utive semesters on campus the entire time I attended LBSU. I know others spent even less time here.

For those who are graduating this year, we’ll be spending our last moments with LBSU at Angel Stadium. Personally, I don’t mind the shortened ceremony or the venue, but it’s a little odd that when we leave, we won’t even be on campus.

Even as we all have mixed emotions regarding this anticlimactic ending, we can now turn a new page and start writing the next chapter.

But before we do that, we’re going to flip back a few pages and reflect on the year we’ve had. In this issue of 22 West Magazine, we’ll be highlighting some of our favorite pieces from the year, featuring our amazing and dedicated team of volunteers and interns. I’m so proud of all the work we’ve done, and the truly moving pieces our team has produced.

QUEER BAITING 101 WHY QUEER BAITING IS WRONG

G

ay men are continuously being mocked throughout multiple media platforms. We are drawn to be over feminized and dramatized for the amusement of viewers. However, in the real world, little boys are being bullied in schools for ‘acting’ gay. And in an ironic turn of events, those same bullies are going online and queer baiting on platforms like Tik Tok to gain attraction.

Queer baiting is the practice of implying queer attraction or relationships to engage with the LGBTQ community. A lot of influencers and celebrities are guilty of this practice, which has made queer baiting a trend throughout many social media platforms. Tik Tok is a major platform where queer baiting is performed on a daily basis. Those on the front lines of queer baiting are straight cis-gendered men who have a history of using homophobic slurs.

The performance of queerbaiting capitalizes and profits from the lives of queer people.

Tiktokers fail to comprehend the harmful effects of queerbaiting online. One of the consequences being the reinforcement of negative stereotypes of gay men; it starts a chain reaction of homophobic slurs that are harmful to the queer community.

A common reaction on Tiktok is people attacking

the queer community while giving heterosexuals a pass from being ridiculed and celebrating them as comedians. A person pretending to be a queer for views should not be mistaken as an ally to the LBGTQ community. They are only enforcing harmful and false stereotypes that belittle queer people.

Capitalizing on a marginalized group only further disconnects them from society. Queer baiting does not make queer behavior socially acceptable because of the internalized homophobia within queer baiting. There are places where being gay is illegal, yet ironically heterosexuals are given a pass to perform and present as queer for entertainment. Thus, queer people become skits for straight people to mock and gain attraction from larger audiences. In other words, exhibiting queer behavior is meant to be funny and attractive. The reality for a lot of queer individuals is the opposite; they are victims of hate crimes endorsed by stereotypes that showcase them as a joke. They are attacked and judged for the same behavior straight people are idolized for in the media.

When straight people start queer baiting, they start to invalidate LGBTQ stories. Fake comingout videos are produced by people who later confess they’re straight. Videos like these invali-

date queer people because it labels coming out as a joke. There is nothing funny about coming out; it can be traumatizing and anxiety-driven due to fear of rejection. Straight people fail to realize they are enacting and pushing homophobic ideals by mocking queer people in their videos.

Allowing queer baiting to continue is encouraging toxic behavior to fly under the radar without repercussion. LGBTQ stories are not something to stigmatize and make fun of. Queer baiting performed by straight people has created this double standard that erases the hardships of queer people and turns it into a joke. As a queer person, it hurts to see my community continuously harassed for simply being ourselves. The mockery of queer people coming out and the false stereotypes given by the media has left the LGBTQ community vulnerable to an alarming number of homophobic attacks online.

Queer baiting silences queer voices and it’s unacceptable. LGBTQ stories aren’t meant for jokes nor to be capitalized for profit. There is no room left for ignorance to prevail in the media. Let us celebrate and learn about queer culture, instead of enabling homophobia by making harmful stigmatizing videos that disparage queer people and their unique stories.

WHERE TO DRIVE WHEN YOU’VE GOT THE TIME

T

o drive is to live—or such goes some notion emulating Kerouac, but now he’s dead and the romance of the road ceases to the realities of commuting. Yet sometimes, you need to head out onto the open road with the speed limit wind streaming through your hair.

Anybody taking Interstate 405 to Long Beach knows it’s not quite a scenic journey, with stopand-go traffic drawling on. For those who prefer staying up, out, and looking to while the time away, here are four routes for rolling out with blacktop under wheel—though, technically, some recommendations might be asphalt.

Whether you’re new to southern California or a true Angelino, cruising down these streets resonates differently at night compared to daytime traffic congestions.

One tip for driving late at night is to pull aside, when able, if somebody is riding close behind you.

There is an inherent risk to driving, but don’t be fast nor be furious. It’s typically better to know there’s a car ahead so you don’t find yourself entranced by the empty road.

Mulholland Drive

Across Terminal Island to San Pedro

Driving down Mulholland is a staple in Los Angeles road vernacular for a reason. Go westward, go eastward, go until the luster grows weary. Don’t get dazzled by the city lights as you wind higher up the hills. Loop to the north or south by way of Coldwater Canyon, or the famous Laurel Canyon—a basic rule to follow is that streets with ‘canyon’ in the name can’t steer you wrong.

