Due to its complex political and cultural landscape, Taiwan has cultivated grassroots, vibrant, and rich humanities. However most Taiwanese have always had a historical tendency toward cultural inferiority. I believe my mission as a Taiwanese architect or designer is to look back at Taiwan from a global perspective and use architecture as a means to reshape Taiwan’s cultural self-identity.

Urban sprawl makes all things go efficiently, our choices are affected by the consideration of usefulness intuitively. Public buildings are usually constructed with the lowest public funds, the quality is sacrificed, and the spirituality is ignored.

This project is an attempt to go beyond simply satisfying the basic utility of Taipei’s Second Funeral Parlor, and find the appropriate ritualism and spirituality in the face of the departure of relatives and friends.

Being Towards Death

As Heidegger’s philosophy of death goes, “Death and life are two sides of one coin, death achieves life. “ Death awakens people who have lost their consciousness, and regains the ability to reconstruct reality, thus gaining freedom through death.

Spatial Planning

The exterior brick wall that faces the side of the Xinhai Tunnel closes off the view from the outside but still lets light in. After a visitor passes through the ground level of the building and enters the interior, the building and landscape visually and spiritually extend, as if revealing a new quiet world that contrasts with the city’s hustle

Illegal rooftop additions come from people at the bottom of society. Differences in the lives of the residents result in diversity in construction, bringing vigor and vitality to rigid houses and streets.

In the “beat of box”, I design from my own perspective as a user, and create a micro-architecture for a single person with a minimal 3*3*3m space parasitically attached to an original building. It is a tribute to Taiwan’s illegal constructions, and it reflects the essence of architecture.

The mechanization and capitalization of modern culture and society have gradually simplified people and buildings. Only a few designers are responsible for buildings that house hundreds of people, thereby limiting artistic freedom and diversity. Building violations in Taiwan are based on practical needs and psychological needs. Population expansion and storage requirements have resulted in actual demand for more space; meanwhile, a reaction against power and a protest against the loss of ontology creates psychological demands.

Transforming musical language into architectural language, Fugue applies differences in repetition to create the spatial richness of the space for the event happening, and give tourists and locals fresh insight into Argena’s past.

A research of the philosophy of music and space

Whether wandering among musical notes and melodies or within sequences of space, it encompasses temporal and structural characteristics. Building upon their shared transformative foundation, an attempt is made to establish a cross-disciplinary operational language.

Investigating the compositional techniques of the Baroque period, such as fugue, their significance on both a physical and spiritual level is explored, transforming them from mere architectural vocabulary of space into solutions on the level of meaning as well.

Music/Drawing Fugue

Fugue is a contrapuntal musical composition technique, structured with voices introducing a main theme fragment (subject), followed by responses (answers) in imitation, creating an effect of voices engaging in a mutual question-and-answer pursuit. In the paintings "Fugue" and "Fugue in red" which depict the transformation of fugue, three levels of fugue are summarized: first, the presentation of the theme; second, the dialogue of answers; and third, the overall synthesis of theme and answer.

Space Fugue Experiment

In the initial experiment of fugue space, the technique of musical fugue was employed as a means of architectural design.

Through the second experiment, the dimensions of the Argena structure were taken as the "subject" of the fugue, diverging into different spatial trajectories, which were then utilized as path settings for different groups within Argena - tourists and residents.

The aim is to facilitate interaction through various forms, exchanging perspectives on viewing Argena, and reinterpreting the ruins of Argena.

Agena of the past

From 1936 to 1966, Argena served as a storage and transportation site for Japanese miners, shipping minerals to Japan. From 1966 to 1987, it operated as a shipbuilding company manufacturing private yachts for the upper class. Argena's ruins have since been abandoned, becoming a forgotten relic untouched by residents.

Urban stitching

While the architectural facade has been replaced over the years due to different usage demands, the framework remains intact. In this design, a surface akin to a skin layer is installed, and Lane 116 is converted into a pedestrian zone, drawing foot traffic into the secluded triangular area of Argena.

Upon entering the pedestrian zone, the outer perimeter consists of landscaped terraces/plazas for resting, offering residents a space for leisurely strolls. By releasing the exclusive ownership of the base that was once exploited for resources, it transforms into a space that belongs to no one yet accommodates everyone.

Lightweight Structure

The design incorporates a permeable structure - a greenhouse framework - installed on the foundation of the original Argena structure. Similar to the manipulation of the aforementioned Fugue Space, it presents a rhythmic visual landscape. The greenhouse framework not only allows for sight penetration but also keeping the interior cool.

Culinary and Architectural Integration

Keelung's seaside boasts fresh seafood resources, and in this design, Keelung's geography and cultural context are integrated, designating some spaces as hubs for culinary culture. I've established a streamlined seafood industry chain within the architecture: dry/wet markets, prepared food stalls, and dining areas.

