Reflecting the Horizon

Reflection

The Library slopes up from the low-lying neighboorhoods south of the park toward’s the downtown skyscrapers in the north, creating a visual gradient in the city’s skyline.

This dual-winged Presidential Library serves as both a tourist destination and a local community center.

With galleries and a museum in the East Wing, and a recreational hub in the West Wing, the building’s central section - which houses the library, auditorium, and meeting rooms - serves as a bridge from the old to the new.

This project was designed in collaboration with ACE CHICAGO TEAM 5 and awarded first runner-up in the 2017 Construction Industry Round Table National Design Challenge. My contributions to the project include design of the building’s program and circulation through section and plan drawings, as well as concepts about the building’s form.

While paying homage to American federal buildings through arches, stylized columns, and symmetrical design, the Library’s curtain wall enclosure of reflective glass reminds Chicagoans to look towards the future on the horizon.

To take advantage of the building’s proximity to University of Chicago, Hyde Park Academy, a YMCA, a Metra Train Station, and local residences, the building is placed centrally on the park’s footprint and connected to points of interests by

Plan

The building’s west wing houses all recreational programming, while the east wing provides museum, cafeteria, and office facilities to serve visitors. The building’s primary purpose is housed in the center, where the library and auditorium serve as informational hubs to the community.

Library Entrance

The terraced slope is a transition from the park’s foliage to the building’s interior. The south-facing O-shaped portal, visually reminiscent of Obama’s iconic logo, serves as a culmination to the ascent and a transition into the Presidential Library located on the building’s second floor.

Section

The central section’s intricate program features a partiallyunderground auditorium, skyline overlooks, meeting corridors, and two entrances: one for local residents to quickly access community resources, and one for visitors to enter the library and museum.

Bronzeville - Chicago, IL

Standing on the site of demolished housing projects, this brick building serves as a symbol of a resilient community. Despite its uniquely formed front and rear glass facades, the endpoints of the building match that of the adjacent row-style buildings, helping the atypical design to fit contextually into the site. The first floor houses a cafe and community workspace, while the upper level features meeting rooms and flexible “collaboration corners.” The rooftop features picnic tables, bench/planter combos, and chaises for Bronzeville residents to find oasis in the midst of a bustling metropolis.

The design discovery program was an exploration in architecture for high school students. The program divided one lot into parcels for each student and prompted them to design a space that brings life to the neighborhood.
