me in a different direction that spoke to people more effectively. I could leave more space for a vocal line when I wanted to and then go crazy and it just seemed to connect with the audience more intimately than band music would. These days in Australia I do all sorts of different lineups, but the solo thing will probably always be the nucleus of what I do. Your latest album, Troubles Door, has been so successful – over here and worldwide as well as just in Australia – how has that been for you? It’s been great! It’s an album that’s close to my heart because I built a studio in a new house and this was the

first album that I’ve done in it. It was a really fun time in my life. There’s a balance of party songs and more political stuff. Tell us about the electronic aspect of your album - will this be a big part of your work going forward? It’s been a big part of my music and my songwriting processes over the last couple of years. I was very influenced by the dubstep sound in England a couple of years ago when I was touring England, I love the grooves of hip hop and dance music when combined with riffy guitar as well. In general, I love learning new ways to make music. I use Ablteon Live for a lot of stuff and it is really a revolutionary bit of kit. Your song ‘Nervous’ has really interesting (and quite alarming) lyrics – who is it about? Well it was kind of about my neighbour who had a bad vibe back in the day and also hitting out a bit at Aussies who are silly enough to be racist whilst not seeing the irony of the fact that bar Aboriginal people, we’re all boat people. You lyrics are really personal, quite internal. Can you talk us through your song writing process please? Well despite myself (cause I don’t like opening up too much really) I do tend to put a lot of my own truths into my music. I’ve always been a questioning guy. I guess I write a lot of songs that have the covert question underlying ‘what are we supposed to with this life?’ I love to see people partying to songs that have a little more meaning layered in there. We can’t wait to see you at the Sea Level Tour on Newquay’s Fistral Beach this month – what can we expect from your set? I just think a couple of soulful chilled out ones and just go for the party thing the rest of the time!! We’ve seen some pretty rad photos of you surfing – are you intending to get some time in the water when you’re in Newquay? Hopefully, I’ve surfed a fair bit in England in the past. I’ve never found any heaving barrels or anything but I’ve always had fun. I used to stay with a mate in St Evil a fair bit and he knew what the story was. He is a boardaholic like me so it was great to ride some cool retro shapes. Lastly, can you leave us with your top ingredients for a perfect summers day? Waves, warmth, family, friends, beer and spliffs!

Heaven’s Basement:
Diving in at the Deep End
This month, homegrown rock quartet Heaven’s Basement will be kicking-off the second half of 2013 with a return to the South West as part of their latest UK tour. Drummer and co-founding member Chris Rivers tells 247’s Rob Sleigh why the band have got something to prove… “A lot of the shows were on the East Coast,” says Chris of the band’s recent tour of America. “You’d sit on the beach all day and then go on stage [laughs]. It was really cool.” Yes – life on the road can certainly be hellish at times for a hard-rocking four-piece like Heaven’s Basement. Fortunately, the band will be back on familiar territory this month as they embark on their first proper tour of the UK since the release of debut album ‘Filthy Empire’. While ’13 might be unlucky for some, it’s turning out to be a pretty good year for Heaven’s Basement, who recently added Duff McKagan and members of Korn to their rapidly growing fanbase. Following the February release of ‘Filthy Empire’, the band headed out on tour around Europe and the US with the likes of Black Veil Brides and Buckcherry, before returning home for this month’s headlining dates. Local fans will be pleased to hear that the band will be stopping off in Exeter for a welcome return to the South West. “Exeter’s always been really good to us. There’s always a great turn-out down there,” says Chris of their previous visits to the city. “The last time we played there, we broke down on the way and turned up about half an hour before the doors opened. It was all a bit chaotic, but sometimes those gigs turn out to be the best ones. The crowd was excellent. I remember Aaron going out crowd-surfing and that. We’ll be pleased to get back.” Heaven’s Basement’s most recent visit to the region was last year, when they popped into Plymouth for a support slot with Duff McKagan’s Loaded. “It was a big deal for us to be on a bill with someone that was in Guns N’ Roses,” Chris recalls fondly. “Duff was a childhood hero for everyone in the band and he was a really nice, friendly guy. He’s actually become a fan of some of our songs since then, so to have that kind of
endorsement from someone that we grew up listening to is really cool.” It was while listening to bands like Guns N’ Roses as a child that Chris first started to take an interest in becoming a musician. “My dad was a drummer so I was always surrounded by drums and music. It became the clichéd thing of being the only thing I was interested in doing. As I grew up, I started looking for other people to be in a band with and started trying to suss out who was up for doing it long-term. That eventually led me to Sid [Glover, guitarist], who I met in 2006.” Within a couple of years, Heaven’s Basement was born. “We felt that we had something to prove,” says Chris. “We wanted to start a band to do what we wanted and just do our own thing. There’s no point trying to bend to people’s wants or styles because they’ll see through that in the long term.” A few years and several line-up changes later, Heaven’s Basement found themselves in Los Angeles, working on their first album with producer John Feldmann. Chris reveals that recording the album wasn’t the long, drawn-out process they had come to expect. In fact, the whole thing was finished in less than two weeks. “We took three years to get there and then – bang – 12 days later, we got the green light to do the album and it was recorded. That’s a reflection of the band’s attitude, really. Not afraid to take a risk and dive in at the deep end at times.” As the band prepare for their first headlining tour of 2013, we ask Chris what their hopes are for the foreseeable future. “We’ll just go along regardless, writing our music and playing the music that we like. If people like it, then that’s a good thing. If not, then we can’t really do much about that [laughs].”

