Term 2, 2015

YOUTH LEADING THE WAY Local youth were the driving force behind two recent skate park events which attracted over 300 people to the Golden Plains community. The 2nd annual Barwon South West Skate Park Competition held in Bannockburn, and the inaugural Skate Park Competition held in Smythesdale brought young skaters, BMX and scooter riders from all over the State. The events provided significant developmental opportunities for local young people with a whole day workshop, delivered by the YMCA Action Sports Team, designed to provide these young people with the skills to manage and plan skate park events in their local area. Skills gained included event and risk management, budgeting, film/photography, judging, emceeing, and promotion/marketing. Following the success of these skate park events, other local young people have put their hand up to assist with the planning of National Youth Week activities, including the 3rd annual Golden Youth Awards. The awards ceremony will be held on Friday 17 April in Bannockburn where young people will be recognised for their positive contribution to the Golden Plains community. For more event details or information on how to get involved in your local community contact the Golden Plains Youth Activities Officer, Sarah Dalton (o3) 5220 7177 or email sdalton@gplains.vic.gov.au
