Lea Maalouf Grade 9 ATt IGCSE Weeks 4-5 Design Brief: Game Cover

The graphic design project for weeks four to five is to design a cover for aWii game. The title of the game is Fasf Track.lt is about travelling the world and learning and experiencing new cultures. It is an educational, adventure game that broadens people's perceptions of the world. The target customers are teenagers fages 10-16J who haven't travelled a lot and want to learn more about the world and its many cultures. The front cover should capture the essence of the game ftravel/fast-paced/adventure). The title should look like it is in motion (to portray that the game is fastJ. The back cover should show pictures of some of the places you will get to travel to with your virtual character. There is no specific character, people may create their own characters, choose their clothing, and accessories as they wish. Things that should be considered or mentioned on the back cover are that game is fast-paced. The game is about travelling the world. Characters will have the to complete tasks ffor example, cooking a traditional meal, learning a few words in a certain language, performing a traditional dance etc.) and unlock clues in order to travel to the next country. The character will receive money for the tasks they complete and depending on how hard the tasks are and how well they complete them. The main goal of the game is to budget your money and time wisely in order to travel around the world as fast as possible. With more money, you can choose faster transportation [e.g. planes, as opposed to trainsJ, and which foods your character eats (e.g. expensive, healthy foods, as opposed to cheap foods on the streetJ. Feed your character nutritious meals to avoid getting sick. High scores of other gamers will be displayed at the end of the game so you can compare how fast you travelled the world against other gamers.

Design Process Idea: Fast Track

-travelling around the world -doing tasks and unlocking codes to get from one country to the next -receive money for tasks -choose your own transportation -genre : education/adventure -"How fast can you travel?" LlResearch -l researched wii game covers -l looked through my pictures of places around the world ffor the back cover) -l had to narrow the pictures down to the best ones, and I eliminated ones that were the same (for example, I had two jungle pictures so I only used one) -l searched for a wii game cover template to use for my game Hr' :i

2)Design

-l thought about my design and experimented -at first my game cover looked like this:

-l didn't like itvery much because it looked too much like a photo album than a game cover. -l played around with the pictures to see what would look better

but none of them seemed to look like

-l did more research and realized that most game covers have one image in the front that captures the main essence of the game, and a few pictures in the back that demonstrate the features of the game -l moved the images to the back cover and resized them to make them smaller so they would fit -l kept the picture of crossing the bridge in the jungle and made it around 50%o background and had some other pictures in front transparency for the g.ct .: tuErhoq ,ile.-(g! rq.

-now I had to think of an image to put in front -l finally came up with the idea of having a man skydiving out of a plane -l searched for the best quality pictures I could find using creative commons -these were the images I found

-l experimented with the pictures to see which ones would be the best combination fl used the magic wand tool to select certain parts of the picture and put three images together*the sky, the plane, and the skydiver-to make one picture)

-l liked this one the best because the sky fit perfectly with the pictures. The sun sheds a circle of light behind the man highlighting him. Also, since the picture of the skydiver is a bit darh it makes sense that the sun was behind him. Since the light was behind him rather than in front of him, you see his silhouette and only a little bit of details. -now, I did the text on the front cover I used font: 'marker felt', because it seemed adventurous, flowing, and not uptight (like Times New Roman). It looked like it would fit for a jungle setting too, and the shapes of the letters reminded me of bamboo sticks. - I wanted to make Fast Track look like it was in motion fto portray the word 'fast'), so I tried doing Filter>Blur>Motion Blur, but that didn't look like the words were in

motion, it just made them look blurry. Instead, I experimented more and tried Filter>Stylize>Wind. This worked much better; because there were streaks behind the letters to show which direction they are moving in. -the next thing I wanted to do with the text was add shadows behind the letters to same covers do thisJ T**g,Ll,:J..Tg-ll.,p^"gt,gy"!-To.:_!siycegglt","""*L.

-l tried various techniques to make the letters pop out more. For example, I checked drop shadow, inner shadow, outer glow, and inner glow. Then I saw that I could make the text have texture, to I chose a texture for my title.

-l still wasn't satisfied with the background, so I did more research. I found out that it is common for games to have a big picture on top and smaller images on the bottom of the frame, so I did this as well. Also, I changed the opacity of the jungle image from 50% to 100% so that the image would show. -l then wrote the description and chose the color white for the font. I thought that white would work best because it would lighten up the picture. It would also blend in better with the Wii cover template than blach or any other color.