You’ll be pushed to your limits and you’ll need to work as a team with your mates before an evening of bands, beer and good grub. “People want to get out of their comfort zone – often they’ve done a 5k or 10k race before and want to take the next step. The music and entertainment side of it all is popular too,” says Ashley Jardine from RockSolid. Simon Groves, from Monster Race agrees: “Running a road race doesn’t compare to running an obstacle course race over the same distance. On an obstacle course you are challenged in so many different ways. The course will offer so much variety that won’t get a chance to be bored like you can if you are simply running.” One of the great things about obstacle races is that they’re suitable for anyone who wants to get outside and have some fun - it’s important to point out that you don’t need to be a great runner. “As you are stopping and starting due to obstacles your body gets a break from the running and a chance to recharge. That said the better you are at running the easier you will find it,” explains Simon. All races attract a complete mix bag of fitness levels – you’re likely to find a nice eclectic mix that ranges from the super fit elite who want to get a fast time through to gangs in fancy dress who are just aiming to make it to the finish line with their mates. “There’s always lots of students, businesses on team building days, charities and sports people,” says Ashley. The atmosphere at these races is brilliant and there’s so much going on, which is why they make great spectator sports too. “Ninety percent of people do the race in teams, but some do compete as individuals. With some obstacles you need people to help you otherwise it’s impossible to get through, you find lots of strangers helping each other out and great camaraderie,” says Ashley. Simon agrees that tackling