After a late night on campus, come cross some iconic bridges before breaking off down into lower San Pedro. Interstate 710 will take you over the newly-constructed Long Beach International Gateway and the Vincent Thomas Bridge, the only suspension bridge in the area. Continue to the recommendation below or loop around and drive over some more bridges, because few things are better than bounding a nice, solid bridge.

Pacific Coast Highway Sunset Boulevard It would be remiss to not mention one of the most iconic strips of pavement to have ever fringed the coastline. When the streets are quiet, when the stench of gasoline isn’t present, the ocean scent takes hold across the land.

The worst aspect of Route 1, save for speed racers scrambling down the road, is the thought in the back of the mind urging you to keep going and not look back, but that might just be this writer.

It’s easy to turn back around but those looking to steal a longer drive should fare either the canyons Topanga or Malibu. They’ll carry you to Route 101, wherein you can head wherever you choose.

These roads careen through the mountains where it seems no souls reside. Pleasant curves are abundant; pleasant so long as you don’t speed—not that anybody would dare do so.

For fans of the musical group Jan and Dean—as I’m sure all college students are—this is where their famous “Dead Man’s Curve” stems from. Just don’t go racing anybody and that nickname shouldn’t be a deterrent to you. Driving the continuity of Sunset showcases bustling intersections to dark patches to William Holden, face down in a pool.

Many streets such as Sepulveda, Santa Monica, Victory, and anything else that Randy Newman might have sung about, are strong contenders, but Sunset triumphs above them with its stamp of Los Angeles iconography.

THE HARDEST PART OF TELLING THOSE I WAS HOMELESS IS TRYING TO FORM THE REST OF THE STORY...

I

don’t try to bury those memories often; I have to restrain myself from actually talking about some of the darkest things I saw. It’s a rather unusual feeling. I want to talk about it, but sometimes I have no reason to. Everything else in life I can talk about: my ex-girlfriends, my many jobs over the years, all my wacky adventures in the past. But I can’t talk about my time being homeless.

People who have gone through the ringer like I have don’t have an outreach where we can talk to another person who actually has been homeless.

We have spaces for different ethnic groups, the LGBTQ+ community and others that have someone to talk to about their issues and have more resources to accommodate those needs.

But for homeless people? The university doesn’t provide an outreach program that involves students being able to reach out and talk about their problems that they’ve experienced.

Long Beach State has a nice little website that has some resources, but there’s no building where we can schedule an appointment with a psychiatrist and sit in a lounge chair to talk about the horrors we have seen.

Some of the resources also are ineffective.

Many of these programs that are supposed

to help the homeless are creating justification for living in a tent underneath an overpass or a highway. The reality of it is this: we live in a harsh world, and the homeless are just unfortunately the singular group exiled by the lack of compassion towards people like myself. We’re often used for the photo ops with the city council and maybe once in a while, we get a feature on some news channel about how the city is doing something for us.

I’ve seen this movie before: something gets created, program starts, program falls through, repeat process. When I lived in San Diego and started to dig into the city records, I found it astonishing how many failed buildings there were in the last 50 years: 26. Some of these buildings were still in okay conditions, easily feasible for usage as a homeless shelter. I’m still fairly new to the Long Beach and LA areas, but I am pretty sure that there are more than 26 failed projects on file.

Maybe someday, the city can wake up and realize how much they’re hurting the homeless community by continuously putting us through trial and error rather than finding something concrete. LBCC recently announced it would

open up 15 parking spots for students to spend their nights in their cars, but that’s before it was said that there were nearly 70 or more students living in such conditions. That’s still a growing problem that we seem to lack accommodations for as we open up the doors for resolutions little by little.

At the end of the day, we have to hide in our tents away from the flashing lights and police in order to salvage one night without having to move. You can argue that the city and the university are trying their best to find applicable solutions, but I see it as part of the city’s push to move the homeless out of the city and further south.

What the city needs to start pushing for is the usage of older, abandoned buildings as a shelter in order to utilize the space for children and young adults since they’re more likely to be at-risk for homelessness. LBSU could look for the same option: we have money to expand on livable dorms with state-of-the-art features, why not consider creating one for homeless students?

Offer students the same resources, especially if the university is attempting to push itself towards being a “social mobility university.”

But we’ll never know.

CARVING OUT THEIR PLACE

THE COLLEGE EXPERIENCE FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF NON TRADITIONAL STUDENTS

F

or most students, the transition into LBSU has a learning curve, not only academically, but also financially and socially. For some, such as transfer, international, and mature students, the learning curve is often steeper. These students are often juggling complicated credit transfer policies, adjusting to a foreign country, or balancing multiple jobs while trying to make friends in a new environment. Unfortunately, with the advent of online learning during the Covid-19 pandemic, some of the social barriers that nontraditional students face have been compounded.

Adequate social support, both from other students and faculty, makes a huge difference in how well these students handle unique challenges. The perspectives of nontraditional students offer unique feedback on how LBSU’s resources help, where they need work, and how the ‘college experience’ doesn’t look the same for everyone.

