CLASS' NOTE “Ako’y Sining: Pagmamahal sa Kultura at Sarili” is a digital zine that highlights Filipino pop culture and tradition through the appropriation of various art and media elements. The exhibit features the class of 12-Curie recreating their favorite Filipino movie posters, scenes, OPM album covers, and artwork made by Filipinos. It is an initiative that strives to foster appreciation for Filipino music, art, and cinema, while also allowing students to showcase the significance of Filipino media and culture in their own lives.

“Ako’y sining” translates to “I am art” in English.

Through recreating art that holds significant meaning in our lives and highlighting ourselves as the centerpiece, we embrace and accept ourselves as unique and beautiful, with the power to influence the world around us.

Like the most powerful art piece, most lyrical song, or lifechanging film, we each hold an important place in the universe and the potential to change realities through our own words and actions. Self-love is at the heart of this project, and is something that we all struggle internally with at times. With this project, we aimed to conquer the very things that hold us back from expressing ourselves—insecurities, selfconsciousness, uncertainties, flaws—and transform ourselves into art.

We hope that reading this zine and revisiting your favorite classic movies, artworks, and music evokes feelings of nostalgia and familiarity, and by viewing our photo exhibit, reading our personal anecdotes, and flipping through interactive games and fun features, we help you find your appreciation and love for your Filipino culture again.

FEATURES

Tell Me When To Stop The Car is a song written and produced by Chairman Mouse, an indie rock band from Quezon City, Philippines.

The song was released last 2015 and the band uploaded a music video a year later (2016). My favorite lines include "Stopped driving at the place where it ended, A beat down cafe where my heart descended, Stopped driving when the tears came falling, All i can do at this point is remembering"

PERSONAL PROFILE Tell me when to stop the car is actually a song about a break-up, but I've never really experienced one, so I can't really relate to it, meaning-wise, but it is one of the few songs that helped me develop my love for indie rock music. I'm actually cousins with one of the band members, and every time I went to their house, I would hear them playing the song, so I basically grew up listening to their music. I even went to one of their gigs to support them and listen to my favorite songs live. The scene I recreated did not really have a symbolic meaning because you really have to watch the whole music video to understand the context. However, I chose this scene because it is just right after the climax of the story, and that was when I felt very confused and surprised because it was really unexpected, which is why I think this is the most memorable scene in the music video.

FEATURES This is an appropriation of the cover album of CIRCUS by Eraserheads which was released: October 1994.

This album talks about the everyday lives of teenagers and how living in the moment creates friendships and finding one's identity in the process. Our favorite line is "Minsan ay hindi ko na alam ang nangyayari, Kahit na anong gawin, Lahat ng bagay ay merong hangganan" from Minsan because everything comes to an end. The same goes with every chapter of our lives. This lyric serves as a reminder to enjoy life as it is.

PERSONAL PROFILE Eraserheads was introduced to us through various platforms such as the radio, TV, and movies. Most importantly, our parents and siblings are fans of the band. Their songs still have an impact and leave a meaningful message to the people of today. The creative input behind our recreation would probably be about simplicity since we want to emphasize on the album more. As we are nearing the end of another chapter in our lives, Eraserheads will always hold the feelings behind the struggles and experiences of coming of age.

Now, looking back to it, the song explains that love is a feeling that we must cherish forever despite the pain it might inflict on us, because, at the end of the day, as long as this is shared with our lovers, family, and friends, it is still the seed of the happiness we experience in our lives. The recreation of the album cover I created is very simplistic and took fair efforts with editing.

Fake It Flowers.

FEATURES

Beatrice Laus, also known as beabadoobee, released her debut studio album called “Fake It Flowers” in October 2020. Compared to her lo-fi bedroom pop style, this album is quite different as it showcases more of an alternative and indie rock sound. My favorite song in the album is “Together,” and my favorite line in the song is “Don’t wanna hurt you like I did ‘cause I’m not waiting for you but I don’t want to hurt you.” Because the lyrics in her songs show many of her struggles, I, alongside many other people who listen to her music, find myself relating to the emotions being conveyed through her music.