the course with friends and family adds a whole new level of fun to obstacle races, but tells us that he himself has entered solo at obstacle events around the country. “You will still have lots of fun. These types of events have great atmospheres. You will see complete strangers helping each other get across obstacles.“ “The 2 November 2013 Monster Race at Charlton Park, Swindon, will be our first major event. The event is proving to be very popular. We are anticipating around 1,000 Monsters taking part on the day. Looking forward, we are planning three or four events in 2014. We will be offering the 5k and 10k courses again but are also looking at a longer distances at one of the events for folks that are after that,” says Simon, who also tells us that Monster Race are really pleased with the male to female ratio they have - at the moment the ladies are way ahead in the sign up stakes…. Ashley put on his first race in March this year in Ottery St Mary, Devon, using the same site as Beautiful Days festival and it attracted a whopping 2,500 people. The same number is expected for the next RockSolid race, which is being held in Plymouth’s Newnham Park. “Newnham Park jumped out at us as the terrain is extremely hilly. There are water features, swamps, forest and field – the World Mountain Bike Championship was held there – it’s perfect for us, “ says Ashley enthusiastically. Cancer Research UK are the official charity of RockSolid – Ashley and his team are dedicated to helping them continue to make a world of difference to so many people’s lives – the races are a great way to fundraise, by getting people to sponsor you for completing the race – although of course that is optional. Kamikaze Ink Truro tattoo artist, Karl Bowker, of Kamikaze Ink is causing quite a stir in the ink scene, winning an award at the last Plymouth Tattoo Convention and attracting rock ‘n’ roll royalty clients to boot. 247’s Rachael D'Cruze headed to the shop to find out more…
Although I’m no stranger to the odd tattoo shop or two, I admit I do find they can be slightly intimidating places, but I immediately felt at home in Kamikaze Ink. The shop challenges any notions of tattoo shops being dark and dingy, male dominated or intimidating. Martha-Mary who is the shop manager and has just married Karl welcomes me: Kamikaze’s main tattoo artist and owner. The whole place is flooded with natural light, there’s lots of comfy seating and awesome photos of Karl’s work adorn the walls. Karl, who started out working as an operating department practitioner in the NHS (no wonder the studio is so sparkly clean) specialises in black and grey realism. He’s owned Kamikaze Ink for five years and is known best for his portraiture work – he won ‘Best Small Black & Grey Tattoo’ at last year’s Plymouth Tattoo Convention, which attracts a plethora of talented artists and is a great accolade. Welsh post-hardcore rockers, Funeral For A Friend, are known for being heavily tattooed, as well as for being insanely good musicians, having even graced the pages of monthly ink bible, Skin Deep Magazine. Karl first tattooed the band’s bassist, Richard Boucher, at Cardiff Tattoo Convention – a ship and anchor on his leg and his been doing his work since, the latest piece being cameos for his and his fiancé, Rebekah, featuring silhouettes of each other’s faces. It’s not all rock ‘n’ royalty and awards at Kamikaze though – although I was privy to a conversation involving Karl tattooing a rapper at Chris Brown’s house in America… One of the nicest things about the guys at Kamikaze: Martha, Karl, Cess who is doing an apprenticeship there and JayCherry the other resident tattoo artist who specialises in graphic novel type work, script and Polynesian work, is that they are totally down to earth. The shop regularly runs themed tattoo days, where they donate all of the cash raised to charity – last Movember saw a staggering array of tash tatts hit the streets of Truro and Friday 13th saw some kick-ass flash on offer. The next planned charity day will be to raise money for a close friend from Texas who also owns a tattoo shop, who’s been involved with a serious motorbike accident. Like I said, they are good people. Karl offers cosmetic tattooing at Kamikaze too. cancer support charity that helps women manage the visible side effects of cancer treatment, helping out at makeover days as she’s also a trained makeup artist. “A woman said to me she’d love to have her eyebrows tattooed, as the hair in this area sadly often doesn’t grow back, but at between £400 - £500 it was too expensive. From a tattooing point of view there’s no need for it to be so costly, so it’s a service we decided to start offering.” Piercing is also on the menu at Kamikaze Ink, with Karl offering full body piercing and microdermal implants and JayCherry specialising in facial piercings. In fact, as this goes to press Karl and Martha are off to Africa, to help a two guys from Plymouth set up the first ever legal tattoo studio in Mozambique and Karl is going to teach them how to pierce. “They are amazing tattoo artists but have never run their own shop before, so we’ve just over to lend a hand,” says Martha modestly. The shop has been a hive of activity today and thoroughly enjoyable place to hang out. There have been back-to-back tattoo appointments for both Karl and JayCherry, a plethora of enquiries in person and by phone, lots of friends just popping in to say hi and chill out for a while and the whirlwind of activity that goes hand in hand with Thursdays as this is when Mathew from Cornwall Tattoo Removal (www.cornwalltattooremoval.co.uk) works from the studio. Although Karl specalises in portraits and black and grey work, we asked him to do a colour cover up of an existing slightly shoddy and faded tattoo (awkward, us? Never…) Karl listened to exactly what we wanted and drew up a beautiful piece that not only covered the old tattoo but brought the piece into the position I wanted it and gave scope for extending it in the future. The Shed is best known for its colourful candy accompanied cocktails but this is not all they have to offer; with a strong, varied menu and a very well stocked bar. The décor and lay out is interesting and unusual with a fusion of Hollywood glamour and French shabby chic with inspiration taken from several eras. Staff were friendly and helpful, and the service was quick, there’s also an open kitchen which I always like to see! My friend and I ordered the Greek salad and Caesar salads priced at £9.95 each (+£2 for added bacon). Having never ordered salad before in my life, I wasn’t really sure what to expect but I was pleasantly surprised by the taste sensation that was the combination of fish, chicken and pig. Something I would not have thought could work, but the creaminess of the Caesar dressing and the crisp refreshing taste of the little gem lettuce balanced out the saltiness of the bacon and anchovies perfectly. The parmesan and croutons made it more filling than I’d have expected too. The Greek salad also did not disappoint, with mixed leaves, cherry tomatoes, red onion, incredibly generous helpings of olives, and feta cheese and an accompaniment of delicious herby garlic ciabatta. Well worth trying out if you want a really filling salad. For desert, we had the banoffee pie and Belgium waffles with ice cream- they were sensational and portion sizes were just right. I would highly recommend both!
This superb and brand new vegetarian restaurant, offers meat substitute dishes, burgers, full English fry-ups, mock fish & chips etc., as well as salads - just to dispel age-old clichés about vegetarian food…For my starter I ordered a delicious aubergine & quinoa caviar salad. Obviously it’s not actual caviar: quinoa (pronounced “kinwa“) is similar to couscous and whatever flavouring they used on it is out of this world, trust me! Devine. To continue the salad theme, I went with our dear old friend the halloumi salad. For those not into cheese, halloumi is a Cypriot semi-hard, unripened brined cheese made from a mixture of goat and sheep milk. I’ve had this dish at many eateries in Plymouth, but at Samphire it was the best. Again, the flavouring and the salad dressing take it to another dimension tasty chilli and lemon dressing: that’s the ticket. The sundried tomatoes really soak it up, and the salad leaves are so fresh and crispy, it‘s as if they‘ve just been picked. It came with boiled potatoes, which made a nice change from the usual bread. Samphire is a lovely place to eat, even if you’re not vegetarian. Affordable and tasty food, friendly service and a cheerful, welllit and spacious interior.
I am no stranger to Taunton’s The Olive Tree – their three cheese platter is simply amazing, as is the smoked duck breast platter and pate platter… However, it’s for this very reason that I’ve never sampled a salad there, so I keen to see what was on offer. On the menu, to choose from in terms of salad was seafood, feta and mozzarella. After a little deliberation I decided to go for the Mozzarella and tomato salad. All the food at The Olive Tree is made freshly to order but it was on the table within ten minutes. I got a large plate with a beautifully presented salad of sliced juicy mozzarella, layered with tasty beef tomatoes, spotted with blobs of delicious pesto, olives and divine sun dried tomatoes. I was impressed it hadn’t been bulked out with lettuce and bread, as is often the case when you order a salad. The meal itself was filling and satisfying – it felt like a treat, not a dieter’s option. They key, as I’ve found when I’ve previously eaten at The Olive Tree, is the perfect combination of fresh, top quality ingredients. What more could you want really? The table service was good and my waiter was very friendly. The coffee shop is situated on the first floor, with their well stocked Delicatessen on the ground floor – their homemade bread is delicious, I could resist buying a loaf to take home.