For Marina Ilic, an international student from Sweden, her first semester has come with a basketful of new responsibilities to handle. She was introduced to LBSU through her study abroad agency in Sweden and decided it was right for her because of its proximity to the beach, beautiful campus, and the area’s diversity. So far, those aspects have been what she has hoped: “What I’ve enjoyed the most is probably the close proximity to the beach… there is something to do or places/ restaurants/shops/malls around every corner. If you want to get out and do something you always have options. I like that it isn’t too far to drive to Newport or Huntington so that you can discover new places.” Although at times she has felt “overwhelmed with moving so far away, living alone for the first time, and also having a lot of school work”, she finds the resources offered to students have helped her, citing study groups, office hours, and major specific support groups.

Managing academics, especially with the complications of transfer credits and major specific requirements, are often struggles for transfer students to navigate. For Stephanie Corado, a senior who transferred to LBSU last year from Pasadena City College, she remembers how nervous she was about arranging her schedule to graduate without too many speedbumps. She felt relieved when advisors reached out to help her, making her class choices less of a challenge. But forming a social support network was not a similarly seamless experience: “One thing about school I enjoyed was meeting new people and having all classes on Zoom made it difficult to get to know classmates or make study groups.” As most students transfer after their second year, the time constraint of only being at a college for two years makes it difficult to find a community before graduating. Still, Corado says, “I’m just thankful that I at least got to experience the campus in person before I graduated and got to know some of my classmates and professors.”

Another transfer student, Isabella Terrazes, who is now in her third semester at LBSU, described a disconnect in people’s expectations of her and her own experiences: “I feel like I’m new and still learning how to do things like a lot of freshmen.”

Since she completed many GEs while in highschool through her local community college, she was able to transfer in as a sophomore. During her first year at LBSU, online classes were the only options so she didn’t make many friends. Now that campus has opened up, she enjoys going to the tabletop board-game club and spending time at the wellness center swimming, weight lifting, and rock-climbing. When reflecting on whether she has found community this semester, Terrazes answered, “I think I’m beginning to, it was definitely a really big adjustment but I have high hopes that

the longer I’m here the more I’ll settle.”

The sentiment of not fitting in with the demographic of your classes is also expressed by students who are outside of the standard age range of the average college student. At 25, Cody Messerer, a business major graduating this year, often finds himself in classes with students who are several years younger than him. Although he was originally going to community college full time while working full time, he decided to switch to parttime when he began having health struggles due to stress. Being responsible for himself financially since 17, he didn’t have the option to stop working so he decided to take a step back.

However, taking his time with college has given him more clarity on what he wants to do for his career. Unlike plenty of college graduates who go into a field entirely different from what their bachelor’s was in, Messerer feels confident he will use his degree and work experience in his future career. Through LBSU’s job fairs, mentorship programs, and corporate membership programs he has found it “easier to connect to those who have similar goals.” His advice for students in similar positions to him or those who are struggling to balance everything reflects the perspective that life experiences bring: “There’s no need to rush through college right away, if you feel burnt out do not hesitate to take a break, college will still be there.”

Although nearly 38,000 students take classes at LBSU every semester, each student’s experience will be individual. For nontraditional students, who often have to go out of their way to integrate into the LBSU community while managing other responsibilities, they often leave with distinct experiences.

needed a community. Something to relate to other people with. Something spatial, concrete, and perpetual.

Then I found the gap.

Supposedly, if you are walking to campus from the north, you will pass the Go Beach sign and make a sharp left into the open path ahead of you.

A concrete walking path that takes you past the USU and up the escalators. It is wide and welcomes you.

But I do not embrace the open path, I make an oblique for the gap. In between a column and a wall.

The gap. The allure of a shortcut. The illusion of free choice. What is its purpose but to tempt.

The snake in the garden of Eden, whispering in the student’s ear to forsake convention. You see it ahead of you. Do you go through the main walkway, or take the adventurous route?

Robert Frost said, “Two roads diverged in a wood, and I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference.”

I say, “Two paths diverged in a college campus, and I took the one that seems slightly shorter, and that has made small the difference.”

efficient.”

But of course the gap is a threat. If I keep using the gap, I might start considering other shortcuts.

Going through the USU instead of taking the stretch of stairs. Cutting across the grass. Traipsing through a planter of succulents. What will I do when the escalator stops working again? Will I be discouraged to continue the rest of the day? Or will I occupy myself by trying to find another shortcut?

Will I keep thinking about shortcuts until I am late for class?

The gap is the sun, and I am Icarus, destined to fly too close and have my wings melt away.

But I love the gap. I praise the gap. I join the chorus of Long Beach students that worship the gap. All of us, business and art majors, freshman and seniors, local and international, we are united by our love and momentary indulgence in the one and only gap.

HOW CONSUMERISM HAS AFFECTED COLLEGE COLLEGE MARKETING RAISES QUESTIONS ABOUT POSTSECONDARY ECUATION

I

t began in high school, toward the end of sophomore year or the beginning of junior year.

Colleges started sending mail that shared with me all the exciting benefits of paying them tens of thousands of dollars per year, often on flyers with disturbingly clashing color schemes. Almost every high school student who has taken a standardized test, carelessly opted into allowing colleges to view their information, and promptly forgotten about it, has experienced it. Although being bombarded with advertisements can quickly begin to feel like an exorbitant waste of paper, it encourages students who are interested in college to begin considering their options. However, it also points to the intense commodification of college and the negative effects it has had on post-secondary education and college students.