The album, as described by beabadoobee herself in an interview, “is pretty much [her] whole life in one album.”

You can tell by the lyrics alone that they show the many challenges Beatrice has been through in her life, with each song having its own story behind it and emotions coursing through the music. I decided to recreate the album cover of this particular album because I’m quite a fan of beabadoobee myself, and I’ve always liked her music as the lyrics of her songs hit a little close to home for me. The album cover is simple and minimalistic, and it was easy to recreate the vintage vibes of the art with some minimal editing.

Baut ismo FEATURES

“Oras'' by Munimuni --a five-piece indie folk band from Metro Manila, displays great craftsmanship with deep, meaningful content. It was first seen in 2018 as a single, together with “Kalachuchi”, and “Tahanan”, and was fully released in 2019 from their debut album “Kulayan Natin”. Within our music industry, it’s so easy to get lost and think that the words to the songs are beautiful just because they are filled with hugot lines; Munimuni, however, distincts itself with their prodigious talent not usually seen and heard even in this talent-rich country. Their lyrics are close to poetry, with lines like “Wala sa iyong kamay / Ang klima ng buhay / Akyat-baba ng alon / Sa pagdaloy ng panahon,” which serves as a gentle reminder to all of us that we are not in full control of our lives, and that we’re simply doing what we’re taught to do. What makes Munimuni special and intriguing is from the way they compose their music -their signature flute floats over their thought provoking lyrics, makes a fragile, serene vibe acting as if it is a lullaby that, ironically, keeps you up at night.

I was first introduced to Munimuni when my avid-indie-fans friends invited me to come with them to their gig at Jess and Pats in September of 2019. I wasn’t really fond of indie music not until bands like Lola Amour, and Munimuni came into the picture. Discovering Munimuni is like being introduced to a whole new genre, as what they like to call it “The Makata Pop”.

You can tell how talented and dedicated they are to making music from the way they perform, and how smoothly they tackle pressing issues of today, such as mental health, through their passion. To show my appreciation for their music, I decided to recreate their debut album cover named “Bautismo” from the “Bautismo” series made by Martin Honasan that talks about finding oneself, dignity, and choosing to carry on despite hardships in life. This relates to me in a way that I still am finding my purpose in life, following paths I want to take facing the challenges that come along the way. Unlike the original artwork that made use of damaged-based modes of production from modern day 'tektons’, I used simpler materials like tissues, poster paints, and a mask, to try replicate the texture, and the colors present in the artwork.

REGINA JARAMILLO

Beabadoobee’s inspiration for her music comes from her own life experiences, particularly as a teenager who struggled with finding her place in the world. She was 18 years old when “Patched Up'' was released, and there is a song called “Eighteen” on the EP as well. Since the original cover depicts a cartoon-style background, I used digital editing to create the same effect in my recreation. Bea was born in the Philippines but moved to England when she was still young and has lived there most of her life. She has previously spoken about how she wants to deepen her connection with her Filipino culture as she grew up in a different country and was never able to fully experience it, which is why I was initially drawn to her as an artist as I had the same experience growing up and felt I could relate to her struggles with her identity. I found “Patched Up” soon after it was released and immediately felt a connection to the music, but now that I’m turning 18 in a few months I feel like I can relate it more to my current state in life, particularly with the fear and sadness of growing up that she sings about. The music in “Patched Up”, as well as Beabadoobee’s other works, has helped me accept my own mixed feelings towards the coming-of-age phase I’m in, and I consider it to be an impactful work for not only teenagers, but anyone going through internal struggles and difficult changes in their life.

N I G H T S NIGHTS FEATURES

Nights was released on January 10, 2020

by LY. It talks about unrequited love and how difficult it is to actually let go of the romantic feelings you have for someone.

The song seems to depict leftover feelings after the breakup of a seemingly happy couple. My favorite line is “But the truth is you don’t love me too”.