Scared To Get Happy (Cherry Red) Also called Story of Indie-Pop 1980-89, this 5-disc box-set is a must-have for those wanting to know how it all started. It also hammers home the true meaning of "Indie", which is independent label/ non-mainstream music, as opposed to its wrongful use by lazy journalists who use it to describe any old band that plays guitars! Some bands (Primal Scream, Stone Roses, Jesus and Mary Chain) found commercial success afterwards, but the selections here are from the time they were still underground. Some never found their way to the over ground (Wild Swans, Sea Urchins, Blue Orchids), but still enjoy a cult following. And it comes with a brilliantly written book. Not just a history lesson: this is hours of essential listening.
White Sails White Sails (Ruska Records)
Gentle psych folk with a slight alt-country tinge, from ex members of Mellow Drunk, Dora Flood and The Bias. The guys have been part of the San Francisco Bay's music scene for quite a while, and they show more than just a casual nod to The Clientele: both in the voice and the musical style, particularly in the gentle washes of sound, decorated with mellow slide guitars. Every song on the album is strong, but the lyrics occasionally fall short when they settle for lazy or obvious rhyming. Apart from that, it's just a great hazy, lazy summery record. Sod the weather: whatever happens, however it turns out this year, this will make you feel cosy inside.
Public Service Broadcasting
Inform-Educate-Entertain (Test Card Recordings) Sticking film and TV dialogue over music is an age old idea. Big Audio Dynamite arguably pioneered it, and in the trip-hop boom of the '90s, Depth Charge pretty much perfected it. What Public Service Broadcasting have is a series of thoughtful instrumentals using electronica and live drumming, that "take you on a journey", if you'll pardon the cliché. The highlight is the electro space rock of Spitfire. The album serves its purpose in providing decent instrumental music, and they're obviously good musicians with plenty going on in the creative tank. But if you want to be blown away, you're better off checking out Depth Charge's brilliant 9 Deadly Venoms album.
The Title Sequence Stills (Self-release)
This nostalgic and clever retro-pop album comes from a North London duo who formed when songwriter David Bailey originally intended to record a second solo album, for alternative folk label, Folkwit. Instead he turned to his old friend and producer, Nick Croft and so Stills was created. From the charming psych pop of the opener, Sound, with its majestic strings, to the second song Ashamed, with its jerky rhythm and plodding bass, it's obvious that writing, melody and arrangements are all given high priority. These qualities are abundantly clear in the beautifully orchestrated Etienne. Gentle, thoughtful and imaginative all the way. A winner. The album is available digitally with a limited vinyl run.

Mr Benn Shake a Leg Nice Up records
As always I strive for transparency so from the off you need to know I've long been a fan of Mr Benn, especially his cheeky releases. This Bristol legend has delivered one of the best albums in ages and just in time for the British summer and festival season. For those new to him, think reggae and hip hop influences, a keen ear for a hook and production that's hits the spot like an espresso first thing in the morning. Collaborations come from a veritable who's who of MCs Top Cat, Tenor Fly, Emskee, Serocee – the list goes on. Whether you find yourself in a dingy club with a banging sound system or front row at a festival you can be sure this will brighten the place up, if I was Mr Benn I'd be super pleased with myself right now. This is about to become a British classic album, buy it, then buy one for a friend too.