There is nothing inherently wrong with colleges advertising themselves to potential applicants. If students are signing loans for thousands of dollars at the tender age of 18, it’s helpful to be informed of their options. But the way colleges market themselves to impressionable teenagers often calls into question whether post-secondary institutions have a solidified mission or if that mission is simply to maximize revenue.

Each flyer, letter, and the occasional email had a general theme of highlighting the best points of their colleges. They advertise their rankings, their networking connections, their career outcomes for graduates. After the practical bits are out of the way, they move on to student life perks: clubs,

campuses, location, and various other amenities which relate less and less to education. Finally, they point out their robust financial programs that are almost always less impressive than they make it out to be.

For most students, getting a degree is essential to getting a job that will cover their adulthood expenses comfortably. What a high school student applying to college prioritizes depends heavily on their background. For lower income students, it’s the ticket to a middle class life with fewer financial stresses.

As the market for colleges becomes more competitive, students strive to become more competitive to colleges as well. Students entering high school plan out their four years, focusing heavily on good test scores, a shining extracurricular report, and volunteer involvement to appeal to whatever colleges that they believe will offer them opportunities and be an enjoyable place to spend four years.

What’s bad about any of these things? It makes sense colleges would want to appeal to students and students would like to appeal to the colleges they like. A sort of mutually beneficial relationship, right?

Unfortunately, that’s not the case. According to a 2020 Forbes article, “College Tuition is Rising at Twice the Rate of Inflation- While Students Learn from Home,” the price of college has increased at double the rate of inflation since the 1980s (Zenger News). Grants from the government have increased as well, but not enough to cover the same percentage of those costs they used to. According to the Board of Governments of the Federal Reserve System, the current student debt is at $1.75 trillion as of Quarter 3 of 2021 (data retrieved from FRED). The rising cost of college has changed the way students view higher education, what they

demand from universities, and what colleges prioritize in their annual budgets.

Attitudes toward education have completely changed. Speaking to parents and friends’ parents, many of them seemed to have chosen majors because they were interested in that field: history, psychology, engineering. Nowadays, that casual attitude towards choosing a bachelor’s degree is laughable. Degrees with low return on investment are discouraged by counselors. Practicality is key for the majority of students. The amount of jobs that require a college degree is skyrocketing even as degrees become less and less valuable without experience. Students evaluate and primarily view education as a job factory.

When the cost of entry is so high, students need to know they will be able to pay their loans off sooner than a decade. Although the competition colleges face from other institutions would seem to suggest students are in control, complaints of students paying an arm and leg for education points to the opposite. Maybe it’s because a lot of them don’t feel like there are any other options. Meanwhile, colleges struggle to cover the rising costs of paying faculty, operating facilities, and amenities despite rising tuition.

As college education has become commoditized, it has led to a vicious cycle that is damaging to both students and colleges. Whether colleges will refine their missions to lower costs, or more highschool students will opt out of college education as costs rise, only time will tell.

or this visual assignment which questions how consumerism affects the holidays, I immediately knew that I wanted to complicate this lens by drawing inspiration from my own experiences with consumerism and transnational economies growing up in a border town, Calexico.

First, through black and white film photographs of still-life arrangements, I wanted to acknowledge the genuine pleasure and joy that we get from the acquisition and ownership of nice things. By stripping the compositions of color, I was curious about an aesthetic that spoke to timeless opulence

as bright glass decanters or toiletries are neatly arranged and composed to indicate a holiday feel. Then, I took advantage of the Thanksgiving break and my trip to Calexico to take images of the consumerist scene there, specifically focusing on the Gran Plaza Outlets situated right along the border between Calexico, CA, and Mexicali, Mexico. Having grown up in this hybrid city, I have seen the ways in which our economies are linked, as citizens from Mexicali will travel across the border for holiday shopping. Here, I wanted to move beyond the simple notion that consumer-

ism takes over the holidays, and instead wanted to focus on the way in which this consumerism is actually essential for border economies. Thus, the images I made within this environment were meant to explicitly address border culture, and how even with increased militarization at the border in recent years, the two cities are still very much economically connected. Overall, my intent was to provide nuance to the idea of consumerism beyond our surface understanding of it by mixing a range of seemingly unrelated images.

oo many people have too many opinions; capitalism, consumerism, they’re all part of the many problems that affect us all. Yet, we seldom have the means to enact change on our own. If only we listened to experts, instead of relying on word of mouth from strangers on social media, then perhaps many problems could be solved. But one of the oldest constants in human history regards the most dreaded word in the dictionary: taxes. For thousands of years, nobody has been able to crack this topic, so that’s why I, a liberal arts major, am exactly the person to ask the hard questions.

What’s the deal with taxes, anyway? We all work hard for our money. Look at the many incredible articles in this issue, such as Carlos Fuentes’ one on holiday gifts—and in my unbiased opinion—the article about saving money as a student. That’s

why it is such a shame when we must take time out of our busy lives to file taxes when we should be shopping.

