About The Project MakerCraft Space- a space to meet and share and make items based on your chosen craft technique

Public Hall – an atmospheric volumetric where architecture's physical and expressive qualities are centre stage.

Workshop Space- a space with tools and equipment to experiment with the transition between a handcraft technique and another process.

This project asks us to apply our imagination, a range of information, experiences, and skills to create original small-scale designs that form a part of the city of Manchester.

This project involves three distinct ways of forming social and technical connections to a site, people in the city, and architectural space through the exploration of craft techniques.

BUILDING TYPOLOGIES The map shows the diverse range of uses of the buildings in the surrounding. A dominance of retail, hotels, and restaurants makes it a lively district that attracts tourists from the station. This, therefore, creates a strong base for cafes and museums, which might face problems in drawing in people in less popular areas.

This figure shows a high amount of built space and a lack of parks with only three in the area. Hence, more green areas are required to improve the physical and psychological health of those in the area.

Conservation And Aesthetics Study

Most buildings on the site are modern with a few postwar. Hence the building design should be modern to gel better.

Building design should be modern.

The glass exterior of the City Tower dominates the west and stone and brick buildings from the east side of Piccadilly Gardens. Creating a glass building on the east would balance the skyline.

Precedent Studies Benzie Building And Chatham Building Manchester M15 6BR Image 17

Studying in the Chatham building myself, I am truly impressed with its architecture and all the innovative spaces it has to offer. The building is a masterpiece and consists of large studio rooms for students where they can create and build models, display areas, an art shop for all the supplies required for students, workshops with 3D printers and other useful tools and machines.

Large Open Spaces And Self Directing Design A great self-explanatory design that lets people follow paths to their requirements by guiding them naturally towards it.

Each room and corridor is easily accessible. Corridors are simple, clear and well lit to avoid confusion. The staircases and bridges not only move people as a function but also add a unique appealing aesthetic to the building.

Large Open Spaces make the building feel spacious.

I plan on using tall ceilings to achieve a similar effect.

Connectivity And Lighting

A series of large staircases and bridge walkways connect the whole building together.

I wish to connect my building in a similar way.

Large glass panels dominate the exterior which lets plenty of natural light into the building.

Unique Staircase As An Attraction A unique and large magnificent staircase is an attraction of the building which creates a new atmosphere in the building with interesting spaces built around it such as a café or art display wall under the staircase.

I plan on designing a unique staircase to form an attraction in the building,

The Benzie And Chatham Building comprise large workshop areas where create. These rooms are filled with machines, tools and equipment.

I plan on creating similar workshop spaces in my building for the craftsman to create the best craftwork.

The Chatham Building comprises large studio rooms where students design and innovate. These rooms have large glass windows which provide plenty of light.

I wish to create similar studio spaces in my building for the craftsman to create the best craftwork.

Bridge

This bridge connects the Chatham and Benzie building to the Old Art School in Manchester.

I wish to use it as an inspiration to design a bridge that connects my public hall to the maker space.

Large Outdoor Spaces And Courtyards Image 21

Terraces provide a break and fresh air to all the hard-working, stressed people in the building. The large terrace can also be used for events and exhibitions. I plan to add terraces to my building.

Cafes are important as they provide breaks and help destress people.

I wish to add a café in my building so the craftsman and public can relax and enjoy. Food is a necessity and people don’t have to go elsewhere looking for it.

This helps make the building self-sustainable.

Testing Building Model 1 Problems With The Building: 1. Lack of space 2. Does not showcase craft 3. Does not cooperate with surrounding buildings, it is not cohesive. Appears unnatural to the surroundings.

4. No green space is created. Green space is desperately needed due to the lack of parks in the area but this design offers no such thing.

Most spaces are accessible to everyone, which helps in the interaction between the public and craftsmen. The public can give their input to the craftsmen.

Locker Room Offices Designing the building layout through the bubble diagram helps in understanding what spaces need to be connected and what are separate.

Separating the two buildings reduces the noise in the public hall which is caused by the workshop.

Benefits Of Separating The Two Buildings 1. Reduced Noise-Less noise in the public hall.

The workshop and maker space generate some noise, separating the public hall from them reduces the noise levels in the hall.

2. Improved Working Conditions-The public and craftsmen have separate areas so the craftsmen are not disturbed by the public. The public in general does not come in the way of the craftsmen constantly moving between the makerspace and workshop.

This makes it easier for them to work uninterrupted.

This also prevents accidents and injuries to the public.

3. Green Space- Separating the two buildings leaves some space in between which can be made into a green space for the public.

The site area is small. Hence, the only way to create space is by expanding upwards.

The only way to generate space was to expand upwards and build more floors.

I wish to have plenty of floor space for the workshop and maker space. The only possible solution is to expand horizontally over the existing buildings.

Building Design 2 Problems With The Building And Possible Improvements : 1. Could represent craft better with improved shape.

2. The Public Hall is very small 3. The Public Hall and Craft Building are not connected. Hence, making it inconvenient to transport crafts for display from the maker space to the exhibition hall.

Public Art Installation The space/wall in between the two interconnected buildings can be used for a public art installation such as graffiti.

My idea is to use this wall to showcase Manchester’s impressive skyline as a glass painting for the public to see. This will be a good use of the wall and will attract more people.