The outbreak of the pandemic and the convenience of technology have driven changes in work patterns. Demand for physical engagement between people has decreased, while the sense of isolation has increased.

This project creates serendipitous encounters between people by setting up diverse architectural pathways, rediscovering a sense of belonging through human connections.

The project applies geometrical exploration to create spatial fluidity. In the mathematical model, a type can be combined in infinite ways. A single unit can serve a single user by itself as well as a complex group through combination with other units. It forms a regular pattern in an organic shape. The unit is a pre-cast system, which can be quickly produced and combined in many ways according to different needs.

Rediscover the connection between people Unit Development

The outbreak of the pandemic and the convenience of technology have driven changes in work patterns. The home environment became the office space; everyone’s living area was divided up. People are far removed from the touch of actual space and people.

The meaning of life is to connect with people. In “Encounter Space,” a living community of creators, the mixed work and living space not only maintains private living areas but offers a lot of public space for creators to freely engage with other inhabitants to spark ideas. It’s a community suitable for social creatures, allowing people to feel real connections with other people as in the old days.

Spatial Partition

The organic form produces two spaces: the inside and the outside. The “inside” is used as a housing space, and the “outside” is used as an office space. The “inside” and “outside” spaces do not interfere with each other, and there is only one elevator and the auditorium where the two spaces meet. Unlike common approaches for subdividing buildings, here the housing and office space are separated by floors (inside and outside), so that both residents and workers can enjoy the same sunlight and view.

The lounge and the grand auditorium upstairs are both open to residents and creators. public space A-living space B-working space multifunctional space

Current situation issues

The existing command centre faces issues such as a cluttered background for speeches, insufficient space within the command centre, and handrails obstructing the sight. As for the existing auditorium, problems include outdated bulletin boards and a lack of space for student club practices.

Increase spatial flexibility

The command centre serves both as a showcase of the school's spirit and as a stage for students. The original command centre has been transformed to maintain its solemnity while increasing spatial flexibility. During use, the space in the command centre can be divided into a front stage and a backstage; used as a podium during flag-raising or stage performances, and as a practice space for student clubs during regular hours.

Transform traditional material

By applying 3D modelling, the rain cover is designed by using a traditional greenhouse structure to channel rain elegantly. Curtains are added to the command centre, providing a more elegant background for flag-raising ceremonies. The colour choice adopts the deep sea blue from the school emblem, presenting imagery of students as vast as the ocean. The railing employs galvanized steel wire to reduce the visual sense of volume. In the design of the bulletin board, a transformation of the traditional menu clip principle is applied, using the weight of a sphere to hold posters.

The overall spatial planning follows the “Sustainable” design concept conveyed by SCloud. Using four metal volumes to define spatial functions, common angle irons are transformed into building components. Combined with galvanized iron plates, a partition system is designed that allows for quick assembly, rapid disassembly, and sustainable recycling.

This forms a flexible and versatile modular system, creating four main functional spaces: TABAC bar area, storage room, workshop, dressing room, and VIP room. The spaces outside the partitions serve as a multifunctional open area for curation, photography, residence, and product display. The overall space is based on a grayscale tone of gray and silver, providing a backdrop for the diverse products of the brand.

La Maison SCLOUD adjusts the proportion relationship in the arrangement, challenges existing patterns, and presents different expressions of functionality. It defines the order and rhythm of space flow between reality and illusion, using purely local materials to attempt to reshape a contemporary avant-garde selection space.

The development of Taiwan's architectural history is divided into five periods: the U.S. Aid Period, the Chinese Retro Period, the Indigenous Modern Period, the Atypical Period, and the Modern Period. From these periods, we have extracted architectural elements and reinterpreted them using modern materials—curved pipes and components—to transform architectural imagery from different eras. Each sculpture is constructed from four specific sizes of curved pipe structures.

Elevation (A2-3)

An unknown space in the elevator

The spatial team envisions the exhibition area as an elevator cabin positioned at the centre of the exhibition. Incorporating elevator vocabulary, and dynamic canvas with patterns spined vertically in the background, creates a somatosensory illusion that visitors are staying in a rising elevator.

Display stands are made of galvanised sheets and a panel light of the same size is placed above. The elevator components-Iron Scurf Handle, Elevator cast iron guide wheel, and Gearless Traction Machine are displayed on it, showing how the elevators were made. One of the stands can move vertically by elevator motor when visitors press an elevator button, increasing the interactivity of exhibits.

Elevator industry transformation

East Elevator, rooted in the traditional industry of elevator components, focuses on elevator manufacturing. The second generation, represented by Quan Space, shifts its attention to the innovation of the elevator, trying to create more possibilities for the elevator’s design and use.

The spatial team and Quan Space create an interactive exhibition room, open the internal mechanical component and operation mode to the visitor, enable people to understand the precision and boundless creativity within the elevator industry.