The government is like a bad friend who you loan money to, but then feel forced to ask for it back.

You know they’re good for it, so why do they make you jump through hoops just to get back your own money every year? They owe us, so the burden should be on them.

However, a bunch of crooks got together and promised that they would con all of us citizens by making the onus on us, instead. H&R Block, more like H&R… Blockheads. We’ve got work, and kids to feed, and movies to stream, we should not be required to pay corporations money to sit in those too-small, plastic chairs as terrible music blares.

And it is insane that if you make a mistake they’ll come after you.

But there is a way to alleviate these problems.

The government must maintain free websites to submit your tax records, albeit with a small filing fee. For example, visit www.freetaxusa.com and easily input any information asked. I have no proof, but I’m pretty sure that the people in charge of

these tax-filing rackets want it to seem like a scary process, when in fact it’s completely manageable on a quiet afternoon, relaxing in pajamas in the comfort of your own bed.

Additionally, depending on your location, there are always services available with trained representatives to help you file for free if you make under a certain bracket. Look up the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program near you. The best day of my life is going to be when that H&R Block across my street finally closes and they take down that silly cutout of a man smiling in such a smug manner.

If I worked for the IRS, I would only go after the ‘whales.’ The only reason they don’t is they know people in that income level have access to their lawyers on retainer. I don’t even know how you get a lawyer, do you just drive around looking for a bus bench ad?

THE FAÇADE OF PERFORMATIVE FEMINISM DAMAGES THE ACTUAL CAUSE

A

re you a good person? How about you prove it by reposting pretty pastel-colored infographics on your Instagram story? Surface-level allyship is a glaring issue that sprouted after the George Floyd protests in 2020.

People rushed to do the bare minimum and post black squares to show their support, not really contributing to the actual movement at hand. This has also long been a problem in feminism. Performative white feminism, propagated by media such as Buzzfeed, has plagued the feminist movement, ultimately steering the conversation away from intersectionality and treating such issues as a trending topic.

In the mid 2010s, large media company Buzzfeed started to post thought-provoking “woke” videos on Youtube. Certain videos of theirs include “Women Try Manspreading for a Week,” “36 Questions for Men,” and “9 Comebacks Feminists Would Be Proud Of.” These videos surely tried to put a spotlight on what vexes women, but the meaning twisted into the notions of “Men ruin everything” and “Men’s existence is terrible.” It also culminated

into a new wave of “white feminism.” The movement shifted to focus on men and white women’s feelings rather than advocating for women’s rights and equality between all genders overall. Buzzfeed never made the same amount of content or put in the effort about intersectional issues, leaving people such as women of color behind and isolated.

One of Buzzfeed’s most controversial videos was titled “Women Paint with Their Period Blood.” This extremely performative video got its expected backlash, but the issue remained that white solutions such as this were put at the forefront instead of actual ways to contribute to the movement.

Due to these empty actions and toxic ideas promoted by Buzzfeed, white feminism permeated society. Why should we be focusing on manspreading when there are more pressing issues at hand?

Where is the same energy for problems such as trans women’s health and safety, bias in the medical field against black women, or pay inequality between white women and women of color? This also bleeds into the performative posting. Infographics posted on people’s stories echoed the same ideas reminiscent of Buzzfeed’s videos. Most of these infographics of white feminism promote “girlboss” solutions, watering down intersectional issues to just diversity and inclusion.

Posting about these issues on Instagram and other social media sites has also served to trivialize the problem. There is information spread around about intersectional issues, but people stop posting about it when these issues fade away from the spotlight, even though that is not the reality of the world. Problems do not just disappear when they are not trending anymore. It must be an ongoing conversation, not a temporary pretty story that is only up for 24 hours at a time. It is also a problem that people can tap through five posts in under thirty seconds. Social media is fast, people scroll

away as soon as they are bored. Of course, these types of posts do spread awareness, but it overall does nothing to help when there are no resources or citations provided. There are also rarely any tangible actions attached to the simple post. At this point, posting such infographics only points to virtue signaling.

In order to dismantle white feminism and to actively promote intersectionality, people must put in the work. Instead of blindly reposting pretty graphics that echo empty words such as “EMPOWER WOMEN” or “BE A GIRLBOSS!”, go beyond temporary stories that a person can easily swipe through. A good start to removing that inter-

The book explores the history of white women’s role in white supremacy and why we must confront it to further promote equality for all. Additionally, make space to listen to those around you and acknowledge the privilege you may have. Learn how you can truly help your community and actually dedicate your time to places such as women’s shelters in your area or your local Planned Parenthood.

Putting on a show on social media that you are a good person does not mean you’re a good person.

Act on it, and truly enact change.

EMBRACING FEMININITY SHOULDN’T HAVE TO BE A NEGATIVE EXPERIENCE

G

rowing up, I wanted nothing more than to be what I thought my dad wanted me to be, a boy. I knew I could never be that so I strived for the next best thing, being a tomboy.

For as long as I could remember, being feminine was frowned upon by those who were around me.

So anything that was considered a trait of a girl, I got rid of to the best of my ability. I didn’t cry, I didn’t wear pink, and I especially didn’t wear dresses.

