Goodbye to the Jordans

On Friday November 26 1st Liphook Scout Group said goodbye to two treasured members of the Group. Theresa and Alan Jordan have lived in Liphook for over 20 years will be moving away from the local area.

The two have been a part of the group almost as long as they have been in the village and will be sorely missed by all. Theresa was a uniformed leader and ran one of

our Scout Groups for a time. She was also the Group Secutary and a key member of the hall committee and ran the Scout Shop for many many years. On top of all these other responsibilities’ she always found time for fundraising helping out wherever possible be it behind the scenes or out it front under the spotlight.

Alan was running Friday Cub pack, Wheatsheaf as Akela and ran his last extremely successful Cub Camp for 1st Liphook back in June last year. Alan also took on the role of quartermaster, this

involved keeping the Groups equipment store tidy, organized and up to date. Alan was also a very keen member of the executive committee, striving to make the group not only one of the biggest in Hampshire but the best in Hampshire.

Notes From the GSL Plans are now being made for the major events, camps and activities for the coming year.

All these events take the leaders and supporters a great deal of time and effect to organise. Parents you can help support us by ensuring that the members do take part are in the right place at the right time with the right equipment. Do not

forget that we are always willing for parents and friends to come along and join in and help and enjoy the fun and adventure as well.

We do need specifc help with the following activities, Canoeing, Archery, Dinghy Sailing Climbing to name just a few.

So if you have a knowledge or skill or would like to learn a skill and then help pass it onto our member please contact us now.

We all need to be flexible but how little or Bryan Jackson much time you can give or help can still make a Group Scout Leader difference and help us provide the various opportunities to our members.

Arctic Post

On December 19th a team of vollenteers headed by Petersfield District Network Scouts battled through the arctic conditions to deliver Christmas cards in Liphook and Bramshott.

Coffee Morning

Success The 4th of December saw our coffee/ Christmas Fayre . This was a great success , raising just under ÂŁ 250 for the group .

Despite the awful weather conditions the event was well attended and a special thanks go to all those who helped and attended on the day .

Well done to Janet King for winning the best decorated Christmas cake , and Fay Boyett for guessing the weight of the cake and we hope you enjoyed eating it ! Other stalls included a raffle , Scout xmas post , hand made jewellery and other crafts .

Then of course there was the coffee and cake stall which proved very popular , so thank you to everyone who donated cakes .

Keep your eyes open for future fundraising coffee mornings .

TOOWOOMBA FLOODS AUSTRALIAN SCOUTS PROVIDE LINK BETWEEN FRIENDS

We all saw TV footage of the raging floods in the town of Toowoomba, near Brisbane, Australia recently.

Well my friend Danny, with his wife Stacey and son Lachlan, live in Toowoomba. My family stayed with them there a few years ago. We were anxious to find out whether they were OK or whether their home had been washed away.

I sent e-mails and tried phoning with no result. I trawled the internet trying to find a way to find out about them and found the Toowoomba Scout website.

I was able to e-mail the Scouts and guess what – within 4 hours they had sent someone round to Danny’s

house to check on him.

They found out he and his family are fine.

Danny’s water dam had been washed away and some sheep from their family’s farm over the road were drowned. But they were OK. Danny ‘phoned me today.

He says Toowoomba is making a remarkable recovery. We are so grateful for the link across the world that Toowoomba Scouts provided – we’ve contacted them to say a big thank you.

Isn’t the world wide family of Scouting a wonderful thing.

On a Rainy 2010: Sunday Morning Another Great It was a drizzly Sunday morning for the remembrance service at St. Mary’s church in Bramshott, back in November.

However despite the rain there was a good turn out from both Scout troops as well as from Stirling Explorer Unit.

A beautiful service was given honouring British Soldiers who had died in not only World War 1 (1915-18) and World War 2 (1939 – 45), but those who had given their lives in numerous conflicts since and those who continue to do so in places like Afghanistan.

It was the turn of 1st Liphook to carry the union flag during the service. Robert Thurbon was the flag bearer and his Colour Party was Micheal and Matt.

Dom Gwilliam carried the Scout Flag and his Color Party was Chris Hains and Gareth Abbott.

Robert Ivens laid a wreath on behalf of the group during the ceremony.

A £40 Donation was given to The Brittish Leigon for the Wreath

is not only the eve of 40 25 Years in 2011 years of scouting in Liphook but is a very special year for and Willow Beaver Liphook Ashdown Collonies.

This year marks 25 years of Beavers within 1st Liphook.

The occasion will marked with a Beaver Fun day that will be held in May. Mary West helped set up and ran the first beaver colony in 1986. Currently Mark Stocker runs Ashdown Colony whilst Mark Boosey runs Willow.

Mike King, during the St. Georges day service at Churchers College, was awarded his long servie award for dedicating an amazing 50 years to Scouting. Also awarded for long service was Alan Jordan for 20 years, Caroline Stephenson for 10years, Jan Harris for 10years service.

The camps this year have been exceptional with the aviation themed cub camp, the Clown themed Beaver camp and the superb Medieval Scout Camp.

Many thanks to all the leaders involved in all the camps for year of excellent camps.

Wheatsheef Cub Pack not only lost their Akela but the much loved Uniformed leader Janet King, who has decided she would prefer, after many years of hard work, to take a less taxing roll within the group.

Dick Eyre also Passed his role as Publicity officer to become a Uniformed Cub Leader in Downlands pack.

The role of publicity officer was given to Daniel Holden.

We have had much to celebrate this past year.

Many Beavers have achieved their chief scout Bronze Awards and similarly many Cubs have achieved their Chief Scout Silver Awards, these are the highest awards that can be achieved in the

sections.

Many leaders had their achievements recognized this year also. Shiela and Nigel Woods were presented with their wood beads.

Fundraising ensured the group can continue to run and that these camps can be as great as they have been. The fundraising this year has been exceptional with LIBDA, Classic Car Day, Race Night and the Scout Christmas Post.

2011 Year Planner....

St.Georges Day This year would have been Liphook’s turn to host the St.Georges day celebrations however due to the dates of Easter and subsequently the School’s Easter holidays St.Georges Day has been cancelled. We hope however to see you at next years Event.

AGM

As last years AGM was such a success, having a campfire and BBQ we will be continuing to make this event more interesting. This year we will be holding an activity afternoon with, shooting, climbing, archery and games for the little ones. We will end the event with the formal annual group meeting.

Scout Shop Alison Jackson who had taken over the scout shop has outlined her plans to open the Scout Shop ones every other month with coffee mornings to run alongside. The exact dates have not yet been confirmed so please keep an eye out. Saturday January 29 is however a confirmed date that the shop will be open.

Exceptional Carnival Float Every year 1st Liphook go all out for Liphook Carnival and this year was no exception.

After many hours of hard work from many leaders and help-

ers the tractor and trailer was transformed into an exceptional looking Viking Longship. The boys where then dressed up as fearsome Viking warriors.

Birthday Book to be published

After a mishap with a windsurfing mast in 2007 , that forced the floats behind to stop while the mast was taken down in order to get under the overhead cable, this year the mast was made to measure at