There was a time when Baile Funk was everywhere, the posh newspapers were doing big articles on it, everyone, his nan and diplo were playing it, every music site was name checking it, now though it's almost like everyone has had their fill and moved on. This album aims to redress the balance. For those that don't know it's basically Brazilian club music originating in the ghetto, so any copyright was up for grabs and lots of the lyrics (if you can understand them) are a little saucy to say the least. While this albums has some great tracks and lots of modern productions (baile trap anyone?), it does seem to lack a little punch. There are at least four or five tracks that I'd play out so if you want some new baile in your life it's definitely worth a look but if you are new to the genre there are better albums to dip your toes into.
Ghostface Killah The Brown Tape Soul Temple
Surely no one can ever have enough of Ghostface, this album came out as a limited edition cassette tape on record store day (who on earth still has a tape deck?!?), so now it gets a proper release on CD and download. It's pretty much what you'd expect, Tony Stark's half rapped half cry'd verses over some killer loops, with that good old soul feel that Rza's would approve of, lot's of crackle for authenticity. For most artists that last description would be a slight on how they haven't moved on or progressed as an artist but with Ghost it's almost like we don't want him to change. So if you like Ghostface, you'll like this and if you never did this probably won't change anything.
Joe Mckee Burning Boy Big Ship records
Never heard of this guy so no preconceptions as to what he should do, first listen was dismissed as a bad mix of Leonard Cohn and Jeff Buckley, without Jeff's range or ability to mesmerise you. After a few more listens though I would still name check the two artists but say that this guy has a real knack for space and feeling amongst all this. The tracks are downbeat with a slight spacey feel and though he's Australian I would say that this would be more at home on a grey day up north than on a sunny beach in Oz. An ex girlfriend of mine once said that British people make better music than Australians because we have such rubbish weather and we stay inside more, if that is true, this guy must be an agoraphobic.

DC Breaks Swag Ram Records
Ultimate DJ tool and dance floor destroyer, the delivery and movement on this bassline is off the hook! DC Breaks making their entry onto the summer of 2013 this release is to be one of their strongest to date. To be honest the intro is pretty basic but once it drops the basic quality is forgotten and you get wrapped up in the aggressive bass hook.
Loadstar ft Jakes Warrior Ram Records
I know it’s a bit late to review this track, and even though it’s been out for the last month by the time you read this… the amount of times I’ve heard this being smashed by every DJ it defiantly deserves a review. The DJ play is ridiculous and the impact on the dance floor is straight up carnage. Jakes delivers some vocal hooks that bring the build up into one epic journey, one thing I remember when I first heard it was I did not expect that on the drop!! Make sure you hearing it if you haven’t already.
Rockwell Detroit Shogun Audio
When MistaJam first played this on 1Xtra it blew up the speakers…The vibe and production, the way the beats bounce of the bassline – everything about this track had been done well. You simply cannot play this at a low level. The structure of this track is different from the rest as well as the vibe, reminds me of 80’s disco then mashed onto a fast past energetic piece of music. Rockwell you smashed it on this one. Sure we won’t hear him make something like this for time.
DJ Hazard Time Tripping Playaz
First heard this tune at Rinseout’s new dawn event in Feb this year, with DJ Marky scratching over the top! Didn’t think much of it at first, but it is certainly a grower. Hazard’s minimal jump up style really does excel on this track and his use of movie sample really sets you up for the rolling drop. Also when you hear this track out it will get reloaded pretty much straight away as the bass tone is always too much. If anything this track is going to set up Hazard to hopefully announce when he is going to drop a release date for his album.

