Thank you for reading my portfolio

Within this portfolio, I aim to convey my comprehension of the interconnected dynamics of 'human, architecture, and the city,' along with showcasing my critical analysis of prevalent social issues within urban settings. With the selections of four design projects as the foundation, each focus around the interplay between various generations of individuals and the urban (architecture) in the present context. These projects illuminate the challenges that, in my perspective, innovative design should tackle. While exploring the relationship of architecture and urban design, I am inclined to develop into the correlation between minority communities and architecture within diverse urban environments. In additional, my belief in architecture is that it can play a part in dealing with and adding to this complex process.

INSTRUCTOR: Scott Yuan

INDIVIDUAL WORK YEAR: 2023

The site was a factory that manufactured weapons and provided ammunition for various wars located in Hembrug area, which was hidden by dense forests since 1895. After the war, it attempted to transform to civilian production however it failed. It was idle for some time since the beginning of 2003. In order to improve the performance, radiate of the land and surrounding communities. The part of the current site is planned to be transformed into an urban multi-functional farm shared by different generations.

"Soft" Theater

A theater architecture designed based on attention to vulnerable groups on campus

LOCATION: Changsha City ,Hunan Province,China

INSTRUCTOR: Scott Yuan

INDIVIDUAL WORK

YEAR: 2022

As a theater within a university campus, the architectural space serves not only its basic functions but also plays a multifaceted role in fostering social interaction and providing public spaces on campus. During my research focusing on the campus community, I observed a growing issue of internal competition, leading to increasing psychological pressure on students. When designing a campus theater for students, I go beyond the essential functions expected of theater buildings. I aim to address these challenges from a spatial perspective, ensuring that both the exterior and interior of the building exude a 'soft' quality to alleviate the psychological pressure experienced by students.

6

The base is located in the new campus of Central South University in Yuelu District, Changsha City, Hunan Province. There are gymnasiums on the west and north sides of the base. The surrounding areas are mainly residential areas of students.

"Juan" means involution, especially referring to the energy consumption and waste caused by competition.

ANALYSISOFMASSING

Confirm the site boundary, set back the distance for the stadium, and release the front area plaza.

Determine the large and small volumes separately to generate traffic space, and generate a gathering space at the plaza.

Place the two functions of large and small theaters into different blocks. And generate independent entrances for different partitions.

Using circular ramps to connect two individual blocks and generate control points based on function and structure.

Generate membrane skin based on control points and use a grid structure, with the rest using a frame structure.

Linear and non-linear blocks are interlaced to form the final volume, and the site layout is adjusted to add greenery.

The mechanism of involution can also be seen in the education sector that focuses on exam-oriented education. Use "agricultural involution" to describe the agricultural development pattern in which "countless labor forces are concentrated in limited rice production" The practice of motherhood in urban families breaks through the tradition of taking care of children in the private sphere and shows a trend of involution. The building skin uses a PTFE membrane structure, which has good light transmittance and is lightweight.

The building structure adopts a combination of frame and grid structure to meet the needs of different spaces.

The club activity center and art therapy center on the top floor have separate entrances to avoid interference between different circulation lines.

The walkways running through different elevations become different choices for the paths of different characters in the building.

The intertwined paths create opportunities for communication.

There is a semi-private communication space in the rest area to provide help for vulnerable groups.

I heard there is an art therapy room upstairs. want to experience it and relax!!

The atrium space that runs through the fourth floor improves the lighting effect inside the space and makes the line of sight more connected.

There are two large and small theaters in the building, which are used for performances of different sizes.

Outdoor activity venues are divided into under-eaves spaces, green spaces and waterfront spaces to cope with interference from different climates.

The underground floor is equipped with parking lots and equipment rooms.

In this theater design, the main structure adopts a frame system, and the outer membrane structure adopts a grid structure to meet the needs of different spaces for scale and spatial effects.

Today I came to the theater to see Swan Lake, it was truly an audio-visual feast, and I gained a lot!

There are many people coming out from there. Are there any activities upstairs? Let's go and see together!

The walkways run through the entire building at different levels, different roles choose different paths and the intertwined paths create opportunities for communication.

03 Earth Telescope Project

Another epoch-making project after man landed on the moon

LOCATION: Manhattan Borough,New York,America

INSTRUCTOR: Jiaxin Wen

GROUP WORK

YEAR: 2022

In the future, with the integration of multi-disciplines and multi-technologies, deep earth exploration will achieve leapfrog development. Mankind has made a final push into the deepest reaches of the earth.

"Transparent Earth", a scientific research project for human exploration of the earth, is another great project with epoch-making significance after the moon landing plan. To remember this feat, a new Tower of Babel was built on top of the original site while people explored underground, its height changing with the depth of the excavation, as a monument to man's conquest of nature. The skyscraper, built both above ground and underground, not only represents another conquest of nature by human beings, but also symbolizes another technological revolution in the rapid development of deep exploration technology and energy revolution in the exploration of new energy sources in the earth's interior. The combination of the two will promote another leap in the development of human history.

We hope to set up a monument of nature in the high-density "concrete forest" of the city, and attract the attention of the whole block, the whole city and even the whole world through the rich changes of nature displayed by the building itself, so as to take people away from the high-intensity pace of life for a moment. You can enter such a museum in the busy street to touch, feel and participate in nature, so as to slow down the pace and recall the dusty sense of life and the awe of nature.