PERSONAL PROFILE

I found this song when I was idly scrolling through Twitter and I clicked an unfamiliar song link. I immediately fell in love because I really connected with how it makes yearning sound like something that I could slow dance to. In my recreation, I borrowed most of the props I used from my friends and family. For example, I borrowed the shoes from my mom, which were a little too small for me. I wanted to recreate this album cover specifically, knowing that I did not have most of the materials for it, because I felt that borrowing items would help me feel less afraid to ask for help next time.

FEATURES P.S. I Love You is a song by Sharon Cuneta, written and composed by Gordon Jenkins and Johnny Mercer. The song was originally made for a movie that Sharon Cuneta participated in as a lead actress. But this song, later on, became one of the tracks of Sharon’s album that was released in 1981, which was also called P.S. I Love You. The album had a total of 7 songs under Vicor Records. The meaning behind the song is simply about unconditional love, how one person is ready to risk or fight any challenges that would come their way just to prove one’s love to the other, that no matter what happens she will continue to love. My favorite line of the song would have to be when she said “Kahit pa ano ang sa akin ay gawin, Dahil mahal ka'y handa kong tiisin”, because right of the bat, it is very evident how much she deeply loves and cares for this person.

Faith Luz

The first time I heard the song was when I watched the movie that Sharon Cuneta starred in. It was a very typical Filipino romance movie, but the movie still left a strong impression on me. One of the reasons for this was the theme song of the movie, it was very catchy, cheesy but still romantic. I could still definitely imagine how this song would touch many hearts of fellow Filipinos, maybe because in a way it is something that we all have felt at a certain point. Recreating the Album cover was pretty easy for the original setting of the cover was a teenager’s room filled with books and a lot of other personal stuff. What made my recreation a little bit different is the modern twist to the room, for example instead of books in the background there were lots of gadgets surrounding me. To summarize, the thought and the theme of the original cover was still there, but the feel is slightly different because we are now living in another generation.

Justine Major PERSONAL PROFILE My favorite song from this band would be “Leaves” which was released in 2017.

I found out about this song in 2018 when my music teacher played it for us in class. This was around the same time I found out who Ben&Ben was. There is one line in particular that struck me, and I continue to remember when I am not feeling my best. This line is “Leaves will soon grow from the bareness of trees and all will be alright in time.” This line implies that no matter what problem occurs, eventually there is a light at the end of the tunnel.

Side A is an OPM band from the 1980’s which specializes in pop and R&B. They are mostly recognized and known for creating their hitsingle called forevermore. Rodel and Naldy Gonzalez, alongside Joey Benin, Kelly Badon, Mar Dizon and Pido Lalimarmo started and founded Side A in the year 1985. The group gained their popularity in 1989 with their debut album with their hit single “Eva Marie” and started winning local awards in 1990 with their 3rd album which earned two “Awit Awards”.

PERSONAL PROFILE

The song Tell me is about a person that was recently broken up and is desperate to know why their relationship ended. I got to know this band from my parents, when they were young they collected the bands albums and went to their concerts. Eventually after they got married, they shared the music they loved to us ever since I was a toddler. Growing up, I would always hear the songs at least once a month and it would always be played in our monthly road trips. Since I've grown up listening to their music, it is slightly upsetting that they are not recognized, which is why I wanted to add it to the zine.

“Malayo Na Tayo” is a singles released on the 2nd of November in the year 2017 by Silent Sanctuary. “Malayo Na Tayo” is an alternative or indie song that revolves around someone who is struggling to move on. The song sums up that heartbreaks from a friend, family, or a significant other is the most difficult thing to move on from and all about the realization that life isn’t full of fun, games, and rainbows. It also reminds everyone that moving on from one something or someone is hard no matter what the situation is but despite this, the person or object you’re longing for will always be remembered by your mind. My favorite lyrics is “Nandyan ka't nandito ako Maalis ka ba sa isip ko Kahit na malayo na tayo Malayo na tayo” because people will say that we are better off without that person, and that we can find someone else new. It does sound easy at first, but as the process goes on you’ll realize that it is not.

