Hello and welcome to the 56th edition of our Barn Burnin’ Bull Sale! As we sit down to write this on a cold mid-December day, we find ourselves reflecting on the year behind us and looking ahead to the one coming. Around here, our days are filled with anything and everything to do with bulls. They occupy most of our time, thoughts, and energy—and truth be told, the bull business is something we genuinely enjoy.

We’re fortunate to work in an industry as noble and grounded as agriculture.

Even more so, we’re lucky to serve ranches owned and operated by some of the best people in it. Our business model isn’t complicated, and it doesn’t need to be. We’re old-fashioned in our mission to serve our customers as well as possible, and that approach has served us well for more than half a century.

Our mother cows reflect the same straightforward approach. Their job is to work for us, and they do it well. They calve out on their own, breed back quickly, behave, wean heavy calves, graze through winter—whether that’s corn, swaths, or pasture—and return in the spring ready to do it all again. Even the very small percentage that need help at calving have still never seen the inside of a barn, only the shelter of a three-sided maternity pen.

They lick snow for water, maintain their body condition, and thrive under real-world conditions. No exceptions. Geneticists and professors will always try to put a number on the inherent ability of a beef cow to perform the basic functions that make ranchers profitable, but those of us who live it every day know exactly how valuable that natural ability is.

Demand for beef worldwide is sitting at highs we haven’t seen since the 1980s. COVID, for all its challenges, reminded a lot of people of what ranchers have long known: beef is the ultimate protein and, pound for pound, one of the best values in the grocery store. Combine that with historically tight cattle supply, and you have the strongest driver behind today’s markets—no matter which politician wants to argue the price is “too high.” Markets may rattle when they talk, but once folks have a moment to think on it, they correct themselves every time.

Here at Lloydminster, we were extremely dry. Thankfully, our other locations were more fortunate, and it really highlighted how appreciative we are to be spread out a little. Grass at Edgerton and Paynton was abundant, and winter feed supplies were ample.

By and large, cow country across Canada and the U.S. saw a good year, and for that, we’re grateful.

Please consider this your personal invitation to join us at the ranch North of Lloydminster, Alberta/Saskatchewan on sale weekend. Friday night we have a steak dinner and bulls on display all day. Saturday will see beef on a bun at 11:00 AM, with the sale kicking off at 12:00 Noon MST. As always, tours of the cattle ahead of time are welcome and encouraged. Sale morning can get a bit congested in the pens, but we’re available anytime to answer questions, visit cattle, or talk through the offering.

Hill 70 Quantock breeding Guarantee

At Hill 70 Quantock, we stand behind our bulls with a straightforward promise: you will have a bull to breed your cows— no matter what happens.

• Fertility Guarantee: Every bull is guaranteed to pass a semen test conducted by a licensed veterinarian using current and accepted industry standards once they reach 14 months of age.

• Soundness Warranty: For the best protection against injuries we strongly recommend our extended warranty coverage at the time of sale. For issues arising in purchasers' care which are treatable, the responsibility falls with the purchaser to make appropriate treatments/remedies to manage said issue. For example - foot rot, sole abscesses, sand cracks, eye infections, etc.

Should any Hill 70 Quantock bull fail to perform as a satisfactory breeder during his first season, we will: 1. Replace the bull with one of equal value and performance level, if available.

2. If a replacement isn’t possible, we’ll adjust the bull’s value or provide a credit toward the purchase of another Hill 70 Quantock bull.

Important Notes: • Warranty coverage is limited to the replacement of the bull or equivalent adjustments. It does not cover loss of calf crops or potential calves that could have been sired.

• If you encounter any issues, contact us immediately—don’t wait six months. We maintain a battery of loaner bulls ready to step in whenever necessary.

• In cases where credit is issued, the following formula will be applied: Purchase price less salvage value (where applicable) less $2000 per year of service = Credit Invest in Peace of Mind Extended Warranty Coverage is a sound investment that’s easy to arrange at the time of purchase or by delivery.

• Basic Warranty 1.75% • Covers bulls from sale day (February 7, 2026) through April 30, 2026 OR delivery, whichever comes first.

• Must be put on ALL bulls left at Hill 70 Quantock that are on the bull development program.

• Can be converted to Extended Warranty at any time up to April 30, 2026 OR delivery.

• Protects against loss of use from either injury or death • Extended Warranty 8% • Covers bulls from sale day (February 7, 2026) until September 30, 2026 • Covers loss of use due to injury AS WELL AS death • We will replace the bull with a qualified breeding bull of equal value OR replace the bull and adjust the value agreed upon OR loan a bull to get through the existing breeding season OR take the bull back and issue a credit for the next year’s bull sale from when the bull in question was purchased.

