REPLACEMENT 1. REMOVE NO. 1 ENGINE UNDER COVER 2. REMOVE NO. 2 ENGINE UNDER COVER 3. DRA IN ENGINE COOLA NT (a) L oos en the radiator drain c oc k plug and drain the c oolant. NOTICE: Do not remove the reserve tank cap, cylinder block drain cock plugs and radiator drain cock plug while the engine and radiator are still hot. Pressurized, hot engine coolant and steam may be released and cause serious burns.

HINT: Collect the coolant in a container and dispose of it according to the regulations in your area.

(b) Remove the radiator c ap s ub- as s embly from the radiator as s embly. (c ) L oos en the c ylinder bloc k drain c oc k plug.

4. A DD ENGINE COOLA NT (a) T ighten the radiator drain c oc k plug by hand. (b) T ighten the c ylinder bloc k drain c oc k plug. Torque: 13 N¡m (130 kgf ¡cm, 9f t ¡lbf ) (c ) Slowly fill the radiator with T O Y O T A Super L ong L ife C oolant (SL L C ). Standard C apac ity: 7 .1 liters (7 .5 U S qts , 6 .2 lmp. qts ) HINT: T O Y O T A vehic les are filled with T O Y O T A SL L C at the fac tory. I n order to avoid damage to the engine c ooling s ys tem and other tec hnic al problems , only us e T O Y O T A SL L C or s imilar high quality ethylene glyc ol bas ed non- s ilic ate, non- amine, non- nitrite, non- borate c oolant with long- life hybrid organic ac id tec hnology (c oolant with long- life hybrid organic ac id tec hnology is a c ombination of low phos phates and organic ac ids ). C ontac t your T O Y O T A dealer for further details . NOTICE: Never use water as a substitute for engine coolant.

(d) Slowly pour c oolant into the radiator res ervoir tank until it reac hes the full line.

(e) Squeeze the N o. 1 and N o. 2 radiator hos es s everal times by hand, and then c hec k the level of the c oolant. I f the c oolant level is low, add c oolant. (f) Bleed air from the c ooling s ys tem. (1 ) Warm up the engine until the thermos tat opens . While the thermos tat is open, c irc ulate the c oolant for s everal minutes . HINT: The thermostat open timing can be confirmed by squeezing the No. 2 radiator hose by hand, and checking when the engine coolant starts to flow inside the hose.

(2 ) M aintain the engine s peed at 2 5 0 0 to 3 0 0 0 rpm. (3 ) Squeeze the inlet and N o. 1 and N o. 2 radiator hos es s everal times by hand to bleed air. CA UTION:


When squeezing the radiator hoses:

Wear protec tive gloves . Be c areful as the radiator hos es are hot. Keep your hands away from the c ooling fans . NOTICE: M ake s ure that the radiator res ervoir s till has s ome c oolant in it. I f the c oolant temperature gauge indic ates an exc es s ive temperature, turn off the engine and let it c ool. I f there is not enough c oolant, the engine may overheat or be s erious ly damaged. I f the radiator res ervoir does not have enough c oolant, perform the following: 1 ) s top the engine, 2 ) wait until the c oolant has c ooled down, and 3 ) add c oolant until the res ervoir is filled to the full line. (g) Stop the engine and wait until the engine c oolant c ools down. (h) A dd engine c oolant to the full line on the radiator res ervoir.

ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION 1. INSPECT COOLING FA N ECU (a) P ut the vehic le in the following c onditions : (1 ) T urn the ignition s witc h off. (2 ) T he c oolant temperature is les s than 9 5 °C (2 0 3 °F). (3 ) T he battery voltage is between 9 and 1 4 V . (4 ) T he A /C s witc h is off. (b) C lamp the 4 0 0 A probe of an ammeter over the M + wire of eac h c ooling fan motor. (c ) T urn the ignition s witc h to O N and wait for approximately 1 0 s ec onds . C hec k that the fans s top. (d) Start the engine. C hec k that the fans are s topped with the engine idling. HINT: M ake s ure that the engine c oolant temperature is les s than 9 5 °C (2 0 3 °F). M ake s ure that the A /C s witc h is off. (e) C hec k that the fans operate when the A /C s witc h is turned on (M A X C O O L and the magnetic c lutc h is operating). Standard C urrent: ITEM
