Anti-sexism and the rise of online misogyny

According to the National Education Union's (NEU) general secretary, Daniel Kebede, sexism is on the rise in schools because of harmful content on children's phones.

Mr Kebede called for an inquiry to "really challenge" social-media companies during the NEU’s annual conference April 2024, explaining that from his experience, boys watched "aggressive and violent pornography" and influencer content that "completely distorts their view of women".

During the pre-debate interviews, Kaspar Zeta-Skeet said that among some teenagers he taught there was an "assumption” that “women are things just to be observed".

"A large part of my role…is to try and combat those ideas and try

and provide a role model of positive masculinity that doesn't demonstrate these sort of toxic traits."

Nina Darkowa said online content meant some girls at her secondary school were concerned with their body image.

Fortunately, education is signposted as a crucial way to challenge sexist stereotypes and behaviours before ideas and incidents escalate. And we completely agree. Read more in our latest edition of FOCUS; where 1decision CEO, Hayley Sherwood, explores how to manage misogyny in primary schools (pg 7).

Special Spotlight

Did you know that 78 young people aged under 25 were murdered with a knife or sharp object during the 12 month period to March 2023?

And did you hear that knife crime can begin for children as young as 10 years old? Startling statistics reveal that in 2023 alone, over 1,000 children under the age of 18 were victims of knife crime in the UK. This alarming reality underscores the urgent need for awareness and action to safeguard our youth.

In our latest issue of FOCUS Magazine, Rachael Down sheds light on the impact of knife crime on children and school communities. Through such pieces, we as a PSHE community hope to help inspire reflection on how we can work together to address this pressing concern.

As part of our commitment to raising awareness, we've partnered with the Ben Kinsella Trust to develop an impactful assembly focusing on knife crime prevention. This

assembly, crafted with expertise and care, provides a valuable resource to engage pupils in meaningful discussions about the consequences of knife crime and the importance of making positive choices.

This initiative comes at a crucial time, as we gear up for Knife Crime Awareness Week 20th - 26th May 2024. Visit Ben Kinsella Trust website for more resources.

Additionally, access our specially designed assembly in collaboration with the Ben Kinsella Trust here

Explore the Spring Edition of FOCUS Magazine to read Rachael's 3-minute article and discover invaluable insights on tackling knife crime.

Together, let's equip our children with knowledge, empathy, and resilience to navigate the challenges they may face and build a future free from the grip of knife crime.

As we honour this day, we’re reaffirming our commitment to embracing and celebrating the rich tapestry of families and cultures around the world.

As we celebrate the International Day of Families, let us embrace the opportunity to teach our pupils about the importance of diversity within our communities. These lessons are not just academic; they are the building blocks for a more harmonious, understanding and diverse society.

Let us commit to nurturing an environment where every child feels valued and included, and where diversity is celebrated as a strength. In doing so, we lay the foundation for a future that is bright with the promise of unity and mutual respect.