• Claims that can not be physically assessed by Hill 70 Quantock will need a certificate from a licensed veterinarian to validate claim, as well as to provide identification in the event of death.

• Credit issued on a bull per bull basis • Credit will only be applied to balance owing on bull(s). Credit will not be applied toward future Basic/Extended Warranty or bull development.

• In the event of salvage sale where bulls have been shown neglect relating to their health, body condition or physical appearance a minimum salvage value of $4,000.00 will be applied to the bull(s) in question.

Delivery Made Easy After the sale, we’ll quickly arrange to deliver your cattle safely and as close to your ranch as possible. Deliveries are made to central locations that are convenient for buyers. Wherever you’re located, we’ll get pretty close!

To keep things efficient, please be ready to meet us or receive your purchases when we call ahead with your delivery date.

Our delivery routes run in both February and April for all bulls.

• Western Provinces: Free delivery, as always.

• Eastern and Maritime Provinces: We’ll cost-share delivery for cattle headed farther afield. For buyers in Ontario and East, we cover delivery up to the Manitoba/Ontario border.

• United States: Cost shared delivery representing only fuel.

We’ll take care of all the logistics, so you don’t have to worry about a thing. If you’d prefer to haul your bulls yourself, you can take advantage of our $100/bull “Haul Yer-Own” discount.

Hill 70 Quantock Ranch “Cowboy Friendly” Programs GOOD NEIGHBOR PROGRAM • Bring a neighbor who hasn't purchased bulls in 2024 or 2025, and if both make a bull purchase of at least $8,000, you will each receive a $250 rebate. BREEDING PROGRAM • Quality assurance: All animals in this sale are bred, born, and raised at Hill 70 Quantock or through longstanding cooperator herds.

60/40 FINANCE PROGRAM • Buyers can pay 60% on sale day and the remaining 40% by July 1, 2026, interest-free, with a legal lending agreement.

BULL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM • Bulls are cared for on-site post-sale, developing modestly with any and all daily care and maintenance covered

EPDs are “Expected Progeny Differences.” They are a tool in selection for traits when the accuracies are above 50%. EPDs compare all cattle across the whole breed. EPDs incorporate the individual animal with its average ancestry performance. EPDs do not compare across breeds and are totally breed specific. EPDs indicate a probable variance above or below breed average for that trait for a given bulls progeny. Use them as a guide in the direction you want your herd to go.

Birth Weight (BW) – Predicts the average weight of a bull’s calves at birth compared to the breed average (measured in pounds).

Calving Ease (CE) – Predicts the percentage of unassisted births a sire’s calves are expected to have, especially when bred to heifers. Higher values indicate easier calving.

Weaning Weight (WW) – Predicts the average weaning weight of a bull’s calves (at 205 days) compared to the breed average EPD. Yearling Weight (YW) – Predicts the average weight of a bull’s calves at one year of age (365 days) compared to the breed average EPD. Milk – Predicts the additional pounds of calf weaning weight attributed to the dam’s milk production.Milk is best evaluated when individual environments are considered.

Accuracy – Accuracies are a measure of the EPD’s reliability when analyzed across a suitable sample size. Accuracies <.7(70%) are considered reliable. Bulls must have GE EPDs to reach this accuracy or have a large number of progeny measured. EPDs can not be compared across breeds.

Understanding Scurs Some polled cattle have scurs, which are incompletely developed horns that are usually attached to the skin and can be scab-like or can resemble horns. Having scurs is why the phenotypic condition is sometimes hard to identify. Scurs are also genetic but different from the polled gene, and in bulls the gene for scurs is dominant.

So, if a bull has scurs, he can be either heterozygous (Ss) or homozygous (SS), and if a female has scurs, she must be homozygous (SS). Cows that are Ss will be smooth polled. Scurs can only be seen in polled cattle because horned cattle hide the scurred gene.

Here are some mating examples: 1) If you have a scurred cow (Pp for the horned/ polled gene and SS for the scurred gene) and she is mated to a PP smooth polled bull (ss), all of the heterozygous polled bull calves should be scurred. More importantly, the bull calves produced from this mating that are not scurred should be PP. 2) All of the females produced in this example would be smooth polled but would carry one dominant gene for the scurred trait and all calves of both sexes would either be smooth polled or scurred/polled because they would all receive a dominant gene for polled from the bull.

3) If a heterozygous scurred female is bred to a heterozygous scurred bull, all homozygous polled calves will not have scurs.