Silent Sanctuary was introduced to me through various platforms such as the radio, TV, and more. The band was also introduced to me by my family and cousins as they are a fan of the band as well. Since then I also started to become an avid fan of them and even know the lyrics to all of their songs. Silent Sanctuary has this unique, sweet, soothing, and melodic sound that I just fell in love with. I do think that their songs will always give you the feels regardless if you’re struggling, hopeless, sad and more. I do relate to their work “Malayo Na Tayo” as I believed in the promises of unending love, patience, and grit but fell short. Moreover, the creative output behind the recreation of the song cover would probably be about simplicity since I want the people to focus more on the lyrics behind it. Furthermore, the song is for those who are struggling to move on and a constant reminder that it's just a relapse and a process that we all should go through life and that’s okay.

I first heard this song being played at an event in school and later on being sung repeatedly by my friend. To make my recreation, I used my own clothes, my mom's accessories, and computer editing. Apart from the work’s comedic nature and its reputation

“jejemon”,

the

has

also

always

resonated

with

me

through

its

message of learning not to dwell on painful experiences in the field of romance. I’ve gone

through

heartbreak

once,

and

I've

found

liberty

in

laughing

it

off

and

remembering my worth. There are plenty of fish in the sea and plenty of good times to be had, so don't fret! Hayaan mo sila na maghabol sa'yo.

FEATURES Jason Dhakal

has been progressively bringing his music to another level. He has recently collaborated with Iloilo-based producer dot.jaime for his debut EP entitled "Night In" which was released last June 15 of 2018. This track is a timeline of songs that tell a story of how he once lost himself by loving someone else – an ode to his lover. Dhakal’s songs are most commonly known for its isolated vocals and laidback beats that wonderfully accompany his powerful lyrics that will surely pull your heartstrings. All his works are beautifully written and one of my most favorite lines is from his song "Do I, Part 2", where he mentioned, "Mold my heart a different shape to fit you, held my heart so tight until it bleeds you."

PERSONAL PROFILE

I first discovered his music in a café last 2019 where I instantly fell in love with the first line and immediately asked Siri for the artist; since then, I have been an avid fan of his work. My work of appropriation for Jason Dhakal's Album "Night In" was surprisingly attainable with the use of a few editing softwares such as Lightroom and Photoshop. On the other hand, shooting the photo was quite challenging because I wanted to capture the perfect lighting so I shot during golden hour, which for me, is the most difficult time to shoot given that this period of daytime only lasts for around 5 to 10 minutes; luckily, I was able to get a photo that I liked. Listening to Dhakal's music is similar to reading books, which is something that I'm really fond of. His music often does the talking for him – casually telling stories people are too afraid to say out loud. I relate to him in a way that his songs ooze with honesty and unfiltered emotions. For moments at a time, he makes it seem like life isn't a nightmare after all.

FEATURES Two girls with fruit baskets is an oil painting created by Anita Magsaysay-Ho in 1942. It symbolizes the women she would see whenever she went to vacation in Zambales as a child. She was surrounded by many women who were always hard at work. Personally, our favorite thing about the art are the colors used, since they were mainly warm toned, making them more appealing and comforting to us.

VIELLA QUEROL PERSONAL PROFILE

Anita Magsaysay-Ho always spent her summers in Zambales, her native province, which inspired the subject of hardworking women in her art. She always saw these women busy with their work in the province, and that these memories of the rural life stayed with her throughout her lifetime. Our recreation was made with items we already had at home, such as our phone cameras and other props.

We mainly relied on digital editing and mobile editing apps to complete our input. We relate to the artist, Anita Magsaysay-Ho, because we were also exposed to a similar provincial life at a young age.

KAWATAKI

The piece “Mango Pickers� by Fernando Amorsolo was completed in 1937, the year when women's rights arose, and multiple occasions for Filipinas were held, such as being given the right to vote.