I remember disliking others who were too “girly” and expressed their feminine side. Looking back, I think I was jealous because they were allowed to be what I couldn’t: themselves. The girl I deemed my “enemy” was the one who wore pink every day, put on makeup, or in her case, lipgloss and glitter from Claire’s, and she wasn’t afraid to let her emotions shine. She might never know that it wasn’t her fault and that it was my issues overtaking me.

I surrounded myself with friends who dressed like me and boys who I played sports with. In my mind, if I hung out with boys and was able to fit in, it was like I was one of them. If I was good enough to be in their friend group, I would be good enough for my father. I would later learn that nothing was ever going to be good enough.

I let my grades slip and I put everything into being the best on an all-boys baseball team. I felt like I had something to prove. It was a hell of a lot of work just to have him show up to one of my games every season.

It worked for a while, but when middle school came around, everything changed. I changed. Even though middle school was an awkward time for all, it was when I started to dress how I wanted and express myself more than ever.

Around this time, I moved in with my mother and realized that I didn’t have to change myself to earn love from a parent. With my mother, I was my most authentic self and I was the happiest I had ever been. She taught me how to never take any crap from any man and to never back down from a staring contest with a guy who is trying to make you feel uncomfortable.

When I was young, I was always led to believe that being a woman was a weakness and showing just a hint of femininity would be my downfall. However when I got to high school, I quickly learned that femininity didn’t equal fragility, and being a woman came with more power than I had ever realized.

In high school, I found myself surrounded by female teachers who radiated badass energy and held so much power in their hands. My male classmates and heck, even the male teachers at my school feared them and felt threatened by them. Seeing their strength made me realize why men want women to reject themselves and cast away their

feminine sides. If all women knew the control they could have over themselves and others, we could take over the world. We would be unstoppable.

Most importantly, we wouldn’t need men anymore.

I’ve come to understand that being like “one of the guys” and viewing other women as the enemy was embedded into my brain by a man who didn’t want to see me succeed. Now in the age of social media, I’ve seen solidarity and empowerment between women, especially on TikTok. I remember the times when I would roll my eyes and pretend to gag anytime I thought someone was being “too girly,” but now I cheer them on and smile.

Growing up for me meant learning that I didn’t have to change and hide my true self in order to please men. I know now that I can dress however I want and show as much emotion as I please because pleasing men is the last thing women should care about.

If you’re scared of women rising up against the patriarchy, taking over, and creating the perfect utopia that is safe for women everywhere, just say that.

HERE WE ARE, TWO YEARS AFTER THE START OF THE PANDEMIC

R

oughly two years ago, spring break was extended an extra week for faculty and students to prepare for the shift to online learning. Part of the student population returned to the campus for the fall 2021 semester, but now in the spring 2022 semester almost all students are back on campus and most classes are in-person. During these two years, I had forgotten how many people attended LBSU, and upon returning in February my senses were dazed by all the stimuli. The sound of feet clattering against the pavement, hundreds of half-shown faces to see, and the occasional slight shoulder bump or run in.

I realized that this was the first time in two years I had been surrounded by this many people. Even though it was a lot to take in a first, part of me will admit that I missed it. It’s nice to see that my classmates are more than names attached to a black box.

Now a month after returning to campus, I overhear conversations and listen to sighs of relief.

Everyone seems to be happy that “it’s all over now” and “that things are going back to normal.” I’m not

sure what they mean by normal. Solicitors ask me to sign their petitions, but still I say no, I continue to walk through The Gap, and I can depend on the escalator to malfunction in the future. Everything feels like it’s back to normal, and yet part of me knows this isn’t true. I don’t think there is a normal to go back to.

All of us are eager to return to our pre-pandemic way of life, but a lot has changed for us over the past two years. People lost their jobs and couldn’t afford to pay rent, watched their loved ones pass away from Covid-19, and felt their mental health deteriorating from the isolation. While we’ve endured through the pandemic and made it this far, many of us are not the same as before. Everyone is running towards the future, so that the pandemic may be put behind us. One day, when we look back we’ll hope to have the faintest memories of these years, and that all of it will appear to be the fragments of a dream. Even though we may feel like we are moving forwards, we are only reaching for a life that is in the past. Progress cannot be made as long as we keep bargaining with Time, asking to take us back two years ago. We must face the fact that the pre-pandemic world is lost to the past, and we must leave it behind as we find our way into a post-pandemic world, one that will inevitably be new to us all.

I’m not saying Covid-19 will rule for the rest of our lives and we will have to wear masks until the day we die, because I believe that to be too dramatic. Eventually, most people will have gained resistance either by vaccine or natural immunity.

The end will be anticlimactic and we’ll hardly feel victorious. All that will be left are the smoldering ashes of a once great fire as the last of its smoke dissipates into the atmosphere. Life will carry on, and many of us will forget everything we learned during those two years. We are bound to repeat our mistakes, because that is human nature, and so I’m left wondering if all of the lives lost during the pandemic were in vain.

Even though it might feel as such, I don’t believe this has to be our conclusion. I know everyone wants to move on with their lives and cast these events into the deepest pits of our minds to be forgotten, but that cannot be our solution. All of us have changed during this pandemic, and so lives may never be the same again, but that is okay.