11

CONCEPT

In the sky, human spacecraft have been able to land on the Moon 380,000 kilometers away and Mars 55 million kilometers away. At the bottom of the sea, the mariana Trench, the deepest in the world, is more than 11,000 meters, where deep-sea submersives from China, the United Kingdom, the United States and Japan have achieved deep-sea exploration tests of more than 10,000 meters. However, we know too little about the planet we live on, because earth science research is more about what's on the surface, and much of it is hypothetical. To elevate it to a theoretical model, we must drill and verify it.

Deeply probe , referred to as the "telescope" deep into the earth, it will help scientists to verify material movement and the earth crust evolution rule. The United Nations designated 2008 as the "International Year of planet Earth", and proposed from a strategic height: to march into the last frontier of mankind -- underground materials and structures, calling for deeper exploration and recognition of the earth's deep.

The earthwork of underground excavation is simply divided into two parts. One part is the samples of research value, and the other part is meaningless waste soil residue, which is transported to a specific treatment plant for secondary purification to obtain raw materials that can be used for 3D printing. According to the 3D landform data obtained from the detection and scanning during underground excavation, the corresponding building components are made by 3D printing technology, and then the helicopter is installed and fixed from high in the sky, so as to achieve a natural monument of growth.

——Sustainable homes: Temporary shelters for laborers in the city

Guangzhou is one of the most populous cities in China, with 8.5 million migrant workers according to incomplete statistics. Most of them work as low-level laborers such as sanitation workers, delivery workers, taxi drivers, etc. The project aims to use the cracks in the city to build sustainable temporary spaces. The project plans to use the gap space in the city to build a sustainable temporary shelter, which will become a multi-functional urban plug-in for workers to rest, socialize, and recreate.

Construction workers in Guangzhou City are required to work long hours and perform intensive labour, resulting in a lack of adequate rest time for them. In addition, some construction sites may lack suitable rest facilities and environment.

The taxi industry is highly competitive, with high operating costs and long working hours. Some drivers may face the problem of fatigue driving caused by long hours of continuous driving, and the long working hours in the vehicles make it difficult for them to solve the problems of daily meals and rest.

Delivery workers in Guangzhou are mainly made up of a young group who work long hours every day and are physically and mentally exhausted, while being less safe on the roads. In addition, due to the need to ride constantly, the charging problem of electric vehicles is also a major difficulty.

Guangzhou has a large population, but according to the survey, there are very few convenient service points on the streets, which causes a lot of inconvenience to the public when they go out with their mobile phones and transport without electricity.

Lavatory Cell

Lounge Cell

The shelter structure is divided into cubic cells (3x3x3m). There are 10 different functional cubes. Each of them can be combined to form a different spatial form.

Primary structure made of wooden quadriple beamsand pillars of 8 cmx8 cm.

Each built-up cell is Surrounded by 8 empty cells that forms its neighbourhood.

Empty cells surrounding a built-up cell can be replaced by a garden cell. Empty cells surrounding built-up cell can be also replaced by another cell and a traffic cell needs to be added.

Additional beams are inserted to stabilize the main structure and form the basis, and put in different sized pots to grow plants.

Modular Construction

All units are in 3*3*3m square boxes, making it easy to modularly build this shelter according to the required functions.

Upper Floor

The upper floors are mainly set up as spaces for long stays, with lounges, fastfood restaurants, shared kitchens and other functions that need to be used for a long period of time, and planting units are randomly placed on each floor to make the whole structure more sustainable.

Middle Floor

The middle floor is mainly set up as a space for longer stays, with functions such as a job-seeking centre, activity rooms and a communication centre, with more open space attributes to increase the opportunities for people to communicate with each other.

Low Floor

The lower floors have functional units such as toilets, changing rooms, charging rooms, tool rooms, medical rooms and other functional units that can provide quick solutions to the needs for laborers.

——Creating a youth interactive experience community based on university commercial street

Since the establishment of Hunan University of Science and Technology in 1971, Yangzitang Street has grown alongside the emergence of the school. However, over time, this street has gradually faded from people's memories. Presently, its functions and quality no longer satisfy the demands of contemporary college students, resulting in a disorderly spatial arrangement and outdated functional configuration in the entire street. The current initiative aims to transform the street into a youthful experiential district, employing urban curation strategies to ensure the perpetual vibrancy of the area throughout the year.

Relative to the number of young people, the number of older people is smaller and comes from nearby residential areas.

Students

18-23 Years

Most of the students come from the nearby Hunan University of Science and Technology, and most students feel that the business format is too single.

Office users

24-30 Years

Young workers generally graduate from nearby universities or work in nearby technology parks or companies. This commercial street can only meet basic needs.

Domestic Household

Any Age

The proportion of households is larger than the number of elderly people, and the consumption scope in this area is generally food and beverages.

There are many educational institutions and youth apartments distributed around the base, with a large number of young people but lacking a nearby activity community. The majority of the people around the site are young people.

Satisfaction with the neighborhood

According to statistics, with this block as the center and a radius of 5 km, 74% are young people. I interviewed some of them and summarized some of their problems with this block.

74% 8% Among the people living near the center of this neighborhood, young people account for 74%

Across all age groups, only 8% said they were satisfied with the neighborhood

Most of the commercial streets are catering, and there is no space for us to communicate with each other.

The nearby community is too old and there is no room for public activities at all. I don’t know where to relax during the rest day.

The streets are narrow, and the people on the road are mixed with cars, which is extremely unsafe.

Set up a double first-floor walkway to separate people and vehicles inside the street.

Breaking the traditional tight layout of the street, establishing multiple public open nodes.

Break away from a single business format and add a variety of business formats that attract young people.

Strengthen unsafe brick-concrete structures, creat an interactive and sustainable neighborhood.