The landscape exhibits the traditional clothing, occupations, customs, and most especially the true beauty of a Filipina with a morena and bright skin, rounded face, and lively eyes. Within the painting, Filipino's characteristics can be seen through the characters as they appear hard-working yet satisfied with whatever they are doing. My favorite part about the painting is that there are light and dark colors, and the artist changed the depth of the pigments based on the lighting and shadows. I also liked how the sunlight was towards the girl sitting down, which somehow gives her a spotlight, and there were no dull spaces throughout the whole painting.

PERSONAL PROFILE

Fernando Amorsolo is known for his landscape paintings, which showcases traditional Filipino cultures, attires, affairs, and even historical events. Since he was recognized as the first National Artist in the country, he was introduced in schools and has multiple known paintings displayed in museums. Despite being called "Mango Pickers," I used a variety of fruits such as papaya, bananas, oranges, and apples as these were the only fruits available in our household. I also wore my Filipiniana, a traditional Filipino attire in the color yellow, which was a bit similar to what the girl sitting down was wearing in the painting. Just like Fernando Amorsolo's paintings, I wish to express my appreciation toward Filipino traditions by introducing them to other people through different mediums of art like songs, poems, paintings, and more. In the present time, social media can also be a platform to exhibit what a true Filipino means and familiarize people more about our country since social media is used daily, which allows them to be exposed in many ways.

NMAT GIRLS FEATURES With the help of TropicFrills Film Production and Wild Sound Studios, Kip Oebanda was successfully able to create the film “Bar Boys.” This comedic and dramatic movie was released on August 16, 2017, during the Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino of that year.

PERSONAL PROFILE Kip Oebanda, the director of “Bar Boys,” was inspired when his friend mentioned that law school can be described as the “ultimate horror film.” Consequently, the film showcasing the journey of aspiring lawyers was made. For our appropriation, we decided to change the concept into “NMAT Girls,” as everyone in our group aspires to become a doctor and the process to achieve such a feat is also deemed difficult. To emphasize this idea, we utilized different materials in our poster, such as white coats, face masks, and stethoscopes. Similar to the movie “Bar Boys,” our recreation called “NMAT Girls” shows a group of friends following their respective paths in order to achieve their goals while facing their own struggles.

The original movie poster, and the movie itself, starred four (4) main actors, namely Carlo Aquino, Kean Cipriano, Rocco Nacino, and Enzo Pineda, who were successfully able to show the journey of aspiring lawyers and the struggles their characters had to endure. This film also had memorable lines that struck the hearts of the audience, such as “The purpose of life is to be defeated by greater and greater things,” and “Kung hindi ka natatalo, hindi ka na gumagalaw.”

Overall, this inspiring film touched base on various topics, such as real-life social and political issues, the process of becoming a lawyer, and the importance of friendship.

Way Back Home FEATURES

"Way Back Home" is a film which was released on August 17, 2011, and was directed

by Jerry Lopez Sineneng. The movie is essentially about two sisters, Jessica and Joana, who possess completely different dreams, priorities, and beliefs – who due to unfortunate events have been separated since childhood. However, fate led them to one another when they reunited at a swimming competition but instead of being delighted at the thought of finally being together again, a conflict started to arise. Luckily, in the end, Jessica was able to reflect on her actions and to ask for Joana’s forgiveness to additionally show her that time doesn’t heal all wounds if these wounds are never acknowledged in the first place. Our favorite line from Way Back Home is “Akala mo ba gan’on kadali iyon? Ang iwan ang nakasanayan kong pamilya? Ang isantabi si Anna para maging si Joana at anong kapalit n’on Ate? Lahat ng pananakit at pang iinsulto mo sa akin? Ate sabihin mo! Ano iyong kailangan kong gawin para mapatawad mo na ako? Anong kailangan kong gawin para matanggap mo na ako?” which was said by Joana.

