Starting Wednesday, January 4, 2012 Schofield Barracks Middle School/Teen Center (SBMSTC) will be providing Free After-School Bus Transportation from Wahiawa Middle School to the Center. The Center currently transports from Wheeler Middle, Mililani and Leilehua High Schools. All students are required to be current registered CYSS members . All students are also required to have a bus waiver signed with SBMSTC. Students must show Bus Pass to be allowed on SBMSTC buses. LAUHALA WEAVING WORKSHOP Join us and learn the traditional art of weaving leaves of the hala tree that Hawaiians use in creating wonderful crafts including hats, purses, and other accessories. During the class, attendees will learn the history of the art, harvesting and preparing hala leaves, as well as weaving techniques! The class also includes a hands-on activity where you can create your own lauhala bracelet! HULU "FEATHERWORK" WORKSHOP Hulu manu, or bird feathers, were among the most esteemed and cherished belongings of Native Hawaiians. Rare feathers were used to create capes, helmets, leis and hair ornaments, including priceless items such as Kamehameha I's 'ahu'ula (feather cloak). Join us in this workshop and learn the history and art of hulu, and create your very own hulu hair accessory! NIU "COCONUT" WEAVING WORKSHOP The coconut, since its introduction to Hawaii by Polynesian voyagers, has been a significant crop to the Native Hawaiian people due to its versatility in use. The class will cover the history of coconut in Hawaii and share its various uses. Learn how to make specific items like bracelets, hats or headbands using coconut palm fronds. The Niu Weaving class will be headed by Mr. Pita Sala, a Native cultural practitioner and a member of the Honolulu Hawaiian Civic Club. Purchaser must be in line, no stand-ins. 5 November Ladies Golf Clinic Every first Saturday of the month, the Leilehua Golf Course holds a free ladies golf clinic from 1330 to 1500. For more information, please call 655-4653. 12 November Read to the Dogs at the SGT Yano Library Our volunteer therapy and service dogs are non-judgmental and comforting to children who need to practice their reading and improve their fluency. Children who are able to read on their own can sign up for a 15-minute session to read to a dog on 12 November and 10 December. These free sessions are open to all 12 years and older and are from 1730 to 1830. 15 November Children’s Book Club at the SGT Yano Library Children ages 8 thru12 are welcome to join the discussion of popular books. The book club will meet on the 3rd Tuesday of each month from 1530 to 1630. Our first meeting will be on 15 November. Children will select the book for the club and we will read it together. 17 November Keiki Craft Night at the Hale Ikena Bring out the Martha Stewart in you and bring your kids to keiki craft night at Hale Ikena. On 8 November at the Kaena Community Center, 1700 to 2000, enjoy an evening of lei making. A Blue Star Card family will host the evening and demonstrate how to make a simple paper lei for your returning Soldier. After you make your Soldier's lei, stay and help make ones for single Soldiers who do not have families welcoming them home during upcoming welcome home ceremonies. Blue Star Card Bake Off and Coupon Exchange On 15 November from 1000 to 1200, at the Aliamanu Community Center, join the first monthly Bake Off and Coupon Exchange presented by the Blue Star Card Program. Show off your baking skills with a dessert featuring this month's key ingredient, cranberries. If you don’t bake, just come out to trade coupons with your BSC pals, sample the treats, and vote for the best tasting! The winner will be next month's featured recipe. Animoto On 17 November, at the SGT Yano Library, create quick and easy videos to share with your Soldier or loved ones? Bring your digital photos (approximately 30-50 pictures) to the SGT Yano Library at 0915 to learn how to use Animoto. Animoto allows people to make professional looking videos with images and music. BLUE STAR CARD PROGRAM INFORMATION: Blue Star Card and Blue Star Card SUPERSTAR Punch Card The Blue Star Card is a FMWR deployment discount card for Spouses of deployed Soldiers. The card offers Spouses discounts at FMWR facilities, activities and special events. Blue Star Cards are valid throughout the entire deployment. For a full list of Blue Star benefits visit the website at www.bluestarcardhawaii.com. The SUPERSTAR punch card is a recent Blue Star Card initiative. If you attend Blue Star Card events, you will receive a Blue Star Card SUPERSTAR punch card. After attending 10 Blue Star Card events and filling up your punch card, you will receive a FREE Blue Star Card t-shirt! Blue Star Card Event No-Show Policy Starting 1 February, 2011, the Blue Star Card program implemented an event no-show policy. If you register for a Blue Star Card event and cannot attend the event, you must cancel your 4

reservation by 1200 the day before the event. If you fail to cancel your reservation and do not attend, you will be considered a no-show, which will result in you automatically being wait-listed for the next month’s events. It is our goal to include as many Blue Star Card holders as possible in our events, by implementing this policy; we hope to achieve this goal. The Blue Star Card Printer Station has moved to Fort Shafter The Blue Star Card printer station has moved from Tripler ACS to Fort Shafter ACS. Eligible patrons in the Fort Shafter/AMR/TAMC area will need to go to Fort Shafter ACS located at the Fort Shafter Aloha Center, Bldg 330, Clark Road, to get a Blue Star Card. The printer station at Schofield Barracks ACS is still available and unaffected by this move. Regular Blue Star Card registration requirements still apply. Family Advocacy Program FAP Prevention and Education will offer Scream Free Parenting throughout the month of November at ACS, Bldg 2091, Schofield Barracks from 1800 to 1930. This is a four-part parenting curriculum that focuses on helping parents stay calm and connected to their children so they can create loving and meaningful relationships. These groups provide Families with an opportunity to share experiences, gather new information and become knowledgeable about community resources. The goal is to encourage Soldiers and Families to understand their personal finances and learn tools for financial success. Soldiers must bring an EOM LES. Newcomer's Orientation Ho'ike If you are new to Hawaii, come and join the fun at our Ho’ike to learn about ACS services and programs, community resources, Hawaiian culture and customs. The Ho’ike at the Schofield Barracks Nehelani Club is complimented with a FREE luncheon provided by FMWR. Spouses Support Group A Spouse Seminar Group meeting is scheduled for 13 December, 1700 to 2000, at the SFAC Building 692, Schofield Barracks. Social Security Disability Social Security disability benefit meetings are set for 18 November and 9 and 16 December, 1000 to 1300, at the SFAC Building 692, Schofield Barracks. This program is for WTs assigned to Warrior Transition Unit. Social Security representatives will visit the SFAC twice a month to assist Wounded Soldiers file Social Security Disability claims for their injuries. Lei Making for Veterans Day Volunteers are welcome to come and join the Wounded Soldiers make leis to honor all Veterans who have died in the line of duty on 9 November, 1300 to 1630, at the SFAC Building 692, Schofield Barracks. Flowers can be dropped off at anytime on 9 November at building 692, Schofield Barracks. 3. White House Request - Children Holiday Cards The First Lady, Michelle Obama, is asking military children from around the globe to personally contribute to the finishing touches on the White House decorations this holiday season. She is specifically requesting military children to submit 5x8" handmade holiday cards with words of appreciation for their military parents, as well as pictures and drawings. The White House will display as many of the cards as possible. Participants are asked to submit their holiday cards by 16 November and to be sure to include their name, address, and other relevant information.