We must hold on to everything we have learned during this time, in order to not repeat the same mistakes in the future. Everyone holds the same responsibility, and so if another pandemic were to cause havoc on our world again, we can this time approach it as a collective. Maybe then we won’t have to put our lives on pause for two years.

˚T R E E C H R O N I C L E S ˚ SPENDING 12 HOURS STRAIGHT SITTING UNDER A TREE ON LONG BEACH STATE CAMPUS 9 a.m.

I have come unfortunately unprepared with no food, no water. Just a guy, his surroundings, and some books. Pretty sweet set up for a tree though so part of me believes this whole thing won’t be so bad. At least it’s nice out. It’s one of those days where we dance around 70 degrees. Very few people come through campus on a Friday morning and it’s still too early for much general life to be about. It’s peaceful, so I think I’m going to start out by reading before the sun starts baking me later.

10 a.m.

Pretty simple first hour. Nothing’s changed. My butt doesn’t hurt so that’s a plus. You know Target sells lawn chairs for $40? Why would they do that when they also sell this $14 one that doesn’t entirely suck.

11 a.m.

It’s hitting me right now that I didn’t charge my phone last night and the little I did get to charge it before I left my dorm is only going to last me until maybe 1 or 2 p.m. if I keep using it. I don’t even think I can keep listening to Earth, Wind & Fire, the greatest producers of soul ever, anymore or else my 20% won’t last. Guess it’s time to really start getting into the mindset of a tree soon.

1 p.m.

My editor in chief Andres Leon recognized me and we met in-person for the first time. I felt weird given the circumstances, that being that I’m running on maybe three or four hours of sleep. I’m getting seriously hungry and I couldn’t get up. Brutal lesson: Trees can’t dap people up.

2 p.m.

The sun has finally positioned itself so that it shines directly at me. I don’t know what it is, but direct sunlight like this just makes me super tired. I’m extremely comfortable in my chair too. That’s what sucks though. I could totally fall asleep right now and have the best nap of my life, but I can’t. I am moving in and out of sleep and the only thing keeping me up is the need to stay awake to make

sure my stuff doesn’t get taken. I just gotta keep fighting it.

3 p.m.

This is stupid.

4 p.m.

This is the best and I am literally the luckiest guy ever. My phone was at 5% and I got a call from a job I applied for almost 2 months ago asking for an interview. A squirrel has also decided to eat and hang right by me for the better part of an hour. I’ve named him Paco. He’s a little dude who I heard rummaging behind me and when I put out my hand to him like you would to a cat he came up to me and looked at my palm as if I was going to feed him. Even though I had nothing for him though he’s still sticking around right by me.

5 p.m.

Everything is falling apart. Paco is gone and I don’t know where he went. No more funny squirrel munching sounds and watching him chase off other squirrel trespassers on his domain. My phone is completely dead so I’m going to have to rely on my laptop from here on. The chair has decided to give out because I kept resting my elbow and subsequently my entire upper body on one arm of the chair. I am now sitting on the ground for the rest of the time here with my only saving grace now being two friends of mine picking up food for me.

Hopefully that sweet sweet Chick-Fil-A will keep me going.

6 p.m.

A friend of mine happened to have been walking by and grabbed one of the outdoor chairs between two buildings for me. Not as comfy as the lawn chair, but definitely an improvement above the ground. The food also came in. Awesome. Best part of this whole tree thing is the whole getting food without moving deal. But I guess trees don’t have to beg their friends to take their debit cards and pick up some sustenance.

7 p.m.

It has gotten really cold really fast over the last hour. This is the hardest the day has been and I think it’s only going to get worse. The warmth from my laptop as I write is the only thing helping my hands right now so I’m just going to keep typing.

The weird thing about the last ten hours is how simultaneously I’ve talked to and interacted with no one, and how much I’ve gotten out of the select few conversations I’ve actually had. I think there’s something very strange but valuable in the occasion of talking to someone then being forced to sit in complete silence while they get to go off and get distracted by the rest of their day.

I consider myself someone who finds a lot of value in the little interactions with people I talk to whether they are close friends or random strangers I’ll never meet again. But sitting here, being forced to be subdued in thought of every interaction I’ve had because there’s nothing else to distract myself with anymore, has really been doing something to my head.

The way we communicate and give each other little information through the slightest actions is immensely undermined by the next distraction we give ourselves just a few seconds later.

Maybe this is the answer I’ve been looking for when wondering why people can be so dismissive of others’ issues and flaws as something they can just go ahead and dislike them for rather than thinking for a moment that this person really, genuinely, doesn’t know any better and the signs that they don’t are clear.

Or maybe I’m just trying to keep my hands from freezing right now.

9 p.m.

I’m writing this ten minutes before nine so that I can just hurry up and get out of here. Everything was good and fine, the weather, the people, the seat. It’s just the last quarter that really made this horrible because for the last two hours, everything’s been gone. No sun, no people, the comfortable seat has been replaced by a metal chair getting just as cold as everything else.

I hope you’ve found some semblance of a lesson in all this. What I’ve found is don’t be a tree.

