The Bishop Speaks

What a timely word for the times we currently are living in! The very word “uncertainty” carries with it the mystery and fear of our lives today. Covid-19, loss of jobs, homes and health, closing of schools and overburdened healthcare facilities, political unrest and the country’s divisiveness. Being a retiree, it was not that long ago that I had not thought much of the passing of the days beyond the “normal everyday”. I got up, read my daily devotionals, had breakfast and prepared for the day of walking my dog, running errands, window shopping or visiting. Being new to the city of Columbus I took so much for granted nine months ago! Now my every movement has to be planned; do I have my mask and enough hand sanitizer; will the store be too crowded; will there be enough stock on the shelves for my purchases? How complacent I had become. The Bible teaches us that the only certain thing in our lives, other than death, is the love, mercy and grace of Jesus Christ. He only is our sustainer, our ever-present rock during uncertain times. He never changes, He never leaves; His presence makes uncertain times certain. Proverbs 3:5-6 “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he will direct thy paths”. His Word stands when we falter; there is no uncertainty in Him. There is peace and calmness instead of chaos; there is a certainty that whatever takes place He’s already fixed the issue and is just waiting on me to trust and rest in His deliverance.

All through the Old Testament there are stories of the children of Israel going through “uncertain times”, periods of war, enslavement, but ultimately deliverance. A fitting scripture during these present times is 2 Chronicles 7:14 “IF my people, which are called by MY name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek MY face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and will heal their land”. This is the way from uncertainty to certainty. In Him we find protection, peace, and joy, there is no uncertainty in Him. It seems like mankind revels in making the same mistakes that come to the same conclusion. There is no certainty without God, there is no peace without God, there is no purpose without God. Trust and believe, there is no uncertainty on where this story will end, for it is certain that “He that is unjust, let him be unjust still: and he which is filthy, let him be filthy still: and he that is righteous, let him be righteous still: and he that is holy, let him be holy still. And behold I come quickly, and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be.” Rev. 22:11-12