ANNA VON HAUSSWOLFF Ceremony (City Slang)
If you've had enough of the vacuous antics of Bieber or the emotional void that is reality TV then dip a toe into the none-more-solemn world of Swedish songstress, Anna Von Hausswolff. Hers is a world of funereal gravitas, where church organs, minimal percussion, elongated passages and ghostly vocal emissions weave themselves around the darkest recesses of your soul. Like Kate Bush singles played at 33rpm, the likes of 'Deathbed' still work emotional wonders, it just takes some time for them to get there. Thankfully, the lovely 'Mountains Crave' and 'Sova' afford a splash of contrast. Footnote: Hausswolff recently posed in a Burzum t-shirt. Burzum is neo-Nazi and convicted murderer, Varg Vikernes, black metal project. No-one said she was perfect.
LEMURIA
The Distance Is So Big (Bridge Nine) Steadily forging their unique take on indie-pop for the best part of a decade, New York trio, Lemuria, have warbled their honest wiles into the hearts of all but the criminally callous. Their third platter finds them dialling in extra portions of light and shade, with Sheena Ozzella's pleasing vocal cadences in fine fettle, resulting in clever vignettes like 'Brilliant Dancer', 'Chihuly' and the brilliantly titled 'Congratulations Sex' – songs that straddle the line between twee and tangential yet never fall from grace. If Edie Brickell had cut her teeth on the punk rock underground this might be the result: a sunny yet reflective disposition undercut by an unforced rock'n'roll psyche. Summer's here, then.
GRANT HART The Argument (Domino)
If you don't know who Hüsker Dü are you deserve to be pistol-whipped. Along with The Descendents they were melodic punk rock trailblazers, long before your Green Days and Nirvanas loomed into view. Grant Hart was the band's drummer and co-songwriter. This, his fourth solo effort, is a winner on so many levels. A concept album based on John Milton's Paradise Lost and inspired by his buddy, William Burroughs, 'The Argument' covers more sonic and sociological ground than most bands manage in their whole career. From Bowie-esque psychodrama (‘Awake, Arise!’) to scrambled anti-folk (‘If We Have The Will’) and post-Velvet Underground genius (‘Is The Sky The Limit?’), the only thing Hart doesn't do is milk his former glories.
FIST CITY
It's 1983, Grow Up (Black Tent Press) Canada is serving up some tasty treats once again. This time we have gender-bending anarchonihilist quartet, Fist City, who manage to sound Vice-friendly, grimy, poptastic and melancholic all at once; like Black Lips sharing a beach-front margarita with Sonic Youth. When you figure in that vocalist Kier Griffiths is on her way to becoming a him, and that the band are Christian-baiting adventurists with a keen sense of neurosis, it all becomes very alluring indeed. Furthermore, 'Endless Bummer' and 'Spit' are where Dick Dale surf meets Fugazi furrowed brow – a quite logical meeting of disparate styles with added substance. Therein lies Fist City's strength, to condense the subcultural sounds of the city into a forwardthinking, positive whole. www.247magazine.co.uk

Summon The Faithless (Relapse) I don't know about you but it's not often I find any creature (or myself) 'In A Frightful State Of Gnawed Dismemberment' but there's a first for everything I guess. With a title like that you might, therefore, be forgiven for thinking that this band dabble in Cannibal Corpse style ultra-noise, but thankfully the Portland quartet are more attracted to the roomy, B-downtuned growl of Black Tusk, Kylesa et al. 'Greed Is Your Horse' relies on nothing more cerebral than the earthy tug of throbbing guitars and old familiar metal tropes that revolve around scattershot drumming and duelling guitars. While vocalist, E Olson's dynamic and invasive growl prevents the sludgy 'Water Under A Burning Bridge' from devouring itself completely.

In 1963, Lee Hazlewood released a concept album ‘Trouble Is A Lonesome Town’ – solo prairie strumalongs peppered with a narrative concerning the antics of the residents of Trouble (like a musical version of Dukes Of Hazard but not for kids). 50 years later, a motley crew of country-philes dedicated to unearthing forgotten classics, henceforth known as Thriftstore Masterpiece, have resurrected it, splashing the original's tweeness with a little irony while remaining faithful to the concept. The brainchild of Charles Normal, this is the first of many intended resurrections, and features the voices of Pete Yorn, Frank Black (and his eight-year old son), Isaac Brock from Modest Mouse, Courtney Taylor and Eddie Argos among others. What's not to like?