I found only solace in food. I did not denote any foods as good or bad. Food meant that I was in the presence of my rather large family who instilled the idea of tradition in its younger generation through old recipes and time spent cooking and eating together. I yearn to be young again, a time in my life where I enjoyed food so unapologetically and so earnestly.

Outside of my family gatherings, the kisses on the cheek after a meal were replaced with a chorus of laughter from my peers. I was proud of how much I could eat. I was proud of the diverse palette I had compared to other kids my age. However, this pride turned to shame as I got older and kids became meaner. Sure, my parents got mad when I stopped eating my lunches but at least the kids at school had one less reason to torment me.

It was as my body began to change with puberty and the looming threat of depression that I realized I had to force myself to be afraid of food, I thought.

In my head, eating food meant gaining weight.

Gaining weight meant “looking fat.” “Looking fat” in middle school meant having a target on my back. I equated not eating with surviving socially and quickly turned my enthusiasm for food into an enthusiasm for thinness.

Alas, thinness never came for me. During these years of restrictive and harmful eating I quickly learned that discrimination toward plus-size people seeped its way into every corner of our lives.

I not only had to endure this treatment at school, but at a place everyone should feel comfortable, accommodated, and listened to: the doctor’s office.

An entirely different article could be written about the general fear people have of going to the doctor, but for plus-size folks, it’s a whole new

for not only stigmatizing overweight patients but refusing certain tests and treatments under the guise that their suggestion to “lose more weight” is all the treatment that patients need. An editorial in The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) from February 2019 showed that in a survey of primary care doctors, 50% of them “viewed obese patients as awkward, unattractive, ugly, and noncompliant.”

My first run-in with a doctor like this was when I was 13. A pretty formative age, right? They did not seem to care. I went in for a routine physical, and I left being told that I needed to lose 70 pounds. She gave me no resources. No pamphlets. Nothing. She said “See you back in three months. Hope you’ll make some progress,” then slammed the door in my face. What did she think the outcome of her words would be? That I would come back in three months 70 pounds lighter, ready to be the poster kid for beating childhood obesity? Her words have stuck with me for the rest of my life, regardless of how much I have grown as a person. Hearing such daunting, fear-mongering language from healthcare professionals makes plus-size people scared to ask questions, which can prolong what underlying condition remains undiagnosed at the hands of biased doctors.

“Noncompliant” is the word from that survey that stings particularly bad. I hate to make such a simple statement, but fat people have lives too. Fat people work long hours and have bills to pay, homes to take care of, and in some cases, kids too! Fat people, just like a majority of society, are under the strain of tumultuous, busy lives that don’t facilitate the most time for thinking about yourself and your own health. It’s such a sad truth to write, but it’s my own as well.

I’m a full-time student who commutes. I work

part-time. I’m internship hunting. At the end of the day, the only thing on my mind is making up for the day’s lack of food in any way, shape, or form and getting into bed. I am constantly beating myself up for not having a “rise and grind” mentality. Why shouldn’t I get up at 5 a.m. to go on a run? Other people do it! Why can’t I meal prep for the week and calorie count as I cook? Other people do it! This is where the fear begins to dissipate. I am not “other people.” “Other people” are not me.

No one has the same body as another person.

We are all unique in our body composition, our metabolism, and our cravings. No one else has the same 24 hours, either. Of course, people who have ample time and money find it easy to work out and meal prep and find “healthy food” with ease. Folks who, in comparison, have little time and money use whatever leftovers they have of each to find some semblance of peace in their lives. The “calories in, calories out” agenda that gets pushed on us by influencers and fitness gurus is proof that people who have a more flexible 24 hours find that burning off all of the food you ate that day is feasible. It is in fact not feasible. For so many people. We cannot continue to assume that all people are affronted the same resources, just as we are all not given the same time in the day.

With these realizations, I gave new life to my body. I reveled in every stretch mark, every freckle, and every part of me that caved in with the push of a finger. It felt like my own for the first time in a long time. How could I do this same thing with food?

How could I prevent myself from almost cowering in fear to something that is an absolute life force for all creatures on this planet?

I began to associate food with new memories.

Memories that live inside of this newfound body.

Now, food is the Taiwanese restaurant in Highland Park that me and my sister visit so often the workers become sick of us. Food is the car

packed with friends I took through the Taco Bell drive through in the dead of night because one person said “potato taco” and everyone nodded in agreement. Food is the bagels me and my friends got before saying goodbye to our friend one last time before she went away to school. Food is sending a mandatory picture to that same group chat of friends everytime one of us gets a bagel.

Food is looking around at my friend’s everytime we see each other, and remembering when I was too scared to eat around them, instead being happy as we stand in one of our kitchens, cooking pasta and playing music and laughing amongst food we have made to enjoy.

For anyone reading this and struggling with eating and/or body image issues, please understand what I am about to say. No two people have the same way of making it over this hurdle.

I almost forced myself to find peace. You may not be capable of that, and it’s okay. Be patient with yourself. Be kind to yourself. Find solace in the people in your life that affirm and understand your struggles. While these support systems are important, seek to find comfort in yourself.

Comfort in your own body. Comfort in the food that fuels that body.