It is known that Filipino filmmakers are usually fond of creating movies which focus on the topic of families, since Filipinos themselves are known to be very family-oriented, specifically by showing and resolving the conflicts that arise between them; like with how "Way Back Home" in particular shows the rivalry between siblings to get the attention of their parents and to be able to prove themselves worthy of their love. We found out about this work through social media platforms and by watching television because as we all know, Kathryn Bernardo, Julia Montes, and the other cast members of the film are very well-known actors and actresses in the Philippines Film Industry – all of which served as our motivation and inspiration in choosing to recreate this poster in particular. Speaking of recreation, behind this idea, we thought of adding more details in the poster by inserting symbols or pictures that subtly imply to the viewers what message the film was trying to relay to its audience, the very message that we both are very touched by; such as when we put a sunset-lit field as the background to imply that even if there's a sign that darkness is nearing (signifying conflict), in the end, you’ll still realize that the end of the day brings forth a new and bright light for the next day (signifying that there is always a silver lining to all our hardships). We, furthermore, added a border of yellow roses because yellow roses symbolize forgiveness, which in our opinion is the main theme of the movie “Way Back Home”. Lastly, we relate to this movie because as teenagers, we also face different challenges as we grow older, and we have different goals and priorities that need to be addressed. This movie showed us how love and acceptance can heal all wounds and taught us to forgive those who have hurt and scarred us, but only if we, ourselves, truly want that to happen.

FEATURES Kara Mia is a television drama fantasy that premiered on GMA Network on the 18th of February 2019, directed by Dominic Zapata.

The story of such a popular series revolves around two sisters named Kara and Mia; who coped with being trapped in one body with different faces and opposite personalities, starred by Barbie Forteza and Mika Dela Cruz respectively. The series was popularly known for its comedic visual effects as it was considered a viral internet meme. Although it was mainly known for comedy, it still managed to convey the lesson regarding the value of family until the end of one’s time despite all the arguments that one has gone through.

PERSONAL PROFILE We, Marian and Noreen, have been best friends since Kara Mia became an internet meme. Memes are our source of entertainment on the internet which is why we chose such an iconic concept from the social media community back in early 2019. The portrait shown is a recreation of the show’s official poster in relation to our friendship and ourselves in general. We both have different dream universities therefore it is given that we would not spend as much time then due to the distance between the colleges. Additionally, we believe that our bond is inseparable the way Kara and Mia literally are.

by Chito S. Roño, released in 2006. Sukob is a classic horror film about a Filipino superstition regarding marriage.

The wedding curse (Sukob) is caused when you have a wedding the same year a close relative of yours died.

Violating this rule may curse your marriage, can cause misfortune and death that will plague your life, and you and your loved ones are haunted by a ghostly flower girl.

My favorite from this movie is “Bakit ganyan tunog ng kampana? Parang sa patay.”

PERSONAL PROFILE This movie is the reason why I became a fan of horror, scary, and gore concepts. My cousins and I decided to watch this movie when we were young, and I was the only one who actually finished the movie without getting scared. I did feel the chills but most of them, I was amazed by how this concept can give people a scare. For this work, I only used a ring light to achieve the sidelight look, a veil(belo), a camera, and an editing app.

It is centered on Fely Malabano, an elderly woman in her 70’s, who is portrayed as a cranky grouch to almost everyone around her. When an incident happens that leads to the decision of moving Fely into a nursing home, she finds herself walking around town dejectedly until she stumbles upon a mysterious photo studio that traps her in the body of her 20-year-old self.

I remember watching the Korean version of this film with my friends and I immediately thought of showing the movie to my grandparents as well, since they could probably relate to majority of the movie, but then I remembered how they have trouble in reading subtitles along with watching the actual movie so when the Filipino adaptation came out, I made sure to schedule a time where I could watch it with them.

Even if the movie was comedic, the moral of the story was what kept me watching. It showed how neglected or forgotten the elderly in our society can be and through the film, I was able to take a glimpse of what most old people go through as they age. My favorite line would be “Sa edad natin, hindi na tayo makakatiyak kung aabot pa tayo ng bukas” because it just emphasizes how much we overestimate the amount of time we have with our loved ones. It really made me realize how we can’t take whatever we have right now for granted because no one is sure of what tomorrow has in store for us.