Kraemer + Niereich Feat. Marc Acardipane We Have Arrived 2013 [Construct Rhythm]
This was always going to win favour with me to be honest. I have played the Miro mix of this track more times than I have actually had hot dinners. Rightly so as well, it is a fierce monster of a track that has this noise that sounds like a decapitated windscreen wiper as the pinnacle of the tune. The original mix that came out in 1992 and launched the well reknowned Industrial Strength also is equally sublime. However, giving the track a long overdue and very complimentary twist are Kraemer + Niereich, and they offer two interpretations that are meticulously deep and clanking, but stay true to the original. This one will stay in my record box all summer.
Rydel + Bloody J Instant Classic [Yin Yang]
There appears to be quite an influx of old skool rave sounds and synths in techno of late, which when combined with pristine kick drums and deep subby basslines work well, and the latest monster on Pedro Delgardo's Yin Yang imprint mixes the old and new influences perfectly. It's specifically the Mika mix that does it for me, and as I write, Mika's version of 'Instant Classic' was one of the most in demand tracks at recent gigs both in Manchester and techno haven Glasgow. The sheer funky hypnotic vibes drive this one along, and when a chord stab sounding like it could be from a Dave Angel or a Re-Load record comes into the mix this is really effective record.
A. Paul - Meltdown (AnGy KoRe Mix) [Onh-cet]
D-beat hardcore nastiness abounds on Finnish The label name here sparked a bit of a discussion loose cannons, Unkind's sixth long player. But it's when hosting the Liquid Pulse Techno Sessions not all vein-bursting angst here. Like kindred spirits, radio show on Eat Music, but the results were quite Envy, the band's fondness for abyss-teetering hilarious, it took us a good half an hour to realise post-rock means that they indulge in periods of that this Portugese imprint (ran by Naked Lunch's elongated introspective moodscapery like 'Viallinen' legendary A. Paul) was simply 'Techno' backwards from time to time. But it's not long before they're and not the 'On Ket' we initially took it to mean. rapidly shifting through the gears and giving the likes Stupidity aside, Italy's AnGy KoRe's mix is fiercely of Tragedy and Disfear a good run for their money brutal, and despite not being too pacey, has pride on the terrifyingly beautiful 'Laki'. Things close of place both in techno and hard trance sets and is unexpectedly with 'Saattokoti' – an alluring paean very effective when pitched up. The twisted siren riff that takes Woven Hand's gothic Americana, replete and intricate percussion work wonders here and this with ghostly banjo, and drags it through black mud has received a fair few plays when building sets. for five minutes. Hopefully this tangential exploration is a sign of things to come.
BLACK TUSK Tend No Wounds (Relapse)
These Southern redneck fucks are the kind of guys who would probably firebomb a vegan convention in their lunch-break but their brand of punk-metal swamp-rock is mighty, magnificent and worth the carnage. These six songs, designed to keep you satiated 'til the next long player drops, feature the likes of 'The Weak And The Wise' – a welcome deviation from the band's usual dumb-and-dumber approach to rock'n'roll. It appears that labelmates, Baroness, and their mindful innovations have rubbed off on them. Admittedly, if Black Tusk had an IQ, it probably wouldn't be much larger than their cowboy boot size. But their common-sense hard rock groove doesn't want to be judged, it wants to be devoured. Tuck in.

Remix Ep 01 [Filth Infatuated Digital] Regular readers to this page should be aware of these guys. They hail from Bridgwater and I have been actively supporting their material since the label began, but this one is something special indeed. Deciding to get four spiffing remixes of past releases, all four were burnt onto CD and immediately played. Kicking things off are the ever wicked 'The Anxious' (Mark EG + Chrissi) who deliver a rip roaring version of 'Yellow Lines' that takes no prisoners. Marcello Perri's take on 'Memoria' is also another dark destroyer. Slovenia's Veztax funks things up with his mix of 'Discojack' but the one that steals the show is Wakefield's Jon Nuccle who turns Kev D's 'Tortured' into a pure aggressive funktastic monster.

Tweed works largely with appropriated material which is re-filmed and re-contextualised, adding narratives that obscure the film’s original source, location and authorship. It is uncertain whether the places or events depicted occur in the past, present or future, or in some kind of parallel existence. He exposes the physicality and materiality of the virtual by undermining its invisibility and focusing on the data centres, cabling, codecs and base materials through which it exists.

On certain days you’ll be able to see the curators and conservators at work in the exhibition space and there will also be a number of opportunities for visitors to get involved. Come in and look at the objects the museum care for, write your own labels for them and give them your opinions on what you think they should be collecting.

This prequel to the Pixar animated hit sees Mike Wazowski and James P. Sullivan during their frat days at Monsters University. Back in the day these two wisecracking monsters couldn't stand each other. The film tells the story of to how Mike and Sulley overcame their differences and became the best of friends. Expect to see eye-popping 3D visuals, smart references to Pixar’s back catalogue, and the comedic pairing of Crystal and Goodman adding that all important appeal to the older members of the audience.

Dir: Guillermo Del Toro, Starring: Idris Elba, Charlie Day, Charlie Humman, Ron Perlman In this clever twist on the invasion movie, horrible beasties are awakened from the earth’s core and start off small by destroying the odd aircraft carrier before moving onto the densely populated cities. The human race formulates its own plan to take on these mega-monsters using giant robots piloted by humans. This should be a fantastic fun and although it looks a little bit like a videogame Del Toro’s talents should ensure a great experience.
THE WORLD'S END (TBC) Released: 19 July, Dir: Edgar Wright Starring: Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Paddy Considine and Martin Freeman, 2012/UK/TBC 20 years after attempting an epic pub crawl, five childhood friends reunite when one of them becomes hell bent on trying the drinking marathon again. They are dragged around a seemingly endless number of their home town pubs with the climax being the fabled pub, The World's End. But in a weird twist of fate Armageddon approaches and the five friends literally find themselves at the end of the world.

