TOODYAY STUDIO

HOTEL AND OUTDOOR CINEMA

A small hotel and outdoor cinema is proposed for the town centre of Toodyay. The building is conceived with the idea of critical regionalism in mind, and is strongly connected to the local town and landscape. Mapping is used as a tool to analyse the site, with important elements, such as waterways, axes, and materiality, being included so that they can be drawn from in the design process. Each room within the hotel and is unique and symbolically connected to a different part of Toodyay’s identity. One room connects to the historic courthouse, one connects to the streetscape, another connects to the tavern next door, and another connects to a typical country house found in the area.

THE NEW TRIANGLE THE BASIN, VIC

The town centre of The Basin, known as The Triangle, features shopping areas and a park. Adjacent to it, I have proposed the New Triangle, which is a space for production, education, and contemplation. The New Triangle features many different buildings, including an education centre. The New Triangle is designed with an experimental approach. The design explores the dialectical opposition of contradicting concepts, and how new forms and ideas are generated through these oppositions. For example, the toilet block is large and small at the same time. At face value, this seems impossible, however the ambiguity of language makes it so, since different words and phrases can be interpreted in a variety of ways. The toilet block is physically small, however the large parcel of flattened land which it sits on implies that it is much larger. One may then interpret this to mean that the building was once larger in the past.

As a result of this approach, common perceptions of The Basin are challenged. Previously, a visitor would experience the town in a very ordinary way, as they would with any day trip. The new design create``s an alternative experience by generating a sense of the uncanny.

Historical v. Existing:

External materiality of the building is identical to house which existed on site previously. Warped memory of building is revived.

Real v. Fake:

Interior materiality generates familiar atmosphere, however holes penetrating floor are uncanny reminder that building is suspended.

Floating v. Grounded

From afar, building appears to be built on top of timber studs. Up close, an uncanny gap is revealed between studs and ground.

Familiar v. Uncanny:

Familiar elements such as weatherboards, roof tiles, and sash windows are utilised in unusual ways.

Close v. Far: Pathway and entry taper towards building, creating forced perspective. Generates ambiguity about closeness of building.

Real v. Fake:

Ordinary and familiar elements suggest history and authenticity. Suspension structure contradicts authenticity by creating puppet out of building.

WAVE CHAIR

The Wave Chair is a sculptural side chair consisting of various concave and convex curves. The chair’s form derives from a process driven design methodology. Various sizes of timber were cut into different shapes, mostly through the cove cutting technique on the table saw. These pieces were then stuck together as I saw fit. The chair is made from Tasmanian blackwood.

BODRUM VS THE WORLD

The Story Box is a factory and a museum that produces tiles to preserve Bodrum’s local identity against the homogenising force of hotel and real estate development. Bodrum locals help manufacture tiles with motifs, symbols, and stories specific to Bodrum. The tiles are donated for use in new buildings, thus preserving a small piece of local culture.

The building is design with visitors in mind. There is a gallery space to showcase both the finished tiles and the tile manufacturing process.

I walk into the same space that I entered prior, on the other side of the glass.

e tiles wrap around and overwhelm me with their brilliant colours.

To my le , I see stories about Bodrum. To my right, I see the people that live here.

Elements within the building are distributed within a eld, de ned by rectangular outer walls.

WALYALUP ABORIGINAL CULTURAL CENTRE

FREMANTLE, WA

The British first arrived in Fremantle in an area near Arthur Head. In those days, before most of the limestone headland was quarried away, it was much larger and stretched west towards the sea. The headland, known to the local Whadjuk people as Manjaree, was an important ceremonial and trading location.

The new cultural centre recreates the old Arthur Head before it was quarried away by European colonisers. It imagines a limestone rock that has been eroded into smaller pillars and outcrops. The spaces in between these formations become rooms through the construction of walls and roofs. These walls are made of limestone blocks, while the rock formations are made primarily of rammed earth. The recreation of the old cliff is symbolic of the time before colonisation, when the location was used by the local Whadjuk people as a trading place. Similarly, the new building acts as a trading place of indigenous knowledge and culture.

MEDIA LABORATORY

RMIT DOCKLANDS MEDIA PRECINCT

The Media Lab is a project for a film, television, gaming, and sound design centre for RMIT students in the Docklands Media Precinct. The idea for the building is to create a laboratory-like environment which gives students the freedom to experiment and collaborate. Parts of the building’s program, such as studying zones, editing suites, and start-up spaces, sit side-by-side in a single “long room”. On the peripheries of the long room are offices, a maker space, lounge spaces, and more. Dynamic opportunities and potentials are generated within the long room. The mixing of different programs enables interdisciplinary activity, and the spaces can be used by graduates and start up companies for professional projects. There are also spaces for students to relax during breaktime, and spaces for public interaction.

The design process for the Media Lab involved the procedural modification of a basic starting typology. A generic cantilever bridge and library atrium were modified using a series of procedural operations. The results of these two series of operations were then combined to form the Media Lab.

MUSEUM OF THE EVERYDAY ENVIRONMENT

The everyday world often feels banal, disenchanting, and unexceptional. Yet when viewed with an open mind, it is difficult to find anything from our everyday environment that does not have some positive attribute or redeeming quality.

My thesis explores how a museum can enhance one’s perception of the everyday world by exhibiting it in a way that encourages an open minded appreciation. Everyday artifacts and scenes, such as domestic appliances or street scenes, are framed in such a way that they can be appreciated for their history, design, personal value, functionality, aesthetic sensations, or humanity. The site is located near the Moonee Ponds Junction, which is itself an overlooked yet dynamic area.

Visitors should leave the museum with a state of mind that enables them to appreciate the richness of the everyday environment and feel a greater connection with it.

Through this project I sought to answer:

How can a building frame things from the everyday environment in such a way that emphasises their best qualities?

How can a building influence the mood of visitors to promote open-mindedness and empathy towards unappreciated things? How can the museum’s architecture affect the visitor’s experience of the exhibits?

FACADE DETAILS

Facade detail documentation of a skyscraper proposed as part of a university project. The facade is fully glazed with aluminium fins for shading. The building’s structure consists of a steel and concrete composite core and outrigger system.

TERRACE HOUSE EXTENSION DOCUMENTATION

Documentation for a project I worked on while at Studio Ester. I was responsible for the documentation and detail design of the project from the schematic design stage through to the building permit stage, with oversight from Anna Power.

The project is for the extension and renovation of small terrace house in inner Melbourne. The living area at the rear of the building has been redesigned to be more open and connected to the back yard though the addition of two new protrusions away from the building.