The film revolves around two people, Joy Fabregas (Kathryn Bernardo), an overseas filipino worker working to provide for her family who are in the Philippines, and Ethan Del Rosario (Alden Richards), a bartender, as they attempt to reconcile their personal careers and love for each other namely in Hong Kong. My favorite line from the movie is “Tulad ng mga tao, may mga dumadaan lang, meron din ng matagalan na babaguhin ka habangbuhay.”

I came to know this movie through my mom, seeing as she’s a fan of Alden Richards, and so she invited me to watch the movie with her.

As the movie was playing, I fell in love with its story. Moving on, the creative input behind my recreation of the movie poster is that instead of being surrounded by buildings like the original, I am instead surrounded by houses since we are quarantined. I wanted to make the recreation simple, since I also wanted it to represent myself in a way. Although there is no love story involved in my life, I can relate to this movie because of how the main lead was torn between choosing her family or choosing herself. As such, this film made me realize that choosing yourself is the most fulfilling decision you can do.

As I was doing research for a film review, I came across with the movie poster of “Gusto kite will all my Hypothalamus”. Out of curiosity I watched it afterwards and unexpectedly I enjoyed it until the very end. The creative inputs behind my recreation is the shaded circle behind behind the girl. The shaded circle is incorporated to a target dot likely to how the 4 men in the movie fell in love to a single woman where she all got them “bullseyed”. Hence, I seem to relate to this film by how the 4 men expressed their love despite knowing that they have more than one competitor because as I reminisced what I’ve realised after watching the movie; love is not about competing, it’s about expressing and that woke my senses. Relatively, my favorite line from the film is “‘yung one month na’yon parang buong buhay ko na, parang buong buhay na kitang kilala” where it emphasised how devoted he was to Aileen in short period of time.

I came across this film while looking for movies to watch with my mother on the Netflix app. I’ve heard good reviews about the movie prior to watching it and as someone who is a fan of melodramatic films like Anak or Sana Dati, we decided to watch it. This simple yet emotional movie hit close to home as someone who has recently lost a beloved grandmother, especially since Happy and Lola Olive’s relationship in the movie is reminiscent of that of my dog, Zoe, and late grandmother, Mama Lola’s. They grew fond of each other the same way Happy and Lola Olive did. In my recreation of the film’s promotional poster, I was holding Zoe in my arms for that reason.

She’s Dating the Gangster is a Filipino romantic comedy movie released in 2014. This film, starring Kathryn Bernardo and Daniel Padilla, was directed by Cathy Garcia-Molina. In addition, it was based on a best-selling book by Bianca Bernardino on Wattpad, an app to publish and read books online. The film revolves around Kenji Delos Reyes, a heartthrob of the main characters’ school who is known as the most notorious gangster who wanted to get back with his former girlfriend, Abigail Tizon. Alongside him is Athena Dizon, a girl who pretended to be his girlfriend to make Abigail jealous, thus making them spend a lot of quality time together and causing them to fall in love with one another. My favorite lines in the movie include “Ikamamatay ko ng maaga kung parati kitang kasama.

Ayaw na kitang kasama! Hindi ba pwedeng ganun nalang kadali yun?!”, “Gusto ko nang itigil ‘to kasi nagiging totoo na,” and “Yung takot ‘yung papatay sa akin hindi pagmamahal.”

I first knew about “She’s Dating the Gangster” when I watched the premiere show with my family, eventually making me invested and in love with its story. This is because I am a fan of the love team called “KathNiel” and because the scenes made me both smile and cry with their unique storyline. Furthermore, I had chills while watching the film since I felt as if I was in the movie itself. No matter how many times I watch it, this will always be my favorite movie. My scene’s recreation materials consist of old clothes and old props such as a clear book and the bag. I relate to this movie since I believe that loving someone entails being strong when situations get difficult.