Their video for Capsized gained a lot of airplay on MTV, they performed on the Jon Stewart Show in 1994 and the single, “She Found You” garnered considerable radio play in 1998. Volksfest 2013 was blessed with three days of good weather marred only by one alleged accidental broken neck (Plymouth, 24-26th May). Friday eve, main stage, things were not hotting up (notting up?) with THESE REIGNING DAYS who were seemingly content to push out pedestrian indie-rock to a smattering of early birds. Soon after, Bristol's MAGNUS PUTO turned indie-hop into a celebrational punt with a self-congratulatory after-taste. Over in the Live & Local tent, AYRE POINT took inoffensive indie to nowhere particularly riveting, allowing for SHOOT THE MAN's old-fashioned ska-punk to raise the mercury levels in that delightfully corny way of all post-Sublime ensembles. Back on the main stage, COSMO JARVIS was undergoing a rock transformation but the whimsical likes of 'Gay Pirates' made for a more festive frolic. No such unpredictability on the Open Mic stage with BECKA LANGSFORD cranking out the soul-blues while Vince Lee worked wonders on his uber-vintage Stratotone. After enduring JAMES ROBINSON's acoustic pop-slops, headliners ALABAMA 3 were received with modest gusto, their techno-country groove walking the perfect line between Shameless (the TV show) and Lawless (the movie). Saturday afternoon, and HAZEL O'CONNOR couldn't stop talking about death and dying. Bless her miserablist heart. The band's smoochy sax-saturated new wave made a few old timers reminisce but the frisky youth were immune to O'Connor's dotty aunt charms. Local fest favourites, MAD DOG MCREA, pulled an as-expected large throng for their comfortable Irish folk rock strumalongs. Likewise THE LEVELLERS, although their midtempo electro-folk appeared tired and desultory, while the hits of old sounded quintessentially dated. Elsewhere, ROADSIDE were holding onto old school Britpop for dear life, while THE INFINITE COLLECTIVE opted for an upbeat ska'n'bass jazzamboree. Sunday, hangovers aplenty as THE WATERBOARDERS were laying on thick Fender reverb and surf-rocking to Dick Dale's heart's content. THE PJP BAND's inspirational keyboard alt-rock didn't have the usual clout here: the curse of the early evening main stage slot. There's no denying, however, that the trio's songs are of a quality that you wouldn't find anywhere else at the festival all weekend. Like Andy Warhol, perhaps, homegrown English folk hero, SETH LAKEMAN, has turned repetition into an art-form. But when his fiddlesome resolve and the band's sinuous, percussive thrust was in full swing, there was no escaping the emotional whirlwind. Thumbs up for the Volks folks but a couple contemporary headliners next year perhaps? Road trip! On tour for four days with the delightfully deafening DAMERELS. First stop, Canterbury (Lady Luck, 4th June). It was great to witness the band in new environs, especially as this was quite possibly the best that their raw garage maelstrom has sounded, with the crowd barely able to contain their primal instincts. Openers, Brighton's BACKDOWN, proffered relentless shouty hardcore with a strong if one-dimensional voice. Footnote: someone at the show was wearing a Hard Skin tote bag with the slogan: Shopping is for cunts. I like this a lot. The next three Damerels shows were in Belgium (Opwijk, Kortrijk, La Louviere, 5-7th June). Generally speaking, the Belgians took to them warmly but, apart from a few borderline crazies, they didn't quite comprehend how good this band truly are. Kortrijk was an industry schmooze-fest with most bands playing on the roof of the venue. Neat. Belgian duo, SCRAPPY TAPES, gave good blues-rock despite a drummer who seemed afraid that his kit would hit him back; singer violinist, LIESA VAN DER AA, worked brooding wonders with her experimental loop-pop; while French live-dance duo, THE NAME, made like a more trance LCD Soundsystem with a drummer who bedazzled with metronomic flare. News Feed Competitions FOODIES FESTIVAL Returning to Bristol Harbourside on 12-14 July, the UK’s largest celebration of food and drink offers visitors a vast array of culinary activities including top chefs such as Michelin-starred Martin Blunos, Rachel Demuth, Ronnie Faulkner and Romy Gill amongst others cooking their signature dishes live in the Chefs’ Theatre. BOARDMASTERS TICKETS Boardmasters, the mighty music and action sports festival returns to Newquay’s Fistral Beach and Watergate Bay on 7 – 11 August. Since 1981 Boardmasters has been an integral part of the British surf scene.
